Offense gets a passing grade

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, August 26th, 2009 at 8:24 pm in Oakland Raiders.

News and notes from Wednesday’s Raiders practice:

– The Raiders had their longest practice of training camp, which coach Tom Cable says was the plan all along.

It would be hard to blame him for keeping things going just so he could keep watching a passing offense that looked to be putting things together.

Keeping things in perspective, the Raiders had their first units playing against scout teams again as they game plan for the New Orleans Saints.

So they should look good.

But that hasn’t stopped them from having desultory passing sessions for the better part of the last three years regardless of their practice opposition.

During the team and seven-on-seven sessions included in a two-and-a-half hour practice, that changed. Instead of seeing balls strike the ground with alarming frequency, receivers ran crisp routes and caught passes just as they were coming out of breaks.

JaMarcus Russell was extremely accurate, Jeff Garcia had his moments and Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye occasionally got into the act.

Instead of a parade of checkdowns and block-and-release throws to tight ends, virtually every wide receiver got into the act.

Darrius Heyward-Bey may have had his best training camp practice. Yes, he had a drop, but he also had what may have been his best catch _ a play in which he came to a stop, reached back to catch a Frye pass that went behind him, and somehow caught it while falling to the ground.

“Right after he caught it, I said to him, ‘Your mistake is you showed me you can do that and so now the expectation goes up,’ ” Cable said. “But he had a great day catching the ball. You all saw that. That catch right there would be difficult for anybody.”

Heyward-Bey shrugged his shoulders, called the catch “normal,” and said it was all in a day’s work.

“It’s a catch that needed to be made,” Heyward-Bey said. “I was working for the scout team, just went out there, ran a play, caught it.”

Tight end Zach Miller, who a week before said he was hoping for a “legit” offense, was appling adjectives to the potential of the passing game which seemed laughable after a practice meltdown against San Francisco.

“As soon as our offense gets that rhythm and our quarterbacks are on time with the receivers and anticipating them coming out of their breaks, our passing game is unstoppable,” Miller said. “It’s all about timing, rhythm and quarterbacks having trust in their receivers that they’re going to be in there break at a certain yardage, coming out at the right time.

“As soon as they’re feeling them and they’re letting the ball loose on time, you can’t defend it.

Cable called for a repeat performance Thursday morning, the Raiders’ last practice in Napa.

“We’re getting there. We’re getting closer,” Cable said. “I want to see us come out in the morning and do the same thing and build some consistency. When we’ve had a good practice or two, we’ve kind of tailed a little bit, so I’d like to just see us keep it at a high level. But it’s getting there.”

Said Johnnie Lee Higgins: “If we don’t do it again tomorrow, we wasted our time.”

– Cable said he was pleased with the session all the way up to the end, which was out of view of the media.

“Loved all three phases until the last period,” Cable said. “It was a long practice and I wanted to push them a little at the end.”

– Additional practice highlights are available on my Twitter page.

– Among those who didn’t practice included WR Chaz Schilens (foot), T Khalif Barnes (ankle), DE Matt Shaughnessy (foot), C John Wade (stinger), RB Justin Fargas (hamstring), LB Kirk Morrison (elbow), LB Isaiah Ekejiuba (shoulder), S Hiram Eugene, S Mike Mitchell (hamstring) and P Shane Lechler (groin).

Cable said those who could possibly play against New Orleans included Shaughnessy, Ekejiuba, Eugene and Lechler.

Cable said Eugene has missed the last two sessions with the stomach flu. Eugene told reporters he was out with a pectoral strain.

– Two new players, cornerback Michael Hawkins and defensive tackle Joe Cohen, got in their first work as Raiders. Hawkins was released recently by Tampa Bay after being released by Dallas. Cohen was cut loose by Miami.

Jason Horton was waived/injured and received a settlement, and wide receiver Samie Parker was waived to bring in Hawkins.

“We wanted to add a little depth along the D-line and get some more speed at corner,” Cable said.

– Cable said he still considered cornerback spot opposite Nnamdi Asomugha an open competition between Chris Johnson and Stanford Routt. Johnson at times was running second teams, with Routt moving inside as the slot corner when the Raiders went to nickel.

– Tight end end Brandon Myers needed an I.V. for cramps following practice.

– Advertisers for KSFO (560-AM) made for one of the biggest practice crowds of the season. Following practice, quarterback Jeff Garcia walked alongside a fence and signed an autograph for every fan who wanted one.

Russell, meanwhile has discovered a backdoor route out of the field house and was later spotted in the hotel lobby, where there were fewer autograph demands and no media requests.

– Barnes orchestrated a portion of the crowd to sing Happy Birthday to Cornell Green. When Green attempted to exit through the gate to avoid the serenade, CEO Amy Trask brought him back.

