Wednesday OTA notes
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 at 12:54 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Notes and quotes from Wednesday’s OTA and interview sessions:
– Quarterback JaMarcus Russell had his best day of practice, or at least his best day in the presence of reporters.
In another day heavy with red zone drills, Russell at one point threw four consecutive touchdown passes, including one on a play in the back of the end zone when he broke to his right and found a leaping Marcel Reece against Tyvon Branch in the back of the end zone.
He also had a strike for a touchdown in what the Raiders expect to be a familiar sight, finding Zach Miller in a seam before the defense could react.
“I think earlier coach kind of emphasized giving the guys a chance,” Russell said. “If they give you a chance to put it in the end zone as far as pass rush, you’ve got to put somewhere in that location where they can catch it. Just give them a chance. We can run the ball all day. Once you get inside the 20, we’re going to take shots at the end zone and that’s what we were lacking.
“We’d get down there sometimes and try to run the ball all three downs and had to kick a field goal. If you don’t take a chance at the end zone, how are you going to get there?”
– A cynic would suggest not to read too much into it _ Michael Huff was playing free safety while Hiram Eugene sat out with a back injury. Eugene joined the team on the field late, then after being stretched extensively by the training staff, did not return for team sessions.
– Flashbacks from 2008 training camp _ wide receiver Todd Watkins making some impressive catches, including one touchdown from Russell in a red zone drill.
– Once again the Raiders did very little in terms of throwing the ball downfield, something coach Tom Cable promises will be a big part of the offense. To be fair, the media days seem to be heavy in the red zone, where there are few deep opportunities.
– Overheard from defensive coordinator John Marshall . . . ‘
“Get the hell out of our drill,” Marshall to offensive linemen who had finished their drill session and straggled through a defensive session en route to the other side of the field.
“Run to the ball black shirts, that’s what you do . . . you run,” Marshall exhorting a faster pace during a team session.
“You guys have got to stiffen it up inside too soft, too soft,” Marshall after Michael Bush ran unimpeded through the middle.
– Overheard from passing game coordintator Ted Tollner . . .
“You’ve got to sell that `go’ better,’ ” Tollner to rookie wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey after he telegraphed a red zone route which was broken up by two defenders.
– Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who missed the last OTA, isn’t counting on the defensive philosophy being much different under Marshall.
“We know the game plan, pretty much know how to play,” Asomugha said. “On defense, it’s going to be the same stuff.”
– Asomugha may get his wish and shadow the opposition’s best receiver on occasion, although he reiterated change isn’t going to be a big in terms of scheme with the Oakland defense.
“Yeah, we talked about that, me and Lionel (Washington) whether it’s shadowing or doing what we’ve done, where we’ll double another guy if he goes to a different side, we’ll be open to mixing it up pretty much,” Asomugha said. “It should be a different feel a little bit but it’s kind of going to be what we had last year and the years before.”
– Players aside from Eugene who were limited included wide reciever Chaz Schilens (hamstring) and lineman Paul McQuistan (knee). Those who did not attend because of what Cable termed “personal” business were defensive tackle Terdell Sands, running back Justin Fargas, defensive end Derrick Burgess, quarterback Jeff Garcia, quarterback Andrew Walter, defensive end Jay Richardson and wide receiver Will Franklin.
– Cable seemed to soften his optimism somewhat on the chance that fullback Oren O’Neal would be ready to go by the start of training camp.
“The injury he has needs a lot of work and a lot of time,” Cable said. “He’ll just continue to do what he’s doing, and he’s progressing. The hope is that he’s ready to go when camp comes.”
– Fullback Lorenzo Neal continued to get plenty of work and even caught two passes out of the backfield in which he turned the corner and rumbled up field. While things could change during training camp, the Raiders don’t appear to be employing a lot of lead man-blocking plays within their zone blocking format to integrate Neal’s biggest strength.
– Cable sees OTAs as a time to play it smart.
“The biggest thing I’m judging right now is how they’re picking it up and are we eliminating the mental errors part of it,” Cable said. “The physical part of it, without pads you can’t judge anything that way. What I want to see is the mental errors, the execution mentally, can we get to a high level and sustain it through practice and eliminate mental errors. That’s really what this whole thing is about.
