Cable wants Raiders feeling low

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, August 14th, 2009 at 6:01 pm in Oakland Raiders.

News and notes from Tom Cable’s conference call with Bay Area media Friday night, the day after a 31-10 win over the Dallas Cowboys:

– Getting up for the game is one thing, staying up is something else entirely.

It happened on the Cowboys’ second drive, which they had their most success running and drove for a touchdown, and to a lesser extent, throughout the game.

“I thought, our entire team, we were really playing way too high right now on both sides of the line of scrimmage,” Cable said. “Even in running routes, and in coverage and all that, we’ve got to get our hips down. I think it’s a product of camp but it’s something that has to have some attention put to it right away.”

– Cable on Mario Henderson: “If we can get his body down he’ll be better and more explosive and powerful,” Cable said. “But he did fine. The guy he was playing against there for a couple of series (DeMarcus Ware) is really a great player, an impact player. He did fine against him. But Mario, the first thing he told me when he was done was, `I’ve got to get my body down.’

– The game film reaffirmed Cable’s postgame belief that the Raiders were playing fast.

“One thing I was surprised at, and I felt this way as I was watching it unfolding, and I feel that way after watching it on film, is just how fast we looked as a football team and in terms of decision-making,” Cable said. “I’m talking about everybody, not just the quarterback. We really got where we needed to be in a hurry on both sides of the ball and on special teams.”

– But about those 14 penalties for 107 yards . . .

“It’s obviously a concern,” Cable said. “We’ve put a lot into that so we’ll continue to do that . . . as I mentioned to them after the game, it’s just too many.”

– The Raiders threw 37 times as opposed to 26 runs, and had to close with a rush with seven runs by Gary Russell in the final eight plays, to get that many.

“I just wanted to work to throw the ball,” Cable said. “Where we will be I think depends on how far we can take this passing game.”

– Cable conceded it was a shaky game by cornerback Stanford Routt, who had a defensive holding penalty and struggled in coverage.

“He could have been a bit tighter in some of his coverage and I think he’d probably be the first one to tell you that,” Cable said.

– The National Football Post is reporting the Raiders worked out linebacker Morlon Greenwood, 31, who last played for the Houston Texans. Considering they were also reported to have asked about Derrick Brooks, you wonder how serious Jon Alston’s foot condition (plantar fasciatis) is. Cable declined to address any players the Raiders have worked out.

– When asked about the performance of running back Darren McFadden, Cable made sure to include the other two heads of the three-headed monster.

“He hit a crease, caught a ball, caught the screen,” Cable said. “It was nice to get him in there a little bit. Same thing with (Justin) Fargas. Same thing with (Michael) Bush. Each of them kind of did what we thought we needed them to do.”

In Fargas case, they thought they needed him to run one time for two yards.

– Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (heel) and center John Wade (stinger) are day to day. Linebacker Isaiah Ekejiuba (shoulder), who left the locker room with an ice bag strapped to his shoulder, “looks to be a few days,” Cable said. Safety Mike Mitchell “is a wait and see thing right now.”

– The Raiders will have one session both Saturday and Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

    first!

‘The Raiders Return To Greatness Is Inevitable’

  3. Dmac20 Says:

    Smh all those… penalties

  4. Kush Says:

To be honest 9 out of the 14 penalties were committed by non-starters. Players that may seldom see the football field once the regular seasin starts. But it still needs to be improved though.

  5. Tonio Says:

the worst of the flags was near the goal line… unacceptable…

  6. Dmac20 Says:

True that kush… But thats still 5 too many. And I’d take a huff pass interference over a td anyday.lol I have no problem with a flag if its the difference between a score.

  7. dtrain Says:

I don’t think Huff’s penalty was one at all. I think he hit it at the right time. I thought that one was a bad call. But overall waaay too many. Sure most by non starters but starters only played 1 quarter.

  8. cs_raiderfan Says:

i thought the calls against Horton were pretty marginal.

Cable is pissed at RaiderRon for coming onto this blog so out of shape. Both men admitted as much.

He says things that don’t matter and are just question marks after other posters comments. How weak.

  14. NoMoreFargas Says:

So Raider ron thinks brown sucks but morrison and fargas are the bomb, yeah good call.

I was thinking the same thing when i read that.

I see that some of you were asking about a Fantasy Football League. I created one just for Raider Fans. 6 spots left. It’s IDP. 3 DBs and 3DLs and 2 each of the other positions. The online live draft is set for Friday, Aug 28 7:30pm.

    League ID#: 200239
    Password: raiders

First six are welcome to join. Be competitive

  17. Norco Bob Says:

The first team was terrible, just like last year. The pass rush was ridiculous,..Romo was untouched during his time,..Terdell Sands should be cut,..big lazy dude with no skills. Come opener Rivers will possibly throw for 450 yards.

  18. Norco Bob Says:

Raiderserious,..no thanks, but there are alot of shut-ins in here that will take you up on that,..anything to keep them from actually meeting a woman is what theyre all about.

  19. Al DAVIS HAS COJONES Says:

MR — Your negativity isn’t going to change the fact that Chaz Schilens looks like a real player.

    ……

And your delusional kool aid isn’t going to change the fact that Shilens looked like a real player against a bunch of backups.

He had one solid reception against their first squad, and I gave him props. Nice separation, extended to catch the ball, had it not been on the sideline he could have turned it up field for a big play. But is that reason to chalk him up as “real player”? I’m going to wait and see what he looks like against live bullets in the regular season. There’s nothing wrong with thinking a player has potential but you guys act like every player that lights it up against a 3rd string defense is going to be a pro bowler. It’s embarrassing. Only Raider fans do this.

  25. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

Don’t the niners look gay in their uniforms?

I don’t know whats more disgusting the bronco’s or them!

  26. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

I think Al Davis purposely keeps his starting receivers and backs in against opposing backups to make them look good. It’s too bad some fans like HayesDaze fall for it.

