Gallery returns, Murphy-Mitchell scuffle

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, August 10th, 2009 at 8:13 pm in Oakland Raiders.

News and notes from Monday’s Raiders pracitce session:

– Robert Gallery returned from what what coach Tom Cable originally termed “appendix-itis,” getting some reps in with the first team a few days earlier than expected. He spent the first 12 days of practice on the non-football illness/injury list after an emergency appendectomy two weeks before camp started.

“I didn’t do a whole lot, but you’ve got to start somewhere,” Gallery said. “I know I’m a little rusty with the timing and that stuff but it felt good to be out there.”

Cable ruled Gallery out of the Cowboys game. Gallery is hoping to be ready to face the San Francisco 49ers the following week.

“I would hope the second. It is up to the doctors,” Gallery said. “ They will let me know. I hope to be back to full speed by the end of the week I hope, we will see.”

– On the day the Raiders reported for training camp, safety Mike Mitchell, tongue planted firmly in his cheek, announced he wanted a piece of fellow rookie Louis Murphy. Murphy, Mitchell explained was talking too much about Florida and not giving enough respect to Ohio.

So it was at least mildly interesting when Murphy and Mitchell tangled after a running play, with a shoving match escalating to a fight. Murphy lost his helmet, then unwisely took a swing, hitting Mitchell in the helmet.

Fortunately, no broken bones.

While Raiders coaches all the way back through Jon Gruden frowned on fights between teammates, Cable is more old school. If the fisticuffs aren’t beneficial, he believes they’re a necessary evil.

“Having little quarrels is good, remember that,” Cable said. “This is football and they’re men. If you have a brother you know it’s OK to settle some things once in awhile.”

Mitchell remembered the reporting day call-out and said it hadn’t gone exactly as planned.

“I didn’t want to get him like that,” Mitchell said. “I wanted to get him in the field. I should win in a wrestling match. He is a receiver.”

But seriously, though . . .

“Louis is one of my best friends, actually, in life. We bonded over the summer and he’s definitely one of my guys,” Mitchell said. “It was hot out there today. I don’t know, things happen, but we talked about it afterwards. He’s going through some stuff right now so it’s all good.”

Murphy said, “Me and Mitch, we’re good friends, we quarrel like good friends.”

Some teammates seemed willing to let the rookies mix it up until Murphy lost his helmet, amused at the youthful exhibition.

“When you get older you realize it doesn’t do you any good except get you tired,” Gallery said.

– Darrius Heyward-Bey had a practice that made his drop-filled opening sessions of a week ago seem like a distant memory.

After taking a day off with a sore toe, Heyward-Bey caught everything that came his way, including a difficult over-the-shoulder deep pass along the sideline from Charlie Frye that required a difficult in-flight adjustment.

“I thought maybe this was Darrius’ best day in camp,” Cable said. “Caught the ball well, caught everything, the underneath, the over the top, the big ball on the sideline, the one-handed catch. Those (help) his confidence. We want to keep that coming.”

– Kirk Morrison seemed to take his rose-colored glasses off for a minute when assessing the sudden competition for his job at middle linebacker.

Morrison was with the first team Monday, but has been pushed by Ricky Brown, who is also competing with Jon Alston on the strong side.

“I’m taking every practice like I’m trying to win my job,” Morrison said. “Trying to leave no doubt. I know how this business is. Especially going into a contract year . . . the organization is always trying to replace you no matter what . . . this league is always about, `What have you done for me lately.’ ”

Morrison cited the Baltimore Ravens releasing Trent Dilfer a day he was the starting quarterback in the Super Bowl as evidence, although he could have brought up his own ascension to the middle. That came when the Raiders pushed aside veteran Danny Clark for Morrison, who was a weak side starter as a rookie.

–John Bowie was held out with a groin injury, while Justin Fargas was out with a sore hip. Cornell Green and Cooper Carlisle were rested. Still no Jeff Garcia, out with a calf injury. Asked how he was coming along as he left the field house, Garcia said, “Slower than I thought.”

– We’ll have a better idea Thursday, but Cable said he’s seen enough to lead him to believe the Raiders have shored up their run defense through discipline and better gap control.

“I’ve certainly seen it get better. We’re starting to squeeze things, have people overlapping gaps where we’re supposed to be,” Cable said. But we’ll find out starting Thursday. Dallas is a big, physical team, likes to run in it, too.”

– It was your classic training camp conundrum. JaMarcus Russell, looking for Darren McFadden on a slant, threw the ball directly to Nnamdi Asomugha, who took it the other way for a would-be touchdown.

A poor throw by Russell or a heady move by the NFL’s top cornerback?

“I thought Nnam almost knew what was coming and read it, made a great break on the ball,” Cable said. “It was a front shoulder throw. It was where it was supposed to be. But really, that’s a great play by Nnam.”

It’s a common complaint by receivers, who feel teammates know their routes beforehand.

“That’s camp,” Cable said. “You also know when they make calls what blitz is coming, that sort of thing. That’s just camp. That’s the way it is.”

– Russell had some sequences where he threw some passes in the flat with a nice touch, plays which which could be big with McFadden and Michael Bush in the backfield. He also lofted a 25-plus yard beauty to Johnnie Lee Higgins on the sideline, dropping it in nicely rather than unleashing the full force of his arm.

– Javon Walker continued to work out hard and look very close to returning, although it could be another 10 days to two weeks.

“Obviously, they’re still taking their time with me,” Walker said. “I am going to get my chances in preseason. I’m not sure if it’s this week or the next week or the week after that. I’m just excited to . . . feel like my old self again, where nothing’s really bothering me.”

– Additonal practice highlights are available on my Twitter page.

– The Raiders practice twice today at 8:20 a.m. and 4:20 p.m., and once Wednesday for a walkthrough before the Dallas game.

its so good to hear the positives in DHB. i think this is prob. the most positive training camp ive read about in a while. good things to come! i kno its pre season but lets take it to the cowgirls and show the league we arent foolin around this year!!

DHB needs to have a better rookie season then Chrissy Carter and wipe that smirk off his face. let his play due the talking.

  16. Thec07 Says:

Yeah chris “coked out” carter, and Tom “Gorrilla Face” Jackson. What they tried to do to DHB is horrible.

    Tom Jackson = Grape Ape…

    MIKE MITCHELL > bob sanders….

  18. HayesDaze37 Says:

DHB isn’t just learning on the fly (pun intended) — he’s also giving the Defense a pre-test for Thursday night…the Cowboys’ Roy Williams is as talented a WR as T.O., and he’s a huge target for Romo. Dallas has a few WR’s that will be challenging for the CB’s.

The more DHB reports we hear, the better they get. What a camp.

  19. radraider Says:

5 receptions,84 yrds, & 2 touchdowns. DHB could have that in 2 games. Maybe 1

What does he see that might make Mitchell the real deal???

He has struggled significantly in coverage. He spends more time with Lionel Washington than anybody in that defensive backfield.

Don’t tell me it’s his physical play, we have had plenty of hard hitting/ bad coverage guys on this team before.

    Gibril Wilson
    Marquez Pope
    Marquis Anderson
    Derrick Gibson
    Derrick Hoskins
    Eddie Anderson
    Mike Harden

    anyone?

