Practice update
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, August 6th, 2009 at 12:13 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Quick update on Thursday morning’s practice:
– The Raiders were light on the offensive line with Robert Gallery (appendix surgery) Paul McQuistan (knee), Khalif Barnes (broken ankle) and Mark Wilson (back spasms) all out.
– Those who suited up but did not practice were quarterback Jeff Garcia (calf), cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (hip flexor) and cornerback Chris Johnson (knee).
Both Garcia and Javon Walker are “close” to being able to practice (Walker would have to be activated from PUP) but coach Tom Cable would not specify a time.
Linebacker Isaiah Ekejuiba was back at practice after missing the previous two sessions with a shoulder problem, and Gerard Warren, who was ill and didn’t practice Wednesday, was back.
– Linebacker Jon Alston, who had been scuffles in the previous two practices, was running second team at strong sidelinebacker while Ricky Brown was working with the first team.
– Darrius Heyward-Bey appears to have to put aside the issue of dropped passes that plagued his early sessions, but the most impressive rookie receiver continues to be fourth-round pick Louis Murphy.
– Linebacker Thomas Howard perfectly read a JaMarcus Russell pass intended for Zack Miller and broke on it for an interception, only to have it bounce off his arms. Hiram Eugene also had a read on a Russell pass to Brandon Myers _ but there’s the thing about Russell _ his arm is so strong he squeezed it past Eugene for a big completion.
– Will have limited practice highlights today because of an obstructed view but some news and notes following transcription and organization of player interviews. There’s also a yearly meeting with the officials for the media discussing points of emphasis and rules changes.
– No Twitter practice updates because the system was apparently crashed by hackers.

ProFootballTalk claims that the Craptree advisors are saying he is willing to sit out the ‘09 season? http://tinyurl.com/mzftj6
LOL!
I hope he does. Maybe then, we can pick him up in the 7th round next year like we did with Bo. But in this guys case, I would love to cut him. lol

and in the end, Murphy, Heyward-Bey, Javon, Johnnie Lee and the rest are of little consequence unless the ball is delivered in a timely fashion.
Super Mario and the Mop Handles, the Raider’s very own quintet have to play their gig in tune and then it’s all on Mr Russell to git ‘er done.

Are we back on? Couldn’t get Twitter at practice this morning, others had same problem. Sorry for the non-coverage.

Justin Fargas
SELECTED BY CINCINNATI , ROUND 3, PICK 33, OVERALL PICK 96
RB | (6-0, 219, 4.38) | USC
By Pro Football Weekly
Notes: Justin’s father, Antonio, is an actor, and played the role of Huggy Bear in the 1970s TV series “Starsky and Hutch.” High school All-American sprinter who ran a 10.47 100-meter dash. Went to Michigan in 1998, and as a true freshman, carried 77 times for 277 yards and one touchdown, caught one pass for five yards and returned 16 kickoffs for 311 yards in 10 games, including one start. Broke his right leg (tibia and fibula) vs. Wisconsin in the 10th game that year. His knee did not heal well, and he had to have three surgeries because of it. The first surgery required the insertion of 12 screws and two titanium rods. After four months, the knee still was not healing properly, so his leg was rebroken, and two metal plates were inserted. The third surgery was done to fix tendons in his big toe that were damaged as a result of the breaks. Saw backup action as a running back and safety at Michigan in 2000 after sitting out the 1999 season to rehab. Requested the move to safety midway through the 2000 season. Had 18 carries for 85 yards, seven kickoff returns for 124 yards and 10 tackles in 2000. Came to USC in ‘01 but had to sit out as a transfer. Underwent a fourth surgery at USC in ‘01 to straighten his right big toe (a residual effect from broken legs). Had a good spring in ‘02 at running back, including two outstanding scrimmages. However, strained his right hamstring and missed the opener vs. Auburn. Served as backup from Games Two through Seven and vs. Notre Dame. Started five games late in the season and finished the year rushing 161-715-7, catching 8-101 and returning kickoffs 7-132. Was named second-team All-Pacific-10 and had an impressive showing at the Senior Bowl, which really improved his stock. Continued to rise at the Scouting Combine, where he ran under 4.4 in the 40, benchpressed 225 pounds 27 times and recorded a broad jump of 11 feet, five inches. Can remind you of Robert Smith with his gait, but is not the same all-everything runner. Situation is similar to that of Jets RB Curtis Martin, who wasn’t highly thought of coming out of Pitt because he was always dinged up. Since then, he has been one of the most durable and productive runners in the NFL after being drafted in the third round, 74th overall, by New England in 1995.
Positives: Outstanding speed. Has a lot of upside, good initial quickness. Well-built with a “V” shape. Showed good strength and agility at the Scouting Combine. Good athletic ability. Has come on and really improved. Runs hard with vision, has some blocking ability and OK hands. Doesn’t have a lot of football mileage. Good kid. Talented.
Negatives: Not durable. Immature and did not have great production. Has had a lot of injuries. Had to have right leg rebroken after four months because it wasn’t healing correctly. Lacks toughness. Runs upright and narrow-based and gets crushed. Thin lower body.
Summary: Fargas showed great speed, strength and agility in the second half of the season and improved his stock more than anyone at the Combine. One team will overlook his durability questions, which must be weighed, and draft him higher than some