– According to an ESPN report, Napa police will talk to Tom Cable about his alleged involvement in an incident that left defensive assistant Randy Hanson with a broken jaw.

The Napa police have not updated their statement after announcing they were reopening the invesitgation of one Raiders coach being injured after an altercation with another Raiders coach.

– Al Davis has a Napoleon complex. A search of Profootballreference.com reveals only four players in pro football history named Napoleon. Three of them have signed with the Raiders _ Napoleon McCallum, Napoleon Kaufman and Napoleon Harris (twice).

The other Napoleon was Napoleon Barrell, a 5-foot-8, 200-pound center who played for the Oorang Indians in 1923. No way Davis could tell if Barrell had “Raider speed.” He wasn’t born for another six years and was probably 15 years away from dominating stickball games in the streets of Brooklyn.

    6 WRs:
    - Chaz ( Go Aztecs!!! )
    - DHB
    - JLH
    - Walker
    - Murphy
    - Miller

    2 TEs:
    Miller
    Myers

    ^^^^^^
I think Stewart or Strong need to be kept as well. 3 TE’s are going to be needed on this roster.

Darrius has to ask himself a very simple question that only Darrius can answer. And that question is, “Do I want to be exceptional??”. And if the answer is yes, Darrius has to put in an unbelievable amount of time to make himself so. No one can do it for him, and no one but Darrius can answer that question yes or no. 99.99% of individuals answer “no” that to question. There’s a reason for that. Because as soon as you decide you are going to be exceptional, very very very few individuals that are going to be there with you. It is a very very lonely place, but the rewards are very very substantial.

  21. THREE RING CIRCUS Says:

The Raiders will usher in a new era of many wins and dishing out constant beat downs. Im lovin it. Heres to the begining of something good. Heres to a solid 8-8 season and eventually a 10 plus win seasons in the years to come. LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hes out to prove Chris Carter and the rest of those classless ESPN analyst what he is capable of. The draft is all a crap shoot and we have to hit it big eventually. The Raiders have a hard working player with tremendous upside and untapped ability. We needed a receiver in the draft and we got one. Not some money hungry pre moddonna that wants to hold out for a few million more.

  25. THREE RING CIRCUS Says:

DHB stretch that field and continue to get double covered and you will earn every single paycheck he has recieved. 9 VS 10 provides great odds for the passing game. JR just find that free man and we are good.

  26. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Wow, Oakglenn. So, basically, if Darius wants to be exceptional, he has to decide for himself that he wants to be exceptional. Wow. You should make motivational tapes.

  27. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

The draft was not a crap shoot. Crabtree is a sure thing and the only reason he’s holding out is because both he and the niners know that any team other than the Raiders looking for a receiver would have picked him at 6. Al Davis CHOSE to gamble, and his gambling has been less than stellar. The last solid bet he made was in 1998. He’s been crapping out ever since. I just hope Cable takes control of this football team and doesn’t cow tow to Davis. He already knocked out one of Davis’s guys, so let’s see.

It’s the same as anything else, the more you do it the better you become.I admit I always said Jmac shot himself and the team in the foot 4 holding out,but business is business I guess.I think we will see a marked improvment this year in Jmac and by the end of next year DHB will be on fire.Thats just the way it is,imo

clearly, you do not appreciate Maddenraider’s resilience…

there is no beating… there is no punishment… there is no amount of humiliation that will get him to shut-up…

the Raiders could go undefeated for the next two seasons and win both super bowls…

    and Maddenraider will:

    1) say that the raiders are still only 56-72 since 2002…

    2) say that until Al Davis retires they will never win 3 super bowls in a row…

    3) say that Al Davis deserves no credit because it wa Tom Cable standing up to him that allowed anything good to happen…

so ??? give up on MR… he is not a Raider fan…

but he loves Gruden and Kiffie !!!

    ——————————————————-

I second that motion! Jerry had it right when he said the real comparison is between Chaz and Brabtree not Crabtree and DHB.

I always say I will never forget the way they went after that young guy at the draft. ESPN was wrong for that especially loud mouth Chris Carter. His son is a WR at Ohio State Univ. and I can not wait for him to get doged on draft day! If he even makes it to the NFL.

ALl of the other teams had DHB ranked higher than the the other WRs. With no one else to trade with he would have been gone by our next pick. Nicks was the only other WR ranked close and they said he put on weight and already ran a low 4.5 40 time. Crabtree dropped like a rock when everyone found out he was a pain in the @$$. Now look this guy is not in camp and then made a threat to sit out the whole season if need be. Nwever worked out at the combine, bad foot, bad attitude.

As we know high paid TO bad attitude clones with God given ability only gets you so far after they bring your team down. This guy already has a crew of people going around with him and he has not even made the big bucks yet.

