Cable: Morrison should be ready Week 1
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, August 23rd, 2009 at 6:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.
News and notes from Tom Cable’s conference call with Bay Area media:
– Linebacker Kirk Morrison’s elbow dislocation was described by Cable as “a two-week deal.”
Morrison was injured during the first series of Saturday night’s 21-20 loss to the 49ers. Cable said Morrison would definitely miss the New Orleans game and possible the preseason finale in Seattle, but would be ready for Week 1.
He also said Morrison was leader to start at middle linebacker at the time of the injury, so it’s anybody’s guess how that will affect his competition with Ricky Brown. Brown remains a candidate to start on the strong side, although it seems likely most of his reps will now be in the middle with Morrison out.
– Cable’s most important job this week will be shoring up the two areas that will have a huge say in whether the Raiders ascend to contention in the AFC West or are headed for another season of double-digit losses.
Expecting to be one of the top rushing teams in the AFC, the Raiders gained just 69 yards on 18 carries and 14 of those came on a Charlie Frye scramble for a touchdown.
And, of course, the 49ers shredded the Oakland run defense for 275 yards on 47 carries.
“I just thought we did a poor job of blocking in the run game,” Cable said. “Again, we didn’t run it a whole lot, but when we did, again I just thought we were too high, not the right fits with the helmets.”
As a result, offensive line coach Jim Michalczik will have some company this week in meetings and on the field.
“I’ll get (the pad level) down this week,” Cable said. “That’s just me putting some attention to it.”
– Sounds like the coach thinks the run defense issues had to do with attitude and a lot of guys having bad games on the same night.
“We had a lot of guys not play very well,” Cable said. “One, we have to do a better job adjusting to it as coaches, and then, two, I think you have to at some point set your jaw and decide you’re not going to get your rear-end kicked like that.”
Strong side lineabacker Slade Norris was identified as one of the players with tackling issues.
– Surprise! JaMarcus Russell will be the starting quarterback, barring an unforeseen disaster, when the Raiders open against San Diego.
“I said it was his job and we’ll see how it goes. Unfortunately, Jeff (Garcia) hasn’t seen as much work,” Cable said. “We’ve been fortunate JaMarcus has improved. I think he missed two throws that could have made for a really big night for him because one would have been for a touchdown for sure.
“He’s progressing the way you want him to. Not perfect yet, but I’d say at this point he’s the quarterback of the Oakland Raiders.”
Cable is happy to have Garcia back to give added incentive.
“It would have been nice to have someone really pushing him,” Cable said. “Maybe we could get him to improve a little more, and we’ll get to the next couple of weeks. It’s only halfway through the preseason.”
– When it comes to Javon Walker, it’s safe to stray from absolutes. Which is why Cable probably answered this way when asked if Walker’s scheduled practice Monday would go on as scheduled: “As far as we know, today, right now, yes.”
– The No. 3 quarterback battle between Bruce Gradkowski and Frye remains a dead heat two laps into a four-lap race.
“On one day it’s one guy, on one day it’s the next,” Cable said. “The next two games might decide it.”
– The Raiders have been pleasantly surprised by tight end Brandon Myers’ ability as a downfield receiver.
“There was kind of an unknown expectation,” Cable said. “He’s certainly proven he can do those things and that’s just who he is.”
– Cable wasn’t willing to brush aside Nick Miller’s fumbled punt as the act of a desperate rookie straining for extra yards in hopes of making the final 53.
“I don’t think you really get the benefit of the doubt when you turn the ball over,” Cable said. “He’ll learn from it, and we’ll move forward.”
– Cited by Cable as coming on include defensvie tackles Desmond Bryant and William Joseph. He also said Tommy Kelly was “much better” from Week 1 to Week 2.
– Players were off Sunday, and get an added bonus this week _ they’ll be off Tuesday as well.
The Raiders pracitce Monday at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and then have their final Napa training camp practice Thursday at 8:30 a.m.

I can’t even tie your dumb arse to a team little ricky. I can’t even think of a 49r fan who would say that Clemments wasn’t getting shredded. Would you prefer we just say that Clemments made a mistake? 3 different times? Do you like that better than shredded?

Rack-o-shit obviously didn’t see Clements get faked out of his shoes on a double move and then resort to blatantly grabbing the jersey and hanging on for dear life to prevent a TD.
He had too much of Crabtree’s cum in his eye to see that play.

August 23rd, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Raiders will never stop the run so no need worrying about it.
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:25 pm
No doubt Kelly was impressive, this kid Dez Bryant is extremely talented just very green.
Cable’s comments about Russell are disturbing. I think Cable has to keepin mind this kid was held back for a year and a half and he’s only had him a half year and a offseason. He just seems a bit impatient I know Russell can throw some balls that mak you wonder wha he was thinking but Cable needs to learn his player.
That’s who Russell is at times and until he matures Cable is going to see some of that. But when the game is on the line he will make plays. But I think cable wants him to be much more efficient and he’s not goint to do that when he’s dealing with rookies and second year players all around him. I gaurantee you he is a much better player now than he was 4 months ago. They just need to stay the course.
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:30 pm
You can tell cable unhappy with russells lack of progress.
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:30 pm

I should’ve used the words “resulting from other teams’ miscommunications” as opposed to “caused by.”
We caused the pressure last night, that resulted in Murphy’s TD.
It was not an accidental TD. Explaining it away as such is as illogical as explaining-away the Raiders run-stopping woes last night…neither claim holds water.
=====================================
“Caused the pressure”????
How so??
What led up to it?
Went from first and goal from where? The 7 or so..and went backwards..to now it was 3rd and goal from the 23 or so. Niners were easily defending Russell. he had zero completions to WR’s..again..all dumpoffs.
The fact that Clements assumed Roman took Murphy when he released him, and Roman missed it wasn’t anything the Raiders did, was it?
I mean, are you saying that Murphy, doing a routine stop and go, caused something??
Clements casually released him..and roman didn’t pick him up.
Nothing more, nothing less.
D blew it.
Granted, Russell made the throw, but hey..wide open? No one around him? Shouldn’t every qb make that throw?
Yes, you got a td..but you know it was a gift, and not earned.

FIRST OFF..YOU GOT SHIT ON, ON #130 on the previous thread..and the following is your rebuttal? ARE YOU SERIOUS?
# jhill Says:
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:06 pm
You’re right little ricky, it’s there for all to see, including you and your selective amnesia.
If you recall, you were getting slapped around so bad that you admitted you hadn’t even bothered to look up if Cable actually said he flipped the chair. LMFAO! That was your whole argument. That Cable was such a dumbass, he couldn’t even get his story straight.
Richochet: Again, weak ass reply to 130..selective diversion wandering, hoping it masks you looking the fool.
It didn’t. So, let me commence humbling your inept ass here.
Point was Cable stupidly stated “handling internally”
In other words, something DID HAPPEN, but he’s not going to discuss it..and “we’ll take care of it”.
After prodding he then got flustered and stated ‘NOTHING HAPPENED”..where comments were made, even alluded to AGAIN, in Sunday’s paper about “Which is it, Coach? First it’s being handled internally..then NOTHING happened..then ‘all the facts will come out”.
If NOTHING HAPPENED, HOW CAN THERE BE FACTS??”
And yes, hundreds of sites are commending on “Cable flipped the chair, and that’s how he got hurt.”
I simply stated I can’t be bothered to search whether or not he actually stated..see…THAT WAS ME THAT SAID THAT, clueless tool. No one asked me for a link..or questioned..was only AFTER I stated I could care less then, AND ONLY THEN you and the others who had ZERO TO SAY REGARDING THE REST ran with that weak retort.
In other words, you had no words.
And you’re easily..oh so easily..confused.
Like I said..you’re kind of slow..aren’t you?
——————————————-
You got blasted for “admitting” that you basically didn’t know what the F you were talking about. Then you “stepped away” for a minute and magically reappeared when I told another poster I constantly get you to say things like that.
Richochet: You’re like a child. You don’t get it, do you? First off, this sorryass site constantly doesn’t let you post..after a couple of ’slow down” messages, I wander elsewhere. Just not worth it to me to hang around..why does that confuse you?
And I left for like an hour, DUMBASS..not for a minute.
You saying you actually just stay here? Live for this board? Do nothing else?
I.E. LOSER?? Good one, Gomer.
BTW..regarding “You always get me to say things like that”??
lol..uh…shit for brains? That was when I exposed you as not even having a clue who I was..WHICH YOU ADMITTED.
Thanks for the setup, doofus.
—————————————
Now..let’s go back to where you, Jhill, got all pissy, and I stated you’re weak and meek, and that within a day you’ll be crying NO MAS..”go away..leave me alone..I’m done..I don’t want to post to you anymore”
TOOK LESS THAN A DAY..and yes..after you ran the ‘I’m done posting to you” I humbled your sorryass..embarrassed you..where you, as I KNEW YOU WOULD jumped to try and save face..where I got to laugh at you again, for taking the carrot.
Stellar moment, doofus, lol..
Like I said..like taking candy from a baby.
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:34 pm
He’s just not where THEY want him to be. Obviously. He looked better than both 49er QB’s. I think Cable is looking for more consistency, because at times Russell can be very impressive an then all of a sudden he’ll wiz one high and wide. Most young QB’s will look at Garcia’ wild throws Miller running wide open and he sails it over his head.
So I’m not sure what the issue is but it is disturbing.
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Talking about the td, fool. Obviously he grabbed and held..which is what a defender is supposed to do in that circumstance.
Hey..ONE RECEPTION TO A WR..means your qb’s ass was held in check..the whole time..and you got ONE reception to a WR, courtesy of a communication break down.
But hey..celebrate..lol..fool.

Oh…uh..how does those 280 yds rushing taste?

August 23rd, 2009 at 6:42 pm
I’m listening to it on Raiders.com and it’s a compleely different feel than Jerry’s blog. Cable said that Russell is progressing the way you want him to eventhough he missed two throws. He even said that the Raiders were FORTUNATE that Russell has imptroved the way he has because the running game didn’t show up.
Go to Raiders.com and you’ll see what I mean.
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:42 pm
TJ, explain please what difference it makes comparing russell to the niner qb`s,..how does that help the raiders?
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:43 pm
Nice of you to join us instead of talking to yourself on the last blog, clown.
Of course you thought you “made a statement” in post 130. Heck, in your mind, you were only gone an hour while I posted to you for 13 times minutes, an X-Ray of a broken jaw tells the story on how it happened, you think that people responding to your lunacy is stepping up, and a bunch of other non sense, and ending your own smack with damn I’m good is …. well I don’t know what you think that gay shyt is.
FACT of the matter is your stuck on stupid, and it is what it is.
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Its hard to tell with Cables comments but they are concerning at face value. Is he trying to push Russell through his comments or is something really wrong there?
Still, sometimes when you read something it sounds a lot more harsh vs when you listen to it or hear it. Listening to the call on Raiders.com it doesn’t sound nearly as harsh.
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Damn Priest you beat me to it! I had to listen for myself to not overreact. Like I said – between reading a listening/watching you can get a different feel. Its like reading a book and then going to see the movie of the book. Two totally different feels.

