666, I actually do think Tiger is a superior athlete to Kobe (or anyone else), although they have a lot in common as far as mental toughness and desire. Both were child prodigies and from unique ethnic/geographic backgrounds too. And both would undoubtedly kick ass at any competitive venture they chose.
June 18th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
666, I actually asked Jerry if he only answers questions from people who do not comment on his blog. Then he answered my Southwick question, LOL. I’ve got 5 others pending…

[Comment From Bo Schembechler Jackson]
Has Danny Southwick looked as impressive as he did at Occidental? GO OXY!
1:29 jerrymac: He hasn’t taken a single snap in a 7-7 or team session. He’s a camp arm to throw to WRs.

Wow. in all of the OTA’s Jerry Mac watched 2 of the 3 players who have played “especially bad” are Russell and Heyward-Bey
but he’d still take JaWalrus over Orton. LOL!
June 18th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
With Schilens, JLH, DHB and Murphy assured spots (injury aside), then Nick Miller, Bayes, Holland, Samie Parker can compete. Walker will have to prove he is healthy and willing to play hard at camp.

what about Will Franklin, Arman Shields & Todd Watkins?

ouch. J-Russ has played like crap in OTA’s , but he’s still able to torch Huff Daddy in the red zone?

My favorite answer from Jerry:
“Laker talk (dakota) or sports talk (everyone) not a big deal, (here comes the mod hammer) as long as profanities (no-co bob) religion, politics (Raider TW KK, Dakota, Madden Raider, BSJ, LMN, etc..) personal insults (mistabrown, Oakglenn, dude, and many others) and all other fun stuff that goes are kept under control”.
Jery covered it all, except woman talk (24) and blues talk (Raiderdogg, SNB666, Raider Dell, Vegas Raider) and let me add just be polite and pleasant like Raider O.
So we no our limits until training camp, let’s have fun talking about ??????????

KoolKell,

I was extremely pleased to read JRuss’ words about gathering the receivers and QBs for a time on their own. (Perhaps that will shut up many of the pukes who do nothing but bust his chops for all reasons.) Jamarcus is manning up as he gets it that this is HIS TEAM.

June 18th, 2009 at 7:46 pm
Dont worry, I will not say anything!
Players say they don’t pay attention to the media, but they do. you can look at way in 2 ways:
- the man has pride, and he wants to prove himself.
- something to get the media and fans excited about, instead of all the JR bashing.
Perception!! Glass half full or half empty.

June 18th, 2009 at 7:49 pm
I think the man’s pride was hurt a few times by the Kittin, Caoch Cable, the Media, and the fans. He had enough, time to show them what he can do. A man’s pride can’t be ignored.
That’s my opinion, what do you think?
June 18th, 2009 at 7:50 pm
Coach Cable.
June 18th, 2009 at 7:52 pm
Nnamdi,
There is, think about it. DMunoz is blessed!!
June 18th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Compare JR to V Young & Matt L, both lost the respect of the fans and the media, and look at how they acted!! Now look at JR!
The man has pride, and he wants to win. We’ll be fine with JR at QB, now we need stability and an Oline. Again IMHO
June 18th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
I SAID A FEW DAY’S AGO, I THINK THE FIRST THREE GAMES THIS YEAR WILL TELL US A LOT ABOUT THE QB.AGAINST THE THREE MOST HATED AND ARCH RIVALS THE RAIDER’S HAVE. IMO HE HAS TO LET THE FAN’S THE COACHES HIS TEAMATE’S, AND MAYBE MOST IMPORTANTILY MIMSELF, HE HAS THE ABILITY , AND HEART / GUTS TO WIN THESE GAMES.

