Camp analysis: Special teams
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 at 9:05 am in Oakland Raiders.
Last in a series analyzing Raiders position groups with players reporting for camp today:
Projected specialists: PK Sebastian Janikowski, P Shane Lechler, PR Johnnie Lee Higgins, KR Justin Miller, LS Jon Condo. Core special teams players: LB Isaiah Ekejiuba, S Tyvon Branch, S Mike Mitchell, LB Jon Alston, TE Tony Stewart, LB Ricky Brown.
Easily the strongest three units on the team last year and the best all-around special teams play since the Raiders returned to Oakland in 1995. The Raiders not only made Lechler the highest-paid punter ever and Nnamdi Asomugha the highest-paid corner ever, but justifiably sank the most money ever into a pure special teams player in Ekejiuba. Higgins and Miller had two TDs each last year on returns. Looking forward to seeing the damage Mike Mitchell can do in this area until he gets up to speed in the secondary. You never hear from Condo, just a steady procession of good snaps and good mobility as in punt coverage. Seabass does what Seabass does. An extremely accurate kicker from 40 yards and in. Like all kickers, he falls off dramatically from long distance although he’s got more than enough leg. That was, however, supposed to be his specialty.
The key battle: Branch vs. Miller. With pretty much all key specialists virtually accounted for (other than roster jumbling positions on the line), it’s difficult to find one. Branch was considered a hard-running kickoff return specialist but never got a chance to show it because of a training camp injury and then a shoulder injury on one of his early returns.
What I think: John Fassel has some huge shoes to fill. Brian Schneider, who opted to become the special teams coordinator at USC rather than stay in the NFL with the Raiders, did the best job of any Raiders coach last season. They would have taken him back, too, even though he was one of Lane Kiffin’s guys. Fassel must work through vets like Ekejiuba and get the ear of this unit.
What could go wrong: Coverage units revert to erratic nature of previous years _ one big return per game. Huge momentum killers which have plagued the Raiders for five of the last six years.
Today’s updates
Will head to Napa later as players begin to trickle. Check here for posts if news breaks as well as my Twitter account.

Justin Miller = KR
JLH = PR
If we want another KR in case Miller gets hurt, Higgins can be that guy. If that’s not what Cable had in mind, leave Louis Rankin on the roster and part ways with Justin Fargas. I don’t want to see Tyvon Branch return kicks ever again. He’s the ST gunner and competition for Mitchell at SS.

So if Branch & Mitchell become the starting safeties will they be replaced on Special Teams and if so by who?
I know that Branch is considered by many to be a Special Teams ace and I would hate to lose that skill set on special teams. Also I think I would prefer to see Mitchell knocking people out over the middle than watching him be a gunner.
Has there ever been a team where both starting safeties were relied upon to be Special Teams stand outs as well?

Far from being a QB mentor for JaMarcus…Jeff George could be used as a human Juggs machine throughout Camp. Just keep pumping him power drinks instead of electricity. When the power drinks stop working, start pumping him with electricity.

Michael Huff better step up big-time and fulfill his 1st round promise in camp this August. When we get that ONE player’s name, we can ask for the next one in MM’s place, and so on.

