More OTA notes, quotes

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, May 20th, 2009 at 1:46 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Additonal notes and quotes from interviews gathered following the Raiders organized team activity Wednesday:

– Here was how Tom Cable described JaMarcus Russell’s struggles:

“Just being accurate and understanding where to throw the football and when,” Cable said.

The good news? Cable likes his footwork.

Cable stressed that it was a learning “OTA” heavy in situational play, and that the objective was to have the players comfortbale with the system changes in July so they’d be ready to compete.

– Here’s how Cable responded to reports of Burgess being traded:

“I do expect to go in with him here. But we get inquiries all the time about players and this football team. That one was kind of a surprise. There was some talk during the draft obviously but we get, people inquire about players on this team all the time. So we listen to everything.”

– Burgess is left end Trevor Scott is a right end, but if Burgess is moved Scott could end up a starter since Jay Richardson flopped sides last year.

Scott is keeping the Burgess issue at arm’s length.

“As far as Derrick goes, he’s a great inspiration, he’s a great leader when he’s on the field,” Scott said. “I haven’t really been paying attention to what’s going on,” Burgess said. “I heard a bunch of hearsay but that’s all it is right now. It’s just speculation. Only Derrick really knows what’s going on. I try to stay away from that and let him figure things out.”

Scott, who played last season at under 250 pounds, said he is nearing 260.

“I came back about 258 now,” Scott said. “My strength’s through the roof. I feel great, I feel explosive out there. A lot of the run game, though, as coach Board’s been teaching us, is all about technique and stuff. I just need to keep my hands in and just fight pressure with pressure.”

– Jeff Garcia shrugged off inquries regarding his desire to start a few days after hinting in a Los Angeles radio interview he would be ready to be a starter if called upon.

“I don’t really know or think that there’s a competition there,” Garcia said. “That is something that has already been determined. I’m just here to show that I’m very capable, if needed, to lead the position and to help the position get better and get stronger and to get more confident. That means helping JaMarcus become a better player himself and as much as he expects out of himself, that means me trying to help him expect more and to push him and to be able to show, through my experience on the field, what has been successful for me and how I’ve been able to make it work.

“And I think that’s the main thing as far as just helping the position to get better. He’s got a great attitude. He’s working hard and I just want to help him just continue that path.”

– Garcia’s father Bob, wearing a baseball camp with his son’s initials on it, was a practice observer.

– Cable said the club hasn’t given any thought to trying Michael Huff at cornerback.

– Safety Tyvon Branch, lost to shoulder surgery early in his rookie season, said he is completely healed and looking forward to putting on the pads in July.

Together with rookie Mike Mitchell, if all goes according to play, the Raiders will pair two rising star safeties with a taste for contact.

“People are going to expect us to lay the wood,” Branch said. “When I get my chance, I will.”

Branch said he counts on being part of the solution to shoring up the run defense, and believes coordinator John Marshall’s attention to detail will help in that regard.

“We’re going to be a lot more disciplined in what we do,” Branch said. “that’s one thing he harps on is being in the right spot at the right times. He’s a stickler on that stuff. He counts mental errors every day after practice.”

– Marcel Reece, who made the biggest offensive play by catching a pass in the seam from Garcia, later caught a swing pass and threw an elbow into the face mask of cornerback Justin Miller.

– The OTA format is not conducive to gathering interview material. Locker rooms are closed and players can be approached coming off the practice field. Once they get in the locker room, they’re off limits, and the whole availability period lasts about 10 minutes until Cable addressed the media. By the time he’s done, it’s all over.

    LMN,

I see you are getting a new tenant – Fredericia Shipyard – at Lindø. Sounds good for your regional economy…
    ______________________________________________________

yeah the move is less than 20 miles, the Fredericia docks suck, and Lindø is the one of the most modern shipyards in Europa, so its a smart move for all parts, the lease will o for 2 years!

Nice to read some articles that aren’t all negative or trying to make mountains out of molehills. I’m tired of all the negatives I hear. Sounds to me that Cable has a good grip on things and we finnallly have a coach who is working with Al instead of against him all the time. I know a lot of people don’t like Al but I’m a big fan and I believe we have had too many coaches trying to be anti-Al in order to prove they are in charge. Cable seems to be much more secure in himself to not do that

nice to have an all growed-up man as HC in charge.

Is Mike Mitchell really banging out his studies on Asian Philosophy right now when he is looking at making millions of dollars soon?

Although, I’m sure he has is choice of “talent” at school right now.

  10. Dakota Says:

    Jeez Vegas,

Those pictures of Russell are awful. What a fat fuk. He obviously has no regard for his physical conditioning and based on his performance thus far he has probably put little time into working on his game this offseason.

Very sad. Let’s hope he gets his act together and puts up big numbers in 2009 based on his talent alone.

But, if he continues with that type of effort he will be out of the NFL before he is 30 years old.

  11. M Lonetree Says:

    ExLa,

  12. Norco Bob Says:

You guys need not worry about Russell,..Garcia will start every game,…Russell is a fat slob that cant hit a wide open receiver with no pass rush in his face,..think he could complete a pass with Merriman in his grill?…lol,..Russell as I have always said will be the biggest draft bust in history.

Isn’t that the basic job description of a NFL QB?

  15. RaiderRockstar Says:

    – Here was how Tom Cable described JaMarcus Russell’s struggles:

these things aren’t important at the quarterback position, right?

LOL. ottocrat just read my mind!

  17. M Lonetree Says:

man, I sure hope that some of you are svelte and athletically gifted ’cause otherwise there might be some hypocrisy going down here.
personally I could not care less about any of the things that some of you rag on JRuss about. What does he do between the lines on game day. Don’t give a flying rat about issues in May.

  18. Dakota Says:

I don’t want to jump the gun and start calling Russell a bust since he is going on what, his 4th diff o-coordinator (passing game coordinator, whatever dipschit Al wants to call it) which may be the problem right now.

But he is obviously teetering on the fence and his career could go either way right now…fuk. If he busts we are dead in the water for a loooooong time.

  19. vegas raider Says:

    Dakota,

Dude looks trashed, with like an 6 oz glass of some rum and coke thing. So either his fat azz drank like 25 of those things, or can’t handle his booze too well.

Like I said a week ago, it might be better for him to crash and burn so-to-speak, with the hopes he gets “it” after that. I don’t care if he is partying all iced out, I just don’t want to see my #1 pick QB with a huge gut at 24 years old.

  24. ottocrat Says:

Yeah, that Cable quote definitely stood out like a sore thumb. Jeez, today was the 1st time I saw those King of Bling pics. He really looks fat. And, based on pic #2, it looks like he gained some of that weight during munchy time. Also, Cable will be a guest on Chronicle Live today.

    ********************************

That thing had to cost six figures easy. Pretty unique I thought, not many players get a necklace of his own jersey.

  26. RaiderRockstar Says:

Russell still has 10 days in May plus June, July and August to get the kinks out and learn the Hackett/Tollner offense …

a lot can change in 3 months. Jeff Garcia, the tireless veteran worker and mentor even said “He’s got a great attitude and he’s working hard”

  27. Dakota Says:

    Vegas,

Exactly, I could not care less if he was out partying, drinking, all decked out like that…as long as he got up for work the next day, did some Tae Bo to shrink that fat fuking gut, and then went outside and threw a few dozen passes to stay sharp.

He is young, hopefully someday he will “get it”.

  28. M Lonetree Says:

    Dakota,

what is the incentive for anyone who is guaranteed a lifetime supply of cash to ever be in shape for any reason unless they want to?

  29. SnB Defense Says:

You guys are like a bunch of teenagers…worrying about what another man is wearing…how he looks in clothes and all….

  30. Dakota Says:

    M,

Incentive? How about self-respect? Respect for the franchise that paid him to play a game? Respect for his teammates who are depending on him to perform? Respect for the coaches that will get fired if he blows it?

I can’t imagine letting everyone down like that, but it has happened time and time again in the NFL, so it won’t surprise me if it happens to Russell.

  31. RaiderRockstar Says:

he has great footwork! maybe he should become a boxer?

I think it was 25 years, no?

  33. SnB Defense Says:

    Rockstar,

All 3 QBs looked bad in the practice today. At least according to that reporter that’s was on the scene. I just hope Tollner/Hackett/Cable are implementing a sound offensive strategy.

Again, why didn’t Cable take the extra mandatory minicamp?

  34. Moose Says:

People expect things to be a jump, quick, fast, in a hurry,” Russell said. “They don’t really know football, because there’s a process, and now we’re on one of those building stages of the process and I’m happy to be a part of that because once things are getting going, then everyobody wants to be praising, patting you on the back…..

