By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, August 25th, 2009 at 6:10 pm in Oakland Raiders.
A relatively minor transaction to report _ the Raiders have waived CB Jason Horton, hobbled of late by turf toe, and claimed DT Joe Cohen.

Looking for DT’s off the scrap heap?
They better try and sign every broken down DT than get their hands on.

El Dirty,
Was Elvis lying? The warden didn’t throw a party in the county jail?
August 25th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Now we decide to go after tackles. It is like showing up to the outlet mall in January when everything is sold out looking for a deal.
Wow, how typical!

Priest & his left b00b Oakglen will be in later tonight to explain how Cohen is a future hall of famer with tremendous upside.

Seriously, does anyone know anything about Cohen.
Jerry how about a lil more news then a simple cut and paste from the Transcation page.
1. Who did he play for?
2. Has he had any descent year?
3. Where did he to School? What RD was he drafted?
I realize he is probably a lil scrub, but can you atleast cut and paste a lil more. Is that askin too much??
August 25th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Cohen
Neg:
plays laterally and struggles redirecting to ball carriers. Not fast to the sidelines…..worthless wont be able to stop teams that are consistently running sweeps down our throats……7-9
August 25th, 2009 at 7:21 pm
Miller can very easily be an emerging star,..however, Russell isnt going to be accurate enough to get him big numbers…Denny Green confirmed what I always believed about russell,…big arm, terrible accuracy,…start Garcia,..sorry brien.
August 25th, 2009 at 7:22 pm
useless transaction hes going to be gone before his bags are unpacked, heres your paycheck theres the door.
August 25th, 2009 at 7:28 pm
Bob, Green didnt say terrible it was inconsistent accuracy…..Damn Santana looked fried
August 25th, 2009 at 7:29 pm
I missed the Carlos Santana spot,…but Green was clear,..doesnt like Russell,..cant make all throws,..bad accuracy….but we already knew that, some in here are still in denial though,..not me.

Russell can make all the throws, just not accurately, just not all the time.
You have to admit that the throw to Murphy was a thing of beauty.
I don’t think he’ll ever be Joe Montana. But he might be JaMarcus Russell.

August 25th, 2009 at 7:47 pm
Just goes to show how concerned the coaches are about this D-Line. Its not a deep line and has no signature player…no signature players in the front 7. And that’s the problem. There is no player on the front 7 that the opponent has to look out for or game plan against. Thereby allowing the opponent to do what it does best without having to make too many nagging adjustments.
Look, we have what we have. We all knew the D-Line was an issue. all we can do is trust in the coaches. They are the ones that said this team is ready to roll.
I just want to see DHB get a couple of catches and Mitchell to play a game!

I wouldn’t overestimate him either. This guy would still be unemployed if not for turf toe to some guy named Jason Horton and the draft choices make by Al Davis.
August 25th, 2009 at 7:49 pm
idk why he got cut. He got cut by miami and miami runs a 34 maybe he isn’t suitable for 34 but just because he got cut doesn’t mean we can underestimate his value.

August 25th, 2009 at 7:55 pm
im not overestimating him either. im not even sold on this guy. all im saying is that we signed this guy for the right reason because he is a run stuffer and thats what we need on the dline
August 25th, 2009 at 8:01 pm

August 25th, 2009 at 8:05 pm
Stop your crying!!! lol
So we didnt draft a DT this year, and the DTs we have are sorry!!!
We drafted a QB, RB, and a WR. Next year will focus more on Run Defense and OT. We don’t need anything else, and we are still hound and not ready to compete for a SB!
August 25th, 2009 at 8:14 pm
2 things we needed to fix before 09 draft:
- Pass Offense
- Run Defense
We are scoring points, we added 2 WRs in the 1st 4 RDs, a Blocking TE, so the problem is fixed. (for now)
we added a few players on D, but we we need a few more.
August 25th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
We can’t fix everything with 1 Draft, but we did try.
We drafted a hard hitting SS, 2 DEs, and 1 LB.
August 25th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
yeah i think our pass offense is gonna be way better than last year. the run d is terrible but im hoping this cohen guy can make a difference to it.

Hound: young, sorry.
August 25th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
Taz,
I don’t know if he can make a difference, but we are trying.
We need to try harder ( trade picks, we have 2 3rds), or wait till next year.

Only 2 guys I remember that we had that were DTs that were affective on the line……..chester mcglokcton hahaha spelling that was fun and my favorite Darrell Russell what a damn tragedy could have been great……. all these no name water boys we have on he line… sands, broshuito, and joseph all tubs of lard that plays too high gets pushed like a sack of potatos and can’t stop the run…. we really need to focus on the dline and oline next year

August 25th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Hearing some good things here of Bryant so I took the liberty to watch some more of the SF game focusing on him.
First thing that jumped out to me was just how quick this guy is off the snap. He’s almost a half second ahead of everybody. He plays with really good leverage. He’s not stout enough to play over center against starters yet but he has lots of potential. Right now he may even be quick enough to play right or left DE. (Not sure if he has the moves though).
Second thing that jumped at me was just how much Sands sucks. He’s cut. I’m even more confident of that now.
August 25th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
Well maybe not DE. I’m not sure if he’s that quick b/c the DE has just a bit more space to cover so it takes a just a little bit more than a quick spurt or a quick pop to get there.
August 25th, 2009 at 9:21 pm

I think he can play Base End. LE

DT, DT, DE, MLB, ORT, ORG, PR/KR
August 25th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
JB, it seems you’re pretty close here. I would say, DE, ILB, OL, DL, DL, DL, DL, DL.

