Sunday notes

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, July 19th, 2009 at 9:25 am in Oakland Raiders.

A few Sunday morning notes:

– From the Twitter account of Nate Haber, agent for Raiders rookie sixth-round draft pick Brandon Myers: “Long day ahead… TE Brandon Myers will sign his contract today in Oakland. He was a non-combine invite out of Iowa, drafted in round 6.”

Will the Raiders announce any signings, or just wait until they all show up at camp? Doesn’t matter much either way, their track record of getting players in on time (other than one notable exception) is pretty good . . .

I hesitate to call Myers’ the Raiders first signing, because they could have signed everyone but Darrius Heyward-Bey by now and simply chose not to say anything about it . . .

– ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli warns not to be surprised if the Raiders still deal defensive end Derrick Burgess to New England.

Be very surprised, however, if it’s a dump job (fourth-round pick or later), because Al Davis still regrets the Randy Moss deal. Moss’ name is probably somewhere prominent in the thousands of pages of legal notes compiled in the Lane Kiffin file.

– If the Raiders do trade Burgess, do they try and sign Stryker Sulak? Teams dump undrafted free agents all the time and bring them back. From a business sense, the Raiders would pay little or no signing bonus instead of the $80,000 or so they were facing.

Of course, if there’s another offer out there, Sulak is going to take it after being placed on the waiver wire without any notice from the Raiders.

– Was asked whether Ray Guy, Ken Stabler or Cliff Branch would make it to the Hall of Fame and if all three players would eventually make it to Canton for a Page 2 feature.

My response?

“The best chance of the three probably belongs to Ray Guy, and even then it would probably be with the veteran’s committee deciding to let in the sport’s all-time best punter. Stabler’s problem is that he had several mediocre years and a short time as a premier quarterback. Branch’s numbers have been devalued by the inflated numbers of today’s wide receivers because of strict rules regarding pass defense.”

Before I get buried for Raider hating, keep the question in mind. I wasn’t asked if I thought they should be in the Hall of Fame, I was asked if they would eventually make the Hall of Fame. Two very different things.

Whether old-guard football-types like it or not, a punter is part of a football team and the best one ever should be in the Hall of Fame. At some point, I think this will be realized _ hopefully while Guy is still alive _ and he’ll make his way to Canton.

Branch was a more productive player than Lynn Swann in every area except Super Bowl highlights (although Branch had some Super Bowl moments of his own). He should be in, as well, certainly before Tim Brown, for example.

Don’t see it happening, however, with the flood of receivers with bigger stats that don’t mean nearly as much.

I think of Stabler at his peak and my knee-jerk reaction is that he was a Hall of Fame quarterback, one of the best that ever played. But Stabler’s peak also coincided with the time I was a fan, not part of the media, and was skewed by the fact that I was sitting in the Coliseum in some of his greatest moments and had a rooting interest.

A lot of people revel in Stabler’s days as a hard-partying quarterback who led comebacks while hung over, and it does make for a great story. But it also made him old before his time, and the way he played in later years with the Oilers and Saints are part of his overall legacy.

As the biased guy who sat in the stands and watched Stabler play as a Raider, I think, yes, he’s a Hall of Famer. But as a detached sports writer, I can see the other side.

Besides, Davis is pushing harder for Jim Plunkett, anyway.

Which is another issue entirely.

    Dakota,

I think Tom Cable has a “netflix” coaching style

    no late fees, ever!

Who knows what caused Sands to lose weight? Marshall, Board or Cable perhaps? No matter how you look at it, you have to be motivated and disciplined to lose weight. Who knows how a reduced weight will effect his play on the field, but just the thought of him being motivated is improvement in my book! Lets see if he can be consistant, rather than playing big in one game and disappearing for the next 3 …

RaiderRockstar, if you want to please the woman in your life with video rentals & still “please” yourself rent “Ask the Dust” your woman will think you are an intellectual because it’s a true story about an author neither of you have heard of BUT Salma Hayek goes nude swimming for about 5 min. in it. It’s early on so you can sleep thru the last half.lol.
If you like Salma then make it a double feature with
Frida where she has a lessie scene in the middle of it. The story’s better (maybe because I’m a sucker for artist movies) if you can put up with her mex- unibrow she’s sporting. Anyway theyre still better than any Sandra Bullock b*llsh^t. How many times can a woman watch Miss Congeniality 6?????
    lol

  • AZ Raider

Hopefully being the 31st ranked defense had something to do with it. It helps to have a little pride is the NFL IMHO.

  • RaiderRockstar

    thanks for the advice/tips/pointers TW.

“Anyway theyre still better than any Sandra Bullock b*llsh^t.”

Funny you mentioned that. She wants to see that movie ‘The Proposal’ with her and Ryan Reynolds in it. LOL

  • AZ Raider

“Knowing” was good, we watched that last week. Both enjoyed it.

    Rockstar,

I saw The Proposal at the wife’s request….I’ve seen worse chick flicks, so if it will make your woman happy, this might be one to go to….

Pride in what? Punching Shane Lecher?

It didn’t effect him the past 2 seasons!

I’m guessing they told him to come to camp in shape and motivated or he’s out the door …

  • AZ Raider

Anyways… Raiders… Ummmmmm, yeah…. CAMP! Kill ‘em Cable, KILL ‘EM!

  • AZ Raider

That’d be good enough for me I guess. It took a beating over the head of Henderson to convince him he could start at LT in this league LOL… Turns out he’s not bad.