  35. vegas raider Says:

    SnB,

Dude is chubby and at best in the same shape as he was last year (but probably worse) and throwing passes at the feet of his WR’s with not much in they way of defense. Obviously he didn’t work on his craft much since last season ended. Now granted he will improve throughout training camp, but asking for a little off-season dedication isn’t asking for much is it?

  36. M Lonetree Says:

    Dakota,

has JRuss let anyone down yet? From what JLH and Chaz had to say he’s doing fine and does have their respect. Becoming more of a leader as time passes.
A gut is what people are worried about?

  37. 909RaiderLifer Says:

    Vegas…

They could make a knock off, out of rhinestones and sell them to the female members of the Nation.

  38. ottocrat Says:

Easy way to get money out of JRuss. Approach him with a can’t-miss investment opportunity. Picture this JaMarcus. We’re going to create a hybrid of Burger King and The Shane Company. Just make the check out to….

  39. inonewordraider Says:

Wow, those JRuss pictures were obviously taken since he’s been a Raider, what a shame. Party all you want as long as you get the job done but being that fat there’s no way he’s gettin the job done. We gotta get Vick cuz Garcia is not the long term solution and Garcia can’t throw the deep ball which would make DHB a worthless #1 pick. Very disheartening

  42. RaiderRockstar Says:

Al Davis should have hired Dan Marino to be JaMarcus Russell’s mentor and QB coach. kill 2 birds with one stone

I think the photos were from last weekend and the fight right? Unless he goes out in his designer backpack and un-light cigar all the time.

  46. Dakota Says:

    M,

Like his teammates are going to come out and state the truth, lol. Come on man. And he is letting them down by not giving them 100% effort. No one that looks pregnant at 24 years old is giving 100% effort, let alone 50% effort. But we’ll see if his talent can carry his gut through until he develops a better work ethic.

  49. RaiderRockstar Says:

the same reason he benched Huff and not Fargas?

the same reason he tried to make Janikowski the ball carrier on a fake FG run?

the same reason he doesn’t make guys practice plays until they execute them properly?

the same reason he doesn’t stop a play with there is a false start or offsides penalty?

    you tell me S&B !!!

  50. Dakota Says:

I’d still rather have a fat Russell than sign that POS Michael Vick.

Oh, and people that look pregnant at age 24 generally look like this at age 30, lol:

  51. M Lonetree Says:

    Dakota,

calling his Raider teammates liars, that is not very thoughtful of you.

  52. inonewordraider Says:

I haven’t paid any attention to the weight, bad work ethic, lazy comments made about Jamarcus till I’ve seen his fat ass in the photos

  53. Dakota Says:

You really are reaching M. Just look at the pictures…do your eyes deceive you? Does that look like someone giving it their all? Or even half their all?

If it is then you have very low expectations.

  54. RaiderRockstar Says:

maybe Russell and Sands were the reason Lane Kiffin had the whole team eating veggie burgers and drinking soy milk last year?

  55. vegas raider Says:

I guess Jamarcus is going to be the Livan Hernandez of NFL QB’s. So fat and out of shape during the offseason he is awful at the beginning of camp (spring training), gets in a little better shape once the season starts and by the middle of the year in the ideal shape you would like him to be in from day 1.

Livo had all the talent in the world, had his moments when he was younger but ultimately is still fat and unprepared to live up to his talents.

  56. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Russell isn’t fat … he’s big boned!

as we like to say about girls. he has a good personality :)

  57. RaiderRockstar Says:

Russell spent the offseason working out with former Raider Chester McGlockton at Fatburger

  58. SnB Defense Says:

Perhaps Jerry or the media should ask Tom Cable or JaMarcus himself about the team weight and conditioning program. If the team is fine with the conditioning of this team then you all should be too. No one here is a sports nutritionist or a physical trainer or have a degree in exercise science…so all this teenage gossip of ogling a photograph and commenting on weight is just like a teenager saying “did you see her in that dress” type stuff.

    Gimmie a break

  59. Dakota Says:

Someone please tell me there has been a franchise QB that looked pregnant at age 24? Give me some hope!

My first thought was Elway…but even when he won the SB in his late 30s he was in better shape than Russell is right now:

    http://i2.cdn.turner.com/si/2008/magazine/specials/sportsman/2008/10/31/wahl.elway/john-elway.jpg

    Marino? Nope, not at 24.

    Help me out guys.

  60. ottocrat Says:

  65. vegas raider Says:

In all fairness, Big Ben isn’t in the best shape either, a little soft in the middle. That’s who I would compare Russell’s talents to, rocket-arm but accuracy issues, mobile but not a scrambler, huge guy.

  66. Dakota Says:

There has got to be a fat fuk QB that has succeeded in the NFL, come on guys, I need something to hang my hat on here, help me out.

  67. vegas raider Says:

  68. Dakota Says:

    Thank you Vegas!!!…Ben Roethlesfatburger…okay, I can sleep at night for a while…

…I’d sleep better if Russell had his defense though…

  69. SnB Defense Says:

    Dakota,

Players have to be in shape and they have to pass a conditioning test. They can be in breach of contract if they are not in condition for camp.

When I hear that Russell has flunked the conditioning test…then I’ll join in on the chorus of boos emanating from this blog.

  70. ottocrat Says:

I don’t know. I think JRuss would beat Big Ben in the Nathan’s hot dog eating challenge hands down. Kobiashi may give him a run for his money though.

  71. Raider O Says:

  74. 909RaiderLifer Says:

Well, I am an expert on beer bellys. Since I have been working on one longer than Russell has been alive.

The kid has a beer belly, cheese burger belly. Call it what you want, but he as a boiler.

  75. inonewordraider Says:

They say the Raider Jersey on Jamarcus necklace is actually Medium adult male

  76. SnB Defense Says:

    Dakota,

The bottom line is a lot of people wanted Brady Quinn. They are upset that Russell went ahead of Quinn. It doesn’t matter what Russell does for many of you on this board. So be it. It matter that’s resolved on the field during regular season games. Not in celebrity scoop pictures from some stupid web site. And like any other player, Russell will have to prove his worth there.

  77. La Milicia Negra Says:

    Raider O…

do you remember our conversation about a SB in europe?

where you said how i would feel if a final was in the US???

  78. Raider O Says:

    M,

What’s up man? Did you ever read Law of Attraction?

  79. Dakota Says:

Lol, come on SnB, you don’t really believe that do you? You really think that even if Russell was 325 lbs that the Raiders would admit a mistake and announce that Russell was in breach of contract due to his weight? haaaaahahahaha yeah right.

You just go on ignoring your eyes and believing that the Raiders will keep us all informed of their true state of mind about Russell’s weight, lol.

But at this point it is just a major red flag IMO, nothing more, he can still pull his head out of his ass and win us some games. Not a bust yet (although there is a bust growing in his shirt), just more likely bust material if he doesn’t get his act together.

  80. SnB Defense Says:

And this is the reason a lot of teams don’t allow media access to practices and OTAs unless forced to by the league. Because people overreact postively or negatively based on a 7 on 7 drill in practice.

    The Lions went 4-0 in the 2008 pre-season :/

  81. Raider O Says:

Sonny Jurgensen, had a mighty boiler on him.

  88. Dakota Says:

By the way SnB, I never wanted Quinn in Oakland, I wanted Russell. This isn’t about who we wanted to draft, its about Russell being the best hope we have of pulling out of this nose-dive, but obviously lacking the drive to keep himself in the NFL beyond the age of 30.

  89. SnB Defense Says:

    Dakota,

Russell will be judged on wins and losses. Again, if he flunks the conditioning test in July…then I’ll start listening to all this b.s going around right now

  90. Raider O Says:

    LMN,

lol, I thought it was going to be in the US.

But you have to agree, soccer is different. It’s an international sport comaperd to a national sport like the NFL!

  91. ottocrat Says:

Everybody’s worried about whether Super Mario or Barnes is going to be at LT. What they don’t realize is, JRuss is putting on the pounds so he can block for himself. Yet another football innovation brought to you by Al Davis

  92. vegas raider Says:

AI is supposed to make me feel better?? AI just blew off practice, if he wanted to he could have schooled those guys in practice all-day. Jamarcus is throwing swing passes at guys feet, when he is trying to do well. Not a good comparision.

    SnB,

I know, and we went like 4-1 in the preseason in the Shell/Walsh year. I know it is practice but dude has to be a leader to set the standard of sharp-crisp practices that will translate onto Sundays. Foot-level passes and INT’s to end practice may not be “red-flags” but they are at least “yellow”.

  104. SnB Defense Says:

    Vegas Raider,

Everyone is making declarative statements on the 2009 campaign based on a couple of practice sessions. We don’t see the other sessions…the QB school…drills done away from cameras or prying eyes…

Its like basing the 2008 Raiders season on the Denver game in Mile High. Its just a snippet and not the full picture.