Norco Bob, the niners have a #1 overall pick in Smith and a wiley old vet in Hill and the young buck outplayed both. Doesn’t that indicate some degree of advancement? After all Shaun Hill is the consumate competitor isn’t he?
August 23rd, 2009 at 6:55 pm

Terrapinn the reason I had to listen to it was because it was a complete departure from what he’s said all offseason. Not to mention that Russell had a very decent game aside from two throws and if he completes those he’s probably 9 for 11 125 yards and 2 TD’s. In 20 minutes!!

People dont understand that if they win that first game they will win the division. It is the biggest game of the regular season. It will do a few things.
1.) Give the Raiders confidence against so called good teams for the upcoming season
2.) Let’s the Raiders know that they can do against an aggressive 3-4 scheme and a potent offense.
3.) Ends the long streak SD has had over the Raiders
4.) Sends SD into the long awaited Norvell tailspin.

Chargers pass defense just gets worse every year. Did anyone see how Merriman is a non factor rushing the QB now? Those roids are needed for his success. Someone for our team needs to make up the “Lights On” dance when we score a TD………hopefully
August 23rd, 2009 at 7:42 pm
Brien, sorry don’t know what to tell ya’ but I saw more of the same as last year. Guy’s not getting their fits. You can’t get outflanked like that.
For instance the very last play of the game was a perfect example. The OLB peeks inside and hesitates which allows the TE and FB to get out on him and seal the edge.
August 23rd, 2009 at 7:44 pm
7 wins might get it done, B

Bob,
The Chargers were a lucky 8-8 last year. I don’t think that you are suggesting if we beat the Chargers, we are now on the level of the top teams in the league, are you?
I think what is being said is that if we beat the Chargers, then we can win the division. Well in a division that can be won with 7 or 8 wins, what is that really saying?

For instance it was that human waste of space Sam Williams. You wonder why he will never start on this team or in the NFL again?
BHP, I disagree. It is the scheme and personnel. According to you we dont make the DT that lines up next tothe RDE play like a real NT. I believe you said 1 gap? I still dont see it since Sands wasnt a 1 gap DT when we signed him to that contract.
We are running the Al Davis defense plain and simple. Everyone knows you can pound the rock all day on us. You gotta ask yourself why Seattle didnt get gashed all day like that when Marshall was up that way. Let’s hope he hasn’t shown what the defense really has up their sleeve but I highly doubt it. I think we see this crap all year
August 23rd, 2009 at 7:55 pm
Jhill, how about Ladanian Tomlinson? The real LT was a crackhead who was the best defensive player ever with 2 title rings and wasnt a crybaby bitch. Dont disrespect the nickname he earned
Jhill, yes the Chargers were kinda lucky to go 8-8 but not really. We all knew Denver was garbage. The problem isthe Raiders should have been 8-8 last year. Kiffin/Cable were letting the wrong people start and it screwed the team outta wins
August 23rd, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Norco Bob, they all want us to hate Mr Davis, it’sbeen going on for years he doesn’t kiss their ass so they hate him. Then they make up all kinds of crap to see if we’ll jump all over Mr Davis like he does allow his DC’s to blitz. Which is really the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.
Jerry comes in here with some of the most ignorant crap and guy’s just eat it up. Truth is he just wants to see the Raiders win he’s not perfect but I’ve never heard a coach say he wouldn’t let me coach. NEVER!! yet that’s what every media member would like us to believe.
All these coaches come here JUST for the money all these years and every coach comes here and he wont let any of them coach.
YEAH RIGHT!!
August 23rd, 2009 at 7:57 pm
The key to the Charger game is turnovers and converting inside the redzone. The Raiders kill themselves everytime vs SD with that bullsh!t. I’m sick of seeing the team not score TDs in the redzone. That is part ofthe reason why I hate the ZBS. insidethe 20s it starts to become real weak and we dont have brutes on the o-line
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:00 pm
I hear ya brien,…little crybitches like jerry want us to agree with him,.if we dont then we are stupid and he bans us.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:01 pm
Brien, think about what your saying just read those comments and think about what you’re saying. Al Davis’s defense? Just what is Al Davis’s defense?? please tell me because I’ve been around this organization for years and I have yet to see it.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:01 pm
I can never hate Al but BHP, you mean to tell me the team wont run the same type of 4-3 we have seen the last couple of years? I still see the same BS that comes from that scheme in these last two games.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:04 pm
I’d say that’s the key to the season, Brien.
The stupid penalties in the RZ, and JRuss not turning the ball over.
I think the RZ issues also have a lot to do with Cable’s buck arse play calling!
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:05 pm
BHP, you dont ever remember Marshall about a month or two ago saying this is Al Davis’ defense? Wait wait wait, that was Nnamdi Asomugha who said that I believe
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:06 pm
Jhill of course offensively thats the key. Could you imagine if the Raiders were even half way decent inside the redzone what the record would have been in 2008? Also we know Farglass cant be in during redzone trips. Just wont work at all
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:07 pm
I think the raiders did better in the first half then the niners jamarcass threw a td and had no turn overs the niners ran well but if u don’t get 7 it don’t matter.but we do need to step our run game up.our d ends are good at putting pressure on qbs but just get ran over when they rush.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:09 pm
Cmon Priest, I think you’re trying to be too literal.
9 times outta 10, Hiram Eugene (like all FSs before him) will be the single deep safety.
8 outta 10 times you will see man to man coverage from the corners with the SS man up with the TE.
And probably 8/10 times you will see a 4 man line.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:10 pm
Jhill, that was funny!! getting knocked on your as is getting knocked on your ass. Self explanatory.
Not getting your fits is really simple if te play is a sweep and your the OLB you stay outside don’t let them outflank you you slide and penetrate then stack the play to frce the play back inside. Now as you do that the MLB has to do the same thing in unison to stay in his gap. If he hesitates it creates a natural hole.
Think of it like this, you have the defensive formation it all has to slide in unison. If you can shoot a gap and make a play even better but you must do it in YOUR gap.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:11 pm
Jhill what’s your point?
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:16 pm
I gotta run,..TJ when you callin Gary?
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:16 pm
Brien, 60% of the league is running this same defense. Most every team in the league is running either a 3/4 or a 4/3and some man mixed with a variety of zones. That’s nothing new…………that’s not Al Davis’s defense……….come on now.
That’s just what is common to the NFL. When nnamdi said that he means the COVERAGES not the front7. He’s saying that the Raiders (Al Davis) have always played man. So what more than 50% of the play man……where’s the mystery??
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:19 pm
Yeah Priest, I get it. I was just being a smartass.
It’s clear that we haven’t got the “playmaking” mentality of Rob Ryan out of our system. They seem to have a hard time “letting the play come to them”.
I guess that’s what I was talking about earlier Brien when I was saying why don’t we line up wider. It seems to me that the major problem is getting that outside shoulder of the on the edge. If Scott is uncovered, he should line up on the outside shoulder of the DE. If he is covered, the OLB should line up on the outside shoulder of the TE.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:22 pm
My point was that there are some things that are “unique” and “constant” with the Raiders defense. I agree with you that the coaches have A LOT of wiggle room if you will, and Al is certainly not calling the plays. But not too many people question that he has an “influence” on the defense.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:22 pm
Bob when do you want me to call him?
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:24 pm
When is Barnes due back? I cant stand to watch Cornell Green pose as a competent pass blocker anymore
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:28 pm
Was just watching the replay on NFLN. Man was that run defense looking bad! Most of the damage came around the ends. Both sides, but they wouldn’t let up off TScotts/Alston side, the right side.
TKelly played well.
Overall, as of right now I would say this defense is going to have a tough time vs the run all year. **But they will play better than in years past.***
Still changes have to be made.
Particularly, on the line they need another stout RDE that can hold his ground and bring the pressure. GWarren is too off and on. He’s good here, not so good there. But a bit of that can be a reflection of whos playing at his right. If TScott is getting blocked into him, it makes him look bad too. Still a more consistent DT won’t hurt. Not that that’s easy to find.
(nitpicking but they really need more attitude out there …it seems to be too ho-hum)

So 60 pct of the league primarily runs the vanilla D we have ran the last year? Come on BHP, Aso meant coverage and not the front 7? Well then what the fuk is this the QB must go down and go down hard sh!t? I have to pull up the article and read it again but I know Al Davis’ defensive is man coverage with 4 man rush all day and all night. Al wanted theteam to leave the 3-4 and run his version of the 4-3 a few years ago. Do you deny that or just say its Rob Ryan?

Terp, Warren sucks if he isnt playing the UT. I’m sick of this crap. Ron Brace was there in the second round and New England loves the guy. He is more versatile than they thought. Warren’s game is penetrating the gap solely and its undisciplined and leaves your UT(Kelly) out to dry. It’s a complete joke and will not work when we play the dominant o-lines. The left guard and center will have a day off in the run blocking game because the guy flat out sucks
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:37 pm
The Raider DT’s don’t stop the run, OR push the pocket.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Jerry,
Only catching the replay now on NFL-controled-TV. You wondered somewhere else in print where the 21 points Cable thought were left on the board in the first half were. The obvious one, as you stated, was the possession that ended up ending on downs at the four. The other two were:
1) The crossing pattern to DHB that Russell threw too far ahead and low. Hit him in stride, and he’s gone, there was no one in his way and no way Bly catches him.
2) The pass Garcia threw away in the area of Miller near the far sideline from cameras. No one between Miller and the EZ, and no one within 12-15 yards of him otherwise.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:38 pm
Brien, we were in a 3/4 on the 49ers first pass play.
Listen this damn blog is driving me crazy with this to quick crap.
When Mr Davis originally said that he was talking about Elway. And he did go down. But Brien that is an expression it’s not some decree from above. We have always and always will attack the QB. FRom my early days as Raider fan we blitzed and attacked the QB.
That is not talking about a specific defense at all.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:39 pm
Hell no the next game the Raider defense better wake the fuk up. New Orleans offense is one of the best in the league. They a have an abundance of weaponry for Drew Brees to play with. The D-line is the key. If you remember the game in New Orleans last season, Brees had all day to toss the ball. It was truly embarrassing

Yeah I saw them play a 3/4 on that pass play and they better stop with that idea through the season. We just dont have the personnel to run that alot

