OTA news and notes

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 at 1:08 pm in Oakland Raiders.

News and notes from the last Raiders’ OTA session available to the media:

– The acquisition of Greg Ellis and the fate of defensive end Derrick Burgess are unrelated, coach Tom Cable said. But it’s worth noting Ellis lined up at Burgess’ left end spot with the first team on his second day as a Raider.

“It came about pretty quick last week, and once it got in motion, I think this was the place he wanted to be, and obviously, what we’re doing defensively, it fits him,” Cable said. “He started out as a 4-3 end and became an outside backer in a 3-4 and now he’s in a 4-3. It makes our team better. I said from the very beginning we’d try to do that, when possible, when it presented itself, so it’s a good deal for us.”

Can Ellis be an an every down player?

“It think he can be. You look a the film and he’s been doing that, albeit in a different position, this is a guy you would rely on to come in and compete to be a starter and all that,” Cable said. “He’s got so much left in terms of where he’s at physically, in terms of his body, his production, so again, just a positive for our team.

– Exactly what Ellis thinks about joining the Raiders isn’t clear. Several media members were hoping to ask quesitons, but instead he was walked off the field by a member of the club’s media relations staff and he never returned.

Whether Ellis didn’t feel like talking or the team didn’t want him to talk isn’t known. No explanation was given. My recollection of Ellis when the Cowboys trained at San Jose State during a week between a Raiders and 49ers game was that he was an extremely personable and agreeable interview subject.

– Ellis practiced with the Raiders for the first time Tuesday, but it wasn’t even mentioned by the club’s Twitter account, which did update fans on tryouts for the Junior Raiderettes.

– The seeds of Burgess’ discontent with the Raiders began when former personnel exec Mike Lombardi was looking in to a contract extension for the Pro Bowl defensive end. When Lombardi was fired, any chance for a deal was lost.

Lombardi assessed the Burgess situation as part of this National Football Post column, although he didn’t write about how it all started.

– Near the end of practice a fight broke out between Tyvon Branch and a lineman, believed to be Cooper Carlisle, and it took a scrum of players to separate them. Cable met with the team after the three horns signifying the end of practice and his first line had the team laughing.

When the Raiders came off the field, Branch was talking with defensive coordiantor John Marshall.

– Other than Ellis at left end, the Raiders finished the public portion of their last OTA much the way they have the past few weeks. No real surprises in among the starters. Khalif Barnes did get some work with the first team at left tackle, although not as much as Mario Henderson.

– Cable said the undrafted free agents which have shown the most this offseason are wide receiver Nick Miller and safety Jerome Boyd, a converted linebacker from Oregon.

– No truly horrible throws from Russell Wednesday, but nothing of note down the field, either, even though there was little in the way of red zone drills. Russell said afterward the plan is to get the receivers together for a gathering at an undisclosed location to work on their timing.

“We’re going to get the receivers and tight ends a week away from everything, just go along by ourselves and accomplish something that would make us a lot better during the year,” Russell said. Just work on our own, with nobody out there but us, get ready for camp, get ready for a new year.”

Cable was glad to hear it.

“I think it’s a big step. It’s kind of what we’ve been talking about all along, and to hear about that is obviously a positive from a coaches’ standpoint,” Cable said. “It will be good to hear how that goes and what his plan is.”

Sounds great, but we’ll probably never know which receivers show up, which ones are healthy enough to show up, and which ones are advised by their agents or the union to not show up.

– With Nnamdi Asomugha and Chris Johnson not attending, John Bowie got in work as a starting cornerback opposite Stanford Routt and got worked over by most every receiver who lined up against him.

– Rookie free agent wide receiver Shawn Bayes made the catch of the day with a dive inside the 5-yard line on a medium-depth throw from Garcia during a team drill. Bayes had the biggest downfield catch as well, a 30-yarder from Garcia against Jason Horton.

(It was enough to make you wonder if Cable meant to say Bayes, No. 87, as a standout, as opposed to Miller, who wears No. 89. Miller also caught a few passes).

– During a two-minute drill in a team session starting at the 20-yard line, Russell looked in the direction of Zach Miller four staright times, not getting a first down, and taking what the coaches ruled a sack on one play.

