Quick hits

Some quick hits from Day 2 of “learning intensive’’ practices:

Q: Is there any update on Derrick Burgess, coach?

Tom Cable: No.

And that’s your official Raiders statement on Burgess, who has missed voluntary workouts for the last few years but has expanded his repetoire.

– Few plays run to completion, even during seven-on-seven drills, which made it more than a little comical when defensive coordinator John Marshall said, “It’s about time for a pick.’’

If the Raiders did manage a pick when quarterbacks were not throwing the ball, now that would have been a story.

– One of the first drills, one that last a good 10 minutes, was positioning for “run fits,’’ or where defenders “fit’’ into gaps to stop the opposition from running.

– Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey got past Stanford Routt during a drill, he drew the praise of Willie Brown, “He’s so fast and quick, got a nice release . . . we’ve got something for you next week, though.’’

Brown didn’t have to wait a week. Routt slowed Heyward-Bey with an initial shove. “Nice hands,’’ Brown said.

Replied Routt: “Gotta slow him down.’’

– Speaking of Routt, Cable said he’s in a competition with Chris Johnson to start at corner opposite Asomugha, and the reps would seem to bear that out.

Johnson said the job is his. More on that later . . .

– Cable didn’t want to delve into specifics, so we won’t here, either, but Trevor Scott is doing more than putting his hand down and rushing a defensive end. More on that later . . .

– Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard have started 32 games alongside each other, but aren’t always on the same page.

“Under, under, under, under!,’’ barked linebackers coach Mike Haluchak with regard to a coverage. “You’ve got to communicate!’’

– Visual evidence (seeing Terdell Sands leave the field house in a tank top and shorts) suggests the defensive tackle is in the best shape he has been since joining the Raiders.

– Recently-waived quarterback Danny Southwick is still around, but not in uniform. He holds a clipboard much of the time, but for a short period of time he was throwing passes to Chaz Schilens and Heyward-Bey. He classified himself as an “intern.’’

– It’s a year to the day since Javon Walker told Al Davis he was considering retirement, after which Lane Kiffin openly questioned his desire. None of that this year. Walker can hardly wait to take the field, although that could be two weeks away.

“When they let me loose, it’s on after that,’’ Walker said.

Walker had plenty else to say about what he hopes is a miraculous comeback season.

More on that later . . .

– Defensive end Jay Richardson has not been getting snaps with the first team, and often not with the second team either.

– Here’s your training camp definition of TMI , or Too Much Information for those of you who are acronym challenged. Tommy Kelly jogged off the field briefly, only to return a short time later.

He went to the restroom, Cable reported.

Not sure if he really had to go, or if it was a false start. He made his fourth false start in two days.

– Five more “learning intensive’’ practices to go before the hitting begins.

“I looked over at you guys and wondered why you’re even out here,’’ one player said.

Yes and no. Kiffin wanted his dad for a variety of reasons, Al wanted Kiffin to improve the O and not worry about the D. Kiffin moved us up from 32nd in offense to 25th. Shoot, if I was the Head Coach, and OC, after Shell, I would have moved us up too. Kiffin did not earn more hiring responsibility. Actually, our pass defense was pretty good for most of the 2006-2008 seasons. Maybe not the best in the league, but certainly in the top third. And with a more sustained pass rush (looking at D. Burgess, towel on head, nursing a “calf” here) it probably would have been top 5. Again, and I have said this a ton of times here. Offenses, HAVE to win games in the fourth quarter in the contemporary NFL. With all the rule changes to “liberate” scoring, defenses are at a disadvantage. Please note the last two Super Bowl games, where ALL FOUR TEAMS, marched down the field and scored in the end. With all the rule changes and going for on it on fourth down, it is not like it used to be as far as defenses making great stands. It’s best to be up by 10-14 points late if you expect to win. We never were.

    Dakota-I agree 100% regarding the T-Shirt….

It’s a gimmick that shows his inability to coach and lead his men….

If this team wants to win 8 games…let Garcia start and also call his own plays…

Anything short of that will result in a 5 win season with Coach Cable being replaced following the year…

    Folks,

Lane Kiffin was hired by Al Davis. Rob Ryan was retained by Al Davis. Hell, Lane Kiffin initially hired Tom Cable.

The past is what it is. Mistakes were made. BIG MISTAKES….especially with free agency in recent times. Another mistake would be playing Jeff Garcia…but I digress.

Let’s see what happens on week 1

  • jhill

Of course we can’t get a reason for not improving at all this season. Despite not having a 1st year starter, despite DMac being healthy, despite speed at the WR spot, despite no Kwame Harris, and despite no coaching drama, we won’t be any better. LOL!

I know, I know, it’s still Al Davis calling the shots, so of course we won’t win.

  • Coach Elkins

This season is going to be a trainwreck….WRITE THAT DOWN!

This year, 5-11 won’t feel like improvement! The fact that there is so much optimism with what happened last year makes me want to puke….