I see the 49er defense better than ours and we have a better offense. I see two evenly matched teams but one thing………..they are tougher than we are. It was plain as day. It pains me to say that but you have to call things for what they are and not what you want them to be
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:44 pm
Kell, what did you think of the game old man?
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:49 pm
The last Raider Defensive Coordinator to run his own Defense and have success was Willie Shaw, and Al Davis promptly got rid of his ass.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:51 pm
Gashed for 275 yds on the ground.
Justin Fargas stood up in the Red Zone, Again.
Nobody replaced Chaz Schiliens.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Our main concern for the chargers game has to be run defense. our second main concern is our ability to score in the redzone. Another big concern is converting on 3rd down. But our biggest concern is how many yards are we gonna give away because of penaltys??? .. We got to fix alot of things that has been going on these past 6, 7 years
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:53 pm
We will know who will win the game after the first 2 series .. we all know that.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:54 pm
And i agree this is the biggest game of the season, i swear if we get destroyed i dont think i can watch another raider game this season with any interest.
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:54 pm
Kell, that is not exactly true my old friend…………….That was Gruden that got rid of him. Remember who the players raised over their shoulders after they stopped KC from making the playoffs in 1999? The team gave up 38 damn points and Gruden got zero love. He resented that stuff and brought in sticks formation Bresnahan. Gruden had more stroke in Oakland than most know.
I know Kell you dont believe me but Willie Shaw and his entire family went to my church(as well as Lynn Swann’s father and mother) while I was growing up. Palma Ceia Baptist Church right in Hayward. I dont do the church stuff anymore now that I’m an adult but everyone knew it was Gruden cuz Brother Shaw let it be known
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:56 pm
Kell, how in the hell did you expect anyone to replace Schilens? No player has built that trust with Russell yet and you cant expect it in under a week
Don’t worry I bet you Schilens plays the SD game
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:57 pm
KENN, yes we have concerns. My biggest ones are actually how Satele will hold up against Jamal Williams and how Cornell Green will handle the different blitz packages on his side. Phillips is one helluva rush LB
August 23rd, 2009 at 8:59 pm
One thing Kell you have to like is how the pass blocking is leaps and bounds ahead of 2008 at this point in the preseason.
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:06 pm
I’ll take your word for it Brien.
As I recall Shaw turned the defense around, the next year he waas gone
The architect of the third-ranked defense in the NFL wears out yellow pads of paper. David Shaw remembers his father sitting on the living-room couch at all hours, diagramming plays as he watched television.
These days, the diagrams spring to life every Sunday. The Raiders are 4-2 and riding a three-game winning streak, mostly because of Willie Shaw’s resurgent defense.
Shaw’s impact extends beyond strategic chatter — beyond zone blitzes and stacked lines and quarterback-rattling pressure. He commands widespread respect in the locker room for the most fundamental of reasons.

I figured that assine response was coming.
Since he’s out of the league, I guess we didn’t have the 3rd rated defense under his command.
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:12 pm
The thing about Louis Murphy is he is VERY far along in his development as a receiver. Much further along than DHB. Murphy runs good routes, knows how to get open, and holds onto the ball for the most part. That comes from being coached by Urban Meyer and his staff.
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:14 pm
Well Kookie, you would think if it was him, not the players, he coached, maybe someone else would’ve given him a chance. They did. And it became completely obvious that his sticks defense had nothing to do with his suuccess. Then he went to selling cars. But only a moron would not know that.
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:16 pm
Mario I think will be a borderline pro bowler if he keeps it up and he is much better vs the run my friend. He still has work to do on that front. If Russell’s blindside is protected he may grow comfortable dropping back to pass.
When Schilens returns I believe Russell can look even better. He still concerns me. That first pass was awful and he needs to stop throwing off his back foot. Terrible fundamentals. I’m sure Hackett will remedy that

Nick Miller did have the fumble, but he also had one of the biggest plays of the preseason vs. Dallas. I’ve got to believe he’s a lock for the practice squad, at worst.
Don’t forget how much trouble JLH had holding onto the ball all the way through his 2nd preseason. Then he emerged as a borderline Pro Bowl return man during that 2nd season with not much trouble holding onto the ball.
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:25 pm
Kookie, why do you think we are OK with losing?? The difference between you and I is I KNOW, there is a lot more to winning than just wanting to. You don’t have any understanding of what it actually takes to win. Otherwise you wouldn’t post the crap you post over and over ad nauseum. That’s what the difference between the winners and losers of this blog. The losers of this blog like yourself and missed-a-brain, think you just line up and win. August 23rd, 2009 at 9:29 pm
I think JaMarcus is looking good. Really respect the job Paul Hackett is doing with him. If he continues to grow at this pace he’ll be a stud, top-5 QB by next season. The arm is unrivaled. Great, quick release. Decision making speed is tremendously increased. And he’s going through the progressions more and more. The accuracy is still inconsistent. The decision-making is not yet perfect. But he’s looking sharp for a QB just entering his 2nd year of play. I believe he’s actually slightly younger than both Flacco and Ryan, making him the youngest starting QB in the league right now (until Stafford and Sanchez start).
August 23rd, 2009 at 9:30 pm
Oakglenn, football is rather simple. Teams that run the ball well and stop the run are usually the better teams in he league. We have been inconsistent on that front. Other factors play into it but mainly those two areas are a problem. As much as we hype up the run game rankings the team is weak inside the 20. Until we prove we can run it in the red zone I will be critical of this team
As for the dline vs the run, its just past ridiculous now. You see the big runs developing instantly. We had chances to get real run stuffers and never bite on em. Something will have to change

——————————————————
It’s not that he turned a #30 defense to a number 5 in a year. That’s irrelevant, he has to sustain his success. His success was the result that no one had any track record on him, just like hitters or pitchers in the major leagues. Once they have a track record on tendencies, things become much more difficult. If Shaw turned a #30 defense into a number 5 than a number 6, than a number 3, and the Raiders got rid of him, you would be right. But that didn’t happen. Once his tendencies became obvious, he was ineffective.

you gave the response that everyone hates. Everyone that wants to win, says the Raiders are living in the past. We have to learn how to win now, in the modern NFL. And there is a LOT more to winning in the modern NFL than just wanting to, or knowing old Raiders. No disrespect intended.

Since you know so much about Modern Football, and winning, why don’t clue in Al Davis?

What you’ve proven, on this board, is that you get zero respect because you borderline on “head up ass” to “shit for brains”.
There is a reason for that.
Take my advice..do not ever try and discuss football, much less the Raiders.
You’re like a walking disaster.
don’t take it personal, but when you post, others actually seem to have a clue.
And no, not going to explain, again, the difference of a DB getting beat as compared to letting the receiver go by him.
BTW..no Raider fan should EVER, I mean EVER bring up “dumbass contracts”. The Raiders, especially Al, wrote the book on STUPIDEST SIGNINGS OF THE DECADE.
you don’t really want me to shove Kwame Harris, Javon Walker, Hall, Kelly, and Wilson down your throat..do you??

August 23rd, 2009 at 10:14 pm
Willie Shaw was with us for 2 years, and both years we went 8-8.
When chuck Bresnahan took over, then we started have winning seasons. We were 12-4 the first year, 10-6, 11-5, and 4-12 in his last year. ( not his fault IMO)
August 23rd, 2009 at 10:15 pm
Yeah to an extent you are right Bob. Getting Charlie did alot as well as the FA move to sign Eric Allen. Because our corners were so damn good we could blitz. But when Allen went down we couldnt anymore. How come Al wont use this sort of D again this season? We have the corners to do it.
MistaBrown……..that was JLH not DHB. But nonetheless he got smoked on that double move. That was about to be a TD for damn sure

He blitzed on first and second down leaving Bmore with a 3rd and 18. What formation did we use all year on 3rd and long? We used the sticks formation and it always worked. Why didnt he use it then? Because he was a dumb ass.
Also dont forget the fact Gruden’s dumb ass changed the game plan saturday night after working on 3 and 4 wr sets all year. Everyone knew that year that was the only way to mess with the ravens defense

Many cut and paste posts, and reply to them, because it makes it easier for everyone who’s scanning down to understand the progression, instead of referring to
a post number.
Why?
Why do you care?
If you want to jump back and forth, reading others posts, and the post their referring to, your choice.

August 24th, 2009 at 2:16 am
I liked the try 4 the 2 point conversion by Cable.I think he is and will continue 2B a very thorough head coach. So what we lost by 1 point, like he said we left 21 points on the field.I know it’s only pre-season but if you add the 21 Cable says we left on the field,we would have scored 41.Add the 31 vs. Dallas and it looks like the offence will be averaging more than the 17 we averaged last year.
August 24th, 2009 at 2:43 am
LOL. 4evaRaider is judging our offense based upon what Cable says should have happened, instead of what happened. So, we’re averaging 17 points more per game than last year. I mean, not really. It’s just that we should be! That’s awesome. We should be 16-0 this year, too. And that’s a huge improvement from last year. I’m going to get the special edition Raiders’ “Perfect” t shirt tomorrow.

August 24th, 2009 at 2:49 am
I’m starting to wonder if Cable is another Kiffin (good thing, btw!). I mean, unless Al Davis is the one who wanted Garcia and Gradkowski to go out there and put on a Rich Gannon west coast clinic. That and Cable knocking Hanson out, a guy who Kiffin had problems with too. I dunno. Let’s hope so. That would be great if Cable is trying to get Garcia and Gradkowski at the top of the depth chart. We could really move the chains and win some games, get back to WINNING Raider football again, as opposed to the Al Davis kind.
August 24th, 2009 at 2:52 am
Now it’s my turn to LOL…MR says Cable might be another Kiffin and thats a good thing, btw. You are talking about the 5-15 Kiffin arent you MR???

Let’s have a look at how our former defensive coordinator is bonding with his new fans….
************************************************
Posted by Dogpounder on 08/20/09 at 10:52PM
At least Green Bay knows how to correctly execute a 3-4 defense – that’s more than the Browns can say or show.
Oh wait a minute – we have the great Mr. Ryan formally the Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator as the Browns new defensive coordinator – his record with Oakland speaks for itself!
Adrian Peterson and Bret Favre are going to have a NFL record setting scoring day when the play the Browns on opening day!
August 24th, 2009 at 3:38 am
Corey Williams… 6′ 4″, 320 is not doing well in the 3-4…
go get him… Big Al… this guy can help us now…
oh… he already got his roster bonus…
get him, Al…
August 24th, 2009 at 3:42 am
Yep Pete it’s as easy as a b c…Sign Williams,cut Sands
August 24th, 2009 at 3:46 am
actually… we gotta trade for Williams…
that’ll be the hard part…
cutting Sands… won’t be easy…
it’ll be tough getting all those people out of the way that want to show him the door…
August 24th, 2009 at 3:48 am
yep…which might lead 2 more broken jaws =)
August 24th, 2009 at 5:33 am
Hey Pete and 4eva:
First of all, is Richochet gone? He must have grabbed someone’s jersey running past him, like Clements did against our receivers. I watched the game again on replay — we did a horrible job on the run, particularly sealing off the ends. Even so, we were leading 14-3 going into the third quarter. Mr. Coffee thinks he’s Mr. All-World now, and Cable may have to break a few more jaws, to get some peoples’ attention. I have said for the past week that we need to bring in Corey Williams – do it! pull the trigger! and let go of that big load of crap with the name “Sands” on the back of the shirt.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:57 am
Good Morning Nation!!!
Our run D needs a lot of help (again)…nothing will change until we get the players needed to stop the run…
Anyways, you got to love how people come in here talking crap on a pre-season game, huh? That TE Meyers made one hell of a catch between 2 defenders, though. I say he’s a keeper!
August 24th, 2009 at 5:59 am
Man it’s been so long since we were good, I might not be able to handle it!
GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!
August 24th, 2009 at 6:04 am
GOOD MORNING SPORT’S FAN’S. STOP THE RUN—RUSH THE PASSER..
August 24th, 2009 at 6:10 am
i honestly think Corey Williams would change the complexion of our entire defense…
having him enables us to put up a very strong line…
Kelly, Williams, Warren, Ellis…
how’s that for the staring d-line ???
williams not only helps stop the run… but he has good skills penetrating and going after the QB…
one caution though… he is not 3-4 player… he works well in a 4-3…
so visions of changing our base D would not work for him… a la Sapp…
August 24th, 2009 at 6:11 am
Pete:
Who cares about whether we change our base D next year! Let’s just pick up Corey and go with that front four of “Kelly, Williams, Warren, Ellis” for this year.
I LIKE IT!!
August 24th, 2009 at 6:13 am
Exactly Dirt Lot!!! But still, that game was ours to win, despite all that rushing yards. I didn’t see the first half. Why didn’t they score when they were on the 5?
BTW: Good Morning Dirt lot, 4eva, NMF, Tbone…

If you look at the play were JR looks like he stumbled and fell going back to pass, the announcer idiots never mentioned that the cause of it was DMAC tripping him as he was setting a block. Typical bias.

