More OTA notes, quotes

Additonal notes and quotes from interviews gathered following the Raiders organized team activity Wednesday:

– Here was how Tom Cable described JaMarcus Russell’s struggles:

“Just being accurate and understanding where to throw the football and when,” Cable said.

The good news? Cable likes his footwork.

Cable stressed that it was a learning “OTA” heavy in situational play, and that the objective was to have the players comfortbale with the system changes in July so they’d be ready to compete.

– Here’s how Cable responded to reports of Burgess being traded:

“I do expect to go in with him here. But we get inquiries all the time about players and this football team. That one was kind of a surprise. There was some talk during the draft obviously but we get, people inquire about players on this team all the time. So we listen to everything.”

– Burgess is left end Trevor Scott is a right end, but if Burgess is moved Scott could end up a starter since Jay Richardson flopped sides last year.

Scott is keeping the Burgess issue at arm’s length.

“As far as Derrick goes, he’s a great inspiration, he’s a great leader when he’s on the field,” Scott said. “I haven’t really been paying attention to what’s going on,” Burgess said. “I heard a bunch of hearsay but that’s all it is right now. It’s just speculation. Only Derrick really knows what’s going on. I try to stay away from that and let him figure things out.”

Scott, who played last season at under 250 pounds, said he is nearing 260.

“I came back about 258 now,” Scott said. “My strength’s through the roof. I feel great, I feel explosive out there. A lot of the run game, though, as coach Board’s been teaching us, is all about technique and stuff. I just need to keep my hands in and just fight pressure with pressure.”

– Jeff Garcia shrugged off inquries regarding his desire to start a few days after hinting in a Los Angeles radio interview he would be ready to be a starter if called upon.

“I don’t really know or think that there’s a competition there,” Garcia said. “That is something that has already been determined. I’m just here to show that I’m very capable, if needed, to lead the position and to help the position get better and get stronger and to get more confident. That means helping JaMarcus become a better player himself and as much as he expects out of himself, that means me trying to help him expect more and to push him and to be able to show, through my experience on the field, what has been successful for me and how I’ve been able to make it work.

“And I think that’s the main thing as far as just helping the position to get better. He’s got a great attitude. He’s working hard and I just want to help him just continue that path.”

– Garcia’s father Bob, wearing a baseball camp with his son’s initials on it, was a practice observer.

– Cable said the club hasn’t given any thought to trying Michael Huff at cornerback.

– Safety Tyvon Branch, lost to shoulder surgery early in his rookie season, said he is completely healed and looking forward to putting on the pads in July.

Together with rookie Mike Mitchell, if all goes according to play, the Raiders will pair two rising star safeties with a taste for contact.

“People are going to expect us to lay the wood,” Branch said. “When I get my chance, I will.”

Branch said he counts on being part of the solution to shoring up the run defense, and believes coordinator John Marshall’s attention to detail will help in that regard.

“We’re going to be a lot more disciplined in what we do,” Branch said. “that’s one thing he harps on is being in the right spot at the right times. He’s a stickler on that stuff. He counts mental errors every day after practice.”

– Marcel Reece, who made the biggest offensive play by catching a pass in the seam from Garcia, later caught a swing pass and threw an elbow into the face mask of cornerback Justin Miller.

– The OTA format is not conducive to gathering interview material. Locker rooms are closed and players can be approached coming off the practice field. Once they get in the locker room, they’re off limits, and the whole availability period lasts about 10 minutes until Cable addressed the media. By the time he’s done, it’s all over.

    RaiderRockstar,

After bearing witness to Schroeder, Beurlein, Evans, Wade Wilson, George, Mirer, Collins, Brooks, McCown, Culpepper….and Hostetler and Gannon were only good for a couple of years….I’ve about had it with veteran QBs as the answer…even partially…

I would rather go 4-12 with a young guy…than waste a season at 7-9 with some vet that will be retired in a year or two and then be forced to start over.

That’s my point on Garcia…regardless of the Russell question…these washed up vets can’t get it done anymore. Teams don’t get rid of good QBs. Occassionally you get a Kurt Warner..but most times you end up with a Damon Huard or Jon Kitna

Any team that won with a journey-man QB had a superior Defense. We are near last in the league at stopping the run year-in and year-out. Jamarcus has to be great, not good, for us to win and go to the playoffs.

That’s because those teams were so complete in so many ways and had a limited window to take advantage of the talent on the roster…read the current Vikings….and had to try to strike while the iron was hot.

The Raiders are not nearly complete of a team…Its a youngish team. A team that needs the QB to mature along with them so that they can make multiple playoff/S.B appearances over a 10 year span. That’s the secret.

The Colts won a S.B…but that was the result of several playoff runs…the Pats have made several playoff/SB runs…Steelers same thing. Even the Eagles, although they haven’t closed the deal, have been to FIVE NFC Championship games in the last 8 or 9 years.

You look at teams like the Bears, Ravens, Bucs and soon to be Cardinals…those teams are one and done. They couldn’t make several appearances…It was one shot and done because ultimately their quarterbacks couldn’t keep up or retired.