    MITCHELL!!!!

i cant wait for the SEASON.
the preseason shouldnt matter. but we should win all the games. because we have garcia as a back up even though hes not playing and charlie frye who used to start in this league for the browns playing. so we should win every game. i would think.

No, he didn’t even realize what he posted looked stupid until someone else pointed it out. Kind of the way he dresses in the morning.

  34. priesttj Says:

I feel like doing my first repost on DHB. Man this kid is really coming on like a whirlwind. Talking about his drops is history.

Trying to figure out how to attack the defense with him is the next move.

I read in the last thread where he’s not running all the routes. That’s obviously not accurate, based on this last blog. I said very early that this kid understands the route tree much better than most rookies. About a month ago isaid that I think he is more advanced than Tim Brown was coming in and he’s proving that I was right. Now he’s running routes Tim didn’t run until he was in his 4th season and he hasn’t played a game yet.

When we drafted DHB I was pissed, until I studied him and it’s easy to see why they drafted the kid. The route tree is not the problem it’s getting used to what defenses will do to try to stop him. Learning to read the defense in route and sit or go.

Once he gets that down and he and Russell get on the same page where Rusell feels he knows what DHB will do, it’s over. This kids skill-set is wicked and the talent is phenomenal. It’s starting to look like the Raiders got what they wanted, a lethal weapon.

    It’s on fellas!!

  35. HayesDaze37 Says:

    Ahhh, TeabagRon is back.

So…if not the ROOKIE in the Defensive backfield…who else should get most of the attention from the DB Coach? The vets? Nnamdi?? Duh.

Of course, covering receivers (and areas) is one of his toughest adjustments…he’s never seen anything like it before!! Just like just about every other young DB in the league.

TeabagRon, your lack of a legit complaint is showing…like usual.

  36. raiderhaterhater Says:

You are right Teabagger…He didnt specify..I specifically asked about Tyvon Branch because apparently hes looked very well according to these reports…but apparently Mitchell did some things today to make him think he looked good..ofcourse he may just be comparing him to safeties of recent ( Huff and Schweigert ) where by comparison, anybody might look better…
Either way he says they looked good..of course its not against a real team but its better than him thinking they looked like crap.

And let me enlighten you elsewhere, moron.
Teams NEVER discuss $ unless it’s the #1 pick..EVER. It’s simple, even for you, fool. Each pick waits to see what the others are getting, give or take. Considering the draft hasn’t happened yet, NO ONE HAS ANY IDEA ON HOW MUCH SALARY’S HAVE GONE UP.
You’re honestly this stupid you don’t know this?
    —————————————————-

awww come on missedabrain, we’re having fun at someones expense other than you right now. You should let me run with this for awhile. I mean, this rackoshit guy is a Grade A++ moron. Even more so than you. I mean look at this. He thinks when teams bring in players they don’t discuss money. Here is a sample conversation between a top draft prospect, agent Drew Rosenhaus and rackoshit the new GM:

Rackoshit: come on in and sit down fellas. Would you like some lemonade?? I made it myself.

Rosenhaus: Sure. Look Mr. Rackoshit, your team has been struggling but my client might be the best prospect at his position to come out in years. He is going to make your team better instantaneously. But first, we have to see what kind of cap allotment..

Rackoshit: Brownie?? I made them myself. Look we could talk draft allotment slot, but I would rather show you both the begonias I planted back behind the practice field.

  40. priesttj Says:

Teabag, we’ve had plenty of good hard hitting safeties as well.

    Stacy Toran
    George Atkinson
    Jack tatum
    Ronnie Lott
    Rod Woodson
We may be adding Hiram Eugene to this list (don’t sleep)
    Eric Turner
    Vann McElroy and many others….

Your “brother’s” reports from camp, sound just like Jerry’s. too funny.

  42. Oakglenn Says:

Recent winning programs have that marquee knock your head off, ball hawking safety. The guy we all thought Michael Huff was going to be. Hopefully, Mike Mitchell can be that guy.

  43. raiderhaterhater Says:

much better list of safeties Priest..but lets face it..teams dont fear us over the middle nor do the recievers..we have not punished anybody in quite a few years..too soft and it is finally being addressed..

    Have we cut Sands yet?

  48. raiderhaterhater Says:

yeah it might sound just like Jerry’s but its a second opinion reiterating the first…i had his report before Jerry posted his..

  49. Kush Says:

When it’s all said and done, DHB will make the entire league look like idiots. Including the ones on this blog.

You can teach route running. You can teach proper ball catching techniques. You can’t teach, HEART, DISCIPLINE, RESPECT FOR THE GAME, and HARD WORK.

That’s something the dimwits just don’t get.

  50. Raider O Says:

    Good Evening Gents.

  51. Thec07 Says:

DHB is going to contribute, and contribute often. PERIOD

  52. jhill Says:

    I’ll say it again …

I’m a little concerned about Mitchell’s progress. I see his thirst for a big hit leading to him getting beat over the top. I hope he understands that he needs to let the big hits come to him. He can’t focus so much on the underneath pattern that will get him the big hit, and release his guy over the top.

Conversely, I like what I’m hearing about Branch and his coverage abilities.

  53. priesttj Says:

I know but let’s give these kids a chance and see if they can change that. MM, Branch and Eugene seem to be the kind of players we’ve been looking for, let’s see if they can make their mark. So we’ll see…

  54. raiderhaterhater Says:

Its awesome if Crabs sits out the season and DHB puts up numbers..All those effin niner fans and critics can kiss AD’s ass…The old man has a few trick up his sleeve…maybe the game hasnt passed him by…just yet.

O — Did you get your guitar yet?

  58. Oakglenn Says:

Honestly guys, posting a few hours ago (before I was so rudely interrupted by missedabrain making stupid insinuations), I would not expect a big year out of Heyward-Bey. With all the other weapons on the field, the best thing for DHB would be to make some contributions but open things up for the other playmakers, which in turn will open opportunities for him later in the year or in his 2nd year.

  59. Thec07 Says:

I dont agree with everything MR. Davis Does but the picks of DHB, MM, Murphy makes you wonder, he must still have something in the tank….I dont agree with how he runs the business but man I like these picks…

  60. Raider O Says:

    Hayes,

    Not yet, still shopping! Why?

  61. Oakglenn Says:

Jhill, other than QB, SS might be the toughest position to learn in the NFL. Again, I would have a hard time believing he is going to make a big contribution his lst year. I think they are going to ease him in. They almost have to.

  62. raiderhaterhater Says:

Yeah im not a huge Eugene fan..hes ok- has his moments..but not sold on his coverage skills. I am pulling for Tyvon and Mitchell..havent seen Tyvon yet but im anxious to see what he can do… Hes supposed to be a hitter…and according to these reports hes good in coverage…enough of the huff experiment…

  63. jhill Says:

    I don’t know Oak!

    I disagree!

DHB is running all the routes, has the advertised speed, so he should be starting. If he starts, I think he should get 5 or 6 balls thrown his way each game. At least! With all the weapons we have, as you say, there is no way DC will be able to keep that S back all game. JRuss needs to recognize single coverage and get him the ball.

  64. priesttj Says:

Jhiill he has to learn and the only way to learn is get beat. Unfortunately that’s the way it is. The good thing about Mitchell is his athleticism, he’s not as stiff in his hips as most big hitters are. He can flat out run and chase. Has makeup speed and is a ball hawk. This kid has the tools to be great and now he has to learn, his best asset is he is not timid. Can we say HUFF!! he is going to make mistakes………period will he get in the film room and learn from them? that’s the difference.