– Speaking of mental errors, defensive tackle Tommy Kelly jumped offsides at least three more times, a recurring theme this offseason. Kelly also has been quick to penetrate when he guesses right, although Cable doesn’t sound enthused about the possibility of having someone who picks up occasional penalties on gambles.
“Tommy’s a good player, and as I talk to the defense every day, the one common thing they keep hearing from me is more discipline, more discipline, so that kind of fits what you’re saying,” Cable said. “Staying onside, not giving up free yards, free plays, that kind of thing.”
– Khalif Barnes was seen getting reps in place of Mario Henderson for the first time with the first team at left tackle, although Cable said it first happened last Wednesday. He said it was simply a matter of evening out reps.
“Read nothing into that, believe me,” Cable said.
– The Raiders report to training camp July 29, with the first practice the following day. Cable said the Raiders were changing up the format, although he was non-specific. There likely won’t be as many night practices, he said. The club is also working on having the 49ers to Napa for a second straight year, the days and times to be determined.
– Quarterback Charlie Frye was on hand, wearing No. 3, but got no work in seven-on-sevens or team drills as Russell and Bruce Gradkowski got all the snaps.
Frye said he is fine with entering into a situation where Russell is the quarterback of the future and Garcia is counted on as the veteran backup.
“I think I’m a competitor. I think competition brings out the best in me,” Frye said. “With what happened in Cleveland, when me and Derek (Anderson) battled, with Brady Quinn, for that one year, I thought it really brought the best out of my game. So I like competition. That’s why you play the game – to have a chance to compete.”

Jerry, David White already twittered all of this info to us! You better get relevant!

JERRY,
Can you find out when Mike Mitchell’s school ends and when he will be out here?
And thanx for the updates!

Good stuff, Jerry.
June 10th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
It sounds to me like Marshall is going to have his hands tied as far as defensive schemes go. We’ll see if Ryan really is a good coordinator now that he is not forced to run The Al’s defense. We don’t know if Marshall is a good D-coordinator yet, the only thing we do know is that The Al isn’t.
June 10th, 2009 at 1:14 pm
Marshall was hired because he runs the same Def. that the Raiders like to run,just more efficiently than bozo Ryan.it has been proven the last 6 years that R.Ryan was a lousy DC.that’s what we know.
June 10th, 2009 at 1:16 pm
Let Er Rip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 10th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
Is it me or do I seem to keep reading about Branch being abused by someone in OTAs.
June 10th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
I wanted Ryan gone since he played Brayton as an OLB.
June 10th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
4eva,
#10, Are we still talking about football?!
June 10th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
if Ryan hadn’t screwed up Brayton,we’d have our run stopping base DE right now.Carolina seems pretty happy with him there.
June 10th, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Mike Mitchel sure is missing out on a lot of reps. The rule that doesn’t allow him to practice till school is out needs to be changed.
June 10th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
Holla4LosT…….
I read somewhere, that Mitchell’s college is done on 6/12.
June 10th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
oh,i’m sorry,Brayton was another player people on here wanted run out of town.

June 10th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Mitchell’s college semester doesn’t end until June 12th? Were they on four day weeks or something? Was the school closed down due to fire for a month? Did they have a two month Christmas break (or should I say Holiday break)?
June 10th, 2009 at 1:28 pm
Brayton played all positions but his true one!! Base End!!
Again, robo is a Genius!!!

i just looked up Marshall’s background.i didn’t realize LBers are his specialty.should make that position interesting this coming year.

June 10th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Dakota,
It’s worse than arguing on behalf of Al for the last 6 years!
June 10th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Dakota,the Raiders played the 3-4 many years when we had Ted Hendricks,just not sure of the years.
June 10th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
The Raiders won that SB with Reggie Kinlaw playing his butt off at Nose Tackle against the Hogs and John Riggins.
Our current D-tackles should watch film of that game over and over
June 10th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
No, I think that happened years earlier when the Al claimed to have invented the 3-4. The 83 Raiders had plenty of depth at both DL and LB. Ted hendricks was one of the OLBs in 83 and he was such a hybrid type, that they could switch back and forth without changing personnel
June 10th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Reggie Kinlaw sacrificed his body to make the 3-4 work, and Millen and Nelson gave him the credit he deserved for all the plays they were able to make when he nuetralized two O lineman every play

=======================================================
See, that’s another example of not having a coherent strategy. Sapp was never a 3-4 NT…why sign him. Its the fantasy football approach.