Playing Garcia would be a waste of time outside of an injury. He’s 40 and done in a year and even if he’s hot his physical decline will be precipitous and he will be out of the league. Personally, they would have been well-off going after a Rex Grossman or J.P Losman as a backup…that way, if those players were pressed into action and performed well…they would still have 8 to 10 years of good football left….

complete waste of time, russell’s only in his “second season as a starter” , i agree with the notion of a great qb not only taking u to a ring but making u a competitive franchise for years to come

    SnB,

I don’t want Garcia one bit. The point we agree on is that we are not a complete team, or at least not yet. Russell is going to have to play like he did the last few weeks if we are going to be competitive week in and week out, because the D may improve, but will still be below average.

The teams that make perennial playoff runs of late: Colts, Pats, Ravens, Steelers and Eagles, either have a great QB or a great D (or both). Jamarcus is going to have play great for us to go 9-7, unless we both are missing something about the defense.

  • RaiderRockstar

SnB Defense : I understand your point in post #401, but just because Garcia is a back up who thinks he’s talented enough to be a starter doesn’t mean he’s a below average QB, a terrible QB, Josh McCown or DMC would be better off taking snaps from the QB position!

I bet you even Danny Southwick thinks he’s talented enough to be a starter in the NFL. If he was #2 on the depth chart and the media cared to interview him, he would happily tell them as much. it’s called confidence, not controversy. Garcia has had success in the NFL. Should he hang his head and tell the media that he’s a no talent scrub that’s lucky to latch on to an NFL team close to home? you guys are reading WAY too much into this. I’m just glad to have a back up plan in case Russell gets injured or does a face plant

you guys would rather have Tui back?

these guys are labeled 1st rounds busts. The last thing you want around your 1st round pick franchise QB is a guy who was a 1st round pick franchise QB himself that turned out to be a bust. These guys might have bigger arms than Garcia, but not near the experience or football IQ

    RaiderRockstar,

The general argument being proposed is that Garcia could beat out Russell and, as a result, help Oakland win games this year.

I just don’t believe he’s good enough to carry a team a full season. He’s a backup QB and has been for a long time. My point is that if this guy couldn’t win in Tampa, Detroit, Cleveland…and San Fran was quick to dispatch him…its a reach to suggest he’s going to do anything in Oakland more than 6-10 / 7-9.

I think he’s no better than Josh McCown. I am being serious when I say that…Josh is a backup QB. Now of course Garcia should feel confident in his own abilities. But people thinking he’s another Kurt Warner type are overrating his past performance.

Decent backup? Maybe…but so was Daunte Culpepper coming in. So was Aaron Brooks and KFC coming in. There was hype and hope because they were new. But looking at the record says something else to me…I guess I just have a big discount on vet QBs that didn’t have other teams competing for their services that end up in Oakland.

Ultimately, the Raiders best chance to win is with Russell…not only this year but for the long-term.

Jeff Garcia couldn’t beat the 4 -11 Raiders at home to get into the playoffs last year.

  • RaiderRockstar

S&B: Garcia did have success in San Fran, Philly and Tampa. who has McCown had success with? Has JM led his team to the playoffs? how many pro bowls has he been to? this is a terrible comparison. I think highly of you as a poster, but this time you’re just flat out wrong. I think it’s because idiots like norco bob and MR come in here and try to ruffle feathers by saying Garcia is our only shot at winning games this year.

Gannon was injured when he retired. Collins became a starter in TN. Culpepper became a starter in Detroit. McCown is 3rd string in Carolina. Tui was 3rd string for the Jets. Aaron Brooks is out of the league. NO – oakland hasn’t had the best of luck winning with vet QB’s besides Gannon, but don’t throw Garcia in the same pile as other cast offs when #1 he’s a back up and #2 he’s had more success than those other clowns

I think the Steelers are at the white house right now. In a couple years when we win the bowl, what do you think Russell will sport. White mink? Jeans and a white tee with a million in ice?

  • ottocrat

Enough with all of the Vick/Raiders talk. I know it’s a hot subject, but that’s kinda playing into the media’s hands. A bunch of columnists think it’s a given that Vick will end up with the Raiders, because that’s what the Raiders do. Well, they aint doin’ it this year. No Plaxico, no Pac-man, No Tank, and there isn’t going to be a Vick either. The one thing that leads me to believe that Cable might have some autonomy is the fact that he is trying to get quality people in here. And Vick doesn’t fit the bill.

  • RaiderRockstar

Tampa didn’t cut Jeff Garcia. his contract was up. He signed a 2 year deal.

Wanna know why they didn’t resign him? they are rebuilding. you don’t rebuild with a 40 year old QB. also notice they let other older vets like Joey Galloway, Warrick Dunn and Derrick Brooks go who were productive there. Monte Kiffin, Jon Gruden, Bruce Allen = all gone. new OC and QB coach, etc.

they drafted Josh Freeman for pete’s sake. who would draft him if they wanted to win now?

Regarding the JR pics I didnt care about the chain, the cigar or even that he was drunk. The same can be said about many NFL players. I was commenting on that HUGE gut. Dude literally lookes 8 months preagnant.

The poster said it was from March. He is full of crap. That the exact same outfit (with the unlit cigar) that Poole described at the boxing match last week. You can even look at the room and tell that that is from the Oracle, in the VIP area downstairs.

Im sending them to ESPN and CBS Sportsline. Dude needs to be called out. Just for the record, I like Russ. He is extremly talented. I think that is his downside as well. Dude is so talented that he thinks that he can simply rely on that and NOT put in the work (ala Vick). Maybe some embarasement will light a fire under him.
