Davis aboard; the Russell pictures
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, May 21st, 2009 at 3:55 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders have signed veteran safety Keith Davis, according to the transactions page on Raiders.com
Davis, 30, is primarily a special teams player who started 15 games for Dallas in 2005. In 84 career games, Davis has no interceptions and six passes defensed. Davis had nine starts for Dallas last season.
The JaMarcus party shots
Received a few e-mails ofphotos of JaMarcus Russell holding drinks and posing with friends, originally posted on “partychaser.com” and chances are they’ll continue to be circulated in the coming days, although I won’t post a link to them here.
A few things worth mentioning:
– Who of us hasn’t posed with a drink at a party with friends? If photos of my best friends’s 50th birthday party ever get out . . .
– There is no way to tell how hard Russell was partying or how much he was drinking from a few photos.
– Just think if John Matuszak and Co. had lived in the age of digital photography and cell phones . . .
– All that aside, Russell has to realize that if he poses for a photo that is a less than flattering portrayal, it will be everywhere in the blink of an eye. Just ask Michael Phelps, Matt Leinart and Eli Manning, just to name a few.
– If Russell continues to struggle with his passing, the photos will be used as evidence for his lack of personal discipline even if the two things aren’t related.
If Russell doesn’t know better yet, he should now. And if he still doesn’t get it, someone in a position of authority on the Raiders ought to sit him down and tell him about the pitfalls of celebrity.

Wow…I didn’t know Keith Davis was a free agent. He was starting for the Cowboys at SS at the end of the season and the Cowboys have nobody to replace him that I know of. My brother is going to be pissed.

2008 Scouting Report – Scouts Inc.
Grade: 59 | Key
Alert: None
Comment: Davis is a solid athlete with decent size who has been relegated to a backup position for the Cowboys. He has good foot agility, quickness and speed for the safety position, but can be inconsistent in coverage. He may be a liability in pure man coverage, but is best in off-zone schemes. He is inconsistent reading route progressions in coverage and rarely gets his hands on the ball. He is a solid tackler in run support and keeps good leverage when filling the alley.
Davis uses his hands well to work through trash and stay alive to make plays. He does have some limitations, but used in the right schemes he can be effective. He is a good football player and has been a solid special team’s contributor, which gives valuable depth to the Cowboys secondary.

Jerry makes this point on his blog all the time, and I think it’s a good one; your back-up QB should have slightly different skills than your starter, rather than just a lesser talented version of him. When and if Garcia comes into a game, we would probably resemble a WCO team more than a vertical one.
—————————–
I don’t understand that logic. You have a strong-armed starter, with the complimentary WR’s and system. You practice that all Camp, Pre-Season, every week in the season.
That strong-armed QB goes down, You bring in a weak armed WCO QB, and you have to do something new? How the hell is that beneficial?

It’s not that he’s partying, Jerry. It’s that he’s a fatass. He got the wrong surgery in the off-season. Instead of getting his knee scoped, he should have had lypo-suction.

Hopefully Jruss will play like he did at the end of the year of course who can blame any qb early in the season with that o-line and at one point our wr lelie, curry and fargas, starting now jruss has chaz, dhb, jlh, murphy, dmac, bush so he has the weapons its up to him now.

What Jamarcus Russell said of Michael Vick…
It was a good time for him as far as sitting down and his body healing,” he said of Vick’s prison time.
(Yeah Jamarcus. That was the idea. Nothin like dog fighting to get you into a restful place so you can just take a nice 2 year break away from the game.)

Cable also gave his most detailed answer as to why he hired defensive coordinator John Marshall to replace outgoing Rob Ryan.
It turns out to be a lot more do with his experience than any notion he would revamp the style of defense preferred by Al Davis.
“John was similiar enough to the style of play and the package that we had here before but John’s been a part of building teams from the ground up and he’s been a part of Super Bowl champions, he’s coached in that game, so he’s been there and developed what we’re trying to do here in Oakland. I felt like I needed that piece to go through this journey. I needed people that have done what I’m trying to accomplish, and that is to build it and build it so it can last and not just be a one-hit wonder and then ultimately, when we get to the playoffs, you get to the Super Bowl, someone who’s been in that game and coached it and what it’s like for those of us who haven’t done it yet. I think his role is very important.”
Asked about the increase in blitz packages during practice, Cable indicated this was not a shift in philosophy as much as a tool to help the offense.
“I like what he’s bringing to the defense … the pressure. One of the things I wanted to do, probably more for the offense and more for the quarterback position, was to get us under duress right away. We started it in minicamp and we’ll continue it all throughout OTA because I don’t think we did a very good job the last couple of years of handling the blitz pressure and really understanding where I’ve got to go with the football and what I need to check through, if I need a different protection, so I want to start that right from the beginning. We’ve done a nice job of that and the defense has heated it up pretty good and offensively we seem to be getting a little better at it every day so we’re improving that way.”
At least a few players would be surprised if all these blitzes stick around in the regular season. As Thomas Howard recently said, Ryan blitzed a lot in the spring but for whatever reasons did not do it much in the real games.
If Ryan goes blitz-crazy in Cleveland, we’ll know who was the reason behind the tone-down playbook here all these years.

Pretty much did Jerry, I guess the actual link though would matter right? Not that this matters, but we do live in an era where there is always a camera when you go out in public. If you don’t want the pics taken, dont do the act.
May 21st, 2009 at 5:03 pm
It drives me insane that our coaches can actually tell us that our defense blitzes in practice to put our offense under duress and in pressure situations with a straight face. Knowing that…wouldn’t you want your defense to do the same thing to the other teams offense on game day? Our team wants to literally prepare our offense for pressure because it actually works but they don’t want to apply that to themselves. It makes absolutely no sense at all. We don’t need to be the Eagles and blitz on 80% of our plays but for crying out loud, have some b@lls and confuse the offense by mixing it up with a 50% ratio at least.

QB Comparison
MARK SANCHEZ HAS A ROUGH DAY
Posted by Aaron Wilson on May 21, 2009, 5:24 p.m.
New York Jets rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez struggled markedly during an Organized Team Activity session today, completing just one of nine passes with one interception during full-team drills, according to Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger.
Per the report, Sanchez repeatedly drew criticism from offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer for missing open targets and not reacting well to blitzes. The miscues haven’t discouraged Sanchez, though.
“It was a good day .. for the defense,” Sanchez said. “They got after it. It was good, though. For a rookie to play against a defense like this, you can’t ask for anything better.
“They’re smart. They’re fast. They know exactly what they’re doing and they know I’m not quite up to speed yet. It was a tough day, but that’s what these days are all about. I learned a lot.”
Added Jets coach Rex Ryan: “We’re kind of throwing him to the wolves.”
And inside linebacker Bart Scott delivered a few barbs: “You still have the training wheels on, Sanchez. … You’re gonna get somebody killed, Sanchez.”
Meanwhile, veteran quarterback Kellen Clemens completed 5 of 13 throws, a percentage affected by several drops.
Plus, Sanchez has been getting teased for his recent GQ Magazine pictorial and his photos are pinned up all over the locker room.
“They called me David Hasselhoff,” Sanchez said. “… The first thing I would say is that it was two months ago. It was one of those things where you’re about to get drafted and you’re going to do a shoot with a supermodel, are you kidding me?
“That’s one of those you have to do. And the guys even told me that I earned it. The Jets know, or they wouldn’t have drafted me, that I’m all about football.”

I will forever compare JR to BQ…
It’s extremely early in the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback competition, but former Notre Dame star Brady Quinn appears to be emerging as the initial leader during a voluntary minicamp.
According to James Walker of ESPN.com, Quinn took the first snaps with the first-team offense today ahead of former Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Anderson.
And Browns coach Eric Mangini indicated that Quinn’s offseason efforts contributed toward his early advantage in the quarterback derby.
“Brady will get the first reps today,” Mangini said. “He started with the first reps on Wednesday, and that’s because he’s done a really outstanding job in the offseason program. Not that Derek hasn’t done well, but [Quinn] gets the first reps.”

Garcia will be the starter by week four you wait and see nation! !!!!WOW!!!!
May 21st, 2009 at 6:01 pm
Wow,
So I don’t know why people are hyping this team, when we have no quarterback!! It’s inconceivable how bad Russell is…he’s had 2 seasons (ok maybe one full one, but he should have been practicing his ass off the first season anyway) and he still looks like trash.
The problem is, he just doesnt care enough, and he is really dumb; plain and simple. He won’t ever be a good quarterback in my opinion there’s just not a spark there, and any loyal raider fan would know this. You knew Jim Plunkett would be amazing just by the way he looked out there. Russell is fat, dumb, and has no heart. Why do you think he held out on the money for so long…because he knew he would be trash and wanted some sort of insurance for when he would be let go.
AL >>>> CUT HIM!!! he is only going to hurt us, and our true star (RUN DMC) is going to get aged. Dmac is going to get banged up because jamarcus is goin to throw him a crappy pass and he’s going to get knocked out on his blind side. That’s another thing with rusell is that he never looks out for his recievers…don’t throw to a receiver when they are crossing the middle and you see the strong safety waiting to paralyze him! Anyway, our only real future is through mcfadden, and if russell stays in oakland, then not only are we gonna keep having losing seasons but McFadden is going to get weathered out and never be allowed to reach his full potential. Look at LT, he’s on the decline because his prime is over. I wanna see our RB shine, but that must come with the cost of cutting #2.
PLEASE JAMARCUS, get a season ending injury in the first game so the coaches can see how much you’ve been single handedly holding this team back
Raider Fans, you know this is all true.
I’m starting the BOOT JMAC CAMPAIGN…
BOO THIS MAN!!!!!

Some of you are pathetic. A guy drinks and gets hammered, other then RaiderO for religious reasons, who doesn’t? Some of you should be BSPN shills for the prosecution against all things Raider. If JRuss shows up tanked and bloated on a gameday in October then you may have a reason to complain. Let it all be dealt with inhouse if there something unrighteous going on, ’cause the “holier than thou” crud in here is sometimes too much.
And. If that was truly Mistabrown giving an analogy with icecubes in a glass as per the melting of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, it was probably the most ill-informed analogy of all time. Ice cubes already in a glass, ice sheet not already in the ocean. Wishful New Math?
May 21st, 2009 at 6:15 pm
Well I’m not certainly quitting on Russell and neither should any other Raiders fans. Hes young and he looks like an offensive lineman but hes a big guy so thats not uncommon. Hes a different kind of speciman and its his body build and size that allows him to throw as far as he is supposed to. All that really matters is what he does on Sunday’s. Thats when everything counts. Theres no proof that hes dumb or anything like that and we shouldn’t judge him on anything but his QB play. Hes a guy thats going into his 2nd full year of starting, he will make mistakes.
I’d rather have JR than Billy Joe Hobert or Donald Hollas or Vince Evans so lets take a wait and see approach. Its one thing to poke fun because something is funny, its another to be downright mean. If we want JR to be successful, his fans need to support him as well.

24,
I know you’re 27 or so and have suffered through multiple poor seasons. I appreciate your fandom. And I also appreciate that you have the willingness to forgo the retreadism with patience enough to develop a potentially great QB. Good on yer.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:26 pm
M Lonetree – If theres anything I ever wanted as a fan, it was a young QB for the future. Well we have him. He wasn’t my 1st choice but we have one so I will give him some time to develop in a league that is extremely difficult. I poke fun at JR sometimes because I’m bored and there isn’t much Raider stuff going on. With all seriousness, I originally labeled him as a bust but I’m not going to define him by what he does at a party or how he looks in a white shirt (mind you everybody looks heavier in white). The team has given him options on offense and our defense is improved with Marshall.
I don’t want Garcia starting at anytime unless JR is hurt. Garcia had his time. JR needs to develop all year long and given at least next year to continue. Period.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:29 pm
Every young player needs 3 years. If they can’t do anything in that time, then you need to look elsewhere. In that 3 year period, a player needs to show progression. They don’t need to be a Pro Bowler or put up incredible stats, they just need to improve enough each year to merit consideration for another start the very next season. JR will have his 2nd starting season. McFadden will start his 2nd season but he was hurt most of his 1st. DHB will start his 1st season. Miller will start his 3rd season. We hopefully have 10 more years of progression from all of these guys.

Careful, you are making too much sense. It is a refreshing alternative to the “Chicken Little” attitude with this kid after a couple of pictures.
Give the guy a fighting chance before throwing the man under the bus. It’s sad to see so many people in the media, and in the Raider Nation for that matter, almost rooting for this kid to fail.
As far as his weight goes, I am ok with it as long as he uses that size to his advantage and stops going down so quickly.