August 25th, 2009 at 10:27 pm
Kelley & Warren really need to step it up this year. Sands & Joseph are crap. We need to find the beef and put it in the middle. I think we’ll be seeing Ricky Brown as the #1 MLB with Morrison slipping over to the SSLB position. The combination of Morrison, Brown & Howard should work well. We are gold at corners and hopefully our safeties can get it together quickly. I’d really like to see what Mike Mitchell brings to the table. Assuming he can progress quickly, we might see both Branch and Mitchell in tandem. IIt might even work.
Stop the run! Defense wins championships!
August 25th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
What’s the latest on Chaz Schilens? How long will he be out? He was just really coming into his own.
August 25th, 2009 at 10:45 pm
Joseph at least is playing like he wants to be in the NFL. Don’t expect to see Mitchell before game 10. SS might be the toughest position to learn in the NFL other than Q. Chilens is gone til week 5-6, which is a HUGE problem. Time for “jivin” to get back to form, and quickly.

i hate to disagree…
we spent the entire draft drafting second teamers…
an excellent strategy if you’re set with your first team…
but we were 31st against the run…
keep your eyes on Raji… Brace… and Brinkley…
all of those guys did well last week…
how did DHB do… how about Mitchell???
i think we pissed away nearly an entire draft…
August 25th, 2009 at 11:19 pm
wait hold on, i don’t think chaz is going to be gone till week 5 or 6. I think it was 3 or 4. If it’s 5 and 6 then your right its definitely a problem
August 25th, 2009 at 11:21 pm
If the reaiders pass more then 15 times a game then we have no cjance of winning,…we need at least 200 yards a game rushing to stand a chance…I believe 200 rushing yards is possible.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:23 pm
Pete,..your asking how did dhb and mitchell did?…are you awate theres been no games yet?…you really cant evaluate them after the seasons over,…and certainly cant evaluate them when there hasnt even been a fukkin game yet!!!…people in florida are easily the dumbest in the usa.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:24 pm
I know this is going to be met with disagreement and some anger (then why say it?)but frm what I can see this year so far this team NEEDS a MLB and a SLB. Give me Aaron Curry and Rey Maualuga (I don’t want much do I?)based on where they were drafted. We could’ve had both. This would be a very different team. I see things a little differently. When I watch this defense the LBers drive me insane. The next time I see a LBer shoot a gap will be the first time. We don’t come off the edge with any ferocity, we don’t fill with any degree of aggressiveness. When we hit we don’t hit with any degree of aggressiveness. Our LBers throughout our history have been difference in our defense. These guy’s get pushed around and attacked by everyone. The only time they play with any degree aggression is in the passing game (coverage).
I persoanlly see our LBers the same way I saw the safeties 3 years ago now we have potentially great safety play but the LBer play leaves a lot to be desired.
Our Dlineman can’t afford to be too aggressive because they have no one behind them capable of being a force.
Now I say all that realizing that our DE’s need to be better, but I see the potenial for them to be much better THIS year with the emergence of Matt and Dez. I don’t see that with our LBers. We may need another DE due to the age of Ellis. But I would trade Rickey Brown and Kirk for Rey Maualuga, straight up.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
Garcia should start now…however he wont,..but, after a blowout loss in opener, I ama predicting thats russells only game starting,.I feel the raiders plan on playing garcia this year, but they know the openers a loss so they will trot out 2 then after game use him as scapegoat, make qb change.

Joe Cohen
Quick wit, easy going demeanor. High character. “A coaches dream.”
Transitioned from a FB to DT in 2004. Sat behind some very good linemen for the Gators and saw little field time. Needs work in every facet but an effective gap shooting run plugger. Impressive strength. Good quickness, lower body strength. His short stature lends itself to better leverage which he uses well. Needs work on every aspect of the position as one could imagine.
Gets washed and wired to blockers on occasion.
Needs to use hands to fight off blocks better.
Inexperience wading thru the garbage and with lateral movement.
A 3 technique in the 4-3.
A project.
The 3-4 Miami runs now could be partial reason for his release.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
Rob Ryan couldn’t game plan against 1 dimensional offenses. You could even argue he couldn’t game plan 0 dimensional offenses. Remember Rex Grossman & the Bears ?
Or The Texans without A Johnson, Schaub, and Green.

Bob, I think when Rey was still there at #6 in the 2nd rnd I think the Raiders knew they had him and then Cinci kicked us in the stomach. We then traded down and took Mitchell which at that point I think we did with some frustration having lost out on Rey, but we at least picked up a pick. But Mitchell IMO was a must do at that point.
Why do i have to call Gary I’ve already called Rod and Bob Fitz yesterday? Listen, I don’t think Gary wants hardcore fooball on his show.
Watching Eugene at FS I’ve been impressed he is a sure tackler and plays under control. He also plays very sound coverage, not to mention that I lve the kids size and athleticism.

August 25th, 2009 at 11:51 pm
94. Eugene’s been kind of a disappointment so far this pre. Made some noise last year in limted action, makes an occasional big hit and has far too many TD saving tackles…
August 25th, 2009 at 11:52 pm
I can’t wait to see if this offense can actually score points in a game that matters, the best remedy for a poor run defense is a high power offense. Colts proved that in 2007 won sb after finishing season 31st against the run.
August 25th, 2009 at 11:54 pm
Mistabrown we beat the Texans 31 to 10 we als shut down Fav-rey. While what he did from a fundamental standpoint was unconcious he did have some sound gameplans. I think his weakness was playcalling and teaching fundamentals. He has a lot to prove as a DC but saying he’s stupid is at best ignorant. You don’t coach at that level and be stupid…………period
As fans we think we know everything because we know what direction the offense is going in. No HC or owner or GM is ging to pay money and put their job on the line hiring an idiot…………period
August 25th, 2009 at 11:59 pm

I cut my teeth on sprts talk radio looong before Gary ever had a show. I used to call Dave Newhouse back in the 80’s we used to argue over the 49ers going to their first ever SB run. I never ever really called Gary’s show I called Pete Franklin’s show and that’s when I became well known. When I first started calling sportsphone 68 it wasn’t even 24 hours a day, it started at noon back when Mike Cleary was on in the morning.
Bob you’ve really got me twisted. Gary is a johnnie come lately.

