First day of school
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, July 30th, 2009 at 3:01 pm in Oakland Raiders.
In the earlier post I referenced the Raiders’ ultra-light practice session which aborted plays with a whistle within a second or two of the snap.
It was a practice which would be scoffed at by old-timers. When the Raiders said they were going twice a day for the first four days Tom Cable was called “Old School,’’ when in reality it was just “school.’’
It looked about as strenuous as a day behind a desk, toting the math book to a locker while grabbing another for biology.
Tweets from Kirk Morrison and Darren McFadden, referencing their need for naps after the practice, were amusing in that light.
Still, some players made a solid argument to the method behind the lack of madness, other than saving their bodies and avoiding the brutality of blitz pick-up drills.
“I think it’s great because we get to get our bodies and our minds re-acclimated for getting to football, so when we get in on Monday, it’s pop, pop, pop, and you don’t have any excuse about rust, because you’ve already had an opportunity to get it out of the way,’’ strong side linebacker Jon Alston said.
Free safety Hiram Eugene, from his familiar spot well behind the rest of the defense, insisted there was plenty to be gained from the format.
“What I’m accomplishing is the focus aspect of getting proper depth on my alignment, also just visualizing, seeing what’s going on, and when the time comes when I’m breaking full speed I can just see that much better,’’ Eugene said.
Said JaMarcus Russell: “He’s doing it this way so on Monday we’ll have a sense of what’s going on.’’
More sights and sounds from the morning session:
– “A lot of the younger players, Louis Murphy, we had Todd Watkins, we had Will Franklin, Jonathan Holland, a lot of guys where we could be ourselves with nobody listening. You never know what you’re able to do,’’ _ Russell when asked who attended his passing camp in Alabama.
– Wide receiver Chaz Schilens had a prior engagement and said he could not attend. He did, however, get in some off-season work with Jeff Garcia in San Diego.
– “I try to let the money go away. But since other people bring it up, it is something that a lotta people that have been playing football their whole life and the work they put in as a kid up to now they final got paid for it.
“That’s the way I look at it. So other than that as a quarterback you are always in the eye so play close attention to what you do never know who’s watching.’’ _ Russell on coping with the money and fame that goes with being an NFL starting quarterback and No. 1 overall draft pick.
– “Depends on who we’re playing, just like every other year. There are certain games where I will follow a guy, there are certain games where if a guy starts hurting us then I’ll follow him. And there are certain games where we’re not worried about it and we’ll just stay on both sides. It will be pretty similar,’’ _ Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha on whether he’ll shadow the opposition’s best receiver.
– Sounds as if new left end Greg Ellis isn’t going to miss being an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense.
“It felt good to know, all right, pretty much every time I’m going to be rushing,’’ Ellis said.
Well, on the pass plays, anyway. How Ellis will play the run in Oakland remains to be seen. He typically came off the field against run-heavy teams like the New York Giants.
–“To me, the short time being with him, he seems to say, `OK these guys do this the best so that’s what we’re going to need to do, ‘’ Ellis on the defensive philosophy of coordinator John Marshall.
– Cable is in to slogans. He designed a T-shirt that said, “Wanted, 53 men committed to one purpose’’ on the front.
On the back of the shirt is the printed paragraph: “Once a man has made a commitment to a way of life he puts the greatest strength in the world behind him. It’s something we call heart power. Once a man has made this commitment nothing will stop him short of success.’’
– The Raiders are said to be waiting for league approval on the contract of Darrius Heyward-Bey before he can attend practice, which would probably be later today or during one of Friday’s sessions. On his twitter account, agent Alvin Keels reports an inside source saying DHB will get $23.5 million guaranteed and that the deal has a maximum value of $54 million.
Keels is not DHB’s agent, by the way. He’s represented by Tom Condon and Ben Dogra of CAA Sports.
– I’ll post a brief review of the second practice later this evening.

July 30th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
OK glad to see DHB signed and on his way to camp but…..
Damn we got a lot of money tied up on a handful of guys. I know salary cap is all spaced out to allow for it all but DAMN
Asomugha 15M/ yr
Kelly 8M/yr
McFadden 10M/yr
Russell 10M/yr
DHB 11M/yr
Gallery 8M/yr
Warren 6M/yr
When will Morrison and Howard get their payday? Both those guys deserve 6M/yr or more IMHO
I believe morrison is in a contract year am i right? Howard has one more to go. We are looking at an uncapped year which is great but can a team in the bottom of the revenue column afford this?
July 30th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
OK I just remembered that Fox sports gives a pretty accurate breakdown of player salaries for the year and Kelly is making 14M this season! DAMN! Asomugha 10M DAMN
July 30th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
Yaaaaay….
July 30th, 2009 at 3:25 pm
Kelly has to seriously stop jumping offsides.
July 30th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
I guess we’re logging in old school?
July 30th, 2009 at 3:28 pm
We should all expect Tommy Kelly to be considered a top 2 or 3 DT when this season is done.
No excuses!
July 30th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Warren & Kelly should rank as the best or 2nd best (Williams Bros in Minnesota) DT tandem in the NFL.
Raiders have a lot of players getting paid a lot of money. Its time for these players to perform at the level of their paycheck
July 30th, 2009 at 3:37 pm
Well, looks like I’m back in control you dimwits
July 30th, 2009 at 3:44 pm
Football is coreography, so it makes a lot of sense that Cable wants to walk through player placement. The hitting and tackling can come after all the player placement is set up. I really like the idea behind teaching fundamentals, it builds sound technique and execution.

