DHB the only mystery

When the Raiders begin checking in to the Napa Marriott Tuesday, chances are the only mystery will be if first-round draft pick Darrius Heyward-Bey is among them.

The club continued to quietly bring rookies into the fold (although they aren’t confirming anything and likely won’t until Tom Cable addresses the media Wednesday), with word trickling out that safety Mike Mitchell had agreed to terms and Matt Shaugnessy (according to Profootballtalk.com) having been signed some five days ago.

The club hasn’t updated its transaction page in 12 days, since waiving linebacker Frantz Joseph.

The agent for Brandon Myers confirmed a four-year contract late last week, and getting a fourth-round deal done with wide receiver Louis Murphy would seem to be a formality. Fourth-round picks don’t hold out.

Considering that neither No. 6 overall pick Andre Smith (Cincinnati) and No. 8 pick Eugene Monroe (Jacksonville) have yet to sign contracts, it makes the negotiating for Heyward-Bey more difficult.

Heyward-Bey is represented by Tom Condon, who may be of the opinion that the Raiders are an unlimited ATM after his clients Nnamdi Asomugha and Shane Lechler set new standards for their respective positions this offseason.

Twitter updates from camp

Went into the office today for a new phone I barely know how to use, but I’ll try to muddle through as best I can on my Twitter page. I’ll file some quick hit updates from the Marriott tomorrow as players begin to check in as well as post blog entries.

The blog is tentatively scheduled to be switched to a new server Wednesday between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. with no new posts or comments during that period. I’ll post a reminder Tuesday.

    Good Morning NATION!!!

  • AZ Raider

He says striaght out Ryan didn’t emphisize gap control and wanted players to rely on their physical abilities rather than play with the correct technique, and knowlege of how to fill assigned gaps. He said especially at the LB position, that was the case. If THAT is true, well no wonder we were 31st agaist the run. I’m more optamistic about our run defense after watching that interview. I’m not saying top ten, but I suspect we’ll improve dramatically.

  • Florida Pete

    okay…

no more than 3 or 4 more cups of coffee for you…

  • Florida Pete

i predict we will have a top 30 run defense…

    go ahead…

Hey am crew whos the new hater 294????

We will have a nice batch of hator-aid ready…… while we all sip some Kool-Aid

  • RaiderRobG

Wow, someone obviously bruises like an emotional peach.

I’m not doubting Nnamdi in anyway or detracting from the man’s opinion. Every player has one, even the best corner in the league–who has a one that makes sense.

I’m just not willing to place all the blame on Ryan. Hopefully Nnamdi’s assessment proves to be true but I think we’ve got issues with our run stoppers up front.

Until we see the product on the field when San Diego comes to town, the verdict is still out on this defense.

  • OAKlifer

$eva What shakes brother??? good to see ya!!!1

I think the rookies on defense will out-play many veterns on ANY team this year. This will go down as 1 of the best defensive draft classes ever, imo

  • DirtyRaccoon

  • 4evaRaider

    SUP OAKlifer???

Its been VERY hard on me not being here,my lap-top isnt wired 2 a phone-line and it took all my cash 2 move into bigger house cause my daughter moved in to get away from azzhole boyfriend and now she moved back in with him so I stuck in big house with big payment, that little b!tch, lol

  • SnB Defense

Look, Rob Ryan did not work out. But somehow he earned the trust of the owner, Al Davis, for 6 years. Al kept him around through different head coaches. He brought Ryan back after Kiffin had fired him.

    What’s my point?

I doubt Al Davis would keep a coach around that long who couldn’t coach the basics like tackling, gap control and all the other stuff you guys are pontificating about.

Rob Ryan, for better or worse, was able to secure another Defensive Coordinator position. If he was as incompetent as you all say….would Mangini put his career on the line for this guy? I doubt it.

Rob Ryan was a bad fit in Oakland. A 3-4 pressure DC coaching for a team that believes in 4-3 pass coverage with speed and finesse.

Also, the talent on the roster is what it is. Look, its coaching, talent, playcalling and scheme. Hopefully John Marshall can use his honeymoon period to straighten this out.

    DR,

I MOVED 2 THE BACK OF 50,000 ACRE preserve.Swear to God me and neighbor built a hog-pen and ther was 1 in there this morning!!! a nice 60 pounder or so.will shoot or keep 2 breed but this is our 2nd one in a week!!!!!!!!!!

  • DirtyRaccoon

    CON SPIRISY theroy:

If Crab-ass holds out, in turn DHB might not get a contract done until well after camp starts. If Crab is still hurt, then it will not hurt him much to hold out, but it could creat a problem with DHB!

Crab whants more money than the 10th pick, so DHB’s agent will want more money also.

NET: DNB misses time on the field, falls further behind the other WR.

Crab-ass gets his $$$, and is given time to recover!

  • SnB Defense

I am happy to hear that Nnamdi, Kirk and others are excited about the defense this year. They should be! Hopefully that enthusiasm translates to the field.

But for me personally, it sounds like a lot of Raider players are talking from a script. “Our defense didn’t focus on fundamentals….didn’t teach gap discipline…on and on and on”

These guys have to get it done on the field. Rob Ryan didn’t miss tackles or get overpowered at the line of scrimmage or jump offsides…the players did. The players have to step up. Listen to John Marshall and start taking more pride in what they do.

  • 4evaRaider

God I wish I WAS hooked up at home but I will be soon, theres a waiting line 4 computers but I keep pushing the button 4 more time!!! FUKK ‘EM =)

  • Charlie

    SnB
I was trying to make that point yesterday.
The defense is a multifaceted problem that definitely includes a talent deficiency on our Dline.

Some of the best proof to offer is that Ryan and Millard were unemployed for about three seconds.

I predict Marshall will shake up our Dline with some personnel moves.

    O,

You cant say you love kids on the internet!!!!
    LOL

    Morning brother!!

  • AZ Raider

I don’t see how any Defense can be successful if the coach tells you… “Hey Kirk, you and your guys go out there and cover this general area and try and feel the play out. If you see him run the ball, react and use the your speed to compensate for my lack of play calling, get there and make the tackle for a loss, Got it Kirk”?

    Raider on 4eva.

    The NATION luv’s U 2!

  • SnB Defense

    AZ Raider,

Do we know what Ryan really was teaching the players? The players all loved him while he was here and went out of there way to keep him around…including Kirk and Nnamdi.

I am not defending Ryan by any stretch. I never was for his hire in the first place and had seen enough years ago.

But let’s not get ourselves duped into believing that simply swapping out the coach fixes all the problems.

For example, guys like Terdell Sands, Tommy Kelly showing up in shape! Having CBs like deAngelo Hall playing Man 2 Man….or relying on Wilson in coverage…and not having a true base DE.

It was more than just Rob Ryan playcalling. There was a lot of things going on that just didn’t make sense.

Let’s hope Marshall can turn this around and the players start making plays with their feet and shoulders and not with press conferences in the media.

Everyone on that defense (coaches, players, assistants) owns that 31st run d ranking

  • OAKlifer

    I am “Green” with envy!!!lol
