Raiders quick hits

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 at 12:46 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Fighting through some connection problems with both the blog and Twitter, but here’s a few notes from Tom Cable’s press briefing Wednesday:

– Derrick Burgess is a no-show. Cable declined to elaborate on whether Burgess would essentially show or be traded, but said Greg Ellis is the starting left end.

– Arman Shields, a fourth-round draft pick, failed his physical and was waived. He never got healthy enough after the club insisted he was healthy when they picked him out of Richmond.

– Darrius Heyward-Bey is in the Bay Area and Cable hopes he’ll have his contract signed in time to be at practice Thursday.

– Robert Gallery will miss two to three weeks following an emergency appendectomy. Paul McQuistan and Chris Morris will be at left guard to open camp.

– None of the first four practices will be in pads. They will be “learning intensive,” heavily in installation and choreography.

– It has not been determined whether Javon Walker or Oren O’Neal will be able to start practice _ even in “learning intensive” workouts or if anyone will be placed on PUP. Those designations will come soon.

– Cable thought last year’s morning-night-afternoon sequence made the team soft and wants the team in the heat. Hence, no lights.

– Stryker Sulak was cut because it was determined he “wasn’t a fit” after they say him play. No problems off the field. “He’s a great kid,” Cable said.

– There are no plans to bring in Michael Vick. Cable said he’s interested in Vick personally because he knows him, but doesn’t see what he would add to the team.

– Mario Henderson will get the first cract at starting at left tackle.

– Andrew Walter could get his wish and be on his way out. Cable said his “situation” would be resolved in the next 24 to 48 hours.

More to come later . . .

First? Did it really take you 2 minutes to write that comment Destrilogy?

No it counts for nothing. First of all I have no proof you’re married to a white woman. Second, maybe she was desperate & rich and you stumbled onto something. Third, I go by the ridiculous moron statements you make here on a daily basis.

    Nope, could care less.

  • DKnight007

Sulak and now Shields from last year gone…..

Sheesh….what a waste of draft picks. Thats one of the many problems I have with the old stubborn man and his scouts right now.

I was pissed that they passed on Lavelle Hawkins and took Shields instead last year and now look what happens….Shields is gone.

    Annoying….

  • DKnight007

Sounds like they are trying to deal Burgess still IF the deal is right….If the old man can’t get a 2nd rounder for him or a 3rd and a 5th then he stays and ends up being a situational pass rusher or starter on the RDE spot.

  • Mistabrown

If Priest & OakGlenn ride BEY’s jock like they did Shields it could be a disastrous career for the poor kid.

  • http://www.car.org KoolKell

What round was Shields drafted in, that was another wasted pick.

  • Mistabrown

    3rd I believe

  • priesttj

Damn no Vick!!, I know but I was hoping we just might do it. Cable is definitely getting his way.

Too bad for Arman hopfully we can resign him to the practice squad that’s just too much talent too waste. I bet the kid is very down right now. No one saw how bad he wanted it. There is something very serious with his knee.

But Jerry he did reinjure his knee after being drafted so there must be something pretty bad.

Damn! I never had the chance to see the kid play.

  • DarthPirate

Sulak was selected in the sixth round, Arman Shields in the fourth.

    There’s a big difference.

  • RaiderRockstar

Jerry Mac: no mention of Danny Southwick?

BSJ – keep hope alive brother!

If Burgess is truly holding out, he is a punk. If you sign a contract, you live up to it. If he’s gone, then it will be addition by subtraction…oldazzmufu

  • Mistabrown

You have no idea if Cable is getting his way. Theres no reason to bring in VICK since we are financially strapped to JR.

Nice attempt to make it look like Al has stepped back. Priest who are you fooling around here these days besides yourself & your left tit OakGlenn ?

I knew Shields had little chance to make the team this year. There was a lot of people on here who disagreed, some passionately. Now who are you, fess up….

Crabtree is making it difficult to sign the other top ten players in the draft since he thinks he should get top 5 money.

  • BlackHoleFan

DKnight007 – are your really whining about Shields and Sulak?

We drafted: Russell, McFadden, Mario Henderson, Johhny-Lee, Chaz, Zack Miller, Tyvone Branch, Michael Bush, Greyson Gunheim, DHB, Louis Murphy, Brandon Myers, Trevor Scott, Slade Norris, & Mike Mitchell.

And you are whining about wasted picks?

    You are full of it.

  • http://www.snotmerch.com Lynn From Snot

I thought Arman was going to have his own show called Behind the Shields. This must be Greg Papas doing.

How’s it going Vegas, good to see you.

  • itzSteve

well…2 players gone, 2 to go to get down to the 80 player max. Andrew Walter has to be the next player released…

Does DHB count against the 80 player max if his contract hasn’t been signed yet?