  27. Dmac20 Says:

666 They play in frisco… So I thinks thats the aim.lol

  28. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Dmac, there’s gangsters in Frisco that will cut your head off and leave it on your momma’s porch.

  29. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

I hate to do it but I have to agree with MR on that.

At the end of the first period it was Dallas 7 us 3 and their offense moved the ball at will against our first team defense.

Until we fix it run defense we will never have am 8 win or better season.

  30. RaiderSerious Says:

Norco Bob, you’re stereotyping. Not all of us that play FF are shut-ins. You guys from Norco are something else. Just kidding. Hey if a shut-in wants to join my league it’s fine with me. As long as they know their football and are Raider Fans.

  31. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

    LaMont Jordon cannot block!

He is a useless turd in Denver’s barf color color uniform!

  32. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

Again MR post #28 very true.

  33. 504 Raider Says:

So far we look like the most effective offensive team in the league. 456 yds. Wow!

  34. Dmac20 Says:

I think Al Davis purposely keeps his starting receivers and backs in against opposing backups to make them look good. It’s too bad some fans like HayesDaze fall for it.

    ———————————————-

God damn… Trmr you are the most negative person in the F***in universe I swear. You’re like a nagging wife. If its not one thing its another. You always have something to complain about. You must don’t get any pu**y or somethin… Must not with that attitude. Smh… It sounds like you hate everything raiders… If I were you I’d just become a patriot fan because the raiders keep you stressed, whether its the qb, startin rb, the coaches play call, the o-line, d-line, safeties, the owner, and now its the wide recievers??? Yea dude… I think it’d be best you just find another team so you can finally be happy.

And its not als fault the cowboys starting dbs were hurt. You’re telling me just because the other teams starters are down our starting recievers shouldn’t play??? The majority of our receviers are young, so yea they need the live game reps to be more prepared for the regular season because they will play an intrigual part in our O this year. So wanna let them play as much as possible to get the jitters out of their systems early. I believe thats more the reason he plays them more rather than just to make them look good in a meaningless game…

  35. 408RAIDER Says:

Chaz is the man. AND THE WHINERS ARE GAY-

  36. Dmac20 Says:

Trmr plese you know nothing about the hood. So don’t start that. Theres gangsters every where yes this I know… But in frisco the rate if gay people is high point blank… Thats being honest. Across the globe San fran is known more for being the haven for people “like you” more than they are known for their hoods, and that says alot. But being realistic I have a better chance of getting shot than getting my head cut off, but you’ve never been in no hood so I don’t even see why you comment…

  37. lefty12 Says:

they moved the ball at will-that’s why they had that huge 7-3 lead and if we would have played our starting RBs it would have been 7-7,because everyone knows Mac and Bush will be the main backs near the goal line once the games count.

  38. RaiderMight Says:

Really loving this Orton guy. :)

  39. Dmac20 Says:

I believe we are going to smash the niners on saturday. I know it means nothing but my big bro and a couple of my friends are niners fans, and I loooove to talk s**t, So it means alot to me as far as bragging r goes… Preseason or not.

  40. lefty12 Says:

MR-are you one of those people who was a Raider fan in the late 70s and then became a whiner fan when Davis deserted us and moved to la la land?there are many of those.in fact, the whiners couldn’t sell out until that happened.that would explain your attitude towards the Raiders and AD.

  41. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

    ““““““““““““““““““

Chaz Is a player he made big plays in the regular season lat year including a nice 60 yard reception against the ravens… Its not his fault the coaches didn’t start him until darn near the end of the season and he got hurt. Check his highlights on nfl.com you’ll see he has quite a few good plays aginst first teamers in the regular season, and now he has another training camp under his belt and more experienc so he can only get better. He runs a 4.38, has sticky fingers, he’s 6′4 with a 43 inch vert, and his confidence is there… So why wouldn’t he be a player??? Crabgreed wishes he had those measurables, but I bet you’d say crabtree was a player huh??? Smh

  54. 408RAIDER Says:

thats cool Ill have to check it out.. I have to admit I like most of the NATION that post here but the mod and Elmer fudd act like theyre all powerful.. Its very annoying when they leave all the racism and gay pen1s jokes posted delete good raider talk…

  55. Dmac20 Says:

haha I was reading profootballtalk yesterday and I saw your name on there thought thats was you. The raider haters are thick on that site though don’t you think?

  56. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

The niners are running into the locker room right now to get a closer look at Singletary’s ass.

  57. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

    Dmac20

Yeah lots of Raider fans there!!

    Lots of haters too.

  58. Raider O Says:

I’m not sold on our DTs, CJ, and Oline.

  59. Dmac20 Says:

Kyle orton looks horrible in the pocket. Haha our third stringer is better than that bum. When he feels pressure he gets scared and just throws whatever to whoever, Dbs, safeties, linebackers.lol I wouldn’t be surprised if a lineman got a pick off that bum if it wasn’t preseason and he had to sit.haha

  60. Dmac20 Says:

Yea I feel you raider O but you’ve got to remmember we didn’t haveour complete O line out there. Gallery was out, and barnes didn’t play… So I wouldn’t expect much from them. They still held their own though… Its just they didn’t give jamarcus that tom brady time in the pockect(lol) but who does besides the pattsies, Our d-line is horrid, and I think cj will be ok once the season starts. Nexy draft its pretty safe to say we’ll be going all defense darn near, with the exception of an O-lineman.

  61. Raider O Says:

CJ makes good plays, but he gives a lot too.

Our DTs are Sorry, and we need another DT. Teaching these bus how to play is not working. I want results.

Our Oline wasn’t good, Mario got away with some holding on Ware, Satele played well, but the rest were sorry!

R Brown is too small to play Mike, and Kirk …. Well, kirk is Kirk.

T Scott needs to learn to play the run, or be a pass rusher ONLY.
When he was asked about setting the edge, he said: ” what edge?”