It’s obvious that DHB is doing lot’s of film work you don’t improve at the rate that he is improving unless you are in the film room constantly. And an extremely hard worker.

  65. jhill Says:

I do agree that Mitchell will be worked in slowly. He, unlike DHB, is not running with the first team.

  66. Thec07 Says:

I would prefer to see balace on offense. Not one “star” but utilize everyone, and the stats are balanced. Makes it harder for defenses to account for everyone. This is going to be the test for most DCO’s who do we key in on ZMILLER, MBUSH, DMAC, DHB, JLH, MURPHY, FARGAS, *WALKER. some of these guys will see
1 on 1. This offense can and should cause several matchup problems.

  67. Oakglenn Says:

What’s funny Thec is (an all the Al haters are REALLY going to hate this) I think Davis has taken MORE control of the team in the last three years. Look at the pix over the last three years: Jamarcus, Mario, JLH, Michael Bush, Bowie, Richardson, Dmac, Branch, Shields, Trev Scott, Shilens, Along with the ones you name. These are CLASSIC Davis choices.

    ———————————————-

I COMPLETELY AGREE! I just think there are probably some fans here who are expecting DHB to have 99 receptions, 1400 yrds and 22 TD’s his lst year. I would expect 40 receptions, 750 yards, and 6 scores. Because I think those numbers would open things up for a LOT of other playmakers on O.

  69. priesttj Says:

Some players demand that they be on the field with their abilities, like Marcus Allen, Bo, Wiz, Matt Millen and Gene Upshaw.

We have had players force the coaches to play them Greg Beikert for instance. Charles Woodson forced the coaches to play him. DHB could be that type.

  70. Einstein Says:

Wow, another infamous meltdown by Oakglenn. You have some issues bro.

  71. Norco Bob Says:

TJ,..call Gary in the morning about 9:30, P-Con said thats the best time,..and you may speak about the Raiders…in case you dont know, you are no longer banned. Gary said so.

  72. jhill Says:

Yup, I agree with you on DHB, Priest.

He is OBVIOUSLY working on everything. It’s always being reported that he’s the last one to leave the locker room, stays late working with the juggs machine. You gotta love that!

  73. Thec07 Says:

Like I said dont agree with how the franchise is ran..
In getting MIKE MITCHELL, We beat the bears to the punch, this is well documented. MITCHELL even said in a interview that chicago said stay by the phone we are about to pick you i think 49th overall. Mr. Davis swoops in and picks him. Makes you wonder, why then did we get so much heat. When you think of chicago you think of butkus, singletary, big hitters, that put the fear in you. If Mr. Davis is responsible i am on record in saying he i on point with his picks….

  74. jhill Says:

    Ok, Oak!

Those would be good #s for him, and are about what I was thinking. Maybe a few more TDs.

  75. Oakglenn Says:

I never have melted down in my life einstein. where did I melt down??

  76. raiderhaterhater Says:

    Oak-
the Raiders may be a run first team and i agree he may not put up crazy numbers but make no mistake about it, the Raiders will take their shots downfield…opening things up for the running game and when the defense puts eight in the box then lookout..we go over the top again.

  77. Oakglenn Says:

Jhill, TD’s are the issue with this team. If we could score TD’s not FG’s our defense could take more chances.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Of course, I would prefer to see that vs 1 guy getting all the touches. JRUSS mixs it up nice, makes it tougher on the defense.

  82. priesttj Says:

Oak. those stats are what I’m starting to expect from DHB. But at the rate this guy is improving it’s starting to look like he can do what ever he wishes, the sky is the limit. Who knows?? the things he’s doing in practice are almost unheard of..

He’s is quite frankly writing his own book of what to expect. Tim Brown, Jerry Rice never did this stuff in their first ever training camp.

    Who knows?!?

  83. jhill Says:

Some of that has to do with his recent play in practice. Mitchell is struggling in pass coverage, something secondary coach Lionel Washington gets on him about every chance he gets.

Mitchell is just as hard on himself for recent goal-line struggles, the kind that are hard to notice in a crowded box from where reporters are allowed to sit.

“Being physical is something I like to do. I’m disappointed in the way I’ve been, though. We’ve had some live goal line periods where I haven’t made the tackle and they’ve gotten in. In that sense I’ve been kind of disappointed, but I’m doing everything I can to get that corrected and take the right angles, and that means you’ve got to hit Mike Bush low. He’s a big boy. But Thursday I’ll be ready and we’ll see what happens.”

  84. Thec07 Says:

    2. Mitchell giving backup quarterback Bruce Gradkowski a two-handed shove in the back as Gradkowski scrambled out of bounds. Gradkowski helmet-budded the rookie, and his point is valid: relax.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
We need to get MITCHELL infront of the opposition. Sounds like he is having hitters withdrawl. Cable may be next.

  85. jhill Says:

There you go again with this mix him in slowly business, Oak! I thought you just said that you agree he should start? And when he’s not doubled, you throw him the pelota!

All of that should start this Thursday!

  86. Oakglenn Says:

It’s funny priest but I look at DHB the way I look at bringing in a rookie point guard to a BBall team or like the way the St. Louis Cardinals got Matt Holliday. They are not there to carry the team, they are there to get others involved, or in Hollidays case, make them pitch to Pujols at number four. In other words, make every one around him better. That, would be a nice rookie contribution for him.

  87. jhill Says:

I understand where you are going with the Tim Brown and Jerry Rice comparisons, but the guy has a LONG way to go before he should be mentioned in the same breath as those guys.

  88. Oakglenn Says:

No Jhill, I think you are right. Start him, have some plays called for him, but NO WAY is he “the Man”. If he can contribute, get off the line and pull defenders, it is going to open a LOT of things up. That’s how I would use him, at least initially.

  89. priesttj Says:

Thec07, that’s funny as hell. hahaha!! but it’s obviously true Mitchell is a real meathead. That kid is crazy. The sooner they get him outta camp the better, before he kills somebody.

  91. jhill Says:

Let’s get on with this, man!

Bush and McFadden on the field on the shotgun set with DHB and Chaz on the field. Split Miller wide, or release McFadden to the slot.

I want to see A LOT of that set. You can run and pass out of that formation and you have your best players on the field. Save the I formation for when we have a nice lead and in the 4th qtr.

I also want to see a lot of the 2 TE sets.

BHP, ROFLMFAO…….. I saw his raiders rookie interview. He is a very well spoken kid, very engaging.
You would never suspect him of being a meathead….
I would be surprised if he doesnt knock someone out on thursday, he clearly has issues… Good ones…

  93. jhill Says:

We’re kinda saying the same thing Oak, but he would become the man as soon as he is single covered. Why not, if he is open? And if he can beat Nnamdi in practice now, he will be open in games.

  98. KoolKell Says:

I’ve heard the same stuff for years, and years, haven’t seen it since Cliff Branch though. So excuse me, if I’m a little skeptical.

  99. HayesDaze37 Says:

O — Didn’t want to jump in, while you were getting plenty of good advice so far on guitars…it’s hard to go wrong with the name-brands you’re looking at, even their entry-level models.

But, there are a few more options you may consider…there are plenty of great guitars, from beginner-to-collector quality, waiting to be adopted at local pawn shops. Some pawn shops have INCREDIBLE guitar collections at great prices.