– In another drive which started at the 20, Russell underthrew a long lob to Johnnie Lee Higgins, with Bowie holding up in coverage, but beat a Thomas Howard blitz with a quick out to Miller for a first down on third-and-3 and converted a third-and-10 with a quick pass to his right to tight end Tony Stewart.

The drive eventually stalled when Russell stepped up on fourth-and-3 threw incomplete with two defenders closer than any Oakland receiver.

– Heyward-Bey and Mitchell weren’t the only rookies who came off the field. Louis Murphy hopped off the field on one play, with Cable saying afterward it was because of a cramp.

Regarding Heyward-Bey’s injury, Cable said, “As you saw, Heyward-Bey is sore. We don’t have any idea what that means because we haven’t had a chance to go look at him yet.”

Hard to know whether the hamstring injury is a fluke or something to be concerned about long-term. Heyward-Bey was regarded as a durable receiver at Maryland.

– Asked whether Mitchell’s absence and hamstring injury sets him back, Cable said, “It does. You can’t do anything about the rules. They are what they are. You have to abide by them so we have some work, some catch-up to do when we get to camp with him, certainly.”

– Perhaps not coincidentally, the Raiders defensive front refrained from jumping offsides with Tommy Kelly absent.

– Raiders players will largely be on their own from now until training camp begins. The reporting date is July 29. Players will be given things to work on and ostensibly a prescribed reporting weight.

I have been gone for a while, how are you feeling about the Ellis signing?

Personally I think he’s got a lot left in the tank with something to prove. Also I have the feeling he is relishing the idea of being back in a 4-3 base defense, at his natural position of DE.

I like the Greg Ellis signing, I don’t think he will improve the Run D, but hopefully he’s more vocal than D Burgess and instills some mental toughness to the rest of the D-Line. Which I think they need. Because I don’t believe Sands/Kelly are hard workers.

i was watching NFLN earlier-a show about the NY Titans/Jets and realized they haven’t been to a SB in over 50 years.i made me wonder how would we as Raider fans accept that?would we rather have their recent record or our history with our recent record?

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Um, the Jets won the SB on January 12, 1969….did you mean 40 years?

Up to this point in the offseason, Cable has been doing everything right. Except for a questionable draft which he obviously had no control over, he was able to bring in a solid offesive coaching staff – Hackett, Tollner and the line coach Miczelnik (sp?) – that will address our o line and quarterback.

While Jamarcus planning a receivers / qb camp isn’t ground breaking, it is one of the biggest signs of him being a leader we’ve seen. And it seems like this is a direct result of the challenge issued to him by Cable.

Whether or not this is the first of many displays of leadership, we’ll see. But it’s encouraging that he’s attempting to take the reigns during OTAs and hopefully embracing his role.

On a different note – what the F is the deal with our training staff? Do we have the worst collection of medics in the league? Recent examples -

    1) DMAC gets incurable turf toe from an ill fitting cleat. Confesses to still being in pain.

    2) Arman Shields still isn’t recovered from an injury from a YEAR AGO

    3) DHB injures hammy weeks ago, returns only to switfly reinjure again.

    4) Walker needs extra surgery to fix his still ailing knee – that he played with all last year at 60%

    5) Samson Satele gets pushed in OTAs – OTAs! – even though he professes his shoulder isn’t completely healed

Al, I know you hate paying your coaches but don’t you realize your training staff keeps your track stars on the field?

You may be right about Ellis not helping with the run D, but I think his veteran leadership is much needed up front.

Not sure if this spells the end for Burgess in the S&B, I would be ok if he and Ellis bookended the line, although Jerry did mention that Ellis lined up at LDE at the OTA’s, Burgess’ spot.

Burgess is in a contract year, if he sticks around, he will be auditioning for other teams all year long. With Ellis there pushing him, we may see a big year out of Burgess.

Do the Raiders get a 3rd round pick for Burgess or do they keep him with the hopes of a return to form?

    Thanks for answering me btw.

It would take another 14 years without a SB victory to equal the Jets 40. Will I still be here in 14 years commenting on our team if we haven’t added another trophy?

Let’s look at Greg Ellis as a DE as opposed to Greg Ellis as an OLB.

