Ellis signed . . . officially

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, June 16th, 2009 at 8:43 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Now that the Raiders.com has actually put it on their transactions page, we can assume defensive end Greg Ellis is aboard as a free agent.

Actually, it was certain last night when CEO Amy Trask confirmed to Associated Press that Ellis was indeed signed.

Aside from the fact that A.P. got actual confirmation rather than someone from Bay Area News Group East-Bay, this was good news. Trask, to my knowledge, had never gone on record with a player signing before. And given that her record at responding to messages is somewhere approaching 100 percent, this was a good thing.

Alas, my understanding is this was a one-and-done confirmation . . . too bad.

Hopefully, Ellis will be available for interviews Wednesday. I remember him being an impressive, straight-forward veteran when the Cowboys trained at San Jose State a few years back when playing the 49ers and Raiders back-to-back.

No, not agendas just discussing a topic. I like the Raiders…but I am not going to just sit here and pretend that things are going to go from worst to first with the wave of a magic wand.

Suggesting that this defense doesn’t need an upgrade in talent at some spots to me is optimistic at its highest levels. But then again a new coach can make a difference. But I am not expecting this defense to improve too much from last year. You have basically the same talent. The pass defense will be much improved with C.J, Aso and Tyvon Branch. Mitchell and Eugene are question marks….

Anyway…..the blog is to discuss all things Raiders. I have BIG concerns about the run defense. Others are unsure about Russell…some are skeptical about Cable….When a team is coming off a 5-11 and has had successive years like that….I think people have a right to constructively discuss various positions on this team.

    Holla4,

Jakes are a dime a dozen, but there ain’t many Samsons. :)

  • SnB Defense

    Priesttj,

Jake Grove is another example of a salary cap decision. Cable wanted him back for sure…but not at the price he was asking. I am sure that the salary cap math is entering into Belicheck’s decision on Wilfork. Therefore, he is planning ahead by drafting Ron Brace and seeing if he can develop and be ready to go by next season….Thus allowing Wilfork to move on.

It happens all the time. The smart teams just plan for it!

SnB are you smoking somethin’? NO ONE and I mean NO ONE gives up great players for some cap consideration.

You are reaching, because your unhappy with what the coaches have decided. Do you think the the Raiders wuld give up ZMiler for cap room?

OK the Pat’s have a rookie in RON BRACE so they’ll move what you say is a dominant DT for a ROOKIE…………..you are losing it……….and you need to stop and understand that the coaches have what they want. There is no way the Pat’s would give up on a great talent for an unknown ROOKIE…………period

    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Priest, didn’t the coaches “have what they want” at DE too? And then got Ellis? You have to come down from the ledge and admit Wilfork would be a great addition to our team if we could get him. Then the coaches would have MORE of what they want: competition……PERIOD x 2.

I hate to say it, but with the pieces that the Pats added to their team they are poised to be better than their 2007 team, maybe not in wins and losses, but they are going to be a better overall team and they will win another SB if the injury bug doesn’t get them.

    #201 – Good post.

  • SnB Defense

I am more disappointed that the Raiders didn’t bring in a lot of competition at the DT, MLB and SLB positions. Everyone is raving about how Jeff Garcia, Khalif Barnes are bringing healthy competition to their respective positions and how the receiving battle will be intense….but there is precious little competition at the positions I mentioned above.

Sands/Warren/Kelly/Morrison/Brown have little meaningful competition. Who’s pushing them?

Run defense is about 11 guys, not 1 or 2, right?

I think that is why most of us understand how Ryan was ineffective. Be it his playcalling, or personnel decisions, there were just too many instances of fundamental breakdowns from various positions.

Was it Kirk not knowing the plays and not being able to get his guys lined up correctly? If so, why wasn’t he replaced?

Burgess not getting the job done against the run? Why not play someone else on 1st and 2nd down?

4 WRs on the field, and Howard and Morrison both stay on the field?

There were just so many times that we were beaten before the ball was even snapped. Same thing can be said on the other side of the ball. I formation run left on 1st with Fargas, run up the middle on 2nd, look for Miller on 3rd down.

    Right or wrong?

    It’s on the coaches SnB!

Perhaps by midseason, but I expect Brady to have some rust at first. Also, losing an important asst. coach may take its toll. We all remember how bad the defense became after they lost Rob Ryan (LOL, ours not theirs).

yep I thought we needed help more at DT,but the organization thought it was our DE’s and so did Jhill,he was the one that knew what they were seeing because he saw it 2.Now we all get 2 see it in Sept.

The Shaughnessy kid is the only one that has the potential to be an every down DE. The rest of the additions were situational pass rushers.

Hopefully Scott bulked up enough to be able to be a 3 down DE.

  • Als saggy lower jaw

first we bring in a WR that cant catch… on a team desperate for hands… then we bring in what, 9-10 DE’s when we need a DT… we are still 4-3 yes? AL Davis needs to fade away!!

  • CantstandtheHaters

Samson played with a torn tendon in his shoulder and naturally should be better this, in only his third, season. thanks Billy Peeee!!!! and good lluck with Grove youll need it.

    ======================================================
Agreed! That is the reason for optimism. Contrary to what others may think….I like the potential of Marshall to come in and get the defense better. At least his background is mostly in the 4-3…unlike Rob Ryan who is a 34 coach

  • jhill

We just slightly disagree on the talent here, SnB.