The Raiders have to get players that fit the scheme. They have been very sketchy in that department. That’s why I am concerned about the Defensive Line. The Raiders always seem to put a premium on the pass rush at the expense of run stoppage. The LDE is a 260 pass rusher…the NT is a one-gap penetrator…physicality is not at the core of the MLB…the lead for the SLB is a speedy ex-safety who gained 20 lbs to get to 230..
June 10th, 2009 at 1:50 pm
The Raiders run a finesse defense that tries to play physical. Hopefully Marshall can reconcile those issues.
June 10th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
I am glad I am not an old fart like you guys, but I am jealous of your fond memories of better times in Oakland Raider history…maybe if I had seen those times I wouldn’t be so ready to throw Al Davis off a building. I’ve just seen 25 years of consistently poor football.
June 10th, 2009 at 1:54 pm
How bad was Rob Ryan? Why was this guy able to so quickly get another DC job. This guy also was a Patriot assistant. I can’t imagine a coach making it with Belicheck if they can’t teach the fundamentals.
Look, I didn’t like Ryan’s playcalling. But its a little much to say the guy couldn’t recognize gap discipline or teach tackling.
The Raider players simply have to play up to their contracts.
June 10th, 2009 at 1:55 pm
Dakota, You’ve finally found something to make me feel good about being an old fart…..at least I can look back on it and say, “I remember when the Raiders were good every year”. Thanks…I think.

I don’t doubt that Ryan was a bad defensive coach.
All I am saying is that if issues such as tackling and gap discipline were not recognized by Rob Ryan and his staff, they wouldn’t be NFL caliber. Maybe its all teaching. But that’s interesting, Davis has no qualms with firing coaches. Why would he stick with Ryan so long?
I don’t doubt that teaching technique and playcalling played a role…but to give the TALENT a free pass is a bit optimistic given the lack of playmaking and the pathetic season ending stats.

Lefty12,
So why would Al Davis stick with Rob Ryan for some 5 or 6 years when he has no issue with firing underperforming coaches?
June 10th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
all of you self proclaimed raiders fans that express desires to have Al Davis killed, or even for him to die of natural causes need to learn to respect your elders, and also to respect greatness. All teams in professional sports go through tough years. You are being ridiculous to expect that things can turn around instantly. Davis is NOT senile, nor is he stupid or crazy. Dont you children have grandparents with capable minds? If not, then it looks bad for your future, because this is a hereditary trait.
Also, everyone attempts to pinpoint what an Al Davis team is built with, or who is an Al Davis type of player etc etc. There is NO SUCH THING. over Davis’ many years in football he has designed numerous different styles of offense and defense. The Raiders are his team, and he will build them into contenders once again. If you have a problem with him, cheer for another team.

RR had restrictions as to what he could and couldnt do on D, we all know that.
The issue I always had is if that is the case, and your playbook is limited, then the certain aspects should improve over the seasons as DC.
Run defense is as basic as it gets and the majority of the time he ran the D, we sucked.
If you cant improve on the things that you are limited to work with, it says all I need to know about the talents he provided to the Raiders.
I wish him all the best with the Browns. It will be interesting to see over the next 2-3 seasons how things work themselves out.

From the Q&A with Cable at today’s OTA.
Q: On letting the QB “air it out”
Cable: “To me you might retard a young guy by trying to be to cautious. So let’s rip it right now as you learn how to do this. It’s good to see him turn it loose. Also it is a great way to find out who can make those plays.” http://www.raiders.com/common/article.aspx?id=64412
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cable, taking a shot at the legendary Lance Kiffin’s playing it “safe” with Russell last year?
June 10th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Ezdub,
Am I right?
June 10th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
one thing is for certain for all of you of the lesser ages, if Bo Jackson would not have freakishly had his hip joint destroyed, you would not be recalling a quarter century without super bowl victories. yes, only one player, but he was PHENOMENAL! after Jim Brown, Bo Jackson is the only player who ever exhibited that power and speed in the same person.
