To Vick, or not to Vick?
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 at 9:43 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Here’s a link to an Bay Area News Group poll about whether the Raiders or 49ers should sign Michael Vick.
Before the Raiders signed Jeff Garcia, I wrote that I thought signing Vick would be a good idea. He knows Tom Cable from Atlanta, could be used creatively along with Darren McFadden in a Wildcat formation and could be a classic Raiders reclamation project.
Not to mention the fact that the whole public relations problem everyone is so worried about wouldn’t exist with the Raiders because they don’t care about P.R. The Raiders do what the Raiders do. Deal with it.
With Garcia aboard, and assuming he’s not going anywhere, it’s hard to envision Vick considering the Raiders as an option because his chances at actually playing quarterback would be slim. If he was the backup to Russell, he’d be an injury away and could still do be used as a gimmick.
As for the 49ers, they’re so over-the-top image conscious it’s hard to imagine Vick coming to San Francisco, although once-upon-a-time it didn’t prevent them from signing Lawrence Phillips with the endorsement of both Bill Walsh and Dr. Harry Edwards.
And if you compare what Michael did to dogs against what Lawrence Phillips did to to the human race, Vick is the far more palatable option.
CCT columnist Cam Inman makes the case for why both teams shouldn’t consider Vick, although his point about Amy Trask being a dog lover is a reach.
If Al Davis was sold on the notion that Vick could help the team win, he’d have no trouble listening to the case made by Tony Dungy _ whom he once interviewed long ago as a head coaching candidate _ and signing him to a contract.

July 28th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
They were on the team the whole f in year. Why would you just pick the last few games?
—————————————————–
You do understand the concept of picking up where they left off, right? The question for you, again, is do you think JLH and Chz will pick up where they left off last year?
July 28th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
I want to see Mitchell hit B Marshall, and then Royal in the next play.

July 28th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
JLH avg 4 catches and a TD the last 3 games, once Cable started going with the young guys. Will he continue that, possibly get better, or somehow just fall off?
July 28th, 2009 at 9:57 pm
Jerry,
You are doing a great job today, keep up the good work sir.
I’m glad the off season is over with, we need our regular fix. lol
July 28th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
4 catches a game?? Thats just dominant!! And no, he will not avg 4 catches a game. Howd those play out for the whole year by the way? Same with Chaz.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
Chaz, 3 catches, and a TD the last 2 games.
Again, Cable finally stopped the Ashlie Lelie and Ron Curry expirement.
July 28th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Michael Vick is not coming to Oakland. I brought this up a year ago, when Deangelo Hall, Vicks closest friend in the ATL was here. If things went right, we might have seen Vick here. Things did not go right for DeAngelo, so Vick is not coming here. The second point is Mike Vick might be one of the top two or three athletes in the entire NFL. The problem is he relies on that athleticism and might be in the bottom 2 or 3 players in the ENTIRE LEAGUE in watching film, preparing, and dedicating himself to the game. Not really the example you want for an overall number one draft choice, who plays the same position, who you want studying in the film room
July 28th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
That’s one of the things I hated about John G, he never played the young guys. He lives his Vets.
I liked John a lot, but he didn’t play the young guys and he was too conservative with his play calling. When Bill C became the HC, he opened up the playbook. 3 & 4 WRs formation most of the time. The good ol days.
July 28th, 2009 at 10:02 pm
All teams that are out of the race play young guys, not just the Raiders. Those numbers are laughable. 3 catches? 4 catches? Must be kidding.
July 28th, 2009 at 10:04 pm

I can wait to see MM and branch on the field. They have great size, speed, and they both like to hit. We added another pass rusher to help create more pressure on the QB, so our DBs can make more plays.
We added 2 more WRs in the draft, and both are 6′2 and can run.
We have 2 young RBs with big play ability.
We have a great young TE with PB talent.
We have a young QB with a cannon, and can but more time with his feet. He had 13TDs & only 8 INTs, and had 53% cmp rate. That was his 1st year as a starter.

So again, with SDs DC “respecting” the Raider speed, he will be reluctant to “bring extra pressure”. He will respect said speed and not allow a LB or S to end up in single man coverage against it.

