Lynch says Brooks was to visit

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, August 15th, 2009 at 3:22 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Tom Cable declined to say whether any players had visited the Raiders during his conference call Friday evening, but needless to say we’ll be looking for new uniform numbers when practice starts in about 10 minutes.

Linebacker Morlon Greenwood was scheduled to visit, according to the National Football Post. In addition, safety John Lynch, while visiting the Bucs training camp, told the Pewter Report he believed Brooks was going to visit the Raiders Friday.

If true, the Raiders are either worried about the plantar fasciatis bothering Jon Alston or simply of the belief they need help at linebacker, where Thomas Howard is the only starter assured of retaining his position.

On his Web site, Brooks acknowledged a visit to New Orleans and said his agents were talking to the Raiders about a visit. There is indication when that site was updated.

Every one here is talkin shi about J Russ’s weight. Seriously people its not like hes a statue in the pocket. So if anyone has problems about his weight they need to tell me why.

He can move pretty fast for a big guy so all yo weight bashers here needs to give mea good explanation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. flowbees Says:

wow…why has kirk morrison fallen out of favor so suddenly? he never was a true mlb to begin with. he is still within the top 3 linebackers on the team, right?? put him back outside at very least.

  5. THREE RING CIRCUS Says:

Morrison needs to go back to the weak side and we need a bonifide MLB next year. a real run stuffer.

  6. Dmac20 Says:

See. Im telling you… Brandon spikes would be a good pick for us next year in the first round at middle linebacker. Secound round ‘d go D tackle, 3rd right tackle, and with the extra third we got from the pattsies get a guard to replace carlisle.

  7. RaiderRon Says:

Still want 2 know why Russells weight is an issue?

  8. Crude Earl Says:

Extra weight has a definite impact on a QB’s footwork and his ability to quickly make adjustments to square his shoulders and make accurate throws. It’s also hard to throw across your body when you can’t square up if you have extra weight.(a beer gut or baby fat in some of your cases).

  9. Dmac20 Says:

C’mon ron… Jamarcus looked big as a house on thursday. Even I noticed the weight. Its not hurting him to the point where he can’t perform, but it would only help his cause if he were in better shape don’t you think? Being a little more conditioned aint never hurt nobody…

  10. Norco Bob Says:

Morrison isnt very good, shouldnt be a starter by any means,..might be worth keeping for special teams.

  11. Norco Bob Says:

I saw Russell up close during warm ups,…wasnt fat at all,..however thats not his prob, his prob is the other quarterbacks on roster are better then he is.

  12. Dmac20 Says:

What do you guys think of ricky manning??? I thought he was pretty good with the panthers and bears… He dissapeared since then though.

  13. Norco Bob Says:

Ricky Manning?…ya he was once good,..now that he sucks he of course is on the Raiders radar.

  14. Dmac20 Says:

    LOL…

Either Gradkowski or Frye should start,..I like em both,..but would go with Frye.

  17. Norco Bob Says:

Raiders might shock the NFL in the next couple weeks, by cutting Russell,…I think its very possible.

  18. bladewalker Says:

    Ricky Manning Jr.’s total scum:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricky_Manning_Jr.

2006, Manning attacked Soroush Sabzi at Denny’s after teasing him for working on a laptop computer. Manning taunted the student with racial and homophobic queries. The student asked to be left alone and Manning and his pals beat him unconscious. Manning pled no contest to felony assault.

  19. Dmac20 Says:

Frye throws a good deep ball.Paul hackett is the man. He has the qb’s playing well. Looking at how our qb’s operate in the pocket, compared to how other qb’s opereate in the pockect (kyle orton), you can see he’s really coaching these guys up.

  20. jhill Says:

    OH MY F’ING GAWD !!!!

Langston Walker is playing LEFT TACKLE for the Bills. You guys better stay away from Trent Edwards, TO, and Lynch in your Fantasy Football leagues.

