Davis makes first appearance

A few news and notes from Friday’s second practice:

– Raiders owner Al Davis watched his first practice of training camp, accompanied through much of it by his son Mark.

Davis talked briefly with Robert Gallery, rehabbing from an offseason appendectomy, and spoke with George and Josh Atkinson, the twin sons of former Raiders defensive back George Atkinson and star sprinters and football players at Livermore’s Granada High School.

– Drills were supposed to be at three-quarters speed, but the Raiders second team defense was apparently coming up short of that at one point in the eyes of defensive coordinator John Marshall.

“You guys are going to stay second group for the rest of your (bleeping) life,” Marshall said. “You’re going through the motions. Grow the hell up.”

– More emphasis on teaching _ quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett has quarterbacks JaMarcus Russell, Jeff Garcia, Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye line up in a row in front of them where he spends a few minutes quizzing each on protections and routes.

– Jonathan Compas, an undrafted free agent guard from U.C. Davis, was getting reps as a third team center.

– Erik Pears, the free agent tackle/guard signed as a free agent, jumped offside during one drill.

– The second-team offensive line during one sequence consisted of left tackle Khalif Barnes, left guard Chris Morris, center John Wade, right guard Marcus Johnson and right tackle James Marten.

– Hiram Eugene spent some time with the second-team defense, with Michael Huff working with the first team at free safety.

– Rather than music during stretching as in the Lane Kiffin regime, the Raiders get a running dialogue from strength and conditioning coach Brad Roll.

“We’re bringing in the smokers tonight. You name it, we’re smoking him,” Roll said of the post-practice meal.

“Stretch those quads _ a happy quad makes a happy hamstring,” Roll said.

– Four more “learning intensive” practices before the hitting begins on Monday . . .

Why could Barry Bonds (and countless others) double their size and become far better than they were before?

    Steroids connections inevitable

Much ado about Ervin Santana’s early relationship with trainer Angel Presinal, who has links to the steroids scandals (and whose last name sounds like a steroid, no?). Seems to me that we hardly need to look that deeply into players’ pasts if we’re trying to tarnish them by association; each one of them has shared clubhouse space with known users.

Only Baseball Matters has an amazing post about a 40-year-old Sports Illustrated article about drug use in baseball — and what it says about the writers, teams and athletes who waited 35 years before doing anything about it.

He quotes from that lengthy SI piece:

“A few pills—I take all kinds—and the pain’s gone,” says Dennis McLain of the Detroit Tigers. McLain also takes shots, or at least took a shot of cortisone and Xylocaine (anti-inflammant and painkiller) in his throwing shoulder prior to the sixth game of the 1968 World Series—the only game he won in three tries. In the same Series, which at times seemed to be a matchup between Detroit and St. Louis druggists, Cardinal Bob Gibson was gobbling muscle-relaxing pills, trying chemically to keep his arm loose. The Tigers’ Series hero, Mickey Lolich, was on antibiotics.

Angel Presinal worked with Brian Downing who will be inducted into the Angel’s Hall of Fame this month.

    Hey Random Drug Trester,

Ever thought that baseball fans are so up in arms about steriods, not because of how much better that they play on it and we think they are cheating, but that these players continue to act like 5 years old caught with there hand in the jar. These guys get caught red-handed, failing drug tests is about as obvious as can be, and are so self-absorbed they continue to lie to the fans, who pay there salary in effect, and treat us like we are either so stupid, gullible, or in awe of them that we won’t care if they both cheat and than lie to our faces about it. Get a clue dude.

And I played JC baseball, had Kyle Lohse on my team, and none of us were doing juice. The Butte football team was a different story, however.

So my buddy, a huge lib in Portland and a car salesman, is up in arms about the “cash for clunkers” deal, and not just because it is a total nightmare and his dealership has yet to receive some of the money.

When as a dealer, he told me, you sign into the site, a terms and conditions screen pops up, just like most sites, but he decided to read it. It scared the crap out of him, and for those against W’s wiretaping should be up in arms. As a dealer, when you sign in, you agree that your computer, when logged in, is now gov’t property, and can be seized for any reason, and all your personal information can be seized, including browsing history and so on. Nothing my come out of it, but another “liberty” being taken away, even if just a little bit. Our civil liberties, capitalism and the constitution are dying the death of a thousand cuts before our eyes folks.

Quit your damn whining. The car program is good policy. The T&C only apply when logged onto a fed system, which sounds like SOP to me.
Go cry to Limbaugh about soci@lism or buy another gun – whatever gets you through the night. Of course, if your house catches on fire don’t call the gov’t-run commie Fire Department.

  • vegas raider

Why do they have to tap in BSJ? They don’t HAVE to to properly run the system. It’s a continuation of Bushian policies, of which you are no fan of.

And who says it is a good policy? Not the people using it, the gov’t underfunded it causing a complete headache right now.

Absolute BS. You log on to a gov’t computer system, you expect they can monitor you. And I didn’t call you a commie.

Also, any car dealer should be scstatic about Obama’s cash for clunkers policy. Estimates were that 250K cars were sold in July, at least 40K of which were directly attributable to the program. Stop hating on the govt. They gotta do something to help the people out.

    BSJ,

Yes sales were up, put these dealerships (including the one my buddy works at) are in the hole for 6 figures, waiting for gov’t checks on rebates. When they announced they ran out of money, questions started arising if they gave rebates to customers that they won’t get refunded. Would you be willing to say that every dealership is going to get there money back, being that it is already underfunded? Dealerships are panicking, and 75% (according to the NY Times) of people coming in with their “clunkers” are being turned away. Poorly planned, poorly run. Shocking.

Well, got it off my chest, I can eat my B-fast in peace and than off to wager on Baseball. Wife was sleeping and needed to yell at someone. Thanks for your ears.

What a crock of sh!t. If your bussy is in the hole for 100K minimum, he sold at least 50 cars under the policy. OBAMA SAID ALL SALES WILL BE HONORED AND PAID AND ANNOUNCED MORE MONEY TO KEEP THE PROGRAM GOING! Your buddy should be praising Obama for the business.

And 75% are being turned away because they don’t meet the guidelines. Older car, under 18 mpg, etc. So shocking.

I work for a Toyota Dealer. #1 dealership of any make in the Phoenix area. We gave out a sh*tload of those rebates and our Sales Dept. is not worried about any of it. They shut down the program but we were told all rebates dated before the announcement will be honored, so no one is panicing here…

just some inside info, from the dealership side.

Soooooooooo, what up with the Silver & Black?

  • http://RaiderO Raider O

There are programs that only the owners know about, they get huge rebates from the Factories on every car sold, and then they make money on trade-ins, and service has specail programs too that AZ can share with you. ( my exp is in Sales & finance, but not service)

    “O”

Been a Toyota owner for 13 years and have worked for Toyota for 7. Awsome automobile and great clientel.

That’s funny O, in 2000 I convinced my best friend to buy the 4×4 Tacoma TRD. He had it a few years, put about 80k on it and had to get something bigger when his wife got preg. So I bought it from him for $11,500. I drove it a few years and put another 80k on it, and sold it for 11,000! Cost me $500 for for years of an awsome vehicle.

My rock crawler is an 85 Longbed! Bad arse! Looks like it just came off the showroom floor inside, but the paint is all scratched up from plowing through desert brush and light scraps from canyon walls. I bought IT for $3500, put about another $500 into it, and I get offeres on the trails for 7-9,000! They hold thier value, thats for sure.