To answer your ?, I really hope Brown “pushes” Morrison right off the roster, and the bulked up Alston starts at OLB. Brown is much more physical than Morrison, and doesn’t look like he “thinks” as much as he just reacts and flows to the ball.

I hope Sands pushes Warren, now that he is in shape. I hope Joseph and Boschetti push Sands. The fact that we have 5 DTs instead of 3 this year makes all the difference in the world.

  • Als saggy lower jaw

Brown and Alston are week…. not starters anywhere but here..

  • 4evaRaider

The 3-4 OLB will presumably move to 4-3 DE, putting the pressure on Derrick Burgess to fight for his snaps … assuming he’s around by camp.

    Florida Pete,

why, BJ and Brace are going to stop the run. Check that…Stryker and Slade perhaps?

  • jhill

    —————————————————-

I’m still not convinced we won’t see some 3-4 this year. Morrison and Brown in the middle with Alston and Howard on the outside.

Regardless, last year it was Burgess, Richardson, and Edwards getting most of the run at DE.

This year, it will be Scott, Gunhiem, Ellis, and Shaugnessy. I call that change over for sure at DE.

  • Als saggy lower jaw

we Raider fans always have to hope the lame ducks A.Davis drafts and brings in work out. it’s always “potential”.. why not just one year bring in the players everyone agrees on? maybe bring in players for positions we actually need!!

  • holla4LosT

    #215 – Desmond Bryant and Frantz Joseph…

  • Als saggy lower jaw

of al the DE’s we brought in only Ellis will play or be effective this year.. and we will cut several quality draft pix because we have too many DE’s…

  • http://www.blogcdn.com/www.fanhouse.com/media/2008/04/desmond-howard-425-sm.jpg Bo Schembechler Jackson

Any scout that thinks Grove is dominant against 3-4 nose tackles needs to rewind their tape. That was Newberry they were watching.

Even when healthy Grove usually gets trucked like Adam Treu.

  • Als saggy lower jaw

our 7 De’s weighing 245lbs dont fit our system… but Al has projects so weeeeeee!!! no stopping the run yeay!!

Is Ellis a LDE or a RDE?

  • holla4LosT

    Saggy Jaw,

2007 draft – Russell, Miller, Higgins, Henderson, Bush, Oneal, Richardson…

    Not so bad.

  • Als saggy lower jaw

and this means we’ll be Starting Richarson or Scott and trading Burgess.. again trading production for another A.D project..

  • Raider-405

Jhill, I unfortunately cant disagree with you more. You must not be a Raider fan if you want to push off a team captain off the roster.

As far as Brown and Aston, they are both in the same boat being undersized LBs and too slow to play safetly.

Love Morrison, but he is an OLB not a MLB.

  • Als saggy lower jaw

2007 wasn’t sooo bad if Russell doesn’t flop.

and we’re doing our best to screw him up.. new coach new system.. lots of rookies do great under those circumstances…

  • Florida Pete

i’ll be keeping an eye on Raji and Brace to see how they do…

i’ll also be watching Jaspar Brinkley…

let’s see if all these guys were worth passing up in favor of Mitchell…

maybe Mitchell will stop the run… but he ain’t gonna do it at the line of scrimmage…

  • Als saggy lower jaw

and the only reason any 2007 of our pix outside of Miller of JLH start or play much is cause we suck balls..

  • SnB Defense

    JHIll,

I agree to disagree with you on talent level. But your take on Morrison brings a question to mind. Obviously, they brought in Joseph and are moving Brown to give a look at the MLB. Well, why not draft Jasper Brinkley instead of Slade Norris?

I know its water under the bridge at this point. I think the coaches really like Morrison and he will be starting at MLB with little real competition. Basically two undrafted free agent types and we know that Brown/Joseph don’t have the cover skills that Morrison has.

Maersk Considers More Layoffs at Shipyard
    Tuesday, June 16, 2009

According to a June 15 report from The Journal of Commerce, A.P. Moller-Maersk is considering an additional 175 layoffs at its Danish shipyard because of a lack of orders.

The Copenhagen-based shipping and energy group also said the loss-making Odense Steel shipyard, which has built the world’s biggest container ships, has agreed to delay the delivery of three ships.

If Mitchell starts killing people in the NFL like he did in college, we will all forget about Brace and all the other talented players Al passed up on draft day. It won’t make us a great run-stopping team, but it should help a little…and we can always hope Kelly’s knee is now 100% healed and that he will play up to his potential. And we can always hope that Richardson continues to improve and gets some playing time at LDE to help against the run rather than throwing Burgess out there to get steamrolled by big RTs.

    It’s all about hope baby!

Who am I kidding, we are fuked.

  • Als saggy lower jaw

235, a good draft is when 4-5 players start or contribute right away, help us win.. and dont loose their jobs..

  • jhill

    405,

    Look at your last statement.

You don’t disagree with me at all that Morrison needs to be replaced. I think he was a TC by default in that he was the MLB who called the plays. He won’t be missed. Alston bulking up to the 230 range is a better option at OLB.

Ricky Brown is fast enough to play OLB but not fast enough to play MLB? You might want to rethink that.

Who cares about Raji, Brace or Brinkley?

Only the Packers, Patriots & Vikings will be concerned with thier performance this season.

We should be keeping our eyes on Heyward-Bey, Mitchell & Shaughnessy. If these guys fail to make an immediate impact we could carry guys like Javon Walker, Hiram Eugene and Jay Richardson on next year’s roster too …