Entry-level guitars abound, because lots of people don’t ever play them, after they find out it’s not such an easy instrument. Your $300-ish budget will go far at a pawn shop with a decent guitar collection.

But, what I wanted to tell you was what I found in my just-arrived Sam Ash Music catalog…

I know you were talking about accoustic and accoustic/electrics…and there’s a very interesting deal right now for a Fender Stratacoustic Electric. It’s not a standard accoustic body, but it’s not designed for that. Sam Ash has it on sale for only $129.

That’s a great price for a name-brand entry-level guitar. It doesn’t sound as “full” as some of those others when not plugged-in, but it does when it’s on. Add a $25 used practice amp you can find on craigslist, and you’re in business for when you can turn it up a little. I’ve heard this guitar played at a showcase, paired with a accoustic/electric bass, and they sounded great.

Of course, just like everything else, people are going to say “Don’t buy that, get XXX…” They’re all right, and all wrong. Buy what YOU think SOUNDS GOOD to you now…but also what you think you may be happy with AFTER you learn to play.

That’s hard to do with entry-levels, and if you aren’t sure just how much you’re going to enjoy playing…spend the smallest amount of money you can on a decent rig, and be happy with it. If you become a real player…then swapping out your entry-level stuff for more intermediate equipment will be easily justified.

As far as being happy with the product…even for the lowest-priced product, Fender, Ibanez, Yamaha, et al all want your business, and they take care of their customers. They know most new players get “branded” as soon as they find their first instrument they love, and you’ll probably be a buyer of their products for life.

If you can get that Ovation CC24S for anywhere near $300, that’s a great buy on a great guitar at the price-point. Sam Ash says they only have 20 of those Fender Stratacoustics per store…and they have some So-Cal stores, but I don’t know how near to you they are.

No matter what you decide on…make sure you deal for a good strap, and a decent gig bag or case. These are things you can negotiate for in-person, but not when shopping online. A few lessons can be negotiated, too.

Check out samashmusic. com and musiciansfriend. com and compare some prices. (There are big fans of both, and haters of both).

I’ve shopped both online numerous times, with excellent results, and never had a shipping hassle from either company. But, the best relationship is the one I have with my local music store…where even they sometimes are able to match the big boys’ prices.

Don’t forget craigslist (buyer beware)! No matter where you buy, don’t be afraid of spending $300 for a decent rig that looks and sounds good to you. Spend even less, and worry even less that you made a mistake.

I think anybody who can find out they can/can’t play an instrument for anywhere near $200-300 or less, hasn’t made a mistake at all — they’ve spread their horizons.

    Good luck!

  100. Oakglenn Says:

I’m kinda with KK on this. There were other players that I would have liked to have drafted, so I am a little skeptical myself, especially of the raves in practice. It will be nice to see them against other rookie players and assorted vets, at least we can get a tiny bit more evaluation of them at that point. The Cowgirls starting corners, Newman and Jenkins aren’t going to play so that might be something to consider.

Jhill, my point is this, we need to forget everything that’s EVER been said about this kid. And let him write his own book because that’s what he’s doing.

I saw both Jerry and Tim as rookies and Marcus Allen. DHB’s camp so far is reminiscent of Marcus Allen when he shutup all doubters and killed the 49ers on opening day. It took Jerry and Tim until at least their second seasons to show what this kid is showing.

I would bet dollars to doughnuts even the coaches are very surprised.

  103. priesttj Says:

  125. Oakglenn Says:

The two most interesting people in all of this might be Hackett and Tollner. Tollner has done a pretty good job his whole career including working with Hall of Famers Jim Kelly and Andre Reed and Thurman Thomas. Hackett did a very solid job as AS last year.

  126. priesttj Says:

In their first training camp……………duh! they’ve had the luxury of having played their entire careers. I was comparing TRAINING CAMPS………but i get it, it’s tough to digest. So be it.

  127. The NEWS Says:

Can’t wait to see these fellas play on Thursday. Just remember folks….whatever happens on Thur….whether the outcome is real good, real bad, or somewhere in betweem….it’s ONLY PRESEASON. Remember when Art Shell’s team had a good preseason? Yeah…so just calm down.

  128. jhill Says:

Have you really not been keeping up with the reports KK?

DHB gets open regularly……….. and on these defensive backs, that’s no easy task. When defensive coordinator John Marshall admits that in his 30 years of coaching, “I’d have to say this is the fastest group of corners and coverage people that I have had,” that’s saying something–……..and DHB is beating all of them….. Fred Biletnikoff, Cliff Branch, and Jerry Rice all had trouble catching the ball early in their careers and if DHB can be half as good as that trio with his hands, he’s worthy of a first-round selection…….. He’s beaten everyone from Nnamdi Asomugha …..

That’s just one piece from a camp observer.

  129. Raider O Says:

    BHP,

They showed a clip of him in practice on NFLN. He expolede of the line!! Exploded!!!!! Not even Randy did what I saw. Amazing!

  130. HayesDaze37 Says:

Glad to help, O — Those pawn shops will probably have what you need…even a better guitar than you thought you could afford.

Guitar Center and Sam Ash are about the same…kinda like Chevy and GMC (but owned by different parent cos.)..they offer mostly the same gear, and their prices are pretty close. They’ll price-match, and they have selections that’ll make you drool. You’re used to dealing with college kids and the like already, so you’ll deal fine with their sale people.

And…if you spend $300 on a beautiful guitar, and never learn to play it…it’s a piece of art itself…and it’ll look better in your home than most $300 pieces of art you’ll find. Playing it? That’s magic.

KK — You’re kidding me, right? Nobody’s allowed to acknowledge that (reports of) DHB doing better than expected (by some) is exciting?

It’s amazingly awesome news for any fan to hear…that his team’s #1 pick is making strides in his first camp…going against some of the league’s best pass-defenders. That’s amazingly awesome news for fans to hear (or see!!).

Now…I don’t see anybody comparing DHB to those HOF’ers you mention, except to compare their rookie progress. Of course, nobody knows if DHB’s going to be great. But, even the haters are realizing this guy just might have the goods. One thing I’m fairly certain of…if he’s healthy at the end of camp, DHB will be as ready as any WR picked in this year’s draft.

Cheer up, KK! It’s OK every now and then!!

  144. jhill Says:

Don’t believe him? Just ask All Pro corner Nnamdi Asomugha.

“Anytime he comes off the ball if you’re pressing him — first of all, he’s not a guy you want to press all the time because of his speed — but when you’re pressing him, anytime he comes off the ball, he comes off confident, like, “I know that I can run by you.” You can tell that from him so that can put fear in a corner. I think that’s going to help him in the long run…in the short run, actually. It’s going to help him soon.”

Kell you’re grasping for straws now. You asked for a post that said DHB was making plays on Nnamdi. You’re showed one from a coach and now you’re basically saying that the coaches are lying to make DHB look good.

I understand that he hasn’t played a game yet. I think it’s funny though that when he was DROPPING PASSES in camp, everyone said, “Oh see he’s a bust, he can’t catch”.

Now that he’s catching everything in sight in this SAME CAMP, I’m hearing, “Oh well it’s just camp. You can’t go off of that.”

So once again…Which one is it?? Training camp is only a valid assessment when DHB’s dropping passes, but it doesn’t mean anything when he’s catching them, right? Come on people.