Based on what the youngsters and ROOKS say about him, he has been a good mentor. I am not a fan of walker, however he does wear the silver and black so i will support him. Moreover if he does bring it that would be another added viable option to the offense.

Sept. 5: Roster cutdown to maximum of 53 players. – A week from Saturday

    – So with the Raiders needing to cut five players within the next week who are those five?
    (totally scooping JMcD)

My take with the first five…

    Compas, Jonathan – G
    Bayes, Shawn – WR
    Franklin, Will – WR
    Schmitt, Ricky – P
    drum roll for number 5……
    Sands, Terdell – DT

Perhaps replace Sands or one of the two WRs with Gary Russell or Marcel Reece or Luke Lawton

Last day of camp Nation! Time to get down to buisness. Good to here Russell and his receivers are getting that timing down. I think Zach Millers statments say it all. Once the timing is there the O will be unstoppable.

They will have to be though if we can’t stop the run. Gonna have to put up 40 a game if we can’t get that fixed to a respectable level.

    ……………………………………………..

Ha-haa, I was being sarcastic about scoring 40 a game LOL. No way that happens but…

This is true, a successull offense is the best cure for a struggling deffense. Just gotta squeak out 9 wins this year and start on the D next year. I think it can be done fasho!

I bought dirt in the high desert with a national park as my backyard, dug a well, septic, designed and built a block house by myself out of pocket. The highest electric bill has been 68 bucks. No water bill, no septic or sanitation bill.
I saved some money during the boom and thats also innovative since I am sitting on my butt with little work lately but theres beans and flour in the pantry so I will survive a little longer.

  132. RaiderTW Says:

The Oakland Raiders drafted Brandon Myers to help ease the blocking workload of fellow tight end Zach Miller, but halfway through the preseason it’s been the rookie’s pass-catching skills that have stood out most. Myers, a sixth-round selection and the last player the Raiders grabbed in this year’s NFL draft, has been one of the team’s biggest surprises of training camp.
    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/oak

  133. CJ Legend 34 Says:

During the draft if we were picking a WR I favored Crabtree initally until I started to hear about his cocky attitude on viisits to other franchises. The Browns needed a WR bad man and they passed on Crabtree, Seahawks passed him as well.

Now lets see after our pick at 7 lets assume Crabtree was chosen anyway by San Fran at 10. The Bills 11, Eagles 19, Vikings 22, Giants 29, Titans 30 were all looking for big WRs. So if we wanted Crabtree and waited until the second round the odds of us getting him were not to great. Maybe but NY really had DHB in their sights. I don’t think he would have made it to our second round pick.

I always felt that out of the top 3 WRs Crabtree, Maclin and DHB. That DHB had the most upside. Crabtree is at his full potential, Maclin had a similar game to JLH and was not that big. DHBs size, speed, and work ethic can make him more than just a speedster.

By the way no one is talking about Maclin having trouble holding on to the ball fielding punts as well.

  134. Andrews Mom Says:

If the depression really starts swinging I am really gonna get innovative. I plan to hire out as a gigilo to all the old retired women around here.

  135. RaiderTW Says:

The deal that San Francisco 49ers’ first-round pick Michael Crabtree(notes) keeps refusing is apparently worth $20 million over five years, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, with $16 million of that guaranteed. With incentives, it can apparently grow to be as high as $26.5 million. Not bad for a kid just out of college in the middle of a recession, right?

Even though Crabtree appears ready to just sit out the season and re-enter next summer’s draft in order to get more cash, the 49ers apparently haven’t upped the offer since it was first made in June. Crabtree, who was picked tenth overall in the draft this summer, supposedly wants more money than seventh-overall pick receiver Darrius Heyward-Bay got from the Oakland Raiders. But the Niners reportedly don’t want to give him anything more than ninth-overall pick defensive lineman B.J. Raji(notes) got from the Green Bay Packers.

It remains highly doubtful that a deal will get signed before the first official game of the season.

That is three of the five o-linemen I am worried about…hopefully they all have great years, but until they prove it during the regular season I am not going to anoint this offense the next 1990’s Dallas Cowboys just yet.

Also, I’d like to see DHB make a catch in a game, Russell complete closer to 60% of his passes, and McFadden and Bush get the majority of carries before I fly off the handle and call this offense impossible to stop, lol.

Point taken… but Zmiller who I think has a much better handle on things than either you or I, made that statement not me. I said it is impossible to shut down both DHB and the running game. Which very different from what you are indicating. That is true of any team that has that kind of speed outside and that kind of power inside. But you’d have to know a little about football to understand that.

Where ZMiller and I agree is that when the timing betweens passer and reciever is tight the passing game will be unstoppable (his words not mine) I do however think as I’ve said by midseason the passing game will start to take off and by years end no one will look forward to playing the Raiders.

