Ellis signed . . . officially

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 at 8:43 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Now that the Raiders.com has actually put it on their transactions page, we can assume defensive end Greg Ellis is aboard as a free agent.

Actually, it was certain last night when CEO Amy Trask confirmed to Associated Press that Ellis was indeed signed.

Aside from the fact that A.P. got actual confirmation rather than someone from Bay Area News Group East-Bay, this was good news. Trask, to my knowledge, had never gone on record with a player signing before. And given that her record at responding to messages is somewhere approaching 100 percent, this was a good thing.

Alas, my understanding is this was a one-and-done confirmation . . . too bad.

Hopefully, Ellis will be available for interviews Wednesday. I remember him being an impressive, straight-forward veteran when the Cowboys trained at San Jose State a few years back when playing the 49ers and Raiders back-to-back.

    Couple of things:

    1. The Raiders should have moved Sands to the Giants when they had the chance. Regardless, he is on the hot seat going into training camp. If a Wilfork trade can be arranged….just do it! Burgess, Fargas and a #1. At this point Burgess and Fargas are depth guys who are easily replaced and the #1 pick would put the deal over the top for New England.

    2. The offense will be much improved. If they play consistently they will be a 20 to 24 point offense. Russell, Chaz Schilens, Gallery, Henderson, JLH, Miller, DMAC and Bush will be the guys that will lead. DHB and Murphy may or may not contribute much. Right now, I see DHB as a 2 or 3 catch a game guy who might pull down a long haul once every few games. It is going to take time for him to adjust to the NFL game.

    3. Defense: Regardless of whether you think the DTs, DEs or LBs are the culprit for the run defense, the bottom line is that precious little was done to change the personnell. So the guys in the front 7 simply have to play better. This is NOT a physical team. If the opponent decides to run at them….they will be successfull. The key for the Raider defense is for the offense to score some points and force the pass. This team cannot be expected to stop the run. The defense is not built that way…its a finesse….Indy Colts type of defense that doesn’t play zone.

    morning all,

    yes, condolences Rockstar.

    Oaklifer,

your presuppositions for Zach, Russ and DMc are fine (if Dakota is correct in assuming you meant % rather than rating), but is always back to your mantra “O-LINE in ’09″

    Dakota,

if Janklow had run over a Floridian rather than a Minnesotan would his sentence have been 75% reduced?

    BHP,

wow, sorry I missed that telecast with Davidson and Keating. Too bad Birdie and Ike couldn’t have been there.

    SnB,

I just can’t understand that fascination with Sands. He is the 3rd string DT, yet he is talked about more than the starters. He showed in shape this offseason, yet he is still hated upon.

Look, the guy is in shape, so whose to say that he won’t beat out Warren at NT? If the guy plays like he did in 2006, the last time he was in shape by the way, he is the perfect body to put next to Kelly, RIGHT?

But it’s all moot b/c he won’t beat out the 6’4 330lb beast Gerrard Warren. I think someo of you forget how big this guy is when youo keep talking about he’s a 3 tech, or can’t play next to Kelly.

Not at all. Burgess and Fargas have limited trade value. Burgess might be worth a 3rd or 4th round pick. Fargas, at 29 yrs old, no breakaway speed and limited pass catching ability is maybe worth a 4th or 5th if there was an injury. Vince Wilfork is a pro-bowl caliber NT. Those are very hard to come by. The Raiders couldn’t do any better if they used the pick next year anyway.

Do we really need Taylor Mays?

Let’s see why don’t we trade Russell, DMC and ZMiller for Wilfork? ……………get over it.

DAVIE, Fla. — What’s the best thing about the Miami Dolphins to new center Jake Grove?

Center Jake Grove says he’s looking forward to a fresh start with the Dolphins.

    They’re not the Oakland Raiders.

“I’m excited for a fresh start here,” Grove replied when I asked him how much difference there was between the clubs.