Alas…
June 10th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Ezdub,
I understand the sentiments expressed in post #97.
June 10th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Nnamdi Asomugha didnt become a starter until his third season. I hope for the best but that is what I think will be the case with Mike Mitchell. I am on board with the ‘reason’ for DHB, but I am just not sold on a few unreal highlight clips when you aren’t even an honorable mention in a 3rd tier conference. There are a lot of bad plays that would compensate for a big hits highlight real to not get honorable mention.
If it was because of the work ethic and workout for the team… names like Vernon Davis and the Jets Gholston come to mind.
So do all the people on here that wanted Gholston… lol
June 10th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
It was as if Kiffin was trying purposely to retard Russell.
June 10th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Since Andrew Walter got his brains beat out during the Art Shell catastrophe, the Raiders have brought in at least 7 QBs and sent a clear message to AW that he is not in their future plans. AW wants a fresh start, but for some unexplained reason Davis keeps AW unused and on the self.
Walter has gone from good soldier to indifferent observer. This year he has passed up as many meetings and OTAs as possible. He has done everything but pee in the old man’s Cheerios in an attempt to get his release prior to the start of NFL training camps. Logic would lead to an AW release, but then again, this is the Raiders. Davis will probably hold onto AW until the final cut.
June 10th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
With Walter, we have seen this move time and time again with Al, he will keep him on the roster just to be defiant to the player. Possibly keeping four QBs on the final roster.
June 10th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
M Lonetree….
Bo was the REAL DEAL…..ahhh, what if??
June 10th, 2009 at 3:55 pm
Curious to see what Walter would have become if his O-line would have been made from something stronger than whipped cream.
I wonder if Cable would start Fargas infront of Bo?
June 10th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Of course he would have Stabler76…Fargas is a better pass blocker than Bo was, lmfao…lamest excuse Fargas apologists in here use by far…pass blocking..sheesh.
June 10th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
I thought walter was a great pick in the 3rd, and that he was going to be our QB. That Art year killed him. Look at Carr.
Walter has no excuses. Sure he took a beatdown during Shell2. So what? Peyton, Aikman – they were on crappy teams and ate a lot of turf before things got better. Plunkett was a human tackling dummy in Boston and EssEff before being afforded some time on the Raider bench to recuperate.
David Carr, David Klingler and Tim Rosenbach had the crap kicked out of them on bad teams and they never were able to come out of it at all.
Andrew just has to decide what he wants to do. No excuses.
It would take a small team of guppies days to clean out those ratty old things, and this is underwater in ideal conditions.
The best thing for you to do, ol Krappy, is to keep your head out of the microwave and get in the bath before you hurt your fingers on the keyboard.
How bad was Rob Ryan? Why was this guy able to so quickly get another DC job. This guy also was a Patriot assistant. I can’t imagine a coach making it with Belicheck if they can’t teach the fundamentals.
Look, I didn’t like Ryan’s playcalling. But its a little much to say the guy couldn’t recognize gap discipline or teach tackling.
The Raider players simply have to play up to their contracts.
======================================================
If anything, I’d say it was 40% player mistake and 60% of Ryan’s BS. Anyone remember the first few games of the year when we all blasted Rob for using prevent defense and he came back crying, I don’t run a prevent D. I lost all faith in Ryan from there, he had way too many chances and as a result, well, the stats don’t lie.
The comments about Jamarcus are not encouraging. The guys in here just don’t understand what it is like to be in a fish bowl.
Every move is either a negative or sets off the kind of words that some people feel so comfortable with.
Example:(doughnut, Jubutus,jethro, Lazy, etc..)
I remember when Jamarcus missed a week, we come to find out his Uncle Ray died, who was like a father to him. I remember some comments in here about bling, cruising playing and fooling around and not taking his job serious. The are totally wrong, not one of them has even acknowledged the mistake or even apologized.
How do you defend such stupidity. I guess you just read the comments from the people who are hoping to see the Raiders win again again on a consistent basis.
I am glad I am not an old fart like you guys, but I am jealous of your fond memories of better times in Oakland Raider history…maybe if I had seen those times I wouldn’t be so ready to throw Al Davis off a building. I’ve just seen 25 years of consistently poor football.