July 30th, 2009 at 7:31 am
DHB’s deal is reportedly 6 years, $62 million with a $32.5 million dollar signing bonus and $55 million guaranteed over the life of the contract.
It is a 42% increase over last year’s #7 pick and it rivals this years #1 pick Matt Stafford’s contract (6 years, $72 million)
==========================================
So much for that bull……
July 30th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Jerry Mac… thanx for the FIX!
I’m going to wait and see, on Cable’s “method behind the lack of madness”.
Our previous Coach’s “methods” haven’t fared very well, so lets just wait and see what the fat man, and his staff can do.
We’ll all find out soon enough.
IN OTHER NEWS: Lamar re-signs with the Lakers.

in other news I knew that Big Papi and Manny were on the juice in 2003! No juice, no rings!
It seems the Patriots aren’t the only New England team that needs to cheat to win!
July 30th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
Maybe Al Davis needs to cheat more.

Norco Slob, glad to see you’re back from you’re earlier appearance as Brian! Man, you really are making a comeback.
Krappy, let’s be real. What professional sports team would allow a senior citizen onto their practice field with a steaming dump in his pants? Not only would it be a distraction to the players trying to learn a new system, but it would also threaten the integrity of the playing field.
C’mon Krappy – let’s give the boys a break. They had to deal with a coaching change last year … and now this?
July 30th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Norco – Why not just meet up with KoolKell and see how it goes? It can’t be that bad right?

JaMarcus: “I’m probably a little heavy”
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on July 30, 2009 6:04 PM ET
After a few recent posts on Al Davis’ team, some commenters from Raider Nation have noted the posts were missing a sarcastic remark regarding JaMarcus Russell’s weight.
That’s going to be tough to avoid this time.
Russell admitted to being a little chunky upon his arrival at training camp today, according to Jerry McDonald’s Twitter page.
“I’m probably a little heavy. But I’m not 300 pounds like you all said last year.”
Russell’s listed weight is 270 pounds and the San Francisco Chronicle guesses that he’s not too far over that number.
But any slippage before this crucial year gives more ammunition to those who believe Russell simply doesn’t get it.
On the plus side of the maturity ledger, Russell said that his receivers camp in Alabama went well last month.
Russell paid four receivers to come on his dime. Unfortunately, none of the wideouts are currently in the top four spots on Oakland’s depth chart.
Ultimately, Russell’s production on Sundays will be all that matters. If he improves, his weight issues almost become amusing. If he stagnates, they are a sign of a poor work ethic.
And if Russell starts to decline, Jeff Garcia is eagerly waiting in the wings.

I mean they drafted the kid…provided him with the worst teammates imagineable, worst coaching ever seen, benched him at the end of 2006, drafted a new QB, MADE HIM 4TH STRING AFTER HE OUTPERFORMED MCCOWN/CULPEPPER, refused to give him his release, 2nd string again and then bitterly retain him all the way to training camp thus making it hard for him to catch on somewhere else.
Just ridiculous

great news we got all draft picks into camp. dhb only missed the morning tutorial, will be at the evening session. hope that hammy is healed up, he needs all august to gel with jruss. receiver battles will be some fun to watch, see if murphy and dhb can challenge shilens and jlh for a starting job.
have high hopes for the o line this year with cable and mescelic(sp?) teaming up and making it their focus. with a whole training camp at lt, i see mario really nailing down the position. hoping green gets unseated by someone on the right side, maybe pears? id even take barnes if wins it.
July 30th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
I think all of the talk about how much everything will pay off on Monday is crap. These guys are just glad they aren’t smashing into each other every other second. Trust me, I played football and practices were much easier when we didn’t have to hit.
July 30th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
where is that Fat pasta eatin mother fukker Oakglenn? Gettin his shine box?
July 30th, 2009 at 4:49 pm
I think the Raiders need to stop screwing with the Barnes on the LT idea and just move him to RT now so he can get acclimated quickly and be ready for the season. The guy already knows how to play LT and he didn’t do it well enough last season to stick with the Jags. Just make the transition easier.
July 30th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Matt – Well the truth is…the less hitting, the less chance for injury and there will be plenty of hitting to go around once they start so I agree…Theres no rush. I’d hate to see Mitchell take out Murphy so quickly.

