Hold the lights

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, July 23rd, 2009 at 2:30 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders released the times of their practices through the first weekend of training camp in Napa, and as expected, they will not have evening sessions.

In training camps under Lane Kiffin, the Raiders would spread out the amount of time between practices by having double sessions at 8:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., always followed the next day by a single practice in the middle of the day.

The reasoning was the time off gave the Raiders more time off to heal, and Kiffin credited the system with keeping the team relatively healthy during training camp under his watch.

With Tom Cable in charge, the Raiders are going old school. They will have double sessions for the first four days of camp, with practices at 8:30 a.m. and 4:20 p.m. on July 30, July 31, Aug. 1 and Aug. 2.

Ordinarly, teams will go in pads for only one of the double sessions.

The team is scheduled to report to the Napa Marriott Tuesday, with Cable available for the first time the Wednesday at noon on the fields at Redwood Middle School behind the hotel. It is at that time Cable will likely update the status of the draft class (they’ll probably all be signed, even if the club doesn’t announce it beforehand) and give updates on which players may not be available to practice due to injury.

The Raiders will have no practices Wednesday, instead having meetings throughout the day to prepare for the double sessions to follow.

Count it as another instance where the Raiders have been de-Kiffinized. Cable also got rid of the music which played during warmups under Kiffin’s watch.

The Raiders released no information beyond the first four days of practice.

The 49ers announced they will be in Napa for double sessions on Aug. 18 and 19 in preparation for the preseason game that week against the Raiders.

Practice sessions are closed to the general public although the Raiders often have groups visiting such as season ticket holders, advertisers and business associates.

The media talks with Cable every day after practice with team members available for interviews after they’re done working out before lunch.

The Raiders are going old school?

  3. jhill Says:

I am not wasting anymore of my time talking about Warren = you don’t know?

Seriously, I don’t recall an injury to Warren the first year we got him, and I’m not the look it up type. You brought it up, so it’s cool if you want to drop it.

  4. Dakota Says:

Jhill, of course I know, it is just pointless to even talk about the POS…he was out four games with a quad…cripes…another minute of my life wasted on G. Warren…thanks Jhill.

  5. jhill Says:

    LOL Dakota …

Ok, fine! I don’t recall you clamoring for DTs in the draft, or any Haynesworth pleas.

  6. Dakota Says:

Jhill, you don’t remember my love affair with Ron Brace this year or Red Bryant in the 2008 draft? I’ve been begging for DT help for years….Sands and that other guy need replacing soon, like before the fuking season!

  7. SnB Defense Says:

Guys shouldn’t be so down on the team going into camp. For the 1st time in a while, the head coach believes in the roster as-is.

The O-Line is built the way Cable and Davis want it. They have confidence in Mario Henderson to man the LT and that confidence is deserved. They like Gallery..he is almost pro-bowl level. They like Satele enough not to draft one…and Carlisle, Pears, Green and McQuistan provides enough competition.

As for the Defense..its the same deal…Cable like Kelly/Warren/Sands….they added Ellis to upgrade the defensive end…and they like Scott. Burgess is thought of well enough to not trade him and Shaughnessy provides depth….

They like Howard and Morrison…and Alston/Brown is the anser for the SLB….Slade Norris is the developmental guy…as is Chris O’Neil.

The bottom line is that Davis, Cable, Marshall like the roster as is and drafted for the positions they felt needed upgrading.

Let’s let training camp sort it out.

As long as Russell, DMAC, Bush and Schilens are on the field…it should be all good

  8. jhill Says:

Anti Sands stuff, backup DTs, yes. Ron Brace would not have replaced Warren or Kelly.

  9. 24 Says:

JHill – My team name is always San Jose Raiders. I wouldn’t pass up on Zach Miller because hes a good TE but he may not get me the fantasy points with only 4 TD’s and I look at that as well but hes definitely a good option. If I was confident in JR and if I knew Miller spent more time pass catching instead of blocking, that would make a big difference as well. There are so many variables. McFadden is an unknown at this point and your team should be strong with RB’s. I would go for TD machines first. I would try to get 2 proven RB’s and then McFadden would be a really nice 3rd RB selection later on if he was still available.

I could always take the gamble on him early but that could hurt my team if he proves to be not durable or the Raider offense sputters like they have over the last 6 years. The funny thing is…all the solid backs I usually choose either get hurt or don’t play well and I end up finding gems in the free agent market usually. You just never know but when it comes to the Raiders…I’ll choose the players if they’re proven and put up stats. Rich Gannon was a classic example of a guy who could win you fantasy games.

Seabass? We’d need to score more points as an offense and get closer to the redzone for me to choose Seabass, otherwise I’m going with a top notch kicker because those guys can give you alot of fantasy points if you get good kickers on high octane offenses.

  10. 24 Says:

Gerard Warren has been our best and most consistent DT. That may not be a good thing but it says alot in comparison to the rest of the guys including Kelly.

  11. Dakota Says:

Jhill, I’ll remember you said that when Ron Brace is the Starting NT for the Patriots 14 months from now…couldn’t replace that guy you seem to keep wasting our time on, lol…good one.

I guess I shouldn’t expect much more from the guy that thought KC would draft Crabtree and that the Lakers couldn’t win with Gasol.

    just kidding, lol

I think thats WAY TOO MUCH coverage for something that is overwhelming already.