4eva,
I like the Ibanez V200S solid top.
Dreadnought body
Solid spruce top
Body, sides, and Neck are all Mahogany
Abalone Rosette
Rosewood bridge and fretboard.
All black, and it’s $199 new.
What do you think.
August 6th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
RRS we only have Kirk at MLB and why not give Brown some looks there just in case something happens to Kirk later, especially with Alstons emergence at Rickys old spot OLB. i feel a whole lot better going into the season knowing R Brown can step in at MLB and not be lost.
i think Alstons play also made Frantz J expandable with Eke also in the mix as a ST ace at the position…
damn we all must be trying to post at the same time or something lol….ok here goes att #6…

I also like Yamaha FG730S solid top.
It’s rosewood sides and back. It’s more that I want to spend.
It’s $299.
Is it better than the Ibaneza?

The Raiders are the most insular and secretive organization in sports.
Personally, I think they are missing the boat with their unwillingness to market and promote themselves
August 6th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
I dont get it either McRaider and Branch was the 1st of his kind,Def.cords. didnt now how 2 stop the guy and thats when you started seeing a lot of zones.I mean 4crying out loud Cliff Branch revolutionized the WR position on offence and because of him defences in the NFL had to add a new philosophy.
Most definitely Cliff Branch and Lester Hayes brought in a new era of fundamental thinking 4 offence and defence and vise-versa
August 6th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
For those who have never been to a practice,..the “obstructed view”,..lol..poor Jerry,..its a tiny little space where they cram all the freeloaders in…its like a little quarantined area…and they are elbow to elbow with their little blackberries or iphones…and they cant see entire practice area,…but they all stand there, patient…because they know after being humiliated in that little space for a few hours, they get fed.

Spend a little bit more than you wanted to, but you will thank me later. This guitar is super easy to play, sounds great, is also an electric guitar with built in EQ/Tuner and killer, easy recording capabilities for when you are ready to record you newest song. I own one of these and I love it. It sounds so clean. When I record acoustic I strictly use this guitar. I own others that are more expensive and supposedly better, but I always end up back with teh Ovation.
August 6th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
well 2 tell you the truth, these sound like new guitars and the last acoustiec I bought was like 20 years ago.The thing is ,I bought an applause,a knock off version of an ovation.Ovations cost around 400.00,maybe get a used 1 for 200.00.The applause cost me 65.00,is extremely easy 2 play and sounds “almost” as good as the ovation, easyier 2 play but didnt sound as good but 300.00 difference in cost.Look at an applause

I can’t spend more than a few hundreds on my 1st guitar.

Do you have a Best Buy in your area? Many Best Buy’s have added a new music instrument department, sort of like a mini Guitar Center. I purchased my black one for $299 and the dude threw in a Body Glove case for free!
Mistabrown is right by the way. The rounded back can make it difficult to play sitting down it is somewhat slick on the rounded back. Personally I just use a strap if I am having a hard time.

August 6th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
73 picks before Huggy,
Willis Mcgahee
SELECTED BY SEATTLE , ROUND 1, PICK 23, OVERALL PICK 23
RB | (6-0, 220, 4.49) | Miami (FL)
By Pro Football Weekly
Notes: (Forty time is from spring 2002.) A third-year sophomore who decided to enter the NFL draft despite tearing multiple ligaments in his left knee Jan. 3, 2003, in the Fiesta Bowl. Redshirted in 2000 and played in eight games in ‘01 as the team’s No. 3 running back behind Clinton Portis and Frank Gore. Some scouts think he declared because he was not the best running back at Miami and knew he wouldn’t win the starting job back. Rushed 67 times for 314 yards and three touchdowns and caught one pass for seven yards. In ‘02, was an All-American and Heisman Trophy finalist after rushing 262-1,686-27 and catching 24-350. Also a finalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and Doak Walker Award.
Positives: Had No. 1-overall talent before injuring knee. His combination of size, speed and strength was rare. Tackling McGahee was like running with the bulls. He could outrun you or run you over. His vision, balance, patience and ability to cut and change directions was pro grade. Ran like a cross between Terrell Davis and Walter Payton. Is a diligent worker who is motivated when he believes he has something to prove. Works hard in the weight room and was ahead of schedule in his rehab according to doctors.
Negatives: Is unlikely to play in 2003, although he says he will, and may never regain the elite speed and cutback ability that made him such a weapon. Lacked mental toughness and was not mature as a college player but could grow up quickly under the circumstances. Doesn’t show any polish as a receiver and his pass-blocking was marginal. May stop driving once he hits the pile after such a serious injury to his lower body, which could also hinder his cutback ability.
Summary: McGahee had rare RB skills prior to blowing out his left knee, and he is working hard and might contribute this season. His place on draft boards will be very subjective. Expect a team who can be patient, and with a deep backfield, to take a chance on him on the first day
Good one Al.