——————————————-
This is ridiculous. I am the first to recognize the poor performance the last six years, but prior to this recent stretch, the Raiders were among the NFL elite. Since the Raiders were last in the Super Bowl (2002 season), only 11 other teams out of 32 total have been, with only 4 winners (Patriots x 2, Steelers x 2, Giants and Colts). That’s 20 other teams not even making it to the championship since the Raiders were last there. Now if you go back 25 years, since the Raiders last won a Super Bowl, only 12 out of 32 teams have won a Super Bowl since the Raiders last did it. If you compare the Raiders wins and losses over the years from 1984 to 2002, they stack up with the teams every thinks are so great now…. Better than the Patriots record and only three wins worse that the Steelers record over that same span. Let’s not be ignorant of the facts….the last six years have been bad, which is a couple of years longer than most of the “down” streaks that all teams seem to go through. The Raiders are due and I think are now on the right track to improve significantly.
June 10th, 2009 at 5:16 pm
Maybe I can shed a little light on that Dell. Cable is Jamarcus’ boss. Honestly, that is not an enviable position when a guy makes 10-20 times what you make and you have to boss, errr, “coach” them. Universally, there are very, very, very few bosses on the planet earth that do not want more out of their subordinates in any organization. How many of the people on this blog have had their bosses come up to them and say, “Hey, don’t come in for a few days, you’ve earned it. Roll in whenever you want.” Even if you are performing well, they want more out of you. That’s the role of the “boss”.
There is nothing but overblown hate on Russell. Basically Cable gave constructive criticism about Asomugha as well. Does this mean Asomugha is a loner? No. He is just saying Aso has an area to improve up. Same as Russell. In fact, if you subbed Aso’s name for Russell’s below….the media would have a field day.
On what Asomugha needs to do to get better:
Coach Cable: “Leadership. Leadership is not defined by how much you make or how good you play on Sunday, but what you do the rest of the week, in the offseason, and how people perceive you in terms of your preparation. My guess would be yes. But I am not there, nor am I a member of the team. What I think happened is that Cable’s initial comments, followed by Russell taking time to be with his family mushroomed into all this uber-negative talk.
Everyone wants to see him bust out and for the Raiders to insert journeyman QB here. That way they can again pile on Al Davis etc….and I am not a big fan of Davis’ personnell decisions btw.
Look at the media coverage now. Russell had struggled in one OTA and the NATIONAL media said Garcia is the man. Yet nothing when Russell comes through with a couple of good performances. Granted…its only OTAs.
The Raiders have been an utter disaster the last 6 yrs….they simply aren’t going to get any positive coverage.
June 10th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
Dude,
Certainly….and perhaps it is here. There just seems to be a lot of Al hatred out there and I, for one, am greatful for all the years I had, which a lot of sports fans never get, to see my team consistently in the mix and competitive, including three championships under their belt (this I credit to Al Davis). All the great icons reach the their time to go (Landry, Shula come to mind)…I’m just not totally sure if that time has come yet, but each year it appears that perhaps it is time for Davis to step back. The last six years have been hard to watch, but I like what I’m seeing thus far from Cable and Co….
My point is ALL 2nd year QBs need work on leadership, not just Russell. I guess I just dont see the big media storm you do. Garcia is an established QB and is better than Russell right now. Russell hasnt stepped up yet and its natural for there to be questions as to the Raiders intentions in bringing in Garcia. I agree with most of your thoughts though.
June 10th, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Certainly….and perhaps it is here. There just seems to be a lot of Al hatred out there and I, for one, am greatful for all the years I had, which a lot of sports fans never get, to see my team consistently in the mix and competitive, including three championships under their belt (this I credit to Al Davis).
——————–
This why I said the other day, that Tom Flores is not in the Hall of Fame. The Al Davis “persona” sucks all the credit away.
You never kick anybody’s ass, you are just a pathetic weak Raider Hater with no skills to debate anyone on this blog.
I’ll reply to you, due to your hate for OakGlenn.
First of all, did you see the debate a few months back, if yes than there was no name calling on OG part.
Second of all there is no double standard, this guy Dud has tried to take apart SnB, Raider O and others, no matter what they said it was never good enough for the Dud.
The guy just wants to hate the Raiders, no information of any positive comments comes from him about our team.