  13. jhill Says:

    LOL …

Who did you have KC picking?

And I said they couldn’t win with Gasol at C.

  14. CJ Legend 34 Says:

Ellis was a good pick up.

We may actually have a blitz this year with the DEs we have. Will “I am” Smith better step his game up!

  15. Dakota Says:

    24,

That is so lame…3 day draft…man, you don’t even get warmed up until 4 hours into the draft! That sucks.

  16. CJ Legend 34 Says:

  17. NoMoreFargas Says:

Every time I think of D-hall I get sick could just started johnson and drafted D.Jackson. 24 you’re right on Warren was by far our best DT last year. Wow zito actually pitched well when the team needed it who would have ever guessed .

  18. 24 Says:

I sure hope Marshall blitzes and does things differently than whats been done over the last 10 years because I’m sick and tired of watching the same thing. Watch…we’ll come out blitzing in the first game and Al Davis will have a talking with Marshall and we won’t see any blitzing in the 2nd game.

  19. 24 Says:

NoMoreFargas – Somehow I thought D Hall would look pretty good. I thought he was overrated but I didn’t realize he was THAT bad. The reason I didn’t like the Hall trade was because he gave away Asomugha’s money to someone else and that was stupid all by itself and put us in the hole. Yeah…Zito pitched well but more importantly, the team actually gave him run support unlike all his other starts. You have to admit, Zito has pitched 10x better this year but we seriously need to trade for a bat and the Randy Johnson injury has hurt us terribly. I honestly wanted the Giants to Johnathan Sanchez right after his no-no because he will never look as good as that.

If the Giants scored more runs, Zito would have more games won.

  21. 24 Says:

I meant…I thought the Giants should have traded Sanchez right after his no-no.

  22. Dakota Says:

24, I have never bought into the hole idea that Al doesn’t like to blitz…the DC during the 2002 season sure did blitz alot and he never stopped due to a phone call from Al Davis…then again, maybe that is why he wasn;t our DC anymore? lol

  23. SnB Defense Says:

Its no longer about whether the fans like the talent on the roster. The coaches chose to stick with the players on the roster when there were options to make a change.

Assuming everyone wants to win, you have to believe the coaches think they have the tools available to win.

The defense really should be a top 15 unit. The only weakness the coaches saw was at safety…and they drafted Mike Mitchell to fix it.

They went for depth at wide receiver to increase big-play capability and multiple looks.

They believe in the O-Line and D-Line as is….let’s give the coaches a chance to provide some much needed discipline and skills to make up for the ATROCIOUS coaching decisions Davis has made in the past

  24. Scottish Raider Says:

I am still having nightmares about our 2009 draft class:

Round 1: We took DHB but we could have taken a 10 year OT starter – Eugene Monroe. That might haunt us for a decade if Henderson doesn’t deliver.

Round 2: We gambled on Mitchell but we could have had safe Oline bets in Phil Loadholt or Max Unger.

Round 3: We took Shaughnessy but Ramses Barden was still on the Board. He might be the steal of the draft.

Round 4: Louis Murphy – no problem, smart pick. Norris was a real gamble, especially with the likes of McRath and Kropog still available. And I still don’t believe the Bears would have taken Mitchell in the 2nd or 3rd!

Round 6: Sulak – waste. He was another doomed Lombardi-style tweener. We could have taken Myers and saved a trade.

The Jags picking one spot after us took a completely different approach. They looked after the lines with their first three picks – and then took ’skill’ players in the lower rounds.

    1) Eugene Monroe OT
    2) Eben Britton OT
    3) Terrence Knighton DT
    3) Derrick Cox CB
    4) Mike Thomas WR
    5) Jarett Dillard WR
    6) Zach Miller TE
    7) Rashad Jennings RB

Perhaps that is why the Jags are 10+ places above us in most pre-season power rankings?

  25. 24 Says:

Dakota – You talking about Bresnahan? I wasn’t a big fan of him in general but maybe the blitzing did cause him to get fired or it was a purge of the coaching staff when Callahan was out and Turner was in.

  26. 24 Says:

Dakota – Also…I don’t remember him blitzing alot btw.

  27. NoMoreFargas Says:

You’re right 24 they gave a stat during game said 7 times zito has gotten 0 run damn even koufax can’t win with 0 runs.

    No prob hayes…

where are all your haters? I have fun punking them when they try and trash you LOL.

  32. 24 Says:

NoMoreFargas – I think we should trade Sanchez for a bat and bring up some young guys from AAA and work with them. They can’t be any better or worse than Sanchez and without run support, great pitching is wasted.

  33. 24 Says:

I just hope Cable can keep his job. Priority #1.

  34. AZ Raider Says:

    LOL

He’ll have to win 8 games. Reachable goal.

  35. 909RaiderLifer Says:

    “de-Kiffinized”…..lol

  36. SnB Defense Says:

    Scottish Raider Post 24,

I think after the Robert Gallery and Jake Grove experience….Al Davis is very wary of using high picks on lineman.

My guess…opinion…is that Davis looks at Kelly/Warren/Sands/Henderson/Carlisle/Scott and others and feels that he can get decent enough line talent in late rounds or free agency.