Maybe DHB wasn’t the right pick but its clear that Crabtree would have been worse. The guy has some b@lls to pull this stunt. If I was the 49ers, I’d let him go. I think Crabtree feels like he can get away with this because hes not physically healthy and probably won’t play much anyways so why not?
At this point, in reality, Eugene Monroe would have been the safer pick because him and Henderson would have solidified our line better than Henderson and Barnes/Green but it doesn’t hurt to have a Ferrari I guess.

With guitars and most musical instruments its not how much you paid for it or what brand it is. What should matter most is the tone pleasing to you.
Knowing this I would never buy an instrument online I myself have to see and touch hear the instrumental and get to know it before purchasing it.
The instrument usually chooses you. I have a Gibson acoustic (The one with the dove on the pick guard) I bought 21 years ago I still play it every day.

exactly. now those easy to read hitches and comebacks, quick slants etc become even more dangerous. and we wont care if it rains or snows either and keep mixing it up and stay unpredictable regardless of the weather conditions. let him loose his baby fat while in the meantime we can attack both lines in draft and FA and b4 you know we are back in the mix.
and as for Crabtree, i think he senses he will never ever see a second contract and wants as much as he can with his first and only one.

HOF inducties should not and ARE not just about #’s. It should be about a player/coaches/asst. coaches/owners legacy. Was watching Chronicle Live last night and Greg Papa eluded to the same thing about Tom Flores. Probably never make it, but his legacy says he should. 2 SB’s, first hispanic QB in the AFL and first hispanic Head Coach in NFL.
————————-
Exactly, that’s why Lynn Swann is in the HOF. The acrobatic catches in the Super Bowl. Although Cliff Branch’s number are better.

Most places that sell instruments have room to haggle. They originally offered me the guitar for $389.99. I said I had $300 to spend and after a little back and forth Boom, new Ovation. Part of the deal was I had to buy some strings and a strap then he just threw in a pretty nice Body Glove soft shell case that clinched it for me.
Walked out of there with everything for under $350. Raider O don’t you sell cars? Same concept, much smaller scale…

You fukker. I want that Gibson acoustic, thank you very much. Funny how it isn’t always about how much the guitar cost but you do get what you pay for. Gibson is my favorite brand of guitars by far, at least electric. I have a Fender, Ovation and a Jackson but I dream of a ‘57 Les Paul Re-issue with dual humbuckers. Preferably the Gibson Warren Haynes signature model Les Paul with the built in pre-amp and designed to all of Warren’s specs. I just can’t justify spending the $3,000 to do it.

SNB666 is right, you need to go to s store and sit down with some options. What sounds good to you is what’s most important. Personally the one I bought is the black one I showed you earlier. But I arrived at that conclusion after playing many differen kinds. As it turned out a guy that I was recording with had an Ovation that looked like it had leaves carved out of the body, instead of your normal hole in the center. That’s what lead me to Ovation. Here is a pic of my buddy’s Ovation, which was much more expensive than mine yet it sounds much the same as mine:

Wait … that means that Kwame is an Edsel and Khalif is a huge Chevy Suburban up on blocks, right?
August 6th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Hey Raidertay!
It all fits — Crabtree’s hobby is “fashion” and Singletary’s is “flashin’”!!

Dogg,
Thank you. That’s exactly why I’m asking all these questions. I don’t want some salesman telling anything. I want an assistant to show me, and charge me. lol
August 6th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
all i can say is:
thank god we didn’t take crabtree…
the guy is about to ruin his own life over his own ego…
can you see what the result would be if he injures himself just a little… playing basketball, or getting into a car accident???
can you see anyone taking a chance on him next year after something like that…
and then combine it with his bullschitt this year…
a full year off from football is a big sacrifice…
much too big…
this guy lowers his own value just by breathing…

Craptree is such a Hater….
“We are prepared to do it,” Wells said. “Michael just wants fair-market value. They took him with the 10th pick and you have Darrius Heyward-Bey [the seventh overall pick by the Oakland Raiders] getting $38 million?”
August 6th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
“Darrius Heyward-Bey appears to have to put aside the issue of dropped passes that plagued his early sessions…”
Very promising after only one week of camp. It’s time to make all the naysayers on BSPN and on this blog eat their words.