It’s a great day to be a Raiders fan. Isn’t it?

Javon Walker may be looking for work real soon. But, even if he’s still with the Raiders, he sees what T.O.’s doing with his reality show and Superstars, etc. Guys who like to “make it rain” and such aren’t looking to stay in the background — they want to be noticed. No surprise to see Javon move back to Rosenhaus, the new king of media manipulation.

Burgess gives 100% effort…but does he give it 100% of the time? Does his great pass rush and high motor make up for his shortcomings as a run defender? Does he want to be here? Is he worth re-signing? Is he earning his salary? If the answer/s to any of those questions is no, then he must go away…and go away soon.

I say trade Burgess NOW…even if it means “giving” him away a la Moss. It doesn’t matter what a guy does elsewhere — as long as he’s definitley NOT going to perform well here.

Burgess is a great situational player for a good-to-great team. He’s not the right guy for a team that hasn’t proven they are yet…and he’s definitely the wrong guy if he doesn’t have it in him to fight for his job.

    Bye-bye, Burgess.

  • 909RaiderLifer

    test.

  • vegas raider

I’m allright KK, been better been worse you know. Trying to corner a few casino or sports jobs out here, got a few feelers out there.

Burgess had to add a little drama into training camp this year didn’t he. Wouldn’t be a Raiders training camp without some sort of “weirdness” involved.

Excited about Louis Murphy though, got a real good feeling about the kid. I think he can stand out in this camp and preseason.

  • RaiderTay

“Arman Shields, a fourth-round draft pick, failed his physical and was waived. He never got healthy enough after the club insisted he was healthy when they picked him out of Richmond.”

We have to have the worst team Doctors in Professional Sports. They approved Shields, Javon Walker, failed to correctly diagnose Robbins. Should I go on???

  • http://snotmerch.com/ Lynn from Snot

    ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • RaiderTay

Burgess is a joke. Did any of Uncle Al’s checks bounce even though he’s been hurt the past few years.

Hopefully Burgess comes to his senses. I was excited to see Burgess and Ellis on the field together.

  • wv raider

Looks like ToddWatkins HARD WORK IS PAYING OFF.

  • Howie Long’s Flattop

What’s up all from Jersey, glad to be back and entertained. Just got my season tix this past week, Burgess is against the wall in a contract year. What’s he going to do, holdout? Move ‘em for nothing less than a third, if to New England a second because:

    A: It’s New England.

B: The Bowie for Moss Heist

C: They have about 17 of them.

  • big chill

anything new from the twitter sites i’m at work can’t get to twitter, i’m just feenin for some more raider news something……

  • HayesDaze#37

And…regardless how one feels about Al Davis personally, or his record in the past 6-years…to ignore his BODY of work is ridiculous. Even with the past 20-years thrown in, like the Al-haters like to use, his team has one of the best records for any team in any sport in history.

It’s obvious a “what-has-he-done-lately?” standard was used in both Al’s and John Madden’s case.

John Madden’s record could easily be compared to ANY NFL coach’s career, and his would simply blow-away most of them. People nowadays think Madden’s #1 contribution is in Video games, not football. Little doubt, the fact he is so closely linked to AL slowed his selection to the Hall Of Fame, and it kept them both off the list in question this time.

Belichek’s on the list, and AL’s not on the list? When did BB’s career start — only after he left Cleveland? Again…what-have-you-done-for-me-lately must be a major requirement. Proving once again…that the only thing polls do is add to the debate, rather than stop it.

  • Ryan

WR Arman Shields and QB Danny southwick waived, decision on Andrew walter in next 24 hours.

  • 909RaiderLifer

According to pft.com, Burgess is subject to a daily fine that could exceed $17,000.00

Word on the street here in SO-CAL is, Kupcheck and LO’s agent are talking again.

Dr. Buss is probably to busy playing poker at one of the card casinos in L.A., to be bothered with any contract talks..

I’m just wandering when coach Cable will be announcing the Jay Richards move to MLB.

    is this thing on?

  • http://sportmag.us/images/Lester_Hayes_November_1981.jpg RaiderDogg

“It sounds like quarterback Andrew Walter is next out the door. Asked about his status, Cable said, “That’s going to take care of itself real quick here in the next 24, 48 hours.”

Is there any way possible that the Vikings or any other team would toss the Raiders a 6th or 7th round pick for Walter? I am sure a smart team would wait until he was waived, but to say “something is going to get done in 24 or 48 hours” implies a deal may be in the works.

  • 909RaiderLifer

    Dakota…

Not to bring you back down but, another piece of gossip making the rounds out here is, D. Wade, and Pat Reilly are trying very hard to talk LO into coming back to Mia. Supposedly met for Dinner in Vegas recently…