Ron Rivera is an excellent defensive coordinator. That was a very good pick up for the Discharge. As soon as they got rid of Ted Cotrell their season turned around. Good for them. It seems tho, that AJ Smith might have done what happens to alot of GM’s. He seems to have the Midus touch, and then things start going bad. They traded a bunch of draft pix for players, and now they have an older roster and some of the players they were counting on, such as Merriman, Weddle, Cromartie, have taken a step back. They needed to get over 2 years ago when they were 14-2. They didn’t. Sucks for them

You are the one who said 3 or 4 catches a game was laughable. I thought you might not realize what that actually meant. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant by laughable.
As for JLH and Chaz, again, we are talking about “picking up where they left off”. You do understand that concept, right? They were given the opportunity to start at the end of the season. For what ever reason, they got in there. And guess what, they performed. It’s a pretty simple question. Do you think they will continue to get better, or will they go backwards? Dud, Andre Johnson had approximately 60 receptions in 4 of his first 5 years in the league. Bowe was slightly better his lst year. Moss did not have a great year until his 5th year when he had 100+ receptions. And he is a Hall of Famer. Colston was good his first two seasons but didn’t catch 50 balls last year. He was injured. And you are claiming Desean is a pro bowler?? Don’t think so. Shows what you know.

Dud is right. So out of literally hundred and hundreds and hundreds of WR’s drafted or signed as college free agents in the last 15 years, one, a future Hall of Fame player, was a rookie pro bowler. The rest all took 3-4 years to develop. A handful of those players, had productive lst and 2nd years, and the remaining 99% took 3-4 years to develop. Thank you Dud, for proving my point.

Math lesson for Dude/troll:
If you come up with 10 rookie “breakout” WR’s IN THE SAME YEAR (AND YOU WON’T, but let’s be generous)…
…compared to the HORDES of rookie WR’s drafted or invited to camps (180-200ish maybe?)…
…that means only about 5% (THAT’S F-I-V-E PERCENT) would be breakout receivers…and those are generous numbers, just to make it easy for you to understand.
But — you don’t even pick WR’s from ONE YEAR…you pick from all years, like all those guys broke-out together.
Dude/troll…arguing with padded “facts.” Way to improve on your credibility, after the boys (and a girl) knocked you around in here the past few days. Still no respect. Wonder why?

Repost (I’ll be posting this all throughout the season, so get used to it)
How important is week one for the Raiders?
Since 1996, every single year we’ve won our season opener, we went to the playoffs. Every year we’ve lost our opener, on the other hand, we did not go to the playoffs. 13 seasons.
The last season we went to the playoffs despite losing in week one: 1991. Nearly 20 years ago. (’95, on the other hand, we won our season opener, but failed to go to the playoffs)
What does this mean?
It means week one might as well be the Super Bowl for the Raiders. It means the Raiders just about NEVER rebound after losing week one.
It means that when the Raiders win week one, the momentum seems to carry them through the season.
Is Tom Cable thinking about this?
Does he realize that the Raiders, under Al Davis as owner, and the environment in which he fosters, will bring back that Raider tradition of finding ways to win if he can just get them to a week one victory?
Does he know what it takes to get a week one victory, where our opponent will come out playing their best game ever, despite how bad they are? (and in this year’s case, it won’t be a bad team…)
Does he understand the level of preparation it will take to beat the biggest Raider killers in the NFL in recent years, the San Diego Chargers? Is he thinking about this every waking moment?
WEEK ONE WIN, RAIDERS GO TO THE PLAYOFFS. WEEK ONE LOSS, THEY DON’T.
No matter how much hyperbole you follow a week one loss with, Tom, the season is over. You’ve lost the team. You’ve lost the locker room. Since 1991, Tom. That’s what’s on the line. Week one. Period. San Diego.
You guys know what I think is going to happen.

JMac — Your work in the past 10-days or so has been really great, by the way.
I speak for anyone with any sense at all — thanks for the great work.
Even if you’re not always right.