Teabag, we’ve had plenty of good hard hitting safeties as well.

    Stacy Toran
    George Atkinson
    Jack tatum
    Ronnie Lott
    Rod Woodson
We may be adding Hiram Eugene to this list (don’t sleep)
    Eric Turner
    Vann McElroy and many others….
    ——————————————–

Rod Woodson wasnt a blow up hitter… Neither was Eric Turner..

Ronnie Lott was a stop gap and so was Rod Woodson…And Eric Turner for that matter (God bless his soul)

Toran played what 2 season before his tragic death… was good, not really a knock out hitter… but I digress

For the rest of those guys… I really dont put much stock into the pre 80’s guys. It just reminds me that AL is chasing the glory days and his recipe has failed time and time again.

And for the guy who mentioned that on my list Eddie Anderson was the only big hitter…

Marquis Anderson wasnt a big hitter?? lol – I guess you never seen the play where he blew up a Lorenzo Neal lead block and laid him on his back.. Sorry, hitting was the ONLY thing Anderson could do..

Pope WAS in fact a big hitter.. He just didnt fly around and hit people like he did in St Louis or San Fran.

  160. priesttj Says:

When we drafted Marcus Allen they said it was an unnecessary reach. That he wul’ve lasted later in the 1st rnd. He was tooo slow couldn’t break tackles and fumbled like crazy.

They said Al Davis was losing it, ever heard that one? when Marcus heard it it pissed him off. He came to camp wanting to show them what he could do. We had a great HB named Kenny King, by the second preaseason game Marcus was starting and the rest is history.

When we drafted Marcus Allen they said it was an unnecessary reach. That he wul’ve lasted later in the 1st rnd. He was tooo slow couldn’t break tackles and fumbled like crazy.

That’s why the draft is really beginning to make me sick. You have all these clowns on TV making all these bold statements, knowing that they won’t have to own up to any of it. Add a little hate from folks like Tom Jackson, and you have some real BS.

Shoot, just the other day I heard a clown from a non-sports radio show commenting on something he had no business talking about. He said that there was “controversy” in Raiders camp over the walk through practices at the beginning of camp and that players were questioning it and saying “what’s going on here?”. To further prove how unqualified he was, he talked about Walter going to the Patriots but he didn’t say it was Walter. He said, and I quote, “I don’t know his name…Russell? I don’t know.” I wanted to rip him a new one but I knew I wouldn’t get on the air.

    ———————————————-

#1 – I saw Eric Turner play in college, in Cleveland andin Oakland.. Was not a vicious hitter.. a GOOD hitter, was a coverage first safety.. Eric Turner played the ball before the man.

Lol.. are you also the authority on who has seen Stacy Toran play and who hasn’t?? I know who Stacy Toran is. I have been a Raider fan plenty long enough, Thanks.

ok…. Nnamdi was NOT anywhere near a vicious hitter… Nnamdi had one good hit his whole career on Derrick Blaylock vs the Chiefs. he only blew him up because the ball was hanging on a pass to the flat and my 6 year old son (Hell, even my 5 year old and he is FRAIL) could have blown Blaylock up. One hit DOES not make you a great hitter. If it did, Stu would be All Pro when he lit up Tony Gonzalez.

  175. priesttj Says:

When I say vicious hitter I mean he’d hit you just as soon as look at ya’. As I said there are Hitters and there are hitters, Nnamdi coming in would lay you out if he got the chance and still will. Rod Woodson early in his career was a very physical corner. Stacy Toran was also one of better hitting safeties we’ve had. Nnamdi has lost weight to play the corner but when he came in he was 6′ 3″ 220 and would hit. He now plays at 210 at best. Nnamdi would’ve been one of the best safeties to ever play had he stayed there.

Stacy was lighting people up in practice and made a name for himself. He had one memorable hit because he played sparingly as a safety but I see Hiram Eugene the same as I saw Nnamdi. Hiram is 6′ 3″ about 220 right now. I met Hiram when he was a raw rookie and tld him to just play full speed all the time and he’ll have a chance to make the team. He’s still here and he’s probably the most underrated player on the roster. very versatile could easily switch to corner and be very good. He played corner in college. One player a veteran said he had the smoothest backpedal and was extemely athletic. He wanted to play corner and I told do whatever they ask and do it as well as you can and you’ll stick, he’s still here.

I have been having those same type of conversations with a DE can’t name him he was a rookie FA and he’s in his second year. He may get cut I’m not sure but I tell him to liten to coach Board because dwaine Board was a lot like him when he was a young player. And he’ll get a fair shot. So we’ll see…

As far as Eric Turner I saw him almost kill Mervyn Fernandez when he was with Cleveland. he hit him in the endzone but Mervyn held on for a TD. But after that Mervyn was never the same.

  176. priesttj Says:

I meant to say Nnamdi had one memorable hit because he played sparingly as a safety. If Nnamdi had stayed there wouldn’t be looking for a safety now.

  177. Dmac20 Says:

I kinda wish the raiders would have signed brian dawkins as a free agent this year instaed of the broncos. He could have taught huff and the rest of those younger safeties how to play the position like a pro. Man can you imagine tha fire and energy he’d bring to this team, especially being a team on the rise. I would have loved to see bd coming out of the tunnel in that silver and black bouncing and jumping around like he does. Not even on the field and just watching him gets me hyped.lol

  178. NoMoreFargas Says:

What’s up, yeah before we got Mitchell I wanted Dawkins too, I think Huff is a lost cause at FS and should just move him to cb .

we still have depth issues at DT… and a serious talent / desire issue… (ya hear me, turdell???)

rotating defensive ends into the defensive tackle slots is not a good answer… and that’s been something we’ve been doing for several years now…

we need to keep an eye out for a DT being released by another club… not a starter, just a decent serviceable DT that can spell our starters on a long series…

According to league policy, only certain types of players are allowed to sign to the practice squad. Players cannot have played more than nine regular season games or been on the active roster for an entire year, nor can players be allowed to spend more than two seasons on the same team’s squad unless that team’s active roster never dips below 53 players.

Rookies can be productive in Year 1. They can be difference makers. Thats sort of what you expect taking a guy in the Top 10.

The guys who produce in OTA’s, camp & preseason should start on Week 1. not coaches favorites, not fan favorites, not guys with more or less experience. this team needs talent on the football field, no matter how proven, polished, young, old or fat they are!

    Q: What stood out?

A: I think obviously, you gentlemen and ladies know, that we need to improve the run game. That has everything to do with technique, and it has a whole lot to do with attitude and tackling. Those are the areas, disengaging blockers, fundamentals. better fundamentals.

Q: So the talent is here?

Will DHB start? I still think that remains to be seen. As long as they start him because they believe he will be able to move the ball better than the other guys and grow into the role quickly.

They should not play him as some macho way to justify to the critics that they selected him. Screw the media and do what is right for the team. Whether that’s playing him and starting him or having him platoon.

I would say trade Garcia, but I don’t think anyone would give us anything YET (hell, we can’t even get the guy to practice). One starting linebacker was overheard complaining about yet another Kelly jump. Defensive line coach Dwaine Board yelled with a tint of contempt, “Watch the ball, please.”

Cable said he’s the new backup left tackle with Khalif Barnes out, but Seth Wand has been taking every snap at that position.

