Fifty Raiders for fifty years

Share

Check out Monte Poole’s assessment of the top 50 Raiders of all time at the following links:

Nos. 26-50

Nos. 1-25

And no, Al Davis isn’t on it because it’s a player’s only list.

A few first impressions:

— Offensive linemen rank 1-2-3 (Jim Otto, Art Shell and Gene Upshaw) and that sounds about right, because great Raiders teams were all about the offensive line. All were Hall of Famers, and although Otto may not have been as accomplished as Shell or Upshaw, he represents Raiders toughness.

— Jim Plunkett is No. 5, Ken Stabler No. 9. Plunkett was a great story and a great leader, but I’m a Stabler man from way back. Built-in bias from seeing so many of his games as a teenager.

— Cliff Branch No. 10, Tim Brown No. 25. Absolutely right. Branch, as Monte notes, somehow got underrated nationally. The classic Raider deep threat was easily the equal or superior of John Stallworth and Lynn Swann.

— Marcus Allen at No. 17? Hardly seems possible, but look at the list, factor in the fact that his Hall of Fame credentials weren’t cemented until he finished up at Kansas City, and maybe it’s about right.

— George Atkinson was a smallish strong safety who backed down to no one and delivered more than he took (ask Russ Francis), but No. 22 seems high.

— Chester McGlockton at No. 49. Realize there were some good L.A. years before he got to Oakland and went in the tank over his contract, but my sentimental pick to squeeze in at the end of the list is Tyrone Wheatley, whose unforgettable touchdown in Kansas City to close out the 1999 season served as a springboard to three division titles.

Any problems, Monte anxiously awaits your e-mails at mpoole@bayareanewsgroup.com

— Players had last night off and had their annual dinner with their respective position group coach. Single practice at 3:30 p.m. I’ll post Twitter updates and a post following practice.

  • T.O. TIME, MOTHER FUGGERS!!! Bills are one of those teams I’m going to follow while the Raiders continue to suck balls the way Oakglenn sucks Al Davis’s balls. How are all of you, anyway?

  • RaiderRon

Yep, the offense will go from historically bad to good in one year. Okaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy

    FloridaPete is a douche

  • DarthPirate

    From David White:
    =========================================
Circus catch of day: JaMarcus pass thru TE Foschi’s hands, right to in-charging Schilens for nab.
    ==================================
    Schilens is a beast.

  • RogRaiderFan

the players say tom cable has been a big difference

  • T.O. will score more touchdowns in the one quarter he’ll play today than DHB will his entire two year career.

  • RogRaiderFan, what do you think the players are going to say, that he sucks?

  • DarthPirate

So is Southwick back, or what? He’s throwing to DHB in a drill by themselves.

    I guess he’s interning?

  • RogRaiderFan

if we vote i bet you will win the award of biggest douche raiderron wait!! just plain ron

I’ll take issue with that one there, lol.

The Mod should change the warning to “posting too pessimistically” for RaiderRon.

    ……

Actually, “posting too quickly” is perfect considering the kool aid drinking nonsense that comes out of this comments section. “slow down”. I can just see the looks on your guys’ faces when you’ve posted an entire denial ridden, “Al is great” diatribe only to hit submit, and be told to “slow down”. Ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!!!

  • Dick Jauron looks pretty junior. Like he lives with his mom. Oakglenn hasn’t been here. Hmmmmm.

  • Is Tennessee using the Oiler look permanently, or just today? It had that oiler emblem next to the players pictures when showing the starters.

  • RogRaiderFan

    john madden loves al davis

  • Kerry Collins is finally looking like Kerry Collins. Threw the ball where there was nothing but Bills.

  • Ron,

I’m here because I enjoy debating with you Talking Monkeys.

  • John Madden hates Al Davis, and just gives him props for giving him his shot. Madden avoids Al.

  • Fake punt for 6! Wow. Nice play.

  • Why would Fisher reveal that play this early on, though?

  • DarthPirate

    Bills just got punked.

  • You guys are being rude. Goodbye.

  • Alright, I’m back. The thing is, DP, why would Fisher reveal that play in the preseason? That was a great play.

  • TO! Already! He’s the best! Fug all haters.

  • RogRaiderFan

al and john are watching the game together now
why would he pick al to introduce him in the hall thats love best friends lol

  • John hates Al, Rog. Face it.

  • Bills’ line is getting no push for Lynch, and Tennessee’s D line isn’t as good without Haynesworth. They’d better just get the ball to TO this year. Edwards just threw the worst past I’ve ever seen. INT.

  • RogRaiderFan

    madden raider stop drinking

  • Norco Bob

Wtf has Collinsworth done to get these high profile jobs?…is he some gay toy for some old geezer that runs the network or something?

  • Norco Bob

I never wanted the Raiders to get rid of Collins. With an O line hes decent.

  • I don’t drink, Rog.

  • Collins is too slow. I think Russell’s better than Collins. I think Garcia’s better than both of them, for the short term.

  • Norco Bob

And another thing, Al Michaels always gets praised as best play by play man,..ya ok,..I dont hear anything special from him,…that do you believe in miracles was lame also,..bfd, hockey,..who cares…hes an ex SF Giants radio hack that pretty much sucks and I told him that at a Tahoe celebrity golf event a few years ago.