This team is also implementing a new offense and maybe there are some concepts in there that are different. Maybe the route running was bad on one play…maybe the QBs are still trying to adapt to new concepts that they are not used too. Who knows. But all 3 QBs looked poor today. If they are looking this bad in August…then its time to start screaming and yelling

As for Russell’s weight. I haven’t heard anyone saying he looks out of shape for mini camp and OTAs.

Garcia is a noted bad practice guy, and yes all 3 struggled. Maybe this is all being over-blown, but we live in a what have you done for me lately world. NFC W = Portugal
    NFC N = Turkey
    NFC S = France

  152. ottocrat Says:

    OTAs in review
After mulling it over lunch and commute, the one thing that stood out about today’s media-access Organized Team Activity continues to be the play of the quarterbacks.

    SFGate.com

    Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
We know the Raiders can run the ball and we know they can complete screen passes. We also know they have a great pass defense and, because of the no-contact rule, can’t possibly tell if the run defense is improved until the games are played.

That puts all eyes on quarterback JaMarcus Russell, and to a lesser extent, Jeff Garcia, to see how the renewed vertical passing game is coming along. The Raiders are using OTAs to improve in that area, so it bears watching closely as the biggest unknown this offseason.

    So about Russell …

Russell was 9 of 12 in drills where the defense was not on the field. He was 6 of 14 in 11-on-11 drills with one interception. He was 1 for 4 in 7-on-7 drills with one interception, though that one was on the fullback for letting it bounce off his hands.

Two other passes were dropped by cornerbacks.

Garcia was not noticeably better, and Bruce Gradkowski was significantly worse, save his red-zone touchdown pass to Louis Murphy. Andrew Walter continues to skip all voluntary functions.

Raiders coach Tom Cable defended Russell’s ongoing accuracy problems — kind of. He’s willing to cut Russell some slack because there are new plays in the passing game. But Cable only stretched so far to explain the obvious misfires.

Asked what Russell is struggling with, Cable said, “Just being accurate and understanding where to throw the football and when.”

“We’re looking to see him learn the new stuff because there’s a tremendous amount of new stuff because there’s more down-the-field action. So just getting him more settled that way.”

Russell did not complete a pass beyond 10 yards until the final drill of practice, when he hit 2 of 3 to tight ends over the middle. In between, though, he overthrew Johnnie Lee Higgins by several feet as Stanford Routt swooped in for the pick.

Russell also hit Justin Fargas in the shoelaces on his first throw against the defense, a 4-yard screen for an incompletion. His nicest throw was a fade route that 5-foot-11 receiver Samie Parker couldn’t quite get in the end zone’s corner, but the touch was the best seen in practice yet. Darrius Heyward-Bey brings that one down at 6-2.

Cable said they will keep trying this until they get it right. They may be a run-first offense, but the vertical game is back, even if it takes all offseason to perfect it.

“I wanted to put together a passing game that I was comfortable with,” Cable said. “That was something more 10, 20 to 30 yards down the field and I think you’re seeing that impact big plays every day as we go throwing the ball down the field in much greater numbers.”

    Other quick hits …

** The good news on Russell: there was only one fumbled snap, and it belonged to Garcia.

Cable said Russell’s footwork is getting better.

“I think he’s making some progress that way,” Cable said. “I like his work inside the pocket. He seems to be a little cleaner and quicker than he was before.”

** It looks like former starting strongside linebacker Ricky Brown has been bumped inside as he returns from offseason groin surgery.

Brown is playing middle linebacker behind Kirk Morrison. If they plan to move Morrison back outside where he started as an NFL rookie, they must be waiting until training camp to try.

Jon Alston has added 20 pounds to a lifetime-high 235 as he plays with the first-team defense on the strongside. He had an interception and blitz-sack Wednesday.

** Second-year defensive end Greyson Gunheim started at left end with Derrick Burgess absent (voluntary) and Jay Richardson sidelined by a minor knee strain.

Gunheim got up the middle for a coverage sack of Russell. Defensive tackle Ryan Boschetti also deflected a Russell pass.

** Defensive tackle Tommy Kelly continues to impress against the run, knocking down Justin Fargas at the line of scrimmage on the first team-drill play (FYI, Kelly, contact is against the rules here).

** One more Russell note: when he flat-out missed tight end Darrell Strong in the flats, he smacked his hands and cussed out loud. I can’t tell you another time he was that vocal about a bad play in practice. For those wanting a more fiery quarterback, there you go.

** Rookie tight end Brandon Myers beat strong safety Tyvon Branch over the middle for a big gain. Good for Myers, bad for Branch as he tries to learn NFL coverage.

Say what you want about Michael Huff, but he usually did a pretty good job covering tight ends.

** Speaking of Huff, Cable shot down our latest attempt to suggest (via interview questions) he get a chance to play cornerback since safety hasn’t worked out.

“No, not yet,” Cable said. “I think we need, to again, let him continue to develop at that free safety spot, because as you’ve seen, he’s got a ton of range, made a couple of big plays yesterday coming from center field. I think it’s better off for us to leave where it’s at right now.”
** Louis Murphy Sr. came to practice to watch Louis Murphy Jr., the fourth-round wide receiver. He talked about his son’s extensive track history, the 4.25-second 40 he once ran at Florida and how he led the national-champion Gators in receiving.

Just then, Murphy went to his knees on the near sideline to pull in a comebacker right in front of Dad.

“Way to go down for it, Murphy,” Dad said as he clapped. When asked his thoughts of local housing costs, the smile went away. It came back when asked about our weather.

** The injury list includes defensive tackle Gerard Warren (pectoral), defensive end Jay Richardson (knee strain), tight end Zach Miller (hernia), left guard Robert Gallery (calf), offensive lineman Paul McQuistan (knee), wide receiver Arman Shields (knee), wide receiver Javon Walker (knee), fullback Oren O’Neal (knee) and center Samson Satele (shoulder).

Cable expects players to start getting healthy after the team takes next week off.

** No-shows for the voluntary workouts included cornerbacks Nnamdi Asomugha and Chris Johnson; punter Shane Lechler; kicker Sebastian Janikowski; defensive end Derrick Burgess; and quarterback Andrew Walter.

Ken Stabler is a drunken stoner.

Joe Namath doesn’t care about football, only partying with women.

Jim Plunkett (when he came to Raiders) is too old and fat.

    Rich Gannon is a non-competent back-up, not a starter.

Kerry Collins is a drunk and not mobile enough for NFL.

Joe Montana will never make it – too skinny.

DO I HAVE TO GO ON? I CAN! ALL DAY! Nobody’s quarterback is PERFECT enough.

Let’s quit fretting, give Jamarcus a chance to learn the new system, and quit picking apart how he looks and every mistake he makes EVEN BEFORE PRE-SEASON, FOR GOODNESS SAKES!!!!

    ^^^^^
Oh yeah and let me add more to the list….

They also said Elway was a drunk….

Eli didn’t have the work ethic and drive as Peyton did and was a spoiled brat. He won a Super Bowl…

Big Ben- said he parties, drinks too much and is fat….he has won two Super Bowls…

McNabb- couldnt be a pocket passer….he was too fat as a pro….been to two NFC championships

Peyton Manning- too skinny and reputation for choking in the big games…won a super bowl

  177. 24 Says:

Jamarcus Russell – Hated on by many simply for being an Oakland Raider and we have to live with that. Thats the reputation Al Davis worked so hard to build.

  178. KoolKell Says:

Scrutiny comes with the #1 pick, especially a QB.

  179. Norco Bob Says:

I sure would like Russell better if he was the Charger qb,..then we would finally beat them.

  180. 24 Says:

I’m reading the David White Twitter play by play of the OTA’s and he mentions Ted Tollner coaching the WR’s out loud. This is the 2nd mention of Tollner coaching the WR’s and I wonder if Lal isn’t doing a good job or since Tollner won’t be calling plays as the Offensive Coordinator, if hes doing alot of assisting with different parts of the offense or if hes only assisting Lal in this area. Either way, this is a good thing because we have more experience being used in that area.

  181. KoolKell Says:

JaMarcus Russell is hated on because he’s black, and dresses like a stereotype, easy.

  182. 24 Says:

I think we’ll beat the Chargers with Russell as the Raiders QB…I think.

  183. Norco Bob Says:

Hard to imagine we havent beat sd since Gannon was qb,..unreal.

  184. Norco Bob Says:

Ya right 24,..last time he played them he was so scared, sucked, faked an injury to get the heck outta there,..Russell hopefully cut in Napa.