  21. 909RaiderLifer Says:

Ricky Manning Jr. is now wearing #28 for your Oakland Raiders……per, Jerry’s twitter thingy…

  22. Norco Bob Says:

dmac, hackett doesnt have russell looking good,…to me he looked real slow, almost like in slow motion,…the other two looked great.

  23. lefty12 Says:

no,Jhill,it just shows people getting paid to evaluate talent and coach in the NFL actually know more than people who make assessments on blogs.i know that is difficult to believe, but it is true!

  24. jhill Says:

    Lefty,

I’m actually watching him get Edwards killed. Watching him trying to move to pick up a stunt was hilarious. He has no business at LT. Too big and slow. RT, maybe, but certainly not for the $ Buffalo gave him. Don’t regret letting him go at all.

  25. jhill Says:

There we go, cover his arse up with a TE. They will HAVE to play a TE on his side, AND call a lot of running plays. On 2nd thought. Lynch might be a good option on your FFL team.

  27. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

Look at that, I was laughing so hard I couldn’t type straight.

  28. Dmac20 Says:

I believe jamarcus’s slowness has more to do with the extra pounds than it has to do with hackett. And I believe the raiders will cut jeff garcia because of the good play of the backups before they cut russel. He’s young and has room to grow… I mean j-russ is only 23 I doubt they give up on him that soon. I mean thats reaaaaly unrealistic.lol We’d have a better chance of seeing the raiders trading him for vick before cutting him.lol

  29. Norco Bob Says:

Limey,..evryone knows that if the Raiders werent on the hook for all those millions he would have been cut already,..but they are stuck with his sorry ass,…he sucks and so do you you limey bitch,…England sucks thats why we f*ckin left,..too many queers and the women are all ugly….oh and when you losers tried to get thic country from us we blew your limey heads off.

Back to football… I think ricky manning will be an upgrade over john bowie, jason horton, and justin miller in coverage. I don’t expect him to play like Nnam, but I think he’ll make and decent backup.

  65. Dmac20 Says:

I really believe garcia is going to get cut. With as good as gradkowski and frye looked, why keep garcia??? He hasn’t been practicing and we’re not sure how good he looks in a game. He shouldn’t be guaranteed a roster spot either. I say cut his dinosaur a**.lol

  66. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

    Hey Dorko!!!

You hand it out to enough people you hopeless piece of excrement.

  67. vegas raider Says:

    DMAC,

I was all for drafting Spikes this year, but last minute he went back to school, even though he would have easily been a 1st rounder. I bet he goes top 10 next year.

And I think “limey” is a derogatory term to Englanders due to so many dying to Lime disease awhile back. Learned that from “a Fish called Wanda”, lol.

Dorko is a total dirty kunt….. lol

  71. raideredoutL.A. Says:

imo, signing manning jr. may give nick miller a shot at making the team if they cut justin miller who is kr/db. nick would be a kr/wr 4 us. garcia better get going cuz gradkowski and frye look good so far. i honestly thought we’re set at LB, but with brooks or greenwood possibly signing may mean bad news 4 alston or brown or even possibly morrison.i’d concentrate on getting a DT and another safety since mitchell may have that hamstring linger.

  72. Demon Raider Says:

Kate Beckinsale, Keira Knightely…. Totally Banging…..

  73. Dmac20 Says:

Ooo.. Got cha. Thanks vegas raider. That’s an more insightful explanation than the one norco gave.

But you never know brandon just may fall lower… I never thought maulaluga would have slipped to the second and he did. So you never know… Lets just hope either way he becomes a member of our team.

Although NT Terrance Cody from Alabama maybe more of what we want…

  78. Demon Raider Says:

Manning Jr. is about 28 I think… He’s from my hometown actually…. Played football here at Edison high school

  79. Dmac20 Says:

Suh I believe will be a top ten for sure. You see the value dt’s have been getting lately. Raji, dorsey, ellis, and all those guys. People have been taking dts early lately. Suhs big and can move. Yea he’ll be a bronco, because I believe they’ll be picking first this year.lol

  80. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

  81. raideredoutL.A. Says:

Manning Jr. getting torched…Hey, he just got here…Jerry’s twitter…

  83. Dmac20 Says:

Sounds like mannings getting torched in practice right now.lol

  84. Demon Raider Says:

Lol. Right now, Suh is projected to go 15-20….. He’s like 6′4 295lbs.