I would appreciate you keep your fued with OakGlenn to the both of you and leave me out of it.
I tried to defend you yesterday, maybe it was wrong on my part to help.
“What the fook I want wit a caravan that’s got no fookin’ wheels?”.
Just sayin…
SnB,
Does Russell need to be a better leader? Yes or no.
=======================================================
My guess would be yes. But I am not there, nor am I a member of the team. What I think happened is that Cable’s initial comments, followed by Russell taking time to be with his family mushroomed into all this uber-negative talk.
Everyone wants to see him bust out and for the Raiders to insert journeyman QB here. That way they can again pile on Al Davis etc….and I am not a big fan of Davis’ personnell decisions btw.
Look at the media coverage now. Russell had struggled in one OTA and the NATIONAL media said Garcia is the man. Yet nothing when Russell comes through with a couple of good performances. Granted…its only OTAs.
The Raiders have been an utter disaster the last 6 yrs….they simply aren’t going to get any positive coverage.
^^^^^^
Because the MEDIA is in the spin business they spin things the way they want to.
If Russell was on the Pats or Steelers….BSPN would drool over him like they drool over Brady and Rothlisberger…..LOL
I was one that was critical of Russell after the reports of the last OTA’s, and while “we” may have been overreacting a bit, as well as the media probably, people are missing the point, the bigger picture.
If the Raiders are going to be good, like really good winning playoff games good, our only shot is for Jamarcus to be really good……..every day. That means Wednesday’s in May, and Monday late-night film sessions in week 15, and every-day in between.
With all that being said, sure nice to hear him lighting it up today. 4 straight TD’s, I’ll take it.
However, I don’t think we should say we overreacted. If he doesn’t want the criticism, play better and silence the critics.
I know he played great the last few weeks last year, but our whole franchise hinges on his success and leadership. Were all desperate and beat up from the last few years and NEED some good news, not pics of him with a bigger beer belly than some guys in here and reports of him one-hopping guys during the first camp of the year.
Overreacting, possibly, but certainly an understandable mentality given the last few seasons.
If you are such a great debater you would not limit yourself to only one topic and one team.
Whats is that the first narrow minded debate that only dim witted Raider fans can participate in. Try reading a book sometime you might learn something.
By all accounts, JaMarcus had his best off-season performance in Wednesday’s OTA and he continues to improve while showing more and more emotion on the field. Meanwhile, Jeff Garcia – who was openly campaigning for his job after one workout – was absent from the Alameda facility for the second time in as many weeks. While the reports are Garcia’s absence was excused, it does not change the fact that Russell has attended every OTA and is growing even without his mentor looking over his broad shoulders.
JaMarcus has been a fixture around the team facility this off-season. After Cable’s comments at the owner’s meetings were again confused with controversy, Russell chose to listen to his coach, ignore the media and instead just show up and continue to work.
Young JaMarcus is growing up before the eyes of Raider Nation. He is rising to the challenge issued by his coach.
Jeff Garcia appears unwilling to embrace his role of mentor in June. Come September, when JaMarcus is calling signals and Jeff is on the sidelines wearing a hat and not a helmet, the roles will be obvious to the world. When Russell has a bad moment, the flames will be rekindled and perhaps Garcia will get a chance to play. Just keep in mind that Garcia is living out his final days and Russell is taking his first steps.
Garcia is not a threat, he’s an insurance policy. What he insures is that JaMarcus Russell will have the starting job by proving it instead of simply being promised it.
June 10th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
I’m of a mind too that their is no option other than Russell. He is the man, he is the franchise and he will succeed because he will be given every opportunity to do so and he has the talent.
Exactly right about Garcia’s end and Russell’s beginning.
This is his team and I’m on board with it.
Lets go Russell!
June 10th, 2009 at 11:14 pm
I wanted us to draft JR over CJ, I thought he was a great talent.
CJ is a great talent too, and he will be a great WR. He is very good now, but JR can be one of the great QBs to ever play the game based on talent alone. I can’t think of a better talent at QB in the last 30 years other than Elway. I’m talking about talent only!!
June 10th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
Good night Nation.
June 11th, 2009 at 12:28 am
Vegas Raider, no QB absolutely no QB is great everytime he plays. Your demands are really ridiculous especially for a second year starter.
