Update: Ellis to sign with Raiders

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, June 15th, 2009 at 9:00 am in Oakland Raiders.

Greg Ellis could be the most recent veteran leader to be added to a youthful Raiders roster, according to AOL’s NFL Fanhouse.

UPDATE: The word I’m getting is the Raiders have been working diligently to bring Ellis aboard and it appears likely he’ll be brought aboard this week and be on hand for this week’s OTA.

Ellis is a respected NFL veteran who fits in with the signings of Jeff Garcia and Lorenzo Neal, a veteran who hopefully not only has something left to offer as a pass rusher but as a leader in a unit which could use that type of presence.

It remains to be seen whether Ellis has anything left or is another Greg Spires, who came to the Raiders in similar circumstances last season but failed to make the 53-man roster.

The Raiders have not confirmed this signing. They have their final OTA starting Tuesday, with media availability on Wednesday.

  2. OAKlifer Says:

well I would like to see the kids earn a spot but Ellis is lightyears better then Spires and has alot left imho. If he were to be healthy that would give us more leverage in the handleing of Burgess.. Who Im on record saying we should keep this is his last chance for a huge payday he will show up big time!!!

  3. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

If Greg Ellis is better against the run than Burgess see you later Derrick !!

    Depth baby!

  5. OAKlifer Says:

    666,

Only if we get fair trade…no moss for gargage deal here!! there was a great post/cloumn the other day about how Raider players are deemed less valuable due to their situation Moss for exsample!! I say no less then a fourth rounder with incentives to move up to a 3rd if he reaches double digit sacks!!! Dont let him walk for free though could you imagine A couple of Stout DE’s against the run then bring in burgess and who ever else to rush the QB….could work wonders for our lackluster Run D!!!!!

The greatest irony: The Laker HOFer becomes synonymous with the Clippers
    888*******************************

Funny some kids dnt even know Elgin played in the Other LA…….only as a clipper!!!
    ——————————-
Last Laker note for a bit, Elgin played for no other NBA team but the Lakers in Mpls and L.A. Never played for the Clippers. Donald Sterling was looking for a name when he moved the Clippers from San Diego to L.A.
Like Babe Ruth wanting to manage the Yankees, Baylor was not qualified to GM Jerry Buss’s best friends team.

  7. Dakota Says:

Thanks Dell for the words on the last thread. I can’t wait for the day that I get to enjoy an Oakland Raiders SB victory; it will be ten times sweeter than what I am feeling right now I am sure.

  8. RaiderMight Says:

I have no problem with this signing (if they didn’t give him the rest of the bank). He should be able to help the rooks come along a bit.

Burgess and his yearly stomach flu are starting to get old. :)

I doubt he makes a huge impact, but if he can be around for the rooks, it would be a good addition.

  9. Luvthynation Says:

With all the transactions that we`ve made at D end through the draft and free agency coupled with the inactivity at all of the OTA`s.This all but spells the end of Burgess`s tenure as an Oakland Raider. Personally I think he is when healthy the best pass rusher that we`ve had since Pat Swilling.I hate to see that production go. Oh well when was the last time Burgess played a full season anyway.

BUT LONG LIVE RAIDERS AND ALL THIER TRADITION!!! something I will never forget and always know!!!!

  12. YoungAmerican Says:

Great signing, I think. I’ve been saying we need some more veteran leadership on the defensive side, and when Ellis was released I was secretly hoping he’d somehow make it to the Raiders. Glad Al got this one done. Having to rely on Jay Richardson and a bunch of younger guys when Burgess doesn’t feel like playing is not a good situation to be in. We paid for our lack of depth on the d-line last year, so hopefully between the young guys and a seasoned veteran we can at least plug a few more holes.

  13. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

Greg Ellis? Wow, run D problem solved!

    Right?!?

  14. raidertay Says:

Here is an interesting write up on Greg Ellis. Sounds like he had a really good year last year….

Ellis was drafted in the first round of the 1998 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys. He had his best season in 2004 in which he had nine sacks, 44 tackles, and one forced fumble.

At the end of the 2005-2006 football season, Ellis stated that he was not sure if he would return to the Dallas Cowboys due to decreased playing time, saying ” “I just think obviously he (Bill Parcells) just feels that I don’t fit into the scheme the way he wants me to fit, or I’m not that guy he’s looking for.” Parcells was changing the Cowboys’ base defense from its traditional 4-3 scheme to the 3-4 scheme for which Parcells was noted; Ellis wasn’t sure he could be productive as a 3-4 defensive end, as at 280 pounds, Ellis didn’t have ideal size to take on stronger, heavier offensive tackles from an inside position. Ellis’ snaps appeared to decrease down the stretch. His 121-game streak as a starter ended December 4 against the New York Giants when he was replaced in the lineup by rookie Chris Canty.