Stopping the run is a must….I hope Cable see’s this!!! Posting this weekend was horrible I couldnt get but two post all day!!!?!?!?!? It was like our run defense dismal!!either way our secondary is improvimg daily I like Brown he seems to be every where all the time!! Is N. Miller gone??? Nick is just a small player trying to really step up and make a play, to make the team. The fumble DID hurt his chances; but he’s getting a lot of good looks. If he doesn’t stick with Oakland, he may turn up in another uniform. I certainly wish him well!
August 24th, 2009 at 6:33 am
I am glad they went for it fourth down, in the red zone — why not? But I think it was a wrong call and not a very good throw by JRuss. Hey, did DHB even play? I thought I saw some player running around with the number 12 on his back, but I never heard his name called.
August 24th, 2009 at 6:40 am
LOL…that was DHB…..man at times he looks real raw!!! but you cant teach ssize and speed….welll you can train speed but thats different you have to have it to train it!!

Here’s something funny!!! With heavy emphasis on “The clipboard bowl..”
The Charlie Frye and Bruce Gradkowski battle for the No. 3 QB job is in a dead heat.
This wasn’t the quarterback competition that people predicted heading into Raiders camp. Jeff Garcia hasn’t pushed JaMarcus Russell at all. Meanwhile, there’s two games left in the Clipboard Bowl between Frye and Gradkowski.

Good Morning Raider Men!
Quick note before my Monday Morning meetings. It was sure funny and quite impressive to see JLH and Murphy beat the whiners best cover corner. I like the part about covering him like a rug or in Clements case grabbing on to any part of JLH uniform.
I guess JLH scared him so much the San Fran DC decided to play zone and a TD happened to Murphy.
Wasn’t Clements the guy doing all the trash talking last week, during the two a days. He is suppose to be their best corner and one time considered the best corner. I’ll take Chris Johnson anyday over that slow punk.
Let’s see, Clements $80 million dollar contract, Johnson $3 million per year.
Later.
August 24th, 2009 at 7:58 am
so our offense couldn’t run the ball, we couldn’t stop the run and our QB’s threw 3 INT’s and we still only lost by 1 point? Had that been a Janikowski XP instead of 2 pt conversion attempt or had we settled for a FG earlier in the game instead of going for it on 4th down we would have won. right?
up until the 4th quarter garbage players entered the game we pretty much had them by the throats?
thats what I get from reading about the game. is that what you guys saw from WATCHING the game?
also: Ricky Brown, Russell, Murphy, Myers and the pass protection were impressive
can someone please fill me in on the missing details?
August 24th, 2009 at 8:03 am
Not missing much RR…like I told the whiner fans that tried to talk trash to me (over a pre-season game) that until our 3rd and 4th stringers kinda messed things up, we were ahead 14-3 heading into the 4th! However, our run D needs HELP! Kudos to Brown, though!
August 24th, 2009 at 8:05 am
good morning OAKlifer. weekend was awesome
Friday night was “guys night out” guess you could say. saw GI Joe in theatres and ate at Buffalo Wild Wings. Saturday I was up on the roof with a bucket of tar. had some loose shingles after a huge storm last month. sprayed weed killer all over the property. had a 50 people cookout that night, burgers, hotdogs, brats, turkey legs, side dishes & desserts a mile down the tables, sweet tea, coffee, lemonade, etc. Sunday had church, big lunch, long nap and some good times with the MRS.
life is good my friend. how r u doing?
August 24th, 2009 at 8:10 am
has Richochet been in here yet to brag about the 49ers dominant performance?
LOL
August 24th, 2009 at 8:11 am
Oh yeah, he was here!!! JHill and others kinda ran him/her off though…
August 24th, 2009 at 8:16 am
Double R,
Thats a great take!!!
Had it been the regular season the Int would have set up A Bush or McFadden TD instead we ran fargas in to the line a couple times then went for it on fourht worse case scence a FG!!!
Then Mrphy had another oppertunity to catch a lazer on what appered to be a come back either way defender made a good break and ball was throwin hard incomplete… then JLH made clements look like a “DB” with a double move that would have been a fure sure TD but clemytime crabbed him and stoped him in his tracks…and on the Murph TD Niners where playin Cover two Clemmytime released Murph to Saftey who was picking aszzz whoola Jruss on a rope to the corner of the endzone Murh wide open!!!
LOTS of missed tackles….when Nnamdi is not on the field it is clear Brown is one of our besrt defenderes imho….
August 24th, 2009 at 8:18 am

He also said Morrison was leader to start at middle linebacker at the time of the injury, so it’s anybody’s guess how that will affect his competition with Ricky Brown. Brown remains a candidate to start on the strong side, although it seems likely most of his reps will now be in the middle with Morrison out.
***
Ricky Brown has shown leadership, been a tackling machine and he’s made plays in games (sack vs Dallas, INT vs San Fran) he’s making more money than Morrison this year. what else do we need to know?
Kirk Morrison is highly regarded around the league, believe it or not as a Top 10 MLB. huge Raider fan and professional. gets his tackles, always a positive attitude, etc.
If Brown outplays him, which David White and Jerry McDonald both point out repeatedly and Morrison still starts Week 1 at MLB can we assume the scholarship program is still alive & well in Oakland or should we assume that Brown is more valuable as backup MLB, SLB and ST guy than captain of the defense ???
August 24th, 2009 at 8:19 am
So does Priesttj and his followers have everyone convinced that our front 7 is above average?
August 24th, 2009 at 8:24 am
Jhill made arguments after Game 1 vs Dallas that it wasn’t the DT’s fault.
Our bad Run D was blamed on Morrison & Scott. Warren was doubled all game long. Kelly & Ellis weren’t even tested.
what happened this time around?
August 24th, 2009 at 8:25 am
That I couldn’t answer because I missed the first half…Cable dismisses it as players having bad games.
August 24th, 2009 at 8:27 am
McFadden….you let me down (although you didn’t much room to operate)! Now we will see double the Fargas carries in the first quarter opening night! I think you may have even tripped Russell!!! He looks awkward enough on his own, so you don’t need to further that stuff by getting in his way!
Way to go Murphy and JLH for causing havoc on the 49ers…
Shame on the defense…who cares if the 49ers couldn’t finish those drives…we still let them shred us on the ground, and a good team, like SD will finish those drives…gotta get that fixed! (well, I guess it has been that way for years, so I doubt anything will happen).
Not very impressive, but at least there were no season-ending injuries, so that is always a plus.
August 24th, 2009 at 8:30 am
I need to make a public apology to S&B Defense.
I saw highlights of the Packers game on SportsCenter.
BJ Raji is the NT in Green Bay’s 3-4 defense. He took on 2 and sometimes 3 defenders and absolutely destroyed them! he pushed them all back in the QB’s grill like it wasn’t even a challenge. I was shocked, especially considering the fact that he held out a month longer than DHB. The guy is a beast. Unless he’s like Sands and dominates 1 game and disappears the next, GB got a player.
I wanted Monroe 1st, then Crabtree 2nd when the Raiders were on the clock and was p1ssed we selected Heyward-Bey. I would have selected Raji over him.
I’ll probably get blasted for this because the draft was 4 months ago. I’m a little bitter. I still think Darrius will be an asset to the WR corps, but the way our run defense looks Raji would have been the smarter choice
August 24th, 2009 at 8:35 am
Cable dismisses it as players having bad games.
***
the problem wasn’t technique or gap discipline according to Cable – ok.
the problem was playing too high and tackling.
got 2 weeks to work on it, because I can see San Diego with 47 rushing attempts too. When’s the last time we shut down thier running game, before LT was drafted ???
August 24th, 2009 at 8:39 am
Tom Cable says:
“One, we have to do a better job adjusting to it as coaches, and then, two, I think you have to at some point set your jaw and decide you’re not going to get your rear-end kicked like that.”

Wassup folks?
It was more of the same RRS. The edge was getting handled, in a nutshell. It was mostly Alston not holding his edge, but in general, it was HORRIBLE play by the SLB. Alston abd Norris simply couldn’t shed ANY blocks, and there was no fill by the MLB or SS.
It was pretty much the same play they ran over and over, and it worked about a good 10 times.
August 24th, 2009 at 8:48 am
Morrison vs. Ricky Brown
Although Ricky Brown has made a few bigger plays I dont think he is better aginst the run. Morrison is a way better tackler and gets off blocks better, but Brown is a much better blitzer. They both bring a completely different game. Too bad we cant have a combination of both at MLB.
There is nothing worng with depth especially with Morrison out for a few weeks. With our deficiencies against the run I think we have to stick with Morrison as the starter. They shound bring in Brown on obvious passing downs.
August 24th, 2009 at 8:52 am
Jhill: so you’re saying Ellis, Kelly & Warren more than held thier own while Alston, Norris, Brown & Branch didn’t get the job done ???
August 24th, 2009 at 8:54 am
tay: thanks for the insight brother
1 vote for Capt Kirk!
August 24th, 2009 at 8:54 am
I thought Brown and Branch had good games overall.
But specifically talking about defending those running plays, you have to wonder where the fill was from the MLB or SS. Especially the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th time they called the same play.
August 24th, 2009 at 8:57 am
Lou Piniella should be waterboarded.
August 24th, 2009 at 8:58 am
Someone PLZ explain to me why T. Scott is still starting. For the 2nd wk in a row teams have absolutely abused him. Unless its 3rd an 20 he should NOT be on the field. I think Jay Richardson is much better at defending the run.
August 24th, 2009 at 8:59 am
Kelly and Ellis were not the issue, and Warren was a big factor putting pressure on the pocket.
I have to agree with your public apology to SnB.
Raji looked damn good. The way TK is playing? Those 2 would be a damn good tandem.
But we would still have Scott and Alston on the edge.
August 24th, 2009 at 9:01 am
true enough. If Ricky Brown was the captain of the defense he should recognized the play call and been there to stop it. Same goes for Branch if he was down in the box rather than centerfield or on TE duty …
the problem here is this: did we know they were going to run it (that same play again) and still couldn’t stop them or were we just too stupid to recognize the same formation and reacted too slow, as if we’d never defended the play before on a previous series ???
Either way, it’s bad!
August 24th, 2009 at 9:02 am
The 9ers were killing us with a power sweep. You cant blame that on Kelly or Warren. The LBs need to fill those gaps.
August 24th, 2009 at 9:04 am
But we would still have Scott and Alston on the edge.
***
Jhill: gotta have “Raider speed” . you know that!
August 24th, 2009 at 9:05 am
With that said, I still like the DHB pick and what it’s bringing to the offense. There is no doubt that the Safeties are paying attention to our DHBs speed which is opening up things for everyone else. That was clearly not the case last year. The corners barely had to pay attention to our WRs last year, let alone leaving a S back there. I guess if the crystal ball was working and we knew we could get a talent like Murphy in the 4th rd, then …..
August 24th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Of course Im rooting for DHB and Mitchell, but if we could have selected just one DT in the first two rounds. Baji in the 1st or Brace in the 2nd we’d all feel a lot better.