Oakglenn, it can’t be possible that every single Raider fan who doesn’t like Al Davis works at a fast food drive through.
Also, I’m not a 49er fan. Any responses to my actual post, I’m all ears. As Dude pointed out yesterday, you’re always insisting that we talk football, yet you never do. All personal insults, all the time, with you. I’ve noticed it for some time now but I have to thank Dude for reminding me of it. Oakglenn, you talk football in one comment for every 10 comments where you personally insult people.
July 28th, 2009 at 11:55 pm
Another thing, Oak, about the fast food thing…If I were looking for a job right now, and had to choose between a fast food job or an entry level job with the Oakland Raiders, it would be a tough choice. I’m not joking. Fast food would be a sobering experience, but I still don’t think it would be as embarrassing as working for the Raiders.
July 28th, 2009 at 11:58 pm
MR — Saw your bold prediction of the Raiders getting 10-wins this regular season! Bold is the word, alright.
I’d take that kind of improvement (until they lost, I’d take it, anyway)…I never thought I’d say this…
…way to fire-up the fans with your enthusiasm, MR!
July 29th, 2009 at 12:12 am
By the way, MR — Earlier you said something like we can’t run the ball — the Raiders just don’t run the ball?
Since the “Cable era” began, the team finished 10th (’08) and 6th (’07) in the NFL in rushing stats the two years.
Why are we just not going to be good this year? Just because you said so? Thought so.
July 29th, 2009 at 12:16 am
Oak, I have to admit while this wouldn’t be a popular opinion. I would lve to have Michael Vick, even with my passion to see Russell develope. I love the idea of Vick putting extra pressure on DC’s to devise gameplans to stop this offense. Vick would be a huge concern leading up to gameday. But I doubt very seriously that it would happen.
WR’s typically take about 3-4 years to figure it all out and reach their potential. Randy Moss was the Dan Marino of WR’s he had an incredible impact in year one. DHB could do 50% of that and have a great impact. Say 40 catches 650 yards and 6 td’s, I would do cartwheels for those #’s from DHB as a rookie.
MR knows football about as well as I know knitting which is what he’s great at. Tha Raiders wont run the ball??? if any DC in the NFL thinks the Raiders wont run the football. He should be fired on sight. That’s about as dumb as it gets. DMC, MBush and Fargas with the best FB to ever play and OO. Yeah!! we wont run!!
What a cement head.

about this time last year i was saying that i didn’t think anyone from the previous year’s receiving corps should be on the team…
i think, with the exception of JLH, i had that right…
this year the transition to an all new receiving corps will be completed… young, big, and fast…
the question now will be the line… can the o-line pass-block… i honestly believe Henderson can handle his part… against the top pass rushers he should get some help… otherwise i think he’ll be fine…
running backs… we have wheatley and garner… i mean we have bush and mcfaddon… i think bush is better than wheatley, and i think mcfaddon could be better then garner… the big question will be his turftoe problem… we got running back and we got fullback… and hopefully, fargas will not be the lead back…
russell sees that this is his team now… indications are he is now taking this seriously… he still reminds me of elway…
on defense we have some big questions…
at corner we are solid… really can’t ask for much more than we have…
i think we have enough competition in camp to find two really good safeties… i’m hoping for Huff and Mitchell…
linebackers have a problem… we did not bring in the run-stuffer we needed…
at defensive end we brought in like 32 people… i’m hoping Scott bulked up enough to be an every down player… on the other side i just hope it’s not burgess…
at defensive tackle is where the big problem is… in the past we simply did not have enough bodies in the rotation… and when your defense has a tendency to give up run yardage, then running the ball is what the offense will do…
and this means o-linemen driving into d-linemen over and over and over and over again… that is what will tire your tackles out more than anything…
i’m still unhappy over our DT situation… but if the offense can stay on the field and SCORE… then the defense will have a much easier time of it…
it really comes down to whether the offense get’s it done…
this team is built to run and score…
this team is built to stop aerial attacks…
so… we need to run, score, get a lead, pad that lead… and never look back…
during this season we will see what Russell has…
and that will occur in the 4th quarter when we need russell to step up and get us a win…
that’s when we’ll know whether we have a winner…
July 29th, 2009 at 5:35 am
They say fargas looked great yesterday he may go for 2 td this year lookout dmac and bush!

– Michael Huff understands this is a hugely important training camp if he hopes to remain a Raider.
“Every year you’re fighting for a job but I guess this year is different, especially the way last year year ended and you never know the uncertainty of being here as far as training camp,” Huff said. “Hiram (Eugene) played well last year so I think this is really an open competition between us two. The best man is going to get the spot and so that’s all I can ask.”
***
There. now will everyone PLEASE see the light?
#1 Huff is a FS, not a SS
#2 Huff is fighting Hiram Eugene for a starting job, not Branch or Mitchell
#3 the winner of Branch/Mitchell will be our starting SS
I wish the Huff haters would quit spewing nonsense to try and prove a point!
July 29th, 2009 at 6:19 am
I guess it got a little heated last night with throwing around racial slurs and all. MR brings up a good point about the opener though. IT IS THE BIGGEST GAME OF THE SEASON, right off the bat. I wish we had Denver again to be honest. We had better win that game, or at least LOOK competetive. If we do lose, it had better be in OT.
Good post MR, but if they DO win the opener it would mean a hell of alot no?
July 29th, 2009 at 6:20 am
Scott said he weighed 256 pounds and wasn’t shy about stating his goals.
“I want to start, I want to get double-digit sacks and just try to (defend the) run as well as I can,” Scott said.
Scott came to Oakland playing on the left side, but said he is now more comfortable on the right.