Davis focuses the picks on skill position players…I also feel that will be the strategy going forward.

Have to hope the coaches can teach up the players they have on the roster…which I think they can.

Although a Vince Wilfork for Burgess would be nice

  37. 24 Says:

We just might win again under a no salary cap era. Thats when Al Davis was dominant. When you don’t put restrictions on how much Davis can pay out…things change. We’ll see.

  38. HayesDaze37 Says:

AZ — I try to fend them off with common sense…it’s all we can do. And, it’s never enough!

Scottish — Great post. Except for the fact that draft choices are about 50-50 to have an impact for their team AT BEST, I’d agree with you almost down the line.

There are NO safe O-line bets coming out of college. Ask Gallery. Expecting Cable’s OL to be at least no worse than last year’s, and knowing the odds of drafting starter-ready players out of college, the team HAD to take a chance on a different position this year.

Since Al knew he needed to fix his receiver corps, he went and got who could be the next great Raiders WR in DHB, and just as possibly in Louis Murphy. What a draft, if they’re both for real!

And with Mitchell…if he’s the guy The Man (and others) wanted, he’s the guy we HAD to go get, or he wouldn’t be there next pick. Sulak? Has he signed anywhere yet? If not, he can be invited back. Notice the Raiders still haven’t said anything about him.

All those draft picks by Jacksonville have the same statistical chance to make/contribute to their team as the Raiders draft picks do.

So — even though, there a lots of different ways to draft…I don’t think the Raiders draft was a nightmare. That, we won’t know until at least next off-season.

  39. HayesDaze37 Says:

24 — Even Al doesn’t put restrictions on how much he spends, salary cap or no salary cap. Either Al can get it done, or he can’t — and it doesn’t matter what year. Al was allegedly washed-up last time he put together a team that made a few runs…and that was in the salary cap & free agent era.

  40. 24 Says:

We can blame Al Davis and the draft picks but in reality…you can blame the inconsistency in the coaching staff and that is the main reason we have had failed experiments with draft picks. When you draft players, you draft them to fit your system and when the coaches all change, the systems change as well and the players are never able to get acclimated to whats going on with all the constant changing. Now…we can also say that Al Davis is always trying to keep his system similiar with each coaching staff so I don’t know but its not easy for players to develop when they don’t have the proper leadership and the consistent direction.

  41. 24 Says:

HayesDaze37 – True but it hasn’t happened without a strong money man sitting next to him like Bruce Allen either and I know Allen may not have done well in some regard in Tampa but I’ll say it again…Gruden/Allen and Davis all made a good team. Theres no other way to look at it then that. Al Davis was willing to pay the players, Allen was willing to crunch the numbers and Gruden was able to coach them up. The consistency really helped as well. Without a salary cap at least…it just helps a little more.

  42. 24 Says:

Plus…one coach may like a player and the new coach comes in and hates that player. Its just tough. Gallery was turning into crap until Cable got there. Imagine if we would have continued to have coaches that didn’t know what to do with him. For all we know…Cable could have turned Gallery into a Top LT had he been around when Gallery got drafted but the previous coaching staffs ruined him.

  43. 24 Says:

    Gotta go for now. Peace.

  44. jhill Says:

Agreed on the coaches 24 …

I’ll say it again, the only real mistake Al has mad is how he has handled the coaching situation.

  45. HayesDaze37 Says:

And, AZ — The troll haters (not just the haters) get banned off and on. When one’s been gone for more than 36-hours, you can figure he’s on restriction for awhile (or forever).

Even the sometimes-likeable KK has been on restriction from here before…to the point where he “threatened” to sue BANG/MNG for discrimination. What a crack up. He thinks they shook in their boots and caved. Even funnier.

  46. Nnamdi21 Says:

    Whoo hoo! camp!

  47. Twocents Says:

My take on Cable is that he is smart enough to know that he has to work within the “Raider” system. And I think he is okay with that.

Another blog mentioned the relationship between the HC and the QB. Russell and Cable are joined at the hip. If Russell succeeds, Cable will be our HC for a long time. ( Long time in Raiderland = 2-3 years.)

  48. HayesDaze37 Says:

24 — Can’t argue with the success they had together…but, I think Gannon had as much to do with it as any of the people mentioned above. It also shows just how hard it is to find the right mixture of coaches/players/administrators to be a special kind of team. Those mixtures are oft-times volatile, too!

  49. HayesDaze37 Says:

Twocents — If Russell and Cable shine together, they’ll probably be together for more than 3-years… unless somebody offers millions of $$ and draft picks for Cable in 3-years!

Hey, it happened with Gruden…and if anybody says they would’ve seen that coming when he was hired by Al, THAT person should be our GM.

  50. AZ Raider Says:

24 – DING DING DING!!! WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!

Everyone blames Al for the bone-head coaching changes, and yes he will take responsibilty for it, but really. Besides Gruden, who did we want to keep?

Callahan was an in house guy and the players wanted him, so Al gave him a shot. He did nothing but cut and paste Grudens playbook onto his empty one and used the original in the SB against him – FIRED!

Turner also an in house guy with a great football mind, but obviously not a head coach. Having success in SD is an over-statment. He inherited a team on the verge of a SB and still hasnt gotten to the big show. His tenure in SD has been an extended version of Callahan in Oakland. He’s on his way out. He had problems developing young talent and winning the locker room – FIRED!