http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/20/why-dolphins-gave-up-on-samson-satele/
Why Dolphins Gave Up on Samson Satele
By KC Joyner
The Football Scientist, KC Joyner, is a Fifth Down contributor. His latest book, Scientific Football 2009, is available for pre-order.
The question I have received from Dolphins fans more than any other this off-season is why Miami moved Samson Satele on his way. Satele was a second-round pick in 2007 and had what looked to be a very productive rookie campaign, so it seemed he had a long-term future in South Florida.
I was of that same mind-set until I broke down the tapes and compiled Satele’s run metrics from 2008. He did fairly well on yards per attempt on his 132 POA blocks; Dolphin ball carriers gained 711 yards (5.4 YPA), and his success percentage was 79.5%. An 80% POA win mark is the rule-of-thumb acceptable benchmark for an offensive lineman, and because centers as a whole tend to have lower POA win totals than do other offensive linemen, that means Satele’s totals, while not great, certainly grade him out as a decent run blocker. He did give up four sacks, but two of those were coverage sacks, so his overall pass blocking didn’t seem to be an issue either.
That raises the query: If it wasn’t his overall performance that caused Miami to give up on him, what was the problem? After perusing his metrics a bit further, the answer became rather obvious: Satele can’t run-block the big nose tackles in the A.F.C. East. The Jets’ Kris Jenkins and the Patriots’ Vince Wilfork are the types of players who can take over games when faced with the right matchup, and Satele was one of those matchups last year.
In the 16 POA runs Satele had against Jenkins, Dolphins runners gained only 48 yards (3.0 YPA). Satele also lost three of those battles, so his POA win percentage was only 81.3%, or just slightly higher than his overall mark. That sounds good, but it is also skewed by the fact that Satele received double-team help (either a combination block or a pure double-team block) against Jenkins 11 times. He lost two of the five single-block POA runs, and it was probably that 60.0% POA win total that told the Dolphins that they needed to make a move.
The numbers were worse for Satele against Wilfork, especially in their second matchup (i.e. not the game when the Wildcat was rolled out). In that contest, the two faced off on seven POA runs and Miami ball carriers gained only 18 yards (2.6 YPA) on those plays. Wilfork also won three of those matchups, so Satele’s win percentage against him was a completely unacceptable 57.1%.
There is good news for Dolphins fans. In a piece I wrote for the April 6 edition of ESPN The Magazine, I found that Jake Grove, the former Oakland center Miami signed to replace Satele, had a POA win percentage of 90.6%. He also did this despite being asked to single-block (i.e. block without double-team help) on 67.5% of his runs. Those numbers bode well for his being able to handle Wilfork and Jenkins with much more success than Satele did.

I’d accept Vick after the legal issues, despite the heinous crimes…he’s done his time and if Tony Dungy sees fit to work with him then there’s hope and the promise of a positive turnaround. And he’s a hell of an athlete … unfortunately, our need of him at QB remains unknown, as big-money JR’s progress remains a question mark. I would not be against them taking a shot with him, but can’t see it happening as Al sticks with Russell a while longer, and Vick probably not wanting to stand around or attempt to play WR.
July 28th, 2009 at 11:32 am
JHill,
Let’s not play with semantics here. Huff lost his starting job to Hiram Eugene last year. He bacame a depth guy. He had 0 interceptions.
He needs a Herculian effort to convince the power that be to have him as the starter
July 28th, 2009 at 11:34 am
I am not too worried about the offense, I think they will come along nicely. It’s the defense that concerns me. On paper the only thing that appears to have changed is coaching. Here’s hoping that Marshall’s focus on fundamentals and discipline is what this team has been missing for far too long.

I agree that he should start if he’s the best in camp.
However, if he is only marginally better, he might not justify his salary next year and will be an easy cut for cap reasons in 2010. Especially given that Eugene, Branch and Mitchell are comparatively cheaper. He needs to outshine those guys.
Unfortunately, scholarships are a part of the program here.

Krappy is off to the … gym?!?
Krappy, taking a senior citizen water aerobics class isn’t exactly considered a grueling workout.
And look, the start of training camp is bringing out all of my little followers, like the Lady Raccoon and Bobsloberts. I’m glad to see the Lady trying her best to all butch and talk football.
And that redneck Bob is always so adorable when he tries to put sentences together. It’s like watching a toddler spill ice cream all over himself – fun to watch but ultimately you gotta go clean him up.
I just hope Krappy’s swim trunks don’t get sucked into the water filter and he obliviously walks home nude.

The Raiders are teaming with the Capitol Corridor rail service and the Altamont Commuter Express for discounted rides to home games during the upcoming NFL season.
Amtrak’s Capitol Corridor, which links Sacramento with Oakland via rail, is offering 25 percent off on train rides for all home day games. For half the price of an adult ticket, two passengers age 15 or under may ride free. Use code H811 online to take advantage of the discount, beginning today at 10 a.m.
To mark the 50th anniversary of Raiders football, ACE Train is offering, for $50, a ticket to the Sept. 27 Broncos game, round-trip transportation and a meal package at the Oakland Coliseum. A separate package also includes a tailgate party with appearances by Raiders legends.

Greyson Gunheim & Greg Ellis (a day after signing with Oakland) were starters at DE and Ricky Brown was at MLB. Chris O’Neill was at TE, etc etc
OTA’s don’t always determine what happens in training camp, preseason or the regular season.
I remember reading about Donovan Darius, Quentin Moses & Edgerton Hartwell tearing it up in OTA’s, training camp and even preseason … then getting cut, failing to make the 53 man roster.