We are laughed at by the whole league…and we deserve it!

  • SNB Defense

    Coach Elkins,

One would hope….with the history of 4th QTR breakdowns and DT rotation issues…that conditioning would be at or near the top of the list of priorities

Dogg, can’t evaluate the Cabrera trade. Too angry. And not at Cabrera. This new ownership group of the Oakland A’s is a complete and total disaster. Fisher and Wolf make Al Davis look like Good King Wenseslas. Couple that with the fact that Billy Beane is beginning to look like Dave Twardzik, and the A’s are a catastrophe with no hope.

    July 31, 2009
Raiders training camp day 3 practice 1 quick notes

Punt return duties – Samie Parker, Nick Miller, JLH

Chaz Schillens and DHB worked on pass catching drills together in the morning and both worked with the first team all morning.

DHB was catching everything when he was pushing off with his left leg and moving right. When he lined up on the right and went left, pushing off of his bad leg, he had trouble making his cuts and catching the ball…that hammy might be bothering him, but he told us that he was 100% yesterday.

Defensive backs practiced double teaming receivers

WR Nick Miller looks quick and keeps jumping out at you. He is also catching everything thrown his way.

As we walked to one side of the practice field, Jeff Garcia was in the corner taking a piss and blasting us, “Can I get a little privacy please?” The media got a laugh about that. Pissing on the field and asking for privacy.

During 1 on 1 drills, Michael Bush beat Thomas Howard and made the catch. Howard looked over to a camera guy and said, “Don’t be filming that shit man!” It was pretty funny and everyone laughed.

Oren O’Neil made a smooth double-move and turned Slade Norris around, making him look like a rookie, and caught a ball over his head…O’Neil looked pretty good.

Camp punter, Ricky Schmitt was booming 50-yarders in practice to nobody. His punts looked pretty good, but not 4.5s hang-time…more like 3.8s

Javon Walker was on the field doing some instruction with Ted Tollner. He was trying to help out some of the receivers with their rout running.

McFadden is in the slot an awful lot. He starts in the backfield and then runs into formation before the play. He’s been going against a corner quite a bit.

The blitz has been a defensive staple. Thomas Howard is coming off the edge, Morrison sometimes moves to the edge and blitzes and other times blitzes the middle.

I am bummed to see Cabrera go. I guess this means Crosby slide back into the SS spot. I hope he can stay healthy.

The season rides on the oline period. We can have all the speed and talent at Hb, but if the line can’t protect we are doomed so hopefully we can do it lets hope Green don’t get to start at tackle, then again, we don’t know about barnes, seems he had the same problem in jville. That being said I have faith in cable he can turn anyone into a blocking machine…………with the exception of kwame!

After the second day of “teaching practices” Tom Cable once again faced the local media.

Cable has said that his new and different approach has drawn positive feedback from his players:

Lorenzo Neal said to me, “You know in 17 years, I’ve never seen anything like this, but I can’t believe how much we’re getting out of it,” you know just in our talks, in our room, or in meetings, or whatever, it’s a chance to really sort it out and work through it before all of a sudden you put the combative part into it, which will start on Monday.”

This is unique because we don’t have the stress, we don’t get beat up, we’re really learning and relearning, and for the veterans there’s some review obviously, but there’s little details. Everything comes up. Something came up today with Cooper Carlisle and Cornell Green that they’ve probably had 4-5 other times in the last two years but bang it happened again today. It’s just a chance to talk it through, reteach and just kind of solidify it in their brains, OK, we got it.

In addition to focusing on the basics, this manner of running camp gives the players a chance to get acclimated to being in camp once again, or as Cable said yesterday, to get their minds right:

We’re getting enough of that and again, if you remember, part of this is the routine too of a two-a-day, and the whole process of getting taped, in meetings, and getting out of bed and back to bed, and all those sort of things. So, we feel like we’re accomplishing exactly what we set out to do.

As of now, there are no updates on the Derrick Burgess situation, and Tom Cable would not devote time to Burgess except to say that there are no updates. Darren McFadden, has been lining up at receiver, and Cable would speak on this use of McFadden:

You know, a lot’s been talked about with that, but if you look at us the last six weeks of the season and particularly the last three weeks, we used him more in that role, extensively in the last two weeks, and it seemed to really compliment everybody, it opened everybody up. I think it adds a lot to us and he’s a guy that there’s no question has to get a number of touches in a ballgame and he helps everybody around him.

Coach Cable talked about the level of competition at wide receiver, and how there were several qualified players fighting for that last spot:

The No. 1 thing is catching the ball and making plays. There’s no question we’ve emphasized the need and the importance of improving our passing game. I think it will really come down to who can do that, who can make plays catching the ball, getting open and run after the catch. All those things go into that position.

He praised fourth round pick Louis Murphy:

He’s a guy that came out of a good program and is very passionate about playing the game. For him, it’s just learning our offense, a new system for him and just keep doing it but he’s progressing very well.