Edward Kennedy died.
Empty headed liberals unite, have a moment of silence.
Chappaquiddick;
After the body was found, Kennedy gave a statement to police saying that on the previous night he had taken a wrong turn and accidentally driven his car off a bridge into the water. He pled guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury, and received a suspended sentence.
The incident became a national scandal, and may have affected the Senator’s decision not to run for President in 1972.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:19 am
Ya but Gary made you famous so you should be loyal to him, not fitz and brooks.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:19 am
Thanks mista,..for teds bio, we never would have known any of that if not for you. dumbass.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:20 am
man i think cable is gonna finish this whole season. I would love to have gruden coach the raiders again but as long as al is owner it ain’t gonna happen
August 26th, 2009 at 12:21 am
Priest also called Dan Selio and Ron & Don! His best work (sarcastically speaking) is the post game show after a Raider loss.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:22 am
No,..TJ`s best work was with Gary, Gary brings the best out of TJ,…but gary banned him for a while, I got TJ back and he has never thanked me.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:22 am
Bob its good to revisit history from time to time. Take a pill, have some coke & and STFU.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:25 am
Well mista, you typing out teds past acts was a poor attempt to show you are more then just footnall, but your attempt failed, unless it was your goal to show us all you are a very disgruntled man.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:26 am
Nnamdi21, I’m confused, how is that HIS fault he’s doing exactly what he’s supposed to do. he’s the last line of defense. The fact that he gets it done is what is impressive. It’s the LBers fault that he’s making so many.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:26 am
Gruden is better served in the booth on MNF. He’s going to be good! He was overrated as a coach. His dink & dunk conservative offense sucks.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:26 am
Ya mista the O we now have is soooo much better. lol
August 26th, 2009 at 12:27 am

August 26th, 2009 at 12:30 am
Bob I didnt type anything I cut & pasted it. I didnt attempt anything. You are reaching. I was just paying tribute to Edward Kennedy for his accomplishment. No big deal..
August 26th, 2009 at 12:31 am
No the Offense we have now is in a building mode with alot of young talent & a questionable lump for a Qb.
I didnt like Grudens offense Bob.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:33 am
MB, is Tom Cable a better coach than Jon Gruden? Oh, btw, I don’t care about the dumb broad Ted Kennedy killed.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:33 am
To be clear Bob. I liked Gruden as a HC but I didnt like his offense. You can separate the two. You can appreciate that right ?
August 26th, 2009 at 12:33 am
Well thanks Bob. Whatever…… but I’ve never really called Gary you have me mistaken with someone else. If Gary has you believing he made me. Here’s a hint…….it aint true.
No prob……..if I was banned I didn’t know it.
Now can we get back to the Raiders, Gary made me famous.lol I wish I had known because I never got a check. hahhaha
August 26th, 2009 at 12:36 am
MR, its a litle early to say seeing as Cable hasn’t coached 1 single game as HC dont you think? Im not going to count his miserable stint as interim HC.
Any other stupid questions MR ?
August 26th, 2009 at 12:39 am
Gruden’s success hinged a lot on a quaterback with a chip on his shoulder and a very strong work ethic, I don’t think he could do that again with this team. It would more rebuilding and more losing seasons. I want wins now!!
August 26th, 2009 at 12:49 am
Gruden is a very inspirational coach and is very good gameplanner. Understands the game and X’s and O’s like few others. But he’s inlove with the WCO to a fault. He also is very impatient with young players, and is too demanding on them.
His best days as a HC are ahead of him. Having a chance to sit back a reasses things will benefit him in his next HC job. Same as Vermeil and Belichik and Coughlin. None of them knew how to take a breath and have fun with the game.
Gruden will learn that over the next year or two.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:58 am
So in other words, MB, Gruden’s better. Thanks.
August 26th, 2009 at 12:58 am
Priest, Tom Cable is a better head coach than Jon Gruden?
August 26th, 2009 at 1:00 am
Gruden doesn’t even run a dink and dunk offense. I don’t know why you guys keep saying that, like parrots.
August 26th, 2009 at 1:02 am
Duh! what?

August 26th, 2009 at 1:04 am

August 26th, 2009 at 1:06 am
Priest, yeh, a loaded question. Who is a better coach, Jon Gruden or Tom Cable. That probably is a loaded question for you, considering your IQ is 5.
August 26th, 2009 at 1:07 am
They keep saying it because Davis worshiping retards think that any offense that consists of pass plays under 20 yards is a west coast offense, priest. Goodnight.
August 26th, 2009 at 1:49 am
Jon Gruden is being coached by the same voice guy as Jaworski. They yell with the same cadence now. It’s funny. And sickening to listen to that contrived crap.

I’m keeping it real.
Even though MR called me an “idiot” yesterday, I have to suport his statements on Gruden and ask the question, how can anybody be overly critical of Gruden’s offense?
His offense was the most prolific in Raider history and produced an MVP QB with the most passing yards in Raider history.
August 26th, 2009 at 2:57 am
How could anybody be against Gruden as a Raider. The guy was an intense coach who brought us back and instilled RESPONSIBILITY and DISCIPLINE in our players. They performed, “period”.
Some people have the tendency to bag on any Raider who leaves the team and say they suck once they leave. Maybe Gruden looked elsewhere, but he earned it. He was a winner here and didn’t want to put up with any crap. If you want a really good coach you have to actually do have to make some consessions.
Any good coach wants some power.
August 26th, 2009 at 3:00 am
Priest. Have we ever had an offense that scored more points or gained more yards than Gruden’s “west coast”?
Somebody check the stats for me.
August 26th, 2009 at 3:05 am
In 2000 the Raiders gained 5776 yards averaging 361 yards a game.
In NFL history, as of November 23, 2002, Rich Gannon threw for more yards in a 10 game span than any other QB in NFL history.