July 29th, 2009 at 6:26 am
Ok, you won’t hear me saying he’s a SS, but I still had him starting with Mitchell. The thing is the Tatum and Lott comparisons, and what they said on draft day. Big hitting FSs is what those guys were. Striking fear into the WRs coming over the middle is what I thought they said. That’s not going to happen from the SS position as that position is usually is some type of man coverage.

Vick won’t be in camp with anyone this summer. No team is stupid enough to go through such a PR nightmare. Despite what the Vick fans think, their numbers are far lower than the number of people who don’t want to do him back on the field of play.
Vick will not play in Oakland.
It’s time the NFL stopped allowing scum to infiltrate the league.
July 29th, 2009 at 6:32 am
Jhill: doesn’t the SS play down in the box and cover the TE on occasion?
I know the FS plays centerfield and helps in pass coverage. The most they do to “strike fear” comes in the form of a safety blitz or laying out a WR after the catch, possibly causing a fumble or incompletion
see Brian Dawkins for example. he’s not a run stuffing machine at FS.
we signed Gibril Wilson a year ago to help with the run defense at SS. He played down in the box and finished with over 100 tackles. We replaced him with M&M – was overpaid, disgruntled and often abused in pass coverage though. I don’t miss him, even though he might have been a player in John Marshall’s defense …
July 29th, 2009 at 6:33 am
Murphy…. Man he was a good pick. In a few years hopefully DHB, Murphy, and Chaz could be a dangerous trio of WRs. Can’t wait to see how they develope.

NoMoreFargas,
This year has to be about getting the best talent on the field. I am all for guys who are “warriors” and all the leadership stuff. But this year the Raiders have to get this talent they drafted on the field and playing.
They keep drafting these dynamic young players and then don’t really play them….opting for mediocre veterans with marginal production on the field. Just play the young guys….
DMAC, Bush, Henderson, McQuistan, JLH, Schilens, Scott, Branch, Mitchell….just let those guys get the majority of the snaps and move on.
If the Bryant kid puts Terdell to shame…then play the kid.

D-HB is screwing himself if he’s not signed already. He was overdrafted by some 10 to 15 picks…he has no business holding out. He should just tell his agent to look at last yrs #7 and ask for a modest increase or more guaranteed.
If this kid isn’t in camp…he’s not going to play much in 2009. And like I said earlier…guys like Schilens, JLH and Murphy have the potential to be good enough to hold their positions for years to come

Like I said. The top 15 picks are tied intogether. It’s not the players fault if they aren’t signed. The agents and owners have to agree on a deal and when the 6th and 8th picks haven’t been signed it’s difficult to agree on numbers. I know as fans it suks, but it’s just the nature of the beast.

Rockstar,
I am saying this. Unless guys like Huff, Carlisle, Fargas, Javon Walker, Khalif Barnes, Hiram Eugene, Pears, Green, Burgess significantly outperform the young guys…then go with the youth.
The youth have upside and are learning as they go. The vets I listed above have reached their full potential and are either on a plateau or are in full decline.
Stop playing these marginal talents that produce nothing but forgetable games that result in losses. Give me the young guys over these mediocre vets.

=======================================================
Henderson will be a competent starter this year (read average) and will show the upside that is deserving of a new contract.
Murphy just might be the #2 guy coming out of camp. He has the work ethic of a Justin Fargas…and the physical talent of Heyward-Bey. To be a team captain on a team with a leader like Tim Tebow has to say something about Murphy’s work ethic and leadership. He had no business going in the 4th round and the Raiders are lucky that given their draft strategy…he was still available.

Walker’s status with the Raiders is uncertain. He’s not expected to be fully ready for the start of training camp, and there is some thought that he won’t even make the team.
With that said, the starting job opposite Chaz Schilens is wide open. Oakland has sunk a lot of money into Walker and a big training camp could allow them to recoup their investment.
If not, Rosenhaus may be looking for a new deal for Walker faster than they both hope.