    _______________________________________

    RMR:
I don’t know what else Cable needs to do to prove to you that he has taken control of this team. He is a warrior, he has stressed fundamentals all the way through, and he has galvanized this team with a fighting spirit. Does he need to come over to where you are and knock you out of your chair?
    =====================
First off, how is a coach a “warrior”?? Makes no sense. He’s a coach. That’s it. Every single head coach in the NFL does what you mention above, bar none. Some outlandishly so, others in their own way.

Wasn’t the same said about Shell? “A warrior”? “Going to bring back the fighting spirit”? “Back to basics”?

These are grown men. Professionals. This isn’t high school, rah rah crap. They don’t respond to “warrior” beliefs or “galvanized with fighting spirit”.

If a player comes into the league WITHOUT A FIGHTING SPIRIT?? You don’t last a week.

Cable is a slob. Players know that. Cable hasn’t done squat, himself, on the field. Players know that. Cable is a hypocrite when he stresses “control”, AND PLAYERS KNOW THAT. Cable isn’t in charge, Al is, AND EVERYONE KNOWS THAT.

    Just the way it is.

Raiders gave up 5.3 yds /carry last year.

As I said before, that means if they run every down, you get a 1st down every 2 plays.

Fortunately, no team did that, so we won a few games.

Oddly enough they did were in the middle of the league as far as rushing td’s.

So they tightened up when it counted.

    Dline hasn’t improved that much.

But if Raider offense is a juggernaut, other teams’ll get desperate and start passing.
And that will give the Dline time to improve.

Next year Dline will be their focus.
    Playoffs this year.
    No doubt.

When players see that we have a real team again, you’ll see top notch free agent d lineman coming to the Raiders.

Right now they’re listening to stupid loudmouths who will still trash the Raiders when they start playing well this yr.

Also, I want to say that as far as C on this Oline I was fine with Grove and defended him many times in here. Yes he was injured a bit too much for my taste but he was a very good technician. But most in here thought he was the worst center in the league until now(because he’s on another team) Satele is a concern for me I’m not sure he is as technically sound as Grove was.

However under Cable I’m sure he’ll get better just looking at what Cable has done with Green says it all. Now they say Green is the worst RT in the league( far from it) but it goes with every player on this team. If they don’t like them then they suck. While Green wont get many All Pro honors anytime soon he is very serviceable. This kid Johnson could be what we’re looking for at RG. And this would be a solid line. And when Barnes is healthy we’ll have depth at RT.

And he seems to wait until we get in the red zone to F that up. The only thing saving him so far in preseason is JRuss getting rid of the ball quicker. RT and RG are the weak links on the line. And Satele was on his back or whiffing more often than not.

Again common sense makes no sens with you Dakota, I’m referring to the RUNNING game and the speed at WR working in combo. Get it? the plays when a HB get’s the ball and runs. You ever seen those?

Anyone that knows football knows trying to stop a power running game and also stop deep speed puts the defense in a quandry (limbo if you will). I was not just talking of the passing game when I used the word Impossible. I mentioned the passing game will start to take off by midseason. And yes with assistance of a fully functional OLine. Which should go without saying. But nonetheless I do agree with ZMiller when the timing is tight.

But enough of this banter. Your point is well taken.

  214. priesttj Says:

I see this team as fledgling trying to establish it self in the league. How long that will take, who knows. But the principle parties such as Russell, DMC, Bush and the WR’s are all attempting to establish them selves as NFL starters.

Saying what they will or wont do this year is a shot in the dark. Health is key. But this is a very young team that first needs to gain confidence in THEMSELVES. You can’t win sonsiteantly until you have that.

So I see us using this year to establish who we are. That’s defensively and offensively. The sooner they do that the sooner you can say where they will end up.

Anything is anybodies guess yours as well as mine. They don’t have the confidence it takes to be dominant at anything. And we’ll see how long it takes to gain that confidence.

  225. jhill Says:

Are there some things to be encouraged about?

    Absolutely!

Fact of the matter is there are some HUGE questions marks that need to be addressed before you can talk about this team being a serious contender. Now if we want to play the “we can win the AFC West game”, then that’s different. Doesn’t mean shyt to me in terms of how good our teams is though because every other team in the division is awful, IMO. I really think 7 wins should be able to win this division, and that is a F’in joke.

Green and Carlisle on the right side don’t allow me to watch the games comfortably. I just KNOW they are going to get a penalty, or miss a block, or something, and at the most F’d up time. They are old, and need to be replaced.

Satele has been a huge disappointment. I was really looking forward to his play, but I’m just not seeing it so far. The guy is whiffing on everything, and on his back at other times. Of course not every play, but more often than need be. And to think he was running that I’ll be a pro bowler smack. Fugg!