Shell was rediculous – the whole staff that was put to gether was a joke and this one is ALL AL DAVIS! – FIRED ANYWAY!

Kiffin interviewed well and convinced the old guy he was the 2nd comming of John Madden. It was clear when he took to the sidelines he was exactly what AL accused him of being – a saboteur looking to gain NFL experience at the Raiders expense. Never attepted to develope Russell, becuase he’s a bigot and a cry baby -FIRED! (WITH CAUSE)

I’m liking what i’ve seen from Cable so far, he reminds me of an Andy Reed guy. Players coach, but with some grit and old school smash mouth in him. We’ll see.

  51. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

AZ, you’re acting like you weren’t one of the people who shilled for every single one of those coaches you’re now decrying, right up to the second Al fired them. Those of us smart fans, on the other hand, called them a joke the second they were hired. You can’t be a dumb ass shill for the coaches when they’re here (your last paragraph…), then act like you’re an authority on their lack of qualifications after they’re canned. After this season, you’re going to be telling us how bad Cable sucks. The smart fans are telling you so RIGHT NOW, while you shill for him. Take a hike, idiot.

  53. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

HayezDaze, Gannon always gives Gruden props for how good that team was, and always talks about the chaos in the front office that both he and Gruden had to contend with, EVERY DAY. He hates the Raiders. Hates Al Davis. Admit it. He just came here on the hire, and no thanks to Al for giving his career a rebirth because he was content with retirement, anyway. He only came here because he liked what Gruden was doing. Stop lying to everyone. F’n liar!

  58. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

909, did he call Kiffin a bigot? I missed that. He’s probably saying that because Kiffin didn’t want to start the 90 year old Culpepper over Mccown, who was far better at running his ball control offense.

  59. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Cable’s an old school Davis puppet, Hayez. You’ve got that right. Two Cents admitted it. Scroll up. You don’t want to know the combined w/l record of Davis puppets since free agency, do you?

    MR,

I’ll admit, I was behind Kiffin because I was intruged by a young guy coming in and shaking things up. Sorry but after his first year I was in the Kiffin bashing club.

You on the other hand bash by statistics. Chances are still good the Raiders have a losing record, but they are just as good we’ll improve on what we saw last season twards the end. Just because you can predict a 5-11 team will go 5-11 again doesnt make your football IQ any higher. Your posts are always negative and derogatory. Your the same as any sports analys out there but with less knowlege and a smaller pay check. Anyone can say the Raiders will suck, but only a man can say he was wrong if they win. So, we’ll see if your in here bashing optimists if the Raiders go 9-7, or will YOU be spitting kool-aid? Chances are your probably just a troll trying to get a rise out of people. Problem is you just sound depressed.

    For the record:

I was crushed and angered when Gruden was traded.

I hated Callahan for his Botched SB playbook.

I knew Turner was a patch and didn’t have the fire and he proved it.

Kiffin? Well I had no idea who he was so I hoped for the best and was dissapointed.

Anyways – Kids call people names and trolls are always negative. So I’m guessing your a 13 year old troll with poor parents who cant regulate your internet usage. But, thank you for your insight! It was enlightning :)

Once again, MR — you prove you just want to throw out BS and hope it grows. Gannon wanted to start, and he knew he wasn’t ready to quit. Period. Gannon content with retirement? Right.

Show where I lie to anyone on here, MR. Show it. You can’t do it.

You continue to show just how immature you are, MR — since you cannot end any discussion without calling someone a name. Very 9-year-old of you, big boy.

Another thing, hypocrite — You say above that Gannon just came to Oakland for the hire…then you say he only came here because of Gruden. What’s that? A contradiction? Coming from MR? Naaah!!

Here’s the ONE true fact you always ignore, MR…the ONE person responsible for bringing Gannon to Oakland is, and always has been, one Al Davis. Gruden didn’t sign that contract.

And…to say that Al/Gruden/Gannon all have to like/love each other is just too simple-minded — respect is enough. Some of the most volatile (even hateful) relationships in football have been wildly successful — and the Raiders were nearly that.

Call me another name, MR — everybody in here (EVERYBODY) knows you’ve got nothing useful to add, so the names will have to do.

  71. 504 Raider Says:

Vick is coming to the Bay, but to play for the 49ers. He could start for them right now.

  72. AZ Raider Says:

    I forgot the Shell regime!

I was sick to my stomach every time I heard an addition to that staff… Was NEVER on the Shell band-wagon.

I’d bet if the Raiders were 10-6 last season, MR would NOT be here saying good things about them. He’s be on the Broncos site bashing thier fans optimism.

  73. HayesDaze37 Says:

504 — If Walker’s healthy, it would be (more) difficult for either DHB or Murphy to start. Each of those guys could end up with as many catches as Javon this year, even if he’s the starter…but if Javon is anything like the excellent WR he WAS, neither of the young guys are likely to have half the catches he gets (and his QB will have a good-to-great year!).

What if Javon IS healthy, and the young guys beat him anyway? That would be dream-come-true stuff. For everybody except Javon, that is.