  185. KoolKell Says:

Excuse me, “dresses like a clown”

  186. Norco Bob Says:

I hope Garcia starts the next two years and I see him teaching Gradkowski to be a great qb,…keep Walter for 3rd stringer and cut Russell,..by the way if Russell was cut he would celebrate,..hes already paid and doesnt even like football, only likes the lifestyle.

  187. 24 Says:

    David White on Twitter…

next play; jamarcus misses way wide right in flats screen. yells “s” word. wow. some emotion.

    (Hahaha

    Yay! Emotion.)

  188. 24 Says:

Norco Bob – Damn. I forgot about that. Man it hurts.

  189. Norco Bob Says:

Werll I guess I will watch Cable on Chron live,..good for a laugh,..hes been with Davis all day getting told what to say.

  190. Norco Bob Says:

Oh great, cat-eater Tim Kawakami is on the show.

  191. 24 Says:

    Chron live or KRON live?

  192. blackdeath29 Says:

darrius heyward-bey will report tonite and practice thursday.this is good because it tells me he`s going to stay in the bay area for awhile and work out here.mike mitchell can not report till june 6th and will miss the next ota per league rules.

  193. 24 Says:

Maybe a QB has to be an idiot or drunk or fat in order to win the Superbowl? Sweet!

  194. Norco Bob Says:

    Chron.

  195. DKnight007 Says:

    Norco,

Are you off your meds today buddy?

You okay? Your writing suggests your about to have a heart attack…..

  196. Lynn from Snot Says:

One thing that doesn’t bode well having a fat QB is its that much easier to shred a knee carrying extra weight. HEY HEY HEY

  197. Norco Bob Says:

Im never off meds,…I am actually feeling great as I see hope, I see now that they brought in Garcia to play, not to mentor,..I hate Russell and want him off the team.

  198. blackdeath29 Says:

    Norco Bob ,
hate russell .that`s a strong word.

  199. Norco Bob Says:

Cable not on the Chron Live show yet,..Al Davis has to talk to him first to tell him what to say,..but Al isnt sure who Cable is so he sent Herrera to show him.

  200. Norco Bob Says:

I wouldnt use the word hate but cant find harsher word.

  201. blackdeath29 Says:

    Norco Bob ,
    why?

  202. Norco Bob Says:

Death if you have to ask why, then I wont waste my time,…you and your Russell jersey deserve each other.

  203. Norco Bob Says:

I just want Russell to take his 32 million dollar bonus and go away….and by the way thats what he wants to do also.

  204. Norco Bob Says:

I will tell you this,…Im in the north endzone,..real close to the field,..I boo`d him all last year, and by the end of the season about the entire section was,..I will start chant again if he plays,..Garcia is so much better then him its not funny.

  205. blackdeath29 Says:

    Norco Bob ,
    don`t have a russell jersey,but i just don`t get the russell hatred.

  206. SnB Defense Says:

Quite frankly…it seems Russell is the most unpopular Quarterback in the league. Its clear the only support he enjoys is from teammates, coaches and a handful of fans.

I have to say I am genuniely surprised by the level of vitrol in here over the quarterback. Wow…

The ONLY chance the Raiders have of winning for the next 5 years or so rests on the shoulders of JaMarcus Russell. I will go on record as saying that he is a good QB that will only get better.

If you are wishing for QBs that haven’t won anywhere else in their pro career to start (read Garcia, Gratkowski etc) you are wishing for another 2-14 season. Garcia is terrible quarterback.

And remmeber, Russell beat Garcia head 2 head and all 3 QBs are struggling to get their timing, accuracy, snaps counts etc….in this early part of the offseason.

Did I mention that Garcia is on the Raiders because he couldn’t beat Oakland at home in a game for the playoffs. You really want to start Josh Mc…oops Jeff Garcia over Russell…I say you don’t know football.

BTW, those pictures were probably taken around the time of his ankle surgery….

    Gimmie a break!

  207. blackdeath29 Says:

    Norco Bob ,
last time i saw garcia in a game he choked away the 4th quarter with a playoff berth on the line.

  208. Norco Bob Says:

Death,..when hes off the team I wont hate him anymore.

  209. Norco Bob Says:

Hardly death,…the old tired D of the Bucs folded.

  210. Norco Bob Says:

Cable on Chron Live now,…spewing Davis`s company line.

  211. Norco Bob Says:

I think Al Davis has told Cable that he has to work in the phrase “throw deep” in every sentence or hes fired.

  212. Norco Bob Says:

Sounds like Cable wants Mike Vick.

  213. SnB Defense Says:

    Head 2 Head

    JaMarcus Russell: 14/21 67% 148yds 2 TDs 1 INT 99 Rating

    Jeff Garcia: 17/33 51% 257yds 1 TD 1 INT 75 Rating

Now which QB was on the road and which one was at home?

Which QB was playing for a playoff berth?

Which QB had the better team?

    Gimmie a break

  214. Norco Bob Says:

Im outta here,…..remember though,…Jeff Garcia 2009,…Tim Tebow 2010. Youre welcome.

    ——————
    That’s a flat out lie.

I was watching the show too. He said Vick shouldn’t worry about football right now.

  216. blackdeath29 Says:

    SnB Defense ,
don`t forget garcia last three drives.

    1.incomplete on 4th down
    2.interception
    3.sack,game over out of playoffs

  217. Dude Says:

Did someone just put up head to head stats as evidence?? LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just as some are so anti Russell that they cant think straight others(SnB) are so pro Russell that they dont think straight. I fall somewhere in the middle. Does he have talent? Yep. Do I believe he will be a Pro Bowl caliber QB? Nope. I see a guy who by all appearances is lazy and rests on his laurels. All you need to do is look at the guy to see his work ethic is severly lacking. That does not bode well for a QB. Please spare me with all his stats. He was babied last year so bad it got embarrasing. He is not a good QB, whether he ever is is obviously up to him.

  218. AZ Raider Says:

Maybe I’m just in a bad mood but only this to say about the OTA’s? Means they looked horrible. I’m beginning to lose faith in the QB I wanted to draft (and for once got my wish). Someone has to take control of the huddle and it just doesnt look like JR has it in him. Maybe there’ll be a franchise QB availible when we pick at #3 next year…

  219. Norco Bob Says:

Cable did say he wanted Vick when he didnt say the Raiders dont have any interest,..alot of teams are flat out saying we wont have any interest in Vick,..Cable was very complimentary about Vick,..he will be a Raider, no doubt about it.

  220. SnB Defense Says:

    Dude,

The issue for me is that a QB with only 16 career starts is just getting started. Regardless of what some may say, Russell played well in several games last year and got better as the season progressed. I am also a believer that young QBs take time to develop. I also think that his 1st year was effectively a red shirt because he missed training camp. That was everything. Russell has to have a good season this year. Not a great season but a good one. He needs 3,000 yds passing, 18 to 20 TDS and about 10 INTs. 85+ QB Rating. But I will hold judgement until the end of this upcoming season. Not at a practice session in May with half the team missing.

I will let you in on a bias I do have. I don’t like veteran QBs from other teams as a solution to the QB. Teams don’t get rid of good QBs unless there is a Broncos like falling out or something. Spare me the Jim Plunkett reference. That was back in the day when scouting and such wasn’t as sophisticated. If you are starting an old veteran free agent…your team is probably not successfull and is employing a stop gap at best. But recently, Oakland didn’t use vets as stop gaps…they used them as a solution and the result has been an unmitigated disaster for 25 years!

Stick with Russell and keep working with him.

  221. Dude Says:

I thought Cable was a kind of a buffoon before he was hired full time but over the last 4 or 5 months my opinion has changed. He is a complete 100% BUFFOON. OMG the guy couldnt be more of an ass kisser if he tried, which I believe he is doing by the way. He sounds like he is reading from a script written by Al Davis. He is totally embarrasing himself and he will lose this team by week 8. I predict his reign will approach Art ShellII.

  222. Dude Says:

He absolutely did NOT have a good season. His numbers are total BS. This is a serious question for you: Honestly, did you actually watch all the Raiders games last year?

  223. Norco Bob Says:

The Raiders had a golden opportunity last february,..Gruden was available,..should have given him anything he wanted to return to Oakland,..but instead Al Davis hired a nobody O line coach,..unbelievable,…but Al couldnt push Gruden around so that was the end of that. Cable is a joke…however will take him over Kiffin, which was ludicrous.

  224. raiderjhawk Says:

I say anyone who goes to a Raiders game and sits in the north endzone and boos our starting qb. the whole game isn’t a real raider fan – he is a poser and he doesn’t need to be there at all. As a matter of fact if I paid to sit there and some idiot dressed in raiders gear booed the whole game I think I’d throw a beer at him.

  225. KoolKell Says:

    Listen junkie,

So you read between those fuzzy lines, and came up with Cable wanted Vick?

    He said no such thing!