Just a comment on the Russell private practice session. I find it some what ridiculous that he could get ridiculed for doing what he thinks can make the team better. The fact that he is doing it at this point in the offseason is consistent with every QB &WR corp in the league this is when it’s done.
If you know anything about the process in the offseason it makes no sense to do this earlier. In the early part of the offseason Russell was in QB school. Then minicamp then post draft minicamp subsequently the OTA’s if you understand what the OTA’s are for then you’ll understand this post OTA impromtu session.
Minicamps and OTA’s are for teaching the system, terminology and bringing new FA’s and draft picks up to speed in the system. It’s mostly classroom type stuff and then they take it to the practice field for application. So there is a lot of teaching of the system to all parties. Once that’s done then things like timing and familiarity with each other makes more sense.
To do a session like what Russell is doing now early in the offseason would defeat that purpose essentially wasting time. Some of the principle parties wouldn’t even be on the team (draft picks and FA’s). And the system if any changes were in place wouldn’t have been installed yet. <Making an earlier session of this sort POINTLESS!!
So when you make these criticism how ’bout giving what your saying a little thought FIRST.
What Russell is doing NOW!! will be much more effective because all of the above. Now they can just utilize everything they’ve learned in OTA’s and minicamp and put it to good use.
Also Russell has been under reconstruction so to speak in terms of mechanics and he’s trying put that to good use while familiarizing himself with his reievers. The passing game is all timing and familiarity the WR’s can tell him where they like the ball and he can tell them what he sees and wants to accomplish in terms of anticipating they’re route running. This is very critical that they trust each other and he can start to trust that if he throws that pass that they will get to that point when the ball gets there. It’s called timing but it really amounts to TRUST.
This is Russell’s first real big step in the process of becoming what we all(hopefully all)want him to become. To rag on him shows a lack of understanding of that process.

Burgess has also been the subject of trade rumors this offseason, but the Raiders insist the signing of Ellis is not related to that situation.
“I don’t think it has anything to do with it at this point,” Cable said. “This was just let’s make our team better and here’s the next opportunity to do that.”

I doubt Dungver would accept the Bears 2nd rounder as fair compensation though … look what Minny gave up for Jared Allen and he was 1 bottle of Jack Daniels away from a 1 year suspension too (plus he owned a bar!) haha

June 19th, 2009 at 7:14 am
AHHH morning Nation!!!
Yesterday this site was SLOW it wouldnt even let me on!!!!!!!!!
OLD news but cool read!!!!!!!!!!
ALAMEDA — Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell is arranging a week of practice for any of the team’s other quarterbacks and all the wide receivers and tight ends, at an undisclosed location.
Russell wasn’t about to divulge many details. He said he just wants to make sure the quarterbacks and receivers are on the same page when training camp begins July 30 in Napa.
“We’re going to get the receivers and tight ends a week away from everything, just go along by ourselves and accomplish something that would make us a lot better during the year,” Russell said after Wednesday’s practice during organized team activities. “Just work on our own, with nobody out there but us, get ready for camp, get ready for a new year.”
That’s music to Raiders coach Tom Cable’s ears as he yearns for Russell to grow into his role as a starting quarterback and team leader. Cable has made it known that he wants Russell to work harder and grasp better the things necessary to be a successful NFL quarterback.
“It’s a big step,” Cable said. “It’s kind of what we’ve been talking about all along, and to hear about that is, obviously, a positive from a coach’s standpoint. It will be good to hear how that goes and what his plan is.”

Report: Ellis turned down Pats 06.18.09 at 6:42 pm ET
By Christopher Price
According to this report in the Dallas Morning News, Greg Ellis — who was recently released by the Cowboys — was offered a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Patriots. However, the veteran pass rusher decided against signing with New England, preferring instead to ink a three-year, $10 million contract with Oakland.
The 33-year-old Ellis, who has played his entire 11-year career with Dallas before being cut loose earlier this spring, had 77 sacks in 11 seasons with the Cowboys. His best season came in 2007 when he made the Pro Bowl after posting a career-best 12.5 sacks, despite missing the first three games recovering with a torn Achilles’ tendon.
A first-round pick out of North Carolina, Ellis is a 6-foot-6, 262-pounder who spent eight years at defensive end in Dallas before the Cowboys moved him to outside linebacker.

June 19th, 2009 at 8:17 am
hmm.. let’s see:
1 year at $1.5 million or 3 years for $10 million
seems like a no brainer!
However, us getting Ellis at an average of $3.3 million per season is dirt cheap for a proven vet who can start at LDE on Week 1

SnB,
Man you should know that an unrestricted Free Agent is NOT a cap casualty. And there is a distinction between a great player and a good one.
Again, NO ONE and I mean NO ONE or team gets rid of a ‘GREAT PLAYER’ for cap considerations…………that’s foolishness.
June 19th, 2009 at 8:25 am
priest: what “great player” are we going to get rid of?
June 19th, 2009 at 8:26 am
Namely Vince Wilfork has a way to go before being called a great player. I thought maybe you would understand my point. If they let him go for cap reasons, that should tell you all you need to know……….period
June 19th, 2009 at 8:30 am