  75. 504 Raider Says:

    HD37,

If Walker is healthy, look for DHB to supplant Shilens by week 6. Javon would become the go to guy like Michael Irvin and DHB would be the Alvin Harper from the 90s Cowboys. I think JLH is best suited for the slot receiver postion only. He’s too small to be on the outside IMO.

  76. 909RaiderLifer Says:

cr@p. Sorry about that. You guys can find it.

  77. HayesDaze37 Says:

The only reason trolls/MR-types go to the Broncos’ and other sites is to stir the pot…with hopes to entice other BS artists back to this site so they have some confederates to help spread his manure.

What MR finds out, though, is that they think he’s as unreasonable and ill-prepared for discussion as anybody else they have on their sites.

The only thing in common they have, is a hatred for the Raiders and/or for Al Davis. After they realize he’s got nothing else to offer, he’s just another un-respected turncoat (as if he ever wore a Raiders coat to start with).

Not even respected by arch-rival teams’ fans. Now, that’s a legacy all haters should strive to match!

  78. AZ Raider Says:

Mr’s parents must have come home from work…. Bummer.

  79. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

AZ Raider, I see you’re still shilling for Art Norv Cable, or whatever his name is. After the season’s over, and Al scapegoats him, you’ll be saying the same things about him that I am. That’s all I’m saying.

  80. 504 Raider Says:

With training camp and a four week suspension, Vick would know the offense better than Alex Smith when Goodell takes the cuffs off. 49ers fans, say hello to your new QB.

  81. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Hayez, i’ve never been to a Broncos site, ever. You get your ideas about me from the same part of your brain where you get your ideas about Al still being a good gm. That part of the brain that day dreams, makes things up, you know, the part you use 100% of the time.

  82. AZ Raider Says:

If Cable fails, I will bash him for it. If Russell flops and cant deliver, I’ll bash him for it. If DHB is a bust, I’ll bash him for it. On and on, but what i wont do is expect the worst. I’m a Raider fan and i wish every Raider the best.

“I’d bet if the Raiders were 10-6 last season, MR would NOT be here saying good things about them.”

    ……

If that were the case, at least you’d have a better comeback than insisting that Cable has potential. And you have no clue what people would be saying if the Raiders won, because it’s been so long you forgot what it’s like.

  84. HayesDaze37 Says:

504 — Can’t disagree. Schilens must stay healthy to keep his job, IF DHB or Murphy is ready to play.

Methinks I’d be satisfied if DHB and Javon shared that “#1″ spot, with Murphy chasing Chaz, and JLH becoming a real threat from the slot…

…with Zach Miller leading a well-balanced receiving corps in receptions — somewhere in the 80+ range.

    I don’t ask for much.

  85. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

AZ, of course if Cable fails, you’ll bash him for it! That’s the routine. Shills like you talk up lousy coaches until Al cans them, then you guys act like you’re an authority on the idea that they’re bad. No, it’s us, the ones who called it from the start, who are the authorities. You’re a flip flopping team shill.

  86. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Don’t make me pull up some praising comments of past coaches from some of you regulars who are now saying the same things about Cable…

It’s usually guys like you going right to the “you live with your parents”, angle, because it’s only one notch below where you are. No, wait, that’s not true. Your parents live in your trailer.

  89. HayesDaze37 Says:

Good one, MR. You’re really making gains in here today.

Running the highest-paid Lemonade Stand in your own trailer park doesn’t qualify as a career, big man.

Oh, wait…I guess that is a step-up from just being the #1 lemon-squeezer in the park. Congrats on your promotion!

  90. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

AZ Raider, the reason why idiots like you are always insisting people live with their parents is because your condition is only one notch above that, like a trailer park, or crappy ass run down apartment. I live in a house. I make more money than your whole family. So give it up.

  91. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

HayesDaze, running a lemonade stand is a more honorable career than any position with the Oakland Raiders’. Higher paying, too.

  93. AZ Raider Says:

Ok whats your routine Mr? Bash everything Raiders until they win? What happens when the wins come and you were in here bashing? Will your name change? Will you admit you were wrong. You don’t sound like that kind of guy…

What can Al Davis do for YOU “MaddenRaider” to help the Kool-aide taste better? Who should he have hired for HC? Who should he have drafted the last 3 years? Please tell me what the great MaddenRaider would have done to save our beloved franchise?

I know “Fire Al Davis” Ok, and replace him with who? If Al Retired…. No, if the team was YOURS what genius idea’s do you have?

Also, I challenge to you name one position with the Oakland Raiders, from the sideline to the front office, that pays more than someone would make running a lemonade stand. Still waiting.

  100. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Hayez, telemarketers make far more than anyone working for the Raiders. Tell me, why is a Raider employee mocking other underpaid jobs? Al Davis is the single worst employer on the planet. Pays his employees dirt, micromanages them when he himself has no clue what he’s doing (the team’s results in the past 6 years are proof of that). The he hires a token female and black here and there to make himself seem like a civil rights crusader. Oakland Raiders are the single worst company on the planet to work for. They fail at just about everything. So it’s funny to see their employees mocking other lines of work. And, no, I’m not a telemarketer. Think about one more figure.

These are anything but ‘token’ hires…You’re so desperate to trash Al for anything you’ll even go after his impact in the sports world on racial equality. The only person that comes close to Al in the sports world in terms of promoting equality is Branch Rickey, and I’d say you can make an argument that Al surpassed Mr. Rickey.