Looks like his fantasy stock went up after his performance

  86. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

    I guess the Dorko left.

    Sorry Raider Nation.

I’ve been PO’d at that guy since he said it didn’t matter who got the #12.

  87. Dmac20 Says:

Oh well the scouting report I saw the other day had him rated top dt. So thats why I said that but yea… Hopefully we can get him too.lol

  88. Demon Raider Says:

Lol. I wouldn’t mind getting DE Greg Hardy in the first round next year… Ellis ain’t exactly a young player and the depth certainly wouldn’t hurt especially since Hardy’d likely be able to start right away….

  89. Dmac20 Says:

Honestly the raiders need help all across the line… Kelly??? No. Warren??? No. Trevor scott is a situational player. Jay richardson??? no Turd sands??? Helllllll No!!! So yea any D lineman would help whether he ba a dt or de, we need em.

  90. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Trying out Ricky Brown, Jon Alston and Kirk Morrison at the SLB and MLB positions….no one stands out so they keep switching them around

Brought in Franz Joseph for help

    Drafted Stryker Sulak for help

Tried to convert Chris O’Neill from Tight End to MLB

Now bringing in old vet linebackers for last minute tryouts

IF THE RAIDERS FELT THE LINEBACKING POSITIONS WERE OF NEED? WHY DID THEY NOT DO ANYTHING MEANINGFUL IN THE DRAFT?

Its like what someone in the NFL said…If you’ve got two players competing you probably don’t have any!

  91. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

    Hey Vegas:

That’s the Webster defintion of limey.

In this case, limey is something that happens to a Dorko.

    ———
I think when 17th century England sent ships around the world & sailors would develop scurvy which caused the legs to bow. They had a citrus deficiency. SOOOO they packed limes in their supplies. Nothing too bad to be offended by unless it evolved in to curse word I don’t know about. But then “you scurvy dog, aaaarrrrrggg” IS an insult.
    Narc0, your a scurvy dog!!!

The thing that make me worry with J-Russ is not that he lacks the skills to be a legit starting QB but that he simply lacks the motivation to perfect or harness those skills. You see flashes here and there but a guy who puts in that extra time fixes those little things that nag the big man! Hopefully that will come with age. alot of guys have got a boner for B Grad or Charlie right now but if thats our answer to our QB problems might as well cue Josh Mclown and we all know how that story ends

  96. Demon Raider Says:

That’s true. But I say give Kelly one more year. It usually takes 2 years to be 100% after knee surgery….

  97. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Ooops…Forgot the Raiders drafted Slade Norris.

Is he pushing these guys to start on week 1? Or is he going to be a reserve player.

The Raiders knew these glaring deficiencies. They should have tried to find a player in the draft that could have had a legit shot of being a day 1 starter at linebacker.

But nope. Took the cheap way out by bringing in undrafted free agents, unsigned veteran free agents and converting tight ends.

They KNEW this was a weakness and did nothing about it.

    Forget bringing in old veterans.

Tell John Marshall and his staff to coach these guys up! Its about the scheme right and Rob Ryan’s incompetence?

Forget free agents….Tell Marshall and company to coach their talented players up!

That’s all cool and everything….but we need STARTERS!

Morrison, Alston and Brown have to step up. Otherwise it will be more of the same.

You aren’t finding any good starters in free agency at this point. They are going to have to make a trade.

Maybe package up Fargas, Garcia and some draft picks and make a deal.