Post 21; your logic is that even with the loss of our special teams coach we are going to have one of the league’s best special teams. Why? Because of on field talent. In effect on field talent is more important than coaching.
Yet you have also argued that getting a new DC is all we really need to substantially improve our defense.
In effect saying coaching is more important than on field talent.
Seems a bit inconsistent or I can only conclude that you think John Fassel is every bit as good as Schneider was. Based upon experience don’t you think that is a bit of a stretch?

Just saw on PFT that Jeff George’s workout video is creating a buzz among NFL scouts. Word is he’s throwing as well as ever.
I said months ago the Raiders should bring him in and give him a chance to compete for the No. 3 spot. What do you have to lose. It would definitely make for some damn entertaining 4th quarter preseason football.
Besides, maybe a guy like George, who’s now 41, and has a very similar skill set to JaMarcus, could be the kind of mentor to come in and show him what not to do and how things can go, even for a No. 1 overall pick, if you screw around. I think George would be a better mentor than Jeff “I’m the best QB on the roster and I’m going to take your job, punk” Garcia.

One thing I find funny is Republicans out bashing Obama as if he’s created all this mess when he’s only been in office for 6 months. During that time America’s international reputation is dramatically improved, there’s movement on healthcare, and the economy is showing signs of rebounding.
Yet the Republicans act like Obama should have everything sorted out by now and not raise taxes or spend money to get it done. However, let’s remember the Republicans try to pin 9-11 on Clinton. Bush was in office almost 3 months longer than Obama has been at this point when 9-11 happened. How does Obama get blamed for all of the messes already at this point when the great protector Bush is let off the hook for 9-11 because it was the other guy’s fault?

Hey Chris in NY, who is blaming Obama for Bush’s mess? I certainly am not…I just brought up some of the Dems CURRENT shortcomings and the only response any of you can come up with is BUSH BUSH BUSH BUSH.
Bush is to blame because Obama spoke out of turn about something he didn’t have all the facts about? Bush is to blame because the Dems are splitting over heath care reform? Bush is to blame for Obama’s drop in the polls? Bush is to blame for Dems getting in a pissing match over who is the biggest lib in the room? Bush is to blame for the VP openly slamming Russia? Bush is to blame for the Sec of State being laughed at by the North Koreans?
I guess if the only way you can deflect problems of the current is to blame Bush, then have at it, but that isn’t going to work for too much longer now is it? You know it, the Dems know it, and that is why you all panic every time someone is critical of your golden child Obama, lol.

I hear you. It’s just that all the Obama bashers I know are hardcore Republicans who were bashing him for the job he was doing about 24 hours into his term. I can’t take that kind of stuff seriously. I’m actually a registered Republican but in reality a center-left Independent. Obama’s not my golden boy. But I’ve been impressed with how he handles things and that he’s finally creating some movement on health care. Which has been a disgrace for too long in this country.
What’s wrong with universal healthcare? Why not just turn law enforcement protection, fire department services and childhood education into private enterprises where you have to have a job with a large corporation and meet a long list of criteria before you get any of those services as well. Then, if your neighborhood turns to crap or you actually have a fire or your kid has a learning disability, the private insurers will tell you tough luck, we’re not going to carry you anymore. That’s basically where we’re at under the current health care system. Why are these other services (law, fire, education), which hold up well enough, why are they basic guarantees but getting treatment for an illness is a privilege and optional?

The 2006 Election Results: Democrats will Control the 110th Congress
Thursday November 9, 2006
Democrats will be the majority party in both the Senate and House in the 110th Congress, which will be in session from January 2007 through December 2008.
The US Senate
Today, incumbent Senator George Allen (R-VA) conceded to his Democratic opponent, Jim Webb, who won a surprising electoral victory by a razor-thin margin.
The Senate of the 110th Congress will be comprised of 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans and 2 Independents, both who plan to caucus with the Democrats. Thus, the Democrats will possess a 51-49 majority in the US Senate.

I’m sure you and your high school chum Krappy have a lot of cool stories from the 50s and 60s. I’m guessing you crap your drawers as much as he does as well, which I’m sure plays out a lot better at your gas station that it does when he’s wandering through the Arby’s drive thru.

I want to blitz! I just don’t want Nnamdi to be the guy …

Man, Oaky, you’re pretty cool for an old dude! You kind of remind me of my uncle who’s always locking himself in the garage. Then when we go looking for him he’s always got his head stuck in a trash can or old tire.
I’m sure you and your high school chum Krappy have a lot of cool stories from the 50s and 60s. I’m guessing you crap your drawers as much as he does as well, which I’m sure plays out a lot better at your gas station that it does when he’s wandering through the Arby’s drive thru.
AZ you’re kind of cool also, although being a redneck from Arizona must have its disadvantages. I’m guessing spelling wasn’t very high on your momma’s “things to teach my inbred child” list.
Training camp rules!