Callahan era
Under Callahan, the Raiders finished the 2002 season 11–5, won their third straight division title, and clinched the top seed in the playoffs. Rich Gannon was named MVP of the NFL after passing for a league-high 4,689 yards. After beating the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans by large margins in the playoffs, the Raiders made their fifth Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl XXXVII.

Sorry but “we’re on our way” and “rest assured” goes along with “mark my words” and the infamous, if not notorius “I guarantee it”.
It’s called grasping for straws.
Witness: In the past Raider fans stated “Shanahan sucks. Elway made him. He’ll doom the organization.”
Now YOU’RE saying that without Shanahan, the team is doomed.
Grasping for straws.
KC? Yes, new HC. That’s usually a plus (Raiders being the exception, in that the Raiders never actually get a head coach quality guy in)
As far as “hard work, and a little patience”? You must have the patience of Job. I think 6 years is patience enough, isn’t it? Of course, you do have Al Davis, so you might be looking at another decade.
:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::
Shits-o-lot… er… Crap-o-load… er whatever…
your reasoning skills are deformed…
elway did make shanahan…
without elway… shanahan has won ONE… ONE post-season game since elway retired… he lost 4… that’s 10 seasons of futility…
to help you put that into perspective… the Raiders have won 4 post-season games and lost 3… since Elway retired…
so when people say that Denver is a mess… it’s not because Shanahan left… it’s because Denver is a mess…
a lot like yourself !!!

We got NT Joe Cohen, eh?
good for us. What were the chances of Jason Horton making the team anyways? slim to none.
August adds:
LT Seth Wand (Barnes injury)
LB Morlon Greenwood (Ekejiuba injury)
FS Rashad Baker (Mitchell injury)
MLB Napolean Harris (Morrison injury)
DT Joe Cohen (Sands is done, run defense still sucks)
August subtracts:
DE/DT Derrick Gray
TE/MLB Chris O’Neill
TE/FB J.P. Foschi
FB Lorenzo Neal
CB Jason Horton
***
I’m not mad. anybody else? competition brings out the best (and worst) in everyone … I’m glad we’re still making moves to improve the team instead of standing pat before the season starts. I want the best 53.
August 26th, 2009 at 6:33 am
Corey Williams…
go get him Mr Davis !!!
August 26th, 2009 at 6:34 am
Good Morning Nation!
Horton was doomed after the Dallas game anyway. I hope he didn’t grope anyone on the bus going out the way he did those Dallas receivers. Let’s just give Cohen the old Sands jersey and we won’t skip a beat — we’ll just transfer all our talk to him, until he’s laid to waste also. Time to strike up the band once again — bring in COREY WILLIAMS!! — He’s worth a second round pick .. oh wait, that means we would give up a Mike Mitchell!
August 26th, 2009 at 6:36 am
good morning fellas.
Joe Cohen is 6′2″ 310 lbs.
4th Round pick by the 49ers in 2007.
Cohen started 33 games for Florida, including 12 starts at defensive tackle during the Gators’ national championship season.
Cut by the Dolphins on Monday. Claimed by the Raiders on Tuesday. thats all I know guys – sorry

August 26th, 2009 at 6:40 am

Javon Comback Player of the year
Ellis 7-10 sacks
PLAY J RICH!!!!!!!!
winning 8 games is on the horizon 9-10 is possible if we get solid play from our LINES….
Chaz will still have a GREAT season as our number one guy!!!!
RETURN TO EXCELLENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LB Morlon Greenwood (Ekejiuba injury)
FS Rashad Baker (Mitchell injury)
MLB Napolean Harris (Morrison injury)
These are great additions I was Stokd to bring back Baker and As I posted yesterday I loved the Harris pick and was sad to see him not live up to his billilng,,,this may be his last chance and he might play like a mad man knowing that!!! And Greenwood is a consumate pro has been for a few years now plays tough got injured worked hard to get back nice pick up here he will push Williams/Alston/and maybe Morrison off the roster with the emergance of Brown…Even tho I would like to see Capt Kirk Slide over if he loses the MLB comp!!!!

That sums it up If Parcells dsnt want him……Wait our center….he…AHHHHH CRAP!!!!!!! lets hope ol Bill was wrong for once or twice in his life!!!!!!
August 26th, 2009 at 6:46 am
OAKlifer: Bill Parcells didn’t teach his defense how to tackle …
did you see that run by DeAngelo Williams on SportsCenter a few days ago? embarrassing. He broke like 5 tackles and got the TD. He should have been taken down for a 5 yard loss on the play.
I hope we don’t look like that against San Diego!
August 26th, 2009 at 6:47 am
I like the pickups of Harris and Baker; I’m not sure they really expect a lot out of Cohen, other than just to see another body in there, for now. I mentioned this before — there may be some quality D-Line depth on both Miami and Tennessee. If we keep an eye on their cuts, we might just end up with a player who has a lot of potential in our scheme. Their backups have looked pretty solid so far in the preseason. Hey, has anyone heard anything from the “all-star” defensive backs over in the San Francisco Gay area in the last day or two?
August 26th, 2009 at 6:48 am
Corey Williams……
Worked his way up from 6th round draft pick to player of the week at one point turned in GB only 3 sack preformance from a DT ever…Also Williams was voted the GMC Defensive Player of the Week for games played on November 18-19, 2007. Williams posted four solo tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles during the game.He finished the 2007 season with 51 tackles, a career-high.
On February 20, 2008, the Packers placed the franchise tag on Williams. Ten days later, Williams was traded to the Cleveland Browns for a second-round draft pick.
Sounds intresting plus he played DE in college….hmmm
August 26th, 2009 at 6:49 am
they ran parcells out of Dallas because he sucked. The Giants front office built that Phil Simms SB team not parcells.parcells sucks and I 4 one am GLAD he never came 2 Oaktown
August 26th, 2009 at 6:51 am
Wow Parcells sucks strong words 4eva. I think when jerry signed TO without consulting Parcells he was gone. 1 yr in Miami and they win 11 games come one 4eva guy knows his football.
GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 26th, 2009 at 6:52 am
Williams is an inside tackle…
he doesn’t work well in a 3-4… that’s why he’s struggling in Cleveland…
he likes the 4-3 and wants to go to a team that has that scheme…
he get’s after QB’s and tackles ball carriers…
he IS what we need…
August 26th, 2009 at 6:52 am
The only reason the Packers let Corey Williams go was because he had too high a price tag; for that team, they don’t go about free agents the same way everybody else does. If he had stayed, he might have had a Pro Bowl type year. He has so much upside — we really need to pull the trigger on this guy; he’s young and he has proven capability!
August 26th, 2009 at 6:53 am
Corey Williams is paid like a Top 5 DT, just like Tommy Kelly.
Gerard Warren is also making top dollar and according to Jerry Mac is our best DT.
these guys are locks.
We’ll cut Sands and save a few extra bucks, giving guys like Joseph, Bryant, Boschetti & Cohen a chance to compete for the final 2 spots in the DT rotation.
please put the pipe down. you won’t see Corey Williams in Oakland this year, especially with that pricetag.
August 26th, 2009 at 6:54 am
If Parcells sucks so bad, maybe he’ll take Terdell off our hands!
August 26th, 2009 at 6:54 am
i gotta give Parcells credit…
he has taken 4 different struggling franchises and within 2 years had them in the playoffs…
he is one of only 2 or 3 coaches who, in my opinion, can run the whole show…
August 26th, 2009 at 6:56 am
isnt Slob Ryan in Cleve?? dsnt he have MAss man love for Warren and Sands?? hell give em both and a 4th rounder…..it couldnt be worse than what we have now….