I’m encouraged because imo the season depends on the progression of JaMarcus Russell. we’ll only go as far as his arm leads us. He’s been impressive in the first 2 preseason games. not outstanding, but better than last season

3200 passing yards, 20 TD’s and fewer fumbles

He’s still suspect to me. I didn’t like that he wasn’t hitting the WR’s. Seemed like he’s still lost out there. But from what jerry’s been writing there has been some improvement. Still throws high… He is going to get our receivers killed if he doesn’t learn some touch.

“3200 passing yards, 20 TD’s and fewer fumbles”
But we will still be in the bottom of the league with regards to run defense. I predict 25th – 27th which will be an improvement over last year but still not good enough to be a .500 ball club.

Someone PLZ explain to me why T. Scott is still starting. For the 2nd wk in a row teams have absolutely abused him. Unless its 3rd an 20 he should NOT be on the field. I think Jay Richardson is much better at defending the run.
********************
Yeah but Richardson isnt a RDE. He is a LDE hence being better against the run. The Raiders have no other option except Scott at RDE. Your right DE has to be a better pass rusher if anything. He is usually the lighter end

we will still be in the bottom of the league with regards to run defense. I predict 25th – 27th which will be an improvement over last year
***
silver: I agree, but hope that’s not the case
something needs to change:
-personnel
-Al Davis’ philosophy to build from the outside-in
-Al Davis’ philosophy of choosing speed over production
-termination of the scholarship program
probably all of the above. At least John Marshall has experience as a DC and experience in the 4-3 defense. If we get gashed vs. the run in the 1st half of a ballgame hopefully he’ll be smart enough to change things up in the 2nd half.
I want to see more pressure on the QB, including the blitz. Also want to see the prevent defense thrown out of the defensive gameplanning all together. interchangable safeties program also a failed experiment

Dakota:
This is my assessment of this team. Take it for what it’s worth, as it’s only my opinion.
1. Defensive line: As a whole unit, I’d say (average) – an exact “C” grade. I think like last year, they will often dominate on 1st & 2nd down, only to melt down on 3rd down. If Kelly & Warren finally decide to play on every down, that can change. But, until I see it, I still have my concerns about this unit. I really like Ellis, and I really like Scott, but, I hope Scott isn’t Tyler Brayton all over again (great motor, but, just can’t play every down).
2. Linebackers: (Above average) – can be great if our D-tackles perform. But, if they’re stuck matched up against massive O-linemen all season long again, we’ll have problems. They still need a massive run-stuffing middle linebacker, so that they can move Morrison to the outside.
3. Defensive backfield – (Average) – Best cornerback duo in the game. As for safeties, I’m very worried. This could be the worst 2 safeties in the NFL. The potential talent is there, but, at this point, it’s just potential. And I can’t base my opinion on potential right now.
4. Quarterback. (Above average) I think J-Russ is going to be a star in this league, and comparing his first 20 games in the league with P. Manning, Aikman, Elway & Steve Young, he’s actually out-performed them on most levels. Not saying he’s going to be a hall-of-famer, but, he’s definitely on his way to being a franchise guy.
5. Running backs – (Way above average) Top-5 in the league. 3 great backs that each bring something unique to the table. Oren O’Neil is, when healthy, hands down the best fullback in football.
6. Tight-End – (Way above average) Love Miller. He’s going to be a star. Myers looks good as well.
7. O-Line – (Average) – I really like the left side with Henderson & Gallery. The center is an unknown at this point. I hate the right side. Carlyle is a good player, but, may be on the down-turn. Green may be the worst tackle in football. Let’s pray for Barnes’ return.
8. Receivers (Above average). I know I’m being hypocritical here, but, I’m basing this one on potential that I really believe will come to fruition. I think Schilens is going to be a monster. And call me stupid, but, I really believe Walker is going to have a 1200 yard season. JLH & Nick Miller make the perfect slot receivers. Heyward Bey will be a good-looking receiver in 2 years. Murphy may be ready to contribute right away. I think this is a group that will prove to excel, especially in 2010.
9. Special Teams (Way above average) – this may be the best unit in the league, in all areas.
So, . . . . .if you add all that up, I think that spells a 7-9 season at worst, and a 9-7 season at best.
I’d love better, but, that’s realistically all I expect for this year.
Next year will need to be 10-6 with a playoff victory.
In 2011, they should be at least contending for a Superbowl berth.

The Raider run D will be somewhere in the 20s but I believe the pass defense will be great and create many turnovers. Chris Johnson will have about 6-7 INTs because no one wants any of Nnamdi
August 24th, 2009 at 10:10 am
I don’t think anyone will have to pass if they can run over us all day.
August 24th, 2009 at 10:10 am
Dirty at first people thought it was gonna be a 2 month injury now its 4-6 weeks. I think he comes back sooner than most think. If he plays the Chargers defense is in trouble. That pass D in daygo is terrible
August 24th, 2009 at 10:11 am
I think that spells a 7-9 season at worst, and a 9-7 season at best.
***
I agree Smac.
“Oren O’Neil is, when healthy, hands down the best fullback in football.”
thats the only thing I question. OO is still unproven over the course of a 16 game NFL season. Justin Griffith was our starter the past 2 years. Luke Lawton became the starter after he went down and is still on the roster. O’Neal still isn’t 100 percent healthy.
We’ll see.
Still think the RB trio is “Way above average” regardless though. nice job

El Dirty teams will be able to run but all day wont happen all 16 games. Eventually Marshall will make some correct defensive play calls and the teams will be forced to pass. If our offense even averages 21 points per game teams will have to pass

This N.O. will be interesting. I know Marshall will have a plan to try and rattle Brees. No way you can just rush him with 4. I see Scott getting some QB pressures in this game. He looked better against the 49ers rushing especially on those stunts. Nice to see the Raiders finally do that but will they the whole season?
August 24th, 2009 at 10:21 am

August 24th, 2009 at 10:23 am
Raider O, how was your night with the idiotic twin combo of Richochet and RaiderRhonda?
August 24th, 2009 at 10:26 am
Smac,
Good points.
In my opinion, I think the WRs are average or below average…until DHB shows us why he was drafted. Murphy looks good now, but many WRs have looked good for the Raiders in the preseason and disappeared in the regular season, so I need to see it first. Chaz is out. Walker is a loser.
The d-line is below average IMO exactly because Warren and Kelly don’t bring it every game. And Scott at RDE is a disaster against the run.
QB-a little below average until he gets his pass comp % up to 60-63% and shows that he can put some touch on screen passes…which he looks like he might have improved on a little, but not proven yet, and until he can start hitting those deep routes to DHB.
LBers- I don’t know, I tend to give them a break because of the front 4 not occupying more blockers…but Morrison can’t shed a block to save his life…average?
Coaching: HC-Far below average…Cable would never have been considered for a HC position anywhere else. Rest of staff-maybe average?
If everything went right, and the AFC West is as bad as it seems to be, then maybe 8-8. Of course, everything never goes right for the Raiders and you can never guarantee wins vs rivals like KC and Denver…right now, I think we will be 6-10.

“In fact, Bolt would likely shame anyone else who’s ever competed. After reviewing 20-meter splits from the world championships, ESPN track and field reporter Larry Rawson declared that Bolt would run an NFL-style 40-yard dash in … well, in an absurd time. Almost inconceivably low. Way less than four seconds. You can listen to Rawson right here. These were his comments:
LR: “Forty yards, if he was being hand-timed by a scout and reacting to his movement – not electronically timed the way they do it [in track and field] – his 40-yard dash on a track, in spikes, would be 3.73 seconds.”
Host: [Laughter] “He would run a sub four-second 40-yard dash?”
LR: “Listen, I did the math as though it was electronically timed, which it’s not for football – electronically timed – and it came out to 3.97 seconds.”
You’ll recall that Oakland recently gave a five-year, $38 million contract to Darrius Heyward-Bey(notes) based largely on the fact that he was the fastest receiver in his draft class. He ran a 4.30.”

Are you on a first name basis with AL?
_________________________________________
Because I am on a first name basis with Al, and a trusted member of this blog, he asked me to once again post this statement ahead of the 2009 season to reassure the Nation that an insurgency such as the one that took place about one year ago by the Nation Collective, will not be pose a danger to his control of the franchise:
Dearest loyal members of the Raider Nation,
Although I view the current plot to remove me from power as nothing more than a weak gesture, I want to assure you that I have taken precautions in the event that these disloyal fanatics, that call themselves the Nation Collective, pose an actual threat. I do this simply for security and for the peace of mind of the members of my Loyal Raider Nation, not out of fear, because I have feared nothing in my glorious lifetime.
I have established two trusts that will consolidate my holdings of the Raiders and allow me complete control of the franchise forever. Your comments to Priest over the weekend was good read. I agree with both of you, but the bootom line is results. I’m in a business that’s result based, to continue to see no change or results to be based on improvement, usually gets you back to starting point.

I’m not going to bother doing a “paste” on Comment #427.
I’ll just say this – T.O.? Are you f#$&ing kidding me?
He would do sit-ups in the driveway of the Napa Marriott, catch 3-4 passes against the 9ers in preseason, talk smack about the Eagles and get lit up like a Christmas tree, cry like a baby when people start talking about “My Quarterback”, then turn right around and start blaming JRuss and Z. Miller for not including him in the game plan. Cable would have to kill him.
I’m glad we’ll never have to see that puss in Silver and Black!

I stand by the TO move … Dakota’s list is accurate.