  105. Demon Raider Says:

Well Brinkley is a 270 MLB. lol. Also, I think the Brooks move may be more for his leadership and how he’d help out the younger guys than his play on the field. Although, I wouldn’t rule out him or Greenwood playing Mike and Morrison moving to over to Sam

  106. thetown Says:

Dont get me wrong 3 ring the kid had a legit year for what was pretty much his rookie season but the same things that bit him in the ass last year look to still be a problem. Inaccurate passing & slow progression scanning the field. I would not say that makes him a bust but you would think that would be top of mind coming into this season

  107. jhill Says:

I wonder why can’t Ekejubiah(sp?) step up and take the MLB spot? Seems like his STs skills should translate nicely to that spot.

That’s the problem right now…the Raiders need a bonnafide starter at a couple of key positions.

    =======================================================
Yeah…but there was starting caliber talent at those positions too.

Did we need TWO wide receivers given glaring gaps at TWO linebacker positions and defensive tackle?

Is Matt Shaughnessy going to start?

    THis team has gaps man.

And now the Raiders are looking for more duct tape to put over this thing.

Greenwood? Derrick Brooks? The Raiders should have ended the careers of Derrick Brooks and Jeff Garcia…yet we might just get them both.

Someone on that linebacking corps has to step up.

And we were told it was about coaching and scheme….

AGain, why looking for desperate help, with no injuries, this late into camp.

    Not good!

  112. Demon Raider Says:

Javon, O’ Neal, Ellis, and Aso have all been helping and guiding the younger players. It helps when you have a good vet to learn from and be mentored by.

It’s not really about looking for desperate help, but rather looking for the veteran presence that’ll help lead the young guys and help them to learn and play their positions better…. Javon, O’ Neal, Ellis, and Aso have all been helping and guiding the younger players. It helps when you have a good vet to learn from and be mentored by.
    ======================================================
Kirk Morrison has been in the league since 2005.

    Nnamdi Asomugha has been around

    Greg Ellis has been around…

Mentors and vets still have to be able to play. They might help here and there…but coaches coach and players play.

The Raiders are scrambling right now to find STARTERS.

They have plenty of depth at linebacker….

No need for apologies. Here’s my take on what you just said:

    1. Ellis was a push…they proactively responded to Burgess’ hold out. I think if Burgess was more positive, they would not have signed Ellis.

    2. Slade Norris and Stryker Sulak are not starter capable players…right now it appears from the outside that the Raiders are not entirely comfortable with the starting lineup at MLB/SLB

    3. I don’t think you are looking for a starter from the UFA pool

    4. Matt Shaughnessy was not drafted to start coming out of the gate. Trevor Scott, Greg Ellis/Burgess and Jay Richardson were penciled in for that role

    5. WR(s) – I like DHB and Murphy. But for a team with the other holes on defense AND the good feeling with Schilens and JLH….did we really need that 2nd wide receiver? I would have liked to have seen 1 receiver selected (whether 1st or 4th round) and the other towards a starter capable player at a position of need

    6. My concern now is that they are still bringing in veteran linebackers after a couple of weeks of camp. Not to replace someone from an unexpected injury…but to find a starter….I say starter because the Raiders have plenty of depth at linebacker now.

Those are my concerns Lefty. I don’t hate the Raiders and I would much rather be blogging about how dominant they are……By the way….I am very positive about the offense this year. Just very, very nervous about the defense right now.

  131. Raider O Says:

We need a DT, MLB, and an OT. You really can’t argue that!

  132. lefty12 Says:

you don’t know that about Norris.as you said they have players they think are capable starters.i don’t see the guys they are looking to bring in as starters either, more as depth.

  133. Raider O Says:

-Our DTs can penetrate, but can’t hold the point, or demand double teams.
-Our MLB kirk would be better at SAM, and we need a MLB.
-We need better OTs than Green, and to provide depth.

    IMO lol

  135. Raider O Says:

    Lefty,

Norris played well, and he showed that he is comfortable in space.

He is still a SAM, and we need a MLB!
We have 3 SAMS ( Kirk, Brown, and Norris), but we don’t have a true MLB!!

    Bring back Frantz!!

  136. lefty12 Says:

Kelly is double teamed almost every play and seems to hold his point of attack just fine.besides, our DTs are asked to penetrate, not just plug the middle.