  • Norco Bob

Sold my preseason Dallas tix to some Cowboy fans for 125 bucks each. lol…suckers.

  • Garcia should be our starter. You start your best players, period. Too bad that Russell’s a high draft pick. That’s the fault of the idiot who drafted him. I wish Cable had the balls to just start Garcia. That’s what Madden did with Stabler. You know, Madden, Davis’s best friend and puppet.

  • Norco Bob

Im already bored with this preseason game,..off to watch Yankees.

  • Ralph Wilson’s being interviewed in the booth. Says he regrets saving the Raiders, and that he apologizes to Raider fans about Al Davis.

  • DarthPirate

No touchdowns for T.O. in that quarter.

  • DarthPirate

I agree with you on that Norco.

  • Alright, pirate. I was wrong. Guess DHB has a chance, after all. He just needs to hope that teams will give the Raiders the deep pass. Ha.

  • DarthPirate

That interview they gave Rod Woodson was pathetic. They let Ralph Wilson’s old ass up in the studio, they should have brought Rod in too.

  • I remember I was at a game between the Raiders & Patriots. Russ Francis ran a post route, the ball went to another receiver, but after the play George Atkinson forearmed Francis in the nose and broke it. No flag.

  • RaiderNation4Life1

hmmm if i was T.O. i would be mad right now

  • Is my memory clouded or did Greg Biekert deserve to be ranked in there? And while it’s good to see Woodson snuck into #50, why the hell isn’t Lechler in there?

  • NoMoreFargas

RaiderRon I know exactly how you feel, that why In the offseason I will be opptmistic but another azz whopping to the chargers and beat down on national tv and I’ll be right their with you.

  • DarthPirate

This game is setting a record for boredom. Chris Mortenson’s lying son is in the game.

Marcus Allen went to the HOF as a Chief!!
    A Chief!!!!!

You don’t ‘go in’ as anything in football. You’re thinking of baseball, where a player chooses which cap he’ll be wearing. In football, it’s just a bust of the player with a plaque.

  • Dmac20

The raiders are better than the chiefs. last year we beat them pretty handedly in that 1st (courtesy of dmac 164 yrds). And even the year B4 then we beat them in arrowhead and they stole one from us in oakland. And yes we lost to them last year, but they didnt beat us we beat ourselves. The raiders came out a lil too confident that game if you ask me.

  • Dmac20

I believe raiderron’s giving matt cassel a lil too much credit. I find it hard 4 you to fail as a qb when you have the patriots line, with wes welker, and randy moss at wr. So dont put it like its a surprise he had a better season than russel. I guarantee you if you jr had the weapons n protection cassel had last year he would had a good season also. And how did thigpen have a better season than jr when his team finished with a worse record than the raiderz?

Marcus was a great player…who only locked his place in history because of his amazing performance in the Super Bowl (much like Swann). I loved watching the way he ran that football…the way he glided sometimes, especially at the goal line.

But, had he not padded his stats while NOT WINNING ANYTHING IN K.C. (even though the Raiders gave away the division for almost a decade)…Marcus would’ve been just another good/sometimes-great long-term back like Curtis Martin was for the NYJ. And Curtis Martin may or may not be great enough for HOF consideration.

    ================================
Marcus only locked his place in history because of amazing SB performance?
    Huh?
Marcus began his pro career as the NFL Rookie of the Year and ended as the game’s all-time rushing touchdown leader.

Here..read the following exert, then apologize for being un-informed.

At the time of his retirement following the 1997 season, he held the single-season record for most rushing and receiving yards combined (2,314), second in consecutive 100-yard games, and was third in career-combined yardage. During his 11 seasons with the Raiders, was named to the Pro Bowl five times. He added a sixth appearance in 1994, as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

He was the Raiders leading ground gainer seven consecutive years and the Chiefs four consecutive times. He even led the Raiders in receptions with 51 in 1987. Allen’s big-game performance in Super Bowl XVIII when the Raiders defeated the Washington Redskins 38-9 earned the then-second-year player game MVP honors. In that game he rushed for 191 yards and scored two touchdowns, one a Super Bowl record 74-yard gallop.

Allen’s finest season came in 1985, as he led the league with 1,759 rushing yards on 380 carries for a 4.6 yards per carry average and 11 touchdowns. He also caught 67 passes for 555 yards and scored an additional three touchdowns. For his performance he was rewarded with league MVP honors.

In 1995, Marcus made NFL history when he became when he became the first player in league history to rush for over 10,000 yards and catch passes for 5,000 more. As further evidence of his versatility, Allen completed 12 of 27 passes for 282 yards and six touchdowns during his career.

In 15 career playoff games, he carried the ball 267 times for 1,347 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging an impressive 5.0 yards per carry average. He also added 52 catches for 522 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

    A little too confident?

    the Raiders?

The ’08 Raiders, with Russell behind center?

    THAT TEAM??

What are you? A comedian? How could the Raiders ever have gone onto the field “confident”?

KC beat you. Get over it. Save the “we beat ourselves”.
    That’s a copout.
