Report: DHB agrees to terms
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, July 30th, 2009 at 7:02 am in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders have reportedly come to terms with top pick Darrius Heyward-Bey, according to former NFL Network and current ESPN-to-be correspondent Adam Schefter via Profootballtalk.com
It remains to be seen whether the deal will be finalized before this morning’s practice. Check my Twitter account for an update on the field to see if Heyward-Bey takes the field.

I’m not surprised Walker & Gallery will start on the PUP list, but I am surprised that Oren O’Neal isn’t joining them. With Lorenzo Neal & Luke Lawton at FB we’re pretty solid there. I’d shelf him as a precaution, like we did with Michael Bush in 2007

Now get out there and prove the haters wrong!

DBW: Danny Southwick is a football player. Larry King married his mom. He’s very talented. please get educated before coming on here and shouting nonsense about a future star in the NFL …

good morning Exla, Holla …
it’s a great day, isn’t it?
Heyward-Bey is in the fold before camp opens this morning!

Danny Soutwick
In the Thunderbirds’ West Coast offense, Southwick threw for 3,200 yards and just under 30 touchdowns and received letters and scholarship offers from over 60 programs from major conferences.
So he selected the Cougars coming directly out of high school.
However, he did not enroll until after serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
This is where the plans change.
A couple of weeks after enrolling in Corvallis, Ore. Coach Erickson left for the NFL and left Southwick with another hiccup in his plan.
“I was impatient, and decided to transfer to Dixie State,” Southwick said.
The move was sudden and close to the season opener for Dixie.
While with the Rebels, Southwick threw for over 2,000 yards and led the team to the Junior College National Championship game and back-to-back top-five finishes.
“When he was hot, he was as good as anyone I’ve ever coached,” said former Dixie State coach Greg Crowshaw. “Even here, he had all the abilities to get it done. We knew he was a special player.”
His last year of college football was spent at Occidental, an NCAA Division III school located in southern California.
When it’s all said and done, Southwick competed at every level of College Football other than the NAIA
“Everywhere I went, I learned a lot from the coaching staffs and my teammates,” Southwick said of his travels. “It gave me the opportunity to mature as a player and person.”
Upon completion of his senior year at Occidental, Southwick began working with quarterback guru Steve Clarkson, who has worked with the likes of Ben Rothlisberger, Matt Leinart, and J.P. Losman, and trained at Athletes Performance – an institute focused on prepping college players for pro combines.
Ohhh and we think he might be BSJ’s nephew!!!

With DMB and Murphy signed, Schilens and JLH already safe and Walker on the PUP list – that presents a big opportunity for one of Holland, Franklin or Watkins to grab the 5th spot. Mind you, none of those three really inspire and Bayes and Miller are just (very, very, very short) ball boys.
We surely can find another decent WR in the next few weeks – preferably one big enough to help in the red zone?
July 30th, 2009 at 7:16 am
“hes on a mission and its all part of the plan”
He performed so well that during his workout with Collie, one scout stopped the drills just to find out what his name was.
“I knew all I needed was a chance, and I am just grateful to have had that opportunity,” Southwick said.
From there Southwick first received a tryout with the Carolina Panthers in mid-April. Two days later, the Oakland Raiders had him on a plane headed for the Bay Area to meet with front office personnel and workout with quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett.
The Raiders must have seen something they liked, because Southwick was invited back for a mini-camp.
“To be here, from where I have been is a great opportunity. The Raiders have been great, and coach Cable and the staff here are building something really special, I am just grateful to have the chance to contribute anyway I can.” Southwick said from Oakland Friday night. “It has been a long road, a lot of hard work, but to have the chance to compete with guys at the highest level in the world is an honor.”
No matter how long the road has been, for Southwick it was all just part of the plan.