OK here’s the deal. I’m a huge fan of JaMarcus and have close ties to a cat who went to school with JaMarcus’ moms. My guy has been to a few family functions in Mobile and also gets reports from others (probably some of those cats in the photos with him) about how JaMarcus parties. His words were that JaMarcus parties real hard. One that went down right after the season had him at one with a bottle of grey goose in each hand. Some of that Marice Clarett stuff. But hey, Al said the Snake was a drinker too.

Throw in the fact that he is a Raider and you’ve got yourself quite a target indeed.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:38 pm
He is only 24 and with all that money he probably will not start producing for another couple of years which may mean it is not with the Raiders.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:38 pm
About Keith Davis,
Dude is a good Safety. He would’ve started for us last year. He’s got some baggage though. A few years ago the Saints signed him to offer sheet in Payton’s first year because Payton knew him from Dallas practices/games giving QB’s fits. Dallas ended up matching the offer and keeping him.
Then Davis got shot in a car chase in which he was the target. He missed some games but played again. He was also shot at again (baggage) but not hit. A very good footbal player but lately seems to be ducking the homies for some reason. He is a hitter and can cover. Just keep him off the streets of Oakland and don’t let him hang out with Stephen Jackson of the Warriors.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:39 pm
But, on the other hand Raiderdogg, I had an old HOF Oakland Ganster (family friend) over here a hour ago, and showed him the Russell Pixs. He was already down on Russell, those pix sealed it for him.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:43 pm
If I was a single man with all that money…I would have probably forgotten that I had to be back in Oakland for OTA’s as I would be in Europe, Australia, Mars and in the Starship Enterprise. I’d be partying, living the good life in every great city, waking up to a different sunrise every morning with a different girl, you name it. What JR is doing is minor compared to what I would do so hey…it is what it is.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:44 pm
RaiderDogg,
wish I can joke about it too but just stating the facts from an inside person. I’m not too worried about him because he constantly weighed 275+ every off-season at LSU and got himself back together by the start of the season. The difference is (stole this from Cable and tweaked it) “The Goon coming off that corner in the NFL is not the same Goon in the NCAA.”
May 21st, 2009 at 6:46 pm
I’d say the only thing I didn’t like about the pictures was the Russell chain around his neck. Thats tooting your own horn in my opinion. Maybe people wouldn’t have known who he was without the chain and thats why he wore it? He might as well have walked in with his own game jersey on.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:49 pm
But the fact of the matter is this:
13 TD’s
8 ints
2423 yds
77 passer rating.
All BS aside, not too shabby considering his environment last year. Really, not too shabby in any environment for a Rookie QB.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:49 pm
The Cowboys have placed Greg Ellis on the trading block. He was originally a DE converted to LB in the 3-4 the Cowboys use. Hes a whiner but hes a solid DE that could be useful in our 4-3 as a DE. I say trade Burgess for Ellis straight up.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:50 pm
We got more OTAs and training camp to deal with where JaMarcus is in terms of progress. If he’s not where he needs to be then I’m good with Garcia filling in until further notice. And if Garcia is still pitching ground balls, then Mike Vick will always be a Cable/Davis option. And with Vick, Kwame Harris could still be the LT for all he cares.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:52 pm
KoolKell – I Agree.
JR had to deal with the Kiffin/Davis feud and have a new Head Coach after week 4. His offensive line was suspect, play calling suspect by our OC, McFadden was a hurt rookie, Walker was always hurt, Lelie was new, Curry dropped everything, JLH giveth and taketh, Schilens was a rookie, Fargas is one dimensional and Miller had to help block while Rob Ryan’s defense couldn’t hold down the fort. Yeah…JR’s stats were pretty good considering.

We should keep Burgess if the Pats don’t give us a #2. I would play him and let him get his double digit sacks then franchise his azz after the season. Then work out a deal with a team. That should get us a #2 or better.

2008 Scouting Report – Scouts Inc.
Grade: 75 | Key
Alert: None
Comment: Ellis is 10-year veteran with very good size and adequate speed and quickness. He reacts quickly to the run. He has good size and strength to maintain effective hand use. He has long arms to stack and shed. He will get upright with his pad level, but has good strength and balance to keep his feet. He’s a former defensive end who understands leverage. He can play physical and get off blocks with good timing. He is still quick enough to work his feet and re-gain outside leverage.
He is also quick enough to contain and force running backs back inside. He has adequate acceleration in space with good effort to pursue from behind. As a pass rusher, the Cowboys will bring him off the edge from a three-point stance where he has good success recording sacks when his hand is on the ground. He has strength in his upper body to re-work his hands inside then react off of the offensive tackle’s technique. He’s physical with his hands and works to finish. He is also strong with the ability to rip inside-out.
He has a variety of pass-rush moves including spins and counters. He does a good job turning speed to power. He will get upright on counter moves, but comes hard inside and has strength into traffic. He has some limitations in coverage due to his lack of burst in space. He will stall changing direction and lack the quickness to break down consistently, when isolated.
May 21st, 2009 at 6:55 pm
I would give Burgess away for a 3rd round…we’d be lucky to even get that.

Derrick Burgess
2008 Scouting Report – Scouts Inc.
Grade: 75 | Key
Alert: None
Comment: Since coming to the Raiders, Burgess has become one of the more consistent pass-rushers in the AFC. He is an undersized defensive end with excellent athleticism. He has great initial quickness off the line of scrimmage to gain leverage on blockers. He is an explosive player who can close well in space. Burgess shows good range to chase down ball carriers from the backside as well as downfield. He uses his hands well to separate from blockers versus the run as well as using a variety of pass-rush moves.
He has deceptive power to anchor versus power zone-blocking schemes, but is more of a finesse player when defending the run. He is an instinctive player who has a knack of getting opponents off balance with a variety of speed rushes and counter moves. He plays with an outstanding motor and is effective because he out-hustles his opponent. Burgess has had some durability concerns in the past, but has only missed two games in the past three seasons.

All BS aside, Russell’s passer rating over the last 6 games of the season was 92.5
So the fact that so many Raider fans are down on him is curious. Of course I know why, and so do you.

Sometime’s when a person’s mind is already made up, their bias influences their judgement.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I happen to agree with you and 24. Russell showed signs of improvement those last few games and, considering all that he had been through up to that point, it was almost a small miracle. Some young kids would have folded and faded in their confidence, given the exact same situation. Alex Smith comes to mind.

Finally someone with some sense. Snake Stabler said DMAC should touch the ball 30-35 times a game. He was a starter in the SEC. Felix Jones got carries because he was so talented but DMAC could’ve run 30 carries a game.

So, Davis/Kiffin blowup, New Coach Cable comes in, 2 different play-callers to start the season. No WR’s to speak of.
Yet he the last 7 (SEVEN) games of the season he pitches a 91.9 passer rating??????
Folks a 91 passer rating is damned good. If Walter had produced such a rating, Da Nation would be deifying him by now.

John Elway said as a QB you get paid to play on 3rd down and the 4th quarter. Let the kid party in the offseason, hes gonna be fine. His stats are very good for 1 year starting. Peyton Manning threw like 25 INTs his rookie year. Aikman won 1 game. Elway sucked. Get some perspective people, hes only 24. Let the kid grow.

One thing that has been a constant with Russell is that he is mentally tough. He is also very confident in his abilities in a quiet way. We will be fine with him.
The one thing I think he really needs to work on was already praised by Cable the other day, Footwork. JaMarcus is as mobile as Tom Brady. If our line protect him like Brady’s do, then we in business.
May 21st, 2009 at 7:27 pm
Also 8 ints is low for any QB, let alone a Rookie in those circumstances.
May 21st, 2009 at 7:35 pm
79. Kool Kell
Very good point, the fact that he had more TD’s than INT’s with our crappy O-Line, suspect recievers, and all the BS with the coaching changes and the playcaller changes, indicates that he knows the QB’s job is put his team in a position to win, not to lose the game for us. I have faith in JRuss, (and I too wanted BQ) and we may be playoff bound this year, just have some faith people.
May 21st, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Yeah, I think we’ll be fine too. I got a little nervous seeing those pix, but, he’d have to regress quite a bit for our QB play to be a problem.

Jamarcus Russell’s QB Rating Per game.
Week 1 – Denver – 111.1 – Excellent
Week 2 – Kansas City – 45.0 – Poor
Week 3 – Buffalo – 93.3 – Great
Week 4 – San Diego – 80.6 – Good
Week 5 – Bye
Week 6 – New Orleans – 40.1 – Poor
Week 7 – New York – 88.6 – Good
Week 8 – Baltimore – 66.2 – Poor
Week 9 – Atlanta – 19.0 – Terrible
Week 10 – Did Not Play – Adjustments
Week 11 – Miami – 88.4 – Good
Week 12 – Denver – 149.1 – Great
Week 13 – Kansas City – 51.5 – Poor
Week 14 – San Diego – 42.0 – Poor
Week 15 – New England – 85.7 – Good
Week 16 – Houston – 128.1 – Excellent
Week 17 – Tampa Bay – 98.9 – Great
These stats show a rookie at work. This guy was like a wave as he would go up and then back down again. He constantly rebounded from a poor performance which shows character. This is completely typical of a rookie trying to find his way. He struggled against the Chiefs during both games but we should expect him to improve with a new regime there and he’ll have more study film on them more often. New Orleans was just a bad game. Baltimore has a great defense. Atlanta had his number. The Chargers had film on him from the 1st game and took advantage.
Other then that…JR did pretty good against some very good competition.

KK, Black Death 29, Dogg, 24, 504 Raider…and all
So we have pics of Jamrcus posing with associates and drinks…BFD
22yrs old, and on top of the financial world, compared to most of us.
The Young Man is flexing a bit of His muscle.
Let’s all say together…EGO
I’m damn glad He’s got one. I hope It’s Huge.
I love them cocky egotistical athletes that kick ass.
My personal opinion is that Jamarcus is willing to work hard and learn.
I believe He also posses’ a humility that enables Him to listen to the advice…(coaching) of those whom He respects.
If some in The Nation are looking for a choir boy, milk drinking monk, then I guess they’ll have to look elsewhere for a QB.
Jamarcus is our future and I’m feeling very good about that.
May 21st, 2009 at 7:47 pm
Also…JR seems to own Denver but they have a new regime. Kansas City owned JR both games but they also have a new regime. The Chargers owned JR 1 out of 2 so I’d say JR is 50/50 on division games at this point and thats alot better than 0-6 in our division so he should progress even more with the continuity of this team and the changes of the other teams.

I like the idea of us being able to run the ball effectively.
Pound it, Pound it, Pound It.
I don’t mean in the sense of the 3 yards and a cloud of dust sense.
I mean, stretch the defense out on the edges because of our speed, and let our guys either cut back into the gap, or take the edge if it’s there.
Once the D coordinator is trying to figure out how to stop us from killing Him in the run game, we go up top, over the middle and to the sidelines.
If Jamarcus has time to throw, we are gonna kill on the Offense.
I can’t wait.

The only thing that matters is if Russell passes the conditioning tests that all players have to pass prior to camp. Other than that test, there are three people whose opinion matters on this…in order of importance:
Tom Cable
Brad Roll
JaMarcus Russell
I can rest assure you all that the coaches develop an individual conditioning plan for all players so that they can be at their best for season
Jerry. CAN YOU PLEASE ASK CABLE ABOUT RUSSELL’S CONDITIONING SO THAT THESE HATERS CAN BE SILENCED? It’s disturbing that NFL fans are becoming like gossipy teenagers hunting for paparazzi photos and making comments on a man’s figure, friends etc…..

Coaching is going pretty good
The little league team is 14-2 with two games to go, but the traveling team is only 14-16 with 4 games to go
which isn’t too bad when you consider this is a first year team and all the other teams have been together for at least 3 years. Although I never judge a season (at this age) by wins and losses. My goal is to make sure these little guys learn the fundamentals so that they can compete t the next level

Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf has been indicted by a Randall County grand jury on drug and burglary charges.
The indictment handed up Wednesday in Canyon charged the 33-year-old former San Diego Chargers quarterback and former West Texas A&M quarterbacks coach with one count of burglary to a habitation, seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance.
—————-
Leaf is even more stoopid than I thought! I went to West Texas State Uni. before A & M took over. Randall county is a DRY COUNTY!!!! THEY DON’T LET YOU DRINK, WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THEY TOLLERATE DRUGS????!!
But then, if you’ve ever had to live in Canyon Texas, you realise you HAVE to do drugs to stand the place!
Canyon Texas is known for 3 things:
Wrestler Terry Funk
Artist Georgia O’Keefe
the 2nd largest canyon in America,
Palo Duro Canyon.
This is where to drive when you want to smoke p*t between classes at WTSU.
When someone says “Have you done dr*gs?” I have to answer “I went to college during the 70s, whatta you think???”
Like South Park says “There is a time and place for everything! And that place is called college!!!”