  62. Raider O Says:

    * teaching these guys…

  63. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

The O-Line will eventually work well together (Cable is still here) Satele looks real good, I hope that feeling last’s. This is also me being positive.

However Raider O you are correct in saying that we did absolutely nothing to improve our run defense which was 31st last year. I don’t have a positive feeling about this.

Teams are going to run on us and it will be embarrassing unless we fix it.

  64. Raider O Says:

I agree about Gallery and Barnes, and that impact the Oline.
Hope you are right about next year’s draft.

  65. Raider O Says:

    Satele played very well.

  66. THREE RING CIRCUS Says:

    raidaz 7-9 yeah baby

    if we beat SD

    10-6

  67. THREE RING CIRCUS Says:

kyle orton threw 2 interceptions in two drives

  68. DKnight007 Says:

Wow! Coach Cable and I are the same page!

I mentioned in the last post that the D-Line seemed to be getting stood up way to often and that they need to more explosive and player lower with leverage.

Coach Cable said the whole team played to high and I agree with that….but the O-Line seemed to be playing too high at times as well!

Coach hit it on the head…and the team as a whole needs to play lower and play with more intensity and with more leverage.

  69. Raider O Says:

I don’t think Cable is going to say:

-We need a DT, so we should draft one next year
-Our DTs can penetrate, but they are sorry against the run.
-We should have traded Burgess and Walter fir V Wilfork.

    lol

  70. On the beach in Cancun Says:

Our defensive line really sucked on that second drive by Dallas. They ran right through us like butter. It was so scary, because it reminded me of last years d-line and the five years before then. The D-line really sucked and we’re always going to be playing from behind until we can address the defensive line. Our offensive line sucks a little as well. And, we need help at the line backer positions.

But we did win, our offense looked great, the o-line, to their credit did give JR time and the other 2 QB’s did great as well. So, there are a lot of positives. Like so many of us, I’m just tired of losing and I want to see us win, especially the opener against the dischargers.

  71. Kush Says:

This is my analysis of the Raiders from watching the game last night…

    The Positives:

1)Jamarcus Russell. Say what you want about his weight, but he looked decisive, accurate on the short and intermediate routes, elusive when under pressure, and poised. He definitely has improved.

2)Chaz Schilens. He is the real deal. I don’t care what defense he was playing against. When he slid to make the catch that was under thrown, and then had the awareness to get up untouched, make a defender miss and get the first down, plus a couple of yards, that is a result of talent, point blank.

Mario Henderson. He is the real deal. He handled yet another dominant DE in Demarcus Ware and didn’t commit any stupid penalties. So what if he held on a play! If the refs don’t call it, it didn’t happen. There is holding on every play by someone, the key is not getting caught. O’shaunessy was clearly held on a play. The announcers all commented on it, but the refs didn’t call it, so move on, next play.

Darren Mcfadden – Beast, playmaker, scoring machine. Top 5 Running Back in the entire NFL when healthy. He needs to be the starter, Period!

Michael Bush- Beast. Powerful yet light on his feet. Good blocker. Needs to back up Mcfadden. Him and Mcfadden, along with our zone blocking could be the best 1-2 combo in the league.

Our O-Line. Taking into account that 40% of our starting line is missing with Gallery and Barnes out, they did quite well. I believe they will be markedly improved. Only one sack on Jamarcus and that is with a depleted line. They opened up holes for runners and did not get dominated at the line of scrimmage.

    Negatives:

Our Run Defense. Still sucks. Period. Ridiculous, unacceptable and disgusting. We hear all of this talk about stopping the run, but the Cowboys still still march down the field on their second drive, using mostly running pla

Pressuring the QB: The touchdown that Romo scored to Whitten was because ONCE AGAIN the defensive scheme on that play was to rush 3 FREAKING PEOPLE and drop the rest into coverage!

If we are going to play a man defense, it doesn’t matter if we have Deion Sanders, Ronnie Lott and Rod woodson in their primes, if the FREAKING QB has ALL DAY TO THROW THE BALL HE WILL SCORE! Our scheme only works if you PRESSURE THE QUARTERBACK. A pass rush of 3 FREAKING PEOPLE! Pathetic.

In conclusion, our offense actually looks improved, much sharper, and decisive. DHB CAUGHT THE BALL PEOPLE! Jamarcus actually under threw him on the first bomb down the sidelines. He will open up the field and the rest of our offense will be the beneficiary.

Our DEFENSE STILL SUCKS. It’s a case of different toilet same sh*t.

Until we can pressure the quarterback and stop the run, or at least do one or the other, we ARE NOT going to nobody’s playoffs.

    7-9 or 8-8! That’s my prediction.

  72. omniscience Says:

Thats true glad it is just the first pre season game but that Dallas O line is huge and all pro bowlers or Ex so time will tell maybe not a bad idea to bring in Brooks. I thougt we had enough linebackers may need some help….

  73. Kirk Says:

Nice game, but until Crazy Al starts drafting linemen in the first round, we aren’t going to win any championships.

  74. Kirk Says:

I thought Slade Norris looked like our best middle linebacker. He brought down the tight end like a cowboy wrestling a steer to the ground.

    Evil Roy Slade.

  75. priesttj Says:

I noticed a guy on the Oline named Johnson, big guy who looks like he may be a player. Slade Norris was impressive at times.

Marcel Reece looks like a keeper. Brandon Myers looks like a much better player tha the Raiders expected. We went from no WR’s to tooo many.

DMC and Bush look like two of the best HB’s we’ve ever had, talk about thunder and lightning. WOW!!

  76. Raider O Says:

    Too many WRs!!
    LMAO

That’s a good problem to have.

  77. Raider O Says:

Norris should compete with Brown to start at SAM. IMHO

Eugene looked great, and Branch and Huff played well. But the CBs were off yesterday.
CJ and Stanford gave a lot, and that could be to the lack pressure from the Dline.