Maybe if you were a little more realistic you wouldn’t get so frustrated. Common sense should tell you that Russell will have good and bad days at this stage of his career. But your reaction is really consistent with mpost people in here you overreact to everything.
Give this kid a chance and he will reward this organization with many great years of playoffs and YES even SB’s. But he needs to be developed like any other QB at this stage of their careers.
Dakota seems to look for something to criticize instead of undertsanding the kid has started all of ONE year. Leadership cannot be false or fained it muct come from confidence in yourself. He has gain that through reps……….period.
He’ll get better and better the more he plays just like everyone else. The QB position is the toughest position to play in sports and he’s learning the right way. Insight says wise fans will be patient and allow the kid to learn and live up t his great potential which is exactly what I see him doing.
DHB and DMC will accelerate that learning curve with big plays as will JLH, Chaz and ZMiller. And it really bothers me that Raider fans don’t understand this. I’ve always thought that Raider fans were the most astute football fans out there. But this treatment of Russell has changed my thinking greatly. It leaves a lot to be desired in that department.
There are excuses galore for Russell at this point for last years performance. Worst tackles, injured RBs, not legit WRs, 3 Off Coord changes ext ect.
But as Oakland comes on line the next 2 yrs of his career, he’ll have some of those peices in place like our Priest TJ so eloquently said.
We’ve been burned alot lately, but given time and a little more patience, we could have the makings of a truely remarkable offense.
Again, I am only looking at the years from 1983 to 2002. No propaganda, just facts. I already admitted that the last six years are horrible…I just have a problem with the earlier statement that the Raiders have been consistently horrible for the last 25 years. It’s just not true.
__________________________________________
For the record, I said consistently poor, not consistently horrible (and I didn’t exclude the past 6 season like this guy)…hovering around a .500 winning percentage is consistently poor…this is the Raiders we are talking about, we are supposed to measure success by SB victories, but now apologist fans who want to claim we are like any other football team and just making the playoffs a few times should make us happy, lol.
WRONG. JUST WIN SUPER BOWLS BABY!
But a playoff appearance in 2009 or 2010 would seem like a SB victory at this point, that is how low we have dropped, but it wouldn’t make us a successful team once again. We need to get back on top.
The Magic played their best game a few nights back, and the lakers their worst. Yet the lakers lost only by four.
Kobe doesn’t have to many bad games back to back. They will need one win in Orlando, and will take care of business at home.
Someone tell Bynum it’s ok to show up and have a impact.
What do you guys think of the Dems new health care proposal and how they plan on paying for some of it? They want to make your employee health care benefits taxable income. However, they are still going to allow you to get about $11,500 to $13,000 (family plan) in health care benefits before they start taxing you…they think it will generate $400 billion over the next ten years…they need $1.2 to $1.5 trillion to soc1alize our health care system in ten years…
This is a plan once brought up by Bush and McCain, and Obama slammed McCain for suggesting it during the elections…but now that if might further his agenda the Dems are pushing it….
I am more nervous about how they plan on obtaining the remaining $800 billion to $1.1 trillion they still need to implement their social1zation plan…maybe roll back the mortgage payment deductions? Maybe raise capital gains taxes? Maybe reduce the state and local taxes deductions? Maybe steal from people’s 401Ks? maybe pull out of 1raq too early? Maybe scale back the US military?
Dakota, you’ve spent too much time with rpublicans, you’re picking up bad habits.
They want to make your employee health care benefits taxable income.-Is just a lie. The rest smacks of Truthiness:
1. truthiness (noun)
1 : “truth that comes from the gut, not books” (Stephen Colbert, Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” October 2005)
2 : “the quality of preferring concepts or facts one wishes to be true, rather than concepts or facts known to be true” (American Dialect Society, January 2006)
-
There isn’t a ealth Care plan yet but everyone on your “side” thinks they know what it is.
A lie?
By Richard Wolf, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — The biggest tax break in America — tax-free health benefits from employers — could be scaled back to pay for President Obama’s overhaul of the nation’s health care system.
Tax-writing committees in Congress are considering a cap on the tax break, so that higher-income employees or those with generous insurance policies would pay taxes on part of their value. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., who plans to unveil his health care proposal next week, has said he favors limiting the tax break.