I saw DHB in college, a couple of times. Bear in mind, their offense wasn’t that sophisticated and they really didn’t use him as a weapon nearly as often as they should have. In terms of the overall involvement with the passing game and actual game-speed work (over the course of an entire game and season), Louis Murphy brings more to the table right now than DHB. That may change by mid-season, but right now, I would feel more comfortable with Murphy and Chaz as my starters.

Cable is latest coach to attempt to lift dark cloud hovering over Raiders
Bucky Brooks By Bucky Brooks | NFL.com
    Analyst
    Paul Sakuma / Associated Press
Tom Cable has brought an unorthodox approach to Raiders training camp.

OAKLAND, Calif. — The task before Tom Cable is magnanimous as he attempts to transform a franchise that has fallen on hard times since Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003.

The Raiders have endured six straight seasons with 11 or more losses, and their 31-68 record during that period ranks as the league’s second-worst mark. With success eluding the team at seemingly every turn, Cable has gone back to basics to reverse the fortunes of franchise.

Every new coach preaches of a return to the fundamentals, but Cable has taken it a step further in his first training camp as the head coach by using a “learning intensive approach.” The 44-year-old head coach conducted four days of walkthrough-like practices designed to teach his players how to properly execute their assignments. By eschewing contact or competitiveness during the first days of camp, Cable is teaching his team to win by focusing on the details that are often overlooked when the intensity of camp revs up.

While Cable’s unorthodox method is sensible in many ways, it hasn’t stopped legions of team observers from criticizing the new head coach’s attempt to revive the dormant franchise. However, those cynics may soon eat their words as the Raiders have been noticeably shaper in the execution of their offensive and defensive schemes during the early part of camp. Moreover, the team’s confidence is brimming after riding the momentum of a two-game winning streak to close the season.

The downtrodden Raiders have gone through four head coaches and numerous quick-fix plans since their last shot at glory, but Tom Cable’s back-to-basics approach may finally lift the dark cloud that has been hovering over the franchise.
    Camp observations

» JaMarcus Russell, the Raiders’ much-maligned franchise quarterback, enters the season squarely in the crosshairs after reports surfaced questioning his work ethic and leadership skills. However, the endless speculation hasn’t appeared to rattle the third-year pro’s confidence as he looked poised leading the team during drills. Russell’s stellar arm strength is apparent on his deep throws and he has shown better touch on his intermediate tosses. While he still appears hesitant at times in the pocket, Russell’s grasp of the offense has clearly improved as he looks more comfortable hitting the second and third options in his progressions. With former Pro Bowler Jeff Garcia lobbying for a shot at the starting job, Russell’s on-field improvement comes at just the right time.
    Fantasy take
While Darren McFadden has the talent that makes him irresistible, Michael Fabiano wonders if the second-year running back can be a reliable fantasy starter this season. More …

    » Fantasy football draft kit

» The Raiders could field the league’s top rushing attack in 2009. The terrific trio of Darren McFadden, Justin Fargas and Michael Bush gives the team the versatility to attack defenses with a varied attack on the ground. McFadden acts as the team’s home-run hitter, and is most effective on perimeter runs designed to take advantage of his exceptional speed and quickness. Fargas gives the team a hard-nosed inside runner with sneaky power and explosiveness. Though he doesn’t get the acclaim of his peers, he could emerge as a 1,000-yard rusher in the team’s power-based scheme. In Bush, the team has a dynamic runner with the skills to thrive as an inside or outside runner. The third-year pro flashed his immense talent during the season finale against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (27 carries for 177 yards with two touchdowns), and he continues to impress with his work at camp. With new fullback Lorenzo Neal specializing in opening huge holes, the pieces are in place for the Raiders to excel as a smash-mouth rushing attack.

» John Marshall’s version on the Raiders’ defense is sure to look vastly different than the unit directed by Rob Ryan. Whereas Ryan attempted to defend opponents using a conventional defense that plays extensive man-to-man with selective blitzes, Marshall is promising to rev up the team’s pressure package this season. In his previous stint as the Seattle Seahawks’ defensive coordinator, the 30-year NFL coaching veteran’s high pressure scheme resulted in a league-leading 50 sacks in 2005 while also allowing only one 100-yard rusher on the way to a Super Bowl appearance. In Oakland, he has the pieces available to replicate those accomplishments. With Nnamdi Asomugha capable of locking down one side of the field, Marshall is free to turn loose five or six rushers on the quarterback to disrupt the timing of the passing game. Veteran Greg Ellis joins emerging Trevor Scott to give the team a set of bookend pass rushers, and Thomas Howard’s speed makes him a viable weapon as a rusher. Though the defense may need some time to adjust to Marshall’s disciplined approach, the unit has the personnel to blossom in the scheme.

    Paul Sakuma / Associated Press
As the top receiver selected in April’s draft, Darrius Heyward-Bey will be under intense pressure to produce.
    Rookie report

Darrius Heyward-Bey heads into his rookie season under intense scrutiny from observers after being the first receiver taken in the draft. The former Maryland star has struggled holding onto the ball during the first week of camp, but has displayed the explosive speed and athleticism that made him an intriguing first-round prospect on many boards. While he may never live up to the expectation that comes along with being the top player selected at his position, he could eventually emerge as a big-play weapon in an offense that is designed to throw the ball down the field.
    Surprise, surprise

The Raiders have a budding star receiver in Chaz Schilens. The second-year pro from San Diego State started six games for the team a season ago, and recorded 15 receptions for 226 yards (15.1 avg.). While those numbers aren’t eye-popping, his outstanding size (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) and explosive athleticism makes him a difficult matchup on the outside. With the Raiders’ potent rushing attack dictating eight-man fronts with one-on-one on the outside, Schilens could easily post big numbers as the team’s No. 1 receiver.
    Lasting image

The memorable image from the day is watching the Raiders taking the field as part of the team’s annual Raider Nation celebration at Oakland-Alameda County Stadium. In spite of the team’s abysmal record over the past six seasons, the rabid Raiders fans remain staunchly behind their team and the Black Hole is buzzing about the team’s prospects in 2009.
    Extra points

» Zach Miller is poised to have a big year as the team’s top option in the passing game. The third-year pro led the Raiders in receptions a season ago, and is set to duplicate the feat as the designated playmaker in their aerial attack. As a precise route runner with outstanding hands, Miller terrorizes opponents over the middle of the field. With the team sure to incorporate more play-action passes to complement the running game, he should continue to sport a robust yards-per-catch average.

» In Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard, the team has a pair of Pro Bowl-caliber linebackers set to anchor a rejuvenated defense. Morrison, who perennially ranks as one of the league’s leading tacklers, acts as the brains of the defense from his middle linebacker spot while Howard fills in as the designated playmaker from the weak side. Collectively, they wreak havoc on opponents when allowed to roam freely on the second level. With Marshall set to unleash a high pressure scheme in 2009, Morrison and Howard could emerge as household names by season’s end.

» Don’t be surprised if the Raiders’ dynamic return game leads to a couple of wins in 2009. Returners Johnnie Lee Higgins and Justin Miller combined for five return touchdowns last season, and could help the team win the coveted field position battle by producing a few game-changing plays in the kicking game. Given the likelihood of the Raiders playing in a lot of close games behind their rushing attack, the ability to score points on special teams could be the deciding factor in those contests.