  138. Raider O Says:

It hurts me to say that Kirk can’t play MLB ( I’m a huge Aztecs fan, and I told everyone he can be a PB), but the man CAN’T play MLB for us. He needs to play SAM.

    Go Aztecs!

  139. Thec07 Says:

  140. lefty12 Says:

Morrison was counted on to play MLB and it’s still too early to write both him and Brown off.by the end of the practice games the coaches will have things settled.

  141. Raider O Says:

    Kelly holds the point!!
I didn’t see Kelly do that. I saw Kelly penetrate, or get pushed back.

    no it’s not…

    31st against the run…

    and what were the problems???

the same farking problems we’ve had for 5 freaking years…

oh… let me mention that i posted the first raiders mock draft back in December…

2 DT’s in the first two rounds, and a beast backer in the 4th…

    i’m still liking my picks…

  146. lefty12 Says:

no offense Pete, but your Beast LB is 3 string on a team in need of LBs and weighs about 270.if he is such a beast, why hasn’t he seized the position in Minn.?that being said,he MIGHT be better than any MLB we have,we have to wait and see.

  147. Raider O Says:

I think Al is not happy With Stanford, CJ ?, and he may draft a CB next year.

The Raiders are just a more exciting team to watch. The offense is just more exciting. No wonder ppl historically love to watch them.

Watching the SD game. It will be interesting to see what our 1st team will do vs SD 1st team.

SD looks fundamentally sound but boring to watch. Rivers to Gates love fest continues. Thats the only player he’s throwing too. Did this guy ever learn how to use his WRs? (j/k).

  149. lefty12 Says:

O,there is nothing out there to substantiate that statement.i have a feeling AD isn’t panicking and jumping to conclusions after 1 practice game.i’m out, later guys.

  150. Terrapin Says:

“It will be interesting to see what our 1st team will do vs (Seattles) 1st team.”

Specifically its the right side of the line that really looks bad (TScott). I know some were expecting a lot from him but maybe its just not to be. JRich should start there this year and boost the position via acquisitions next year.

The pass rush could be a problem also. But the blitz could help alleviate some of that.

Vikings’ rookie Jasper Brinkley just brings it
Rookie linebacker hits ‘with attitude,’ Henderson says
    By Rick Alonzo
    ralonzo@pioneerpress.com
    Updated: 08/09/2009 11:54:56 PM CDT

MANKATO, Minn. — Vikings linebacker Jasper Brinkley pulled up at the last moment during a recent practice, sparing running back Antone Smith from a huge hit.

The Vikings weren’t wearing full pads, so Brinkley had to be careful not to hammer his teammate after he cut through the line into the backfield.

“We can unload on everybody else,” said, Brinkley the hard-hitting rookie linebacker who has raised eyebrows in training camp. “I want to take care of my teammates.”

Brinkley’s full-bore style can be dangerous for others, especially considering his massive frame. He’s listed at 6 feet 1, 252 pounds, which makes him the heaviest linebacker on the Vikings’ roster. He appears bigger and plays bigger, too. Brinkley hits like a dump truck rolling downhill out of control.

That’s a big part of the reason why he already is penciled in as E.J. Henderson’s backup at middle linebacker. Henderson likes Brinkley’s athleticism, instincts and play-making ability.

“And when he gets there, he gets there with attitude,” said Henderson, noting that he hasn’t seen any Vikings rookie hit as hard as Brinkley. “Not at linebacker, not since I came in here.”

If all goes well for the Vikings, Henderson will remain healthy coming off toe surgery and Brinkley won’t be needed much at linebacker this season, although he will likely be used on special teams.

It became clear that NFL teams can never have enough talent and depth at any position last season, when Henderson was sidelined the final 13 games, including the playoffs. His absence forced the Vikings to sign Dontarrious Thomas and Napoleon Harris for the season.

Searching for a better long-term backup, the Vikings drafted Brinkley in the fifth round of the April NFL draft. Defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier immediately made it clear he was expecting Brinkley to fill the backup role.