  78. priesttj Says:

Raider O, I appreciate you saying Eugene looked good. Because it’s truee. One of my pet peeves about this comments section is when peple say things because they feel it’ll make them popular.

The overall feeling about Eugene is he sucks!! which is not true but he is not a ppular player in here so that means he sucks. Anyone who’s not the favorite of a poster all of a sudden is the wrst player in the league.

Eugene is a good football player…………..period the coaches know it.

  79. lefty12 Says:

Priest, you mean the coaches know more than the people who post on here?i’ll be damned.

  80. Raider O Says:

    BHP,

Eugene has showed that he belongs on the field. If Huff, Branch, or NM want to take his spot, then they have to earn it.

    We have some good problems:
    - Too many RBs
    - Too many WRs
    - Too many backup QBs
    - Too many Ss

  81. Raider O Says:

    NM : MM sorry.

  82. The RaiderCast | Cable wants Raiders feeling low Says:

    [...] Read more. [...]

  83. Raider O Says:

    BHP,

You were right about Matt S, he can hold the edge. I can’t wait to see what he does after he adds a few pounds. He still has good speed and burst. He didn’t do much due to him playing RE. IMHO he would have been more comfortable playing LE.

  84. priesttj Says:

Lefty12, isn’t that odd these fans could actually be wrong. Hopefully this defense will get sorted out before the season starts. We need to play much better the next time out.

Who’s this #78 Oline Johnson?? I was impressed. Do we really need Garcia?? after the way those two guy’s played.

  85. Raider O Says:

Boyd is interesting, and I can’t wait to see Mitchell.
Do we keep 4 or 5 Ss?

    Eugene
    Branch
    MM
    Huff

    And maybe Boyd

Do we keep 5 or 6 WRs?
    Chaz
    DHB
    JLH
    Murphy
    Walker

And maybe Miller. Even Plun compared him to the Pats WR.

  86. priesttj Says:

Raider O, he was very good in the Big 10 but he was injured so he dropped in the draft. We may have a real player in Shaughnessey. Let’s let him get better and yu’ll see this kid come off the edge. He was a very good pass rusher as well.

  87. Raider O Says:

    BHP,

M Johnson was playing RG for us yesterday ( he came from the Vikings, he was a high pick to play LT. Reminds you of anyone? lol), and he looked good too.

I want to see these players play more: Norris, Matt S, Boyd, Murphy, and N Miller.

I can’t wait to see Mitchell play!

  88. lefty12 Says:

i’m hoping a couple of our rookies make things difficult on def.i’d really like to see Norris and Shaugnessy come up big.hopefully some team will come calling for a QB and we can get something for Garcia.otherwise,i don’t see any reason for keeping him around, unless we can get more for one of the other 2.

  89. Raider O Says:

As you can see, I like adding new talent. lol
    Where is Frantz?

  90. jhill Says:

    Ok, here we go …

Hiram Eugene is a good player in the sense that he is in the NFL. Most people who can start in the NFL and be solid are good players.

But IMO, he is not I am looking for in a FS. He doesn’t miss tackles, but he is not making any plays. Good of him to stop that reverse 20 yds later. Good of him to be there to escort Jones out of bounds 14 yds later. Those are meaningless plays to me sort of like Morrisons tackles 5 yds down the field. He’s just there, if you know what I mean. Not ever standing out, not really doing anything, but not messing up either. I can appreciate that, don’t get me wrong, but I see more potential in Huff and Boyd.

  91. Raider O Says:

    Lefty,

I don’t think anyone will trade for a QB that we may cut in a few weeks. IMO

  92. lefty12 Says:

hope Johnson is for real.it seems as if Cooper is on the declinei’m sure we’ll see changes as the pre season unfolds.i have faith in this staff, unlike others who don’t.

  93. Raider O Says:

Eugene saved a TD, and he was the only player that didn’t bite on the reverse.

  94. RaiderRon Says:

You mean your boy Franz Joseph? The guy you said was guaranteed to make the club. Yeah, he got cut bout 3 weeks ago. Good call! LOL!!!!!

  95. Raider O Says:

I would rather give up 20 yards over a TD any day!

  96. jhill Says:

I see flashes from Huff that tell me he’s a better player in pass coverage. I like how he spent his summer studying the Ed Reeds and Brian Dawkins’ of the league. Add in Nnamdi and Morrison’s glowing reviews of his, plus the two outstanding plays he made last night, I just think he should start.

I actually like him at FS when Huff is in the R role in passing situations. Especially since Routt and everyone behind him is looking so bad.

  97. RaiderRon Says:

I actually think Hiram is a decent player, not good definitely not great, but decent. Kind of like ol Hiram.

  98. Raider O Says:

    You remember!!! lol

Yes I did say that, and I also said Chaz was going to make it last year.

I can’t always be right!! lol

  99. lefty12 Says:

O-if someone needs a QB due to injuries, they may trade to get the guy so he can acclimate himself with there system and players.also,if more than 1 team are in need,1 might give a low pick so the other doesn’t pick him up.

  100. RaiderRon Says:

    Raider O,

Hows that Frantz prediction going?? LOL!!!!!!!!!

  101. Raider O Says:

Let’s the Ss, RBs, and WRs compete, and that should make them better. It showed yesterday!

  102. jhill Says:

Well, O, if his highlight is a escorting a guy OOB 20 after a big gain, then I would think that’s not much of a highlight. It’s a shamed how far that position has fallen that folks are just simply happy with a guy who can make a tackle, lol!

I understand what you are saying based on our past, but the FS play needs to be upgraded. Whether thats Eugene stepping up his game, Huff realizing his talents, Branch, Boyd, whoever, just get it done!

  103. Raider O Says:

    Ron,

    Not so good! lol

How about Chaz, how is he doing?