It must really eat at you that Al has accomplished so much in his life in terms of success, race relations, friendships, etc., whereas you have nothing to do with your life except rip on Raider fans all day.

O.K., this is what I have to say about Fargus:

That dude is bar-none, THE toughest S.O.B. that’s played in the NFL, on the offensive side of the ball, over the past decade.

He is by far my favorite Raider. He defines what a Raider is all about.

    1. He has no respect for his body or well-being.

    2. He goes balls-out on every single play.

    3. Anything he lacks in talent, he more than makes up for in shear heart.

The dude is a real-life Rocky Balboa. Give me 22 Justin Fargus’s and I’ll win a Championship every year.

(No, I’m not Fargus’ family member. I swear!)

I just love guys that play their hearts out. Raider fans should be proud to have a guy like that on our roster.

And if you really look at teams like NE, they’re made of guys who really care.

Justin Fargus should hands-down be our starting tailback. I love our other 2 backs, but, their hearts combined don’t add up to the human Kamakaze we have in Fargus.

Go Raiders Baby!!! I can’t wait!

Once the 2009 season begins on Sept. 14th the Chargers will beat the hell out of the Raiders for the umpteenth time in a row.

    Take it to the bank.

  120. priesttj Says:

I like the talent on this team and will be the first to admit it if we can’t win with them. Not at all saying that we have prbwlers at every position.

Just saying we have quality starters at most positions which is what you need to compete. It’s funny how most of our players culdn’t start for any other team until they do.

COW saying the most of our players couldn’t start for over 50% of the league is an assumption all his own. Truth be told he doesn’t have a freakin’ clue if they could or not. It’s just constant bashing by someone who undervalues the talent on this team and because a players on another team he MUST be better just on that premise alone. Who could even prove if that claim is true.

COW for once talk sense instead of this crap that can’t be proven by anyone let alone yourself. Tell us who YOU think will perform and who wont and why and then we have something that can be studied and quantified. Rather than this ‘I’m above it all crap’.

You make a statement about our passing game not throwing the ball deep every down harkening back to the days of Lamonica. Russell and Lamonica were very different players. That was Lamonica and no one did t
what he did. Blanda would come in for Lamonica and run the offense with much more efficiency because he would use the backs and TE’s more. Lamonica was damn near crazy.

Nobody even wants to see that crap again, I want to see well thought out balanced passing which utilizes the backs the TE’s and the WR’s to force the defense into bad decisions and then take advantage. Lamonica would just heave the ball downfield until it worked. Blanda played QB and so did Stabler. Lamonica threw tons of int’s and at times frustrated fans with his inconsistency.

Russell needs to play the game smart and give the offense a chance to be consistent and at times explosive in the mold of Namath or Elway or Marino. As for the rest of the unproven slobs that couldn’t start for anyone else, well they’ll just have to do.

    Miller

    JLH as a punt returner

    And Maybe DMC & Bush

We have talent, but not enough to make a SB run. We may still need some help on both lines.

  124. priesttj Says:

Raider O, sometimes COW gets his nose in the air as if he is some GM capable of putting together a team that can win SB. Yet he’s sitting on this blog second guessing everything those who are actually capable of doing those things. He’s smells himself just s little too strong.

Your list IMO is just as good as any, who the hell knows until they go to another team and fit in thir system. Last year everyone in here practically said Jake Grove was a bum and could start anywhere else then Parcells picks him up and gives him a big contract. Now all of a sudden Sam Satele is a bum. It’s just crazy.

  125. priesttj Says:

They said Grove couldn’t start anywhere else.

  126. Raider O Says:

For us to compete and go deep in the POs, we need a OLineman, Base End, and a DT.
-We have 4 speed rushers, so we need a base end if Jay doesn’t play well this year.
-Warren, TK, and Sands are not enough. We need one more DT.
-even if Mario, Barnes, and Satele do well, we still need to add depth.
-KEEP OUR COACHING STAFF for more than 1 season.

After that, we will make a SB run. IMHO

  127. Raider O Says:

    BHP,

It’s good to have opinions, but people shouldn’t state them as facts.

Who cares if they start for another team or not. Collins started for us and the Titans. We had better WRs than they do now, did he take us to the POs??!!

Moss was on our team, did he take us to the POs?? Did he help the Pats go to another SB?!?

  128. priesttj Says:

To say that CJ couldn’t start for over 50% of league is crazy. I definitely think MBush could start anywhere except a couple of teams. Another thing if Russell hit the open market most in here would be shcked at the interest to start for another franchise.

  129. Raider O Says:

What if DMC played for the Titans last year, and C Johnson played for us? Would have they had the same stats?

Are you having fun BHP, we can play the game too bro. You should try it! lol

What if JR played for the Ravens and Falcons, and Matt R or Joe F played for us??

  130. Raider O Says:

    BHP,

I wanted to ask you about CJ. Why now?? Why at age 29?

  131. priesttj Says:

    Raider O,

Shaunessey has a chance to be a decent base end if he is healthy, he played the open end in college but he was dominant when healthy in a very physical conference. He plays the run very well as well as come off the egde. He went in the 3rd due to injury he has size potential and is capable of getting up to 280 no prob. Everyne is overlooking this kid but he may turn out to be quite good.

