DHB the only mystery

When the Raiders begin checking in to the Napa Marriott Tuesday, chances are the only mystery will be if first-round draft pick Darrius Heyward-Bey is among them.

The club continued to quietly bring rookies into the fold (although they aren’t confirming anything and likely won’t until Tom Cable addresses the media Wednesday), with word trickling out that safety Mike Mitchell had agreed to terms and Matt Shaugnessy (according to Profootballtalk.com) having been signed some five days ago.

The club hasn’t updated its transaction page in 12 days, since waiving linebacker Frantz Joseph.

The agent for Brandon Myers confirmed a four-year contract late last week, and getting a fourth-round deal done with wide receiver Louis Murphy would seem to be a formality. Fourth-round picks don’t hold out.

Considering that neither No. 6 overall pick Andre Smith (Cincinnati) and No. 8 pick Eugene Monroe (Jacksonville) have yet to sign contracts, it makes the negotiating for Heyward-Bey more difficult.

Heyward-Bey is represented by Tom Condon, who may be of the opinion that the Raiders are an unlimited ATM after his clients Nnamdi Asomugha and Shane Lechler set new standards for their respective positions this offseason.

Twitter updates from camp

Went into the office today for a new phone I barely know how to use, but I’ll try to muddle through as best I can on my Twitter page. I’ll file some quick hit updates from the Marriott tomorrow as players begin to check in as well as post blog entries.

The blog is tentatively scheduled to be switched to a new server Wednesday between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. with no new posts or comments during that period. I’ll post a reminder Tuesday.

ESPN.com’s Bill Williamson just posted the latest NFL salary cap information for the four AFC West teams:

Denver: Salary cap room: $13.5 million.

Kansas City: Salary cap room: $30.16 million.

Oakland: Salary cap room: $7.82 million.

San Diego: Salary cap room: $9.545 million.

It is hard to get definitive 2009 salary details but, the 25 top salary 2008 earners were:

    1 JaMarcus Russell $16,872,400
    2 Tommy Kelly $13,978,480
    3 Javon Walker $12,000,960
    4 Nnamdi Asomugha $9,765,000
    5 Justin Fargas $6,103,960
    6 Robert Gallery $5,779,920
    7 Zach Miller $5,544,880
    8 Jeff Garcia $5,255,280
    9 Gerard Warren $5,000,000
    10 Darren McFadden $4,375,000
    11 Greg Ellis $3,579,800
    12 Derrick Burgess $3,500,000
    13 Terdell Sands $3,200,000
    14 Michael Huff $3,145,480
    15 Kwame Harris $3,005,400
    16 Sebastian Janikowski $2,625,000
    17 John Wade $2,504,440
    18 Cooper Carlisle $2,230,880
    19 Kirk Morrison $2,115,400
    20 Drew Carter $2,005,400
    21 Cornell Green $1,653,960
    22 Shane Lechler $1,500,000
    23 Tony Stewart $1,404,440
    24 Fred Wakefield $1,400,000
    25 Andrew Walter $1,361,560

We know that Kelly and Walker have restructured and Harris and Wakefield have left but, any savings have been re-spent on new contracts for Asomugha and Lechler. However, the real reason for the Raiders financial mess is not the amount of money spent on stars but, the amount of money wasted on the likes of non-starters like Huff, Sands, Green, Carter, Wade and Stewart.

What the Raiders have to learn from the likes of San Diego, is that you should only pay top wages for the genuinely top performers. And if you want proof of the Raiders’ financial mismanagement, apart from the miserly Chiefs, the three teams with the lowest 2008 wage bills were:

    29) Indianapolis Colts Team Salaries: $93,373,915
    30) New England Patriots Team Salaries: $92,734,120
    31) Baltimore Ravens Team Salaries: $90,713,965

The Raiders had the highest wage bill in the whole NFL, a staggering $152,389,371.

If the likes of Huff, Green, Sands, Stewart and Wade are not going to be starting, then they must be cut. They are paid too much to just warm the bench.

  • Charlie

    Great point Scottish

Cable is going old school in camp and we will weed out some more of the pretenders.
I would not be surprised to hear about Sands being curled up in a fetal position by Saturday morning.

Resigning Nam and Shane points to the Raiders paying for RAIDER performance. Staying away from high priced free agents was another great off season move.

I think that there will be some much needed shake up coming out of camp on the Dline this year. Alot of money in salaries with very little production.
Other than Kelly, I think all spots on this unit are open.

  • Scottish Raider

    Charlie,

Unless they show real improvement in camp, I would cut Sands, Huff, Green, Wade, Stewart and Walter. They curently account for almost 9% of our total wage bill – over $13m. All non-starters should ideally be on less that $1m a year, unless they are high draft picks in rookie or second years.

And Burgess, Walker, Warren and Kelly must also remain on alert. They still earn high-end starter salaries and are only worth the money if they play 25+ downs a game.

  • Charlie

I think you are correct on all of the players you mentioned.
    Walter is an automatic.
Despite what many fans think about Mr Davis he is no longer going to pay big dollars for poor production.