I was at the game and saw the guys in limited reps.
DHB has a ways to go, he seems to be thinking out there and not reacting, the whiners did pay attention to him, usually rolled a safety to his side.
Murphy is the draft choice steal, he has the smarts and runs great routes and understands the passing game.
JLh is strictly a slot receiver, requires open space , slot receiver must adapt to zone coverages and find the open windows.
John Holland is very intriguing, first year on IR, last year on the practice squad, has gotten bigger and is still fast, his way on the roster is special teams, and I didn’t see any real bust there or anything great.
Walker is a question mark, who knows what he brings, let’s see what he does the next week or two.
Miller may make the 53 man roster, can play the slot and is a good back up to the punt and kick off return teams.
Watkins is out, so is Bayes,Franklin, Parker.
Chaz will make the roster, the question is do they carry only two tightends to keep Miller, we shall see.
August 24th, 2009 at 11:36 am
If the 49ers had any brains they would have left DHB open all day and let him rack up 10 catches, 175 yards and three TDs against them…
…then they could have gone back to the table with Crabtree and told him there, that’s why DHB deserves more money than YOU!
August 24th, 2009 at 11:37 am
On draft day, my D.C. Nation was trying to convince me that we were going to pick Macklin, as I cotninued to scream for either Monroe or Raji. We were all wrong — now, I am just hoping that speed really does rule and that Mitchell isn’t going to turn out to be a disaster — I would hate to see us flush the first two picks — particularly after Huff and Mr. Fabian!

Marcel Reese can play tight end, he has the strength and speed for the position. His ability to get downfield is better than Stewart, Stewart may be a better blocker. Special teams both are equal.

Lawton was a starter last year and did pretty well toward the end there. Stewart has been drawing RAVE reviews from White & McDonald all offseason, not just as a blocker, but as a threat in the receiving game as well. solid ST contributer and NFLPA rep
Give me Lawton & Stewart.

I may not have time to watch the games, but I can finish by next fall sem. 1 year and I can be done.
Wish me luck, I will need it this time. lol

I was pulling for Rankin, also looks like he “may” make the practice squad….
August 24th, 2009 at 11:57 am
RRS
The question is depending how they want to go regarding the depth at WR, do they carry 6, or five and If they carry 6 wr’s what other position on offense is reduced, TE or RB. Luke Lawton is a good player, but Reece has more options and upside. Stewart is a good player, but Stewart role will be reduced due to the emergence of Myers, and what I can see Myers can block, it seems even better than Miller.
August 24th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
That catch by Myers in traffic was a work of art. He took the big hit and still held on. Not sure we want to put him on the practice squad.
G Russell we picked up. Not as an FB but a RB. He played with the steelers last year. Camp fodder?

**********************************************
Brien,
What I said is that the POTENTIAL talent at safety is there, but, that’s all it is right now – Potential.
I’m with you – I really like what I see in Branch right now.
But think about it – we’re going into the season with a complete unknown in Branch, and Eugine is really just a good back-up.
Mitchell could, in time, turn into a Ronnie Lott.
Or he could easily end up being another Derrick Gibson.
(Remember how Gibson was supposed to be the next great hitting safety?)
And as for Huff, this is his last chance.
So basically. . . .
I feel nervous as hell about our safety position going into the season!!!
That’s going to be the first place San Diego attacks on Monday night. And I hope we have an answer for that.
I really wish we could have signed Dawkins. He’s exactly what we needed on this team.

Dell: here’s my beef with Reece
I know that he’s a better receiving option out of the backfield than Lawton is. I know that Myers will likely steal the show as #2 TE.
Reece is 3 inches taller than Lawton – same weight (240 lbs). However, he’s not a lead blocker. He’s not the guy you want in front of your prized possessions (DMC & Bush) to open up holes and drop the hammer on a LB or DB … Lawton certainly isn’t the best in the business or he’d be starting elsewhere. I’m not 100 percent sold on Oren O’Neal’s health and ability to be durable throughout a 16 Week NFL season after such a devastating injury. He still isn’t practicing more than once a day and hollered out in pain, having to leave the field last week in our scrimmage vs the 49ers. something isn’t right. I’d like to have a backup plan for OO. If our passing game relies that heavily on dumpoffs to the FB we’re in trouble. Line up M Bush at FB on a passing play and let him rumble.
I like Stewart as a 3rd TE over Nick Miller or Johnny Holland as a 6th WR. call me crazy

Cable said that technique and gap discipline were the issues with the run defense – problems that could be fixed by adding coaches who were “good teachers”
now after being gashed vs the run the past 2 games he says the problems are tackling and pad level.
He went on record to the media saying that we have personnel on the roster good enough to stop the run. He put his neck on the line for this group of misfits.
I just hope we don’t have to hear excuse after excuse for reasons this D-Line can’t get the job done and stuff another team’s running game. otherwise Cable might find himself out of a job – even if he does find a way out of this legal mess regarding Randy Hanson

YO YO YO RR, Oakifer, BSJ what’s good fellas! I just wanted to chime in, I agree im starting to like what I see in bryant especially over sands, let me ask you guys im sure I wasn’t the only one who seen how far back the 49er dbs were playing off of our recievers they were scared for sure, and Clements still got beat by JLH off that double move after playing 10 yards off. I think part of russell not getting any passes to our Wrs was because the routes are to deep and the were doubling DHB nearly the whole game that’s why the middle was sooo open. Do you think we are just having them run longer routes to kinda see how other things will open up before we hit the with the dink and donk? What’s ur take guys. Because remember with our glory days with gannon, we absoutely dominated with the dink and donk offense….bait them dbs and safetys to play closer to the line and then burn them up top . That’s what I think we need to do.

The problem this year will be the FREAKIN RUN DEFENSE HATERS!
Wake up!
August 24th, 2009 at 1:37 pm
DBW: whats up man? welcome
I don’t know about the dink & dunk offense with Russell at QB. He has a huge arm, but struggles with those short to medium range passes. Jeff Garcia would be our QB if we rolled out this type of offense and he’s old and washed up. We’ll take advantage of Russell’s arm and the speed at WR. Every WR we’ve got is lightening quick besides maybe Walker because of the injury history. The deep threat and Zach Miller in the middle should keep defenses honest. Just hope Russell’s accuracy is there and the WR’s have sure hands. Our offense has a chance to be good this year and great next year (get some o-line help)

Space Raiders: Astronaut Packs Flag
Bay Area Astronaut Says He’ll Represent Raider Nation
POSTED: 1:07 pm PDT August 24, 2009
UPDATED: 1:23 pm PDT August 24, 2009
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Raider Nation will be represented in space later this week when NASA astronaut Jose Hernandez, a longtime Oakland Raiders fan, blasts off on the Space Shuttle Discovery from Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Hernandez, a Bay Area native, said he will take a Raiders flag with him during the Space Shuttle Discovery mission to deliver equipment and supplies to the International Space Station, according to the team.
The launch is scheduled for Tuesday at 1:36 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The shuttle will return Sept. 6.
Hernandez will be honored by the team and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers as a role model for the Hispanic community during the Raiders-Broncos game Sept. 27.

Corey Williams (if cut) will get a pretty decent contract someplace else in a 4-3 defense.
He didn’t fit in Cleveland, because they run a 3-4.
It’s not like he totally bombed and will play for peanuts in his next deal.
Al Davis and Co. are happy with Kelly & Warren, etc. Sands will be cut. Boschetti, Joseph & Bryant will fight for the other 2 DT spots …

525. The mentality that all Californian’s have in their heads about guns need to be removed. We have a God given right to own guns. You don’t need further permission from a state government for what’s given to you at birth.
It’s called live free or die!
I choose to live free. I choose to carry. I choose to protect myself and my family against any criminal that makes the mistake of seeing me or my family as potential targets.
So I will have 15 round mags for my Glock 22. I will have 30 round mags for my AR-15. I will carry concealed and I won’t ask the state of California for permission. It is my right under the Second Amendment.
And if by chance one day, God willing it never happens, I am placed in a position where my life or the life of others are in danger, I will utilize this wonderful tool of freedom without a second thought, because I choose to live free. Knowing I won’t be a victim when some crazy person decides to go on a shooting spree in a mall where I am shopping or end up dead in the street when because some car-jacker chose my car provides me with the sense of freedom that come from piece of mind that my fate always lies in my hands, which no man can nor should be allowed to ever “grant you” the permission to have.
I fully enjoy life liberty and the pursuit of happiness and I encourage you all to do the same.
In the words of the late Charlton Heston.
“As we set out this year to defeat the divisive forces that would take freedom away, I want to say those words again for everyone within the sound of my voice to hear and to heed, and especially for you, Mr. Gore: ‘From my cold, dead hands!”

id say 7-9 is a good year for us
August 24th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Best way to fix the rushing defense is for us to becaome a high scoring machine and force other teams to abandon the run for the pass. Score early and just be relentless with an attacking style of play and then pound the ball and control the clock and keep the D off the field. I know, easier said than done. Heal fast Chaz… Has anyone heard if walker has been activated or not?

Stallworth was remorsful and owned up form the moment it happened. There was no intent. Also, although minor, the victim was not in a crosswalk. IIf he had been it would have been different.
Plax brought an unregistered handgun to a public place and palyed with it willfully endangering the lives of everyone in the club and tried to decieve the athorities.

August 24th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
RaiderRobG, here’s why most Americans think people like you are whacko. How often does someone shoot an entire mall up? How many car jacks even happen anymore? What is this, 1993? I hardly even hear that phrase “carjack” anymore, except from red neck gun enthusiasts. Is that what’s going on in the trailer parks? It’s not your right to own a gun that anyone has a problem with. It’s your obsession with guns, and your longing to use one, that prompts people to keep an eye on you. And the government is going to answer that demand. Yes, you have your right. But the world is what it is and if you’re walking around with an assault rifle and yelling a bunch of radical right wing nonsense, you might get your little toy taken from you. Most Americans think that’s just common sense. I know it crushes against the constitution, but oh well.

________________________________________
Yes. 1) State laws differ 2) gun laws in NY are tough because of the problems with crime, therefore they treat the intentional violation of those laws very harshly, 3) Mayor Bloomberg demanded Plax be made an example of, 4) the victim in the Stallworth manslaughter case contributed to his own death by running into the middle of the road to catch a bus and was not in the crosswalk, 5) it would have been very difficult to prove in a court of law that Stallworth’s ability to avoid the accident had been impaired by his use of alcohol (BAC of only .126, barely over the old legal limit), whereas Plax’s case was open and shut, thereby giving defense counsel more leverage in plea negotiations, 6) Stallworth stopped and immediately called the police, and cooperated fully, and took full responsibility.
That’s it in a nutshell.
August 24th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
7-9 WTF?
Dude come on:
Easy. 4 wins against KC and Denver.
The Texans? Please! That’s five.
Sanchez if from USC but that ain’t gonna do it. There’s six.
Bungels. Seven.
Washington has no QB. Eight.
Cleveland is in a sorry state. Nine.
Don’t call Flacco the next Peyton Manning yet this game is 50/50 in my book which means right there is the possibility of ten.
And if I want to further stretch it. I can theorize the Norv turn effect giving us one more win. Which is eleven.
Realistically I see us as a 9-7, maybe a 10-6, and a miracle at 11-5.
August 24th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Raider Rob – we have problems with the Texans. That is not a gimmie by any means. Isee a .500 year for us but i don’t think the dolts are going to be much better than .500 either. Agree on all others though.
August 24th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
BTW, RaiderRobG, I agree with you a bout Plax’ sentence vs. Stallworths. Drunk driving should be a felony punishable by at least a year in prison, even if you don’t kill anyone. If you kill anyone, as stallworth did, it should be treated just as if he used a gun. It was no accident. He stepped into a deadly machine and operated it while under the influence of alcohol. He’s a killer, plain and simple.