Dline? Well, I tend to think it is more of an OLB problem, and Trevor Scott isssue, but whatever! The hole is a big as can be, and it needs to be plugged.

Fix those things, then we can talk.

    _______________________________________

    RMR:
I don’t know what else Cable needs to do to prove to you that he has taken control of this team. clearly, you do not appreciate Maddenraider’s resilience…

there is no beating… there is no punishment… there is no amount of humiliation that will get him to shut-up…

the Raiders could go undefeated for the next two seasons and win both super bowls…

    and Maddenraider will:

    1) say that the raiders are still only 56-72 since 2002…

    2) say that until Al Davis retires they will never win 3 super bowls in a row…

    3) say that Al Davis deserves no credit because it was Tom Cable standing up to him that allowed anything good to happen…

so ??? give up on MR… he is not a Raider fan…

    RAIDERS SUFFER PRE-GAME TRAGEDY

Alameda, Ca. (AP) – A promising newcomer to the Raiders receiving corps is in intensive care this afternoon after falling into a coma during pregame stretching at the Colisseum.

Wide receiver Florida Pete fell ill soon after taking the field, complaining about how heavy the shoulder pads and helmet felt in the oppressive eighty degree heat. After receiving an IV treatment, Florida Pete returned to the field only to collapse while trying to touch his toes.

Sebastian Janakowski administered CPR and Florida Pete briefly regained consciousness and smiled before being rushed off the field.

Coach Tom Cable hopes to have Florida Pete back soon, adding “our trainers tell me his system was overwhelmed by lactic acid…the first it has experienced since training camp in 1978.”

The way I see it is no matter how many points we score when the 4th quarter comes and teams are driving for the winning touchdown or field goal and our 31st ranked run defense is tired it wont be fun to watch.

Again I say this: to get above .500 we will have to be better against the run. Or holding on to leads in the 4th quarter will be impossible.

  252. AZ Raider Says:

I can care less about Vick. I like the Eagles though so I’ll be rootin for ‘em fasho! Desaun Jackson is a local guy outta Cal. I always root for my Cali players if I can (meaning they don’t play for AFC west opposition).

  256. jhill Says:

    I hear ya Lefty …

If I said LDE earlier, I meant RDE, Trevor Scott’s position. That play that went to Ellis’ side was again a bad play bu Alston. Ellis got blocked down by the inside WR. That was a good block. Meanwhile, roid boy Alston was lost, and gave up the edge. One on one with a WR, he should’ve made that play.

A side note to these plays … It should really help some of you understand how good Nnamdi is in run support. As good as he is, Routt is awful. FLAT OUT AWFUL!

You beat me to it Vegas. (You slow down!)

  263. vegas raider Says:

I know our D got shredded against the run, but if I were Niner faithful I would be extremely worried about their QB’s. They looked about as bad as our Run D did.

  264. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

Yeah we are talking about a Tony Dungy defense that rarely was ranked that low. Like Vegas said they fixed it.

We never were good (like Dungy’s defenses were)so your stats are skewed and do not apply in this situation.

Dungy’s defense was very very good for a long time then had a slump for a half a season while Bob Sanders was out, then Bob came back and restored the defense to what it once was.

To them that was a half a season slump for us its been a 6 YEAR slump!! Big difference there sports fan.

I hope I’m wrong but I’m willing to bet that the Commissioner is going to want a copy of that investigative report and when all things are done and said: Cable going to get suspended for 4 to 6 games and we’ll have Hackett or Marshall as our acting Head Coach during that period. I can’t imagine the NFL Commissioner
allowing “alleged violence, with a possible broken jaw, by a head coach on an assistant coach.” Not in a league that’s so concerned with image and respectability and appropriate punishments for the “perks” involved.

  289. Raidervill Says:

    Concerns…

TScott – I have seen him pushed around in the first two games big time. Can he handle the edge? Is he a quality starter? JRich seems to playing well in preseason (granted against backups) but might he be the better option? Too bad Shaugnessy has been nicked up.

LBS – Always getting blocked and never shooting the gaps. I saw Brown get knocked out of the hole several time against the Niners…is he really an up grade from Mo? We need the best three tacklers on the field. They really are the key to the run failures (along with the DE’s) in my mind.

C – So far I have not seen an upgrade from Grove to Satele. Yes its been a short time and he is in a new system, but we can’t afford a drop off in any position on the oline. Green concerns me as always, but it appears no other option with Barnes down.

WR – Only becasue Chaz is hurt. Otherwise I think this position is set for the future, if DHB continues to progress. JWalk/Murphy need to step in and become that dependable, intermediate target JRuss can depend on now that Chaz is out.