  226. raiderjhawk Says:

he must have OD’d or something.

  227. Dude Says:

Cable probably does want Vick, cause he can GO DEEP!! LOL!!!

He absolutely did NOT have a good season. His numbers are total BS. This is a serious question for you: Honestly, did you actually watch all the Raiders games last year?
    =======================================================
I didn’t say he had a good season. It was a developmental year for him. Many young QBs don’t have good seasons to start out. Its also not realistic to think a young QB is going to light up the earth in his first season either.

All I am saying is that making a value judgement after the 1st yr as a starter is not fair given his potential. I think the bust conversation that everyone wants to have is 1 year premature. If and that’s a big if…he bombs this year…then yes, have the discussion of going back to old washed up veterans like Josh McCown or Aaron Brooks. But not before…I also think the Raiders gave up on Andrew Walter to early for the same reasons. QB is the hardest position in sports. It takes time to get the speed of the game, terminology, offensive systems, chemistry with teammates etc….I think Raider fans in particular and sports observers generally are all wrong on Russell right now.

  232. raiderjhawk Says:

I’m not ready to give up on Russ yet either, if he stinks this year then maybe it is time to dump him, we haven’t even seen the 2009 Oakland Raiders in a game yet and all these posers and wannabe’s hang on every single article or report that comes out and are already ready to throw in the towel and say we suck.

  233. r8rpaver Says:

To say nothing about the kid (22 years old) had to deal with the Kiffin Davis feud,3 diffrent play callers, 2 head coaches and no stability around him..Get off the kids back, give him some stability and watch him grow…your welcome

  234. vegas raider Says:

Thankfully the Raiders gave up on Andrew Walter at the right time; he is awful. That pretty-boy will fail miserably in any tough late season cold east coast road game. Out of the league in a few years.

  235. vegas raider Says:

We are watching him grow all right. About 6 inches in the waist.

  236. r8rpaver Says:

I will also be willing to bet that the Colts have an off year, new HC,new OC,new line coach..even with Mannings experience he has to learn a new system..be it small changes but still they might struggle this year

  237. SnB Defense Says:

    Vegas Raider,

We don’t know what Andrew Walter could do. He was playing in a system that wasn’t professional. He had a receiver that didn’t try, another receiver suspended, a playbook that didn’t incorporate checkdowns, plodding running backs, the worst offensive line in league history and a head coach that was 10 to 15 years behind the times.

It would have been a sound strategy to go with Walter and draft Calvin Johnson. But Kiffin didn’t like Walter at all and that was that.

Now with Russell, who I like, you have to give him time to develop. We knew that when they drafted him. He’s a junior that played in a street ball league (I believe the SEC and Big 12 are the worst places for a QB to develop) and he has to unlearn some of that. Same thing will happen to Stafford because the SEC is like the And 1 Mix-Tape tour. Russell was also a young Junior….he had no talent at receiver while here in Oakland and didn’t even get the chance to be in training camp his 1st year. Relegated him to an observer for his first year.

Teams that are successfull have great systems to develop players. Right now, the dysfunction that is Oakland is on full display and its set the entire team back…not just Russell

  238. vegas raider Says:

Ask any veteran in the NFL, they will tell you that Sundays are won on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and in the off-season.

Jamarcus needs to take pride in his craft and live up to his immense talent. He ain’t going to do that gaining weight in the offseason, blowing off camps and throwing 6 yard passes at guys feet because he hasn’t caught his rhythm yet.

I do believe that he will continue to improve during the season like he did last year and build on the stellar end to last season. However, I was holding out hope for a HUGE leap, and that’s not off to the best start so far. We must consider it is only May though.

  239. SnB Defense Says:

I believe Russell is held back by the talent around him. Interestingly enough, Russell could figure out a way to get the ball to Zach Miller. That’s because Miller has talent finds a way to get open and holds on to the ball.

Lelie was a track star bust of a receiver who is out of the league

Curry dropped so many passes and has no speed

Walker was at 60% (that’s what he admitted to)

Drew Carter didn’t make it out of preseason…

I think if Carter somehow made it…it would have been a different season for Russell. Those other guys he had to throw to were not real targets to work with.

  240. SnB Defense Says:

    Vegas Raider,

I don’t think anyone outside of the Raider organization konws where Russell’s head is at. Cable made some comments in preseason and everyone is just running hard after that.

Russell is in the his make or break season for better or for worse. If he falters this year his career is over. If he steps it up he will be a star. Again, let’s see the results after this year.

But should Russell falter…I hope Al Davis fires every offensive coach on the staff because it is really up to them to develop this young talent on the roster.

  241. vegas raider Says:

    SnB,

I like the And1 reference, the SEC is tough for QB’s because of the freakish leap in speed it is from the HS level. The SEC does have “NFL” bodies all over the place, so there is a toughness that you gotta like from SEC guys, and Jamarcus does have a little of that in him. But your right, SEC playbooks are very “collegiate” if you will.

Now, you know I have supported Russell tirelessly in here. I just got his jersey. I defend him when I hear people clowning him and calling him a bust. But we should not just ignore what happened today. The Bay Area media is not out to get anyone, if Mark Sanchez in New York was over-throwing guys for picks and than underthrowing 5 yard passes at a non-contact, open camp to the media, it might lead off SportsCenter. They would kill him. Jamarcus was probably down-right awful today. I demand more from him and so should his teammates.

  242. vegas raider Says:

I didn’t address the Walter comment so here we go. No pocket presence, scared of contact, horrible body language and no patience or mobility. I know he got killed that year and was dealt a horrible hand, but some guys will respond to the adversity and man-up and some will cower and act like a girl. That’s what he did, and you can’t have that from a QB. Sure if he goes to a “great” organization he might be OK but not great, but what QB in the league with 3rd round talent wouldn’t?

  243. Terrapin Says:

Its practice. So let it be just that. Surely, its worrisome to read issues w/ accuracy etc but you really don’t know what is going on there. Old Paul could be teaching him new things w/ footwork/release and all, which could be causing some erratic ism. Seems plausible w/ a new QB coach.

But over the long term it may be very beneficial to Russell. Still, if you need comfort just go back to last season and throughout Russell college career. Overall, he is very accurate! …emphasis added

  244. SnB Defense Says:

    Vegas Raider,

In my uninformed opinion, because I am not there, my guess is that the offensive scheme they are putting in is causing some issue with the QBs. The reports say all 3 QBs are struggling and that WRs are being hounded on routes and other stuff. I say this because Cable keeps talking about teaching and new offense and fundamentals. Plus he said they were dealing with situational football. What situations are they asking them to complete.

If Garcia, a veteran that I am not wild about, is equally as bad out there and Gratkowski was horrible, then I think there is more to it then just them being inaccurate. I am not saying this as an excuse because as I’ve said before…the only thing that matter is the regular season…

And you know what…if the coaches are building the offense from the ground up and there are struggles early on….fine…what people forget is that mistakes are what practice is for.

  245. vegas raider Says:

I know it’s just practice, and believe me, I don’t think he is going to be throwing all his 6 yard passes at people’s feet. I simply feel he didn’t perform well today becuase he just isn’t ready. Some guys can have off-season rust and just got through the motions at an OTA, the QB can’t. It sets a poor example.

For instance, the reporters say he let out a S bomb after throwing another awful pass and screwing up the flow of a practice. It’s great to see some emotion (the media was even shocked) but he needs to be good enough in practice so he can yell those S bombs at OTHER guys who screw up, so they think they got to step it up for the big fella. That’s what it’s all about as an NFL Quarterback.

Off to dinner, Raider On folks!!!!! Just a little ticked, ain’t going to be booing guys at games like Norco.

  246. SnB Defense Says:

    Vegas Raider,

From a contrarian point of view…I think the offense struggling early on will only make it clear to all involved how much work they have to do.

They said the normally mild-mannered Russell was cursing himself after a bad pass. Maybe that’s the result of observing Garcia’s intensity. Other players have been heard doing the same. My guess is that after the OTAs and film study…the players, especially Russell, will realize EXACTLY how much work is left to be done.

Imagine if he was just performing at 150% right now. Well, if everyone is right about his work ethic…then how much harder would he work in training camp if the OTAs were flawless walks in the park.

I think this is good in a contrarian sort of way. The entire offense AND coaching staff know that with a new offense, new players and pressure to win…that they have to get better.

  247. raiderkoolaid Says:

The way a lot of you guys talk about Russell it is like he was horrible last year. He wasn’t real good, but he wasn’t horrible, and he showed flashes of really coming around. The game at Denver he was real good, and the last three weeks of the season against The Pats, Houston, and Tampa Bay he looked solid. He was still the youngest QB in the league last year. I agree that this is a make or break year this year. I don’t think that he has to be great this year, but he does have to show continued improvement. It is still too early to declare him a bust, but a lack luster year and it will be looking like it.