Parcells has to feel good about at least 1 thing…
How he handled the Jason Taylor situation. Dude was missing time during the offseason to dance on TV in hopes to kick start a career after football.
Parcells told him to show and he didn’t. Miami shipped his big contract to the Skins for a 2nd rounder. Taylor had a down year. Skins missed the playoffs, Fins made the playoffs. Taylor comes crawling back to Miami after getting cut by the Skins and signs up to play for peanuts and a chance to get his dignity back. LOL.

the Raiders aren’t going to absorb the Corey Williams contract.
They are happy with Kelly & Warren and are not going to cut either one of them. Both took paycuts this offseason to help Mr. Davis get under the cap …
should Warren be a backup? maybe! but not in Oakland. they love the guy. and you certainly don’t take on that Williams contract to have him come off the bench
this makes no sense. it’s not about how stupid the Browns are or what they’d want in return for him. It’s about the Raiders. it’s not happening. take that to the bank

Javon has a similar chance here in Oakland. The only difference is the fact that at least I didn’t have to watch J.W. dance on TV every night for eight weeks. The silver lining in all this is that if he goes anywhere for a lot of money later, it’ll be to the Redskins! And they suck, so it should be a pretty high pick!

I don’t know what kind of numbers Javon can put up, but if he just turns out to be a good solid possession-type receiver and runs good routes, that may be all we need. As Lee Corso would say: “Not so fast, my friend.”
There is a lot of positive buzz going on this year — I think the switch back to fundamental drills early was good for this team. Some of the pieces are falling into place, and our third, fourth and fifth round draft selections look pretty good. JRuss is improving, Javon is progressing and the cancer (Burgess) has been cut away. Give Cable a chance; at least ride it through the first three games …

the number of actual, legit SUCCESSFUL NFL coaches can be counted on one hand…
all the rest… everyone of them… is someone a team took a chance on… with no more insight than we have when we take a chance on someone…
the league is full of Head Coach wannabes… a lot of it is being on the right team at the right time…

If you hadn’t noticed… Fargas is still starting too
take it up with our expert talent evaluator Tom Cable
Huff played well against Dallas and was INJURED for our second preseason game
August 26th, 2009 at 7:56 am
I, for one, is holding judgement on Cable. I like the things Raidertbone is talking about with Cable. What I don’t like is the penelties are still way too high. And, more importantly, the inability to stop the run.
One play, in particular showed several weaknesses. Against Frisco, Coffee runs a delay off left tackle. Their LT and LG double team Warren and take him out of the play.
The TE handles Scott without a problem.
Ricky Brown doesn’t stay in his lane and cheats to his left, taking him out of the play.
Branch hesitates and doesn’t cover the ground that Brown vacates.
Coffee squeezes between Warren and Scott.
Scott gets an arm on him, but that’s it.
Brown doesn’t even see the RB and Branch wiffs.
Coffee runs for about 18 yards before the other Safety gets him.
Until that is fixed, the Raiders are in big trouble.

August 26th, 2009 at 8:01 am
AZ,
Saw your questiopn from yesterday regarding the pulling lineman Idealy the lineman pulls to seal the out side i.e. DE if he was getting to the second level to seal a LB the play must have been designed to let the DE penetrate and get to far behind the play allowing the playside Tackle to track block the MLB while the pulling gaurd kicks out the OLB…In this instance you better hope damn well yor DE hasnt over run the play or you saftey or CB can play huge run support…I think that is where most of the responsibility lies after they handle two LB’s and dupe a DE into running right by the play,,
August 26th, 2009 at 8:06 am
Lol, Tom Cable is no Madden…never will be…never should even be mentioned in the same breath. Anyone that talks about Cable being anything like Madden should be ashamed…the only things they have in common are girth, gender and ethnicity.

August 26th, 2009 at 8:14 am
Oak,
Thats what I was seeing. I need to watch the game again, but it looked like over pursuit from our OLB and DE on both sides of the line. DE and OLB were behind the play by the time the MLB was blocked by the gaurd. Rediculous if you ask me. Especially after the 10th time they ran the same play. You’d think since Marshall runs the D from the booth, he could have corrected that.
August 26th, 2009 at 8:14 am
Does anyone out there think the resaon our defense stinks rigth now is the formation we are playing in? Does anyone think we would play better with a nose guard clogging up the middle taking on two blockers to free up our linebackers? What are your thoughts?