Raiders add strong safety
The Raiders signed veteran strong safety Keith Davis, who took over for an injured Roy Williams last season.
Davis, a special teams regular, considered joining the Raiders last year before picking the Dolphins. He was then cut and re-signed with Dallas.
According to Scouts Inc., his lack of speed makes him a liability in man coverage. That could be a problem if he sticks in Oakland, which lives in man coverage.
His strength is in run support, which is where the Raiders would want him to contribute.

OTA Q&A with JaMarcus Russell
May 21, 2009
The Oakland Raiders hit the field at their Alameda, Calif., facility this week as the Organized Team Activity phase of the off-season program got underway. Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell took time out to speak to the media following Wednesday morning’s OTA.
Q: How’s it going out there today?
Russell: Pretty good. You got young guys coming in and working. You can tell those guys are getting better and familiar with what we do. On both sides of the ball you can tell guys are coming in to work.
Q: How would you describe the relationship between you and Jeff (Garcia) out there?
Russell: It’s like any other relationship on the team. We’re obviously competing for a job but at the same time we are on the same team. Not too much I can say about it right now.
Q: How does the competition help you get better at your job?
Russell: Knowing that we’re both getting at each other, helping one another be better as a quarterback and person.
Q: Jeff has a lot of experience under his belt, has he taught you any of that?
Russell: You can just tell by the things he does on the field. I haven’t been around him too much off the field, but when a guy has been in the league that long I’m pretty sure he’s been through plenty of coaches and plenty of games on the field that you can pull away something.
Q: Do you get the sense that he really wants to push you?
Russell: As a quarterback and competitive guy you always want to do that. Being a back up he’s going to be giving good advice. His eyes off the field while I’m on the field, will be seeing things I can’t see. That’s what you look for from a guy that’s behind you and will help you do what you do. If I get nicked I’ll be his eyes off the field to see what’s going on.
Q: Are you guys’ simplifying the offense?
Russell: Those guys came in [Paul Hackett and Ted Tollner] and put their touch on it. Some things are the same, like I said they came in and gave it a touch…working each and every day to get it down pat for the new guys.
Q: Is it easier for you to grasp?
Russell: It’s similar to what it was before, just different terminology.
May 22nd, 2009 at 7:04 am
that’s all I got so far this morning, Hwnrdr …
May 22nd, 2009 at 7:09 am

It made me sick to read of Chubbustus’ sunny endorsement of ex-con Michael Vick…
( …Not only does Chubbustus still appear to lack commitment comesurate with paycheck and his elite peers , but also sensitivity to the correct public outrage against both dog fighting and the sadistic execution of many of these dogs, of which Vick was an active participant…
It’s a disgrace to the N.F.L. that this deeply disturbed individual wasn’t expelled for his henious crimes…
Open question…
If Vick’s crimes weren’t severe enough to warrant expulsion, just how low do we indeed lower the bar on such behavior ?…
What’s next ?, homo-pedio-bestial- necro-cannibalism-(..whatever…)…
“…Hey,Mike Vick…What’s up with the dead male puppies in the fridge ?”…

Never mind…I see on raidernews.com I was right about the team website.
May 22nd, 2009 at 7:27 am
Russell said in his interview that there’s a competition, but followed by saying that Garcia will be his back up unless he gets injured.
doesn’t sound like Garcia wants to help Russell. doesn’t sound like Russell wants his advice either. they aren’t spending any time together. relationship is like any other on the team. in other words, Russell spends the same amount of time with Garcia as Sands. “i’m sure i’ll pull away something” haha
doesn’t sound like he really cares about Jeff Garcia. he doesn’t feel pressured and he’s not going to be mentored by a vet.
is this the right approach for a young QB to take?

The Raiders should take advantage of Russell’s upper body “strength” and use him as an extra blocker in the wild-cat formation. Why send his fat ass out wide? Use him like an extra tackle on the field. He outweighs guys like Glen Dorsey…might as well throw that gut around at siomeone Russell.

At least Russell isn’t Ryan Leaf….yet.
______________________________________
CANYON, Texas (AP) – Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf has been indicted by a Randall County grand jury on drug and burglary charges.
The indictment said Leaf presented an incomplete medical history to several physicians between January 2008 and September 2008 to get or try to obtain the painkiller Hydrocodone.
It was not clear whether Leaf had an attorney.
Canyon police Lt. Dale Davis said Leaf is suspected of breaking into a Canyon apartment on Oct. 30 and stealing Hydrocodone, which had been prescribed to an injured football player.
“There were signs of a forced entry,” Davis said. “A window in the back of the home was (damaged).”
The count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance alleges Leaf gave an individual a substance he said was Hydrocodone but was not that drug.
James Farren, Randall County criminal district attorney, said Leaf has been undergoing drug rehabilitation in British Columbia, the Amarillo Globe-News reported.
Farren told the newspaper that efforts were under way to try to convince Leaf to return to the United States on his own.
“We have not found any evidence implicating anyone other than Mr. Leaf in this case … but believe there’s additional evidence implicating him in other events,” Farren said. He would not elaborate.
Leaf, a Great Falls, Mont., native, led Washington State to the Pacific-10 Conference championship and Rose Bowl appearance. The Chargers made him the second pick of the 1998 NFL draft. He played for the Chargers from 1998-2000 and also played for the Dallas Cowboys in 2001. He threw for 3,666 yards and 14 touchdowns in his career.

May 22nd, 2009 at 7:42 am
From the Dallas News:
It was pretty clear the Cowboys were looking elsewhere for safety and special teams’ help this off-season, and as a result Keith Davis has a new home in Oakland.
Davis, who led the Cowboys in special teams’ stops with 20 in 2008, signed with the Raiders on Thursday. He had visited Kansas City earlier this off-season.
Davis was the heart of the special teams’ unit and was one of the Cowboys’ best leaders. He was unafraid to voice his feelings. He played hard. He played hurt. He played tough.
The Cowboys will miss Davis this year for what he brings to the locker room. It said a lot about how his teammates felt about him when he was named captain last year despite being on the roster only a few days after his release by Miami.
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
I like the character angle! He might be worth three more wins now!

I was thinking of Jeff Otis last night while musing on a good name for a Great Dane. I’ve been hounding the wife (no pun intended) to let me get another dog, and it looks like this Father’s Day may be the time. Otis would have been a good name for a black/white male, but I think I’m gonna name him Otto. Then I’ll call him Jim LOL.

I heard a loud crash coming form your general direction last night at around 8:30 PST. Is everything still intact in the Dakota household?

I was actually at the movies and missed the game…so I didn’t break anything. Although I was driving home and heard the score and didn’t have any inclination of driving the car off the road towards a light pole or anything like that…I was very proud of my self control!
Now, back in January of 2003, driving home from a Super Bowl party in Omaha, traveling North on I-29, I certainly had to fight the urge to unbuckle my seat belt and smash into an overpass pillar at 120 miles per hour after the Raiders lost the SB.

If he is pregnant then I hope it’s a DT!!

Dakota,
perhaps that is the reason S.D. drivers are so good. self control in the face of the bleakest circumstances.
RaiderDogg,
you got your BBQ workin’ overtime this weekend?
May 22nd, 2009 at 10:06 am
Dakota
You missed the game?! That is unheard of.
I think all of us shared a similar moment after that SB. I lived in LA at the time and all of my neighbors went apesh1t. I thought someone was going to get killed. I didn’t live in the best area and most of my neighbors were very audibly pissed off.
May 22nd, 2009 at 10:11 am
M
Funny that you mentioned the BBQ. Last weekend while cleaning my grill with the usual ferver, I put too much pressure on the back end and broke the wheel and frame that housed it.
Long story short I sold the broken one, which was 6 years old, on Craigslist for $35, then went down to Home Depot and bought a brand new grill for $300.
Coincidentally it is Silver and Black in color and is definitely an upgrade from the old one. I have already used it twice in the 2 days that I have had it, with plans to use it tonight. The Father in law is coming over and I will be grilling some chops. Then the wife and I will be going out on a date!
No big party plans though, how about you?
May 22nd, 2009 at 10:12 am
You guys are going wild today. Wow!
Vitrol for a young QB who had an 80+ rating in 9 games in his first year as a starter.
Jeff had an 80+ rating in 7 of his games last year.
One QB has a full career in front of him…the other..2 yrs tops….
I would rather see Russell take all the snaps, I don’t care how many balls he throws in the ground. If Russell struggles…go with Gratkowski or Southwick…Garcia is a 1 and done QB.
And people wonder why some franchises just keep losing and losing
May 22nd, 2009 at 10:12 am
RaiderDogg,
your L.A. neighbors from back then could’ve hunted down Callahan and asked him why he didn’t change a single bit of the Gruden’s terminology as they went through the thousand paper cuts on “the dumbest coach in America”.
May 22nd, 2009 at 10:13 am
Dogg,
I can’t even watch the Lakers live anymore…I just DVR the games and watch them later (I tried once this postseason and I ended up breaking a coffee table). I get too pissed off and my blood pressure spikes every time Sasha and Fisher jack up threes and miss…unless I already know the outcome, and then I can watch all calm and cool like. I’m 33…time to start watching my heart health.
May 22nd, 2009 at 10:17 am
RaiderDogg,
sounds like the new grill was “planned”.

Good for you for knowing your limitations and taking the right precautions. I used to have the same problem with all of my teams. My teams pretty much have stunk for the last few years so I have had no choice but to learn how to ddeal with it without losing my sh1t. You’re lucky because it seems like the Lakers are a perrenial playoff team. What has happened to Fisher anyway? He can’t hit a 3 to save his life.

I think the majority of my neighbors were more focused on tracking down Barrett Robbins. I laughed out loud at the 1,000 paper cuts comment. Funny sh1t my friend.

I punched a window when ND lost to BC a week after beating Florida State back in 93 or 94.
I smashed an oscillating fan into a million pieces when the Cubs blew game 6 (Bartman Game).
I threw a jar of peanut butter through a wall when the Raiders lost a regular season game to the Broncos back in like, 1998 or 99.
I threw a Crown Royal bag full of coins through a wall after Tim Duncan threw up a prayer shot and it went in back in game five of the 2004 playoffs (and then Fisher hit the shot to win the game .04 game).
I threw a glass into a fireplace when the Raiders lost the snow job.
I kicked a hole in a bedroom door when Sharpe scored in the AFC championship game against the Raiders.
And this year, when the Lakers lost to Houston, I tore a leg off my old coffee table in my man cave and commenced beating it apart with its own leg (which reminds me, I have to take a trip to the city dump this weekend).
What can I say, I’m Irish and German.

Dakota, this is a repost from 3:56 this morning about Leaf:

Wow Dakota, that inventory of damage looks very familiar, just replace all the Cubs references with the failure of the A’s to advance past the ALDS for three years, (also mostly Irish). But my crowning achievment in mayhem was the complete dis-assembly of a backyard trampoline, while attending an after superbowl party at my former friend’s house, who was a Bucs fan. He never spoke to me again, well worth it.

a lot of people wanted us to keep Culpepper to mentor JR.it seems like JR learned a lot from him in the short time they were teammates.that being said,JR will be fine.i’d guess if most had the money he has at 22/23 years old,you wouldn’t be with us today.
May 22nd, 2009 at 11:26 am
I also broke off the rearview mirror of my father’s truck, after listening to ND lose to Michigan State on the car radio a few years back. We were like a minute away from the Mexico border when the game ended, so we drove past the border patrol with me still brandishing the mirror like a weapon. The agent didn’t even look at me twice, just waved us through.

Lefty12: so if somebody paid you 10 million per year to do your job, you wouldn’t do it?
you’d goof around and waste your money instead of earning that payday and working your butt off to set yourself up in the future?
I know personally that I’d be getting the coaches, receivers and fellow quarterbacks together every opportunity possible to learn this new system, develop a chemistry, build relationships and eliminate mistakes. how a person spends thier money and time shows where thier priorities lie …
if Russell didn’t want to work with any Raiders this offseason he should have given McNabb or McNair a call. This kid has that much potential and upside. Too bad his heart isn’t in it. how can a professional athlete NOT take care of his body? We drafted a black version of Jared Lorenzen

There is a ESPN article on the same issue.
Well, I will have to feet firmly planted in the Russell camp. I believe he will come out of this season as a solid starter for the Raiders for years to come.
He played okay to excellent (Rating over 80) in half of the games he started last year.