Sometimes it seems that way. The thing I didn’t like was Walter was begging for his release for the last couple of years AND he wasn’t in the Raiders plans.
They could have groomed another young backup in his spot…I don’t know….
It will be hard for Walter to catch on in August..versus catching on in March. He didn’t deserve this.
The Raiders failed him by awful coaching, swapping systems, poor gameplans and the like.
I’ll be chearing for the kid going forward

Yeah…I don’t think he was in the plans once Louis Murphy was discovered. Shields was drafted because he ran a great 40x. The Raiders thought they could shelve him for a year and use him next yr. But then Murphy became available.
The Raiders always try to unearth diamonds in the rough. That’s why they look at measurables or look for players that may be undervalued due to a knee injury

AZ Raider – Honestly…none of the 6 names you mentioned has done anything worthy enough of anything. JLH has shown some flashes and playmaking ability and Schilens has shown flashes of great hands and outside of that…everything has been inconsistent and is an unknown so I’m not exactly thrilled until someone steps up. Shields would just be another unknown name to the list but would give us better odds with him there. The thing that bothers me the most is these wasted draft picks. It may not seem like a big deal now but its a big deal in regards to the future.
And the future has to be bright. Its like having a farm system in baseball. You need to develop your own talent and the reason the Raiders have failed over the last 6 years is their poor development skills. I mean…Sam Williams? After all these years, find someone else. They keep the wrong guys, they draft the wrong guys and they waste too much time. I just think they need to make smarter decisions.

July 30th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
I was actually happy with the Javon Walker signing when we got him but I wasn’t happy with the amount of money we paid him. I personally think hes a very good WR but hes constantly proving me wrong. The Vegas thing really screwed things. The knee problem gave him a mulligan for last year and I thought…ok…he’ll turn this thing around and have a big year for us and then he goes off and gets another surgery right before camp starts. That kind of crap pisses me off. His priorities are out of whack. I seriously think the guy has talent but his head literally isn’t in the game.
If he gets his act together, I think we have an 85 catch, 1200 yard receiver with 8-10 TD’s and all the other WR’s around him can only benefit from that but I’m not so sure now that he had another surgery. Hes going to be soft once again.

Why oh why do I have the feeling we might hear “DHB and all slips through both hands” way to often?

July 30th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Thanks 24, I’m hoping they’re not finished with the server turnover.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
DHB just put 8 mill in the bank, he’s probably a little light headed.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:29 pm
26 mil. down the drain
July 30th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
Honestly…T.O. is known for the drops and hes a great player with a bad attitude. Maybe DHB can be a great player with a good attitude and we can deal with a few drops. Kelly’s jumping offsides all the time is more alarming to me.

It’s not so much a hate thing, but an annoyance that no matter how crapy this teams gets certain Raider fans have this stupid notion that the owner can do no wrong.
Now from a historical standpoint a Donald Sterling, Al Davis is not but in Todays NFL the, “Al Davis can do no wrong Raider fan” might as well support Donald Sterling without question as the do Davis.
The old man has lost it and some Raider fans can stand to bear the thought.
P.S. We’ve not seen the last of Andrew Walter on Sunday.

Sorry to but in, but I’ve been dealing with those people for years. Owner or not, just as a GM, the record is horrible and the moves get stranger and stranger.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
RaiderRobG – I would have liked to have had Boldin. I would have traded our #1 for him.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
The funny thing about the people who love Al Davis is…they don’t seem to appreciate Jon Gruden as a Raider. I don’t everyone but a good amount and that tells me that those fans are ok with ANYTHING Al Davis does and thats simply wrong. I’m willing to give credit to Al Davis for the things he does great and hiring Jon Gruden was great and providing Gruden the team that he did was great. I don’t want to get into this again but he really put out a great product and I appreciated it but its been terrible ever since then and hard to explain.
If some fans think everything Al Davis has done over the last 6 years is anything good…age must not be the problem with AD because too many different kinds of people share his ideas and that just makes them a cult.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:42 pm