Cable – Like how he works with Al(a must) and how he has ran training camp, but I’m still worried about his game day management. Can he make the proper play calls while managing the game like an efficient head coach? Is he going to lose games because of some bad decisions like he did last year? Hopefully he has learned form the mistakes…becasue he has a golden opportunity in front of him.

The one player who turned off more than half the league during his NFL Combine visits — diva was the buzzword — dropped from his lofty perch as definitely a top-five player, athletically, to not even being the first wide receiver taken in last April’s draft. There is always one in the top-10 in the draft every year that is out of the league in less than 5 years, he seems like the obvious choice.

  297. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

Andrew’s Mom, where you been for so long? The MBush news has been good, but the Fargas news is disappointing – he’s still considered a “starter”.

More importantly, Al found an unheralded phenom QB out of Occidental College named Danny Southwick to push JaOctopus to his potential. This kid is on a mission from God and is already known in Napa as Football Jesus. Southwick is currently Hackett’s “intern” sidekick, but don’t you believe it!

Al wants to win before he moves the team to Reno (far east bay), so Danny could be in line for a battlefield promotion any day now.

  298. Brien the General Says:

Schooled? You have done zero schooling.

The fact that DHB is out there working with his team means he gets better each and every day. Has Crabtree improved on anything that will help him nithe NFL thus far? The season hasn’t even started and you want to label the guy a bust. It isn’t like you are making a rational claim based on watching him through a full regular season game.

As for Mitchell yep he has been injured, but guess what he still been with his teammates. Crabtree cant say that and its embarrassing. He is well on his way to losing millions and the Niners have a wasted pick instead of a player that could help their team improve.

From 1946 to 1980 SF was a joke.In the late 1970s the NFL was heavily concerned about the failing franchise in SF. The NFL powers paid AL DAVIS to find a suitable owner who would brings a winning franchise to the city. Not only did Al get the Debartilos in the door he suggested their coach.

Wait wait wait wait there. You mean to tell me Al Davis is responsible for the 49ers being a successful franchise that they were in 80s and 90s? Without al Davis the 49ers are a tragic joke that never wins the big one(like the Sf Giants)?

49er fans need to know Al is your daddy and he made you
    =============================

    =============================

Richochet: First off, you can’t even discuss the Raiders. How do you expect to discuss the Niners?

Now, for fun, I’ll torch your inept ass on this as well.
    Pay attention, foolish boy.
Al did NOT get the DeBartelo’s in with the league, moron.
First off Valley, a FORMER partner of Al Davis, who Al now hated, tried to buy the 49ers from the Morobitos widows, who both held the team since their husbands died and ran it for over a decade.
Al went and basically begged them to not sell to Valley, because he didn’t want him that close. Also thought they were selling too low, which devalued the Raiders. At one point the Moribitos widows asked Al if they could give them advice on selling, of which they would pay him a fee.
In the mean time, the Debartelo’s had already been in the market, looking for a team. JOE THOMAS is the one who informed Debartelo Sr. about SF.

Before they even considered buying SF, Debartelo told Thomas he would buy ONLY if Thomas signed on as GM, even before the deal was even considered. Then it was brought to SF, where Al advised the widows on the correct steps.
Al NEVER contacted the Debartelo’s, fool.
Al NEVER was paid by the NFL powers, you moron.
The NFL NEVER got involved on any of it.

And Al did NOT suggest Bill Walsh, cotton ball.

Pay attention for schooling, period 2.

Walsh worked for Brown. In Cinc. Debartelo’s are from Ohio. They knew all about Walsh. Walsh THOUGHT he was going to take over for Brown when he stepped down. Brown and Walsh butted heads on many ways to run a team while Walsh was an asst. with Brown, and Brown wasn’t comfortable with Walsh’s differing views from his old school ways.

Brown informed Walsh he was going to be promoted, but expected Walsh to stay on as an asst, and that he wouldn’t release him from his contract. Walsh said “my contract is up next week, and I’m gone. Brown stated he would do everything he could to blackball Walsh, even stating ‘You’ll never be a HC in this league.”
Debartelo Sr. knew about Brown’s comments, and didn’t want Walsh. Eddie Jr. met with Walsh anyway, and after their first meeting Eddie Jr. knew he wanted Walsh. Walsh was still coaching Stanford at the time.
Eddie Jr. asked a lot of people what they thought of Walsh, including Al Davis.
All Al did was verify to Eddie that he made a good hire in Walsh, that he liked him when Walsh was with the Raiders for one year.
Lots of people knew Eddie Jr. had decided on Walsh since their first meeting, which was long before he chatted with Al.

BTW..moron..that one year Walsh had with the Raiders? Was, and I quote Walsh: “The worst year I ever spent in football, anywhere. I learned from the Raiders on how NOT to run a team.”