  104. RaiderRon Says:

DHB was the worst of the WRs I saw yesterday. He seems real stiff and awkward. Seems to be fighting the ball. Its early but…………

  105. lefty12 Says:

at least Eugene is a hard worker and doesn’t make many mistakes.solid and consistent but not spectacular, better than anyone else we’ve had there in years.didn’t he come up with some ints. near the end of last season?can’t remember for sure.

  106. RaiderRon Says:

I am a Chaz fan, youll get no argument from me.

  107. RaiderRon Says:

There is ZERO reason for Javon Walker to be on this club. Period. End.

  108. Raider O Says:

I would say let the LBs compete, but TH is a great WLB, and all the rest are SAMs. We don’t have a true MIKE!!!!!

I’m ready to move Kirk to SAM, and bring in a true MLB.
Brown is too small, so save that one for later!

  109. jhill Says:

better than anyone else we’ve had there in years isn’t hard to do. I agree with everything you guys are saying about Eugene. He’s a decent player. We need decent players to be backups!

  110. Raider O Says:

    Ron,

I agree, but it’s cheaper to keep him than cutting this year. We can cut him next year! lol

  111. jhill Says:

I think that we should get Walker in a game as soon as possible and let him get A LOT of snaps. Hopefully he looks like a stud so we can trade him for something. His contract is very friendly as well.

  112. lefty12 Says:

don’t be surprised if one of our young WRs comes up with a mysterious injury right before cut date.

  113. RaiderRon Says:

Good/Great teams have “decent” players as backups. Teams like the Raiders have them as starters.

  114. Raider O Says:

I would day let the DTs compete, but……

We need a Run Stuffer who can hold the point, and demand double teams!

  115. Raider O Says:

    *say

  116. lefty12 Says:

Jhill,so true.that’s probably why we drafted MM and signed Boyd-trying to get better.as far as huff goes,he’s just too damn inconsistent.

  117. lefty12 Says:

at least on our current roster we have decent players.in the past, after Bruce and chuckies geritol team,we didn’t even have them.

  118. Raider O Says:

It’s getting late, and I’m tired.
Have a great night Gents and a great weekend.
    Later Nation.

  119. lefty12 Says:

from what i saw the last 2 days, things could be worse.did anyone see the whiner/donkey game?at least we have decent players.

  120. jhill Says:

    True Lefty,

what did you think about Trevor Scott’s play?

  121. lefty12 Says:

Jhill-lacking,very lacking.but he was playing against one of the better LTs in football.hopefully he’ll get better as the practice games go on-or else, someone will take his spot.J.Rich or Matt S.-if he progresses nicely.
    nite,O.

  122. jhill Says:

We still have the Chargers who will be at least 8-8. They’ll get the same 4 wins we will against KC and Denver, so if we want to make the playoffs this year we have to upgrade some of our “decent” players. And demoting someone to 2nd string is not like saying they don’t belong on the team.

Scott – awful against the run due to lack of size.

Morrison – Sorry, I’ve seen enough. And with his upcoming outlandish contract demands, might as well pull the plug.

Eugene – Cmon Mithcell, get that leg right. Push Branch to FS, Huff to R.

Warren – Didn’t like how he couldn’t beat single blocks, and was getting blown back when doubled.

    Routt – Uggghhh

I know it was only week one, but …..

  123. jhill Says:

But we have been hearing about Scott getting tossed around all of camp. Does that say something about Mario? Or will we see a pattern here with Scott? The really troubling thing is 2 of his pancakes were applied by Whitten.

  124. KoolKell Says:

Ted Tollner and Paul Hackett are doing a great job. A very diversified passing attack, and the ball came out on time with all 3 QB’s.

  125. lefty12 Says:

Jhill, there seem to be a lot of options at DE.J.Rich and Ellis start-Scott and Matt back up and groomed for the future.Matt & Ellis start,Scott(if he improves)& ellis start.a lot of combinations.that is what the practice games are for-to let these things work themselves out.

  126. Chris in NY Says:

I feel like Morrison could do well on the outside. No need to cut him.

Also, I begged for weeks leading up to the draft for the Raiders to take Maualuga.

  127. lefty12 Says:

Jhill,i’m not too concerned with Warren.he knows the games don’t count.imo, his intensity will improve.right now they just want to get through these practice games healthy.
KK-i heard today the only knock on JR last nite was he never looked off the safeties.something to work on,but as you say,all 3 looked good.

  128. Chris in NY Says:

    Orton throws 3 picks?!?!

Donkeys fans must be going crazy right now. Has a new head coach ever been fired before his first regular season actually began?

Simms might actually be in the lead to win that starting job right now.

  129. On the beach in Cancun Says:

    Kush…post #71

Well said, well explained, as you said: point blank right on.

WHAT REALLY PIZZES ME OFF IS WHEN WE RUSH 3 AND THEN SOMETIMES THE STUPID NOSE TACKLE DOWNS BACK AS WELL AND WE HAVE TWO IDIOTS RUSHING. WE’LL NEVER MAKE THE PLAYOFFS DOING THAT KIND OF CRAP.

  130. KoolKell Says:

Rushing 3 with your back against the endzone?

  131. destrilogy Says:

I HATE THE PENALTIES ON THE GOAL LINE. HATE THEM. THEY KILL US.

the right side of our O line is looking EXTREMELY SHAKY. i think our left side is playing extremely well including our center samson. but JESUS. RG and RT. are dead awful. i hate cornell green with a passion and those 2 penalties by cooper really got me pissed off.

but then i saw mcfadden run for 45 yards. so i got happy again.

chaz schillens played really really good.

  132. lefty12 Says:

KK-practice games.try different things and see what works.see who can do what.everyone wants diversity-trial and error.

  133. Kush Says:

I seriously hope that rush 3 crap is just to see how it works in the preseason, and then once the season actually starts, Marshall will unleash the HOUNDS OF HELL!

Wasn’t it Al Davis who coined, “The Quarterback must go down, and go down hard?”

Maybe if your three man rush consisted of Strahan, Reggie White, and Mean Joe Green in their primes, it might work, but with our personnel on the D-line, we aint got no business rushing 3 people. Fact not fiction.