***
so any player that enters free agency is worthless? whether he’s cut or his contract expires?
June 19th, 2009 at 8:36 am
I agree with Priesttj…pretty much any player that a team does not retain during this period of expansive cap room is a player that has injury problems, head case problems, major holes in their games, or they are overreaching for the $$$.
The days of teams having to make hard decision on whether or not to keep a great player are over…all the good ones are kept in house.
June 19th, 2009 at 8:37 am
Priest/RRS,
Other considerations include whether a team has quality younger, cheaper, healthier players available at said player’s position. Burgess and Scott for example, or Kelly/Sapp. The cap is always just one of many issues.
June 19th, 2009 at 8:42 am
Vince Wilfork is a pro bowler and super bowl champion. He’s only 27 years old (in his prime). there is a reason why he was drafted by the Pats (good talent evaluators) and why it was in the 1st round … he’s got skills! he’s one of the best interior linemen in the league. the NT in a 3-4 defense that eats up OL like JaWalrus eats pancakes.
Richard Seymour & Ty Warren are also solid DT’s drafted by the Pats in Round 1. Why take all these DT’s that high? because stopping the run is a priority to them
June 19th, 2009 at 8:42 am

Well guys, you may be seeing a lot of more of me over the next few weeks. Just got suspended (with pay thankfully) for two weeks from work, and think they will terminate me after the two weeks. Securities violation.
Kind of pissed, but ready to move on.
BTW, the fact that Daniel Snyder is the one who gave Haynesworth his big payday kind of implies he will be a bust. History has a way of repeating itself. I think the next “good” FA signing by Snyder will be his first.

Did Raiders draft the next Rashaun Woods?
Maybe the most significant event of yesterday: Raiders’ No. 1 pick Darrius Heyward-Strain, err… I mean Heyward-Bey… pulled up after one route in Wednesday’s OTA.
That hamstring has been a nettlesome issue for DHB this entire off-season–DHB was not known as an injury-prone guy in his unproductive Maryland days.
So maybe he’s just going through a random bit of hamstring tenderness. Maybe he’ll be 100% once training camp starts in Napa in late July and explode past all defenders.
But we’ve all seen this before out of a first-round WR in the Bay Area, and the precedent is not a happy one: Rashaun Woods couldn’t make it through a couple practices at a time after the 49ers drafted him in the first round (31st overall) in 2004.
Woods just wasn’t physically capable of getting to NFL speed without his legs giving out on him. He caught a total of 7 passes in his 49ers career. Oops.
An old coach told me long ago that the first thing rookies have to prove is that they can stay healthy in the NFL–the practices are harder and more important than in college, the games are tougher, and the willingness to baby players is less prevalent.
If they can’t get through practices, doesn’t matter how talented they are, they’ll never make it as NFL standouts.
Of course, Al Davis is going to baby DHB for a little while and will blame anybody else he can think of for Heyward-Bey’s leg troubles.
As Mike Lombardi hilariously pointed out via Twitter: ”The groundskeeper probably did not mow the grass right… he will get blamed.”
But if DHB can’t make it through a couple practices in a row at Napa… Man, Al will have to blame the people who convinced him to draft DHB. Darn those football guys who keep forcing Al to draft shaky players!

RRS, good point. You stopped at E so you didn’t have to include Deangelo Hall huh? LOL.
June 19th, 2009 at 9:07 am
Heh heh, Smoke Potter said “grass”.
June 19th, 2009 at 9:12 am
Jhill: I’m not saying that Vince Wilfork will be the answer to all of our problems in fixing the run defense or that the Raiders can afford him or even that the Pats would be willing to part ways with him.
All i’m saying is that he’s a good player. Better than any DT we currently have on the roster. priest was making it sound like VW is a bum
I know that it takes 11 guys to stuff the run and I also know that we have a new defensive staff in place. John Marshall should have a year to see if these guys can be effective under his scheme and teaching before we go and scrap the entire heap of defensive players off the roster. I said this leading up to the draft you might recall
Let’s not say that Kelly/Warren/Sands/Joseph/Boschetti = a solid group of DT’s either though. None of these guys even come close to Wilfork’s talent or production. We ranked 31st against the run last year. I think coaching makes a difference. Question is “how much of a difference?”