  248. Mistabrown Says:

C’mon guys J Russ is not that fat!

    Sincerely
    Ralphie May

  249. KoolKell Says:

That “contrarian” point of view is quite impressive spin.

  250. 6M5M Says:

it takes russel that long to get used to his new players? cutler is having an excellent camp and his accuracy with a new team and his new players is great. i guess garcia will be coming in sooner than i thought

Bro, it was 420!!! That was one long, strong, and nice session!!! lol

Talk to you tomorrow bro, take care.

  252. Raider O Says:

    What’s up guys?

  253. priesttj Says:

SnB as valiant as it has been yu are fighting a losing battle. The general nature of most people is react negatively to something. They expect the worst. The concept of a process is just not palitable for them, they want results so they can feel comfortable.

Unfortunately for them playing QB in the NFL is and will always be a process. It’s the most difficult position to play in sports and a young QB will always get the brunt of the fans ire as he has to learn the ropes. Russell being who he is nothing really that hasn’t been seen a hundred times. By experienced NFL personnel they know what he’s going through and they know what to expect and what they’re looking at. Fans DO NOT neither does the media.

The problem with our day is the amount of media coverage that zeros in on athletes. You said it right they react to every pass completed or otherwise. It’s pandemonium a constant feeding frenzy on info by every crackpot writer, blogger and media outlet available. Athletes, coaches and management simply cannot react to this stuff or they’ll go nuts. The program Cable and his coaches have installed has to be run to the letter, and the less they pay attention to what fans and media have to say the more successful they’ll be.

Trust me Cable is fully aware of that fact. Or he definitely wouldn’t have taken this job. Russell is obviously aware of that fact just based on his comments.

These guy’s are beyond ridiculous with the ‘Oh we is me’ response to every report, it’s absolute lunacy.

But far be it from me to suggest that everyone just relax let the process take it’s course there is nothing else that you can do unless you just want to pee your pants at every pix and report concerning the Raiders.

The games start in Sept. until then enjoy what you read and just be infomed and then you’ll see if what they were doing made sense or not.

Anything else is your own fault……….period

  254. Raider O Says:

    BHP,
Are we still talking about JR!?

I think these players will have a great season:
1- Z Miller: we added a few more REs, so wecan free Miller to have his PB season.
2- JR: he has all the weapons he needs. He can do great things, if the Oline plays Descent.
3- Chaz: he is having a great camp so far, and it should continue to the regular season. 4-
DMC: time to show off that doped, since he us healthy. He can catch too.
5-Bush: no need for words, we all know what this beast can do.
JLH: will be a great slot WR. will not have a lot of catches, but will have a lot of all purpose

  255. Raider O Says:

    All purpose yards, sorry.

    Now, on Defense:

1- T Scott: he added 10 pounds, he is at 258 now. He led all rookies last year with 5 sacks.
2- T Branch: this kid can cover since he played CB at UConn, but he likes to hit too.
3- Mike Mitchell: I just like this kid!! lol
4- TH & Kirk: if the Dline plays well under Marshall, then these two might have a PB season.
    5- Nnamdi: he is Nnamdi!!!

  256. priesttj Says:

Raider O, you just delineated the biggest reassons for my optimism with Russell and the entire offense.

The talent around him, it’s what makes any QB successful as Kenny stabler clearly stated on KNBR. It takes a team to make a great QB. Russell is putting in the work, it’s just early in the process. I really like what Garcia had to say and NO ONE focused on that because it wasn’t negative about Russell.

That running game will dictate to a great degree where we will be at seasons end. It wil also be Russell’s best friend.

  257. Raider O Says:

    Players on the hot seat:

1- TK: last year was due to his knee injury, but this year he had no exuse.

2- M Huff: he was the 7th pick, and this year he has help from Marshall, and the hound Ss.

Ken Stabler says Raiders must simplify matters for JaMarcus Russell
    By CAM INMAN
    Contra Costa Times
Ken Stabler has wonderful advice for the Oakland Raiders and quarterback JaMarcus Russell.
Considering how absolutely terrible they looked in Wednesday’s practice, they better listen up. Plus, Stabler only happens to be the franchise’s best quarterback ever.
“They have some exciting talent that needs to get on the same page, get focused and get back the Raiders’ toughness of running the football and playing stingy defense,” Stabler said in an exclusive interview this week. “They need to simplify things for (Russell) and run the ball. Darren McFadden needs to touch the ball 30 to 35 times a game.”
Amen to that. A simple, McFadden run down the left sideline served as a rare highlight Wednesday amidst Russell’s wild passes, young receivers’ incorrect alignments and the defense’s erratic efforts.
Stabler hasn’t kept in close contact with the Raiders the past few decades. He’s been watching them “out of the corner of my eye” from his native Alabama. But he plans to be a visible ambassador during the franchise’s 50-year anniversary, and that includes his stint as grand marshal of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway on June 21.
Of particular interest to him is Russell, who played high school football in Stabler’s hometown of Mobile.
“He has all the tools,” Stabler said. “He’s big, strong, can move around and has a big arm. But from what I understand, the game doesn’t come easy to him.
“It came easy to me. I played in much simpler times. Once I learned the system and the great players around me, it was ‘go play’ and things came easy for me.
Things don’t come easy to JaMarcus.”
No, they don’t. But coach Tom Cable said Wednesday the Raiders’ revamped offense is indeed being simplified. Cable added that “a tremendous amount of new stuff” must be learned, including a heavier dose of down-the-field throws that cater to Russell’s bazooka arm.
“We try to make it more conducive to quicker learning,” Cable said.
Russell said the system is similar to the one he’s learned his first two years with the Raiders. “But it has different terminology,” added Russell, who seems excited about the adjustments made under Cable and new assistants Paul Hackett and Ted Tollner.
As for Russell and Stabler, they haven’t had much dialogue outside of an interview from when Russell played at Louisiana State and Stabler worked as a University of Alabama radio analyst (a job Stabler held for 10 years before stepping away last season).
“When I get a chance, I will,” Russell answered when asked if he’s sought Stabler for advice.
Rather than wait for that chance meeting, Russell should visit or call Stabler, who speaks as if he’s still in the huddle on the verge of a successful comeback.
As for Russell’s much-scrutinized work ethic, Stabler said: “I’m not around JaMarcus in that setting, but I shouldn’t have to be. As a quarterback, you take Peyton (Manning) and what’s said about him; he should be a model for every quarterback, to go outwork everyone on the field, in the film room and in game planning.
“I didn’t really work at the game. I didn’t have to,” Stabler added. “The game came easy to me. Once we learned the system, we could play, but you have to look at the people in the system. When there are four Hall of Famers on offense …”
Yes, unlike Stabler, Russell hasn’t had four Hall of Famers on his side of the ball, or even any Pro Bowlers.
“I’m the last one to tell somebody about work ethic,” Stabler said. “On the field, I worked hard and understood the system. … It was old school, simple football – just go play.”
Stabler, a three-time Hall of Fame finalist and overdue enshrinee, quarterbacked the Raiders to their first Super Bowl championship in the 1976 season.
“It’s not only about a team laced with a lot of ability, but an attitude of refusing to lose, that we’ll find a way,” Stabler said. “Playing for John, he gave us so much room for what we wanted to be on and off the field, and we didn’t take advantage of it. We worked hard for him because of that. The ‘76 season was great for everybody.”
The Raiders’ past six seasons have been as far from great as possible. But perhaps they, too, will find a way if they heed Stabler’s advice about a simpler role for Russell, more action from McFadden, a hard-nosed rushing attack, better offensive-line play and stingier defense.
Simply put, Stabler is saying to the Raiders: “Gentlemen, start your engines.”

The Oakland Raiders have come to agreement with Air Asia X, which is a low-budget long-haul airliner that primarily serves Asia.

I think it’s better off for us to leave where it’s at right now.”

    good news for the defense!

  289. priesttj Says:

For the locals, if you read Cam Inman’s article in the Oakland Tribune this morning yu’ll see why I have such contempt for the media and will always have contempt for them.

A couple of days ago Kenny Stabler did an interview on KNBR radio station. I listened with implicit interest because I knew that Russell was going to come up. I had called the station earlier that day concerning Russell.

Well Cam Inman as writers seem to always do took what Kenny said and twisted it to meet his own agenda. Misquoting him on two occasions. Kenny said and I remember the quote exactly (those interested can listen by logging onto KNBR.com on the Fitz and Brooks show) he said that the game came easy to him but he DIDN”T know if the game came easy to Russell because he doesn’t know him. Well Cam’s squote in his article say’s that Kenny said the game DOES NOT come easy to Russel twisting it. Kenny also said that the reason the game came easy to him was due to “simpler offenses and the talent around him”. He suggested that the Raiders simplify the offense to fit Russell and put the ball in DMC’s hands 25-30 times a game because he watched DMC play a lot and what he thought of him. He also mentioned that he rarely sees the Raiders live and isn’t close to them as he’d like to be. Both Russell and Kenny come from the same town.