    Texas Feminine Protection

In Texas, a woman was called in front of a grand jury for possible manslaughter charges after she shot a mugger in the back six times as he was running away with her purse. He had grabbed her purse and ran. She had her hand on her gun inside the purse and when he ran with the purse she was left holding just the gun.

When asked by the grand jury why she shot him six times, in the back as he was running, under oath she replied “Because when I pulled the trigger the 7th time, it only went click.”

She was acquitted of all charges because that’s the way it is in Texas and the way it should be everywhere.

Some cry foul over Eagles 81-man roster

    Posted by Mike Florio (PFT)

The news that the Eagles signed 31-year-old quarterback Matt Nagy on Monday after backup Kevin Kolb suffered a knee injury has caused grumbling in some league circles.

The fact that Nagy has been working with the team as a coaching intern means that he’s far more prepared to make a contribution than any other potential quarterback candidate would be.

“Talk about roster stashing,” one league source said. “They have a guy who has been attending meetings and who knows what else?”

Here’s an example of “what else.” Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News points out that Nagy had been throwing passes to running back Brian Westbrook as Westbrook worked out on his own while recovering from ankle surgery.

“I bet you he was throwing balls in drills,” the source opined. “They’d better hope the league doesn’t ask for tapes.”

Meanwhile, Nagy is on a no-lose situation. Once Kolb is healthy and Nagy is released, he’ll go back to being a “coaching intern.” And he’ll continue to be available in the event another quarterback gets hurt.

And he’ll continue to attend meetings and periodically throw passes and otherwise be available to step in and help out if/when he’s ever needed.

Meanwhile, Vikings coach Brad Childress might suddenly be considering the possibility of adding a certain 39-year-old former quarterback as a “coaching intern.”

I hope Danny Southwick doesn’t get noticed!

    Chiefs bench Dwayne Bowe

    Posted by Mike Florio (PFT)

One of the few bright spots on the 2008 Chiefs roster was receiver Dwayne Bowe.

Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star reports that Bowe has been benched.

    At least for now.

Teicher explains in a video entry that coach Todd Haley demoted Bowe on Monday. Haley thereafter indicated that he’s not happy with Bowe’s overall integration into the “program.”

It shows, as Teicher points out, that Haley is willing to call guys out in order to ensure that players realize that they need to do things the way Haley wants them to do things.

Teicher says he’s confident that Bowe will figure out what Haley wants and give it to him before Week One.

Bowe, a first-round pick in 2007, caught 86 passes for 1,022 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Not good enough to beat out the white vet? They’ve been saying that about black QBs for 40 years. Ask BHPriest.

When discussing black QBs, you must not imply there are shortcomings in their game. You cannot say they are still learning – that means they are dumb because they are black. Readers will believe you are reinforcing racist stereotypes.

The only egalitarian approach is to immediately confer HOF status on every black, hispanic, asian, mixed-race, LGBT, mormon, or dyslexic quarterback….period.

In that sense I’ve been kind of disappointed, but I’m doing everything I can to get that corrected and take the right angles, and that means you’ve got to hit Mike Bush low. He’s a big boy. I predicted this and everybody said I was trying to pigeon hole him or whatever. LenDale White fills this role for the Titans and he’s a beast in fantasy football. They win games. whats wrong with that?

do these guys have the arm strength for all the long balls in the Tollner/Hackett Air Coryell offense?

Heyward-Bey and the WR’s can run 40 yards in 4 seconds, but these cats can probably only throw 20 yards with any amount of accuracy…

    I think we’ll see a lot of short passes to the RB’s & TE’s.

Except that’s not what you said, backtracking moron.

Glenny: Raiders didn’t take Crabtree because they knew he was going to hold out, and want more money. They discussed money when they interviewed him.

Idiot take. Backtracking like a fool, idiot take.

Moi: Why didn’t the Raiders pass on Russell, considering he held out longer than anyone has in the last 20 years, IF they already discussed contracts?

GlenntheMoron: “oh..uh…that…um…well…uh.. because they already had 3 quality qb’s on the roster, in McClown, Culp, and that rising star Walter. Also Al didn’t need him for game one, so we decided to just pay him 8 million to sit on the bench..yeah, there you go..I’m running with that answer.”

I’ll repeat myself so you can pretend you didn’t read it, fool.

    ========================================
    lol…yeah…except neither will happen.

Crabtree AND ALL OF THE OTHER HOLDOUTS will sign contracts.
Crabtree will actually catch the ball.
Bey? Will likely be a backup WR, stupidly tossed in every once in a while to “go deep” where D backs will drool, knowing Al just sent in the play, and Russell is going to just toss it up.

Old man has a few tricks up his sleeve?
Didn’t you say that when he went out and signed Walker for 50 mil? Hall for 50 mil? Kelly for huge bucks? Gabril Wilson for same? AND KWAME HARRIS??
ONLY one in that group who did their job was Gabril, leading the team in tackles, where Al promptly canned him for daring to state Hall shouldn’t have been let go.

Is that the Al you’re braggin about?

Everyone laughed at Al for picking Bey, and then picking Mitchell.

And everyone was right. Bey will be mediocre at best, and Mitchell is already playing like he was listed…

We played the NFL CBS FFL. Dakota , Marley, Kirk,LMN, MistaBrown, and a few others.

I was tied for the most wins and lost in the first round to Kirk who defeated Dakota in the final.

I think that’s how it played out. I also think Marley played Dakota in the first round. I Had a lot of fun, especially the e-mail between us during the week on the FFL site.

  501. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Ricochet, the campaign in here against Crabtree is just hilarious. If you review the comments, there are as many about Crabtree as there are about the Raiders’ training camp! Goes to show the priorities of the Raiders today. It’s not about the Raiders winning or what they’re doing to win. It’s about making al look good, nothing else. This team can go 0-16 every year, and the priority by these talking heads in here will not be to get new management and a new coaching staff, it will be to blame players and to point out how bad other teams are. That’s it. One of these guys talks about how it’s a great morning to be a Raider fan, whatever. In the ’70s and early ’80s, when I was growing up, it really was a good morning to be a Raider fan. To paraphrase Ken Stabler, every year we knew we were going to win. You don’t have that now. In fact, every year you know you’re going to lose. Half of us want Al to retire because of it. The other half would rather just lie to themselves and everyone else about how great we are. If this is a great morning to be a Raider fan, then let me paraphrase Sting and the Police; Bring on the night. I just can’t stand another hour of daylight.

  504. Raider Dell Says:

    4evaRaider

The FFL will be fun. Don’t panic, go to some of these football web sites and write down the players that you think will perform well. The biggest and most important suggestion is rank the players, not by position by best value to assure you points.

For example many people last year chose Tom Brady as the number one fantasy player, we all know that knee injury set back a lot of plyers playing fantasy.

Injurys will be there just plan on having fun, with a back up plan in place.

  505. beeecham Says:

Thanks for the invite, my old pal, but fantasy football isn’t really my thing. I really don’t care about what any other player in the NFL does if they’re not wearing silver & black.

Gruden’s return will be limited to when another Florida Job comes available.

That will be Jacksonville after this year.

Now that I think of it we should bring him back, sign him for two years, and then we can suck another team into paying us a crap load of money and draft picks to take him and his cut and paste Mike Holmgrem offense.

    …………..