Jeez, I was gonna trim trees this weekend but I might reconsider…
::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Family of tree trimmer killed by wood chipper sues manufacturer
1:56 PM | June 18, 2009
It was just another work day for Rafael Jimenez, a veteran tree trimmer in his 24th year on the job. But as he stuffed branches from the Chinese elm tree into a wood chipper in Inglewood that sunny day in April, Jimenez’s right hand became entangled in the branches and he found himself being jerked toward the steel knives.
The machine, which devours a 20-inch branch in a second, consumed Jimenez’s hand, then his elbow, his shoulder, and soon his entire self. All that remained were his two feet from the ankle down and a part of his gloved left hand.
This week, his wife and four children sued the manufacturer of the machine, Michigan-based Morbark, alleging that the company knew for years that its safety features were insufficient and did nothing to prevent injuries and deaths such as Jimenez’s.
June 19th, 2009 at 9:18 am
Yeah, so I like the signing of Ellis, but DAMN there is no question why he joined the silver and black instead of going to get a ring with the Pats
That money difference is INSANE!!!
1 yr at 1.5
3 yrs at 10 million
I dont like the signing as much after seeing how we overpaid.
June 19th, 2009 at 9:19 am
bottom line is Wilfork may be better than any of the DT’s on our roster…I rember greats like Marcus Allen Joe Montana to name a few that changed teams and I’m sure it had nothing to do with cap….If a “great” player wants out or lik BSJ said they have younger less expensive options or just plain want the guy out of town….Dosnt mean they have no skills and were let go for thier attitude it could have been anything!!!and Post 168 1st paragraph says it all!!! we neet TALENT at all spots…whats one mans garbage is another mans GOLD……..

yup, client complained, she gave me “discretion” awhile back, and than when it didn’t work in her favor, she complained. Hopefully she won’t sue, but I think the firm is going to move on.
My firm merged with another 6 months ago, and they have been trimming cost ever since. Had a job on the trading desk packaging and marketing structured products and they cut that from me a few months ago. since that was about half my pay, it’s time to move on. Maybe go work for the IRS, just sent in my resume.
June 19th, 2009 at 9:23 am
VW may not be a bum, but if he was remotely the player some of you think he was then why is he on his way out of NE? That point just can not be dismissed. They are not even willing to sit down with this guy as evidenced by the Brace pick.
Think his pro bowl appearnce might have something to do with him playing for the Pats?
Honestly, I’d rather have one of their draft picks for Burgess than Wilfork. Our current group of DTs could absolutely be called solid. Get those guys a 4th DT in the rotation and some DEs and LBs with some physical attributes, and that 31st run defense will improve by leaps and bounds.

Like Ray Lewis always said give ME A REAL DT so i can do my job….our run defense will not improve if our current group of DT’s play like they have in recent years you know how hard it is to make a play from ou LB postion when we have FB and RB and other lead blockers runnig full steam at them???HARD!!!! almost impossible. Hence our last ranked run D….Again we need “TALENT” ant the DT spot….none of our guys show that.imho….or we wouldnt be having this convo..on last point…If Marcus allen wasnt complete garbage then why didnt we retain him??? I’ve been around plenty of people in various trades who, over time and familiarity, lost respect for the fact that were working with tools that could kill them. Don’t know Jimenez’ story but…
Rockstar,
my father’s side of the family were coal diggers in Wales going back into the mists of time. In fact, when one of them finally crawled up out of the pit long enough to take a boat to this continent he promptly looked for another coal hole to crawl into in the Midwest. My father himself was the very first family male NOT to do this (his brothers did). There has to be a name for such lack of insight, lack of imagination and superlative ignorance. And it is my heritage.

Thanks, BSJ. I guess I’m a Free Agent. Don’t tell Al, he might throw a ton of cash at me if he knew I could cold-call 400+ calls a day. That should roughly be the equivalent of a 4.41 forty.
Anyone see the NFL live show yesterday on ESPN, or more importantly the last 30 seconds? They mentioned the Russell private workout with WR’s thing, said it was a good sign and moved on to D-Mac should breakout this year. Refreshing to hear Golic and Eric Allen say something positive, must have been like pulling teeth. If STink were there he would have had something smart to say I’m sure.
June 19th, 2009 at 9:42 am
ESPN segment asked who is more likely NOT to be a bust, Russell or McFadden. They both picked McFadden(shocker) and neither said anything about a breakout year. But why let the facts get in the way of a good story?
June 19th, 2009 at 9:43 am
You lost me with 194 Oak …
I don’t get that post at all.
Not sure how our DTs being solid, and VW being on his way out of NE are contradicting.