Your rationale is a threat to lucidity everywhere.
THREE DTs rotate for roughly equal playing time if they are healthy. The fourth is the real sub.
Williams value would increase as he shores up a weak line. And we could dabble with Kelly at DE (ala Reggie White) against run heavy opponents.

giving up 48 points in a game (and predicting as much) is thoroughly ridiculous…
that’s 6 touchdowns and a coupla field goals…
now, no doubt, we may have a big problem stopping the run…
but a score like that would require turnovers… and i haven’t seen an indicator that turnovers would be a big concern…
also a score like that would indicate an effective passing game against us… i haven’t seen any indicators that teams will beat us that badly through the air…
giving up 200 plus yards on the ground combined with an ineffective offense would likely yield a score of 24 to 3…
i’m thinking someone needs to do some thinking…
and toss that damn cystal ball you bought from rack-o-schit away…
MNF Final Score: Raiders 24 – Chargers 17

Preseason or not the chargers have 2 rookies starting on the O-Line….
August 26th, 2009 at 9:33 am
If the D-line is good but need better technique like Cable says then Raiders will be like Phoenix Suns.
Score a lot but no defense.
Actually the offense looks promising.
If the offense can carry them until the Dline gets their sh!t together Raiders might be okay.
Even last year they moved the ball down the field, only to make crucial mental errors yanking the rug out from underneath themselves.
Just have to cut back on the errors and score every series.
D might be good enough until they start to gel.
Anything will be an improvement over Ryan’s Swiss cheese Dline.

Of course, you do have Al Davis, so you might be looking at another decade.

our D ends are the main issue vs. the run so far, in particular Scott, who has been getting mauled. Alston and Norris have not supported behind Scott very well either.
the D tackles look good, the D ends not so much

How many points did they SCORE in the 1st half?

Ahh..the “used, abused, and confused” poster.
Point the bonehead made was most of the rushing yds were when the scrubs were in.
Clearly it wasn’t.
Except for the mis communication freeby TD the Niners handed the Raiders, how many points did the Raiders score in the first half?
ZERO..which was pretty close to their rushing yds.
Gosh..what happened to that “3 headed monster”?? lmao..
Turns out ALL THREE WERE ON THE NINERS..

giving up 48 points in a game (and predicting as much) is thoroughly ridiculous…
that’s 6 touchdowns and a coupla field goals…
now, no doubt, we may have a big problem stopping the run…
but a score like that would require turnovers… and i haven’t seen an indicator that turnovers would be a big concern…
also a score like that would indicate an effective passing game against us… i haven’t seen any indicators that teams will beat us that badly through the air…
giving up 200 plus yards on the ground combined with an ineffective offense would likely yield a score of 24 to 3…
i’m thinking someone needs to do some thinking…
and toss that damn cystal ball you bought from rack-o-schit away…

They just wouldn’t listen.
August 26th, 2009 at 10:30 am
I just don’t understand how Richochet and others can dismiss the Jamarcus TD to Murphy, as just a blown coverage.
It wasn’t a “blown” coverage. That is when a guy is completely wide open, like when a DB releases a guy on the sidelines and the Safety never comes over (think us in the Ravens game last year).
This was a zone that had a hole, every zone has little pockets, in the opposite corner of the end zone. The Defense called for a perfect laser of a pass in the corner to beat them, and that’s what he did. The DB’s played a little off becuase I think they thought there is no way he can get the ball in their that accurately and quickly, but he did. Caught them, one a Pro Bowler, on their heels a little bit.
Was it a bad defensive play? Yes, but good QB’s take advantage of misplays and make teams pay, and bad QB’s let the defense get away with it.
August 26th, 2009 at 10:31 am
Hopefully Cable will have the sense to pull McFad if he’s having a bad day.
If it’s a good day, turn him loose!
How many times did Jordan snail up to the line and tiptoe around before they finally put Fargas in.
Fargas hits that line fast.
Bush is consistent.
DHB only has to catch one bomb.
After that, they have to watch him deep and it’s really going to open up the field for the other guys.
Especially the tight ends.
Can’t watch everybody.
Cut back on penalties and this offense will score.
August 26th, 2009 at 10:33 am
Vegas:
You are stating the obvious — most of us saw and recognize that it was pretty much a blown coverage by players who couldn’t back up the smack they were laying down in practice, come game time. Just as in life, people who whine and scream for attention throughout the week are the same ones who get torched on Sundays and then cut on Mondays.
August 26th, 2009 at 10:34 am
Vegas is right.
JR’s pass to Murphy was a laser.
August 26th, 2009 at 10:36 am
The bottom line is this a touchdown pass is a touchdown pass, you cant discredit that. Whether or not it was because of blown coverage, Jamarcus exploited it and scored a touchdown. Last time i checked a touchdown is worth six points no matter how you get it.
August 26th, 2009 at 10:38 am
TBone,
OK, I hear you. But “blown” coverage NO, they were where they were supposed to be, they just didn’t react to the ball in the air quick enough, and Jamarcus’ arm strength beat the zone.
Bad defensive play by the DB’s absolutely, “blown” coverage, just not comfortable using that word. Like I said, remeber the Ravens game last year where they had a WR that had nobody within 20 yards of him 40 yards down the field, now THAT is a “blown” coverage.
August 26th, 2009 at 10:40 am
Any TD thrown by Russell is a good one…thank god he didn’t overthrow him!
August 26th, 2009 at 10:40 am
So far, we have seen flashes of what we can expect — the big run by DMac, a couple of big-time throws by JRuss, a couple of three-and-outs by the defense (hey! that’s all we can ask for!), production by Murphy.
It’s coming together … drink up, me hearties, yo ho!

best way to help the run d is to score points ourselves, and early. we score, and other teams don’t run as much; we don’t score, as in the recent years past, and teams punk us in the run game and wear us down hard
simple equation. we need to score early and often for a change. the whole dynamic of the defense will change if this can finally occur…it’s been since Rich
August 26th, 2009 at 10:48 am
Raiders wouldn’t have won any games last year if teams had been smart enough to run on them every play.
Just look at the numbers.
If the Packers hadn’t given the ball to Favor, they win easily.
This leak needs to be plugged.
What’s going to happen when this actually occurs to some team’s coach?
Word gets out: “Just run every play. Can’t lose.”
Fortunately for Raiders, there’s a perception that you should pass every now and then.
I don’t know why other coaches haven’t figured that out yet.
Good thing.
No game would have been close, like so many were last year.