Question is anyone that is logged in still getting the posting too fast error?
August 24th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
The Raiders can go 12-4 this year if Cable moves Garcia and Gradkowski to the top of the depth chart. Trade Russell. Just forget him. Al has to just swallow his pride for once. Notice how whenever Al swallow’s his pride and sacrifices control, voila, we win? Just like 1998. Russel can only throw the deep ball and in today’s NFL you have to do so much more than that. I’m sorry. It’s just a fact.
August 24th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Sorry guys, San Diego is too talented to go 8-8 or 9-7….they win at least 10 games this year and win the division.
We might go anywhere from 6-10 to 8-8, depending on if we handle our business with KC and Denver. We are fighting for 2nd place in the division…I doubt we contend for a wild card spot, even at 8-8.

Then we should cut him, Thec. I was trying to be nice by saying we should trade him. If your goal is to nail me on a contradiction or something, you win. Got me. You win the argument. But the bottom line is that we have two quarterbacks on our depth chart far better than Russell, at least in regards to operating an offense in the modern day NFL. They’ve got nothing no Russell’s cannon. I’ll give him that. But they can move the chains in this league in a way that Russell was just never schooled to do in high school or college ball. What’s whacko is that most people like you have been conditioned over time to think that gun ownership in and of itself is a bad thing and that persons citing the constitution are nutty. You’re out of touch with your nations history bubb, that a disgrace.
FYI, dude! I don’t go toting my AR-15 around shopping malls looking for trouble. (I actually use one in my everyday job.) But I am completely comfortable minding my own business in the produce isle knowing my glock sits comfortably at my hip while looking for avocados that are soft but not too soft, Mangos, Plantains and Plumbs with the red on the inside. And I enjoy the comfort that comes from knowing if a home invasion happens, said intruder will be met with #4 buck, followed by oo buck and no mercy. Also, it takes that one time that you say hardly ever happens any more, for you to be unarmed in a time of crisis.
And carjackings and mall shootings never happen anymore? What rock do you live under friendo?

What cracks me up about the gun nuts is their blind eye to so many dangers that already are threatening their families. Let’s start with their diets. Type 2 diabetes. If their goal is to protect their children, I wish they were as paranoid about their kids weight and the food they eat as they were about a black president. Obama’s not taking your kids to Arby’s every night. You are. And as far as the threat of someone shooting your kids, notice how they always bring up crimes that blacks commit, and mostly in the ghettos. If you live in the suburbs, your kids are more likely to be shot by a white kid who brings his gun to school and wipes out the cafeteria than they are by a “carjacker”. I honestly don’t think a white person’s been carjacked since the ’90s. Total ’90s thing. I don’t want to pretend to be a gang expert but I’ve heard more than one person in the know say that the carjacking craze started when a cocaine drought hit. Once the cocaine came back, the carjackings stopped. Anyone with a better theory gets a cookie. Because there’s a lot of liberal whities with no gun anywhere near them driving around areas that border the ghetto, and nobody’s targeting them. Everybody’s slanging that yay again. Your precious little white kids are going to get shot by one of their classmates that got picked on too much, not by a black gang banger. And the odds of that even happening are practically zero. You want to protect your kids, lock the food cabinet.

Excuse me, but who’s bringing up the race card? If you’re going to have an intellectual discussion, stick to the topic, and do something about the diarrhea of the mouth.
We’re talking guns, and my own belief that it is the means by which I choose to protect my family, my home, and my castle if you will.
I am not of the illusion that I can be all places at all times but that being said, my family is well protected.
If you want to argue diets. I don’t take my kids to fast food. They don’t eat processed food loaded with chemicals and artificial unknown substances. So we are in agreement on the shitty quality of food, and think it’s a bad thing that parents choose to feed their kids garbage.
Same difference. Choose what you feed your family, choose how you protect them. Bottom line, there’s the beauty of our representative government. Choice.
You make yours and I’ll make mine.
I choose guns and great grub.

Did anyone notice we are 3rd in the league for PF? There is a lot of good in Raiderland, critics be dammed, we’re just sorting them out. BTW, Raiders are favored by 7 over SD in the first week in NY. Haters will love this!

I’m thinking it’s only pre-season and not showing all the cards. Who the F are the 9ers! lol. We made them look stupid, they did have more heart to win a pre-game, but we learned a lot about where we are at, and will plug the holes, IMHO.

You guys need to pull your heads out of your ass and realize there’s a difference between state and federal gun laws. The Feds aren’t going to be beating down my door to enforce a states law. NOTE what I said…to enforce state law.
California can take it’s gun regulations and it stick up up there ass.
People get confused a lot when they think about having in gun in California. California requires a federal background check and to have your hand guns registered. It’s not a federal requirement to have your guns registered that’s just crazy fascist California law.
In any case. My choice will always be to be judged by twelve than carried by six.

We have a very good, young team. Guy’s its only PRE season, things do happen, much is learned, you do not show your cards at the table. We need to get behind our players, stop the bickering, close up together and put on the Raider show. This is just a run through, the season awaits, we will win the WEST!

I guess Ricky Brown is not going to just get handed the job.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
It would be cool if he could get in there at MLB and slide Brown back to OLB.
Alston and Norris were incredibly bad this weekend, and we could really use Brown back at that spot.

Especially if we are going to stick with Scott at RDE. We need to move Brown back to SLB, and shore up the MLB spot. might not be the answer, but we certainly can’t stand pat.

August 24th, 2009 at 4:36 pm
Jay Richards is the last person I want at RDE. He is in his perfect spot as a backup LDE.
I’d like to see what Shaugnessy can do.
Outside of that, Scott better be a full time project for Board. He shouldn’t be getting tossed around like he has been. It’s ridiculous.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
Scott is light and then you want some heavy fuker like Richardson back at RDE. Yeah I remember how the run D fared when he started at RDE. It was still garbage. Scott is your best bet at RDE. Bryant,Shaughnessy or Richardson would be an even bigger disaster. You guys love to hold out hope for Russell but yet dont wanna give this guy a fair shake. Funny but mark my words you will see what I mean later on in the year. He gives us the beast chance to rattle a LT during a game. The other guys wouldn’t do shhhhhhhhhhit

What happened with Scott he got pushed around. Not stong or heavy enough…
Rattling is prob good on passing downs but on running plays he gets blown up period.
Also Scott doesnt cost us 65 mil, we have to give JRUSS time, with scott we need to find someone to plug in. Not sure we are talking apple to oranges…..
August 24th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
Trevor Scott is your best chance against the LEFT TACKLE. No one else unless its Ellis can do that job. Ellis is too valuable at LDE to move
August 24th, 2009 at 4:43 pm
I understand the cost of the two is very different but he deserves a chance. Do you guys even know how he will fare throughout 60 minutes of a game? His athletic ability will be vital for the Raiders pass rush. You put any of the other scrubs out there then you are in big doo doo
August 24th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
How big is ellis?
August 24th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
I use to see Jay richardson’s big ass get pummeled like Scott has in the run game so whats the big problem?
August 24th, 2009 at 4:45 pm
The only time I’ve seen Trevor Scott anywhere near the QB is when we run our stunts. Other than that, he’s been handled rather easily from what I’ve seen. I was REALLY hoping he was the answer but he hasn’t given ANY signs that he is the answer. And believe me I am looking for signs.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:46 pm
Ellis is listed at 265 and Scott is about 10 lbs lighter. Scott’s pass rushing ability demands he be on the field considering who we have on the roster at DE
August 24th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
I don’t think one person has suggested Jay Richards at RDE. He is absolutely not the answer.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:47 pm
Jhill, let’s see how his quickness wears on a LT thoughout an entire game. I bet you will be screaming something else mid way point in the season. You have no one else to play RDE
August 24th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
T Scott too light in the britches…. not the full time answer IMHO….. If its not someone on our squad we need to hit the waiver wire, or trade garcia, fargas, and who ever else….. No way Scott is the answer.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Oh Jhill come on. You better read the last few did fixes by Jerry. People have suggested Richardson, Shaughnessy and even Desmond Bryant
August 24th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Will this be his wake up call? He can perform?
August 24th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Yeah well Dwaine Board,John Marshall and Tom Cable truly see otherwise. If not then he wouldnt have been penciled as the starter at RDE sincethe summer. You have your best pass rusher at RDE. Just you guys wait when we play SD. Scott is gonna get a hold of Rivers hicktown hillbilly ass
August 24th, 2009 at 4:50 pm
Brien,
Like I said, I want the kid to be the answer. I said so ALL off season. Whatever you are talking about with the pass rush, of which I agree, he has arguably been the worst person on the field defending the run. I hope Board can correct it pretty quickly. If not, lets see what the rookie can do.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Our current run D is predicated on the hope that either Tommy Kelly blows up his man and makes a play, or one of LB’s guess right and make tackle close to the LOS. Or lucking into a holding call.
Other than that, it comes down to whether or not Hiram Eugene is going to make the tackle and stop the run at about 15-20 yards. Complete recipe for disaster.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:52 pm
It is funny but you guys tell me to be patient with Russell….which he doesnt deserve, but a guy who was drafted inthe 6th round as a long shot to make the team leads us in sacks and now has been switched to the other side gets no love over two preseason games. Hilarious

What part of him getting run on, using the same play is “hilarious”……
August 24th, 2009 at 4:54 pm
Actually VR my friend it cant be predicated on the UT to blow up the run. That is crazy. The NT has to be able to shed the blocks of the LG and C. All run defense in the 4-3 depend heavily on the guy who plays NT to blow up the plays. The UT aka Kelly is the pass rushing DT
August 24th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
Are you really comparing the QB position to RDE?
And JRuss, by your own admission, is playing well.
No one is saying cut Trevor Scott. Just saying maybe he needs to be put back in the position that he was so successful in last year.
Or that he simply needs to stop getting pancaked by the other teams TEs.
August 24th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
What part of Warren sucking as the NT dont you guys get? Outside of the garbage scheme, Warren is the main culprit. This is why guys like SnB wanted to draft a run stuffer so bad. We all recognize this guy aint it. He is strictly a pass rusher

August 24th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
I have wanted a run stuffer for the last 2 years…
The last 2 years we could have gotten a supreame being, but no we draft skill.