We are focusing on VALUE. That is production relative to salary.
We have been out of balance for too long and Cable is addressing it.

  • Scottish Raider

    Charlie,

If, as we both seem to agree, Cable goes for a value-based roster, we could end up with a 53 like this and save $20m a year.

    1. Russell (QB)
    2. Garcia (QB)
    3. Frye (QB)
    4. McFadden (RB)
    5. Bush (RB)

are you people ready for some football???

    i am pumped…

i do think this year will show a big improvement over the last 6 years…

but… who’s gonna stop the run???

  • Scottish Raider

Pete, how about a Dline of Ellis, Boschetti, Warren and Shaughnessy?

  • Charlie

    Scottish
That savings probably would not materialize immediately because of signing bonuses and prorated salary cap issues.
I do think that we will absolutely cut the non performers regardless of the cap hit.
We saw it last year and more is coming this camp.
We will obviously keep young players like JR, DMAC etc. that are still developing.

    :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

the first word that popped into my mind was: jesus

  • Scottish Raider

Charlie, fair point but, as the Raiders don’t publish contract details, it is hard to quantify the cap penalties. One of the reasons I am keen we create cap space is that 2010 looks like being on of the best FA markets this century.

  • Scottish Raider

Pete, that ‘Jesus’ quartet will still cost Al over $10m a year. If you add back Kelly and Burgess instead of Boschetti and Shaughnessy, the bill goes up to a staggering $22m.

A DLine of Ellis, Kelly, Warren and Burgess would be one of the most expensive is the whole NFL. If performance equated to salary, they should be one of the top three DLines in the league!

  • Charlie

I think that we will be letting some high priced Dline people go and we pick up someone else’s late camp cut at DT.

Morning! I had to check in to see if last night was some crazy dream. Apparently Priest was spouting off that DHB was a better college football player than Tim Brown…Nope, wasn’t a dream the guys actually said it.

Still think that seventh pick was terrible. We shall see.

Good squad at post 256, thx Scottish. No Justin or Javon, no big loss, although I hope we could get some value for Burgess.

Sands = out, TY. But we still need another DT for the rotation or the big guys will be gassed in the fourth.

Only 3 RBs is worrisome unless we find a stud for the practice squad. Is Echimandu in the league and/or is he ineligible for the practice squad by now?

Oh, and you forgot Southwick. Don’t sleep on him…he put the second M in MORMON.

  • hwnrdr

I know I say this every year, but I do look forward to a great season. Yes, I know, it is hard to keep a positive outlook after 6 disatrous years, but if the team can continue on from the last two games…I think Houston was already counted out, but still a good team that the Raiders haven’t beaten until then, and Tampa was the NFC’s version of Denver with only having to win one of the last 3 to get in…we’ll see what happens!

The fact that Stryker Sulak was unclaimed on waivers indirectly supported the Raiders’ decision to dump him — but didn’t say much for the decision to draft him in the first place.

But now two NFL teams are giving the 199th overall selection in the draft (round six) a look-see.

Per Darin Gantt of the Rock Hill Herald, Sulak worked out today for the Patriots, and he’ll also work out for the Panthers. Sulak’s agent says that ten teams are interested.

No offer yet from Crabtree camp

    Posted by Mike Florio (PFT)

So with the 49ers and receiver Michael Crabtree hunkering down for what could be an extended holdout, how far along have the negotiations progressed?

    Um, they haven’t.

Per multiple league sources, agent Eugene Parker hasn’t even communicated an offer to the team, even though rookies are due to report tomorrow.

There’s a theory making the rounds that Crabtree’s injured foot hasn’t completely healed. And since he couldn’t practice anyway, it isn’t hurting him to hold out.

If he’s healthy, however, he’s hurting himself badly by not being there.

Or, as one source delicately put it, “He needs to get his azz in there.”

So, did any of you arse holes watch Chronicle Live last night? Nnamdi’s interview with Greg Papa?

I posted a portion of it i found in the Sac Bee, but that wasn’t the good stuff. When Nnamdi talked about the defense and Rob Ryan’s lack of coaching technique, I got the feeling Nnamdi believes the talent is already on the roster, but no one “really” knew how to play thier positions, or assignments while Ryan was there… Just interesting stuff, and changed my thoughts on our run defense.

It’s always good to be around fans like you bro LOL… Makes the days easier!

  • RaiderRobG

Hey AZ while I got nothing but mad love for Nhamdi and his love for playing for our team, he’s not a defensive coordinator. I’m sure every player on the field has an opinion of who should be playing and where, but if that were a recipe for success no team would have a head coach much less coordinators. Still, Nnamdi’s thoughts were encouraging and I hope the defense learns how to stop the run this year.

  • AZ Raider

I’m just saying, I’d trust Nnamdi’s opinion of whats going on, on the defensive side of the ball before I listen to anyone in this chat room, or Jerry for that matter.

See if you can’t find the interview or watch the re-run and you’ll see where I’m coming from. He answers alot of questions and proves speculatory comments I read on here wrong. But of coarse, it’s more fun to make up BS and throw out opinions for alot of people…