Grove then paused and thought before adding, “I would just say the offensive minds that we have here, the coordinator and the coaches and the ability Chad Pennington has to run the offense, that’s what I’m most excited about.”

In Grove’s five seasons with the Raiders, they went through four head coaches and three offensive coordinators.

Quarterbacks? Oh, Grove saw a few of those in his time there. Rich Gannon, Kerry Collins, Marques Tuiasosopo, Aaron Brooks, Kevin Walter, Daunte Culpepper, Josh McCown and JaMarcus Russell all started.

“There’s just so much turnover in Oakland,” Grove said. “The stability that I feel here, I’m real excited about that.”

Grove was Miami’s top offseason acquisition. Football operations boss Bill Parcells and head coach Tony Sparano considered their previous center, Samson Satele, a liability in the run game and not physical enough against 3-4 nose tackles.

Football analyst KC Joyner graded Satele at a pedestrian 79.5 percent success rate on point-of-attack run blocks last year. It was the worst rate of any Dolphins regular. Joyner determined Grove’s success rate was 90.6 percent.

“I like his aggressiveness,” running back Ricky Williams told the Palm Beach Post reporter Edgar Thompson. “He jumps those nose guards. It’s nice because that’s where everything starts.”

The Dolphins loved what they saw of Grove on film. Although he didn’t play against them, AFC West teams played their AFC East counterparts last year. He did well against 3-4 defenses.

The Raiders ran for 153 yards in a victory over the New York Jets. The Raiders were down 21-0 in the first quarter to the New England Patriots but still rushed for 116 yards in a loss.

“I think he is a tough, physical competitor,” Sparano said. “He displays outstanding first-step quickness and the ability to play at the second level very, very well. With centers I think that is an important quality to have, playing at the second level and being able to get their hat on some of these mike linebackers in this league.”

Grove has missed 26 games since he was a second-round draft pick in 2004. Early in his second season he suffered a right knee injury. He underwent surgery, but the knee kept troubling him. He opted for microfracture surgery after starting two games in 2007.

But the Dolphins gave Grove a five-year, $29 million contract. He knows that’s a lot to live up to.

“When I was a younger guy in Oakland,” said Grove, “I always said ‘It doesn’t matter what guys get paid. This guy could be making $100 million. He could be making $200,000. Anybody can make you look bad. Anybody can beat you on any play.’

“It doesn’t matter what people think about you in this league. You have to bring it every single day.”

I asked Grove if it was flattering to be courted by Parcells and Sparano, a couple of grunts who treasure offensive linemen like car aficionados behold Corvettes.

“Funny you should word the use flattery,” Grove deadpanned on a 90-degree Sunday afternoon. “After the first warm-up of the first practice when I was out here in this heat I was, like, ‘Man, this honeymoon is over. It’s time to work.’”

    V.Wilfolk would be a temporary fix,imo and not worth a #1

  • jhill

Your second point about the offense being much improved is dead on …

Just don’t see how a lot of you don’t see how that is going to REALLY help out the defense overall.

  • jhill

    SnB,

Your 3rd point is wrong, Sir!

If I were an offensive coordinator opposing Derrick Burgess I would simply tell my running backs, “See that guy (Burgess)? Just run his direction ’cause he will neither tackle you nor get in your way. You’ll be at the second level before you know it.”

  • SnB Defense

    JHIll,

I am tired of waiting for some of these “great playahs” to show their promise. Terdell Sands can stay or go for all I care. As part of a rotation the guy might be serviceable if he steps his game up. Problem is, the defense is chock full of serviceable guys. They need another playmaking player on the field. A guy that is knocking on the door of pro-bowl caliber play.

BTW, Sands, Warren and Kelly are each in the top 25% of highest paid DTs…..Warren and Kelly in the top 10%. Do you see any of them playing at the level of a Pat Williams, Albert Haynesworth, Tommy Harris or Sean Rogers? No they don’t. The Raider DTs are very middling average to below average players that rarely make a difference.

You can probably make the same argument for the linebacking corps. Nothing was done there either.