Brinkley hasn’t let the coaches down. The staff has “water-logged” him with information, and he’s adjusting well. Coach Brad Childress likes the rookie’s instincts.

“I think he’s got very good ’see-to-do,’ ” Childress said. “E.J. is probably the most instinctive. But he’s an instinctive player in there. He processes stuff immediately.

    “He’s a good football player.”

Brinkley’s body type isn’t that of a typical rookie. At 24, he’s the oldest member of the team’s five draft picks this year after finishing his college career as a fifth-year senior. He’s more mature physically than is expected from a first-year professional. He was granted a medical redshirt after suffering a season-ending knee injury his junior season.

It took time for Brinkley to drop the weight he had gained after his knee injury. But although he’s still a big man, now he’s in his best shape since his knee injury, a torn lateral collateral ligament in 2007.

When Jasper’s twin brother, Casper, saw him this summer, the change in his muscle tone was obvious.

“I was like, ‘You’ve got abs?’ ” said Casper, a defensive end hoping to the make the Carolina Panthers’ regular-season roster. “I was jealous.”

Jasper moves better than one would expect for a linebacker of his size. During Saturday’s practice, running back Ian Johnson ran around right end, and suddenly Brinkley was right there to meet him at the line of scrimmage.

After watching Brinkley in the offseason and training camp, Henderson likes what he sees.

“Definitely likes the contact,” Henderson said. “Definitely the type of middle linebacker we’re looking for. Definitely think he’ll be a starter in this league sometime soon.”

Exhibition games will reveal much more about Brinkley’s ability, starting with Friday night’s at Indianapolis.

Indications to this point are that the Vikings might have gotten a steal in the draft. Pro Football Weekly’s draft preview guide projected Brinkley as a third- or fourth-round pick. If hadn’t gotten injured in college, he might have gone higher than that.

In his first year at South Carolina, Brinkley led all Southeastern Conference linebackers with 107 tackles, including 14 1/2 for a loss.

Now Brinkley is trying to learn the playbook as fast as he can. For a role model, he needs to look no further than Henderson.

“I feel great playing behind a guy like that,” Brinkley said. “He’s going to be one of the greats to ever put this uniform on. I definitely try to mold my game to be exactly his. I try to imitate everything he does on the field.

  153. Thec07 Says:

I wish you didn’t post that article about Brinkley. That article read like a wish list of what the Raiders are looking for at the MLB and SLB positions.

Hard hitting, instinctive, downfield, dumptruck, “behind the line of scrimmage”

Meanwhile, the Raiders are rumored to be bringing in 30 something castoffs from other teams.

You have to commit to having a tough defense. The Raiders defense is all finesse and pass defense…unfortunately the pass defense suffers because the pass rush has been suspect.

Undersized, undermanned and easily pushed around at all points of attack. This has described the defense to date and by all signals…continues to define this defense.

Except for the part about the twin brother named Casper….I mean, if he is that good then he should be a starter instead of backup. He hits like a dumptruck and you don’t need that this year. Well I will get worked up over him when you NEED him. Until then, if he can’t help you then he can’t help us.

  181. 504 Raider Says:

Brooks had a good visit down here with the Saints last week but left town without an offer. That is good news for us if we want to get him. The Saints need a LB and did not sign him. Former 49er LB Derek Smith was working out for the Saints. He too left town without a deal.

  182. Florida Pete Says:

    yeah…

i say it’s even money that Mitchell even plays in the first half of this season…

that alone makes Brinkley the better bet…

oh, i say that Brinkley will be the starter before the year is out…

here’s the story on the 1st stringer:

On December 15, 2006, Henderson agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Vikings. The deal was reportedly worth over $25 million with $10 million guaranteed.

In April 2008, the Vikings signed Henderson’s younger brother, Erin, as an undrafted free agent out of Maryland.

Henderson was placed on season-ending injured reserve after he dislocated multiple toes on October 6, 2008 in a game against the Tennessee Titans.