If you exclude the trolls, I see many people thinking that this is a make or break year for Russell and a lot of people thinking that next year is the make or break year.
I don’t see anybody honestly saying Russell is a bust since he was as good as reasonably expected to be at the end of the last year.
By the end of this year, I expect him to have flashed greatness and thats about it. The following year if all he does is flash, then the Raiders need to worry.
At that point, with heavy reliance on a good run game, they will have moved up into the average playoff team ranks but without either a dominate defense or QB, they will have turned into the Chargers/Broncos of recent years. Able to get to the playoffs but no more. If Russell progresses to his apparent potential then there is no reason to not expect the Raiders to be able to compete with the top tier teams at that point.
Although at that time there will probably be a lockout and god knows what will happen with completely uncapped spending by Dallas/Washington.

From NFL.Com:
Jeremy T., Johnston, IA 02:16 PM ET
Hi Gil. I love your work. Most people have already written the Raiders off as a bad team. I think with all of the talent they have, they really could suprise some people, and be in contention for the AFC West title. What do you expect out of the Raiders this year?
Gil Brandt, NFL.com
I agree Jeremy. I think they’ll be much-improved. If you look at the last six games that Russell started last season, it was a pretty good run. In one game, he completed 10-of-11 passes and then they knocked Tampa out of the playoffs in the season finale. In a recent chat, I said I thought the Raiders were capable of winning the AFC West. I stick by that. I think Tom Cable is a good, hard-nosed football coach — they’ll be strong in the running game and protecting the QB.

May 22nd, 2009 at 5:11 pm
On the weight issue… A friend of mine is a professional cyclist. When she was in her early 20’s she still carried some baby fat and didn’t look particularly lean, just kinda soft.
As she got older and her metabolism changed a little bit she leaned out and looks quite different. I don’t think the work level changed a whole lot from then to now, as she was at the Olympic Training Center earlier in her career, and they work those people pretty hard.
JaMarcus is a young guy. Does he need to work more on his conditioning? I haven’t heard anything like that; the only thing I’ve heard is that he doesn’t LOOK the way some folks think he should. That may change as he gets older, but one thing’s for sure; if he starts lighting it up this year nobody will be complaining about his apppearance.

can someone post that youtube video of tom cable playing football in college
May 22nd, 2009 at 5:40 pm
alot of people are just stupid. they want russell to be what THEY want him to be. nobody commented on the pictures of big ben, eli and quinn. problem is people on this blog just like to bitch over and over again about anything. they complain about espn but then they do the same type of shiit talking about the team. great fans they are.its only may and they act like the season is over. cable never said jamarcus doesnt work he said he wants him to do more.rich gannon said that it takes alot of young guys time before thay get it so its not like yung jeezy is the only one. whats funny is alot of these fools talk about him but u know alot of these jackasses dont work out much themselves. they care about him being in shape more than themselves which is stupid.

TW,
I’m a huge fan of Animation and drawing, my wife is the real artist in the Family. I learned about Dali from her.
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:13 pm
Alfred Hitchcock did a movie called Spellbound with Gregory Peckery. Dali did a 2-3 min dream sequence in it. Have you seen it?
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:14 pm
You live in San Deigo right O? I’m going down there for the Comic Con, you said you like drawing, it’s pretty cool.
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:20 pm
TW,
I don’t use colors, pencil or coal only.
Ya dude I’m in SD, let me know exactly when you are coming.
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:22 pm
TW,
Do you like Japanese Animation ( Anime )?
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:23 pm
My brother lives in Laguna Nigel & we’ll be driving up there 7/23. I paint with an airbrush. I’m still setting up my studio in my house. Do alot of drawing as well.
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:23 pm
TW,
No I haven’t seen it, is it good?
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:25 pm
I used to collect comics & alot of the titles started going to Anime. Haven’t gotten into the animation as much like Ghost in the Machine etc.
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:26 pm
Spellbound? Yeah, it’s a classic Hitchcock, B/W thriller they show it on AMC sometimes.
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:26 pm
Me and my wife dream about a studio!! Hard to do now with a kid, and maybe more soon.
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:29 pm

Watch Akira and princess Mononoke. They are great.
Akira was done in the late 80s.
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:34 pm

I want more kids, but the wife wants to wait. Some crap about needing more time for drawing, painting, etc… lo
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:40 pm
Have you heard of Image/Malibu Comics in SD? I tried to get a portfolio ready for a job but I was too late back in the 90s.They do Spawn, Wildcats, Young Blood comics.
May 23rd, 2009 at 12:41 pm

Everybody should read this article about Marshall. This is the most encouraged I’ve been about our DC and defense for years.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/181634-who-is-raiders-defensive-coordinator-john-marshall
May 23rd, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Saint,
#420, LMAO.
420??!! Is that a sign?
May 23rd, 2009 at 3:37 pm
LTR,
I read it today, it’s a great article about Marshall.
May 23rd, 2009 at 3:39 pm
Saint, thanks for the link, I learned a few things. I am confident JR will be all right for us. I still wish he was 235lbs.
May 23rd, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Cool. Thanks LTR. Let Marshall do it Al, sit back and enjoy the rest of your days.
May 23rd, 2009 at 3:44 pm
After seeing some highlites of JR to McF I can’t wait to see some well exicuted screen passes to McF. I can’t remember the RAiders pulling many of those the last 6yrs.
May 23rd, 2009 at 3:45 pm
TW,
The last time JR was 235, he was a Jr at HS!!
May 23rd, 2009 at 3:47 pm
An attacking 3-3-5 defense with blitzes from just about anywhere sounds really good with all the young fresh motors we now have. I think we’re going to surprise the league and maybe do some damage. BTW, How about Heavy Metal? Just watched The Secret of Nimh? Bummer Dom Delouise died. Final Fantasy the Spirits Within was the best computer generated I’ve seen.
May 23rd, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Darren gets up the field FAST!
More than anything the OLine has to step up this year. If Russell gets time, he’s accurate enough because these guys will be getting open. McFadden out of the backfield should be just a checkdown in most situations, not the only choice Russell has because the pass rush is coming straight up the middle.
Miller should light it up this year!
May 23rd, 2009 at 3:54 pm
LTR,
Where the hell did that come from??
I loved Heavy Metal when it came out. Nose time!!!
May 23rd, 2009 at 3:54 pm
From LTR’s article on Marshall:
His defenses are all fundamentally sound and he teaches his player’s where they must be in terms of the scheme so that the unit plays as a unit. He does not want his player’s doing more then their job and getting out of position.
————–
Thank GAWWDDD. That’s something I’ve also missed the last 6yrs!! Ryan had them otta position at every point of attack.
lol
May 23rd, 2009 at 3:54 pm
LTR,
It depends on which Heavy Metal? I don’t like CGI thay much, I like real Animation.
May 23rd, 2009 at 3:59 pm
LTR,
I heard about The Secret of NIMH, I was 3 when it came out! I havent seen it yet, but it’s on my list.
May 23rd, 2009 at 4:01 pm
That Final Fantasy movie was pretty amazing though. You start forgetting that your watching a “cartoon”. I’m with O on this one though, they took that too far. They could have just made a regular movie with real women!!
May 23rd, 2009 at 4:02 pm
O,
You can watch the whole thing on Youtube. The kids really liked it. I was already chasing girls when it came out so I don’t remember it as a youngin.
May 23rd, 2009 at 4:12 pm
hahaha. I had to look up Final Fantasy movie, that’s the one when the guy looks like Ben Affleck & the girl like Kate beckensale or Jenifer Connaly. Yeah they could have made that with real people.
May 23rd, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Where did everyone go? The Nuggets don’t beat the Lakers until another hour.
May 23rd, 2009 at 4:58 pm

TW, you live in Co.??
May 23rd, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Yeah, & not much to hope for, this would be monumental to win this series. I don’t watch much until the playoffs but EVERYONE is tired of the Lakers xcept the west coast. lol
May 23rd, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Well, best of luck to you guys.
Me, I’m from the west coast. Love my Lakers and look forward to a great series with you guys.

George Karl looks a lot like a middle aged Popeye at the very least a close relative. All he needs is a sailor suit and a corn cob pipe. And a retort “well blow me down”.
I wonder if his wife looks like a middle aged Olive.
May 23rd, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Saint, LTR, and TW,
I’m so sorry for leaving like that, please excuse me. I had to leave, I’m sorry.
Saint,
Animation is about style, good lines, and it focuses on drawing more than anything. IMO CGI is a quick fix. Look at all the great Animation Movies, from Disney to deep underground Animation. Nonehave CGI, all done by hand.
May 23rd, 2009 at 8:50 pm
To bad he’s not as strong to finish, maybe he needs a little more spinach.
May 23rd, 2009 at 8:58 pm
TW,
I’m still amazed by Destino!!!!!
That’s animation at it’s best.
Bravo Disney and Dali, Bravo!!

May 24th, 2009 at 8:34 am
TW,
Just watched the 2nd clip, the part when he’s drinking and looking through the Glass was great. I think I want to watch that movie.
May 24th, 2009 at 9:01 am
O, no problem, you don’t need to apologize on a blog. We have thick skin, that’s developed by guys like Dude/MR/NarBo,etc who just bash just to be bashing.
One of the reasons Dali was so “Sureal” or just plain weird is his mother had a boy the yr before Dali that had died. When she had Salvador she gave him the same name as the first boy. Salvador was also born on the same day a yr later & she would take him to the grave to morn her 1st born SD, Sooooo, in effect he was celebrating his birthday every yr at his own grave.
He also said “The only difference between me and a madman is that I’m not mad!”
One of the most interesting people to live, I think.
May 24th, 2009 at 9:03 am
OK you day trippers,

So you’ve heard the story of spreading dung all over his suit in anticipation of a date with friends then changed his mind. When he came down the staircase to meet them he imagined what it would be like if he had worn it. Then he burst out laughing to exhaustion until they thought he went mad.
May 24th, 2009 at 9:34 am
TW,
LMAO, no I never heard that one before. I have his book, The Construction Of The Image 1925- 1930.
My favorite Dali work is the Black Cherub.
May 24th, 2009 at 9:40 am
TW,
My Favorite Now is Destino. I wached it no less than 20 + times in 24 hours.
I love it, 50+ years a head of it’s time!!!!!!
I like to look at Dali’s work while listening to Muse. Smoke a little, and its heaven on earth!!
May 24th, 2009 at 10:01 am

