Bottom-feeding in the backfield

All I did was wonder whether two quarters of explosive football is enough to anoint Michael Bush as a future star.

At least I didn’t leave him out entirely.

Check out this CNN-SI feature ranking the NFL backfields, Nos. 1 through 32.

The author, John Mullin, ranks the Raiders No. 28 and never mentions Bush. He has Oakland ranked last among AFC West teams and ahead of only Detroit, Cleveland, Seattle and Jacksonville in the NFL.

Must be a hater.

    OAKlifer: regarding the o-line

Satele will have to get healthy first and foremost. Once he’s 100 percent and ready to go he’ll have to “compete” with Wade & Morris for the starting job. Wade & Morris are not quality players, much less starters in this league. If Satele doesn’t win i’ll be shocked. That would be a wasted trade to acquire him from Miami, even if he did come rather cheap.

Carlisle and Green will start at RG & RT again unfortunately. Mark Wilson, Marcus Johnson, John Compas & Morris are all going to “compete” with Carlisle. McQuistan will join them when he gets healthy. I’d be surprised to see any of these guys in the starting line up, even if Cooper isn’t all that impressive. they wouldn’t really be considered upgrades imo

Green will have to fend off Erik Pears and perhaps Khalif Barnes, which might not be that difficult a task considering Pears was out of football last year (injured) and Barnes hasn’t played RT since college. “Mop Handle” is one of Cable’s scholarship players. It will probably take some convincing from Davis, Rowan or the new OL coach (Cable’s buddy) to pry Cornbread out of the starting unit

Can the Raiders win this year?

    1. Teams with strong running games tend to win…even with average/below average QB play. In 2008 the top 15 running attacks won no fewer than 8 games…with the exception of Oakland. This includes teams with QBs such as Jason Campbell, Joe Flacco, Kerry Collins and an old Brett Favre. In 2009 the Oakland running game should be consistent and more effective with a healthy DMAC and more Michael Bush in the backfield. Oh, Lorenzo Neal is another run-blocking o-lineman

    2. Russell will improve. Despite all the rhetoric about Garcia and laziness…this QB was a functional QB down the stretch. The statistics prove it out. He’s getting real coaching for the 1st time in his career and a better playbook. The Raiders need functional…they aren’t a team like Arizona or Indy where the QB is the beginning middle and end

    3. Receivers are better: Miller, Schilens,JLH, DMAC & Bush are better for having another yr under their belt. The Raiders played 13 gms with Curry, Lelie, Walker as starters

    4. The O-Line is better: Is it great…nope…but its better than that b.s from last year…the tackles should be stabalized…again that’s all they need…if they cut down on penalties inside the red-zone…that would be an extra win or two right there

    5. The Broncos and Chiefs are garbage and they are far, far, far worse than last year

    6. The defense can’t be any worse than last year can it? I am hoping they can show some modest improvement.

    7. No one expects the Raiders to be any good. Teams will be overlooking them, it not much but helps. Although the Texans will probably come ready to play

The key to the season is Cable EFFECTIVELY using his running attack and calling a game that keeps Russell and the receiving corps involved in the ball game.

Honestly, I think the run defense is going to get exposed with this schedule. But still, the Raiders should be able to get 8 wins this year.

Is a rookie and a 1 yr guy playing in the secondary going to cause problems or do our corners make up for their youth and inexperince??

    ***

    FS: Eugene/Huff
    SS: Branch/Boyd

that’s what it looks like right now in OTA’s. I imagine it will look much different when training camp and preseason roll around. Mitchell will finish school and Keith Davis will enter the mix. Here’s my question. Will Huff ever get to work with the starters at FS? Will they try Branch with the starters at FS? Will Cable pull the plug on Hiram Eugene, even though he’s one of his favorites? Is Mike Mitchell everything we’ve heard he can be – facing much tougher competition?

as far as starting Branch at FS and Mitchell at SS and their youth & lack of experience. it all depends. if they learn the playbook and get on the same page with the defense I don’t see this being a problem. If there is a breakdown in communication and they start missing assignments resulting in missed tackles or blown coverage it going to look like Schweigert and Gibson out there. We can’t have that. These kids have all the potential in the world, but it’s up to them how much work and effort they put in it. Certainly having 2 shutdown corners makes the safeties job’s easier, but if the front seven can stop the run (again) it won’t matter …

    S&B: nice post #203 !

i’m concerned about the o-line, the WR corps and the run defense like most Raider fans. but I really think this season’s win-loss record hinges upon 2 things

    1. Tom Cable’s leadership & play calling
    2. JaMarcus Russell’s maturity & improvement

    Rockstar,

I think Mike Mitchell and Tyvon Branch will be given every opportunity to win their respective jobs. Branch is a write in at SS. Gibril Wilson was sent packing and no other starting caliber veteran was brought in. Plus Branch is the fastest guy back there.

Hiram Eugene probably gets the start unless Mitchell’s hitting prowess translates to camp.