My problem is Cam changed the meaning behind Kenny’s comment on Russell and for what? why not quote exactly? because he has his own agenda which is to make the reader think Kenny feels that Russell struggles with learning pro level offense. And that is exactly why I do not react to everything that I read.

Both the interview and the article can be consumed if your interested on this website and KNBR.com. And judge for yourself.

  290. hwnrdr Says:

So with all that being said…can we expect our defense to be a much better unit this year? But then again, Kelly knocked down Fargas…hmmm…I have seen him fall by himself! Nonetheless, it could be a good sign.

  291. hwnrdr Says:

    Q: Has he gotten bigger?

Coach Cable: Yeah, he’s at the right size now in terms of where he needs to be weigh-wise. His strength is good. I think he’s right where he needs to be. Now it’s just learning to play the game every down.

Q: Can he play at that size with enough leverage and strength to defend the run?

Coach Cable: I think so. We may not put him in one place all the time but certainly yeah, he has proven that.

Heard a good point on the future of Mike Vick as an NFL QB. In Atlanta he had a whole offensive system catered around him, and he still had a below 55% comp pct and under 75 rating. If coaches didn’t excel with him, they were canned and released (I think he had 3 coaches and 4 OC’s). He will not get that type of lee-way ever again, and it will be like fitting a square peg in a round whole.

Now can he be a “Wildcat” guy and rove around for 5-10 plays, absolutely. 16 game starter as a QB, never again.

Agreed. Mark Schlereth said there are not 32 starting QB’s in the NFL right now better than Mike Vick.

Herm Edwards said that he’d take Vick over Favre right now if he were the Vikings.

Herm said that it’s not about the money anymore for Vick. you’ve got to give your kids 2 things and neither one is money. your last name (reputation) and wisdom. he’s got 2 kids and he needs to make it right.

Mark said Goodell OWES it to Vick to reinstate him right away so that he can pay off his creditors. He owes a lot of money to a lot of people after going bankrupt

Trent Dilfer said he should sit behind a real QB and relearn football for 4 years. LOL. then maybe a team would take a shot at him being the starting QB

Last week you had the final question to jerry in live chat.

    Classic! thanks for the laughs

  361. Dakota Says:

    Vegas,

I think that about sums it up on Vick. He sucks as a solid NFL QB. Did you see First Take the other day? They had the “Two Live Stews” or whatever they are called and they tried to make it into a race thing.

Paraphrasing, they said if the same thing had happened to Tom Brady would people be saying he had to come back and play WR?

Can you believe that? Tom Brady and Michael Vick are so at the opposite extremes it was laughable. Brady can actually complete passes. Vick can’t. End of story. It’s not a black and white thing. If Vick was a successful NFL QB in the first place no one would be talking about him playing another position. It’s about talent and Vick is lucky to maybe have the talent to play somewhere else on the football field because he has been a failure at being a solid NFL QB.

  362. SnB Defense Says:

I am getting tired of hearing about this “wildcat”. It doesn’t work all that well. Now teams drafting players to run the wildcat…for what 5 plays a game tops….I think the wildcat can only work with a running back because of the element of surprise in throwing the ball.

But if you put Vick or Pat White back there…then you’ll play him like any other mobile quarterback.

    Stupid

  363. Dakota Says:

Vick’s completion percentage would be 25% if he didn’t have Alge Crumpler in the ATL, lol.

  364. Norco Bob Says:

666,..stay tuned, I have something for him again today.

  365. SnB Defense Says:

The reason why mobile quarterbacks struggle in the NFL is because they play in stupid college programs like the SEC and Big 12.

I’ve said this 1000x….The SEC and Big 12 IS NOT REAL FOOTBALL which is why Crabtree and Maclin were passed over and why Russell has to unlearn all the football he played at LSU.

That Graham Harrell kid wasn’t even drafted….Tell me the last decent QB from the state of Florida (Miami, Florida State or Florida)…..Stafford will struggle like Russell has because again….the SEC is street ball….the AND 1 TOURNAMENT….the Wildcat is just more SEC nonsense.

The Big East, MAC, PAC 10 and non-BCS have the best talent at the QB position…and save me the references to Peyton/Eli Manning or Jay Cutler.

Everyone knows that if 2 brothers excel like the Mannings…its probably not the school but their NFL QB father, and good genetics…and Vanderbilt is not a real SEC school.

    S&B defense:

the wildcat got the Dolphins to the playoffs. it took a ton of pressure off of Chad Peepeetongue and he had an excellent season (even stayed healthy!)

when you hand the ball of to a talented RB like Ronnie Brown or Darren McFadden, thats goign to suck the defense in to try and stop him. Then you throw it out to a Michael Bush, Zach Miller, Higgins or DHB and you’ve got the potential for a big gain.

problem is the wildcat we tried last season didn’t work because we weren’t risky enough with it. how many of those plays were just mcfadden or fargas runs up the middle for a short gain or loss? 9 out of 10 i’d say … plus Bush & Higgins weren’t very involved until injuries forced them in the lineup

  368. SnB Defense Says:

That’s why Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford and Tim Tebow stayed in college.

  369. Norco Bob Says:

There is zero doubt that Garcia will emerge from Napa as starter…as I have said, if all qb`s on roster were making same money,..it would be Garcia starter,..Gradkowski 2nd string,..whoevers left at 3rd string,..Russell cut…period,…but Russell is in the the middle of a contract that allows him to steal 62 million dollars, so he cannot be cut as of today,..manageable after the 2009 year though,..so he will be here this year, with headphones on on sidelines,..probably not listening to OC,..but rather some local rap.

  370. SnB Defense Says:

    Rockstar,

The wildcat is a gimmick offense. It worked in Miami by Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are good running backs. That’s why it worked.

I wouldn’t wasted much time with it. I think its a fad…just like SEC football…take the ball…drop back and throw it….or hand it off and run it.

That wildcat will go nowhere next year

  371. Norco Bob Says:

  375. SnB Defense Says:

    Norco Bob,

Maybe if the Raiders signed Kurt Warner, he was a free agent, then I could see Russell getting benched.

But not for Jeff Garcia. He’s a below average QB that has one playoff run to show for his last 12 years in the league. If he was any good…Minnesota would have given him the keys to city.

Garcia is a terrible QB. I would rather watch DMAC direct snap it every play than see Garcia take one snap from scrimmage. Now Garcia 12 years ago….maybe

  376. RaiderRockstar Says:

The wildcat is a gimmick offense. It worked in Miami by Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams are good running backs. That’s why it worked.

DMC & Bush are good running backs too. DMC made that gimmick offense famous in Arkansas, remember? only difference is they called it the wild hog instead and he was paired up with Felix Jones

  377. SnB Defense Says:

  378. SnB Defense Says:

    Rockstar,

But the “Wild Hog” was SEC ball. The SEC is the worst football I’ve ever seen on television. Its predicated on getting bigger and faster players than the opposition and then just beating them with speed and size. No Xs and Os in college. That’s why so many SEC/Big 12 players struggle mightily in the pros

  379. Dakota Says:

Come on, Russell isn’t getting benched this season. No way. Al won’t allow it…that would be admitting Kiffin was right!

  381. SnB Defense Says:

    Dakota,

Russell has to show progress this year. If by the end of this year he hasn’t improved to a “serviceable QB” then it will be time to go back to the Josh McCown/Jeff George strategy.

  382. SnB Defense Says:

But if Russell were to fail…which I don’t think he will…it really will be an indictment on the Raiders. They really have not done the things necessary to develop a young QB. Coaching changes, bungled contract negotiations, multiple offensive systems, lousy O-Lineman…

Yes Russell has to personally step up his game….but the Raiders haven’t exactly raised up Russell like the Colts did with Manning

  383. BART Bridge Blues Says:

I don’t see how any performance by Russell could be worse than a “Josh McCown/Jeff George Strategy” just let him play, anybody can hand the ball off to McFadden and Bush for the next few years, might as well be our multi-million dollar investment.

  384. vegas raider Says:

    Dakota,

Yeah shocking that First Take had two knuckleheads who didn’t what they were taking about. I just don’t see Vick being able to provide much at any other position, it’s not like he would embrace a WR role and be blocking on run plays.

Do you guys remember before he called “Norco Boob” he went by the name “Alameda Ins!der”. LMAO!