And “Portrait of the artist with fried bacon”
May 24th, 2009 at 10:08 am

2- He was influenced by Picasso.
May 24th, 2009 at 10:33 am

I can’t stop thinking about Destino!!! I’m watching it over and over again. I guess, I’m just amazed of how great it is, and it was made in the 40s.
May 24th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
TW,
Watch KARAS. It’s a great Anime, also very surreal. Great work for new Anime.
May 24th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Putting 1&2 together Burgess will get traded is my hunch. Which gives further reason why a few DEs were drafted when it appeared that the Raiders had more pressing needs elsewhere.
Many are being way to impatient and over-analytical with respect to JR. 1-year starting. Just focus on the stats and progression throughout last year and come back to me. I don’t expect a bursting out the gate this season with new WRs and all; but I do expect to see further progression and much more consistency as the season unfolds.
At the moment I have more concerns about the Oline and the Dline.
May 24th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
The numbers of JR are misleading. He had training wheels on all year and teams didnt even pay attention to the Raiders passing game, which explains how he got a few TDs and less picks. The guy just dznt get it, he absolutely does not care and it shows. He will always be where he is at right now because he wont work like top notch qbs do.
May 24th, 2009 at 2:07 pm
Forget his early numbers Lelie and Curry were starting wr Harris was starting LT and Fargas was starting rb no QB would be good with those horrible players when he got Chaz,JLH,Dmac,Bush,Henderson he played much better.
GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!
May 24th, 2009 at 2:15 pm
I feel that JRUSS should be given this year and NEXT before even thinking about the BUST word. The recent story about JRUSS,with the Snakes comments, failed to mention that my favorite(Stabler)sat for FIVE years before starting! So,guess I disagree w/norco bob,mr,dude, dakota, and others ps,do agree with snakes observations of Dmac touching the ball 30 times per game/with a stingy/nasty defense
May 24th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
My main prob with DMC is that he is top heavy and slender waste down …so he won’t have those AP moves that I love to see imho. But he is tremendously talented and will get his chance to shine this year for sure. He will be the starter with Bush/Fargas splitting the remaining carries.
I envision a scheme where they’ll have 2 rbs in a lot of plays. DMC being used often as a wide out.
May 24th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Terrapin, bingo, just keep/get the ball in his hands, run Bush and Fargas up the middle, that opens up the field for Miller,Dhb,Jlh,Chaz, etc ps I Know, wish it was that easy RAIDERSSSS
May 24th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
Like I said before – with respect to the O, its the Oline that I’ll be paying particular attention to come preseason. If they protect well, it’ll we a good year for the Raiders. If they can’t, its another bum year (up & down year at best …just flat out sux at worst). The better the line gets the better this team gets.
The more and more I think about it the more I see the DHB pick being a phenomenal pick all things being considered. Crabtree’s speed is questionable and if true, he would’ve only gave the defenses a shorter field to play – not much better than last year. Crowding the infield for ZM.
If this Oline ever settles in I look forward these young guns shining. A lot of talent is on this team – much more than before.
May 24th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Terrapin nice to see you in here again, how have you been?
May 24th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Justin Fargas is the starting RB for the Oakland Raiders. Period. When are you fools going to get that? McFadden will end up with a ton of touches but Fargas will be the main ball carrier. DMC will get 10 or 12 carries and 3 or 4 catches per game. Bush will get his token 5 or 6 per game but he will be on the sidelines more often than not. He is not as good as some of you like to believe.
May 24th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Terrapin that’s what I’ve been saying for some time, (concerning the talent) the Raiders really have a chance to do a lot of damage. I know most don’t believe the line and I also would have rather had another OT but I knew Cable wasn’t going to do it. At first i was upset but how can I argue with him. Aside from K Harris he’s done wonders with our line.
Another thing that I think we’ll see, This defense is a lot better talent wise than given credit for. If we play an attack style we can be dominant I know that sounds a little crazy, but I see it. Our problem on defense were lack of discipline and technigue NOT talent. Everyone thought we needed DT’s but what we need was to stay aggressive and play with discipline.
If you look at the games when we attacked, we were very successfful. Whenever we pressured the QB we got good results and I’m not just talking about blitzing but aggression from the front 4. And from what I understand that is the Marshall plan.
Back to the Oline if you think about it after Harris was benched the Oline really held it’s own. I’m not nearly as worried about the OLine as everyone else. Sure we’ll have games when a great pass rush may give us problems but nothing like ‘06. And I think that most people are remembering that.
May 24th, 2009 at 3:46 pm
NMF, I totally agree #500
May 24th, 2009 at 3:48 pm
I’m watching Barnes right now agaisnt the Titans, he’s not bad at all. He’s not Orlando Pace but he’s very decent.
May 24th, 2009 at 3:58 pm
I’ve been real busy. Focusing on a lot of things professionally (CFA, searching for a different job, jump starting this business partnership).
I know I left here on bad terms b/c I was pissed off with what occurred last season. But oh well, we all can’t have what we want. I just hope for the best. Someday they get over the hump. All turds rise to the surface at some point.
May 24th, 2009 at 3:59 pm
Even the Browns (color of a turd) had they’re day.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:03 pm
Terrapin,
Can I ask a question about CFA? I major in Finance at SDSU.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
The level of talent is truly impressive. I just need to see more improvement on the lines. Most NFL QBs will have no problems with accuracy if they are given the time to pass. If Mario turns out to be Super Mario indeed, then that will catapult the team in competitiveness. Each additional second given to the QB counts in this league.
I’m really psyched about our safeties, Branch & Mitchell. These are physical ball players – big time hitters.
The defense has something to prove. I cannot be so confident of the line given that they’ve disappointed so much in the past.
What you say rings true though. When they attack – when they mix it up, the talent on the defense is hard to game. I’ve seen it and wondered why they don’t keep at it.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Priesttj, does Pete Franklin ring a bell? Days of calling talk shows, getting into Raider debates, etc Rod Brooks, working for the initial 1050,on the Raider sidelines, brings something to mind! Why cant the Bay Area have a Raider backed station, tired of knbr and the niner s—a–,seems Sac based stations give the raiders a fair shake! This blog is fine, would just like a call in show featuring the Raiders#1,as well as Bay Area coverage of sports teams
May 24th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Sure. I only took Level I so far.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
Terrapin,
I know it’s 3 levels. I was wondering if I can do it all or part of it, as part of my Masters?
May 24th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
So,
Instead of doing masters then CFA, maybe I cab do both at once.
I will have the extra required credits in Fin and Acc as part of my BS.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Can do both, sorry.
Also, was level 1 hard?
May 24th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Terrapin you mentined DHB, and I just wanted to make an official comment of sorts about the kid. I watched film of him and like you said I realized what they are doing. His speed is awesome, there are a lot of very fast players in this league but he has ELITE speed. At 30 yards he has a burst kind of a 5th gear. JLH has outstanding speed but DHB is just more powerful with it. Only Randy Moss IMO have I seen such explosiveness where at 40 yards when you think they are running full speed, they kick it in and man O’ man it’s scarry. With Russell’s arm and DHB’s speed at some point they will get on the same page and when they do forget it.
Randy has played with some great arms but he still outruns them, very few WR’s can run under Russell’s passes but this kid can. It is going to be fun to watch because I don’t think this has ever happened since maybe the “Mad Bomber” and Warren Wells. It is the reason why Wells caught so many TD’s (every 3rd catch) more often than any WR in history. Lamonica couldn’t overthrow him. There is the timing thing but once DHB is 30 yards down field Russell can just throw over the top of the defense and DHB will just outrun everyone to the ball. Also DHB’s athleticism makes him, Branch, Wells and Moss very rare athletes. Incidentally they all played here.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
I should have said Questions. lol
May 24th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Bush has quick feet soft hands is 245 he learned how to pick up the blitz much better late in the year he is better than fargas in every way. The d will be better if the offense can score and move the ball.
GO RAIDERS!!!!!!
May 24th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
Hello Nation!
Memorial Day Celebration.
My hope is all the military families and those who served have a great day, and remember the good, the present and those who served for our freedom to voice many opinions.
Bless you all.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
Please let us see Mitchell/Branch !!!!
May 24th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Hello Dell, how are you?
May 24th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Not sure if I fully understand the question; but here are the requirements:
http://www.cfainstitute.org/cfaprog/charterholder/program/program_require.html
It is a lot of studying involved; so if you were interested in it I would recommended taking it after your Masters program so you will have the time to devout to each. Plus, many firms will pay for your CFA exams once you begin working, if not already.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
They do have a new all sports station that’s quite good #860 KHRT I believe are the call letters.
Yeah! sometimes I think of old Pete, he was definitely a ‘one of a kind’.
Anyway gotta go!
Adios!
May 24th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Raider O
I’m off to a barbeque. I employ two CFA’s. The test takes time to prepare for and is very difficult.
The first two tests can be taken during your school study, but the third test you must have worked or had an internship with some employer to sit for the third test. I believe a year of employment is required.
Terrapin, will tell you the quantitive analysis and the other topics are difficult, but if you study and prepare for the information the degree of difficulty is not so bad.
The CFA’S I know earn well over $250,000 per year after 5-7 years of experience, it is a great profession to have and good luck.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Terrapin,
Thank you for the link sir, and I do appreciate the advise.
What I was asking is:
Since it’s not required to have a masters for CFA. Can I use the credits from CTA towards my Masters program? That way, I don’t have to keep studying for 5 more years? 2 for Masters, and 2-3 for CFA.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Dell,
Thank you for the info sir, I plan to work abroad. In the Midd East.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:34 pm
Dell,
I almost forgot, enjoy the BBQ sir.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
CTA is CFA, sorry.
One last question please.
In the Finance sector, do I need a Masters and a CFA for better employment, or is the CFA is all what they require other than experience .
May 24th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
You know, that’s a good question. Unfortunately, I don’t have the answer. I haven’t even begun to look into a Masters program so I can’t say if they’ll give you any credit for taking the CFA. Plus each program is different I suppose.
If you can do it. Do it. Its like knocking two birds out with one stone. But the drawback is – you’ve got to pass or you won’t likely get any credit (if applicable). Not many people pass. The pass rate for Level I in December was in the 30% range. But if you put enough time in it, you can pass. A lot of it is about time & Preparation.
There are plenty pluses and minuses though that you’ll have to weigh. For example, you can take it now and it will cost you a good sum of money or you can wait and have your employer pay for it (if applicable). You can take it now and pay the cost; which could be weighed against the prospect of setting yourself up for a brighter future down the road (makes you a more competitive candidate vs those who haven’t done the same).
Many things to consider I guess – all depending on your situation.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
What’s up Raider O. I’m an SDSU alum from 99. Common reader but rarely a poster in here. Go Aztecs! Go Raiders!
May 24th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
Nevadaraider,
Go Aztecs, we have 2 on the roster.
May 24th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
Hoping to see the Raiders unveil a new version of Thunder and Lightning this year: Clarence Davis and Van Eeghen / Banaszak, Kenny King and Van Eeghen, Wheatley and Garner, now DMC and Bush. Am I missing anyone? Allen and Jackson?
May 24th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Terrapin,
2 things I should have told you:
1- I’m 30, I don’t have the luxury of time. Still working at BS at SDSU.
2- I’m self employed, so I can make time.
Also, I’m doing well now. I have a 3.79 GPA as a Jr. I don’t have problems with tests or studying.
By the way, Im working to improve my GPA. I want a 3.9+.
wish me luck bro.
May 24th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Wheatly and the Saint!!!
May 24th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Brady Hoke better fix our football team. Saw Kirk Morrison at training camp last year and said to him, “Go Aztecs!” He just kind of laughed, more ashamed then proud. Who can blame him? The team puts talent in the NFL every year and almost never wins. At least the basketball team is good! Go to any games?
May 24th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
Generally speaking, the more you have the better. Anything that separates you from the crowd is a good thing.
I’ll give you two people (me & one of my boys): Me – I got a Bachelors in Economics. I interned at Morgan my Junior year. After graduating, it was tough finding a job (Bachelors has become a saturated market …many ppl have one) but I landed one with the same group I interned with at JP. Its a middle-office type roll in the cash business. Pay is decent relative to where I live but definitely not enough for me. But in a continuous pursuit for better things – not to mention my independent mindset, I’m looking elsewhere for employment to provide a dependable stream of cash while I work on this business startup.
My boy – We graduated same year from the same school. He got a Bachelors in Finance. I’m not sure if he had a lot of offers; but he decided to go straight through for his Masters. He got accepted in a program from an elite school – masters in mathematical finance I believe. It cost him a lot of money. After the program he landed a good job with Goldman involving measuring risk or something like that. He’s getting paid good money too, more than me, but his cost of living is much much higher.
This story is still writing itself. Often its not where you start off its where you end! Your ambition. Your determination. Your goals. Will determine a lot.
May 24th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Terrapin,
I have ambition and Determination. I have been working since I was 15, so I can have enough money for EDU. I’m paying for it cash, since I don’t qalify for FA due to some stupid Selective agreement that I didn’t sign.
I was accepted to UCB, but I can’t afford it. I want this so bad, I can taste it. lol
I appreciate your time and advise. I agree, it’s not where you start, but where you finish. I know other people have an edge on me by their age, but ill make up for that with grades, brain, personality, and my Determination.
I wish you all the best with your new business, I may need a job soon. lol
May 24th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
I went to a few football games before I was a student there, but not after I started attending. Fall Sems are the Hardest for me, that’s the best time for my business. I sell cars.
May 24th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
I haven’t been to SDSU football games since 98. I have gone to a few hoops games over the years, and I like what Fisher has done, but I’m up near Reno, so I don’t get there easily.
May 24th, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Lord, I despise the Kobes, but when the sNuggetly punk tried to kick a foul on the worthless Balkanite at the end of the third, and then spout crap at him on a 2 for 10 night on threes, I hoped the resulting tech would mean a one point win for the Kobes. Good enough.
I was going to mention that the only player I liked in the West Con finals was Trevor Ariza and that was before someone mentioned that he is a Raider fan.
At least in the East Con there is Pietrus and Foyle for Warrior fans, plus Superman and the King.
H B’day, Bob Dylan.
May 24th, 2009 at 8:34 pm
Raider O has to step up and put points on the board this year.
Red zone offense needs to be priority.
May 24th, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Read an article on how KC’s new coach Todd Haley gave a rare compliment to Larry Johnson.
No doubt Johnson’s a great back, but he’s been injured alot lately and no matter what he says, isn’t thrilled with still being a Chief.
I remember his departure this off season was assured until it was decided he would NOT get paid his $3.5 million if he left the team.
Suddenly he was happy a clam to play for KC in 09′.
Haley’s supposed to be a real A hole too so hoepfully the Chiefs will continue to suck and self destruct.
Let some one else in AFC West take over doing that for a while
May 24th, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Nnamdi21, redzone offense is simple DMC, MBush, ZM and DHB or Chaz. If a defense can stop all that then you take your hat off to them. Incidentally Chaz and DHB both have 40 inch vertcles. Russell will have his pick of the litter.
I’m starting to think that LeBron James is the greatest athlete I’ve ever seen in any sport. Until now that was Wilt Chamberlain. If LB played football he would be a WR name another human that could cover him. If he played Baseball he would be the best centerfielder ever, he just have to hit the curveball.
Hockey no problem, his biggest hurdle would be skating.
Top 5 Greatest Athletes I’ve ever seen B4 now
1. Wilt Cahmberlain
2. Jim Brown
3. Bo Jackson
4. Muhammad Ali
5. Willie Mays
Lebron James vs Jackie Robinson 6th
honorable mention:
a. Jesse Owens
b. Michael Jordan
c. Gale Sayers
d. Rafer Johnson
e. Dwight Howard
May 24th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
LeBron James is ascending to the top of that list fast.
May 24th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
They need to do a “Bo knows” commercial with LeBron I’m sure there aren’t many athletic endevuors that LBJ couldn’t do and excel in fact I’d be very surprised if there were any at all.
His size, agility, power, speed, body control and athleticism would allow him to excel at anything. Some of the things he does on the court make watching Michael Jordan look ordinary.
May 24th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
24 post#17
thought I would comment on your question or statement concerning our defense during minicamps. We’re blitzing the offense and creating havoc for them and you wondered why we couldn’t do that on defense on a regular basis.
Well the simple answer is, we can’t lose games in the minicamp’s if we get beat. Blitzing in camp helps prepare the offense for regular season. The’re trying to improve blitz pickup and coordination. No coach in his right mind would just blitz indiscriminantly as we’re doing in camp in a real game.
Teams in mid-season form would kill you. We aren’t in midseason form. So while what we’re doing in camp will help the defense some, a well coordinated defense that employs the blitz smartly can be very effective. Blitzing also takes into account how well your players are at blitzing. If you don’t have a great talent for it, it wouldn’t be wise to do it. Your talent must fit your scheme. Which is why we drafted the way that we did, to add the type of players that ARE great blitzers. That should answer the question some had during the draft about all the DE/LBers that we drafted. They obviously wanted to employ a very heavy blitz package. And they got the players they think can deliver.
May 24th, 2009 at 11:11 pm
priesttj, baseball,Mays best all around, period!I like Walter Payton ,a guy who missed one game with only a defense to help him until the mid 80s,I mean,HE was the offense for most of his career!Bo Jackson is the best athlete Ive seen, two sport, and I just wish we all could have seen him on the field longer, but for the freak injury! RAIDERSSS
May 25th, 2009 at 12:11 am
Walter Payton was very hard to leave off the list but I felt Gale Sayers athletically was a better pick. But if you choose Walter you’ll get no arguement from me. In a word he was incredible.
The sports world was cheated when Bo went down. No one like him before or after.
May 25th, 2009 at 12:15 am
DHB could be mentioned in this arguement if he reaches his potential. Randy Moss would be if not for his contraversial stint with the Raiders. Moss as well as Deion Sanders and Barry Sanders are on the fringe.
May 25th, 2009 at 12:18 am
Delete DHB I got carried away let’s let him at least put together a body of work. But his talent is flat out scarry………and in 5 years that comment wont seem so silly.
May 25th, 2009 at 12:23 am
This is crazy. Did you guys know this…..
When Hurricane Katrina was approaching New Orleans in August 2005, Dianna Chenevert encouraged Fats to evacuate, but he chose to stay at home with his family, partly because of his wife’s poor health. Unfortunately his house was in an area that was heavily flooded. Chenevert e-mailed writers at the Times Picayune newspaper and the Coast Guard with the Dominos’ location.
Someone thought Fats was dead, and spray-painted a message on his home, “RIP Fats. You will be missed”, which was shown in news photos. On September 1, Domino’s agent, Al Embry, announced that he had not heard from the musician since before the hurricane had struck.
Later that day, CNN reported that Domino was rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter. Embry confirmed that Domino and his family had been rescued. The Domino family was then taken to a Baton Rouge shelter, after which they were picked up by JaMarcus Russell, the starting quarterback of the Louisiana State University football team, and Fats’ granddaughter’s boyfriend. He let the Dominoes stay in his apartment. The Washington Post reported that on September 2, they had left Russell’s apartment after sleeping three nights on the couch. “We’ve lost everything”, Domino said, according to the Post.[8]
By January 2006, work to gut and repair Domino’s home and office had begun. For the meantime, the Domino family is residing in Harvey, Louisiana.
Chenevert replaced the Southern Stars poster Fats Domino lost in Katrina and President George W. Bush also made a personal visit and replaced the medal that President Bill Clinton had previously awarded Fats.
May 25th, 2009 at 12:37 am
Yeah it’s been reported, Russell took him in but no one has interviewed Russell concerning it. I wonder why?
You know there is an article in the newspaper about Alex Smith, it appears the media is trying to rehab Alex’s image again to sell him to 49er fans.
If they can’t destroy Russell with all the negativity then they will repair Smith. They jsut don’t want the Raiders succeeding at something the 49ers failed miserably at.
This may seem like a reach but the way the media deals with Smith as opposed to Russell is at least curious. You never read about Smith’s accuracy or completion percentage in minicamp. But that’s all you read about with Russell. As poorly as Smith has performed the national or local media rarely mention him. Why?
May 25th, 2009 at 4:17 am
Priesttj,
Everyone already knows A.Smith is a bust,old news,imo
May 25th, 2009 at 4:51 am
What’s up fellas I’m biased because he is my idol and favorite player but Marcus Allen was the most complete rb ever he could block better than any other rb and the man was the greatest pass catcher at rb he could have played wr with his hands, but if were talking the best it starts and ends with Jim Brown imagine hardly any passes and 11 in the box and he still killed guys for 5 yrds a pop.
May 25th, 2009 at 4:53 am
PriesttJ smith had a weeny arm in college and always played out of the shotgun horrible reach by niners but davis may be just as big a bust a te at 4 overall wow and guy can’t catch.
May 25th, 2009 at 5:04 am
Priest lebron ain’t jordan remeber jordan would take a beating in the 80’s no flagrant fouls no ejections you could kill a guy and only get a personal, the next time lebron drives imagine someone just grabbing him and slamming him down lebron would freak had would all these modern NBA players man it used to be no free baskets and and and 1 were almost impossible because the d would tackle you lebron is a beast but best bb player has to be Jordan modern era, Big O before that and this is coming from a lifetime Laker fan
May 25th, 2009 at 5:29 am
Like Ricky Mahorn
May 25th, 2009 at 5:54 am
Exactly 4eva plus you just never gave up free baskets you were taught if you foul make sure he don’t make the basket.
If were gonna add all-time great athletes where is Jim Thorpe and Bullet Bob 100gold and SB.
May 25th, 2009 at 6:03 am
Man there are just sooo many all-time greats!!!
1 of thee all-time greats imo was when Jessie Owens shoved it down hitlers throat in hitlers own back yard!!!
May 25th, 2009 at 6:38 am
Nobody disses A. Smith because everybody already knows he’s a documented bust.
Russell is a bust in the making so they’re on him.
May 25th, 2009 at 7:17 am
Just to put things in perspective:
Eli Manning was a BUST until he won the SuperBowl!
To quote the great Mel Brooks, “With the birth of the artist comes the AFTERBIRTH….the critic!”
How many of us go to a movie because what you heard from a critic, someone who gets paid to watch movies for a living?
Then that’s how many should take critics seriously because otherwise the smarter of us can decide for ourselves. Only weasles report falsely to sway public opinion:
Dude
MR
Narco Boob
FOX news(opinion chnl)
Eli Manning for gawwdd’s sake!
May 25th, 2009 at 8:21 am
4eva…
I wrote 408, havent heard from him…
May 25th, 2009 at 9:01 am
He will get 2 you soon
May 25th, 2009 at 9:01 am
Hey, LMN. I was checking the movie sales for the weekend & thought Terminator would be the moster hit but here in the US Night at the Museum out did it! incredible.
May 25th, 2009 at 9:06 am
Good morning Nation.
I hope all is well with 408.
May 25th, 2009 at 9:08 am
Happy holidays to all my dear friends in here,..I would like to dedicate this Memorial Day, to the memory of the good ol days in Oakland,…when Gruden was here, building a great team on the verge of multiple superbowls,…after games he would race to the endzone and high-five us all,…how he would not take any crap from the refs or punk players,…however, the old man was threatened by his publicity, how he was loved by the fans, players, media,…so instead of a dynasty in the making, in the middle of the night, the old man sold him for 8 million dollars and worthless draft picks,…thank you Mr Davis,..oh and you got what you always wanted in a head coach, a baffoon who doesnt even try to hide the fact hes a puppet,..if it werent for drugs, alcohol, and tailgating, I wouldnt even consider going to games anymore,..happy holiday.
May 25th, 2009 at 9:10 am
I’m a huge fan of T1 and T2, but T3 was stupid. I heard a few good things about T4, but I’m not going to go watch it.

