Ellis signed . . . officially

Now that the Raiders.com has actually put it on their transactions page, we can assume defensive end Greg Ellis is aboard as a free agent.

Actually, it was certain last night when CEO Amy Trask confirmed to Associated Press that Ellis was indeed signed.

Aside from the fact that A.P. got actual confirmation rather than someone from Bay Area News Group East-Bay, this was good news. Trask, to my knowledge, had never gone on record with a player signing before. And given that her record at responding to messages is somewhere approaching 100 percent, this was a good thing.

Alas, my understanding is this was a one-and-done confirmation . . . too bad.

Hopefully, Ellis will be available for interviews Wednesday. I remember him being an impressive, straight-forward veteran when the Cowboys trained at San Jose State a few years back when playing the 49ers and Raiders back-to-back.

    Jhill,

Kirk Morrison will be starting at MLB

Ricky Brown will be at SLB

Hiram Eugene will be at FS…although I hope Mike Mitchell gets the spot.

Mike Mitchell has to start year 1?

Why becuase —– would’ve surely started if we drafted him instead?

Tyvon Branch backed up Wilson as a SS last year.

Mike Mithcell is a SS as well.

    Hmmmmmm!

  • jhill

    Ok SnB …

If it happened to Gasoft, then maybe it can happen to Morrison too. Maybe Morrison can miraculously toughen up overnight and keep his job.

I just don’t think Morrisons job is safe. Why are they even playing Brown at MLB? Why did they bring in Joseph?

    Hmmmm!

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

you needed help with a name???

    here ya go…

    Brace, Brinkley… and about 30 other players…

we drafted like a team that had won 11 games the year before…

    i don’t want Al Davis to be a genius…

i want him to be competent…

  • RaiderRockstar

My draft would have looked like this:

    1 – WR Michael Crabtree
    2 – DT Ron Brace
3 – SS Rashad Johnson or Chip Vaughn
    4 – OT Troy Kropog
4 – OL Jamon Meredith or Duke Robinson
    6 – TE Brandon Myers
6 – C Blake Schlueter, C AQ Shipley, DL Clinton McDonald or LB Zack Follett

WOW. sure hope I was wrong!

  • M Lonetree

May Missile Mike become the player that causes opponents to have their heads on a swivel and their arms alligator shortened resulting many a heated conversation in offensive huddles about high throws or floaters over the middle.

QB – “Why didn’t you try for that pass?”
WR – “I didn’t want to end up in the morgue.”
TE – “Yeah, next time you throw a pass like that one to me I’m not only not going to go for it, I’m gonna come back here and stomp your sorry a$$.”

no amount of toughness or desire on my part is going to help me stop the run…

i simply do not have the talent…

kelly, warren, turdell… maybe they have talent…

and that talent lasts until about midway through the 3rd qtr… depending upon the competence of our offence…

we needed, still need, fresh young legs up front…

    so… who’s gonna stop the run…

  • jhill

Ron Brace was gone when we picked in the 2nd. And he wouldn’t have started over Warren or Kelly anyway.

Brinkley? They guy every team passed on until the 5th round? We should’ve taken him in the 2nd over Mitchell b/c he would have “moved” Morrison aside?

    Ok Pete!

  • Raider-405

Ok, so when Morrison and Howard were both at OLB, many regarded them as soon to be pro bowlers.

Now with Brown, he couldnt start the season at OLB last year where it was obviously a team weakness, and he wasnt even drafted, he was a UFA.
Sorry, but maybe your point has some validity if Morrison ALSO started his career on the practice squad.

Morrison lead the team in tackles the last two years… yeah… sure he should be kicked off the team oh and of course… 52 man roster… he got the captain tag by default.

I like Alson, but again, also a UFA who started on the practice squad.

Think about this for just a moment…. BOTH players were UFAs, started on the practice squad for a team at that time with not a whole lot of talent.

BOTH players would struggle to make an NFL roster in other cities, and are nothing more than special teamers that have worked their a$$es off.

Really, I think you must be a borderline Raider fan at best.

    405,

    Look at your last statement.

You don’t disagree with me at all that Morrison needs to be replaced. I think he was a TC by default in that he was the MLB who called the plays. He won’t be missed. Alston bulking up to the 230 range is a better option at OLB.

Ricky Brown is fast enough to play OLB but not fast enough to play MLB? You might want to rethink that.

  • Florida Pete

Brace was gone because we didn’t want him…

remember… we traded down to avoid him…

  • SnB Defense

    JHill,

Seems like your dislike for Morrison’s play is akin to my views on the middle of the D-Line….LOL

It is a team game and I am kind at peace with the roster. We just have to hope that Marshall and company can change the orientation from “Back 7″ to “Front 7″.