I hope Marshall can put a scheme together that fits this personnel group and get them to play at a higher level. But I am not completely convinced that’s going to happen

  • holla4LosT

    Wow,

Satele can’t play against a 3-4 and our division all use the 3-4???

  • priesttj

Hell I watched the Miami game again lately and they ra the ball pretty well. Just dominated the Pat’s with the great VINCE WILFORK. But against us they were just decent nothing out of sorts. We did give up some plays but nothing earth shattering.

They ripped the Pat’s apart. The Pat’s defense with Wilfork wasn’t some tremendous defense it was good not great. So he’s supposed to come here and transform our defense into the ’85 Bears.

    Give me a break!!

  • Raider-405

I am sure it has been discussed but I didnt see it…. Anyone watch the season finale of Joes vs. Pros?

Timmy…. you validated the reason why you didnt see much of the field in season 16 and 17.

Sad to say but he looked like crap.
    Gannon looked okay.

  • SnB Defense

    Priesttj,

New England is up against the cap. Thanks to the ridiculous contracts paid to guys like Stafford, Sanchez, Ryan, Matt CAssel and yes, even Russell….Tom Brady is going to demand a pretty nice premium wage. They will also have to deal with paying Seymour, Mankins and have to still deal with Moss and Welker’s paychecks.

So they are trying to prioritize their payroll. They drafted Ron Brace in the hopes that he can develop into a good enough player to lessen the sting of losing Wilfork…should that become necessary.

    Odom or Ariza?
    ______________________

Easy….Odom, even though he drives me crazy, he is still way more talented than Ariza. Ariza may be a one-hit wonder like Sasha was last year. Odom has been good his entire career and is only 29. I think we can pick up a defensive SF if we lose Ariza (Artest?), but I don’t think we could replace Odom’s ability to rebound and his interior passing skills when playing PF with Gasol or Bynum at C.

I think if Odom re-signs for $7-8 million we will be able to keep Ariza too. But, Buss can be a cheap bastard sometimes too.

I would love to see Kobe opt-out and then re-sign for less money so the Lakers can re-sign Ariza, Odom and maybe add another piece. That would complete is transformation from team pariah to team player.

Finding a way to drop one of the following contracts would help too: Sasha’s, Walton’s or Morrison’s.

Talk about certain players all you want, but the true issue is Cable and Marshall play calling.

    Plain and Simple!

There is no doubting thaat they both have a lot of talent to work with. But will they put the right players on the field, and call the right plays to make our team effective?

I think the one thing that this team needs is a winning coaching staff. I have a feeling Cable MIGHT be the guy, but in case he’s not, Al better open up that checkbook and pay Cowher, Dungy, or Gruden $5 million a year to coach this team.

    JHill,

Shaughnessy was the only addition that might help with the run defense. But its very questionable right now whether he is an upgrade to Jay Richardson. Have to wait for camp.

As for LB they did nothing. Slade Norris, Stryker Sulak and Franz Joseph will be fortunate to get a practice squad position.

Unless there is an out of the box performance in training camp….the front 7 will be the same as last year with Richardson, Scott and Ellis getting time depending on down and distance and Burgess getting his usual start.

You are reaching, because your unhappy with what the coaches have decided. Do you think the the Raiders wuld give up ZMiler for cap room?

OK the Pat’s have a rookie in RON BRACE so they’ll move what you say is a dominant DT for a ROOKIE…………..you are losing it……….and you need to stop and understand that the coaches have what they want. There is no way the Pat’s would give up on a great talent for an unknown ROOKIE…………period

I don’t think anyone would rate the Raider D-Line in the top 3/4ths of the league. Vince Wilfork would be a nice addition to the D-Line. Anyway, the conversation is moot.

Like you said, the coaches believe the existing talent on the roster and are going to coach them up. I just can’t get too excited about this defense and quite frankly…nothing is going to change that until that Monday Night in September.

As for the offense….I am very excited about their potential