NMF, Marcus Allen is also my favorite Raider.
Two people made the same mistake: They became the face of the organization, became larger than the owner in the media’s eyes, became the face of the Raiders over Al, and he didn’t like it so he shipped them out. Those two are Marcus Allen and Jon Gruden. Am I missing anyone?
May 25th, 2009 at 10:02 am
LMN,
What Bob said didn’t bother me, I was thinking the same thing. I just like people to know when I smile because they can’t see it,
I think of people smiling to me as a blessing from God. I try to do the same with others. If it brings me that much joy, then IMO it does the same to others too.

Just reading about Kim Jong Il’s latest tantrum.
I tell ya, get that little mutha in one of these big multi-lateral conferences. Then Obama get’s up, puts a pair of gloves on and slowly walks right at him(all pimp like) and just starts bitch slapping that dude until he is just a pile of blood, piss and tears!!!
Send that sh!t out all over the world, tell him he’s done as the “dear leader” and force China to take the country.

All of those records Marcus held should have been achieved as a Raider!!!!! He started complaining about not getting the ball enough when everybody on the team knew he should be getting more touches. He was a media darling in LA due to his days at USC. Overshadows Davis, so Davis tries to ruin his career.
Gruden restores the winning, is on prime time highlights all of the time with his Chuckie-like scowls and grimaces, and the camera eats it up. Davis feels like Davis is too big for the team, and that Davis isn’t getting proper credit, and ships him off.
In these two instances, Davis clearly chose ego over winning, and he is paying for it now big time.
May 25th, 2009 at 10:18 am

I feel sorry for some of those young Women and Men that die in war. Some of those kids don’t know what they signed up for. Some do it to travel and see the world, others do it for money, or to escape a crap job at a small town. The Military needs to change the age from 18 to 21.
If yoy are not old enough to drink, are you old enough to make a dicison that envolves their life??!!
I appreciate what they did, and I’m not trying to disrespect them, their Family, Vets, or current Military. My only issue is age.

