Burgess nets probably a third and a fifth
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, August 6th, 2009 at 9:28 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Here’s the compensation for the deal which sent Derrick Burgess to the New England Patriots, as relayed by beat Steve Corkran, who called while I was driving home from Napa:
As it stands, the Raiders get a third and a fourth round draft pick in 2010. The Patriots, however, wanted to give Oakland a third and a fifth. Problem is, they don’t currently have a fifth-round draft pick. So it was stipulated that if New England acquired a fifth-round pick from someone else, that pick would be dealt to Oakland.
So expect the Patriots to acquire a fifth-round pick from someone else so they can keep their selection in the fourth round.

we’ll take the 3rd rounder.
August 6th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
not bad. but why are we always dealing with the freakin pats? burgess will thrive in n.e. it would have been nice to have both ellis and burgess. time to step up, trevor!!
August 6th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
looks good to me.an extra 3rd-we’ll take it.
August 6th, 2009 at 9:37 pm
Mark this down, the fastest 40 time available in the 3rd round is who we traded Burgess for.
August 6th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
i know i’m probably wrong, but i believe NE has peaked.their def. is old and Belicheat is trying to fill it with older,on the decline players.they have to replace their LBs due to age.if their off. doesn’t light things up,they will fade.
August 6th, 2009 at 9:47 pm
In the third round with the 90th pick, the Oakland Raiders select Fasty McSpeedster, CB from NE Southern Louisiana Tech.
August 6th, 2009 at 9:50 pm
Lefty12,
Name NEs LBs.
August 6th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
I begged for the Raiders to go to a 3-4 with Burgess and Howard at OLB and Morrison and whoever to play ILB, with Kelly and Richardson being perfect fits as 3-4 DE’s. Burgess should thrive in that system, but as far as we’re concerned, we’re never going to switch schemes and burgess can’t stop the run as a Strong Side DE and refused to play the weak side – I’ll take the third and whatever else we get – that will give us extra ammunition to trade up a few spots (from 32 of course
) in the first round next year or make other plays – to get a 3rd for Burgess at this stage is great for us – he’ll probably do well in NE but I’d rather have Ellis and the pick – he would have been gone next year anyway with no compensation and this way our run defense will be better and we won’t lose any sacks (Ellis may be better at this stage than burgess anyway given all burgess’ injury problems and the fact that he’s 32 and a speed rusher).
Moving forward, Mike Mitchell better be awesome because Ron Brace was sitting there for the taking for us in Round 2 and Terdell is being outplayed by a bust top 5 pick in Warren who is a three technique not a one gap run stuffer.
Al finally has all his speed toys at the skill positions and the franchise QB (everyone here needs to “root for Route” because unless we have three top flight corners Al may draft another – all we need are a couple more pieces on the oline and a NT and we’re highly competitive. Two more good drafts and we have the makings of a perennial playoff team (assuming all goes well with our current core players, all of which I am very high on).
August 6th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
sweep the leg – you beat me to my joke
August 6th, 2009 at 9:56 pm
so did Norco lol
August 6th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Sounds like a decent deal especially IF the Raiders keep the 4th rounder. Burgess was leaving after this year anyway, so might as well get some picks or players in return for him. He will get hurt in NE anyways. Even IF the Pats do get a 5th, then the Raiders should try and trade down and get another 4th on draft day.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
they already shipped out grabel(?),bruski(?) is old.they are resting their hopes on Mayo and mcKenzie who were drafted they last couple of years.the rest are FAs they have signed, but Grabel and Bruski were their 2 stars.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
This trade just highlights the blatant hate the media has for the Raiders. We always get dogged for any and everything we do as an organization. The Patriots are the complete opposite and the media claims they are the best in the last 5-7 yrs. Their coach is the best, their QB is the best, their video guys are the best, etc, etc, etc….Yet the Pats are there to scoop up anything we fart.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
They reached for Burgess cus just a couple weeks ago they tried to coax Willie McGhinest out of retirement. Al Davis knew that.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
lets trade our 5th to the patriots for Wilfork LOL technically it would be wilfork for a 4th
August 6th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
Here Lefty I will help you out. Bruschi has 14 years in the league, Adalius Thomas has 10. They are hoping that Pierre Woods and Jerod Mayo develop. They probably will. Derrick Burgess is 9 years in.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
Anybody know david whites twitter page?
August 6th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
they also lost 1 of the best safeties in the game in R. Harrison.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
exactly Oakglenn.their star LBs are old and past their primes, and just because they drafted guys to fill their positions doesn’t mean they can fill their shoes.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
And let’s not forget Lefty, tom Brady is in his 10th year. Joey Galloway is on their roster in his 15th year. And they are going with Sammy Morris (10th year), Kevin Faulk (11th year) and Fred Taylor (12th year) since Laurence Maroney has not panned out at RB. Oh, yeah, and Moss is now 12 years in.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
What happened to all the B.J. Raji supporters? He’s holding out too. Also Eugene Monroe. I get more and more comfortable everyday we have DHB.