    THAT’S A QUOTE FROM WALSH..

Like I said, Brien, stick to stupid little comments. Less chance of getting reamed that way. You’ve JUST BEEN SCHOOLED..AGAIN…STILL!!

And Az??? Get back to saying nothing because I GUARANTEE YOU you won’t have a single thing to say regarding this either. You’re defenseless, and that’s a well known fact.

Richochet: Above schooling says you shouldn’t play outside after dark.

Brien the Girl Scout says: The fact that DHB is out there working with his team means he gets better each and every day. Has Crabtree improved on anything that will help him nithe NFL thus far? The season hasn’t even started and you want to label the guy a bust. It isn’t like you are making a rational claim based on watching him through a full regular season game.

Richochet: Sorry peanut, but go google Bey. Comments everywhere that a #7 pick SHOULDN’T HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO CATCH A FOOTBALL..so yeah, lots of comments about Al’s silly drafting, both round one AND round two.

    ———————————-

Brien the Girl Scout: As for Mitchell yep he has been injured, but guess what he still been with his teammates. Crabtree cant say that and its embarrassing. He is well on his way to losing millions and the Niners have a wasted pick instead of a player that could help their team improve.

Richochet: “at least he’s with his team”?? Have you no idea how dumb that sounds? Of COURSE he’s with his team. He wasn’t even on anyone’s charts, and Al makes him a second round pick. The guy was in total shock, and GLADLY TOOK WHATEVER MONEY WAS PRESENTED..just like Bey did.

BTW..at this moment? There are approx: 30 players in EVERY camp who won’t even make the teams rosters.
Showing up doesn’t mean it’s a good choice, fool.

  303. AZ Raider Says:

Bey and Mitchell? WTF are you talking about? When did we start talking about Bey and Mitchell, let alone ask your opinion of anything. No one engages you bro. You jump into other peoples discussions with knocks on the Raiders. It’s obvious your team suks so bad you have to jump on the “Raider Bashing Bandwagon”. It’s old just like your trolling game in here, but the Raider nation welcomes the hate as we always have. It’s the Raider way. We stand behind our team with Pride, win or lose, unlike you, who are too scared to share with us who your team is. Doesn’t matter, there’s only one team on the planet that has fans like you… Your cover in blown.

They just have the misfortune of having to deal with the Bungholes who are dumb and cheap…if A. Smith had been drafted by Oakland he would have been in camp from day one like DHB.

  307. Richochet Says:

I root for the Raiders through thick and thin, 24/7, 365. I get happiness and joy as well as sadness and anger. Its like life in that respect and I would not have it any other way. Its like riding an emotional rollar coaster. Spiritual enlightment and the meaning of life all rolled into one.I love it

I neither worry, nor fret over, nor even care about last years record. That is the past and I have no control over that just as I have no control over how the team is ran, who makes draft picks, who decides how much to pay whom, or who to play.

I root for Al because he is THE RAIDER, he always has been and I will go down with the ship standing at his side, be he senile or be he sane.

I use to love sticking it to all the haters in bars and at work and relatives who all hate the Raiders. That was one of the best parts about being a Raider fan is everyone loved us or hated us and most hated us.

We are the rebels of the NFL and its even better now that all the talking heads on the one eyed hypnotist are singing the demise of Al and his team. It will feel that much better when Al proves them wrong again.

Well this is the year that we start sticking it to everyone and anyone again. Oh boy oh boy, its gonna feel great.
I love underdogs and I love rebels and I love pirates.

    Best year ever!!!

  309. OAKlifer Says:

Sorry, but history is already saying that Bey was a bad pick for #7, and that your round two pick makes this years draft the WORST of any team.

So far those day one reports are dead on, and Bey and Mitchell are both sub par.

    **********************************

    Hey ball boy,

DHB follows up big Wednesday with catch on a bullet going over his head in end zone.

And yet another TD for DHB in 7 on 7 vs scout team. If only it was always this easy, at least it builds confidence.

Though Heyward-Bey dropped one pass, he also made a highlight reel catch on a pass thrown by Charlie Frye. He remains on track to be one of the Raiders’ starting receivers when they open the season on September 14 against the Chargers.

    – Rookie Darrius Heyward-Bey ran right as he reached back to his left, all the while starting to fall down on a pass route over the middle.
This is the exact sort of play that spelled incomplete pass all of training camp, particularly for a wide receiver who struggled enough to make the easy catches, never mind the spectacular.
Not this time. Heyward-Bey came down with a tumbling catch in traffic, much to the delight of his teammates and coaches during practice Wednesday in Napa.

That’s why the Raiders drafted him with the No. 7 overall pick of April’s draft, when most everyone thought they were nuts. Only now is Heyward-Bey starting to make common and difficult catches alike while limiting his daily drops to one, maybe two a day.