Raiders gave up 5.3 yards per carry.
So if you keep running you get a first down against the Raiders every 2 plays.
That is so unbelievably bad.
And Ryan was untouchable?

San Diego scored 28 pts against us the first game of 2008, 34 points the second game.
How much of an impact will the new defensive coaching staff have?
Greg Ellis & Trevor Scott replace Burgess & Edwards/Richardson at DE.

I think the offense and special teams will have to put up at least 30 points to win Week 1 on MNF

TW, I love your enthusiasm and your willingness to defend the Raiders, but let’s be real…yes the 49ers may not have scored many point off of their crushing running against us, but they are also a bottom dwelling team, so if another team that had a decent QB ran that effectively against us, do you still suppose our D would have held them in that first half?
I seriously doubt it…that is why it bothered me so much watching them get all of those yards…and our starters were in for the majority of those first half yards.
Marshall, you gotta do something before the SD game.

August 26th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
To Weasel on post #280. Your facts are a little twisted. Howie had to convince another Raiders D-lineman not to bring a scappel into the game. I saw Howie tell the story on a sports talk show. I’m not sure about the chop block story.

August 26th, 2009 at 12:55 pm

Fargas and Garcia should both be traded. Nothing against Fargas, just that DMac and Bush are better options and G-Russ/Rankin are both more than solid No. 3 RBs who can contribute on special teams.
Gradkowski and Frye are much better than any of the backups and all of the starters (aside from JaMarcus) we’ve had since Gannon left.
Lastly, I’d love to swing a deal for Shaun Rodgers or Vince Wilfork as someone asked Jerry about on today’s chat. If that happened I’d go with a starting lineup of:
DE- T. Kelly
DT- Rodgers/Wilfork
DT- Warren
DE- Ellis
With Shaughnessy, Richardson, Scott and Bryant among the backups.
I think that lineup would greatly improve our Run D. Trevor Scott needs to come in as a situational pass rusher like Chris Clemons did two years ago. He’d still see plenty of snaps and wouldn’t have to worry about being a run stuffer.

I was thinking about whether or not the Raiders have the personnel to run a 3-4 and of course no they don’t….and they don’t have a DC who runs a base 3-4 either, but they certainly can run a 3-4 more often with zone and run blitz packages.
Lets think about it…
The OLB positions can be filled by Scott, Howard and maybe Ellis. Scott and Howard would be able to play really well standing up IMO when it comes to blitzing and coverage.
The ILB’s would be Morrison and Brown, with Nap backing up.
The D-Line of course would be a question.
I can see Boschetti at LDE, Warren as the NT, and Kelly as the RDE. With Richardson providing back up at the End positions.
They have the athletisism, bulk and telant to run a 3-4 situational zone and run blitz package IMO.
They definitely can’t run a full time base 3-4 though at this time though of course.

The Napa, Calif., police department plans to question Oakland Raiders coach Tom Cable about his alleged role in a skirmish that left assistant coach Randy Hanson with a broken bone in his face.
A department spokesperson said Wednesday that Cable would be interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation in the near future, but a date was not specified.
The department has been contacted by NFL security and said it is cooperating with the league, the spokesperson said.
Hanson was hospitalized following the Aug. 5 attack that he told police was initiated by a member of the Raiders coaching staff at the team’s training camp hotel in Napa. According to reports, Cable attacked Hanson during a meeting with some of the team’s defensive coaches.
Last week, Cable said “nothing happened.”
“When all the facts come out, everything will be fine,” he said.
Hanson has spoken to Napa police and has not been seen at Raiders camp since the incident. The case was initially closed and then reopened Friday when Hanson agreed to cooperate with authorities.
“Hanson’s future with the team is currently being addressed,” a Raiders executive said Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Hanson has retained an attorney specializing in employment law, potentially signaling yet another lawsuit for team owner Al Davis, who’s already locked in a legal battle with former Oakland coach Lane Kiffin.

===============================
You need to look at it again.
OBVIOUSLY Clements released Murphy.
Roman, instead of drifting over, drifted towards the middle of the field, then realized to get back.
Murphy was WIDE OPEN..and “perfect laser of a pass’?? lol..are you serious? The defender was 10 FEET OFF OF THE DEFENDER WHEN THE DEFENDER CAUGHT THE BALL..I could have made that pass..you maybe could have made that pass..my daughter definitely could.
Sorry to burst your bubble, but the only ones..I emphasize the ONLY ones who are saying that wasn’t blown coverage is raider fans who are embarrassed that that freeby is the only thing the Raiders starting offense mustered.
Every sports cast.every newspaper article..all the same..blown coverage.
Reality bites sometimes.
You know..like hearing your new improved D line, THE STARTERS, with your new asst coaches was completely owned by the Niners BACKUPS.

^^^^^^^Who gives a crap about that now….
This team (and especially the defense) need to play with a chip on their shoulders and with a freakin closer game instinct!
Next years draft better be on a pass rushing DE beast DE, a beast of a run stuffing DT, a beast MLB and on a RT/RG.

Richochet,
Jamarcus threw the ball from the 31 yard line, Murphy was a few yards in the end zone, and it was from close to one hashmark to the sideline on the other side of the field. The ball traveled close to 40 yards in the air, with a tight spiral, little arc, and almost hit Murphy between the 1 and the 8 on his jersey. You let me know when you and your daughter can start doing that.