  134. bombs4ya Says:

i would like t see paul mcquistan at the right guard spot . he plays physical. his holding penalty looked more like he pancaked the guy . cooper got to go a year ago. i think we’re gonna be an exciting team to watch. we will score points. the question is can we stop teams fom scoring . the d-line concerns me .hope we use the blitz and often. i think we will be hard to beat at home this year 6-7 wins ,easy our mystique at home is gonna be back. it’s what we do on the road. we beat the chargers weak one the division is ours we will finish 1st or 2nd . we are gonna surprise
but we will only go as far as the defense takes us.

we could make the post season or be the best team that don’t this year .we are 1or 2 stud d-tackles and two stud offensive linemen away.

maybe we can get a 3rd rounder for garcia and one for fargas. love fargas but we can’t let rankin go he’s like bush and dmac combined .

i know it’s only one game but cable seems to have a plan . players are gonna want to be apart of this young talented up and coming team………

  141. Florida Pete Says:

rushing three just reminds me of the futile efforts of our defense over the past 6 years…

    it is ineffective…

it is a recipe for disaster…

it is a hobbled prevent defense…

any smart quarterback will defeat it…

  142. Florida Pete Says:

it doesn’t look like K Morrison can get it done in the middle…

i’m not sure he ever could… Danny Clark should have been there for us instead of Kirk…

i’m not sure we have someone right now who would be a good MLB… but surely we have someone who can step in for a year…

maybe Minnesota needs a receiver… and we can get Brinkley… Brinkley right now is 3 on thier depth chart at MLB… could be an easy trade…

but we absolutely need someone to help with the run… in my humble opinion, Morrison was never that guy… the knock on him coming out of college was that he couldn’t shed blockers…

i think we are going to get run on all game by every team we face… and it will continue until we demonstrate that we can stop the run…

  143. 4evaRaider Says:

  161. 4evaRaider Says:

why not just trade Nick Miller???

  162. jhill Says:

That 2nd drive was more about Stanford Routt and Trevor Scott than anything.

Routt got beat by Williams on an out play.

Scott and Routt totally bit on the reverse for big yards.

Routt got manhandled by Williams on the Felix Jones (remember Nnamdi stopping that play on the first drive?) while Scott was tossed out of the way by the LT.

Routt got flagged for defensive holding on Williams.

Routt got beat by the TE for 6.

Not sure how upgrading the DT spot would’ve helped any of that.

Tone Tips: Acoustic Flat-Top Body Styles
Most newcomers to the flat-top acoustic guitar are likely to choose a style of instrument by selecting a size that suites their needs and which feels comfortable under the arm and in the lap. Body styles, however, have a major impact on tone, and it’s worth learning a few things about this dark art so that you’re able to acquire a guitar that suits your sonic needs, rather than merely buying one of a size and shape that have caught your eye for purely esthetic reasons. Branch looked really fast out their , a little wild for sure but would love to see him on blitz causing havok.

    *********************************

On the 3rd play of the game, he timed his blitz beautifully, beat the RB to the edge and forced Romo to loft a wobbler down the sideline incomplete (great coverage by Nmamdi as usual), and force a punt. Loved what I say there. He also made two third tackles short of the sticks, including one on that Bennett TE kid who looks like a beast. I thought Branch looked real good out there, especially when I watched it a second time.

I like our Offense. Add another OT, a G to compete, and we should be great. We are young and very talented.

Our Defense has talent, but not enough. We need to invest more in our front 4/7. The Defense lacks high draft picks with talent. No one in the front 7 was a 1st RD pick except Warren, and he wasn’t drafted by us.

  202. Charlie Says:

I still believe that we are sorting out the low “value” players on this roster. Low production relative to salary.
Kelly at $14 mill, Sands at $3 mill and Warren at $5 mill per YEAR are very poor value at this point.
Kelly will get this year to prove himself after ACL comeback last season.
IMO we will wait to final cuts and pick up at least one available DT letting Sands or Warren go.
We did it with Burgess (very poor value) and the Dline still is in need of personnel change.

What happened against Dallas on run defense was not Rob Ryan’s fault. (Hint- It never was).

Our DT’s suck. Our D Ends are inexperienced besides Ellis. Kirk Morrisson should not be the middle linebacker.

We need to blitz in the right situations. Since when has 3rd and long ever been the time to rush 3 people and generate no pressure?

Whether Al Davis calls the plays on defense or not, I blame him because he has watched that same crappy scheme for years and has refused to step in and do something about it.

We’ve seen for years that that rush 3 people crap DOESN’T WORK WITH OUR PERSONNEL, yet Al continues to allow it. Either draft or trade for stud tackles or stop doing that crap. It’s not rocket science guys, really.

  222. DKnight007 Says:

A couple guys on the O -Line who I thought played well were RG Marcus Johnson and Eric Pears.

Johnson looked like a beast out there at RG against 2nd and 3rd teamers! Lets hope he pushes Carlisle!

So glad Coach Cable recognized that the team as whole were playing way to high.

The O-Lines and D-Lines need to play a whole lot LOWER and the D-Line needs to play lower, be more aggressive, and use their hands to hand fight more and to disengage from blocks.

Brown may be the MIKE and Morrison may get moved to SAM….with Slade Norris getting good playing time as well.

I want to see more of Boschetti on the 1st team rotation at DT!

  231. Kush Says:

My honest opinion is that we have the ability to be a better defense, but it’s going to take a rearranging of our front 7.

It’s time to move Kirk from the Middle linebacker position. He’s not effective there. Sands sucks. He should be replaced by Boschetti immediately.

O’shaughnessy and should play opposite Ellis at the end spot. Scott is a pass rusher. He gets manhandled too much.

Never rush less than 4 people with our personnel. Especially on 3rd down.

To me those few adjustments will move us up about 7-9 spots in our defensive rankings because what we have been doing and continued to do last Thursday, IS NOT WORKING.