On June 6, 2006 Ellis said he wanted to see a “commitment” from the Cowboys before he fully accepts a new role with the team. After participating in the mandatory three-day mini-camp Ellis skipped the last two days of organized team activity practices (OTA’s).

Ellis became the starting strong side linebacker in Bill Parcell’s 3-4 Defense. Parcells thought that Greg reminded him of Willie McGinest, a former player of Parcells that had made the switch from defensive end to linebacker. Through the first eight games, the transition was successful. Unfortunately, in a game against the Arizona Cardinals on November 12, 2006, Ellis went down with a torn Achilles tendon when pass rushing and missed the remainder of the season. For 2006 season, Ellis had 30 tackles, three forced fumbles, and 4.5 sacks in eight games.

During the 2007 offseason, Ellis created a stir in the Cowboys Training Camp by making it very clear that he wanted to renegotiate his contract to make for more money up front. Despite his complaints about his contract, Ellis has contributed greatly to the Cowboys training camp, taking the young players under his wing and mentoring them while he has been unable to practice.

Ellis returned for their Week 4 game against the St. Louis Rams. Although not a starter, Ellis did have his first quarterback sack in over a year in that game. He finished the season co-leading the Cowboys with 12.5 sacks. His incredible comeback from a possible career-ending injury and his 12.5 sacks were enough to get him the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award. On January 30, 2008, Ellis was voted into the Pro Bowl for the first time as an injury replacement.[1]

Ellis was released on June 2, 2009.

  15. raidertay Says:

Sounds like Ellis prefers to play in a 4-3.

  16. AZ Raider Says:

What a plethra of information here!!!!! how am I going to remember all of this stuf??????

  17. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

Another case of a team not wanting to pay a 30+ yr old vet. We might have gotten ourselves a player.

  18. ottocrat Says:

Hey, as long as they didn’t overpay him, I think it’s a good signing.

  19. Luvthynation Says:

Ellis had 8 sacks in 08 and 12.5 sacks in 07. 20.5 sacks in 29 games means that this was a good signing.

  20. Luvthynation Says:

Now if we could have Burgess on one side and Ellis on the other for a full season now that would be awesome and of course a miracle.

  21. OAKlifer Says:

  34. dhitz71 Says:

Raiders need to go either 2-1 to start the season for us to have a chance. We need to block better need our WR to get open. Thats was a major problemo last year. Defense….get your charmin middle together so we can stop the run ala Tackles…Kelly and Sands…Our LB’s are pro bowlers if you can stop the run. But those guys OLAY defenders let the LB get RB coming at them full speed.

1 more year till FA. But with the Chinese influx of money and LJ’s China connections it is probable he resigns in Cleveland. Especially if they get Shaq, Even at 38, he greatly improves their center play over 2+ rpg Ben Wallace.

  54. OAKlifer Says:

I would like to think the Raiders are doing some of the image rebuilding the Blazers had to do the last few years!! And it has worked wonders in P-town lets hope the results are the same here in the Bay!! Getting rid of all the me first, Win first, Stat First guys, who smoke d0pe and punch teammates in the face!!!! and getting guys like Brandon Roy, and DHB/M&M to help make our teams better and when we need vetran presence we dnt run out and grab TO or Plax or Vick we bring in guys like Neal and Ellis…Wheras last year it was G Wilson and Hall!!! we all see how that works!!!GOOD WORK UNCLEW AL!!!!

——comment was from Marcus from PA
“Jerry, you have covered the Raiders for a number of years, what is the difference this off-season compared to the others that would give us hope that the Raiders are turning things around. How is Cable camp different from the others? ”
2:06 jerrymac: It’s not the Cable camp so much as the fact that they strayed from adding big names who were really the failures of other teams and instead are working on developing their own young players. That, combined with an out-of-nowhere final two games when it looked as if they were done for, make the beginning of this season much more interesting.

  112. BAG Says:

    BAG=(Big AL’s GOON)

Ellis is a decent player. 8 sacks is more production than we had last year from any D-line position, hate all you want. However, only because of the philosophy in which has been in effect for several years now, Ellis is too old for this team. D.Burgess is now too old for this team, thus the attempts to trade him. Walker, Warren and a couple other players near or at 30 will be either retained for maybe a 1 year, cut or traded either this year or next. With that said, Ellis will be around depending on how well the 20 somethings do.