Every culture has a warrior class, or it better.
The best fighting men in this country, in my experience, come from the south, black and white.
That is a generality, but I would bet that per capita southern boys would have an edge.
So here’s to the warriors.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:25 pm

May 25th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
whats the difference between memorial day and veterans day, then? 1st is for the dead, 2nd is for the alive ones?
May 25th, 2009 at 1:33 pm
LMN,
It’s a day to honor men and women who gave their lives for this country.
Also known as Decoration Day if you are in the Military.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:40 pm
V Day is to celebrate people who served in the military.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
LMN,
It’s simple:
M Day is to honor those who gave their lives for this country.
V Day is to honor those who served in the Military.
May 25th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
well, of respect i wont say my opinion about that…

Guys took the JR pics to a whole new level. I was only commenting on how big JR gut was. I could care less about him partying. I knew NFL players who would workout all day and do coke all night. As long as they stay in shape I could care less whet they do in their downtime.
I dont by the Stabler partying comparisons. Guys are on an entire different level physically. You cant even compare the two. There were not 300 lbs guys running 4.7 40yd dashes back then.
May 25th, 2009 at 2:38 pm
LMN,
Her Mom did a great job. She used to spend an hour a day teaching her letters when she was only 4 months. At the age of 1, she started teaching her for 2 hours a day. She counts, talks, and sometimes even act like a 4 or 5 year old child.
May 25th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Raider O
a parent needs to be proud of their child/ren.. even without a reason…. though you clearly have one =)
May 25th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
LMN,
Thank you.
I think all children are capable of doing a lot, sometimes they don’t due to the evironment around them.
Most families in the US have 2 working parents, it’s really hard to make a lot of time for the kids that way.
We do what we can, but it’s getting really hard to have a stayat home parent. Especially with this economy.
May 25th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Stay at home, sorry.
It’s harder in states like CA and NY, than Ohio or Indiana. Cost of living is very expensive in CA and NY. Incomes are not that diff, so you can live better in the mid west. IMHO

I’ll be back in a few hours, time to go play again.
Have a great night LMN, later Nation.
May 25th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
This is what I´m thinking….During the last 6 years I felt great about the direction our team was taking on the month of may. Every year the off season was the “BEST” part of our season…This year I feel really rotten about the direction of the team..we drafted the next james jett, we didn’t bring in major help for the DLine, our overwieght million-making QB can’t hit a screen, etc…So this is good right? Instead of living a downhill season, maybe this year things improve as the year goes by? right? yes? help.
May 25th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
Hope you’re right, Los.
Twocents, I had not heard that before aboout Marcus and other players’ wives. Recently watched Marcus on America’s Game: SB 18. According to him, he went to Davis and said, “I’d like to run more.” Davis responded, “In that case, take a few laps.”
May 25th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Nevadaraider,
I heard that third hand years ago, that is why I called it a rumor, although someone on here mentioned it also.
But my take on Al is that he is somewhat like a mafia Don, he’ll do anything to win but there are certain lines that you just don’t cross.
I have no idea whether it is true, but it sort of makes sense to me.
May 25th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
I agree. He is very much Don Raider. No one can be bigger than him. Both Gruden and M Allen became bigger than him, so he tried to ruin one’s career and shipped the other one out. I like to think that Davis was always “win at all costs.” But his treatment of Allen and Gruden were the only times that his ego interfered with “Just win baby.” IMHO
May 25th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
I think Gruden just didn’t play “Raider” football. And in retrospect, Al may have been right about “Chucky”.
He was handed a team in Tampa Bay that had a great defense and the good fortune to play in the Super Bowl against a team that had not changed a single play since he had left.
What did he accomplish after that, nada.
May 25th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Oh don’t get me wrong. I’m not in favor of bringing him back, I just think we had a good thing going and Al’s ego got in the way. He almost admitted as much at the presser to fire Kiffin.
I do see some similarities with what Cable is doing now. They both tried to cure a culture of losing by bringing in the right kind of team guys. One of the first things Gruden did was get rid of Chester McGlockton and his poor work ethic, if memory serves me right. Then came two or three straight division titles?
May 25th, 2009 at 7:46 pm
Geeez…I went to San Diego this weekend and when I come back, everything looks the same. Wheres the news? Jerry, you’re slacking!

RAIDERS CONFIRM SNEAD IS OUT
Posted by Aaron Wilson on May 24, 2009, 8:42 a.m.
The Oakland Raiders have confirmed that personnel director Rich Snead is no longer working for the team, removing his name from their web site and acknowledging to RaiderBeat.com that both sides have agreed to go in separate directions.
The report follows RaiderBeat.com’s initial report in April that Snead’s tenure in Oakland was about to end two years after his arrival.
Snead reportedly maintained a low-key style and didn’t speak to reporters after joining the Raiders in 2007.
So, who’s whispering in owner Al Davis’ ear now?
With Snead’s departure, Keith Rowen “is said to have Davis’ ear more and more each day and playing a pivotal role in the shaping of the roster.”
May 25th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
Raider O – LOVED IT!!! Thats where I want to move and raise my kids when I have them. I hope the Chargers move to the East Coast or something.
May 25th, 2009 at 8:08 pm
24,
I hope that the Chargers will leave soon, and it looks like it might happen soon.
SD ISA great place to live, but it’s very expensive. Houses are at 200k and up now, they were 300k and 350k and up. By the way, that would be a 3 BD, 2 Baths, and about 1200-1300 SF in a descent to bad area.
May 25th, 2009 at 8:12 pm
24,
I rent. It’s cheaper to rent than to own a house, and that’s including the House’s equity over the years. How sad is that?!
May 25th, 2009 at 8:21 pm
And there is no other place in the world to live, that can be better than SD. IMHO
I lived in a lot of places, but SD is home, and it always will be. I love SD.
Mexico is 15-30 min away.
Mexican food is great, and the people are even better.
Las Vegas is 4 hours away, and LA is about 2 hours.
The weather is great. You can dirt bike, snow board, and surf in the Same Day.
People are chill, like Oak in the 60s and 70s.
I love it!!

When I was out today, I bought myself a video game. Its called Assassin’s Creed.
I’m going to go try it, I heard it was great!!
I’m so cheap, Madden is the only game I buy as soon as it’s released. I can’t pay $60 for a video game, so I wait till they are about 25-$30. lol
I didn’t buy my PS3, it was a gift. I’m really cheap, and I love it. LMAO

same blog over the past few days, I guess Jerry is taking the time to relax with family and friends.
Nevadaraider is so right about Davis, except that Davis has gone off on many many occasions. His ego is too big, he’s a control freak, has clearly lost his edge in picking players off the draft and has obviously deteriorated mentally over the years. His defends say he’s still mentally sharp, but Davis isn’t clearly sharp. His numerous, negative actions over the last few years show that he’s either senile or retarded. Ya, we’re not in “good-hands” with Davis at the wheel.
On the plus side, before leaving for the nite, we do have some good players, some with great potential: Russell, McFadden, Bush, Miller, along with some proven players.
With our division rivals in turmoil themselves, and with the worst defensive coordinator, ever, Rob Ryan, gone, maybe we’ll be better than we expect. Defensively we can only get much better, even with the same old scrubs, as Ryan is gone and anyone, even a homeless alcoholic walking down the street could be better than that jerkoff.
Kiffin tried to tell Davis, but Davis isn’t going to allow anyone to point out deficiencies. So, Davis took it out on Kiffin. Thanks to time, that issue is behind us, hopefully.
Good night Raider fans. Just 3 more months.

Why?
^^^^^^^
Exactly! It’s because the suck up pro Whiner media loves trying to use their manipluation tactics to influence the dimwits in the public.
May 25th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
659.
Love him or hate him, Davis is Raider football. There are a few other teams in the League that have sucked harder for longer and don’t have 3 championships and a boat load of play off appearances.
We’ll see how Mitchell and DHB do over the next 3 yrs.
Ryan ran the D according to … you guess it, Davis’s design.
The fact he couldn’t get his men to stop making fundamental mistakes is another matter, but he ran Davis’s, 4 man rush, pass cover defense with the exception of Ryans first year with a failed 3-4.
Ryan wasn’t horrible, the offense was. With out points on the board and sustained drives, our D was exposed.
Marshall will bring discipline and gap control and you will see an improvemnet this year IF the offense can put points on the board.
Last year we went 206 plays with out a TD at one point.
Lets hope our tackles can cut it…
Oh, BTW, Fug Kiffin. He contributed nothing and took alot on his way to Tennessee.
Pure A**hole.

Raider O – Sorry I disappeared on you as things got busy. Regarding SD being expensive…you’re crazy. I live in San Jose which is off the wall. 3 Bedroom/2 Bathroom houses go for $1.2 Million in many areas around this place. I see it all over the place, all the time. San Diego is way cheaper. The problem with S.F. is its even more expensive for alot less room with a tiny garage and a compacted house thats 3 stories with every story being small.
May 25th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
Raider O – Also…to give you an example of how expensive it is in San Jose…I was paying $1180 a month for a 1 bedroom/1Bathroom Apartment with 701 Sq. Ft. I was paying alot less because the rate is going for $1400 for the place. Its really expensive to rent and its impossible to own here.
May 25th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
Raider O – Regarding video games. I usually only buy the Madden games as well but I couldn’t help it and bought the PS3 and the XBox360 and I have to say that the PS3 cannot touch the XBox360 in terms of graphics and gameplay. I loved Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4 and 5. Just so you know…I owned and beat Assassin’s Creed. I really liked the game, it was fun to do all the side missions and killings. I was extremely dissatisfied with the ending however so I don’t mean to ruin it but you’ll see for yourself what I mean.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/05/25/SPCG17QNVA.DTL
Great article. Sorry if already posted, haven’t read above.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Raiders’ star finds strength in Berkeley High coach
When Nnamdi Asomugha was a Cal senior invited to the NFL combine, his agent offered to send Asomugha to any top-notch personal trainer of his choice. If Asomugha could boost his strength and speed, maybe he could nudge himself up a bit from his projected fifth-round draft slot.
“I’ll stay with ‘Zo,” Asomugha said.
It seemed like an ill-advised and possibly disastrous move by a naive college kid. ‘Zo is Alonzo Carter, then the football and track coach at McClymonds High in Oakland. Nice fellow, good with kids, but Carter had access to only the most primitive workout facilities and equipment, had zero experience prepping players for the combine, and had below-zero cache in the cutting-edge fitness world.
Footwork, Carter could teach that. He was once the lead dancer in MC Hammer’s concert troupe. But train a player for the combine?
In six weeks, Asomugha metamorphosed into a first-round NFL draftee. The Raiders – specifically, Al Davis – used their No. 1 pick to select Asomugha, who had been All-Pac-10 … honorable mention.
Six NFL seasons later, Asomugha is a certified football star. He is an unusual bird who has come to terms with being a Raider. He honestly respects Davis, and recently signed a three-year contract, the first two seasons guaranteed for $28.5 million.
On Sunday, Asomugha and Carter sat down in an Oakland coffee shop and talked about their friendship and its effect on both their lives.
Carter, who laughs a lot, notes Asomugha’s progress.
“His first two years (with the Raiders), Nnamdi was one of the guys along the line (during pregame intros), clapping his hands for the starters,” Carter said. “Now they announce him last, the place goes crazy, he comes out high-fiving everyone in the Black Hole, he does the little shake.”
Carter demonstrates by rising from his chair to shake his bootie. Asomugha smiles.
Asomugha is low-key, quiet and contained, a bachelor who earned a degree in finance in four years. Carter has the energy of a tent evangelist preaching down the home stretch. He was a teenage dad in the Oakland ghetto who made himself a football player, dancer and then a coach. He and his fiancee are raising five kids.
It’s quickly obvious how Carter and Asomugha connected. Along with a strong mutual respect, they both have a distaste – fear? – of wasting even an ounce of human potential. They are two driven dudes.
You know what Asomugha has done with his once-modest skills. Carter created a football dynasty out of the dust at McClymonds and now is building a powerhouse at Berkeley High. More importantly, his players go to class and many go to college.
“I have a genuine passion for working with kids who are motivated,” Carter said. “I’m passionate about people making it.”
Carter and Asomugha first connected when Nnamdi was 17, a freshman seeking help to get back into shape after breaking an ankle. His dorm roommate knew Carter as a track coach. Asomugha, raised in an L.A. suburb, caught a bus at the Berkeley campus and rode to West Oakland to work out under Carter at McClymonds, a run-down, inner-city school.
They clicked.
“We jelled because we both believe in the grind before the finish line,” Asomugha said.
A friendship developed. Asomugha, whose father died when Nnamdi was 14, was a good player on mostly bad teams at Cal, so coaches tended to treat him with deference. Carter doesn’t make class distinctions; he treated Nnamdi like a McClymonds player. For the first time in Asomugha’s life, a coach would put hands on hips and demand, “What are you doing?”
“I never had anyone deal with me the way he does,” Asomugha said. “It was his way of showing me there’s another level to get to.”
They continued working together between seasons. They would talk after every Cal game. When Asomugha had an injury and the coaches told him he didn’t have to practice, Carter said, “Nnamdi, you’ve got to practice. You don’t want to get a reputation.”
Asomugha doesn’t read the sports pages. Carter clips newspaper articles, especially negative stories, to motivate Asomugha. Carter would point out game mistakes and bad habits that Asomugha’s coaches either didn’t notice or didn’t mention.
During Asomugha’s senior year at Cal, Carter visited Nnamdi’s mother in Southern California. Lillian Asomugha is a pharmacist with four children, three of them with advanced college degrees. At the end of the visit, she pulled Carter aside and told him, “I need you to look after Nnamdi.”
Carter nodded, and Lillian grabbed his arm more firmly.
“You don’t understand,” she said. “You’re the only person I trust. You need to look after him.”
The two men went to work prepping for the combine. Many top players drop out of school to train, but Asomugha kept on course to earn his degree. Asomugha hadn’t lifted weights, he could bench press 225 pounds only three times. Alarms went off. Three reps! The scouts would laugh him out of the combine. He and Carter hit the weight room at the downtown Oakland YMCA.
“It was some of the most random workouts,” Asomugha said. “It was organized madness. We’d drive to a hill in Oakland and run up the hill. Or I’d be on a trampoline with weights in my hands.”
In six weeks, the 6-foot-2 defensive back grew from 198 to 212 pounds, went from three to 17 reps in the bench press, and cut his 40-yard-dash time from 4.48 to 4.36 seconds.
His rise from projected fifth-rounder to first-rounder is now an NFL draft legend. Asomugha told Carter if he ever made the Pro Bowl, he was taking Carter to Hawaii, a promise he later kept.
End of story? Not quite.
For two NFL seasons, Asomugha struggled mightily, thrown into a new position (cornerback) and looked upon as somewhat of a fraud and bust by teammates and coaches. He heard boos from fans. After every game, waiting outside the locker room for Asomugha, was ‘Zo Carter, wearing a No. 21 Raiders’ jersey.
Asomugha was angry, frustrated, embarrassed – a fringe player on a losing team. He often thought about retiring when his five-year contract ended. The only person he could really talk to, and vent to, was Carter. They talked football and more.
“What he does through football,” Asomugha said, “is teach life lessons. Like, every day you have to work.”
Another: Don’t work to meet the standards set by others. Be the standard.
Now Asomugha is the standard for NFL professionalism. He has maintained his low-key sanity – he arrived for lunch Sunday driving the ‘97 Nissan Maxima he got in high school – while becoming the gold standard for cornerbacks.
Carter is still at every Raiders home game, and it cuts both ways.
“All the significant games in my coaching career, he’s been there,” Carter said. “And no announcements. He’s just there on the sidelines in a hoodie; nobody knows it’s him.”
It’s simple, Carter says.
“He’s always been there for me and I’ve always been there for him.”