I was hoping Russell would come in a little bit slimer. He looks bigger to me.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
Im bent over and loving it. Thinking of Joe Montana gets me real hard.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
I swear that if Al Davis told people to put a gun to their head and pull the trigger or to drink poison, some would do it.
I’ll concede that Gruden did a poor job in Tampa Bay. Fine. Gruden and Bruce Allen did a poor job and they failed but their seasons looked incredible when you compare them to Al Davis’ in that same timeframe. The Great Al Davis couldn’t do better in his 6 year stint than Gruden and Allen. Once again…it tells me that if you put Gruden, Allen and Davis in the same building, you have a winning product that can reach the Superbowl.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:46 pm

July 30th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Not much to opine on here ….I still expect Burgess to depart. If what’s being said is true of Burgess’ insistence on being LDE. Ellis being named the starter there pretty much seals the deal.
Sad for Shields. Injuries …bummer.
ABSOLUTELY GREAT news on ONeal. Hopefully he can regain form. That guy was crucial, absolutely pivotal to the Raiders ground attack being Elite. I see them very slowly working him in during the season if he remains on the mend.
Its clear to see that Cable’s “learning intensive” practices are going to be often criticized by the media and maybe fans if the Ws don’t come running in.

Yep they’re just going to let Walter go, and act like that shitty line he played behind didn’t have anything to do with his performances. Dude didn’t sling the rock and break records in the PAC-ten and all of the sudden forget how to play QB.
I fault the SEC and ESPN for the Jamarcus hype. That conference and some of the players in it are overrated…except Dmac, he’s cool.

There’s Someone here who should read this:
Antisocial Personality Disorder is a condition characterized by persistent disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others that begins in childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood. Deceit and manipulation are central features of this disorder. For this diagnosis to be given, the individual must be at least 18, and must have had some symptoms of Conduct Disorder (i.e., delinquency) before age 15. This disorder is only diagnosed when these behaviors become persistent and very disabling or distressing.

Here we go again first i heard DHB signed 62 mil than 54 mil now 38 mil 5 years that is not to bad for 7th pick. bet Craptree holds out Al just jacked his payday. if we would have waited till he signed would be paying more, Also I wont belief that DHB twitter stuff till friday thats when i heard he was showing up after contract is approved by league.

July 30th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
Walters career stats 3 TD’s/ 16 INT/ 51 SAcks in 333 attempts… oh I forgot the fumbles… Would have liked to see what he could do in ‘07 but quiffin like mcclown instead
July 30th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
The fact is…Walter needs an offensive line who can protect him. He never had that in Oakland so he obviously wasn’t a good fit.
July 30th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
24, I know Gruden was a good coach in Oakland. I didnt like his personality or philosophy but he helped turn things around. The Raider were relevant again but he had help from the old man. Gruden wanted 2 shake away and thats that. Happens in the world. Time to move on.

Hey…at least Walter can say he got drafted in the 3rd round. Teams could have passed on him throughout the draft. This means he got a decent paycheck as a 3rd rounder and even though Al Davis might have screwed him in some ways, he still had a job and still got paid over that period of time and at least Al Davis acknowledged that he felt bad for Walter after what happened to him in 2006 so in one way, he hurt him but he helped him in other ways.
July 30th, 2009 at 6:23 pm
If Dakota is right (and he has been occasionally) about the DHB contract, then it demonstrates why the Raiders have the highest wage bill and the lowest average performance. Madness.
Sedrick Ellis was No7 in 2008 and his contract is for $49 million, with $19.5 million guaranteed. Which wally has agreed a 42% premium on that?

DHB’s deal is reportedly 6 years, $62 million with a $32.5 million dollar signing bonus and $55 million guaranteed over the life of the contract.
It is a 42% increase over last year’s #7 pick and it rivals this years #1 pick Matt Stafford’s contract (6 years, $72 million)

I’d like to hear Branch talking about knocking heads off too but of course…if hes going to quietly kill people, I’m ok with that but lets start showing the skills this year finally because hes been nothing but soft up to this point.
July 30th, 2009 at 6:49 pm

Branch was a rookie last year and he broke his arm hitting someone. That doesn’t sound soft to me. Plus he is a hell of a gunner on ST’s. I saw him at the hustling down the field to the point of attack several times with that cast on his arm. Don’t under estimate this kid.
July 30th, 2009 at 6:51 pm
“at the hustling”?
July 30th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
But you can’t tell till after a few seasons. There are players like Bob Sanders, and others like Brian D. We need that attitude on the team, and we have lacked such a thing for years.
July 30th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
There is no excuse for FAT BOY showing up at 270.
He clearly has no control of himself and will eat his way out of the league in three years.

This article has a lot of great quotes in it. Russell seems to be saying the right things and the vets they brought in seem to be doing the right things as well.
RaiderBeat said Russell was coaching the receivers on running routes.
Hopefully they keep their attention to detail throughout camp and the season.
You also gotta wonder if there comes a time where these drops from D-HB start getting to him mentally. they are going to have to bring this guy along