Like you said, hopefully having 4 DTs as opposed to 3 will improve the play upfront and as a result the play of the linebackers.

Kirk Morrison is about as solid of a lock for this roster as anyone. I believe Cable when he said they moved Brown over to get him experience. The Raiders have no one behind Morrison in case of injury. Franz Joseph might as well be on the Moon as far as his proximity to making the roster.

Ricky Brown will move back to SLB and be able to slide over should Morrison get hurt.

Morisson has experience and more importantly the speed the Raiders covet

If you cant come to Oakland on D and not crack the starting line up except for corner, then there is a very good chance you arent starting for any other NFL team.

Yeah, that was a let down….then to see New England sweep in there and get him. I guess I was thinking the Raiders might trade up to grab Rey Mauluaga.

The Raiders came into that draft determined to grab 2 players and that was it. They had tunnel vision on day 1.

    Yup 405,

I’m a borderline Raiderfan, or maybe I’m not one at all.

Why are you trying to play the fanhood card?

Have any other tired cliches to throw out there?

Look man, you say that Morrison needs to be replaced at MLB just like I am saying, so what’s the problem?
Why not just replace him like you admit needs to be happend. You realize he is a FA next year, and will want how much $? Again a guy that we both AGREE needs to be replaced.

He played 1 year at OLB before he was moved to MLB. Who besided you Morrison slobbers were saying he was a probowl candidate?

What does UDFA (not UFA) or practice squad have to do with anything? Should we talk to last years Defensive Player Of The Year about that?

  • RaiderRockstar

Another solid draft would have been:

    1- OT Eugene Monroe
    2- C Max Unger
    3- WR Ramses Barden
    4- DT Terrance Taylor
4- SS Nic Harris or Chris Clemons
6- DL Will Davis or Myron Pryor
6- LB J.D Folsom or Brad Jones

    oh well!

  • Al DAVIS HAS COJONES

    Base D:

    Ends- Ellis and Shaughnessy

    Passing downs:

    Ends- Burgess and Scott

    Goal Line:

    Ends- Richardson and Ellis

LOL at trying to project anything draft related after the 2nd round RRS.

  • SnB Defense

    Rockstar,

It is what it is. Hopefully Mike Mitchell is the real deal. Heyward-Bey is going to have a tough time cracking the starting lineup. I don’t say that to be negative…but if Chaz Schilens is on a mission and stepping up his game…then he’s a rock solid lock….then Heyward-Bey will have his hands full keeping ahead of JLH, Murphy and yes…Javon Walker.

Louis Murphy was a pretty good receiver down there in Florida.

  • Al DAVIS HAS COJONES

    Overrated:

Huff and Sands(flat out suk,)Morrison, Fargas, Richardson.

    Most important:

Henderson, Satele, Miller, SeaBass, Chris Johnson

  • SnB Defense

    JHill,

Had the Raiders drafted Rey Mauluga or Jasper Brinkley I could see Morrison moving to the SLB spot. But they didn’t do that. Just like they left Warren and Sands largely untouched.

Kirk Morrison is the undisputed starter.

  • jhill

DHB will start day 1 with Schillens. JLH will be the slot WR.

DHB will be on the field.

Mitchell might be as well ahead of Branch. That’s going to be an interesting competition.

  • Florida Pete

even if Mitchell is the real deal… adn i do hope he is…

    we still have a problem…

hoping your offense will put up enough points to disguise the fact that you can’t stop the run past halftime… is football suicide…

    it’s pop warner football…

  • Raider-405

DHB should certainly be starting vs the Bolts week 1 because of the salary that accompanies that.

As far as Mitchell, I really wish I see him starting this year, but he is a project and will earn his way via special teams.

When Mitchell cant even make honorable mention at his position at a mid-major conference, there are a lot of bad plays that are made. We all love the highlight reel, but to not be recognized for your play on the field but rather a highlight package and a great workout.

  • jhill

I think you said it best SnB …

I feel the same way about Morrison that you guys do about Sands.

A lot of you feel the same way about Morrison, but for some strange reason want to “MOVE” him to a different position, lol!

Can we just “move” Sands to another spot? How about C?

  • Florida Pete

how about to the lunch counter???

  • jhill

Still rolling out the fat jokes Pete for a guy who was the Biggest Loser on the team?

Dude is in shape for the gazillonth time!

    You know what!

Sands is my new favorite player on Defense. I believe in him and he is going to be the guy this year, along with Warren and Kelly.

Our DTs are going to be a stregnth on this team!

I think I saw a post a few topics ago where you had mentioned being a patriot and only buying American vehicles.

I used to work for a Lincoln Mercury dealership and if you are interested in purchasing used I would highly recommend a V8 Lincoln LS, 2003 or newer. If it needs to be a new vehicle then maybe an Lincoln MKS.