Actually LMN, its all about player preference. My friend had an xbox 360 and I have the ps3. There are some game on 360 that you can’t beat, and the same for ps3. However, Madden, to me, looks good on both. Depends on how you like your controls and I have heard that the 360 controller is alot easier to play games like Madden then it is on ps3. So, its up to you.

That’s a good story, BSJ. Just goes to show the humbleness and professionalism of Aso. Heck, my first new car was a Lancer Evolution 8 back in 2004. Only because I wanted to know what it was like to have a new car. Doesn’t make a difference to me now. Aso kept that 97 Maxima running this long. My philosophy on that is…run it to it can’t run no more. A car payment is not necessary if you can make the old ones work for you.

I have previously written that the Raiders should acquire Vince Wilfork in a trade for Derrick Burgess. Some thought that the trade would be unbalanced in favor of Oakland.
Well, here’s another scenario.
Carolina still must deal with the Julius Peppers situation and have been hesitant to act.
I realize that multi-team trades are rare in the NFL, but are they impossible? I doubt it. Thus if it fits your need, then why not?
The Raiders could send Derrick Burgess and a fourth-round draft pick to Carolina for Vince Wilfork, whom Carolina would acquire for Julius Peppers from New England.
Bottom line is…the Raiders cannot allow the “rich to get richer” by trading Derrick Burgess for less than he’s worth. The Raiders need more help on defense, and should demand nothing less. Rather than believe the lies within the media that pollute the decisions of the Raider turncoats that are only in the organization to enhance their résumé, the Raiders can make moves to improve their defense.
Thus, the Raiders must receive on-field talent for Derrick Burgess in 2009, particularly defensive tackles, in order to compete with the current players to ensure that the best talent is on the field for 2009.
The point was… Burgess is worth more than his stock, right now. The Raiders cannot trade him for nothing like they did with Randy Moss.
Teams think they can steal Burgess for nothing because his stock is low. The Raiders will make offers they think are reasonable, and the other team will reject it in order to push the price lower. The reality is, the Raiders should shop around or keep Burgess.
The Raiders must demand fair value for Burgess in any trade, or just keep Burgess. Another season with Burgess is better than magic beans.
The questions about Derrick Burgess are utterly false. Burgess dominates at his position, and should be treated like a dominant player — not as a throw-in that you’re trying to unload.
Any attempt to say that Burgess is not a dominant defensive player — is a lie.
The same thing happened with Charles Woodson. The media questioned him until Raider fans did, and the Raiders let him walk.
Now he’s in Green Bay as a dominant corner again. Enough with believing the media hocus pocus around the Raiders.
So unless, the Raiders get fair value at a needed position — then keep Burgess.

Personnel director Rich Snead departed Oakland in much the same way he arrived two years ago, under the radar, in the cover of night and without the Raiders acknowledging the move.
RaiderBeat.com reported in April that Snead was on his way out, perhaps as soon as the conclusion of the NFL Draft. Sure enough, that’s what happened.
Snead and the Raiders parted ways in late April, though the Raiders still haven’t commented on the matter. Finally, on Saturday the Raiders removed Snead’s name from their website.
It’s unclear how much of a role Snead played in personnel matters in the two seasons since he replaced Mike Lombardi after managing general partner Al Davis fired Lombardi.
Snead kept a low profile, never spoke with the media and worked behind the scenes from Day 1 through his into-the-night departure.
A Raiders official confirmed Saturday that Snead no longer is associated with the team, saying the two parties agreed to go their own ways.
Former Raiders assistant coach Keith Rowen has taken on a more prominent role since he arrived last season and that likely played a huge part in Snead calling it quits in Oakland.
Rowen is said to have Davis’ ear more and more each day and playing a pivotal role in the shaping of the roster.

I would prefer Carter stays put and continues to mentor and coach East Bay kids. He is clearly more of a father figure than a trainer per se, and his teaching would probably not do much for most of the newly rich NFL types.
Aso might find a local rookie needing guidance and send him Carter’s way.
May 26th, 2009 at 8:21 am
ALAMEDA – When Virginia’s Eugene Monroe unexpectedly became available to the Raiders at the seventh pick of April’s draft, many followers of this team were delighted. Monroe, strong and technically proficient, projects as a legitimate NFL left tackle.
As you know by now, the Raiders instead went for Maryland wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey.
Coach Tom Cable appeared before the media soon after to laud Heyward-Bey’s athletic excellence. Asked whether the team had considered Monroe, Cable replied: “Not at all. There’s a reason we have Mario Henderson here and Khalif Barnes, Erik Pears, Cornell Green.”
If you find yourself perplexed, or even startled, by that comment, you are not alone.
Henderson and Green were part of an offensive line that allowed 39 sacks last year, ninth most in the NFL, though the Raiders attempted only 421 passes, second fewest in the league.
Barnes was a four-year starter at left tackle in Jacksonville, but isn’t exactly considered a star at the position. He surrendered 7½ sacks a year ago; only six NFL players at his position gave up more. Pears started for the Broncos in 2007 but missed all of last season. Other tackles on the roster include Marcus Johnson, Mark Wilson and James Marten.
In deciding not to take an offensive tackle in the draft, the Raiders are gambling that the guys already here are enough to keep third-year quarterback JaMarcus Russell upright. It’s a crucial factor, since Cable’s offense is expected to rely heavily on deep passes that take a long time to unfold.
Barnes is trusting in a head coach who used to be an offensive line coach.
“He knows what being an offensive lineman’s about,” the San Diego native said. “So he understands about not putting guys in tough situations. He understands about building the offense from inside out. He’s an offensive-line-minded kind of guy, so he’ll understand what you’re going through in third-and-long.”
But short of calling the occasional screen pass or draw, Cable won’t be able to bail out his offensive tackles after the ball is snapped.
Two of them, at least, will have to keep pass rushers off Russell.
Henderson and Green ended the year as the starters – Henderson on the left side, Green on the right – and they have been working with the first-team offensive line at voluntary practices and the Raiders’ one minicamp. That includes the May 20 practice, the most recent one open to media. The lineup has surprised some people.
Henderson made huge strides last year, but no one is really sure he’s agile enough or mean enough to get the job done week in and week out. Green, 33 in August, is a crafty blocker who gets hurt a lot and incurs too many holding and false-start penalties. When the Raiders signed Barnes on March 16, he came with the fanfare of a starter.
“I knew I wouldn’t just come here and they plug me in there right away,” Barnes said. “I don’t think that would happen. … But it’s all about competition. The more competition you have, the better you make your line across the board, and the farther you can go as a team.”
One scenario has the loser of the battle at left tackle – either Henderson or Barnes – moving to the right side and nudging Green into a backup role. Cable has yet to acknowledge this plan, though. And Barnes notes that he hasn’t played right tackle since college.
“No, I don’t expect for me to be on the right side,” he said. “I really haven’t taken a right-handed stance since my last years at Washington.”
Even then, he wasn’t a true right tackle. The Huskies ran a blocking scheme that had Barnes basically playing the weakside. If the tight end was on the right side, Barnes lined up on the left, and vice-versa.
Like most new players, Barnes is focusing largely on terminology this spring. He has played in some zone blocking schemes similar to Cable’s, but the words used to identify plays and blocking assignments are different than what he was accustomed to in Jacksonville. Until he’s comfortable with the language, he’ll be thinking as opposed to reacting, which prevents him from playing full speed.
An example: At the May minicamp, Barnes confused the Raiders’ two audible calls. On one, linemen are supposed to fire out upon the first sound they hear from the quarterback; on the other, the QB resets his cadence. Barnes wound up with two false starts when he should have waited through the cadence.
The former Jaguar is trying to be patient, though he didn’t sign with the Raiders to back up Mario Henderson. Barnes figures he will be up to speed by training camp.
“By that time I’ll be in the offense a little longer, go through OTAs and I’ll know everything longer,” he said. “And I think once I have no gray area, and once I could just fly off the ball and just run and know exactly who I got, I think it’ll be pretty good.”
It had better be. If Cable can’t shape these guys into solid offensive tackles, he may not outlast his four immediate predecessors in Oakland.

RRS, this guy is a lunatic. He expects Carolina to take Burgess and a fourth for Peppers? LMAO.
I would LOVE to add Wilfork, who is probably NE’s best defensive player. But we would have to give them Burgess AND a number one, IMO. Might still be worth it, considering what how Al can gamble with our high picks…
Even better, Al should simply trade down and stockpile 2nd – 6th round picks every year. Thats where his strength is, finding studs in the later rounds.

Exactly BSJ. only a Raider fan would think Burgess has any more trade value than a 4th or 5th round pick. he’s going to be 31 years old, he’s oft injured, he’s disgruntled and he can’t play the run. The Raiders might be the best team in the league at finding SITUATIONAL pass rushers, just not every down players at DE. I doubt Al Davis is asking for Vince Wilfork in exchange though, due to his love affair with Kelly/Warren/Sands … he’s probably asking for Randy Moss back!

Sotomayor stuck it to the MLB owner’s good in `95. On that basis alone, she has my support:
“Also, in 1995, she ordered Major League Baseball owners to restore free-agent bidding, salary arbitration and other terms of the expired collective-bargaining agreement with players, thereby prompting an end to the 232-day baseball strike.”

Keith Rowen = the mysterious local guy?
former tight ends coach with Atlanta, during Cable’s time
former O-line coach with the Raiders under Bugel
former OC under Denny Green
Stanford grad and Frisco native
Sounds like this guy could be Cable’s de facto GM choice, who made some of the personnel decisions during this very abnormal off-season.

BSJ,
The Raiders should jump on the offer of Burgess and a 2010 1st round pick for Vince Wilfork. Good point about 1st round picks and Al Davis. Next years pick will end up being another “skill” position player with a high 40x.
Burgess and the 2010 number 1 for Wilfork…I would jump on that in a nano-second…
Hell, Burgess and the #2 next yr for Ron Brace…..

sounds like it. we’ve had a very impressive offseason imo. DHB & Mitchell were reaches in the draft, but if they produce nobody will care or even remember what happened on draft day. Nnamdi was considered a reach too …
However, Rich Snead is a respected personnel guy in this league. sad to see him go, but if Davis found somebody he trusts from within and that guy makes sound football decisions? no complaints here!

Hi Nation.
SnB what’s up bro?
Somebody posted previously that giving Burgess away for magic beans didn’t make sense, but sometimes the beans work. The fact is Burgess doesn’t want to be here so his value is less to us anyway. I know it sticks in the threoat when you trade away and the guy really plays for the other team, but they were unlike;y to play that hard for the original team. Even if he were to stay, how committed is he? Last year of a contract with one last pay day left in his career? He’d be looking elsewhere anyway. Sometimes you just have to take what you can get. I’ll take anything from 2-5 for Burgess. That IMO is best we could hope for.

Agreed RRS,
If Rowen has been responsible for some of this off-season, then I am happy to have him aboard. A de-facto GM that Al trusts and Cable trusts would be HUGE. Let’s hope that the relationship between these 3 doesn’t sour like most of Al’s business relationships

Burgess is just taking up a roster spot and is getting in the way of younger players who have potential and need playing time to grow and develop into solid NFL starters at DE. not oft-injured situational pass rushers
D-Burg is stealing time away from Scott, Shaughnessy, Gunheim, Sulak & Gray.
Richardson started opposite him and is injured right now. Doesn’t really have an impact on J-Rich …