Regardless, I am not expecting much from the defense this year. They really didn’t do much up front to address the run defense. I hope they can put some modesst improvement in the run defense and that Nnamdi and C.J hold it down on pass defense allowning Scott and whoever is the LDE to get pressure on the QB.

    Rockstar,

I agree with you about playcalling and Russell’s maturity.

I guess I would add that within the context of playcalling, Tom Cable has to get the most out of his running game. Things like staying with a hot running back. For example, against the Giants, pounding Bush or Fargas might not be effective….but if Cable uses DMAC like the Eagles used Westbrook against the Giants…then DMAC maybe gets 80 or 90% of the carries.

In another game, if Bush is ripping up an opponent ala Tampa…keep feeding him the ball.

My biggest concern is how Cable uses that running attack. Even more than Russell. Cable should review film about how the Giants and Panthers use their running backs effectively. I am still scared that when its all said and done…Fargas is starting the 1st QTR and DMAC is the one getting token carries.

    We will see

  • rightnasty

Here’s the curious thing though. Bush refused to switch to FB which is fine, but when did the FB position become such a “step down” for running backs? There have been a lot of great fullbacks who did it all running, blocking, pass catching and were certainly every bit as part of the offense as the halfback. A fullback used right and not just as a blocker gives the offense an extra weapon.

    =======================================================
There are not enough carries to go around. A FB is only going to see 2 or 3 carries and maybe a pass or two…many games the FB won’t see anything. The tailback is going to get the 20 – 30 carries a game because he’s the gamebreaker. A FB is an extra lineman for the most part and in general has a different set of skills than a tailback

agree and disagree. Huff & Branch were both corners in college. Usually college corners are either NFL cornerbacks or free safeties. Huff played his first 2 years at strong safety – big mistake. Branch was a back up strong safety last year behind Wilson. Very few DB’s that are built like a corner can hit like a linebacker. Mike Mitchell can hit like a mack truck. That’s why we drafted him. He’s fast and he can lay wood. Putting a player like Mitchell at FS to play centerfield and ballhawk would make no sense. He needs to be down in the box. He desires physical contact.
Huff or Branch can play FS. Hiram Eugene is a scrub, I’m done talking about him.

thats 8 games we’ll have to win with Russell’s arm. These teams will stuff McFadden, Bush, Fargas or whoever we got back there with 8 men in the box and heavy pressure all game long. These teams will force the Raiders to throw. Russell will have to prove to teams that they need to respect the Raiders passing game, because we were terrible last year. They’ll watch film, look at the stat sheet or roster and know what our game plan is. run, run and then run some more. I’m not saying Russell should throw 30+ passes against these teams, but you need a balanced attack or thier defenses will beat you into submission

Exactly, against these teams, the offensive gameplans will need to be balanced.

Mix up the run with some reverses, some misdirection plays, screens, some posts, outs and deep double move go routes.

The offense needs to use those defenses aggressiveness against them by using mis direction quick wr and rb screens and even use Bush and DMC as passers.

Will Wilfork Show Up For OTAs?

    Posted by Mike Florio (PFT)

The question posed today by Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe already has been answered. The world outside of the Patriots’ organization simply doesn’t know what that answer is.

The Pats had Organized Team Activities on Tuesday and Wednesday. And the team hasn’t said whether defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, who is entering the final year of his contract, participated.

On Thursday at 11:00 a.m. EDT, the Pats will practice again — this time with the media present for at least a portion of the session. And so the media will soon know whether Wilfork is present.

Reiss points out that Wilfork posted a few updates to his Twitter page on Wednesday, at a time when the team otherwise was practicing. So unless Vince had a cell phone tucked where that guy in the remake of The Longest Yard kept his McDonald’s hamburgers, it’s a safe bet that Wilfork wasn’t there.

Wilfork separately has expressed frustration and patience this year regarding his contract status. Either way, there have been no talks.

Because Wilfork was drafted in 2004, he’ll be eligible for unrestricted free agency after the season, even if there’s no salary cap in 2010. Unlike players such as Shawne Merriman and Braylon Edwards, Wilfork will have six years of service after the 2009 season.

    Wilfork for Burgess?

  • SnB Defense

I guess I am concerned that Cable won’t pay attention to the momentum of the game. I could see a situation where Bush is having a good game and Cable inexplicably takes him out and claims some b.s like “change of pace” in the press conference.

As you all can probably tell, I am still nervous about Cable maintaining his biases for certain players on the roster.

DMAC and Bush were relegated to pure backups last year and the QB had to lobby Cable to get DMAC in the game more.

I can’t believe I am saying this…but I hope Al Davis offers suggestions on the playing time for running backs.

    Meeting ended early!

Wilfork for Burgess? I wish. Maybe NE thinks Ron Brace is a cheap, young replacement that can start now? Throw in a 4th round pick and maybe NE makes that deal?

I seriously doubt NE would take that risk. i think they will call Wilfork’s bluff, and he’ll play this coming season and that will give NE time to see if Brace has what it take and then NE will make the right choice…those dirty bastards!
