TSN: No Raiders among top coaches
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 at 11:47 am in Oakland Raiders.
Something to chew on while waiting for Tom Cable to give a pre-camp update . . .
The Sporting News compiled a list of the top 50 coaches or managers in all of sports, including pro and college football, the NHL, the NBA and college basketball. UCLA coach John Woodson was No. 1, with Green Bay and Washington Redskins coach Vince Lombardi No. 2.
Bill Walsh somehow came in at No. 26, behind Joe Gibbs, Tom Landry and Bill Belichick.
Following Lombardi, the following NFL coaches made the list:
5–Don Shula
12–Paul Brown
14–George Halas
15–Chuck Noll
17–Joe Gibbs
18–Tom Landry
20–Bill Belichick
26–Bill Walsh
33–Bill Parcells
Among the 118 panelists who voted included Joe Bugel, Tom Cable, Bill Callahan and Mike White. So chances are there will be no Raiders’ release taking issue with the selections, most notably for leaving off Al Davis and John Madden.
The entire list is below:
1. John Wooden, college basketball
2. Vince Lombardi, NFL
3. Bear Bryant, college football
4. Phil Jackson, NBA
5. Don Shula, NFL
6. Red Auerbach, NBA

8. Dean Smith, college basketball
9. Casey Stengel, MLB
10. Knute Rockne, college football
11. Pat Summitt, womens college basketball
12. Paul Brown, NFL
13. Joe Paterno, college football
14. George Halas, NFL
15. Chuck Noll, NFL
16. Bob Knight, college basketball
17. Joe Gibbs, NFL
18. Tom Landry, NFL
19. Mike Krzyzewski, college basketball
20. Bill Belichick, NFL
21. Adolph Rupp, college basketball
22. Joe McCarthy, MLB
23. Eddie Robinson, college football
24. Bobby Bowden, college football
25. John McGraw, MLB
26. Bill Walsh, NFL
27. Woody Hayes, college football
28. Connie Mack, MLB
29. Bud Wilkinson, college football
30. Pat Riley, NBA
31. Pete Newell, college basketball

38. Sparky Anderson, MLB
39. Al Arbour, NHL
40. Amos Alonzo Stagg, college football

That’s ridiculous. As bad as Al Davis is today, and he’s horrible, this is obviously an underhanded insult. John Madden has the highest winning percentage, doesn’t he? Or, is it the most wins in 10 years? I know he’s tops somewhere in that area. Madden should be on there. Whoever wrote this either overlooked Madden, or is trying a little too hard to toe the line on the whole Davis = persona non grata thing with the national sports press. We all hate Davis, including most Raider fans. Report on what Davis is doing wrong. Don’t make Madden pay for it.

Well, according to the Wed. camp schedule at napavalleyregister.com, right about now Danny Southwick is getting his helmet speaker hooked up to the coaches headset.
Then he’ll have lunch with his roommate Nnamdi before an afternoon PR meeting on how Danny should handle the upcoming media circus…

July 29th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
Teabag, you obviously don’t watch this team or you like COW can’t judge talent worth a damn. Any fol can see what kind of back Bush is, except maybe you and COW.
July 29th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
I agree Priesttj, Bush is a great back…thank god Al didn’t get his way and convert him to a FB.

You degenerates: Get me some tweets!
July 29th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
There you go Priesttj,
Calling people morons, idiots, fools etc who don’t agree with you.
That’s ok, just don’t then get self-righteous and pretned you don’t do such things.
July 29th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
Looks like COW handed Priest his ass again. I’m going to head back to the previous page and check it out.
July 29th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
lol…. Judging talent… right, I never said I was a scout.. but since we are criticizing peoples ability to judge talent. You would have a better time criticizing AL’s judgment over mine.. Because his track record hasn’t been too impressive as of late.
I watch this team, every game, every year.. And I am sorry that I don’t enjoy the abuse I get from it..
Are you the type that likes to play around with Dominatrixes?
I will not apologize that we all aren’t gluttons for punishment
July 29th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Wow, priest. Coach on Wheels says Chazz and Higgins have a little way to go before teams will actually fear them, and that’s what got you on the rag today? Sheesh. Take a nap.
July 29th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Dakota,
How could TSN dis Jerry Faust?
And what about Don Zimmer and Leo Durocher?
Or Randy Pfund?
July 29th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
No, you’re right, priest. This is a pro bowl year for JLH and Chazz. No doubt. Mmm hmm. Yeh…

Priesttj is a guy who “assured” us that the Kiffin/Davis feud was a media conspirecy.
You’t think after being sooooooo wrong, he’d pause before calling someone else a idiot, no?
July 29th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
Kell, LOL. Yes. Remember this place a year ago? And, Preist wasn’t the only one stating, as fact, mind you, that everything was fine with Kiffin and Davis. We might have to go to the archives and pull up some more oldies but goodies from the usual team shills in here. A lot of them wisely changed their names, though.
July 29th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Here you go Bo:
Excerpts from Tom Cable press conference:
“We are going to take a cautious approach with Oneal, his injury was very bad and I know he is itching to get back on the field, but we have Lorenzo to fill in until Oneal is 100%.”
“I think we had a great offseason. The additions to our offensive line and the help we got our defense through the draft process should really give us a boost this year.”
“I am excited about Henderson challenging Barnes for the left tackle spot. Both players should benefit tremendously from the competition. Right now I envision Barnes playing somewhere on the like and Mario will have to prove he deserves a shot at a position”
“I expect big things from our wider receivers this year, Javon Walker in particular. We are going to take it slow with out young guys, let them get up to speed before just throwing them to the wolves.”
“Michael Mitchell is a significant upgrade to our special teams play. We hope someday that he will take over a safety spot, but for the foreseeable future I think he is going to do great things on special teams.”
“Our starting tailback has been and until someone else proves otherwise is Justin. He gives us the best chance we have at moving the ball and scoring touchdowns. The other guys have their work cut out if they want to get significant time on the field.”
July 29th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
It’s like I’ve always said, you can go back to the archives, and click July and August of any year, and you’ll see the exact same hyperbole you’re seeing from these guys today. Shilling for players that they’ve since scapegoated. Shill, scapegoat, shill, scapegoat. Always keep the conversation away from Al, unless you’re giving him lifetime praise. That’s their blueprint.

Ray Charles can see Michael Bush has tremendous talent, if you’re going to rag on my team. You better have some type knowledge about the game. Watching it doesn’t do much for me, If you have no idea what your looking at. Like you MR.

No we drafted him as a possibilty to take it to the house every time he touches the ball..
Rushing and Receiving is the best way to do that with him…
McFadden is NOT Adrian Peterson… you adapt your game plan around a players skill set not vice versa

priest, Ray Charles can also see that the Raiders have sucked for 6 straight years, and haven’t made one move in upper management. Ray Charles can also see that the talent you’re over-hyping was hand picked by this very pisspore management. Ray Charles can also see that team shills like you have been hyping up similar, mediocre talent in previous seasons. Also, Ray Charles is dead, which means he can’t see, hear, touch or feel anything. So obviously you guys over in Alameda need to update your cultural references as well as your football strategy.

Capitalism died during the Great Depression, anyway. Since the Great Depression, not one single American has ever been entirely dependent on their self. There has always been some form of government to help anyone in need. We’ve lived under Democratic Social ism ever since, which includes a great deal of free enterprise. All O b ama’s going to do is take a lot of the money government’s giving to the rich, and give it to the working class.