    He is making steady improvement!!!!

DHB double tips INT to Napo Harris, ( He is even on the field to make mistakes…you know the things real men make in life in order to become the fathers sons brothers widereceiver that some of are today you dnt learn from your mistakes sitting around (40-whining..) about millions of dollars when you will be paid more than your whole family has ever made in there excistance….Further more DHB is has more couth class and poise to be one of the best players in the draft last year and your a fool or blind to belive otherwise.

And for Mike Mitchell aka (The M Word)

If being injured your rookie season and not being able to play much makes you a bust then go talk to guys like Mike Bush and tell them the same thing Mike has had a ligring injury that has prevented him from getting on the field any person with common sense would tell you that yuo cant fail unless you try at something he has yet been able to try….he one day will be healthy and destory some WR’s and RB’s…. Should we have picked brace yes!!! Did we no is it Mikes fault no Give the damn kid a chance….you remaind me of the rich little neighbor kid who would always “need” to be right..and if he wasnt he would make up a lie to tell or run and tell his momma that some one had made him cry….man im embarrassed for you!!1

I REALLY hope he goes back into the draft, and when he is drafted #25 next year, I can’t wait to see his face!

  317. Brien the General Says:

Do you guys hear the lies of Bitchochet? First off the 49ers were having trouble as a franchise for years. They didn’t have a winning product at all and those old widows sure weren’t going to turn it into one. The NFL period votes on who gets to own teams. Certain owners got stroke to alter that vote or what have you. Al Davis in the late 70s had much stroke and wasn’t as crazy as he is now. You really think NFL powers wont want to have a guy who already knows what it takes to be successful in the Bay Area’s advice on the matter? Come on the NFL has much mob ties. Dont you know any damn thing? Al and Eddie Sr had much mob ties. Its bigger than just the game you fool. Dont you know anything?

  318. AZ Raider Says:

“And with the 7th pick, of the 2009 NFL draft, the Oakland Raiders select, Wide reciever out of Maryland, Darrius Heyward-Bey”

As the boos erupt in Canton, and the “analysts” start their bashing, poor Michael Crabtrees’ lip quivers and his eyes well up like he’s going to cry. I’ll never forget the sight of that. Then when Singletary punked him in camp he cried again. There is something wrong with this guy and Al saw it… So did 8 other teams.

Sorry Richochet but your team fukt up…

  319. El Dirty Says:

Agreed, As far as Smith is concerned, He has had issues in some way or another since before the draft. He may be a great player but at what cost besides money? I’m just glad I never have to see him run with is shirt off again.

Debartelo ALREADY DECIDED TO BUY THE 49ERS.

The WIDOWS WERE SURE ABOUT THE TECHNICAL SIDE OF IT.
For that matter, AL DAVIS ALMOST PREVENTED THE SALE.

    What? You didn’t know that?

Yeah,..at the last minute, after the sale price of 17 million had been decided on, where Debartelo Sr flew to SF to sign the papers, Al, hoping to boost the value of the Raiders, suggested the widows change the price to 17.5 million.
Debartelo Sr. walked out, realizing Davis was a slimeball, and state ‘I don’t do business like that.’

Only after Eddie Jr. showed polls about the value of the league did Sr. change his mind, and sign.

Considering the quote is IN BILL WALSH’S BOOK maybe you should think before you post.

And stop with the “widows couldn’t find any suitors”…

JOE THOMAS BROUGHT THE IDEA OF THE 49ERS TO THE DEBARTELO’S.

Debartelo’s signed JOE THOMAS AS A GM BEFORE THEY EVEN CAME TO DISCUSS THE 49ERS.

Al Davis was never involved in them deciding, or in them being aware of the 49ers.

Al was paid a fee, from the widows, because they didn’t understand the nuances of selling the team, that’s all.

A reporter from San Francisco heard about the story and had asked John if he could write about him in the Chronicle so Tyrone agreed. The reporter pulled out his notepad and started writing, “49er fan from San Francisco saves friend from certain death in vicious dog attack.”

    John said, “I’m not a 49er fan.”

So the reporter started writing again. “Giants fan from San Francisco saves friend from certain death in vicious dog attack.”

John said, “I’m not a Giants fan either.”

The reporter finally asked, “What the hell kind of fan are you then?”

John with great pride stood up and said, “I’m a F*cking Die Hard Oakland Raider fan fool.”

In the early 70s didnt Debartilo own the Penguins? Al back then knew how to pick a solid winner and Eddie D was perfect because he will go that extra mile to get success. You think the NFL heads didnt go to Al to find a suitable person for that operation since SF was a failing mission? Be serious. and you phuckin idiot Al Davis suggested Joe Thomas