My god…you guys still think Gruden wanted to get out of Oakland so he could coach in Florida? It’s one thing to lie, but when your lies take on a new life and become part of your own sense of history, it’s pretty sad.

Basically, your insistence on him stating his favorite team is a white flag in regards to his comments about the Raiders. You’re basically saying, “ok, got me. You’re right. But tell me your team, so I can make fun of them now”. Maybe he doesn’t even have a favorite team. I’m pretty much heading there. I’m almost through with the Raiders, and I don’t plan on taking up another team. A lot of people just watch the NFL, and mock their former team for continuing to self destruct. ONE good Cb, not two.
    Mediocre LB’s.
ZERO DEFENSE AGAINST THE RUN. (anyone care to explain how the Raiders defense averaged 4.8 ypc while Kelly was out half the year injured, then went to 5.4 ypc when he got back, and THEN AL DECIDES TO REWARD THAT WITH A HUGE CONTRACT??)
TB win was impressive? Did the writer not notice that TB had lost THE PREVIOUS 3 GAMES, where each one they knew they needed a win? TB’s defense was shredded, and Bush had a career day against that weak D. How is that win “impressive”?
Even with those last two wins, Russell STILL ended up as the worst starting qb in the league. Horrible numbers.
And why much goes for naught?

O line will continue to be porous. With Barnes out, an injury means Russell will be running for his life on every play.

HEY?? He should call Aaron Brooks..he can give him some pointers on scrambling for your life.
and then, Bey, ala Moss, can run deep, wave his hand up, only to turn and see the qb under a pile of bodies.

I understand someone from an opposing fan base coming here to talk sh*t, but at least they usually have the balls to stand up for their team so that we can all have a stand up, semi-respectable debate about it.

That’s what a real fan does. At least Charged Up, Charger, and all those other guys that used to come in here and post would stand up for their team so that we could have a somewhat intelligent debate back and forth.

Coming in here day after day, talking sh*t and then hiding behind a computer without even the courage to stand up for their team, is cowardly and spineless. Straight Up!

    ====================================
Same babbling boobs defended Al’s 250 million spending spree, stating “Aso and Hall are best tandem in the league, GUARANTEED”
“Russell to Javon Walker..best tandem in the league..GUARANTEED”
“WAY TO GO AL, YOU STILL GOT IT”

Of course, Al then torpedoed that idea.

And now? Raiders are on the clock and Crabtree, best WR, some say the best player is available.
EVERY RAIDER BOARD had fans frothing at the mouth, already ordering their Crabtree jersey, with the “Best WR since Rice is going to be a Raider” Threads were popping up about how “Russell to Crabtree” was going to re-write record books…

and then….”Raiders, with the 7th pick in the draft, pick Darrius Heyward-Bey”

A collective WTF resounded across every Raider fan living room, and on EVERY Raider board.

And when the Niners took Crabtree, you then saw another collective “sigh”, knowing right across the bay was going to be the player EVERY RAIDER FAN WANTED.

Now? Desperate..oh so desperate to somehow attempt to save face.
I mean, how else can you describe “Well, Bey might have a lot of problems, but he’s in camp, and the best receiver in college is still holding out, along with picks #6, #8, #9, #10, and #11.
    so ha ha.”

    Now THAT is sad…and weak.

Why is it some equate “true fan” by being a mouse?

A TRUE FAN should demand better, not just accept every silly whim from a stubborn hard headed, all about me, owner.
Ticket buyers have an interest vested in the team. You have the RIGHT to demand a return on your investment, and to hold accountable those who make decisions that hinder the outcome.

    In a corporation?

Yes or no, Raider fans..would Al Davis have been ousted by stock holders?

You all know the answer to that.

  586. AZ Raider2 Says:

It’s Me Vs. You, and I always win!!!

  588. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Chaz Schilens will be a starting wide receiver. He should be good for 3 to 5 receptions per game.

The receiver opposite him will be JLH, DHB or Javon Walker. A lot depends on what happens in these exhibition games.

Running back will be a three-man platoon. DMAC will get several reps at WR which will give him about 15 touches per gm. Bush and Fargas probably split the rest getting about 5 carries a piece.

The “run-fense” is on a wait and see. There is no depth at Defensive Tackle and the Middle Linebacker position is rapidly becoming a source of weakness. Safety position is unsettled with a lot of unproven talent. The SLB is also a big question mark.

Cornerbacks are solid. Pass rush DEs should pressure the QB…can they stop the run though….

Kush, this is not a blog for Raider fans or “Nation members”. This is a blog owned by InsideBayArea and operated by a journalist, completely independent of the Raiders. Comments sections are supposed to be on the topic of the current blog post.

The morning practice ended with a scary sight for the Raiders’ offense. OLB Thomas Howard came untouched on a blitz. If this were a real game, he would have clocked QB JaMarcus Russell. That problem needs to be fixed before Thursday’s game against Dallas.

    ——————————————————-
It won’t matter whether or not Russell is improving this season if they still can’t block for him. I sure hope this was a fluke.

Frankly, I think Obama should have slapped that pig with a federal investigation and his entire department with a consent decree. This is America. A man shows his ID in his own house and the police don’t have any reason to be there without a warrant. That pig was on a power trip.

It matters to me TRMR because this is a blog for Raider fans and Nation members. It’s job is to provide relevant information about the RAIDERS football season. Why would anyone come here day after day to read and discuss information pertaining to the RAIDERS when they are not a RAIDER FAN?

I understand someone from an opposing fan base coming here to talk sh*t, but at least they usually have the balls to stand up for their team so that we can all have a stand up, semi-respectable debate about it.

That’s what a real fan does. At least Charged Up, Charger, and all those other guys that used to come in here and post would stand up for their team so that we could have a somewhat intelligent debate back and forth.

Coming in here day after day, talking sh*t and then hiding behind a computer without even the courage to stand up for their team, is cowardly and spineless. Straight Up!
    =====================================
    ===========================================
So, you just called yourself a coward.
    Called yourself SPINELESS.

    Yeah, wimp, YOU, lol…moron.

See, your last comments, to me, after I torched your silly inadequate reply, was “I’m done replying. I don’t want to play anymore. I’m taking my purse and going home” (words to that effect) Hell, you even BEGGED OTHER POSTERS TO DO AS YOU DO, which is tuck your tail between your legs, wave that white flag, and scream out NO MAS, NO MAS, POR FAVOR, NO MAS!!!.

As Madden said, you can’t defend the words, so instead you wish to state “Well, so and so also sucks.”
    Diversion reply.

Means you can’t back up your words, so you’re run the sorry “Well, how about so and so”

Madden was dead on..you’re post says exactly “YOU’RE RIGHT. I HAVE NO DEFENSE, so let’s not discuss the Raiders. what’s YOUR team?”

You’re a “Headline” poster. All you know is what you see on the headlines, and for you, that’s all you can discuss.

shut up fool, you’re just embarrassing yourself.

    Another dumber than cotton comment.
“for people interested in the Raiders”?
    According to who?

    Oh, wait, I get it.
You were crying earlier to the tune of “sniff…sniff…why can’t we just have people here who are blind loyalists? Who never question anything? Why can’t we all just agree on everything the Raiders say or do? why? WHY????”

You can be interested in counting the dimples on golf balls, and you can still stop by and state “Al is a baffoon.”

Quit your crying, Kushy. It’s embarrassing.