The three head monster is a joke. You need a two man roation with a scatback as the 3rd RB for carries and a few catches every now and then. This 3 headed attack is stupid. This is the NFL guys

How we should draft
1st round DT
2nd round MLB
3rd round LT/RG
4th round RG/LT
Etc.
Here is how Al will draft
1st round fastest guy no matter what position he plays
2nd round WR
3rd round DB
4th round another real fast guy
5th round Hussian Bolt

Al’s been pretty good of late with his later round picks, he just stinks the first two rounds.
Myers, Shanessey, Murphy, Norris…..that’s pretty good for later round production.
We just need to tell Al to sleep in on Saturday and I would be comfortable just taking the highest guy on Kiper Jr’s board the first two rounds and than let Al do his thing in the later rounds.

Shhhh, no one tell Al that round 1 of the draft is now Thursday night and rounds 2 and 3 are Friday night….I’ll dress in a silver and black suit and sneak in and make the picks for the first three rounds (all DT, DEs and LBers) and then when Al’s weird brother shows up on Saturday, he can handle rounds 4-7.

I would imagine the later rounds are left to the few professionals on staff.

Professionals in the Oakland Raiders front office? That may be an oxymoron.

then we’d really be in trouble

Fuk Brace. Over rated because of who he played along side.
******************
This is false to the max! Raji benefited from playing next to Brace. If you dont know Brace can play all along the dline in the 3-4 as he has in NE. He drew the double teams against the run while in BC. Raji was the UT and better pass rusher while Brace was the run stuffer. I glad you think New England actually wastes time with overrated players. Great observation

I like the article on ellis, I also like him as a Raider.Question, how many years does he have in the tank?

August 26th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
No problem Lefty
August 26th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
Ellis has more left in the tank for the 4-3 defense than Burgess’ sorry ass

Man, my wife will be pissed once she finds out that the draft is now over three days, and that I will still need to be at the office talking with you guys on that Sunday about how the draft went, lol.
She, and everything other than the Raiders, gets tuned out during the draft…

I heard that B,
As far as Jruss goes I think the next two years will speak volumes about the kid but I’m not sure why everyone is on the kid he looked good at the end of last season all he needs to do is build of that some people sound like they are comparing him to jared lorenzen or something….Russell will be fine if he works hard but he is steadily improving and even the haters cant deny that…..
———————————-
“Next two years”…NEXT TWO YEARS? lol..This is year 3, and now you want to basically state everyone should wait TWO MORE YEARS?
In other words, at this point he sucks. So..hey..let’s give him more time..Oh hell, let’s just state “Check back in 2016..if he still sucks after 10 years we’ll slap the bust label on him”
“Russell will be fine if he works hard”??
You realize what you just said?? “IF” he works hard. You are right. He DOESN’T work hard. Isn’t that a tell?
Isn’t that something that should NEVER be on a NFL players resume, much less the #1 pick in the drafts resume?

That’s going to be awesome – Brian the Genital going with his uncle Krappy to the game on Saturday! Nothing like a family of morons coming together over some pigskin.
I can just see those two fools now – splitting one hot dog while filling their pockets with relish and onions for dinner that night, “crossing their streams” at the same urinal during halftime, crapping their pants in unison when Green false starts in the 2nd quarter …
The only thing better than Krappy and Brian the Genital walking hand and hand out of the Coliseum after a big win is them also walking hand and hand into the Coliseum before a big win.

……………………………………………….
Nothing wrong with the old mans draft the last 3 years. He needs to change his deffensive mindset however.
3-4 BABY! Get with the program Al!=

Last 3 years?
Russell-talk is if no major progress this year, bust.
McFadden-has done ZERO. Can’t break tackles. Goes down once touched. Same knocks in college.
Bey-Can’t catch the ball. In two games has done zero.
Care to revise your statement, sir?
In other words, you don’t have a clue.

This was my joke last year but I will recycle it for this occasion.
How we should draft
1st round DT
2nd round MLB
3rd round LT/RG
4th round RG/LT
Etc.
Here is how Al will draft
1st round fastest guy no matter what position he plays
2nd round WR
3rd round DB
4th round another real fast guy
5th round Hussian Bolt
^^^^^^^Yep…oh and he will draft another TE in round 6 again….LOL

Connie was cool, her husband sylvester was realy cool.
August 26th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Lefty………….Alex Smith is a pro bowler for years to come. SF didnt need Aaron Rodgers. He played in a pro style offense. You know a pro style offense isnt a good indicator of how a college QB will transfer over to the NFL. A spread option type of QB like Smith was a genius pick!!!

Brien, you’d think so the way whiner followers(they don’t have fans, just followers) like to talk about our QB.Russell may never be great, but he will always be better than Smith.of course that can’t be reported by any media sources.

At least he’s suited up, unlike your boy Crabtree LOL. Hasn’t even signed yet. Knows he’s no NFL wide reciever. THAT is why he’s holding out. He knows it’s his ONLY chance to get the big dollars, cuz after his contract is up?
FA fasho!

I damn sure did! Well GP is a little out of my age. But Jkidd I damn sure remember him. I remember mother’s day in 1994 i got dude’s autography. Krappy, what time are you planning on picking Brian the Genital up for the big game on Sat? I’m concerned because you’ll just be finished with your afternoon feeding and will be primed to crap your pants before kickoff. Possibly in the car.
The best plan is to have Brian over on Friday night to cover your car seats in protective plastic. Then only eat Long John Silver’s for dinner, you have a much better chance of successfully digesting clam strips than you do your usual Arby’s Roastburger with extra bun on the side.
Finally, make sure Brian brings a box of handi-wipes, talcom powder and ski goggles to the game so he can treat you if a crapping explosion occurs in the seats.
Trust me Krappy, Brian the Genital is very talented at cleaning out dirty cracks with maximum efficiency.