August 6th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
Damn! the patriots sound like the 2002 oakland raiders. OLD AS SH!T
August 6th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
With all those old guys the Pats have, they are gonna fall off at one time just like the Bucs. Then Belicheat will bail for a talented team with a bunch of 6-7 yr guys. He’s gonna be looking for Cable’s job.

August 6th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
I dont like discussing the Patriots,..if I did I would go to a Patriots blog.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
August 6th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
Yes they were great that year in 2002 but with essentially the same roster in 2003 we crumbled into 6 years of diaper sh!t
August 6th, 2009 at 10:29 pm
Im always right destri,..any of you fans going to the RNC saturday?
August 6th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
JT,..your point is we were old,..but that team won,..all the young teams since have sucked,..so if your argument is old teams suck,..you are wrong. The Raiders are young, but thankfully they got Lo Neal and Ellis, if not for them we likely go 3-13,…with them, 8-8 is possible.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
I’ll be hugging the Stanford tree Saturday
August 6th, 2009 at 10:32 pm
the 2002 team looked old on superbowl sunday.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:32 pm

August 6th, 2009 at 10:33 pm
No they didnt look old, they looked like the other teams coach knew what they were doing before they did.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Yup I was not making an argument at all just stating how old we were LOL why does everyone wanna make an argument out of what someone else says.
Good job clearing things up NorcoBob.
And just to be even more clear my point was the Patriots time of losing will come soon enough. Even with a healthy Brady under center the QB can only carry a team so much. The Patriots will soon be in the shitter and we can all rejoice
August 6th, 2009 at 10:37 pm

August 6th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
Lefty the Raiders lost the superbowl as soon as the Bucs beat Philly,…you cant change the entire playbook in a week,..maybe if we had two weeks and our center doesnt flip out.

you don’t change the playbook but you can change tendencies and nomenclature, which we didn’t due to our HC and Qb being too stubborn or stupid, however you wish to look at it.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
Figures, that was the one time to decide to play the Super Bowl a week apart from the championship games. Conspiracy I tell you.
August 6th, 2009 at 10:50 pm
How did that Nebraska job go for ole Callahan?
August 6th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
but even with that being said, you are probably correct,TB would have beaten us anyway due to chuckies familiarity with the team.which brings up the question if he would have won a SB if he hadn’t played a team he formally coached and helped build?
August 6th, 2009 at 10:56 pm
Jerry:
What’s the story or Javon Walker? Not a peep in last two days. We were told last week that the dude really felt good, he was moving without pain and seemed to be playing at his previous ability while at Green Bay. The news was so good and so positive, we had a few guys making Javon the “come back player of the year!”
It would be better than awesome if Javon was the old Javon he was in Green Bay. We need a lucky break and that would be it. JR would have another deep threat throwing target. So get off the stool and go get the skinny on him and report back ASAP. Thanks
August 6th, 2009 at 10:58 pm
Nfl networks piece on the 2002 Bucs has Gruden showing the Defense how to defend Gannon and their signature play. Gruden plays Gannon in practice pump faking on a crossing route.
August 6th, 2009 at 11:05 pm
actually we did have 2 weeks before the super bowl. but even in 2 weeks u cant change an entire playbook
August 6th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
Lefty: Yes, TB was playing awesome under Gruden at the time.
However, TB should have lost the prior playoff game, they won on a fluke.
If we would have had any other coach, other than Callahan, we may have beat TB. If Barrett “I’m a drug freak when it really matters not to be” hadn’t freaked out in Tijuana, we may have won. But not with Callahan as our coach. He’s a bum and he proves that AL’s judgement was going down hill at the time…for making Callahan the head coach. Callahan wasn’t running our offense. RICH GANNON was running the offense, but Al gave the credit to Callahan??? You figure???
If Al Davis could have put his ego aside and worked with Gruden and NOT TRADE THE DUDE, we would have won two (2) SUPER BOWLS under Gruden.
Point the finger at Al Davis, he traded Gruden and threw away two (2) Super Bowls. Nice going Al.

Murphy is farther along in his development because of the coaching and players around him. Heyward-Bey would be more NFL ready if I was the Q at Maryland last year. Murphy had Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow to work with. Think that makes a difference??
————————-
Yeah, it makes a difference, what 50 million?
August 6th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
good coaches and smart QBs can devise ways to disguise plays.you can run the same plays with small changes.the QB can change his cadence, pump twice instead of once before making his throw-little things like that.
August 6th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
Callahan got us to a SB with the same team Chuckie couldn’t.i don’t have any lost love for AD,but chuckie was leaving one way or the other.i also don’t believe we would have gotten to any SBs with him as coach, let alone win any.also, people biotch about continuity in our org.,well that is exactly why Callahan was named HC-for continuity.you let your hatred of Davis cloud your thinking.
August 6th, 2009 at 11:30 pm
lol. Watched video on NFL Network of fat Sapp claiming that he has assurances that Garcia will be the starting QB at the beginning of the season.
This guy cracks me up.
August 6th, 2009 at 11:40 pm
Murphy will be a starter this season.
August 6th, 2009 at 11:58 pm
Ah yes Super Bowl 37.
I remember a moment in the game when we had just scored 3 strait td’s cutting the lead to 13 and our defense was tightening the screws. We had Tampa on a third and long when they called the most bs pass interference call on a deep rout that Charles Woodson was covering. TB gets the first down, goes on to score and the rest is history. Sure the game went on to be a rout, but for a moment, we had them on the ropes, if only that call had not happened. Given the clock situation it could have been an entirely different ball game. That my friends was the last time as a Raider fan I can say, “We got screwed!”
August 7th, 2009 at 12:05 am
least i forget and someone hold my feet to the fire (honestly I did forget) the Gannon inteceptions led to the two additional scores but that was also after the fact that the Woodson call allowed TB to chew a bunch of time off the clock. Making it possible for TB to blitz like crazy the rest of the game and forcing Gannon to make those mistakes.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:14 am
Tampa actually rarely blitzed. It is very hard to blitz from a cover2 coverag because it leaves to large of a void in the middle of the field, where Garner and Brown would’ve chewed them up.
Gannon threw 2 int’s with zero pressure on him. He just had a bad game………period
We should’ve ran the football a lot more than we did, Tampa was dropping deep into the zones and the coaches just continued to pass. Wheatley would been running against a pass defense in the second half. Great coaches keep their composure, but our coaches were very arrogant.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:27 am
Lefty:
Sounds good, about continuity, but it’s garbage when it’s with a head coach like Callahan. Callahan was given a winning team, which if it wasn’t for the Tuck Rule would have gone to the Super Bowl. Callahan was too stupid to change anything when he went up against Gruden. It’s doesn’t get any worst than that, period. Gruden blew us away. Callahan ended up in Nebraska and he’s on his way out there. He’s a loser. I don’t hate Al Davis, as I’ve been a Raiders fan for many years and he’s done a lot of good. However, I’m not afraid to jump on his case when he’s off the rocker. And, it’s not true that Gruden would have left. It’s just a nice easy assumption. But, if Davis would have paid him what he was worth and what he deserved, Gruden, like most people would have stayed for the money and because he had a competitive team that was playoff guaranteed.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:31 am
If we get a 2nd and a 5th for Burgess we made of big. The 3rd and 5th is a very good trade. There is no doubt in my mind that Bill will get the most out of Burgess but we weren’t, so fair exchange is no robbery.
I think the player that peple are sleeping on is Matt Shaughnessey, cable keeps talking about these kids Slade Norris and David Dixon. Don’t know crap about either but Cable seems to think they’re players.
If Murphy turns out anything like what Cable seem sto feel he is this WR corp could be something to watch in the coming seasons. DHB’s confidence is growing by the day. I’m starting to feel he will be a real factor after all.
DMC’s drops are puzzling, is he looking out of the corner of his eye for Mitchell? He seems to be drpping more passes than anyone.
What’s gone unmentioned is the camp that JLH and Chaz are having. They are stacking up to be a couple of really good players. Russell could have a great improvement if that is the case. Chaz hasn’t dropped a pass and neither has JLH. That’s top shelf stuff there people.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:44 am
Then why didn’t he stay once the money was offered? was it his pride?? Listen bottom line is he left on his own. Gruden was looking at other jobs the last two years he was here. It got old. So Mr Davis opened the door so he could leave………simple as that.
Bush and DMC are great HB’s no question. But I just don’t get this urgency to dump Fargas. This crap about him not being a quality HB is crazy. There are several team sthat could use a HB of his talent. What seems to bounce of the foreheads of most fans is Fargas’s reliability. He never makes mental errors and is very consistent. That is a coaches dream, He keeps the offense on schedule. Aside from those 80 yard runs that DMC was supposed to make those Fargas 4 and 5 yard pickups are the key to a smooth offense.
I can’t tell you how many times I read in her that DMC would take a Fargas 3 yard run into 80 yards. Well I never saw it. I don’t think anyone else did either. That’s the problem with most fans in here our own players are never good enough to play anywhere else until that actually DO.
August 7th, 2009 at 1:01 am
1st off, there is no guarantee we would have went to the SB if we’d have won the tuck game.and even with the terrible call, chuckie blew the game with his play calling AFTER the call.2nd,i never defended Callahan, just said he took the team that chuckie couldn’t to the SB.
Priest-even though i agree with you about Fargas,if,from what i’ve read,Bush and Mac are picking up their blocking assignments,Fargas could be in trouble.i hope not,but you never know.
August 7th, 2009 at 1:03 am
Don’t care what other teams need Fargas…he’s worth keeping as #3. Bush and McFadden BOTH can be great backs…Fargas peaked years ago. His penchant for running directly into tacklers, even in the open field, is Maddening. But, he’s a great teammate, a great on-field role model, and he never gives less than 100%.
Fargas may be a little over-paid by some standards, but not in my book. As long as he’s the loyal RB who can handle his shared-role, even as he loses carries to the future…he belongs right here. There are lots of reasons this guy is held in such high regard…by the owner, coaches and teammates…and even most fans.
But, it’s time for the young guys to make sure the old-timers like Fargas don’t take too many reps from them.
August 7th, 2009 at 1:21 am
BHP — I fear we may always have to worry a little more than usual about injuries/drops with DMC. He didn’t overwhelm anyone with his ball-protection skills last year.
And, DMC already had (a few) foot issues…never good, especially to start a career. I just hope Cable untilizes the kid more for his talents, than as the battering ram that Lance tried to use him as. Well, even Cable tried it, when he should’ve found ways to get DMC in space instead.
It took the guys in New Orleans a few seasons to figure out the way to use Reggie Bush without killing him early…and I think that’s what Cable’s doingwith DMC now.
August 7th, 2009 at 1:30 am
See ya, Burgess!! Way to go Al — get rid of it before it soured anymore than it already has.
A 3rd and a 5th is probably waaaay more than most in here thought we could get for an unhappy, old, recently injured Burgess…and it sounds like The Old Man worked a really good deal.
It doesn’t matter what Burgess does in N.E. — since he wasn’t willing to perform here, he needed to go asap. Way to go Al, Cable, et al…keep the momentum moving forward.
It’s a great morning to be a Raiders fan. Isn’t it?
August 7th, 2009 at 1:40 am
Lefty12, I think Fargas is the reason these guy’s are picking up the blocking. He’s helping them adjust and that is exactly why I want him here to continue to help them with their assignments until they are up to snuff. A missed block could keep us out of the playoffs. I know that an oversimplification but it could. That is such an intregral part of playing HB. It’s not just the OT’s it’s entire blocking scheme.
If DMC can’t read a blitz a pass may never happen. The same is true with Walker a lot of fans want this guy gone because they can’t see the value in keeping him. Well understanding how to adjust routes is as much a part of route running as the pattern. You have to have veterans to help you see things in the heat of battle. That’s the only reason I want Garcia here is when Russell is not getting the protections right he can step in and say this is what they’re trying to do to you.
Veteran enfluence will be the difference in this team arriving quickly or taking an extra year. I’m sure you guy’s know this but it’s for the ones that don’t.
August 7th, 2009 at 1:46 am
Fargas has been pivotal to Bush and DMC’s developement wether these guy’s realize it or not.
August 7th, 2009 at 1:53 am
Adios!, sports fans!
August 7th, 2009 at 1:55 am
HazeDaze:
You’re right on both counts — Burgess for a 3rd and a 5th ain’t too bad; and DMac might best be used as a Reggie Bush type — flipflopping OUR Bush and Huggy Bear, Jr. with the majority of the “load”.
August 7th, 2009 at 1:57 am
Sorry I put “Haze”; I meant “Hayes”, of course!
August 7th, 2009 at 2:03 am
Burgess will soon learn what Moss and Lamont are already finding out — just because you’re on the Patriots now doesn’t win you a Super Bowl ring.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:15 am
The irony in the Crabtree situation is that the Niners are capitalizing on the fact that Al Davis has lost it, just as much as Crabtree’s agent is. When Al Davis passes on a better player, the next team looking to draft that guy gets a bargain. That’s why the other owners are always giving Al Davis props. They’re trying to legitimize him because this is just one way where his craziness compliments them. Of course, Crabtree’s agent is on to this game, and is vowing to not the Niners pull it off. Keep your eyes on this Crabtree situation, because it’s ALL about Al Davis.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:17 am
Fargas who was the ONLY player wearing the S&B with PRIDE during our darkest days around 2006 and wasnt ashamed of stepping up and being a leader for a looser. and will not act up if his time to step back arrives. nuff said
also a lot of people forget Cornell Greens hand in the developement of Mario Henderson.
add their decent production as starters who could back up their lead, there is not more you can ask for as a rebuilding team
heck i just read in an interview on raiders.com the other day that it was Elvis Whitted that “broke down the game” for JLH while they was roommates in camp and on the road trips.
so dont forget to give it up for Elvis W everytime JL is loose with the ball in his hands
August 7th, 2009 at 2:26 am
maybe Burgess’ unwillingness to be in camp and pass his wisdom in general was the tip on the scale of why he didnt get an upgrade. cause injuries never seem to be a problem with the raiders and their decisions…

Right now, it looks like some spirited competition at MLB between Kirk and Ricky — I think they’ll both start, it’s just a matter of positioning. I have heard some good things about Shaugnessy, so that may be a pleasant surprise at the 3rd round pick. I’ve had a few people tell me that Louis Murphy reminds them of another young receiver who came out fairly low in the draft a couple of years ago and has really done well — Green Bay’s Gregg Jennings (although Murphy is a bit bigger).
August 7th, 2009 at 5:14 am
I think the run D will be better with Brown at MLB
August 7th, 2009 at 5:20 am
The way it looks now, you’re probably right. I wonder if the coaching staff is trying to working them both in at middle, with the intention being to start Ricky, but with the ability to slide Kirk over in case there is an injury or another defensive “package” in play — any talk of their running five defensive backs? I know, right now, it looks like Nnamdi, Johnson, Branch, Eugene and Routt are our five best.
August 7th, 2009 at 5:29 am
Yep tbone, another “package” is what their doing, imo. It would B great if we used a 3-4 like 37% of the time. That would also B A slap in the face 2 Dburg as well, which Big Al likes 2 do on a national stage, imo =)

Ricky Brown is a stud. as long as he’s starting someplace I’ll be happy. All I’ve got to say about that is this … Kirk Morrison better be smashing some fools behind the LOS in preseason if he wants to start at MLB and not strong side

Sands is up !!!
August 7th, 2009 at 6:09 am
considering we got Bush, Branch & Murphy in the 4th Round and we got Scott, Richardson, Schilens, O’Neal, etc even lower than that the picks we got in exchange for Burgess could net us a couple good football players … or the next Arman Shields & John Bowie
August 7th, 2009 at 6:11 am
yeah, too bad we couldn’t have thrown Sands in and made that a 4th Round pick for sure. you know the Pats will screw us if given the chance.
I think it’ll be a 3rd & 5th no doubt. They love to wheel & deal on draft day

Burgess is another example where the production did not come close to matching the salary. Very poor value.
I laugh at all the comments about the Burgess work ethic and how he did not do anything “voluntary” but was always in shape.
He was not in football shape which is why he missed a full seanon in Philly and large parts of others in Oakland.
The Dline will have at least another move with a veteran. I am guessing Sands.

August 7th, 2009 at 7:16 am
It was a good deal, nothing earth-shattering but a solid move.
Fact is:
We “replaced” D. Burgess with Greg Ellis.
Over the last 2 seasons Ellis played in 29 games and had 21 sacks, while Burgess played in 24 games and had 12 sacks.
Looking at production only, it’s evident that Ellis has been a better player over the past 2 years.
And, on top of getting a more productive player to start at DE, we were also able to get Third and Fifth round picks out of this “exchange”.
August 7th, 2009 at 7:18 am

I sure hope losing Burgess doesn’t hurt the team greatly. Acquiring Ellis, but losing Burgess puts the defense right back where we started with one somewhat proven DE and nothing on the opposite side. Dealing proven players or vets for young hopefuls is why the win/loss record has been what it is. We have nothing opposite Ellis to draw a double team or attention. Thus Ellis will, if his play warrants it, draw a double team and his production will be neutralized. Just think of the production we would have had with two proven pass rushers instead of one. Time will tell as always.

Henderson is just a “gentle” BEAST! Scott will do fine opposite Ellis… Besides, Ellis was an upgrade in the run D where we needed the most help. Don’t forget Scott had 5 sacks in a limited # of games…
August 7th, 2009 at 7:39 am
BAG
Fair point, but you have to look past next year, if Burgess stayed and played well, he would be looking for big money in 2010 and would most likely be lost without any compensation.
I’d rather have Ellis in Burgess spot for the next 2 years at a reasonable price, plus the 3rd and 5th rounders we got.
August 7th, 2009 at 7:40 am
How I see the team-
Alot of YOUNG, UNPROVEN talent that the Kool Aid drinkers are already annointing as Pro Bowlers despite the fact that none of them has done squat and the fact that the Raiders organization has not shown the ability to farm young talent into veteran stars.
A defense that hasnt changed in 5 or 6 years and consistently gets gashed by the run and when teams really try and throw get beaten by the pass. ITS THE SAME D AS LAST YEAR!! NOTHING WILL CHANGE.
A coaching staff that borders on pathetic led by a great politician/salesman in Tom Cable. If not for his ” I love all things Raider” campaign last year he would not of sniffed an NFL head job, ever. The rest of the staff is led by old castoffs from other teams who couldnt find jobs elsewhere.

These two statements just showed that yuo have little to no knowledge at all when it comes to this football team or its coaching staff. LOL @ Old cast offs!!!
Tollner, who has 46 years of coaching experience, as USC’s head coach from 1983-86 and led the Trojans to victories in two Rose Bowls and a Pac-10 title.
Lionel Washington, who played cornerback for nine seasons for the Raiders from 1987-94 and 1997, will coach Silver and Black defensive backs., Washington is in his 26th year in the NFL as a player or coach. He spent the past 10 seasons with the Green Bay Packers as an assistant tutoring defensive backs. Packer cornerbacks Al Harris and Charles Woodson earned Pro Bowls berths under Washington’s tutelage. In 2005, Washington’s defensive back corps helped Green Bay lead the league in fewest passing yards allowed per game (167.5) as well as fewest passing first downs (143).
Michalczik has 18 seasons of college coaching experience, including the past seven at the University of California., In 2008 at Cal, he was assistant head coach, co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach and helped lead the Bears to a 9-4 overall record and a win over Miami (Fla.) in the Emerald Bowl. Under his tutelage, Bears center Alex Mack won two consecutive Morris Trophies, given to the top offensive and defensive linemen in the Pac-10., While at Cal, he mentored seven first team all-conference selections. In all, 24 Bears offensive linemen earned some level of All-Pac-10 honors during his tenure, including all five starters making the list in 2004.
Additionally, Cal produced seven 1,000-yard rushers, including one 2,000-yard rusher, in his seven seasons. Most recently, Jahvid Best led the Pac-10 in 2008 with 1,580 rushing yards.
Hackett has served on a Super Bowl and an NCAA National Championship staff during his career. He has been on four division winners as an NFL offensive coordinator, helping lead teams to seven playoff appearances and a 90-54 record. In his last 13 seasons as an NFL assistant coach, Hackett helped nine teams reach the playoffs.
Pro Football Hall of Famer Willie Brown is in his 39th year with the Raiders and 15th season as director of squad development and defensive backs assistant. He was secondary coach for the Raiders from 1979-88, during which the team won two World Championships of Professional Football in Super Bowls XV and XVIII. He also coached the secondary in 1997 while serving as director of squad development.

Nnamdi wouldn’t have signed back if he didn’t think we were heading in the right direction to get it done in a few years time. I’m drinkin that too.
August 7th, 2009 at 7:54 am
Bob M.
I see your point, but “if” Ellis has the season that we all hope has won’t he want a new deal for big money as well? Also, we need to build on what we have and not keep letting productive players go. Sure Ellis replaces Burgess, but we still don’t have another proven threat on the other side. Which was the same problem we had the past years with Burgess.
August 7th, 2009 at 7:55 am
Morning folks!!
Al likes to trade on draft day, so with a 3rd and ulimately a 5th, they can maybe deal one of their 3rds and the 5th to maybe trade up into the end of the 2nd round or something like that.
I still wonder if Burgess reports to New England or if he still wants some sort of extension. I would think the Pats would give him two years, and not much of a rise, see if he takes it.

The irony in the Crabtree situation is that the Niners are capitalizing on the fact that Al Davis has lost it, just as much as Crabtree’s agent is. When Al Davis passes on a better player, the next team looking to draft that guy gets a bargain.
————————————————-
I think it is now apparent that Davis made the smart move, because he knew Craptree would not sign. Not here, and obviously not with anyone. Having a marquee rookie receiver not in camp is very harmful to the team, because it is here that the Q develops his timing and confidence in his WR’s. Even The Russell holdout is not as detrimental because Russell was not going to come in and start anyway. I think both us and the Whiners would want Craptree out there running routes. Sucks to be them.

*********Raider Nation Never Forget!!!!!!************
I hope all of our rookies do well this year more than any other year. I hope DHB turns out to be the truth. I hope Murphy turns out to be just as good. I hope the whole rookie class goes on to be monsters and I hope they do it with the Raiders. I hope DHB turns out to be so good that I am watching him giving a speech crying in Canton, thanking the late Al Davis for giving him a shot. You know why? I will never forget the way they doged the Raiders on draft day and into the week. I will never forget Chris Carter one of the best players and egos to ever play the game flapping his big mouth doging out a younger man starting out just like he did because of what he heard. Not to mention Chris Carter has a son who may be going through this process in about three or four years if he is worth it at OSU this year. Another loud mouth in a suite who can’t be happy with his past accomplishments. Now we see Mr Crabtree and his big mouth crew giving SF heck over signing his contract. DHB was done and ready to go on day 1 second practice. I met Crabtree’s agent Eugene Parker in Ft. Wayne, IN back in the day he was also the agent of Rod Woodson (went to school with him, Dion Sanders, Emmit Smith, etc. No way would he try to make terms like siting out a whole year. Parker makes monewy off of getting guys signed right and on time. He will negotiate hard but if you wasnt to get paid for the time you put in with your client why would you hold him out a whole year? So I see why teams were avoiding Crabtree and his merry band. I siad this before and I will say it again. The Raiders have been known to draft anybody that has a big name rather they fit in the system or not. Now they have a strategy, they are going after guys that are big fast but they also have to have heart and character!!!! Listen to DHB, Murphy, Murry, Mitchell. These guys when they talk sound like good guys man. Listen to DHB talk man you can tell people have put a lot into this kid he listend man. Yeah I am cheering for the whole class. I am tired of watching the media make money off of doging the Raiders year after year. I am tired of players not contributing in a positive way on the team and running to the Patriots system for instant success. I want ESPN to eat there words and I want them to show up begging to get an interview from the silver and black when they make the play-offs. Skip who we did not get they are history man! Start cheering for the whole d@mn team!!! Go Raiders!!!
Am I a little pi$$ed for my squad yeah! I been cheering for them since I started little league football.

The thing about this Crabs idiot, is that NFL players will tell you all the time that it is all about the 2nd contract you sign, as far as really making the big bucks. I’ve heard Mike Irvin talk about it a few times, he says get signed and in-camp early, start balling, and after 3 years you re-work your deal with an extension and one of those Payton Manning type $20 million signing bonus. All this is lost on Crabs representation apparently. Good luck with all that Singletary!!!!

If the Raiders had drafted Crabtree hed be in camp. Senile man would have given him the dough he wanted and hed be in camp. Al is actually usually good about signing picks overpaid or not.

“Sloppy scrimmage for new QB Orton, Broncos draws boo birds.
New quarterback Kyle Orton, acquired from the Chicago Bears for Pro Bowler Jay Cutler in the biggest NFL trade of the offseason, was booed by some of the 13,402 fans watching his unofficial debut at Invesco Field when he threw two interceptions and several bad passes during a structured scrimmage Thursday night.
Orton drew the fans’ ire when he was picked off twice by cornerback Andre’ Goodman, who returned the second interception for a long touchdown.”
===========================================
Bah what kind of fans boo their team in practice? lol
August 7th, 2009 at 8:33 am
The RaiderBeat guys listed their top 10 camp disappointments. I think its waaaay to early to be passing down indictments. However, I don’t like that three DTs showed up on his list:
2. Terdell Sands: Lost considerable weight, but he still doesn’t look the part of a dominant force in the middle
5. Tommy Kelly: isn’t blowing up plays or getting to the QB too often
9. Ryan Boschetti: he hasn’t done much to stand out
Can only hope that these guys kick it up a gear between now and the season. Also, is it time to bring some more competition…DeWayne Robertson??

AZ,
Henderson did look like a beast in the those last few games going up against some of the league’s best. T. Scott played in 16 games and posted 5 sacks. 2 against the Jets, 1 against ATL, and 2 against NE. Sure, I hope he improves, but that still remains to be seen.

Yeah, I just think that Russell, the WRs and the safeties need to get as many reps as possible. If there are gaps…they need to iron them out before week 1.

The Raiders are a pick against the Boys next week on the spread. We have been the beasts of the preseason the last few years (weren’t we undefeated in the bed ‘n breakfast preseason, lol), so it may be an opportunity. Who the 3rd string QB is, is the most important factor of preseason wagering, and Frye seems to be looking good. And yes, getting preseason action probably shows a little bit of an issue, so be it.

244: good post….
i think cable doing a good job in trying to prepare this team for the regular season. contrary to all the haters out there , i believe weare on our way. i see a very exciting team that on the offense side of the ball i see alot of points on the board ( to much talent not to )
we should have an explosive back field and if our young rec’s make plays down field zach miller could make the pro bowl. all this hinges on the offensive line. i’m cool with the left side if the right does a decent job i’m looking at a wide open attack ! that should bring confusion to opposing teams.
more on the line …. if they give our qb time we will
see jamarcus be the franchise he as drafted to be.
if the offense does what i envision ,the defense won’t be on the field as much and should make plays. and should make stops ( i hope ). if the d-line creates pressure everything will fall into place i’m very excited about our secondary.
and the linebackers seem bent on stopping the run. like i say thoug this hinges on the d-line.
bottom line ….
i see an exciting team that will compete we have a tough schedule but we will win games i think the division can be taken week one will say alot (but it won’t make or break our season) . we gonna surprise people those punks on tv will eat crow .
we will knock on the door this year and with
a few additions in the off season we will kick the door down.
just in case one of these lines miss
these bombs just
keep coming at ya………… go raiders 2009.

FRANTZ All right, listen up. You people are not dying on me in combat. You fucking, new guys will do everything to prove me wrong. You’ll walk on trails, kick cans…sleep on guard, smoke dope and diddely-bop…through the bush like you were back on the block. On guard at night you’ll write letters, play with your organ…and think of your girl back home. Forget her. Some hair head has her on her back right now…and is telling her to fuck for peace. This is Han. Those of you who are foolish will think of him as…gook, slope, slant or dink. He is your enemy. He came over on the Chieu Hoi programme. And he will go back there after he fattens on C- rations. And he will be hunting your young arses in the Ashau Valley. Now forget about this Viet Cong shit. What you’ll encounter out there is… hard core NVA, north Vietnamese…motivated, highly trained and well equipped. If you meet Han or his cousins, you will give him respect. And refer to those little bastards as the Nathanial Victor. People, I am tired…of filling body bags with your dumb fucking mistakes. Do you think this funny? Alphabet.

Fargas could have been an elite running back.
***
S&B: where?
the CFL, NFL Europe or arena league?
Fargas is injury prone. Plus he can’t catch passes out of the backfield. He’s not elusive and he doesn’t break many tackles (if any)
the zone blocking system is RB friendly. Thats why you saw Jordan, Rhodes, Echemandu, etc in 2007 and pretty much every RB Denver ever throws back there (besides last year – 7 RB’s on IR?) rip it up when given the opportunity
if it weren’t for the zbs Fargas might be 3rd string or out of the league by now. Certainly wouldn’t be taking any starter reps!
August 7th, 2009 at 10:41 am
I like Fargas, but I think we’re seeing his last year with us — if he doesn’t get traded first. Too bad, because he gets my “One Tough Mutha” Award.

Hey, if y’all want to check out something funny, go onto nfl.com … apparently, the Broncos had their largest crowd ever to watch a scrimmage and Orton really stunk up the joint — two picks in a row (one went back to the house) … they boo’d him, they boo’d the kicker .. hell, they even boo’d the punter … Dawkins has a broken hand … but it doesn’t seem that Josh McDaniels is the least bit worried. All I have to say is: Week 3, baby!

Sloppy scrimmage for new QB Orton, Broncos draws boo birds
Associated Press
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The largest crowd ever to watch a Denver Broncos practice didn’t much like what it saw.
Orton drew the fans’ ire when he was picked off twice by cornerback Andre’ Goodman, who returned the second interception for a long touchdown.
“I had a good day,” Goodman said in a lonely sentiment afterward.

Career Statistics
Completion Pct.: 55.3
Passing Yards: 5,319
TD/INT: 30/27
Orton also was jeered when he threw a pass behind wide receiver Chad Jackson, again when he missed a wide-open Jabar Gaffney in the end zone and also when he floated a pass that cornerback Champ Bailey busted up down the middle.
“Fans can cheer. They can boo,” Orton said. “We’ve got good fans, and they’re passionate about their football, that’s for sure.”
Orton wasn’t alone in the fans’ disapproval. The crowd booed Brett Kern for two poor punts and also let Matt Prater have it for missing consecutive 43-yard field-goal attempts — one to the right and one way left — at the end of the scrimmage.
“I heard a few boos,” Prater said. “I had heard them during other boos, and then I missed a kick and really heard the boos. That’s part of the business.”
Prater hit three straight kicks to end the scrimmage and drew polite applause.
New Broncos coach Josh McDaniels was disappointed in a lot of things about the scrimmage but certainly not the fans’ reactions.
“It’s the National Football League, and that’s what people do, and they’ll cheer you when you should be cheered and boo you when you should be booed,” McDaniels said. “Hey, I’ve been around for a while. I understand that that’s going to happen, and it doesn’t surprise me and it doesn’t disappoint me.”
What disappointed McDaniels was the slew of mistakes all over the field, not that he wasn’t expecting to have mixed feelings.
“I learned a long time ago — in the spring — that as a head coach, you never have a good practice when you practice offense vs. defense,” McDaniels said, “because someone’s always going to make a good play and then the other side is on the other end of it.
“So there’s a lot of mistakes made tonight on both sides. Kyle obviously made a couple, but he certainly wasn’t alone, and we’ll go back to work tomorrow morning and fix what’s wrong.”
McDaniels declined to comment on rampant speculation that safety Brian Dawkins, the cornerstone of his defensive overhaul, has a broken hand and needs surgery.
Dawkins, who’s in his first season with the Broncos after 13 years with the Philadelphia Eagles, was hurt Tuesday. The Broncos have declined to reveal the nature or extent of Dawkins’ injury, saying only that he’ll be out a few days.
Rookie safety David Bruton has replaced Dawkins at strong safety with the Broncos’ first unit, and he fueled the speculation that the veteran’s injury was more serious than the team is letting on when he said after the Thursday morning walkthrough: “What happened with Dawkins, it’s sad, but you get your call, it’s time to step up … and hope for a speedy recovery.”
Dawkins wasn’t on the field Thursday. He plans to skip Friday’s workout to attend a memorial service in Philadelphia for former Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson, who died last week.
McDaniels also declined to confirm reports that the team was close to signing rookie running back Knowshon Moreno, who was the 12th overall pick in the draft.
“I’d love for the guy to sign,” said running back Correll Buckhalter, who has been backing up starter LaMont Jordan at training camp during Moreno’s weeklong holdout. “It’s another added dimension to our offense.”
And Buckhalter shrugged off all the boo-birds.
“The booing doesn’t bother me at all,” he said. “I played in Philly — you get consistent boos there. You have to have thick skin.”

My biggest concern…again…is that Marshall is able to run the defense the way he wants too AND there was agreement on how things were going to go at the time of Marshall’s hiring.
The defense has been unacceptable the last 6 yrs. No ands, ifs or buts about it. Its been weak, easily pushed around, with too much finesse and not enough mean.
I reserve judgement until the week 1 game. Regardless of the scoreboard, look for how the defense plays, the playcalling, how it looks, aggressiveness.

Nnamdi, regardless of what you want to call this defense….they have to stop the run. I like that Marshall is focused on players being in the right place and covering their gaps and all that.
But saying “pass rush cover D” hints at a pre-packaged excuse to get run-over. Defense has to be physical. Otherwise those NFC East and AFC North teams will take our “pass rush cover D” physically assault it!

Scheffler’s constantly injured and beat or best, they certainly do NOT have one of the best O lines.
Clady’s had one good year. Looks very strong, but its early in his career. Jay Cutler made him look very very good with his quick release.
C Casey Wiegemann is a 14 yr vet who seriously thought of retirement this off season.
They do have G Ben Hamilton back after a serious concusion in pre season 08′ cost him the whole year.
Tackle Ryan Harris had debilitating back surgery last year and they’re not sure he can stay healthy.
Guard Chris Cuper’s a jack of all trades master of none. Pretty erratic.
Clady and Hamilton maybe solid. Wiegmann’s a vet who can get it done but is in serious decline.
The rest are questionable. Its the system.