Norco Boob’s new name: Captain Delusional. Or maybe Reggie Rehab, he sure as hell needs to get off the drugs. It is clearly deteriorating his normal, everyday functions, as well as stopping him from having any kind of cohesive thought process.

  387. BART Bridge Blues Says:

Has Vick ever played WR at any level? You can’t even assume that he will be a below-average WR at the NFL level; he has never had to run routes, catch the ball or block. Whoever takes Vick would use him as a Wildcat QB and that is all, like a run-first team with a noodle-armed starting QB.

  388. Dakota Says:

Oh yes, the Raiders have certainly put Russell behind the 8-ball with all the chaos and BS, but he also has to take some personal responsibility and step up his game this year. No excuses this time. The coach is in place. The world’s fastest WR is in place. He had a QB camp just for him. The o-line must be great because we passed on great tackles and centers!

Sink or swim Russell…I have faith that he will swim (really, who couldn’t swim with all that blubber?)

  389. RaiderRockstar Says:

come on S&B. you can’t be serious. this guy is quite possibly the BEST back up QB in the league. He’s had success for San Fran, Philly and Tampa Bay. yes he struggled for the Browns and Lions. What QB for those 2 teams hasn’t? he’s not terrible. he’s not below average. he’s not josh mccown

should Russell start? yes. is garcia past his prime? yes. garcia has a lisp, he’s short and he has happy feet. gotta give credit where credit is due though too. This guy makes plays. He’s a winner. He’s a hard worker and a professional. If Russell spends 10 years in the league, 9 of them being a starter many of us will be happy with that. especially if he can take us to the playoffs or make the pro bowl. Russell is the man in Oakland, but thats no reason to hate on Garcia.

and if you want to compare these 2 players, compare all of last season. not 1 lowsy game. the Bucs beat Atlanta, Carolina, New Orleans and Green Bay last year. Does that make Jeff Garcia a better QB than Matt Ryan, Jake Delhomme, Drew Brees or Aaron Rodgers? it’s a team sport man. think about it …

  391. edward teach Says:

Garcia is a little b*tch. That radio interview in LA proved it. The hell with “being competetive”. How about being a team player? I don’t care if the guy competes his ass off, saying stuff like that to the media is NOT what a professional does, especially one that’s been brought in here specifically (according to the head coach of this team) to back up and to mentor Russell.

Cut him now. He can’t make the throws anyway, and if JaMarcus struggle early he’ll be the first one lining up for an interview. We don’t need that.

  392. Dakota Says:

    Edward,

If Russell can’t handle a little competition then maybe we should cut him and not Garcia.

  394. edward teach Says:

It’s not the competition I’m worried about Dakota. Competition is great. Mouthing off to the media about it is not something a professional does, especially one that’s had his role identified for him before he even signed a contract.

Compete, fine. Just keep the other stuff in-house. The media is not going to name you the starting quarterback.

  395. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

I am sure that Russell feels the heat from the media, the fans, the coaches and most importantly us bloggers.

If he can do it this year with all this on the line then it may be time to talk about bust but he deserves at least another 16 games before we all nail him to the cross.

This is the year he has to come of age and I am sure he is aware of it.

That’s because those teams were so complete in so many ways and had a limited window to take advantage of the talent on the roster…read the current Vikings….and had to try to strike while the iron was hot.

The Raiders are not nearly complete of a team…Its a youngish team. A team that needs the QB to mature along with them so that they can make multiple playoff/S.B appearances over a 10 year span. That’s the secret.

The Colts won a S.B…but that was the result of several playoff runs…the Pats have made several playoff/SB runs…Steelers same thing. Even the Eagles, although they haven’t closed the deal, have been to FIVE NFC Championship games in the last 8 or 9 years.

You look at teams like the Bears, Ravens, Bucs and soon to be Cardinals…those teams are one and done. They couldn’t make several appearances…It was one shot and done because ultimately their quarterbacks couldn’t keep up or retired.

Playing Garcia would be a waste of time outside of an injury. He’s 40 and done in a year and even if he’s hot his physical decline will be precipitous and he will be out of the league. Personally, they would have been well-off going after a Rex Grossman or J.P Losman as a backup…that way, if those players were pressed into action and performed well…they would still have 8 to 10 years of good football left….

  412. vegas raider Says:

    SnB,

I don’t want Garcia one bit. The point we agree on is that we are not a complete team, or at least not yet. Russell is going to have to play like he did the last few weeks if we are going to be competitive week in and week out, because the D may improve, but will still be below average.

The teams that make perennial playoff runs of late: Colts, Pats, Ravens, Steelers and Eagles, either have a great QB or a great D (or both). Jamarcus is going to have play great for us to go 9-7, unless we both are missing something about the defense.

  413. RaiderRockstar Says:

SnB Defense : I understand your point in post #401, but just because Garcia is a back up who thinks he’s talented enough to be a starter doesn’t mean he’s a below average QB, a terrible QB, Josh McCown or DMC would be better off taking snaps from the QB position!

I bet you even Danny Southwick thinks he’s talented enough to be a starter in the NFL. If he was #2 on the depth chart and the media cared to interview him, he would happily tell them as much. it’s called confidence, not controversy. Garcia has had success in the NFL. Should he hang his head and tell the media that he’s a no talent scrub that’s lucky to latch on to an NFL team close to home? you guys are reading WAY too much into this. RaiderRockstar,

The general argument being proposed is that Garcia could beat out Russell and, as a result, help Oakland win games this year.

I just don’t believe he’s good enough to carry a team a full season. He’s a backup QB and has been for a long time. My point is that if this guy couldn’t win in Tampa, Detroit, Cleveland…and San Fran was quick to dispatch him…its a reach to suggest he’s going to do anything in Oakland more than 6-10 / 7-9.

I think he’s no better than Josh McCown. I am being serious when I say that…Josh is a backup QB. Now of course Garcia should feel confident in his own abilities. But people thinking he’s another Kurt Warner type are overrating his past performance.

Decent backup? Maybe…but so was Daunte Culpepper coming in. So was Aaron Brooks and KFC coming in. There was hype and hope because they were new. But looking at the record says something else to me…I guess I just have a big discount on vet QBs that didn’t have other teams competing for their services that end up in Oakland.

Ultimately, the Raiders best chance to win is with Russell…not only this year but for the long-term.

Wanna know why they didn’t resign him? they are rebuilding. you don’t rebuild with a 40 year old QB. also notice they let other older vets like Joey Galloway, Warrick Dunn and Derrick Brooks go who were productive there. Monte Kiffin, Jon Gruden, Bruce Allen = all gone. new OC and QB coach, etc.

they drafted Josh Freeman for pete’s sake. who would draft him if they wanted to win now?

Regarding the JR pics I didnt care about the chain, the cigar or even that he was drunk. The same can be said about many NFL players. I was commenting on that HUGE gut. Dude literally lookes 8 months preagnant.

The poster said it was from March. He is full of crap. That the exact same outfit (with the unlit cigar) that Poole described at the boxing match last week. You can even look at the room and tell that that is from the Oracle, in the VIP area downstairs.

Im sending them to ESPN and CBS Sportsline. Dude needs to be called out. Just for the record, I like Russ. He is extremly talented. I think that is his downside as well. Dude is so talented that he thinks that he can simply rely on that and NOT put in the work (ala Vick). Maybe some embarasement will light a fire under him.

  434. RaiderRockstar Says:

In a couple years when we win the bowl, what do you think Russell will sport. White mink? Jeans and a white tee with a million in ice?

Good point. But, as far as we know, Turd and Kelly aren’t bad guys. They just suck. Javon…Well, that’s just Al not wanting to admit he’s wrong. He can blame MeAngelo on Kiffin, but Javon is all Al.

    the system is this.

hire 2 old dudes who know the air coryell offense, since Al Saunders refused to work here.

draft a qb who can throw the ball 70 yards down field – doesn’t matter if he’s accurate

draft a rb who can take it to the house – doesn’t matter if he’s durable

draft a wr who runs the fastest 40 and send him racing down the sideline – doesn’t matter if he can catch or not

But now after hearing this crap about “changing terminology when it comes to the vertical passing game”

Russell could have 5 years experience in the Kiffin/Knapp offense and still not grow as a QB.

I can understand that….but it seemed like last year with Cable calling the plays and using that Cables terminology Russell was growing and the offense was scoring more points.

    =======================================================
Yeah, Garcia doesn’t fit this system at all. But I think this is a Cable signing. Cable likes “do-right” guys and Garcia is one of those scrappy players.

“Do-Right” guys are good to have on the roster….just not too many of them. The problem with a lot of “do-right” players is that they sometimes lack in the talent department and eventually that holds them back.

Now the best of both worlds is when you get a “do-right” guy AND he has the talent to go with it. Then you get guys like Peyton Manning or Tiger Woods.