THEIR LEADER had handed them few lines to cling to, a reason to believe, a sliver of hope for those who had not given up.
There was, this time, reason for faith.
It was last September, after the unforgettable news conference in which coach Lane Kiffin was fired, that Raiders boss Al Davis was asked if he thought the organization had a need for another football executive.
His words at the time: “Yes.”
His actions in the 10 months since: “No.”
Despite clearly stating he saw the wisdom in having another high-powered football brain in the building, there is no evidence Davis recruited any such individual.
In short, Al decided to ignore his own advice.
So it was that the Raiders offseason ended Tuesday, signaling another year during which the fondest wish of their fans again went unanswered.
As they enter training camp with legitimate concerns about defending the run and reaching the end zone and the maturity and commitment of their young franchise quarterback, the biggest barrier to success remains in place, as stubborn and imposing as ever.
For all of Al’s assets, his liabilities continue unimpeded, without the challenge that might be provided by a respected voice of reason.
And, no, bringing in journeyman offensive minds Paul Hackett and Ted Tollner does not qualify. They’re coaches, and Davis claimed to have his eyes on someone “local” who would assume much greater authority.
“There’s one guy I’m looking at now,” he said then. “It would be an executive role.”
This dramatic move would come during the offseason, Davis said. When former Raiders coach John Madden retired from broadcasting, it naturally led to speculation that the East Bay resident might rejoin the organization.
Well, the rumors about Madden were, by all appearances, unfounded. Fired Detroit Lions executive Matt Millen, a former Raider, went into TV. And Ron Wolf, the most successful personnel exec in Raiders history, ain’t comin’ back.
Wolf is the template for the unfilled position. He worked under Davis for 23 years, from 1966-75 and 1978-90 and shares responsibility with Davis for the glory years of yore. Wolf had Al’s ear, which led to the drafting of such stars as Art Shell, Gene Upshaw, Jack Tatum, Kenny Stabler, Howie Long, Marcus Allen and Millen. Davis was not sold on some of those players, certainly not Stabler.
Indeed, to chart a graph of Raiders history is to discover that the highs and lows closely coincide with periods when Wolf was or was not on the payroll.
In the 18 seasons since Wolf’s last departure — he went to Green Bay, where he quickly replaced Lindy Infante with Mike Holmgren, traded for a Falcons backup quarterback named Brett Favre and signed a free agent named Reggie White — the Raiders are 34 games under .500 (127-161), with four 10-win seasons.
Putting that into perspective, they’re behind the Broncos, behind the Chargers and behind even the Chiefs.
And it’s not because Davis, 80, has not been trying. His search for answers is constant and sometimes mimics desperation.
But the search also has been narrow, confined to those more inclined to comply than complement.
After the disasters of recent seasons, beginning with Al’s recruitment of Tom Walsh from a rural bed-and-breakfast inn to run the offense in 2006, to the odd hire of USC assistant Kiffin in 2007 to the fury and panic evident in the spending spree of last offseason, it was conceivable that Davis had reached a point where he could accept someone capable of protecting him from his worst instincts.
Even Al concluded as much, only to be overruled by his ego, according to people who deal with him regularly.
So the sweating and grunting this week in Napa comes after a relatively uneventful offseason. Tom Cable is back, as secure as any Raiders coach can be. Draft picks were more curious than breathtaking. Signings were more calculated, requiring much less of the checkbook. Hackett and Tollner and new defensive coordinator John Marshall are pros but hardly exciting additions.
No, the most potentially exciting addition to the Raiders is as elusive as ever. No matter how hard the players work in the coming weeks or how badly the fans want to win, real change is ever more difficult to visualize.
July 29th, 2009 at 9:07 am

Vick?
Maybe for the veteran minimum.. He will only be involved in maybe 4 or 5 plays a game at this point..
Also have to consider he is in no way physiacally or mentally ready to play football.
He isn’t ready to come right into a summer camp and prepare for a season. He won’t play until next season IMO. He will be 31 at that point and you have to wonder at what point his amazing athleticism declines or becomes much less effective.
Just stay away from Michael Vick. Not that he would be bad for us but he just wouldn’t be a whole lot of good either.

Raider O,
Haji-Sheikh had a good pro career:
Ali S. Haji-Sheikh (born January 11, 1961 in Ann Arbor, Michigan) is a former American football placekicker for the University of Michigan and for three National Football League teams. Haji-Sheikh spent three seasons playing for the New York Giants. He had a superb rookie season, kicking 35 of 42 field goals (83%). A recurring hamstring injury hampered the rest of his career. He holds the Giants record for longest made field goal at 56 yards.
Haji-Sheikh then played on the Washington Redskins’ 1987 championship team, kicking six extra points and missing one field goal in Super Bowl XXII. He was also a member of the 1984 NFC Pro Bowl team kicking one field goal and adding six extra points in the game.
Haji-Sheikh finished his career with 76 of 111 field goals (68%), and 95 of 103 extra points, giving him 323 total points.