Not sure about Danny ‘the second coming’ Southwick but, Frye and Gradkowski are mediocre at best. Wouldn’t it have been a better idea to have found a talented rookie QB and let them learn from Garcia?
I thought Sam Keller was a decent prospect – and now he’s working in a bar somewhere. What about Drew Willy or Graham Harrell?

It is a 42% increase over last year’s #7 pick and it rivals this years #1 pick Matt Stafford’s contract (6 years, $72 million)

Real shame about Andrew Walter. I thought he was the real deal. Guess he never recovered from 2006 – not his fault that we had an Oline that forgot it was supposed to keep their QB upright.
Walter still holds many PAC10 records – he beat Elway in touchdowns. So sad that we couldn’t translate that talent to the NFL. Perhaps he will fly somewhere else?
=======================================================
The A.Walter experiment was a textbook case on how not to develop a QB. The Raiders haven’t developed a QB in over 30 years. Hopefully they won’t screw up JaMarcus Russell’s development.
This also might be the last shot Oakland gets to develop a top tier talent out of college. Gotta believe that future high-round QB picks would pull an Eli Manning/John Elway if the Raiders were to draft them in the 1st or 2nd rounds.
Raiders have to get Russell developed.

If Dakota is right (and he has been occasionally) about the DHB contract, then it demonstrates why the Raiders have the highest wage bill and the lowest average performance. Madness.
Sedrick Ellis was No7 in 2008 and his contract is for $49 million, with $19.5 million guaranteed. Which wally has agreed a 42% premium on that?

Oaklifer,
F*ck Burgess… I never really liked the guy since he came here. Good solid DE no doubt, but he never felt like a Raider. I know he has a bad taste in his mouth about the contract he was supposed to get, but hey it happens in the real world too. When i first started looking to move to AZ, I found a job out here first working for Nissan. Great pay plan and hours, I was excited. I moved all my crap down here a week later, went in to fill out my employee packet and drug test, but the guy who hired me got promoted and tranfered to another city and the new guy knew nothing about my hire, so I had to find a new job… Got one that day, but it still sukt.

DBW,
Warren and Kelly are our best DT’s for sure, but they didn’t get any help from the LB’s either. Nnamdi and Kirk obviously thought Ryan lacked in teaching proper technique. hopefully, Marshall will make a diference.
July 30th, 2009 at 8:16 am
Hopefully Ellis has 3 years left at least. My boy is a Cowboys fan and was pissed to loose him, so he must have something left. I didn’t watch alot of Cowboy football last season to remember his play lately. As always it a wait and see senerio with the Raiders.
July 30th, 2009 at 8:18 am
AZ Raider,
Let’s just wait and see what’s to come for the defense. The coaches and players went out of their way to toss Rob Ryan over the cliff and feel very confident (based on the repeated and consistent message) in the scheme, technique, discipline etc…
I am not ready to annoint John Marshall as the savior…let’s just see how they handle San Diego in week 1. That game will tell us all we need to know.

S.D game at home. Also think there is a sense of urgency with this Oakland team. Let’s face it…Al Davis, Russell, Cable and the defense have taken a beating in from fans, media etc…after 6yrs of losing, you have to think the focus will be there this time around.
Whether they win that 1st game, I can’t predict…but a strong showing in the 1st one should help get them to at least 2-2 by week 4. Which would be fine by me.
July 30th, 2009 at 8:39 am
2-2 by week 4. Shoot, if we lose to SD (hopefully) it’s in OT if we do. We had better hand it to Chiefs, Bronco’s and Texans. 3-1 week 4!!!!

S.D is a toss up because the game is at home and the Raiders should be able to compete with them.
Houston is a toss up because the game is on the road. They can beat them…but you also could see a different team within the comfortable confines of that dome they play in.
2-2 is bare minimum
3-1 is possible
4-0 would be a dream come true

Great! I hope they let him play. I think players get lost when they go on injured reserve/PUP.
Even if O’Neal is 90%…it would be better for him to still be able to practice and get a few plays in a game or two.