That was one of his best pieces. He was dead on about the Kobe overkill and the different angles that could have been pursued instead.
But what else can you expect from BSPN?
Totally agreed with the point he made about PJ giving Kobe that “married” look at the end of game 2. Tell me you weren’t ?ing that “look” from PJ when it actually happened? LOL! You just couldn’t explain that facial expression and non reaction to Kobe slapping the chair. That was classic!

If you want guys that shoot themselves in the leg, stomp on people’s heads, can’t cover in man to man, are over the hill, care more about money than winning, get beat up in Vegas, have had major knee injuries, or have major holes in their games…then free agency is the place to shop!
I think Al learned that lesson the hard way last year.

U.S. Military Set to Intercept North Korean Ship Suspected of Proliferating Missiles, Nukes
Friday, June 19, 2009
The U.S. military is planning to intercept a flagged North Korean ship suspected of proliferating weapons material in violation of a U.N. Security Council resolution passed last Friday, FOX News has learned.
The USS John McCain, a navy destroyer, will intercept the ship Kang Nam as soon as it leaves the vicinity off the coast of China, according to a senior U.S. defense official. The order to inderdict has not been given yet, but the ship is getting into position.
The ship left a port in North Korea Wednesday and appears to be heading toward Singapore, according to a senior U.S. military source. The vessel, which the military has been tracking since its departure, could be carrying weaponry, missile parts or nuclear materials, a violation of U.N. Resolution 1874, which put sanctions in place against Pyongyang.
The USS McCain was involved in an incident with a Chinese sub last Friday – near Subic Bay off the Philippines.

June 19th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Priesttj,
The Titans wanted to re-sign Albert Haynesworth. They just weren’t willing to pay $50 million guaranteed! The Titans were so upset with the speed that Haynesworth signed with Washington that they went ahead and filed TAMPERING CHARGES!
As for Vince Wilfork. The Patriots have to manage their cap. They will have to re-sign Tom Brady next year. Right now he is paid less than all the rookie draft picks the last 4 years, Matt Cassell, Peyton Manning and others. How much is he going to get? They also have to pay Richard Seymour, Logan Mankins. Not to mention having guys like Moss and Welker on the roster.
So they have to make difficult choices. YOU CAN’T PAY EVERYBODY! Wilfork is a great player who is going to command a high salary. THe Pats have to make a decision. Has nothing to do with talent or what they think of him. That’s why they drafted Ron Brace! Unlike here, some teams PROACTIVELY plan for the future!
Perhaps if the Raiders didn’t GROSSLY overpay Tommy Kelly, the Pats could re-sign their nose tackle.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:31 am
For the $ we’d have to pay Wilfork on top of what we are paying Kelly, Warren, and Sands … I just can’t warm up to Wilfork. The scenario and timinig just isn’t right for Wilfork, IMO.
I like the guys we have, and would like to add a 4th guy, a young guy in next years draft.

And you won’t hear me complain about Huff. I have him penciled in as the starting FS.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:35 am
JHill,
I admire your confidence in the DTs play in the face of overwhelming evidence that suggests the contrary.
Go get that Sands jersey and hope he makes the roster.
Here’s the bottom line. The Raiders don’t value D-Lineman and there strategy is to focus on pass defense and GET BY on run defense. No problem with the strategy as long as the offense scores a bunch of points.
Look at the draft. They pick up pass rushers and defensive backs. The two LBs they drafted are known more for their pass coverage and speed and not so much for their toughness. The Raiders have not spent a 1st day draft pick on a stout DE, run-stopping LB or DT in years.
They rely on long-shots UFAs like Franz Joseph, Ricky Brown, Tommy Kelly or free agent longshots like 7th round pick NFL Europe refugee (and twice cut) Terdell Sands. Gerard Warren was a castoff from Denver (and spare me the “defensive philosophy changed in Denver B.S”
The Raiders are a finesse defense. Not a smash mouth, physical, win in December type of defense.
Hell, you’d think the Raiders played in a Dome…..That’s how the team is built….with the exception of Michael Bush, who had to bully his way into the lineup!