$3000 – $7000 for a Guitar!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It better do more than just play music for that much money!!!
August 6th, 2009 at 2:10 pm
Even though I didn’t want DHB, I am firmly behind him and hopeful that his speed alone will help open things up — both downfield deep and on underneath routes to Z. Miller and Johnnie Lee … also watch out for Louis Murphy!
August 6th, 2009 at 2:10 pm

August 6th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
You guys are sheep, nothing more.
Let me enlighten you.
First off Crabtree NEVER threatened to sit out.
Someone tossed it out, and his agent flat out denied it. Denied it was ever said, and denied it’s even an option.
Second..Crabtree’s comment about “fashion” is because he has HIS OWN LINE OF CLOTHES. That’s what his “off-field” interests are..his designing his own line of clothes.
You guys should read up a little before you make silly comments that will come back to bite ya..
Hey, you took Bey. Accept it. Was the first of the two dumbest draft choices of ANY TEAM. You got a guy who is a project. Who sucks at catching the ball.
Save the “OMG..CRABTREE IS HOLDING OUT…OMG”
Over a third of the first round picks are still not signed.
Now want to see a sorry silly holdout that bit a player in the rear?
Some moron qb held out for all of training camp, essentially kissing the first year good-bye. Except he got paid MILLIONS to sit and watch…while learning nothing.
Who was that blubber butt??
Anyone??
Crabtree is going to torch Bey, in every stat..just like in college.
BTW..if I was Crabtree? I sure as hell would demand more money than Bey.
And he’ll get it, most likely, because he deserves it.
August 6th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
So what happens if Crabtree and SF can’t agree on a contract? Does he just become a FA again? Do the 9ers get another pick? WTF?
Anyone….Anyone….Bueller….Bueller…..??????
August 6th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
AZ,
The niners lose their pick and Crabtree goes into next year’s draft. It WILL NOT HAPPEN! There is no way that Crabtree’s contract in 2010 would make up for the money he would lose by sitting out the 2009 season…besides, he wouldn’t even be drafted in the top ten next year…
Then again, if his advisors are moron….I hope he tries it, lol.
August 6th, 2009 at 2:29 pm
Ricochet. You make no sense. Crabtree is every bit as unproven as Heyward-Bey. His attitude and work ethic suck, that’s why he was passed up by as many teams as he was.

August 6th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
** Defensive lineman Ryan Boschetti dabbled at defensive end the past few days but returned to nose tackle this morning.
That sort of flexibility will land Boschetti a spot on the 53-man roster. The Raiders always favor multi-taskers on the defensive line because they don’t like to carry many players there.

I think the Raiders are going to see the same depth problems on the D-Line like last year. What the hell is Sands’ problem? He isn’t even making an impact in practice…to the point that there is a noticeable difference when he sits out. Oh well….I hope this Boschetti guy can bring it…..Also, in the future, the Raiders may want to consider more D-Lineman than linebackers given they run a 43

Wow, that Richochet just bounced all over the room didn’t it?! Waa, Waa, Waa, – “my guy got drafted behind your guy, but he’s better than your guy, so he should still get more money than your guy.” It sounds like Richochet and Crabtree are sucking on some of those same sour grapes that Andrew Walters has been feasting on lately!

Crabtree has revealed to his advisor, aka his cousin, that he has no intentions of playing for Coach Singletary after the coach made him cry in front of everyone within earshot (true story). LMAO
Bottom line: Crabtree is a little b1tch and he knows it. I bet he cried when he wasn’t voted prom king in High School. What is he a woman? His own clothing line? Maybe if your name is Serena Williams or Jay Z. Who wants to wear anything that says “Crabtree” on it? B1tches do…

August 6th, 2009 at 4:41 pm
Not that I need my ego satisfied but:
“Darrius Heyward-Bey appears to have to put aside the issue of dropped passes that plagued his early sessions, but the most impressive rookie receiver continues to be fourth-round pick Louis Murphy.”
I still maintain years from now Murphy will be wearing silver and black, while DHB will go along the same path as the Mike Williams, Charles Rogers, And Rickey Dudley’s, Dwayne Jarrett…ect.
Saying I told you so is a little premature, but for the record, when I do tell you all, remember who you heard it from first.
August 6th, 2009 at 5:10 pm
Richochet, I smell what you’re cooking, but I wouldn’t have taken Crabtree at seven, given what I’m hearing out of Murphy in camp.
He was solid at Florida and made big catches in big SEC and BCS games. And now just getting to hear from the guy and reports on his camp performance, you can tell he’s going to be a pro’s pro for a long time.
Ah to think what defensive stud we could have got at seven.