Boschetti should be given an opportunity to start or at least replace that Big underachieving Turd as the backup to Warren or Kelly. I would actually like to see Boschetti start ahead of Warren. Did the big Turd even show up on Thursday?

Johnson should keep be getting first team reps and competing heavily against the Carlisle at RG as well.

I would like to see what Johnson can do with the first teamers…..he looked like a beast out there at RG against 2nd and 3rd teamers on Thursday.

  235. Charlie Says:

I am generally of the opinion that talent is about 80% of the reason teams perform the way they do. Sure, schemes can help but we have not had the talent to compete for years.
I think that has changed in all areas except the Dline.
I do believe we will be making more changes on this unit before the season starts.
Other than Ellis and Kelly I believe it is wide open.
Any other player on the Dline could be gone at any time.
The help we will get this year could come after final cutdowns the week before the opener.
I do not like it any more than the rest of you but until we spend a first or second round pick on this unit, that is what we are facing.

  236. Charlie Says:

I still see that some fans think we should call our defense differently even though Ryan has departed.

Our DC calls the game the way he does because our Dline is weak. Defense starts with the front four. Period.

Blitzing 70% of the time is not the answer.

NFL offenses will shred a team that is that predictable.
If our front four played better alot of problems go away.

^^^^^^Oh I agree….thats why offenses have a field day on us (when they run because of a lack of penetration, staying low, effort, and gap discipline and when they pass, because of lack of consistent pressure, and lack of blitzing) because if the front four is weak, then things need to be mixed up and disguised to make up for that weakness. Rushing four players and 80% of the time isn’t going to cut it either.

Just like how an OC needs to mix it up on offense to keep defenses off balance….a DC needs to be on his toes and mix up the looks, stunts, and schemes on defense to keep offenses off balance.

  238. vegas raider Says:

    DKnight,

I agree 110% with your last post. Needing to change the looks on D is essential, but that doesn’t necessarily mean blitz all the time. When you rush 4 all the time and don’t mix it up much it is a bad recipe, especially if you are lacking talent (as we are). Lack of talent mixed with predictability equals games like the Patriots game where they could have scored 70 points if they had to. If you are the Ravens you can just line up and say bring it, but we are about the furthest thing on D from them.

  239. Kush Says:

Rushing 3 people on 3rd and long or 3rd and goal isn’t the answer either.

Most football people consider Marshall to be pretty good at what he does. I do remember the day when we could get sacks rushing three.(We had better players).

Schemes will never disguise a lack of talent along the line.
I think we need to be resigned to the fact that our defense will be average this year.
Ithink we have built this team from the outside in with the last pieces to be the lines.
I do not like it because I think it takes longer to win that way. If you have the patience it can be very rewarding like the Cowboys teams of the early nineties with Aikman,Smith and Irvin.

When the DC blitzes, then use the speed guys on defense to get to the freakin QB. Guys like Howard, Brown, Norris, and Scott. On a safety or corner blitz, lets see Branch, Mitchell, Huff, Routte and sometimes Nnamdi get in their an attack that QB from anywhere on the field….with their closing speed they will get a sack or at least disrupt the QB’s timing….

    =============================

Its pre season and coverage is more important to emphasise than rushing.

Plus, who wants to give away what D they’ll be playing and how good (or bad) it might be in a frikkin pre season game?

Lot of 2nd 3rd stringers out there too.

  245. Nnamdi21 Says:

    243. Jay zuz! Thats the longest messiest fukin link I’ve ever seen attempted! lol!

  246. vegas raider Says:

Please not much blitzing of Nmamdi. That was the Chuck Breshanan special, he would drop Upshaw in coverage (maybe our best pass rusher) and than send our best cover guy (C-Wood) to rush the passer. Completely azz-backwards and Shannon Sharpe torched us because of it. You gotta put players in scenarios where they just focus on what they do best.

  247. Nnamdi21 Says:

    238. We’re different on D with a different mission statement than most teams including the Ravens so its like comparing apples and kitchen sinks.

D is built to pass rush and cover the pass.

Offense has to put up points and control the clock in order for that type of D scheme to be maximized.

Thats the furthest thing to happen in the last 6 yrs.

  248. RaiderTW Says:

Yeah Nnamdi, or just copy the discription of the patch & look it up on e bay. only $8. I agree about the preseason D, I hope they see enough to change things. # man rush???! How intimidating. Stop the run!!!

    Pre season.

  250. vegas raider Says:

    Nmamdi,

Mission statements for companies are usually full of worthless rhetoric that sounds great. I just want to stop the team from scoring points. Our improved offense this year should help take a lot of pressure off the D. But it could work the other way, where the D is so bad it will add pressure on the offense to score and score often.

But hey at least the Donkeys look great!! LOL

  251. Nnamdi21 Says:

    248. SWEET!

Man, Morrison could lose his job if he keeps playing like he did / has.

Raider Nation Station seemed to be th only ones bashing on Morrison the last few years and it just seemed like it wasn’t right, but watching the games over and over, he’s constantly out of position, making bad calls and whiffing open field tackles.

Could be good at weak or strong, but he has sucked at MIKE.

  252. DarthPirate Says:

Moreno of the Donkos just has a sprain unfortunately.

  253. Florida Pete Says:

until we have an elite… and i mean currently elite… not a has been…

defensive player on the line… preferably a pass rushing and run defending end… an every down player…

we should not and can not have a three man rush…

    it just doesn’t work…

    oh, and my particular philosophy…

always always always have a player run with his strength…

    no DEs in coverage…

    no DTs in coverage…

    no blitzing nnamdi…

  254. Charlie Says:

You rush three occasionally on third and long to mix things up. It makes an OC think twice about a screen or draw in those situations.
(Watch what happens to a screen when you rush three).
Schemes will not be our problem this year. It will be our base defense stopping the run.
If we do not do that teams will run to set up the pass and then we will wonder why we are getting shredded through the air.