LOL….I was channeling my inner Tom Cable personnel logic….
I am not too excited about seeing Hiram Eugene or Cornell Green in the starting lineup.
Fortunately there are 30 some days for that to change

no kidding. me neither. we’ll see if Justin Fargas continues to get the bulk of the carries (starter or not) and Sam Williams claims a roster spot again …
the scholarship program is still alive & well in Oakland under HC Tom Cable

I’d rather have Huff, Barnes & Brown starting than Eugene, Green & Alston.
if you don’t put your best players on the field, you’re not going to give your team the best chance for a victory. None of the 6 players listed above would start on a different NFL team, but at least Huff, Barnes & Brown have potential!

I’d like to see McQ take the RG or RT spot this year!
July 30th, 2009 at 11:12 am
Rockstar,
I hate to say this. But once Jon Alston gained those 20 extra pounds AND retained his “Raider Speed”….that put Ricky Brown in a backup role.
Of course its still early and lets hope the training camp sorts out who the best players are.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:13 am
Cornell Green and Hiram Eugene were the starters at the end of the year. That’s probably why they are starting on the 1st day of camp.
Of course…Michael Bush was also the starter on the last game of the year. But injury probably doesn’t count

Brown might be the starting MLB if Morrison doesnt get his Sheeet together
=======================================================
Morrison is a well-regarded MLB in the league. He is as big a lock to start as Nnamdi Asomugha. He is also a leader on the team. Plus, he has the cover ability that the Raiders covet. And we all know that the Raiders system emphasizes speed and coverage ability over hard hitting tackling and run stoppage.
Run stopping and pass rush is the primary responibility of the front 4. The Back 7 is supposed to lock down the opposing passing game.
Ricky Brown has to beat out Jon Alston to get on the field.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:22 am
No Huff, no Burgess, no Morrison, healthy Kelly = better Run D.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:25 am
The Raiders draft and free agency was a clue into how they felt about each position going into 2009 camp.
They saw the weaknesses as:
1. Safety
2. Defensive End Depth
3. Linebacker depth
Other than Michael Huff/Hiram Eugene…the Raiders are satisfied with the starters on defense.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Morrison is overrated as FUG.

Old Al coulda drafted a healthy Lavelle Hawkins (who had a better senior year than Desean Jackson)from Cal. Instead he took an injured (missed almost entire senior year) small college guy (Richmond) because he ran a fast 40 at the combine. Typical Al move. Well, the football field is longer than 40 yards and you have to make cuts and get hit and evidently Shields injured knee wasn’t up to the challenge. This was another dumbass -Al Davis on speed- wasted pick.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:34 am
For the most part, I like the defensive starters. Ellis and Scott and DE are upgrades over what we had last year. Alston, his speed, and that 20lbs should be nice at OLB paired with Howard. A LOT of speed on the outside to attack the QB.
Will be very interested to see how this S thing shakes out. I expect Huff and Mitchell to end up as starters, but if they get beat out, then so be it.
July 30th, 2009 at 11:35 am
Dont mind given Alston a shot. He must have worked his ass off to put on the weight. Green has to go, I really am pissed he is with the first unit instead of Barnes, or at least Pears.

****Must read article*****
I was trying to look for an article about DHBs contract negotiations and ended up finding a great article. This article was about DHB before the draft, if I would have read it I would have known who the Raiders were going to draft. If I was Al with all of his bad luck with WRs lately, he was probaly thinking “bring me a WR with 4.2-4.3 speed, good hands, about 6′4 who is humble and has good charater that won’t screw me over by partying once they sign a contract.” Bam!!!! Out pops DHB! Read the article!

I hope he is the real deal. I actually wanted us to draft Crabtree until I thought about how many other teams who need a WR passed on him as well. They keep doging the Raiders for passing on him and taking DHB but there were other teams in need of a WR that passed on the guy as well. I think with Crabtree coming out of college what you see is what you get. I thought DHB had the most upside because of his natural ability, size, speed and hands. He can catch in traffic and I already heared he played B-Ball which really helps you develop your hands. So will wait and see man. I will be cheering for the guy and I understand the strategy for drafting him to open up the field. I am really excited about our youg offensive talent.