QB looks up sees scott at RDE audible to run…
August 24th, 2009 at 4:59 pm
I still find it rather interesting no one has even commented answered my question about Scott actually making a damn good play vs the run against Dallas. We all know against the run is he weakness. Hell he even said it!!! BUt you cant demote a guy at RDE for run defense whenthe other guys on the roster cant even rush the passer. come on guys
August 24th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Ok Thec and when he sees the other clowns he will audible to pass
August 24th, 2009 at 5:01 pm
What I don’t understand is why Warren getting doubled would be any different from the NT of your choice getting doubled?
Fact of the matter has been that Warren is getting doubled, and Scott has being handled by the TE.
Kinda leads back to where is Alston or the S help, but Scott should be able to get off the TE, or should I say stay upright against a TE. He should win that matchup more often than not and it hasn’t been happening.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
Okay Brien he did make a good play against dalass, not hating on the guy, the niner game was awful.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
DVR’d the game. Little eye-cathcers… Caught one of those sweep rights real good that came Ellis’ way. Alston really screwed the pouch. I was flabbergasted, bewildered as to what the hell he was thinking. He ran right into the pile up and didn’t stay in his lane! He had the angle. The run would’ve still gained positive yardage because the oline blockers was ahead of the dline but not as much as Coffee actually gained if Alston stayed in his lane. Coffee gained +10yds (i think).
Next run left at TScott and Alston …TSott gets turned around inside and Alston again ran straight into the blocker taking himself out the play, instead of going kamikaze in the hole. (Maybe I give him a slight pass on this one b/c that could’ve been his duty on that play. But thats stretching it. He has to recognize that he had to opportunity to at least slow that play down for the cavalry to come. Coffee gains +20yds).
Next big run Raiders went 3-4. They flooded the right side. THoward was in the right spot but played the hole wrong. He went outside rush and should’ve gone inside. He would’ve met him in the hole for loss yds to no gain. Write that off to preseason – no game planning no film study.
Next 6 yd play at TScotts side again. They’re just lined up wrong for that play.
A lot of this boils down to just smarter football. Then lack of strength at certain position. They just wouldn’t let off that right side of the defense.

I would like to see them move Kelly back out to RDE and let Bryant and Boschetti see if they can be part of the rotation inside. Bring Scott in on passing downs.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:05 pm
But Brien Ellis is rather light too for a LDE. So measure TScott by his stardard isn’t proper.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
I’m all for seeing what he can do with Brown at SLB, and a decent MLB.
But Alston and Scott next to each other won’t work, and Brown next to Scott with Morrison in the middle won’t work either.
Oh well, I guess it’s like you said, we’re just going to suck against the run this year. Hope we can score some points!
August 24th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
whats up nation brothers
August 24th, 2009 at 5:08 pm
Brien,
You know better on the whole UT/NT thing than me. All I know, is that I see Kelly getting off the ball, getting some pressure and moving around his blocker and trying to make a play, with some success, albeit , not enough. The few times we stop a running play in the backfield, he always seems to be involved.
I see everyone else on the other teams O-line getting their way with our guys. TE’s handling our ends. Warren may be getting double-teamed, but he is getting shoved 5-6 yards down the field. LB’s taking bad angles and missing occasional tackles. Just bad news.

When Javon not on field, has intern throwing him balls.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
I’ve suggested JRich. I know he’s not perfect but at least he can stay up! He’s the most logical option on run downs because he’s been there last year.
I’m not so high on Matt …you’re right Brien, his pass rush sucks …I was not impressed …buy I’m not going to be too quick to judge. Still, at least he can hold his ground. I’ve seen TScott “on the ground” way too much.
I’m not hatin’ on TScott but you just can’t keep him in there on run downs. You can’t go in the season like that. He’s getting handled out there. No push. Flattened by TEs. Thats not what you want vs the run.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Oh Lord ..here comes Garcia …turn off ..I’ve seen enough of that game.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Manning Jr cut??
He was one of few players that actually filled a running lane against the Niners and made a stick to stuff the run!
Should cut Bowie ahead of Manning Jr.
Freakin weird.
I’m telling you guys the move that needs to be done on the D-Line, is to move Kelly to RDE, especially on 1st downs and 2nd downs and then move Boschetti in to replace him at his UT position. That means the front seven would be LDE Ellis, DT Warren UT Boschetti, RDE Kelly.
That beefs up that front and should make it bigger and stronger against the run. Then on 3rd downs and obvious passing downs. Get Scott in there at RDE.
They should also look to put Scott as a standup roving SAM in some instances as well.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:30 pm
Kelly is too big to play RDE. He’s like 320+ now. When he played RDE he was 290. He’ll have to go on Slim Fast + + to lose all that weight. Just not an option.
August 24th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
I was embaressed by are inability to stop the run Sat. not to metion watching the game with some niner fans (family)but I believe alot of that stuff was outside we got good push up the middle but linebackers were always in the wrong place Warren&Kelly did not look to bad seen them in backfield alot also Nap pick-up may be good hope not because Kirk is more serious then reported The linebacker we picked up from Texans seemed to be tobe flying around

cuz harris was longtime news. but i don’t know why people are upset. dude was pretty good with our last superbowl team back in ‘02 and he was productive in that season. If he returns to that form its a major upgrade. he can also play SAM.

Sorry guys. I know I will catch flack for posting this. Tell me in all honesty whether we have ANYONE that has done this. Also a comment about pad level at end of video clip.

Someone who’s opinion Al respects should tell him to start drafting football players instead of track stars.

Lol..uh..you “hope” he see’s this?
The whole planet see’s it.
280 yds says even a blind monkee can see it.
Then again, Cable doesn’t seem to be all that bright.
Maybe you should text him, and ask him to check out this blog?

LOL…that was DHB…..man at times he looks real raw!!! but you cant teach ssize and speed….welll you can train speed but thats different you have to have it to train it!!

Interesting.
Seems someone else has been saying something to the tune of “He’s fast. But he runs bad routes. Has trouble catching the ball. But whoop dee do, he’s fast. Waste of a #7 on someone who, WHILE IN COLLEGE, has a history of bobbling balls, dropping balls, and running crap routes.
Oh yeah. That was me who said that.
Let me say it again.
Niners have a player holding out, who was, without a doubt, the #1 receiver in the country. When he signs, he’ll continue doing what he did in college, which is run great routes, and catch balls.
Raiders have a player who signed immediately, knowing he was the #3 receiver in the draft, and got #1 receiver money, who continues to do what he did in college, which is basically very little.
I think I like the Niners option at this moment, don’t you?
August 24th, 2009 at 7:16 pm
NT-UT whatever. The DT’s on the Raiders don’t do a damned thing.
They don’t stop the run, they don’t push the pocket.
August 24th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
Anyone knows if Frantz Joseph signed on with anyone else. The biggest problem on our D is the inability to get off the block. It has been this issue for many many years.
August 24th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
I agree with KK and that is freaking rare!!

Why is it that DHB get’s a starting job handed to him, and DMac has to “earn his”?
August 24th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
id rather see DHB start in the preseason than i would anyone else. Wouldnt be happy if he was the starter opening day, but starting in the preseason hopefully will bring him up to speed faster.
August 24th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
come on Jerry make with the fix..
August 24th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
See rack-o-shit there are two problems with your “theories.” Problem A is the Whiners have NO ONE to THROW the rock to Craptree. Did you actually watch the game??? Alex Smith looked like the biggest POS on earth out there, what was he 3 for 9 for THIRTY YARDS AND A PICK!!! and Shaun Hill was only very marginally better. I’m sure once Craptree saw who was tossing the rock to him, he went FURTHER into hiding!!!
Which brings up Problem B: Craptree is UNSIGNABLE!! It makes no difference if this guy is 9 times better than Jerry Rice. If he doesn’t sign, which hold on here, let’s look again….yup, hasn’t signed, then who gives a flying fook what he can do?? He ISN’T GOING TO SIGN! I told you three weeks ago, that’s why Davis passed on him. But then again, YOU were the one that said when first round prospects come in and meet with prospective teams they exchange cookie recipes, not talk money, structure, guarantees and the like. But, why would teams want talk money with these guys??? They are only going to invest $30-100mm in one guy?? Why talk about that?? What a moron.

Because “Jivin” Walker is not ready yet and Johnnie Lee is best in the slot. Now that Shilens is gone, DHB is going to HAVE TO Step up. Has to.

Oakglen, can you complete a post with name calling? How old are you for real? If you’re 12 I get it I wont question you, but you aren’t 12 right?
Craptree? rack o shit?
August 24th, 2009 at 7:51 pm
Did Cable announce starters ?
DHB hasnt been handed anything. He doesnt have much in front of him 2 begin with. DMAC would have replaced Fargas last year if it wasn’t for turf toe.
August 24th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
Yes, but DHB was given a job before Chaz got hurt.
Justin Fargas has 698 career carries & 7 TD’s. Why is he given the ball at the goal line?
Gouged by the 49’s???????????????

Kookie don’t mistake the preseason for the regular season. That was one of the major differences between the Raiders and the Whiners in the last game. Cable has been trying all kinds of different things. And he should. It’s the preseason for crissakes! This is the time where you see what DHB can do against starting corners. What Trev Scott does with the ones. Start a different RB every game and see if one completely emerges. What Singletary did in the last game was run one play over and over and over. Not work on what was NOT working, which was his passing game. Oh no. Why work on that?? It’s the preseason. Just run that counter trey play that was a Joe Gibbs staple over and over and over and over.

“As to the Niner fiasco Saturday, the defensive scheme is the problem. They are doing what they did last year. I don’t think the playoffs or 2nd in the AFC west will be attainable this year. I am looking for 7 wins for a good year. Will be a LONG TIME before the Raiders are relevant with Al at the top.”
———————————————-
I’m so sick of reading crap like this from all these supposed “raider fans” especially on this site, do you rtards not realize that it is pre season? The Whiners scored 18 points in the 4qtr. when we had all our scrubs in, we went for it on 4th down 2 or 3 times and didn’t kick an ex point to tie the game back up. IT’s PRESEASON…. PRESEASON…PRESEASON, WE ARE TALKING ABOUT PRESEASON…. PRE——-SEASON.
August 24th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
And by rtards I am referring to everyone here who doesn’t know the difference between PRESEASON and REG. SEASON… AND everyone on here named Dakota and those who suck him off everytime he’s in here, raider fans used to not be pu**ies.

More good stuff about the run defense. Courtesy of Tom Cable.
** Rookie Slade Norris doesn’t sound like a strongside starter, not after Cable named him as one of those perimeter players who did not hold the edge against the run game Saturday.
Cable declined to name the others, but said there were others who played just plain awful.
“I thought we had some guys not play very well and a lot of it really was, I think two parts. One we have to do a better job adjusting to it as coaches, and then, two, I think you have to at some point set your jaw and decide you’re not going to get your rear-end kicked like that.”

KK- I think your not very smart if you really think that DHB was going to start this year over Chaz, I thought you were smarter then that, and then there was the GOUGED post, wow! Ya I guess our third and fourth stringers should be pretty embarrassed of themselves, ohhh who cares they won’t be here after two weeks anyway.

I have two kids, let’s call them A and B. Both know basic math, addition and sudtraction. (A) has to learn math all the way to calculus and (B) needs to learn math up to say algebra I. They both need to reach their goals in the same period of time. Say 3 years.
Who has the tougher task A or B?
Anyone can answer.

^^^^^^Exactly…..stupid on Singeltarys part to not work on different plays…..then again….I don’t think Marshall showed as many looks as he could have either.