Miller targets critics
FORMER SIXERS GUARD Andre Miller says he is out to prove the critics wrong – again.
This time, his targets are the critics who are underwhelmed with Portland’s decision to sign Miller to a 3-year contract that could be worth as much as $21 million.
“I don’t really care what they think,” Miller said in a radio interview on 95.5 The Game in Portland. “They probably didn’t want me in Philadelphia when I got moved there and there was no expectations when I got traded for Allen Iverson, so I mean, I went into that situation and pretty much proved the critics wrong. I helped the team get to the playoffs and definitely could have helped the team get to the second round – we were close to getting to the second round for 2 years.
“So, I can’t worry about what’s going on off the court as far as critics, or whether it was a good or bad move. I think people will see that I’m a hard worker and I definitely make people better, I make people around me better.”
Miller also said with the Trail Blazers that he will just try to “blend in,” unlike what was asked of him with the Sixers.
“I feel coming into a situation I won’t have to do as much,” he said. “When I was in Philadelphia, they relied on me to get the ball up the court, forcing the issue . . .
“In order for the team to win we had to fastbreak, and if we didn’t fastbreak, we struggled.
“So, just me coming to the team I can go back to some of my old-school ways as far as passing, moving without the ball, cutting, and spacing, and things like that. It’s gonna be a challenge, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Now if they can just ship Outlaw, we will be set

Outlaw is a stud and will be the 6th man of the year this year watch!!!!

They need to trade Outlaw.. He is on an expiring contract and he just log jams the minutes @ SF.
Batum and Webster should get the majority minutes @ the 3. Get rid of Trout!!
I don’t feel comfortable giving him minutes at PF, we have Pendergraph and I think he will fill that role just fine even if he IS a rookie.

The biggest issues for the Raiders according to CBS:
1. Run Defense – Says all our opponents will come at the Raider run D.
2. Michael Huff – Say he is fighting for a roster spot and could get cut
3. Russell vs. Garcia – Say mid-August could get intense.

Chazz and JLH have a ways to go.
The great debate about them is missing a little bit.
If Chazz averages 3-4 catches a game for 16 games he ends up with 48-64 catches. 64 catches makes him the 32nd best last year. Less than 55 catches he doesn’t get in the top 50.
Laughable? No. But outside this sorry team, he is not a “weapon to be feared”.
I like Chazz and JLH but the writing is on the wall when the team drafts TWO WRs in the first 4 rounds. Like Herry pointed out in the WR piece, these guys combined for 15 frickin catches last year. Even when they weren’t starting they both got playing time ALL SEASON. Kiffin was still coaching when JLH had his big TD versus Buffalo so the, “It’s the coaches” crying is bull. If you can’t beat out Lelie you don’t deserve to play.
Our QB and WRs need to improve vig-time.

Hey COW,
Good asessment they may be big strong and fast but we also need them to catch between 65-80 balls a year to go along with a tru number one if we FIND one on our roster….this is an underlining issue we have all been avoided two WR in the first 4 rounds means we might be ready for a change. However JLH is one of my personal favs and I have him making the PB on ST which will bolster his confidence for years to come!!!
JLH to the PB!!!!

Rockstar, of course they need Lamar…if Lamar wants his money, then the Heat should do a sign and trade—Beasley for Odom straight up…
July 29th, 2009 at 10:16 am
COW,
Of course it helps if the coaches call more passing plays. It also helps to have a competent left tackle to allow the passing game to have a chance.
I’ve heard several times that many felt that Kwame Harris was the WORST starting left tackle in the league last year. Then you had coaches who refused to open up the playbook.
If the Raiders throw the ball 30 to 35 times per game…and Russell can get 20 to 25 completions a game…the receiving numbers will take care of themselves.
July 29th, 2009 at 10:19 am
I am sure that JLH wants to be a starting receiver. Kick returners don’t make a very good living in the NFL. How long do they last?
You make money by being a starter on offense or defense…not special teams.
I am sure that JLH and his agent have had this conversation already. Look for him to try and take that #2 WR job this camp.
July 29th, 2009 at 10:19 am
There was no great JLH, Chazz debate other than they should be able to “pick up where they left off” and get 3-4 grabs a game this year. No one said they would be dominant, or make the pro bowl this year. I only said they should be productive given the chance to start. If we can get 50 catches from each of our starting WRs, that would be good for the TEAM, not necessarily their PB chances. One step at a time.

Teabag,
Oh yeah…big time, lol. I actually saw that proposed trade on a Miami Herald column, so it is not just me dreaming! The Heat want to keep Wade and the best way to do that is surround him with good veteran players now…they would rather have Wade and Odom for the next few years than just a team with Beasley in 2010 after Wade bolts to Chi town.