-Who will make football interesting? Buss!!

    Later STR.

  119. Dakota Says:

    Hey Bo,

If Phil retires (which I seriously doubt) who would you want to see replace him? Rambis? Shaw? Clemons? Jerry Sloan? Pat Riley? lol

I heard Rambis turned down the Sactown job for the chance to someday coach the Lakers. hmmm

  120. priesttj Says:

Funny how they like what’s being done, yet the one doing it is too old to do it. Ellis should help, I’d be very surprised if he doesn’t.

SnB, will get angry at this because he’s not a DT when actually it should be further eveidence as to the coaches thinking that the present situation at DT good enough to win with at least. Or that the available talent isn’t capable of improving that position.

This defense is gearing up to get after the passer something we just haven’t done well lately. Stopping the run is first and foremost to playing defense but you get off the field and win big by getting to the QB.

  121. BAG Says:

    BAG=(Big AL’s GOON)

So if we (Raider Fans) do nothing but take jabs at our own owner for anything and everything can we really blame fans of other teams when they do it? AL Davis and the Raiders are not to the NFL what Jerry Buss and the Lakers are to the NBA. The Lakers are an NBA life line. Without the Lakers being good the NBA suffers greatly. The same doesn’t hold true outside of Raider Nation. Of course we all feel that the NFL isn’t the same without a great Raider team, but that’s about it.

  122. priesttj Says:

BAG, age isn’t the issue, talent is. If he can play he stays, if not he wont.

  123. BAG Says:

Age is the major issue. “If” Ellis was the same player with the same stats, problems and injuries but 26 or 27 he would be a shoe in to not only make the team but to start. Not the case here. Ellis is too old but he was best DE/rusher available and the group we have is not spectacular.

  124. Dakota Says:

    BAG,

I was just kidding about Buss and the Raiders…although Jerry Buss has won many more titles than Al, Al is working in a much tougher league to win in…in the NBA you just need to find one or two great players and surround them with a solid supporting cast, whereas in the NFL you need to be solid throughout a 53 man roster to win a SB. All those NBA championships are more impressive than Al’s 3 SB wins, but Al has had much more to do with the Raiders winning back in the day than Jerry Buss ever had to do with the Lakers winning. But Buss just did what Al needs to do these days…hired people that know what they are doing to run the franchise and just sit back and enjoy the show.

  125. OAKlifer Says:

  126. Dakota Says:

Too bad Al can’t find a GM that he can teach and then let him go out and cut his teeth during the next few years in order for the franchise to be ready for the eventual time when Al is gone and Mark is in charge…although Al’s hiring ability remains sketchy at best, so may be Mark hiring the GM with the guidance of Madden might be a better situation?

    I don’t know…damn.

  127. BAG Says:

    BAG=(Big AL’s GOON)

Remember Kalimba Edwards the FA pick-up from last year? Well he and everyone’s new favorite toy (for the moment) T.Scott had virtually the same stats (K.Edwards stats were better) except one player turned 29 in December and was cut at the end of the year. Guess who? Age isn’t the issue? Under this new philosophy age is the new major issue.

  128. priesttj Says:

BAG, the talent level of those two players was wide. K Edwards was no where near as skilled as T Scott. It had zero to do with age. Trust me.

T Scott IMO is as skilled a pass rusher as there was in the draft. How he lasted until the 6th rnd is inexplicable.

  129. BAG Says:

    ——————————————————-

I totally agree and I’ll take you one further, if you really look at how things are being run such as rebuild not reload, young players versus old veterans, drafting a QB #1, etc., it appears that Big AL has released more control than people think.

Cleamons would be good, as they need to stick with the triangle for the remainder of Kobe’s prime. But I think Phil will be back. He loves driving when he has the fastest car…

  131. Dakota Says:

Trevor Scott had two good games last season. Let’s crown his ass.

  132. KoolKell Says:

T Scott IMO is as skilled a pass rusher as there was in the draft. How he lasted until the 6th rnd is inexplicable.

    BHP, Really?

  133. priesttj Says:

The best players on this team are too young including Nnamdi. This team IMO is in desparate need of vet leadership, they just don’t know how to win.

They may learn in time but last year should’ve been a 8 – 10 win year and we won 5 games due to leadership issues.