  132. Raider O Says:

He was in the NFL for 4 years and played for the Rams and Packers, and both teams needed DB help. I don’t get it! He was with us last year too.

Raider O, sorry I didn’t see your question. But it as simple as him developing slower. Sometimes players lack confidence early or lack proper technigue Chrise just may not have come from a program that taught proper technigue. I’m not sure as to his career but I do know that when I saw him 3 years ago he was still raw but very competitive. Then he gets enough reps in practice and here you have it. A system that fits his style. This is not unusual, many inhere talk about scolarship players not understanding what’s involved in develping players. Not every player developes at the same pace. As an organization you must understand who fits what you like to do and if they are putting the work in to get better.

This is players on scholarship idea is really the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard but everyone says because they just don’t understand this league. You need players that understand your system they may not be huge contributers but they provide depth. In a pinch they can play and these idiots call them scholarship players I guess that’s supposed to mean they have no value. Well no player makes an NFL roster unless he brings something to the table.

But most just don’t understand how cmpetitive this league is. There are literally thousands of talented players walking the streets because they can’t make rosters. When ever I read that crap I just consider the source.

    one question…

    who’s gonna stop the run???
    =======================================================
Tom Cable believes in Kelly/Warren/Sands/Boschetti/Morrison to get the job done.

Have to give them the benefit of the doubt. I am looking forward to what John Marshall has in mind.

The coaches say they have the players they need to accomplish everything they want to on defense. Better technique, focus on fundamentals and discipline.

I will defer to the coaches on this one.

Top 5 pass defense – Nnamdi & C.J with more pass rush
Top 15 run defense – They have the pieces in place now.

  160. DirtyBathWater Says:

Id take a chance on him as well dump walter

  161. Dude Says:

    SnB,

Why do you keep using the phrase ” the coaches beleive in them” to bolster your argument for the personell on this club? Its a joke in more than one way.

    1) How do you know theyre happy with the players they have? You REALLY think the coaches would say a negative word about ANYTHING Raider? If you do I gots a bride to sell you.

    2) Do you honestly beleive Tom Freakn Cable had one iota of input into personell decisions? No way your that naive.

    3) Did you say the same thing last season? LOL!

  162. NoMoreFargas Says:

Watched comcast sports bay area such homers for the niners they actually said hill is a great qb and the winers would have a amazing pass attack? Yeah that’s why the winers haven’t won shizz since they cheated the salary cap to get deion and then rice and young don’t let him hold the lomabardi god I hate the winers.

  163. SnB Defense Says:

    Dude,

The Raiders have been waxing poetic about the incompetence of Rob Ryan. Rarely have I ever seen an organization throw a former coach under the proverbial bus. The players are all talking about the focus on fundamentals, discipline and simplification of the defense.

Would Cable and Marshall want to get fired on purpose by claiming they have the players to be a great defense only to be a bottom-5 defense.

I don’t think John Marshall, Dwayne Board and the LB coach would have taken the job.

The Raiders paid those guys a lot of money so why shouldn’t we expect a top tier defense.

I’ll let training camp sort it out

  164. SnB Defense Says:

I also had my opinions on what needed to change during the offseason. Now camp is starting. Let’s just see how it all sorts out.

If the Raiders are as bad as you claim…..then you will have more opportunity to say “You told us so”

I prefer to look forward with a little bit of optimism.

    Its only a sport….recreation…..a hobby

Coaches on EVERY team in the league talk up their players in June and July. Marshall and the rest of his crew were out of work, THATS why they took the job. You really think they sat down, looked at the Raiders situation and thought to themselves ” Hell yeah, thats something I want to be a part of.” LOL! 170. SnB Defense Says:

    Dude,

Season is about to start and there is a clean slate. We all know the weaknesses on the team.

I believe the off-season is for critiquing the roster moves…but now that training camp is about to start…let’s just observe what happens and what comes out of the camp and make a judgement on the team’s chances prior to the season.

maybe Russell goes lights out…maybe he does a big face plant….its a new season and the team wasn’t as bad as the Lions….Let’s just wait and see how things shake out.

  171. Dude Says:

I dont need to wait, I have years of evidence that tells me how things are gonna shake out on D. The offense is up in the air at this point, although I am not hopeful based on the OL and WRs. The D however will will go something like this: Will get gauged by the run, the safeties will will be piss poor again, teams wont throw at 21, Chris Johnson and Routte will get picked on every game, and when teams NEED to throw they will. Nothing will change on D just because there are different puppets in the show. The same “Gipetto” is pulling the strings.

I read a couple of posts from people wanting to get ride of Justin Fargus.

  174. Dude Says:

People on here just want to annoint DMC and Bush as the starters, doesnt matter if either actually earns the job. Fargas will be the starter. Just like last year.

  176. jhill Says:

Say what you want but Cable cleaned up a pretty big mess that was handed to him when he took over.
He has a clean slate and the players know what is expected.
Guys who do not perform are not going to get the reps. If Sands is still lumbering around out there he will be cut.
Way too much evidence from last year to suggest otherwise.

I think our biggest problem will once again be stopping the run against solid Olines.

Gipetto is the puppet master, Pinnochio. Al Davis is the puppetmaster…….