    2003-2005 (DE 3 seasons) 143 tackles, 25 sacks, 7 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, 0 INT’s

    2006-2008 (LB 3 seasons) 98 tackles, 25 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 2 INT’s

    Derrick Burgess:

    2006-2008 (DE 3 seasons) 115 tackles, 22.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, no INT’s

    yeah – we’re getting a player !!!

Here’s a question…which player on the current team has the best chance to STILL be on the team in 14 years?

    Answer: Danny Southwick!

  • RaiderRockstar

I think Jay Richardson will be cut and Derrick Burgess will stick as a situational pass rusher. Trevor Scott will start on the other end of Ellis. Matt Shaughnessy will be the 4th DE. Gunheim will be on the practice squad again. Gray or Bryant could join him there.

If Burgess blows up in a reduced role (10-16 sacks) we could always tag & trade him next offseason

  • lefty12

DE position should be very interesting.someone will have to go.will we get rid of the guys we drafted without giving them any realistic opportunities?i doubt it.

  • RaiderRockstar

BSJ – Agreed. Danny Southwick will beat out Gradkowski, Frye and Walter

Garcia will retire next offseason and Southwick will be Russell’s heir apparent

  • Al DAVIS HAS COJONES

you think we’ll keep Sulak on the roster as a 5th DE ?

    We’re already keeping like 12 LB’s and WR’s. right?

you’re right. somebody will HAVE to go

  • lefty12

RR-i think Burgess is the one to go,especially with the way Cable is filling the roster with high character, hard worker type guys.i don’t think Cable likes the way Burgess is always nursing nagging injuries and doesn’t participate as a member of the team.he seems to be a loner-not a team guy like we are trying to fill the roster with.

  • http://www.blogcdn.com/www.fanhouse.com/media/2008/04/desmond-howard-425-sm.jpg Bo Schembechler Jackson

Was Gunheim active for 6 games last year?

    Practice Squad rules:

Each NFL team may keep up to eight members on their “practice squad” in addition to their 53-member main roster. They consist mostly of rookies who were cut in training camps and borderline NFL-caliber players. Both rookies and young veterans are eligible for the practice squad. However, a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons, or if he has accrued a year of NFL experience (six or more games on a club’s 53-man active roster or official Injured Reserve list.)

Practice squad players practice alongside regular roster players during the week, but they are not allowed to play in actual games. They can be paid considerably less than active squad players: The minimum salary from 2008 to 2010 is $5,200 per week (2008-2010)[1] for 17 weeks, or $88,400 per season, in comparison to the NFL minimum rookie salary of $285,000.

Players can be promoted to the active roster either by their current team, or by another team who is scouting them. They retain free agent status and may sign with any team they wish without compensation to the original team.

    ***

you’re right. what an ill timed injury. If he was killing it in the mandatory camp and OTA’s they might have passed on Greg Ellis … plus William Joseph & Ryan Boschetti aren’t exactly considered “fierce competition” at DT by most guys standards

now i’m afraid he’s done in Oakland. oh well. he was only a 6th round pick who Kiffin drafted for special teams use anyways. nobody expected him to beat out Quentin Moses or Tyler Brayton and actually claim a starting job

The NBA is elementary and so self absorbed it is not even enjoyable to watch.

When one guy scores 50 points in a sporting event to me that is very arrogant and self centered. That would be like watching Tom Cruise talk about himself for an hour.

They don’t play defense, why even play the game why not just have a slam dunk contest take place instead?

For me personally watching Poker on ESPN or even women’s curling is more exciting than the NBA.

Lefty: I highly doubt anybody would part ways with Derrick Burgess (2 time pro bowler) just to keep a roster spot warm for Sulak or Gunheim – especially Al Davis

Cable doesn’t make the final decisions. remember?

I think AD is still fuming after the Pats got Randy Moss and he had 2 megastar seasons. He already knows that Bill Belly is licking his chops to get a pass rusher like D-Burg for next to nothing

    666,

I can see what you are saying. Thankfully, I am a Lakers’ fan and the Lakers actually run an offense. They don’t just run pick and rolls and isolations, so it makes for a better brand of basketball to watch. Personally, I can rarely watch NBA games that do not include the Lakers. How many times a game can the Cavs run a James drives and kicks out play before you get bored with it? Or the Magic run a pick and roll with Turkey? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz The worst ever was Stockton and Malone over and over again.