Jhill, your take on the DTs is just silly. Explain your thoughts please.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:40 am
JHill,
Michael Huff is diggity diggity diggity DONE my friend!
You don’t go and reach 3 rounds to draft Mike Mitchell if you have confidence in a former 7th overall draft pick. Michael Huff is still struggling.
Tom Cable benched him the first chance he could for Hiram Eugene. In fact, Rashad Baker was getting more time.
Huff is DONE unless there is a miracle in camp. Starters will be Eugene and Branch in the two safety system with Mike Mitchell taking over by the end of the year.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:40 am
Jhill: the problem with our DT’s is we have 3 or 4 UT guys and only 1 NT. Kelly, Warren, Joseph & Boschetti are not NT’s. Not solid run stuffers who occupy 1 or more OL and allow our other DT and LB to come in and hit a RB behind the LOS
Sands is the only NT and he’s very inconsistant. He might have one big game and follow it up with 10 terrible ones. often disappears. gets beat down by smaller, more aggressive OL (not just the mammoth OL or pro bowlers) …
If we’re going to pay Kelly all that money and expect him to become one of the best DT’s in the game – fine. But we’re going to need a NT next to him to make his job easier. Warren should be Kelly’s back up, or at least rotate with him to keep eachother fresh and healthy.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:42 am

=======================================================
Mitchell will take over for Eugene at some point in the year. Mitchell won’t start opening day.
He’s going to play because the Raiders drafted him in the 2nd round AND Mitchell was one of the top players on the Raiders board. The criticism they got afterwards will only strengthen their resolve to get him on the field.
Fortunately for the Raiders, Mike Mitchell has a winning attitude and is a physical player. Question that remains is if he can mentally adjust to the NFL game and the change in speed from the MAc to the NFL.

Then explain to me why the hell it even matters. Line up in front of your guy and maul him. It’s that simple.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:48 am
JHill,
The FS and SS positions are going to more similiar this year. I think Marshall will be playing with a two back safety as opposed to that FS on an island B.S that Ryan and Davis ran last year.
Cable talked about playing both of them.
The Raiders love Tyvon Branch…and rightfully so…The Raiders do not like Michael Huff. Cable benched him at the 1st opportunity and Davis blamed Shell for drafting him.
Plus, Huff is still looking awful out there and is clearly behind EUgene in the depth charts.
Do you believe in miracles? Cause I don’t!
June 19th, 2009 at 10:51 am
Realistically, I think we are looking at Eugene at FS and Mitchell at SS. I think Huff will continue to play that “rover” role and be the 3rd DB on the field.
You keep saying he got benched S&B, but that’s very misleading. He played A LOT last year at FS, SS, and CB.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:51 am
S&B makes a good point. Al Davis drafts guys in skill positions WAY more than he drafts grunts to protect his investments. I was shocked when Norv Turner/AD drafted Gallery & Grove in the 2004 draft!
the zbs is known for taking late round draft picks, undrafted guys, scrub free agents or versatile players from the old system and forming a solid unit with great run blocking ability. However, we’ve seen Sims & Harris flop at LT the last 2 years and Carlisle had a rough time last season. Green is not a starter (as Jerry points out, nor did they intend for him to be) yet they make no effort to replace him.
the D-Line has been suspect talent-wise for years. We’ve brought in Sapp, Dana Stubblefield, Ted Washington, etc under Rob Ryan and all of them failed miserably at stopping the run
June 19th, 2009 at 10:52 am
JHill,
I have been and continue to be a JaMarcus Russell supporter. I like him and see what he can become. I actually like the offense going into the year.
The defense? I can’t get with you on Terdell and Gerard. Like Rockstar said, the Raiders have a bunch of 3-techs playing out of position. Warren SHOULD be backing up Kelly and possibly coming in on definite passing downs.
It gets back to the Raider pass-oriented finesse defensive strategy. They place a premium on “trying” to get QB pressure at the risk of getting scraped against the run.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:53 am
Raider O, no offense w/ the Latka remark. I loved that show! We need an Elaine in here…
June 19th, 2009 at 10:54 am
Jhill,
If the Raider DTs are so good, why cant the Raiders stop the run, EVER?
Huff got benched. Plain and simple.
Do you even watch the games?
Mitchell is going to start over Branch? Dont think so.
June 19th, 2009 at 10:55 am
I think we are looking at Eugene at FS and Mitchell at SS. I think Huff will continue to play that “rover” role and be the 3rd DB on the field.
***
Agreed. Branch was drafted to replace Jarrod Cooper and be the ST gunner – not to be a future starter at SS. Mitchell is a SS, not a FS … these guys will compete for the job as Eugene & Huff will compete for the FS job
may the best men win (not the guy on scholarship!)
June 19th, 2009 at 11:01 am
I know one thing for certain. While watching the games the last 2 years I cant even count the amount of times CBS would show a replay of Sands getting either absolutely manhandled by some smaller guard or flat out rolling over on a play. Terdell Sands is the type of player that this team does not need and anyone who defends him is ignorant.
June 19th, 2009 at 11:01 am
I will give Kelly a free pass given his knee injury. But he has not demonstrated to this point that he is one of the top 3 or 4 DTs in the league. He is paid like one.
As for Gerard Warren…He’s a penetrator, but on run plays he needs to clog running lanes a force offenses to put two hats on him. He does not do that consistently.
Terdell Sands was supposed to be the wall up the middle. He’s paid in the top 25% of all DTs….so let’s not use the “he’s a backup” excuse.
Boschetti and Joseph are rotation guys….and that’s fine because their paychecks and previous work history support that.
Although, had they drafted Ron Brace…then you could rotate Kelly/Warren at UT and Brace/Sands at NT and be all set.
Oh well