  • AZ Raider

Nothing wrong with punching a kicker either, as long as it’s in the face and not his leg.

  • AZ Raider

If I was mad and needed to punch someone, I’d find the closest kicker!

  • AZ Raider

Jano, might have put up more of a fight LOL…

I’ve heard the same from some buddies of mine. Thanks Dakota

AZ: yes, ‘Knowing’ was pretty good … kinda

for a believer, such as Raider O and myself it’s a bit sketchy. I thought those beings were actually angels until they went up in the spaceship. then it was like they had adam & eve with the tree of life over again. I guess if you take it for what it is (a fictional movie) it’s very interesting. Don’t know why’d they’d throw so much religion in it though

  • AZ Raider

    Just another prospective RR…

The coaches feel they have all the horses they need for an elite defense. Now that the draft and free agency is over….the coaches opinions are good enough for me. Its time to fall in and give these coaches a chance to turn these guys into elite talents they are paid to be.

Greg Ellis can play the run better than Burgess

Tommy Kelly is two yrs removed from knee surgery

Gerard Warren hopefully is healed up

Terdell Sands has all the potential in the world…hopefully Board can harness it

Trevor Scott gained some weight and is determined to be a full time DE

Burgess is in a contract year

Kirk Morrison had 100+ tackles last yr…and is looking to play more downhill

Thomas Howard hopefully will be called upon to provide pressure

Alston can run and so can Slade Norris…not to mention that Ricky Brown was effective until he got injured.

If the coaching staff is as good as advertised….I am hoping for a top 10 defense in 2009

    LMAO

Punch kickers and punters! Show no mercy! lol

If you get a chance Death Race is showing on cable Jason Stratham & Ian McShane. Ian McShane was great in Deadwood, I’d watch anything that guy does. Sexy Beast also good.
Also Hell Ride is good Robert Rodriguez directs. Michael Madsen, Dennis Hopper, Vinnie Jones, David Carradine & lots of mammories.
If you haven’t seen Snatch 20 times watch it again, best Guy Ritchie movie before Madonna ruined him.

  • AZ Raider

SnB, if we can make a jump to 20th, I’d be happy with the progress.

  • AZ Raider

Death Race, hahahahaha! Good movie if all your looking for is explosions and carnage :) . I enjoyed it!

S&B: the Raiders are calling Matt Shaughnessy a base end, even though you don’t. What are your thoughts & opinions on him? Despite injuries throughout his college career (that he played through!) he’s been healthy at camp & OTA’s … How much of an impact do you think he can have in his rookie season ??? Trevor Scott was a 6th round rookie last year and got considerable playing time due to injuries suffered by Burgess & Edwards

  • SnB Defense

    AZ Raider,

I think 20th is very pedestrian for a team that has two lockdown cornerbacks.

One side of the field is shut down…not even the Steelers or Ravens can say they can do that.

Tom Cable knows his job is always on the line. He is very confident in the talent that’s there. The guys they have are just inconsistent…and mistake proned…they have the physical talent and certainly have the speed.

The only position I could see the Raiders trying to upgrade in 2010 would be SLB. Other than that…they have all the talent they think they need.

In Cable we trust right? If the defensive players are fired up about the coaching and the system…then I am too.

    I still say top 10 defense….

    Top 5 in pass defense
    Top 15 in run defense

    True story:

I was talking religion with a friend who is a non believer, and we were talking about miracles. She said that it’s not miracles, but they were scientific phenomenas. I agree, but the timing was the miracle. It happened when it was needed, that’s the miracle.
I told her about a hanging rock as a miracle, so she said that’s a miracle. When I told her such a rock is available, she said it was a science phenomena.

Perception: I see miracles that can be explained by science, and she so scientific phenomenas.

  • RaiderRockstar

Raider O: I didn’t mean to open this can of worms or drag you into it. sorry

All I will say is this… there are MANY things that cannot be explained by science and theories should not be taught to children in school as fact

i’m done with this convo before people start getting hateful. Go Raiders!

  • AZ Raider

    Raider O,

I want you to grab a book, it’s not about religion but about the nature of partical physics.

    Called:

    The Devine Matrix
    by: Gregg Braden

Absolutely the best read EVER IMO. Talks about the nature of miracles as well and gives an awsome perspective on God and the universe.

Not that good. I had heat exhaustion, and I had to go to the hospital.

    =======================================================
I don’t know enough about Shaughnessy’s game. He is known for playing with high energy. He is a 265-270 DE. That’s a little on light side when I think of a base DE. Regardless, I don’t see him making a large impact this year unless they feel he’s a better option than Jay Richardson. Otherwise I thin he will have to wait until 2010 to really get on the field.

As for Trevor Scott, he is my favorite D-Lineman. I am hoping they are using him is a rush end and that he can hold up against the run. I hope he is the starter. His strength is the pass rush. If Warren and Sands are as good as advertised then Scott should get more one-on-one opportunities.

  • http://atm Raider O

    RR,

Don’t be sorry bro, and you didn’t drag me into anything. lol
I understood what you said, but I was going to share this story anyways. lol

Morrison, Howard, Brown, Alston & Williams are all unrestricted free agents at LB. Same for Eugene at FS and Burgess at DE. and we still haven’t seen how well Greg Ellis will play at DE after spending the last 3 years as a stand up pass rusher OLB, who has a ton of wear on the tires. William Joseph & Ryan Boschetti will also not be under contract. one or both of them will be getting a significant numbers of snaps in the DT rotation