Hey, look right there!! See it? Beeeech said something about football!
You heard it here first folks! Beecham said “training camp”!

can Stanford Routt cover Chris Chambers or Vincent Jackson? I know CJ can handle one of them …
What if it’s a screen pass to Darren Sproles on Nnamdi’s side and he’s not there?
I don’t know about blitzing the best man-to-man corner in the league. If he gets punished (injured) inside by a tackle or fullback, we’ve really limited our defense!
……………………………………………….
RR,
You know we’re cool right? Good, but I’m gonna stick with my gut and Oak on this one. Send him! He wants it MORE! Take it out on Phillip River Nnamdi!

RR,
Remember Woodson? Well he was the best CB in the league when we had him. We blits him once and it created an entire dynasty and an NFL rule change. But, he got there unscathed and caused a FUMBLE!

Well Dako, I guess it’s because I don’t read newspapers, ya got me! I consider you more intelligent than you’re showing here, Dako. You’re pulling on the bare threads & hope I’d forgotten the last 8yrs. All I’m doing is supporting a Pres that I couldn’t since 2000, I thought you did too, we’re all in this together.

AFC West:
1. Chargers (10-6)- Good running back tandem, great passing game, great O-Line, outstanding defense though a questionable secondary. Norv Turner keeps them from being a 12-4 team.
2. Raiders (7-9)- Great running game, still questionable passing game and O-Line. Worst DT tandem in the NFL. Great pass defendng but not run stopping LB. Possibly the best corner trio in the league. Safety still questionable.
3. Broncos (5-11)- Way to many changes for this team to get everything right in one year. Next year they could be dangerous though.
4. Chiefs (2-14)- Exact same as Broncos except they have a much worse roster.
……………………………………………….
Good read Dogg, thanks… 9-7 though, it must be a typo LOL.

Nnamdi will make something happen in the backfield against SD on MNF and the refs will screw us and we’ll ultimately lose the game?
i’ll pass. send Mike Mitchell!

I’m not the only one who thought Norv was a terrible HC. Stick to DC buddy, you can even come back to Oakland if you need a job after this season.

July 28th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Maybe we just needed a coach to teach gap assignments? I know I’m being redundant, but come on REALLY? No gap assignments Rob???? Ick, that’s just wierd.

LaDainian Tomlinson, Darren Sproles & Jacob Hester combined for 372 carries, 1535 yards & 13 TD’s last year …
Justin Fargas, Darren McFadden & Michael Bush combined for 426 carries, 1773 yards & 8 TD’s.
***
SD averaged 4.12 yards per carry. Oakland averaged 4.16 yards per carry.
so what area do we struggle the most? red zone! If Fargas can’t punch it in during training camp or preseason they gotta move this guy to third string. Right?
July 28th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
Rob is the worst Ryan DC by far. His father and brother are great, but he can’t coach a defense. The Browns will learn that soon. They think because of the state of our organization he can do better else where.
Robo was the worst DC I have ever watched!!!

July 28th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) Disgruntled Denver Broncos wideout Brandon Marshall missed morning practice Tuesday for health reasons.
Broncos coach Josh McDaniels said Marshall’s absence was simply a “precautionary measure” after he was sore following his first workout the day before.
Marshall had offseason hip surgery, but McDaniels wouldn’t elaborate whether that’s what bothered the Pro Bowl receiver.
The mercurial Marshall has made it clear he’s unhappy in Denver. He skipped all offseason workouts to protest his contract and for what he feels was a misdiagnosis of his hip injury by the team’s medical staff.
If Marshall were to hold out of camp, he’d be subject to daily fines of $15,888.

LOL. this just keeps getting better, doesn’t it?

If Jeff Garcia was 28 to 30 yrs old I could buy into all this talk. The chances of Jeff Garcia leading this team to the playoffs is marginal. If he plays for any reason other than injury…the Raiders go right back to the future and start stumbling from one QB scrub after another with no answer for the long-term.
Everyone talks about the last 20+ years of futility. Besides coaching…look no farther than the deplorable QB situation that’s been in Oakland during that time.
I want a QB that can play at a high level for 10+ years straight. Not a couple of years here and there.
Can Jeff Garcia play until he turns 49?