Report: DHB signed
I know this is a little late, practice ran all morning followed by an hour of interviews.
So before lunch is served, No. 7 overall pick Darrius Heyward-Bey has signed a five-year contract, as first reported by Adam Schefter and confirmed by a Raiders official.
Sports agent Alvin Keels tweeted the deal had $23.5 million guaranteed and $38.25 million in base salary with a maximum value of $54 million, according to his league source. Why does Keels care if he doesn’t represent DHB? Because he’s got the No. 6 pick, Andre Smith of the Bengals.
Raiders coach Tom Cable would not confirm the signing, saying he did not know because he was at the first practice of training camp. DHB wasn’t because the deal was still being worked out at team headquarters in Oakland.
In other quick-hit news …
** Still no Derrick Burgess, and don’t ask Cable about it because he doesn’t want to talk about it.
** DHB could be at today’s afternoon practice if the league approves the contract in a hurry. If he is, one player won’t be — and the guess here is quarterback Andrew Walter will be cut (and gladly so).
** Wide receiver Javon Walker (knee) starts camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Robert Gallery doesn’t, but he rather he is on the Reserve Non-Football Illness/Injury list as he recovers from an appendectomy.
** Practice had no contact. Nothing but position drills and semi-plays being run as they focused on footwork, being in position, etc. When the offense lined up with the defense, the play was whistled dead before it could develop beyond the line of scrimmage.
It will stay this way for another three days of two-a-days before the pads go on Monday. Players all sing the same tune — this is smart, this is better — and of course they do. The easier the better, considering they’ve got to be here 31 days.
** Position competition won’t start until Monday, but here are people discerned to be on the first team: LT Mario Henderson, LG Paul McQuistan, C Samson Satele, RG Cooper Carlisle, RT Cornell Green, TE Zach Miller, QB JaMarcus Russell.
On the defense, LE Trevor Scott, NT Gerard Warren, DT Tommy Kelly, LE Greg Ellis, SLB Jon Alston, MLB Kirk Morrison, WLB Thomas Howard, SS Tyvon Branch, FS Hiram Eugene, CB Nnamdi Asomugha, CB Chris Johnson.
It’s worth noting Ricky Brown also did some first-team at middle linebacker.

July 30th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Position competition won’t start until Monday…
It’s worth noting Ricky Brown also did some first-team at middle linebacker.
***
Ricky Brown is a tackling machine. He’s going to be a starter and so are Morrison & Howard. Alston is garbage. He was resigned for special teams.
I wonder if Brown will impress enough in camp to move Morrison out to strong side? That would allow Morrison to use his speed on the edge, but I think Brown has questionable cover skills. I’m torn with this decision
July 30th, 2009 at 1:19 pm
Hey brien,..still waiting to hear about what we mentioned,..but gotta get movin,…take care of these blog losers ok bro? Out.

It’s an awesome day to be a Raiders fan. Isn’t it?
Here’s to DHB earning every dime of that contract! It’s hard to temper my enthusiasm, when a kid has this much potential…BUT, we all need to remember he’s only “just another rook” until he does anything. Same thing for Mike Mitchell, et al.
Because of the over-hype of the so-called “reaches” Al took to get DHB and MM, they will now be some of the most (the most?) scrutinized draft picks in all of football.
Physically, both guys have the bodies and the tools/gifts to make it…now, do they have what it takes to really contribute at a high level as rookies? If they’re not, is the team good enough with others starting in front of them?
I hate the fact we may need to rely on the rookies. I’d much rather we see the rookies push the vets fighting for their jobs…and they’ll all be better for it. If one-of-every-two new guys on the team blossoms into good pro’s right away, it would be a HUGE success story.
MMMmmm…football.