It all starts with the Dline.

  255. Nnamdi21 Says:

    250. Dear gawd lets hope not. Our offense has been so frikkin awful the last few years I’m not sure they could carry the day.

  256. Nnamdi21 Says:

Worried about Moreno running against us. Lets hope the Donkos D still suggz azz…

  257. vegas raider Says:

Moreno is the wild-card in the Cutler trade. We all know Orton is not the long-term answer, and may not be the short-term either, but they used the pick they got from the Bears to grab Yesshawn. He was a beast in college, and Georgia’s history of great backs is pretty impressive. Injuries maybe an issue with him, he runs very hard for a guy his size.

That’s kinda personal don’t you think?

  263. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Charlie, Florida Pete,

We have what we have on defense. We know what the problems are and there were opportunities to at least “try” to address those problems a few months ago.

Tom Cable said John Marshall is going to fix everything. I am expecting nothing from the front 7 except Howard and Ellis. Nnamdi will be himself and C.J should be a star and watching Branch develop should be fun.

Its about the offense in Oakland.

  264. Raider O Says:

They are showing the game again on NFLN at 1 pm.

  265. vegas raider Says:

Ellis is going to be good rushing the passer, but on the Dallas TD drive, Ellis was getting shoved around on the goalline by Witten, a freakin TE!! Our run D is going to rely on Kelly, Morrison and Howard to make the occassional play and pray like mad for holding calls.

  266. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Nnamdi21,

Can you explain to me how this “pass cover” defense is supposed to work in November and December?

Stopping the run is like eating your vegetables. You don’t like doing it…but the rewards to your health are great.

Here’s what I think is going on in Oakland. Al Davis believes in placing his investment in elite athletes. What are elite athletes to Davis….Exceptional speed and athleticsm.

Davis will always invest high draft picks in skill position players and the occassional outside linebacker.

He neglects the lines because he undervalues them. “Its just big guys…any big guy can play with proper coaching.” I bet you $1 that this is his philosophy.

  267. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Florida Pete, Charlie,

What ticks me off is that the Raiders recognized there was weakness at MLB, SLB and DT. But because these positions are undervalued…the Raiders decided to go to the flea market to decorate the house.

Bring in Franz Joseph, convert a TE to MLB…..that’s the answer for serving up competition at MLB

Bring in Desmond Bryant and Ryan Boschetti…..that’s the answer for serving up competition at DT

See, the Raiders don’t give a damn about the front 7. Never have and never will. They spent their money and time on bringing in TWO wide receivers another safety and some special teams players.

Its on John Marshall to make chicken salad out of……

  268. Raider O Says:

    S&B,

    Al doesn’t neglect the lines.
Gallery and Grove were our 1st 2 picks in that draft.
As for the Dline, we drafted Brayton in the 1st.

We have out skill guys, and now we need to improve our lines.

ITs the offense that gets me excited about this season.

The Raiders just have to tighten up the timing on those deep throws. For whatever reason, Russell is struggling with those throws.

Fortunately for the Raiders, Russell is doing well on the short and intermediate throws. Those are the most important for consistently moving the ball down the field.

Man, if the Raiders can hit on one or two 40+ throws a game….offense will be all good.

  279. vegas raider Says:

    SnB,

I think Russell has too much arm for some of those deep throws, the ball just flutters. His best use of his arm strength is when he zips those 15-20 lasers out there. On the deep balls, it just doesn’t seem like a fluid motion.

As a comparision, in baseball, pitchers that throw in the mid 90’s usually always struggle throwing the intentional balls when intentionally walking a guy. The will be all over the place because they struggle with throws that require 60% effort. Jamarcus can throw the ball 65+ yards, so he doesn’t know what to do when throwing a ball 45 yards with some touch. He may never be a great deep-ball thrower.

If he can zip those 15-20 yd lasers in tight spaces and hit the short passes with consistency….this offense, and Russell, will be ok.

As for the deep balls…you might be right. Hopefully Hackett can work with him on that…because the Raiders have some receivers that can get down the field

  284. HayesDaze37 Says:

I think Russell is just trying to pinpoint those deep throws more than he needs to. Put the deep ball in the right area, and let those guys go get it…every great deep-threat QB has guys who adjust to his ball, and JaMarcus should be no different. His WR’s need to be able to adjust on the fly (pun intended).

Dan Fouts was one of the worst “great” deep-ball-throwing QB’s I’ve ever seen in person, but his receivers were all ball-hawks. Now he, and a bunch of his receivers are in the HOF. Kurt Warner’s one of the most accurate QB’s of all time, but he also has Fitz and Q catching almost everything he throws their direction (like he had with Bruce/Holt, too). Montana had Rice and Taylor; Bradshaw had Stallworth and (gag) Swann — all adept deep route runners.

Every successful deep-throwing QB needs those kinds of targets. I think JaMarcus has his, and he just needs to start trusting that gun of his to get it out there…and trusting his guys to go and get it when he lets it loose.

Montana had Rice and Taylor; Bradshaw had Stallworth and (gag) Swann — all adept deep route runners.

Every successful deep-throwing QB needs those kinds of targets. I think JaMarcus has his, and he just needs to start trusting that gun of his to get it out there…and trusting his guys to go and get it when he lets it loose.

    it’s not something i had thought about…

but i think you are absolutely right…

receiver needs to go get it…

it would be awesome if they could work out the timing on it…

Vegas — I know a guy who played in some FFL in Vegas last year, and won a VIP WEEK ON AN ISLAND BEACH WITH NFL CHEERLEADERS DURING THEIR SWIMSUIT CALENDAR SHOOT.

    Hayez,

I’m out of the FFL loop bro can’t help much. I know they have some nation-wide contests and the FFL Super Bowl week is held out here and there is some crazy prizes. On a beach with cheerleaders, don’t know if I could get the wife to sign off on that one.