  134. priesttj Says:

KK REALLY!! when you watch T Scott and the great pass rusher you see the same technigue. Edwards had one move and if he didn’t win he couldn’t counter. This kid Scott has a tremendous array of moves.

    ——————————————————-

It’s June and I am a die-hard Raider fan so I will not say what T. Scott is not because I HOPE that he becomes an unstoppable beast. However just take alittle peek at K.Edwards stats after 14 games last year and T.Scott after 16 games. Also remember T.Scott was a 6th round pick out of Buffalo. Not exactly a football powerhouse. Age seemed to be a glaring factor. Nevertheless, I hope you are right and T.Scott has a pro-bowl season.

  138. KoolKell Says:

I don’t know Priest, I don’t think the Raiders need any “Vets” to teach them how to win. I think the youngsters are building their own core. Russell & Dmac will run the house.

  139. blackdeath29 Says:

from the de position t.scott has a very good hard inside rush.you don`t see that move from de enough.charles haley was the best at it.scott reminds me of him.

  140. priesttj Says:

Why is it that you people have to act like babies? No one is anointing the kid the greatest ever, I’m simply saying his game is much more skilled than K Edwards.

But I will say T Scott IMHO is as skilled a pass rusher as we have. However I haven’t seen Ellis up close.

  141. priesttj Says:

Blackdeath29, You took the words out of my mouth Charles and Scott are very similar. Rangy, explosive and very skilled.

  142. blackdeath29 Says:

let`s just hope scott can be as good as haley.

  143. priesttj Says:

KK you might be right and I tend to agree, but I’m saying last year we should’ve won more games. A lack of leadership hurt us badly. Nnamdi and others should’ve been able to stem the tide and they weren’t.

There game is similar KK in style and athleticism

The problem was the Davis/Kiffin fiasco.

    The DeAngelo Hall fiasco.

The Mike Bush to Fullback fiasco

Slamming Justin Fargas up the middle 3 straight times playcalling fiasco.

    The Kwame Harris fiasco.

The Javon Hall Ronal Curry fiasco.

Dakota, very few peple realize what type of athlete Wilt was. They know about Bo Jackson. But Wilt was an incredibly gifted athlete for a man that large.

  154. blackdeath29 Says:

kirk morrison and thomas howard are both on chronicle live tonite.

  155. Dakota Says:

Wilt was unbelievable. As a Lakers’ fan I always laughed when people compared Shaq to Wilt. They claim Shaq would have killed Wilt. I don’t think so. If they were both 22 years old and Wilt had the same access to the training and lifting equipment Shaq had, Wilt would have dominated him.

Doesn’t Wilt hold 50 NBA records? Jordan holds, like two, lol. They had to change the rules to make it fair for teams to even compete with Wilt. I think Gretzky might be the only other star that might compare to Wilt as far as records are concerned.

  156. Dakota Says:

My dad watched Wilt play with the Globetrotters in the time when he wasn’t eligible for the NBA, lol. That dude did everything! Including an Oscar worthy performance as Bombaata in Conan the Destroyer!

Kareem’s work in Airplane was much better than Wilt’s in Conan, lol.

  157. priesttj Says:

That’s because what Kareem said was funny as hell. Everyone knew why he said it and it was his first time being open to some people.

  159. M Lonetree Says:

I would have to say that I agree with KoolKell when he wrote that the Raiders don’t really need a bunch of vets to lead them. The Silver and Black are transitioned to a young load of talent. An occasional veteran player may teach a few tricks and show how things may be in the NFL, but the true leadership on this squad must come from the players already in the house.
Greg Ellis. As with all the other present cowgirls, zero playoff wins. Could be a help. Could be a hindrance. Nothing to get excited about.

You’re missing Clyde and Dr. J

  161. Random Drug Tester Says:

should have room for Pistol Pete as well

  162. vegas raider Says:

Wasn’t Wilt like 1-8 in the NBA finals with a few series ending stinkers? And what type of center never fouled out of a game? One that was more worried about that stupid trivial stat than winning. Definately one of the top 10 of all-time, better than Shaq, but Russell is the greatest, and next is Kareem (who got the better half of Wilt when they played in the finals I believe, when Kareem was still Lew and Wilt was in his prime). My two cents.

And I think we would all be happy if Trevor Scott turned out to be HALF as good as Haley. That would be roughly 50 career sacks, a couple pro-bowls and Super Bowl rings.

  163. vegas raider Says:
