Patriots announce deal for Burgess
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, August 6th, 2009 at 3:06 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The New England Patriots have announced the acquisition of Derrick Burgess from the Raiders for an “undisclosed draft considerations.”
No confirmation from the Raiders yet. There were unconfirmed reports they were seeking third- and fourth-round draft picks. Burgess, unhappy with his contract over the past three years, forced the issue by not showing up to training camp, with free agent acquisition Greg Ellis taking over his starting job at left end.
With the Patriots, Burgess will be a 3-4 outside linebacker where he ostensibly will be used as a pass rusher.
The wording of the deal by the Patriots, “draft considerations,” indicates that the better Burgess plays, the better the deal for Oakland. Burgess’ production has declined each year he was with the Raiders, with his sack totals going from 16 to 11 to 8.5 to 3.5 (in 10 games).

Undisclosed?? WTF!
August 6th, 2009 at 3:08 pm
What about V Wilfork??????
Did they F us again??????
August 6th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
With the Patriots we already know they are going to be at the bottom of the round.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
For a man that is known for being so cut throat on trades why does he routinely let the Patriots screw us. Al pls block their number!!!
August 6th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
Man, The Patriots sop up Raider players like biscuits n’ gravy.
But the Raiders never get anything in return.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Did we throw in John Bowie?
August 6th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
I hope it was a 2nd RD pick!!!
August 6th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
JerryMac..
According to pft.com, Burgess was acquired for:
“Undisclosed draft CONSIDERATIONS.”
Get your pal, John H. on the blower and get us the low down.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:16 pm
What about a player? LB, DT, anything!!!!!!
August 6th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
How is this going to help us THIS season???
August 6th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
Krappy, how many times are you going to post your lame “biscuits n’ gravy” comparison?
For crying out loud, old man – it was dumb enough the first time, but 3 more times?
Listen, I spoke with your high school pal Oakcrapper about taking you out for a nice old man night on the town. We’re talking some local rec room action, Metamucil and maybe some soft serve ice cream.
How does that sound, old pal?
August 6th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
Raider O,
I agree we need help NOW…screw more draft picks.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
First Gabriel, then Moss, Jordan, Walter, and now Burgess? I don’t get why the Pats are stocking up on Ex-Raiders.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:19 pm
Should have released him and got nothing, because thats what hes worth.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:20 pm
I know you ladies like to piss & moan but T Scott & Ellis will make Burgess’s absence a non factor. Be happy with the draft pick. Burgess hasnt been healthy for 2 years.
Get over it.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
I hope the Pats atleast gave us back the $1.5 m roster bonus they just paid him.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
Glad he’s gone. I don’t care if it was for gift cards. Adios A-hole.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:23 pm
I hate the Pats!!!
August 6th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Now we have room on the roster for one more, perhaps Sulak or O’Neill get a second chance.

I hate Tom Brady
I hate the tuck rule
I hate Bill B
I hate the Moss trade
And this is one more reason to hate the pats:
I hate Burgess to the Pats for a draft pick. Unless it was a 1st RD pick.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
Mike Lombardi, who once-upon-a-time wanted to get Burgess a better Raiders deal, tweets its a 3rd and 5th rounder in 2011 . . .
2 minutes ago from web
August 6th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
A 3rd and 5th rounder in 2011? according to PFT. 2011? That is kinda lame.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
Man…someone earlier said to do a package deal with Walter and Burgess.
Should have moved quickly during the draft…prior to signing Garcia, Frye and Gradkowski. The moment we signed those guys…it made Walter’s trade value nil….
I hope the minimum is a 3rd with considerations as high as a second.
Too bad we couldn’t get a lineman (offense or defense) in a package deal.
But lets move on. Give Trevor Scott a tremendous opportunity!
August 6th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Whats the fuss over Burgess? I don’t see it. He won’t do a thing in New England. His play has declined and he’s more injury prone than Reggie Bush. As soon as it gets cold up there, his joints are going to lock up on him and he will be out for the season.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:32 pm
Im not convinced that T. Scott is going to be an everydown player. Im not encouraged by the fact that Mario has been handling him so easily.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
burgess for 3rd round in 2010 and 5th round in 2011….
August 6th, 2009 at 3:34 pm

August 6th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Krappy, get off the tweeter and into the shower! You’ve got another large dump in your diapers!
Sheesh, does this old dog ever learn his lesson?
August 6th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
now if we can just off sands
August 6th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
That’s not too bad when you think we got Burgess for nothing and paid for his production. So now we move on. I hate to lose him but he wasn’t happy and Cable doesn’t want the distractions.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Why 2011???
Has the 2010 draft been cancelled?!?
August 6th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
A 3rd and 5th two years from now is a good deal. Burgess will be out the league by then. It’s the same type of deal the Pats do all the time which is why they always have so many draft picks. We need to do trades like this so down the road we can package picks to move up in the draft. Cus with this good young team we will be picking 31 or 32 the next 5-10 years.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:38 pm
Kool,..thanks for the updates on Lombardis tweets,…was really good of you. We owe you for that one. You are the man.

Are the Patriots the only team in the NFL that answer’s Al’s calls???
August 6th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
pft.com, via Lombardi. Also reports, that Al was offered a 3rd. (year unknown) and a player for Burgess, from the Eagles.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

Michael Lombardi reports Burgess for a 2010 third rounder and 2011 fifth rounder. That’s a good deal for a 30-year-old off 3.5-sack year.

They owed us for the Moss trade, and this doesn’t make up for it!!!!
I hate the Pats, as if the Tuck Rule wasn’t enough, nowwehave to add the Miss and Burgess trade.
Even J Taylor was traded for a 2nd RE pick. He was 33!!!
August 6th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Afternoon Fellas.
Burgess has been a injury prone one dimensional player His entire career.
He also is a notorious no show in the offseason conditioning program OTA’s etc.
What kind of message does that send to some of the younger GFuys on the roster?
Not the kind of attributes I’m looking for in a player.
Burgess is a situational pass rusher…when healthy.
The end.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Still, now there’s no name recognition at all on the Raider D-Line.

I dont mind them getting rid of Burgess. He is being known for being the type of selfish player that Cable is trying to get rid of. I just wish we got a player in there somewhere.
August 6th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
4eva,
So, to recap what you are saying:
If Burgess was a better Dancer, we could have traded him for a 2nd!

August 6th, 2009 at 3:54 pm
4eva, Shaughnessey’s play has allow the Raiders to let go of Burgess eve though Ellis is t the age he is.
Also Mario Henderson is no slouch the fact that T Scott is having problems with him is actually GOOD news.

“It’s a great atmosphere,’’ said Walter. “True pros. Guys that go to work. Positive vibes, from the top down. The organization has had success. What else could I say? It speaks for itself.’’
Walter said the Patriots offense is the most explosive that he’s ever been associated with, but he acknowledged he has a big learning curve since there are few similarities to any of the offenses he ran with the Raiders. The biggest similarity is wide receiver Randy Moss, who played with Walter in Oakland in 2005 and 2006.
“Obviously, we had a chance to play together. It was really for one season,’’ said Walter, who was inactive as a rookie. “Just to watch him and how he handles himself. He’s a professional. He’s a very smart guy, so obviously seeing how he may read a route or a defense and having a smart guy like that around helps out a lot.’’
The Patriots believe that Walter’s output in Oakland belies his ability. In 15 games (nine starts), Walter completed 52.3 percent of his passes and threw three touchdowns against 16 interceptions. He was sacked 51 times, including 46 in 2006, when he started eight games.
When asked how much those numbers had to do with playing for the Raiders, Walter said, “Anybody who would do a couple of Google searches and a little research could easily find the answer to that.’’
He pointed out that plenty of players who have left Oakland – from Moss to quarterback Kerry Collins – have found success.

“First Gabriel, then Moss, Jordan, Walter, and now Burgess? I don’t get why the Pats are stocking up on Ex-Raiders.”
Because the Pats know what to do with good (well Gabriel was average) players…the Raiders? Not so much.
I hope Cable turns things around, and Al stays out of his way…I know, “Insanity.”
Still I thought we could have used Ellis and Burgess together in some great Blitz packages.
But alas another productive play walks out the door.

Crabtree apparently operates in a world ruled by Mel Kiper. He wants to be paid based on what was wrongly predicted to occur rather than what actually did. In his mind, he was the first receiver drafted, even if he wasn’t.
Talk about your mock drafts.

Old man better have made a good deal with the Pats and not just GIVEN away Burgess for a lousy 3rd rounder like he just gave away Moss to them for a lousy 4th!
The draft pick compensation should be a a 2nd and 4th or a 3rd and 5th and maybe a player.
I don’t see how the old man couldn’t just trade Burgess and Walter to the Pats for Wilfork and a 3rd Rounder?
Sheesh…..

What the Raiders get in return for Burgess depends on his production in 2009. Lets hope he does well so we get a 2nd rounder outta NE.
August 6th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
My Pops just e-mailed me that little tid-bit but I cant get the link to paste here… Oh-well. It doesn’t say the in so many words but it said this:
………………………………………………
With the Patriots, Burgess will be a 3-4 outside linebacker where he ostensibly will be used as a pass rusher.
The wording of the deal by the Patriots, “draft considerations,” indicates that the better Burgess plays, the better the deal for Oakland. Burgess’ production has declined each year he was with the Raiders, with his sack totals going from 16 to 11 to 8.5 to 3.5 (in 10 games).
August 6th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Burgess sack totals 08 /3.5 07/8 06/11 05/16
Looks like a steady decline to me but , hey its a contract year.
August 6th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
Not a contract year anymore LOL… Unless of coarse the pats sign him to a 1 year.
August 6th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Oh, and I guess were supposed to be satisfied by that Racoon?
We had another probowl player play on a crapy team for the last six years who played for peanuts, during which Davis traded good players all for low draft picks, overpaid average or less than average free agents, fought with coaches, made bad decisions, and micromanaged everything, and results on the field remained the same. Yeah dude, Al Davis is brilliant!
Idiot!
Get out of here with the, “Al Davis can do no wrong and you’re not a Raider fan if you disagree with anything the crazy old man does.”
There was a time when Commitment to Excellence meant something.
Now every time I hear Al Davis say it I’m sad.

August 6th, 2009 at 4:56 pm
This isn’t new.
Raiders should have done a new contract with Lechler and Aso years ago. Instead he lets it run out, and has to pay them record contracts, especially after both stated they’ll gladly move on.
Yeah, Burgess was underpaid. And some of you think that was a good move?
He said ’screw this’ and left.
It’s idiot Al, and his odd way of doing math.
You lost Gruden because Al became a cheapskate. You lost player after player same reason.
And then Al goes and hands out $270 million of contracts last season for FA’s, then gets rid of most of them.
You wonder why everyone laughs at you guys?
How can you not?
August 6th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
Either way you look at the situation it’s still negative.
We lose Burgess for conditional picks. Even if he does well in NE, what’s that say about the Raiders?
Giving away good talent again, for the hope of a better future.
I’m sorry, as a Raider fan, I’m sick of hoping, and would much rather have the feeling, that I KNOW, my team is going to be great, that I KNOW the ownership is going to put a good product on the feild, that I KNOW we have good coaches who can coach the team. I don’t know that with the Raiders, I’m just HOPING someday I will.
Get the picture?

Crabtree holding out has no bearing on DHB being a foolish pick at number seven. It’s not making DHB drop everything in camp. It’s not making Murphy look like the better pick of the two.