June 19th, 2009 at 11:03 am
The Raiders can’t stop the run on occasions because Burgess, Edwards, Morrison, Richards all are WAY below average run defenders who need to be replaced.
You guys want a DTs who can take up two players so those guys can run “free”. Well I’m of the belief that these guys, the NFL caliber guys that is, should be able to beat 1 guy and make a play. They should be able to fill their gap and allow the OTHER guy to make a play.

Jhill: just because a guy has the size to play a position doesn’t mean he has the skill set. Otherwise Russell could be a lineman, Bush would be a FB, Mike Williams would have been a TE (like Randal Williams & John Madsen), Janikowski would be a LB, Doug Flutie and Troy Smith would be kickers, etc etc

I would have been happy because then the defensive lineup would have been technically sound.
You have the UTs playing their position and the run stopping NT playing their position. Of course I am assuming that Tommy Kelly will step up his play. Gerard Warren is out of position.
Ron Brace would be a huge upgrade over having Gerard Warren playing the wrong position. As for Terdell Sands…notice how I still have him as the depth guy…where he belongs.
Brace was drafted by Bill Belicheck. They even traded up with our speed oriented management to get the job done. That alone suggests he has some excellent potential. yes, his track record has been that good.

SnB and Dude,
I agree with you, undersized and never made the rotation except after injuries.
He added weight and he is 235 now, he was practicing with the 1st unit, but that does mean much now. I want to see how they all play in pre season. That will tell us a lot.

Oh Dakota, if you are looking for something to do on Saturday night, the Catfish Bay Ski Club is having a free show at Canyon Lake at 7pm. Take the advice of organizer Robert Mudge: “Consider this an early Father’s Day gift. Come early, bring a picnic basket and find a spot along the lake.”
In other town happenings, tests show that the dog that attacked Rapid City resident Nicholas Byers Tuesday did not have rabies. Just in case you knew him and were worried.
(I love the internet!).

because we didn’t draft the players you wanted we didn’t do anything to help improve certain positions?we drafted LBs and DEs-positions some of us,including the organization, believed needed improvement for our Def. to improve.you totally downplay our draft picks and pin your hopes on an UDFA-Joseph.i just don’t see the logic in your reasoning.are you really saying that the draft picks will be failures because you did’nt want them, you wanted someone else?

Wow. in all of the OTA’s Jerry Mac watched 2 of the 3 players who have played “especially bad” are Russell and Heyward-Bey
but he’d still take JaWalrus over Orton. LOL!
Orton?? The same Orton that threw 5 interceptions in practice the day after the Broncos named him the starter? The same Orton that originally lost his job to Rex Grossman and only got it back when Grossman and Griese completely fell apart? That Orton?