Michael Beasley was a rookie out of Kansas State for Miami.. He didnt have as good of a year as OJ Mayo or Derrick Rose but he definitely is going to be a great player in the league.

NEW YORK — Plaxico Burress stood outside a Manhattan court room shortly after his grand jury testimony Wednesday, expressing remorse for his actions in a self-shooting last November.
“I was truthful, I was honest and I’m truly remorseful for what I’ve done, what happened and what I did,” Burress said shortly after walking out of the courtroom at 12:43 p.m. Wednesday. “I just want to thank everybody — family, friends and fans — for their prayers and support.”
Burress was wearing a gray suit with thin blue pinstripes, with a blue shirt and tie. He perspired as he spoke.
He also ignored questions from bystanders, including one guy who yelled “Hey, Plax, Cowboys or Raiders?”

All I am saying about JLH is that he is more than just a guy to return punts.
I think this is a guy that can be an effective receiver. He’s already proven big play capability out of the receiver position. Opponents that do their homework will know he’s on the field.
Is he an every down wide receiver? Who knows. Let’s watch the camp competition unfold and see what happens.
JLH is going to surprise some folks this year. As will Schilens….I am going to say 50 to 70 catches in 2009. They are capable of grabbing 3 to 5 per game.
As long as OTs hold it down on the pass rush…..

Quick Notes & Quotes from Training Camp
Defensive end Trevor Scott looks much bigger in the upper body. Last year, from a distance I thought Stuart Schweigert had been re-signed. No more mistaking him for a safety, based on the size of his arms.
Scott said he weighed 256 pounds and wasn’t shy about stating his goals.
“I want to start, I want to get double-digit sacks and just try to (defend the) run as well as I can,” Scott said.
Scott came to Oakland playing on the left side, but said he is now more comfortable on the right.

don’t be surprised if O’Neal winds up on the Physically Unable to Perform List along with left guard Robert Gallery (appendectomy) and perhaps wide receiver Arman Shields (year-old knee injury).
Lorenzo Neal’s arrival takes the hurry out of O’Neal’s return.

5: over or under Raiders that get on here to read and post stuff????? and who would be the most likely candidate.
I say under and mostly to read but Mr53 maybe, Kirk maybe, Dmac maybe….but I always see random posts from names I havnt seen in here in the two seasons Ive been here just curious on opinions?? yes even yours Beccnut I know its football related but you can do it!!!

The Raiders must cut three players to get to the 80-man limit, and already did so according to a team source who declined to name names.
For those thinking backup quarterback Andrew Walter was done, that was news to him. He checked in for camp Tuesday — and yes, they did issue him a room key.
Raiders coach Tom Cable won’t speak with reporters until noon Wednesday. That’s when the transactions are most likely to become public.

If Oren O’Neal can go in practice….put him on the active roster and let him develop. This is a great opportunity for him with Lorenzo Neal on the roster.
If his knee holds up…play him.
I get wary when the Raiders try to “hide” players on these lists. It didn’t work out for Arman Shields, John Bowie or Michael Bush.
Michael Bush should have been in the rotation towards the end of 2007. Maybe he performs well enough to change the draft decisions in 2008. But nope…Davis was worried about Denver or K.C claiming Rhodes or LaMont Jordon.
Now the RAiders have too many running backs and not enough carries.

Thanks, SnB! It’s my pleasure to amaze.
I think the premier camp battles are pretty well documented – the 3rd linebacker slot, safety, LT, WR. Possibly the most compelling though would be at DE. What frame of mind is Burgess in? What will Ellis bring? Will Scott rise to the next level or go through a sophomore slump, is Shaughnessy a diamond in the rough? Richardson – boom or bust? And probably most important, will Marshall allow our LBs and corners to blitz (probably not) to take some pressure off our ends?
Speaking of ends, its highly probably that Krappy is dropping a nice steamy duece out of his directly into a pair of adult diapers at this very moment. Just an fyi.

a team built to run the football needs as many talented backs as possible. If DMC becomes a factor back, I mean closer to Adrian Peterson (not Reggie Bush) nobody will regret taking him, despite what other RB’s were on the roster at the time

It’s impossible to catch passes that are not thrown to you.
COW, runs his mouth about the recievers being sorry. But last I checked JLH caught just about everything thrown his way. We had a very young QB getting his feet wet. His confidence was in his TE and the vet WR’s let him down Curry drops, Walker disappears and Lelie just plain sorry. By the time things worked themselves out we had Chaz and JLH beating some of the best corners in the league.
COW they got open and cught the ball when it was thrown to them. What the hell else do you want ffor an bunch of 2nd and 3rd year players. This team is biulding you numskull they haven’t arrived yet and we all know that so no one expected anymore from them last year.
This year is different they are all a year older let’s give this thing a chance to develope before start dumping on it.
Some people don’t have the brains to see past their own dumbass bias’s.
DMC was injured or he could’ve been a huge difference maker. Had Bush been used properly he would’ve been dominant.
Anyone with half a brain could see that unless they were too damn bias to except it.