You guys do not know have the crap a guy like Andy Reid has to put up with Lurie. Take a look at all of the veteran losses the Eagles go through almost every year to avoid paying for performance.

Cable has been able to influence Mr Davis like no one since Gruden.
    Where is RR?
    Hall was cut in midseason.
    We resigned Nam and Lechler.
    Wilson was cut.
Too many positve moves in a relatively short time to think this is going to be the same Raider team as in the past.

Hell, he put up decent numbers last year despite being banged up most of the season. The lack of a passing threat and general anemic offense is more to blame on his low TD numbers. How any so called Raider fan could bash Justin Fargas is absolutely beyond me.

  196. Dude Says:

Really Dude? Then why did Michael Bush and McFadden combine for 7 rushing TDs last season playing with the same “lack of passing threat and general anemic offense”? As a matter of fact, Bush and McFadden had a combined 208 attempts and scored 7 TDs, whereas Fargas had 218 attempts and score ONE TD!

Furthermore, Fargas has had 698 CAREER ATTEMPTS and only 7 CAREER RUSHING TDs! McFadden and Bush matched that total in about half a season’s worth of carries.

Only a complete moron would believe Fargas should start over either Bush or McFadden.

Mr Davis has admitted his mistakes in hiring coaches as well as the poor performnce of the team over the last six years.

You have been exposed to too much Bay Area venom if you do not think Cable had input in making the changes that were made last year.

You probably think that signing Walker and Hall and Wilson and trading Moss were done without any input from Kiffin.

You think Gannon was brought in without Gruden’s input?

I am tired of giving out examples.

Mr Davis has always used input from his coaches and scouts. Mr Davis also has the final say just like any other NFL team.

  230. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

O.K. dude, so I misspelled his name. Why don’t you grow up instead of being a total dumb-ass?

You people who keep throwing out all of McFadden’s & Bush’s “sexy” TD stats are so typical of so many Raider fans these days.

You’re the same people that couldn’t wait until Gannon got hurt so that Kerry Collins would start for us. I remember all of you people, going on and on about Collins “Big Arm”. Yeah, that took us real far, didn’t it? Why don’t you people realize, after 6 years of complete futility, that it’s time for a Raider team to actually resemble a TEAM, as opposed to a collection of stat-collecting stars?

As I said before, give me 22 guys who give it all up on every play and I’ll take those guys over 22 “stars” every day of the week.

If you knew anything about the running game, it’s all about toughness and bruising the opponent’s will in the 4th quarter. And if you actually paid any attention to opposing players in the 4th quarter, you would know that they hated Fargas because the dude is still coming at them 100 mph.

Coaches and O-Lineman love Fargus. Gallery & Groves raved about that guy last year and said “that’s the kind of guy you want to go to war with on Sundays”

I don’t give a crap how many TD’s he does or does not get. The bottom line is that the 3 backs are collectively getting the job done. Fargas gets the tough yards for us.

Go ask the Steelers how that type of attack as defined their franchise over the past 35 years.

    Dear Jamarcus Russell,
In a year where all the TV analysts are saying this is your make or break season I disagree. Typically the rule is 3 years before the “bust” tag can be applied and your first year didn’t count because of the hold-out. That contract is done, feed and house your family well and give us fan-family what we deserve; A Super Bowl!! Not this year, no pressure but in time? Yes, I believe in you.
So as a big fan of yours and an active member of the Raider Nation I have to ask you: ARE YOU READY? Are you ready to quiet the critics? Are you ready to handle the media? And most important are you ready to be the LEADER of the Oakland Raiders for the next 15 seasons? In the huddle, in the locker room, off and on the field, down by 7 with 1:32 in the 4th? ARE YOU READY?
Your skill is a gift, a god-given gift that was given to you for the purpose of winning and entertaining. And you ARE a RAIDER, so let’s do this huh? I don’t know yet if they gave you that right tools to be a true passer with DHB. Khalif Barnes etc..but only time will tell. And Garcia? They just put him there to light your fire. That’s all. You are the starter for now, but listen to Jeff because he has been around the block a few times seeing that he is 39 years old and all. But also know this, you are 24 years old right? You have your whole life ahead of you, don’t you want to go to the hall of fame some day? I think it’s possible but you need to apply yourself as a leader NOW! That’s where it starts.
While critics say what they say about you, they rarely mention the positive. Never have a seen you blame your WR’s or your O-line men, or slag off your team mates in the media (think Ryan Leaf), You seem to be accountable on the field. Never mind the big arm, that’s just something you already have. You were born to do this.
This season understand this; our defense against ranks worst against the run, and this will not allow you much time to even be on the field as teams will again know to simply eat up the clock on the Raiders by running the ball over and over. This was not addressed in the off season. The schedule is also VERY difficult. This means that 2-6 by mid-season is very possible. But it won’t be your fault necessarily , the organization is to blame for not putting the right people in place. Garcia will come in, he’ll win a couple games and the analysts will go crazy. Warren Sapp will be beaming with arrogance (even though he praised you a few months ago, what’s wrong with that dude?), and people will say “I told you so” BUT they will be wrong. I know there is greatness in you, I know you are pro-bowl material, and I know you can take US to the Super Bowl.
So go into this season as the leader of the Oakland Raiders, hold your head up high, get the team to play for you and gather around you and respect you as a LEADER!!

    -A true fan