I have no problem with DMAC being selected 4th overall. I do have a problem with the 4th overall selection being utilized like a part-time 4th rounder.
I still don’t see how you can spread out the carries with 3 running backs that all need a decent amount of carries to be effective. You could make the argument that all 3 backs should get 15 to 20 per gm.

Jerry,
The thing is the Raiders don’t really know whether JaMarcus will be great or not. With a load of talented, under-25 players on offense — McFadden, Bush, JLH, Schilens, DHB, Murphy, Miller — a 39-year-old Jeff Garcia is not the future QB of this team. Hopefully JaMarcus is, but if he’s not capable of being a great NFL QB it wouldn’t hurt to sign a veteran like Vick to be around to at least compete for that spot in 2010. In the meantime, he can rebuild his image and contribute to the offense as a highly explosive specialty player.

OAKlifer responded first, but yeah. shoulder injury and turf toe on both feet. Cable didn’t have a full offseason. Fargas was the starter at RB with a fresh new contract when Cable inherited the team. DMC was injured and Bush was punished for refusing to play FB
Davis said Bush will get more carries. McFadden is healthy. Fargas took a paycut.

After the Miami game, DMAC was ready to play. Russell had to lobby Cable to get him into the last couple of games. DMAC said it was the “coaches call”…and Tom Cable gave some weird reason about 3rd downs or something.
DMAC is a 20 touch a game player…Period
Bush is a 10 to 15 carries a game player…Period
Fargas is a 15+ carry a player too. Unfortunately he is 29 yrs old….When Davis drafted Bush & DMAC…that should have been a sign where his career was going. They should have played him earlier in his career.
That’s why I am big on getting younger players the playing time. Look at Fargas. Sits on the bench most of his career…finally flashes some talent…but is now older and is replaced by more dynamic talent.

First year Raider, tackle Khalif Barnes, is excited for training to begin and expects good things to come. “I’m happy to be in camp. I haven’t played football in a long time. January was my last game,” Barnes said. “It’s that time of the year again when you get that itch.”
With it being Barnes’ first camp with the Raiders, he is impressed with the set up. “It’s my first time in Napa and it looks awesome. I’m just looking forward to having fun,” Barnes explained.

SnB, Al Davis has always been very prtective of injured players that have great potential. Bush wasn’t going to be used until they were sure he was ready. Sure he didn’t agree but I’ll tell you most of the time it’s best for the player.
I remember when Tim Brown had the kne injury he held him out an extra year. At the time Tim didn’t appreciate it but it extended his career as he says. If they rush back too many things can and often do go wrong. I told Arman as much last year and he didn’t like it. But it might be the difference in his having a chance to make the team.

DOMINANT?
And you base this on what exactly?? A game in TB?? ONE GAME…
If that was the case…
Joe Aska
Rashean Mathis
Aaron Wallace
Sam Graddy
Billy Joe Hobert
Darryl Hobbs
James Trapp
Doug Jolley
all would have been dominant too… As they have had some amazing single games in their careers.

Yea, well let’s wait and see before we go anointing Michael Bush… “DOMINANT”

Danny Southwick is roomed up with Nnamdi?
Southwick can already read a defense and audible when he sees a coverage he doesn’t like. I guess this is good for team chemistry though, since Danny is a 1st year Raider. captain on offense roomed up with captain on defense, huh? cool

McFadden is the starter and Bush will be the 3rd down, change of pace back. also used in short yardage and goalline situations. Both of them can catch passes out of the backfield
nice to have Fargas in case of injury I guess?

I believe Bush will have more carries than McFadden…
When you compare their skill sets. Bush loses efficiency as a change of pace back.. You are playing away from his strengths.
McFadden is going to used to create matchup issues. (pro set, split wide. in motion, in the slot etc)
McFadden is not going to be used like a traditional back, nor should he be.

I want tough dudes on my team. That guy is pure heart & toughness. I’m definitely the one in the minority, but I can name you Raider after Raider from those teams in the 70’s that didn’t exactly drool with athleticism. But, those guys had the heart & grit to make us champions.
