O’Neill tells local paper he’ll be a Raider again

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, August 28th, 2009 at 3:47 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Chris O’Neill, the tight end who was asked by Al Davis to move inside to linebacker only to waived before camp began, could be in uniform Saturday against New Orleans.

At least that is what O’Neill, a Boise State product, told his local paper.

No word on who will be cut to make room for O’Neill on the 80-man roster.

O’Neill had a tryout with the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 16. He concedes his future is likely on the practice squad rather than the 53-man roster.

The Raiders are without Kirk Morrison (elbow), Isaiah Ekejiuba (shoulder) and possibly rookie Slade Norris (calf) against New Orleans. O’Neill was learning to play middle linebacker, which is where both Morrison and Ekejiuba play. Ricky Brown’s backup in the middle of late has been Sam Williams.

Very slow in here for a gameday.

Anyone read the USA article where Jamarcus admitted he has crossed over the 300 pound line a few times?
    ……………………………………………..

As long as he is as mobile as he can scramble like he has I don’t care if he breaks 400 LOL.

Mario Henderson our MVP today watch. He’s gonna put it down.

It’s easy to deceive people 70yrs old & above. That’s who watches that moron & makes it #1. I only watch because a rightwing friend & I have a deal for a week he’ll watch Jon Stewert & Obermann if I will watch Beck. So far his idea of stewert’s show has changed completely because he has never seen it only believes what Fox says. If you only watch Fox you will never get the whole story + lies. Believe me I’ve watched.
    Nnamdi21, you are SO right.

    Nmamdi,

When I made a simple comment about a previous admin tax-cuts, for 100% of the people not 95%, you said I was “defending the Nazi’s”.

Well being Italian, and from a military family, that kind of struck a nerve. I told you about it, you never responded and started posting later, and never acknowledged it or even said, “not what I meant, this is what I meant”.

The comment itself didn’t piss me off as much as you just glossing over it. Choose your words more carefully my friend.

  • Nnamdi21

Lets hope the Raiders show up for this game. This is the PLANNED for gmae this pre season to kind of work the kinks out and see where we may actually be.

N.O. has said they want to evaluate and work run this game, but still not sure its an indication of where we really are against the run considering who’s NOT playing on defense.

Interested inthe O too. can we run or is our line sh*t now? Cooper Carlisle has been slipping…Satele’s not looking great and Green is well, Green…

Not even sure about Henderson’s run blocking.

Like to see J Marc connect with his wides more too. C’mon Bey and Murph!

    255. For now, while I’m allowed, I’ll speak my mind.

If you’re offended by my saying they’re nazi like, maybe its because your one of them.

With your background you’d think you’d know better but then again, military people often follow blindly and support Reps who ARE the military.

BTW, who’s side were the Italians on in WWII?

IF you did you’re home work you’d see that my NAZI remark IS justifiable whether you like it or not.

The complete lack of compassion, the adoration of oppresive and killing technology, insatiable lust for power ect. ect. I could go on but pearls before the swine and a waste of time.

Frankly, I didn’t gloss over it, I probably just stopped reading your stuff because much of it, unrealated to football is patently ridiculous and shows your level of self delusion.

You’d think with your back ground you’d do some home work, but apparently that doesn’t suit you because of your cirlces and workles ect.

Fuk it, if I were one of the bad guys I might not want to admit it either…

Really hope Jamarcus gets the opportunity to run a 2-minute drill at the end of the half.

Experience is so crucial in those situations (when to ground the ball, getting guys up to the line quickly, when to use TO’s, etc..)

The people of America need to stop argueing over D or R and fox or cnn.
We need to toss out ALL of the politicians. Start over with term limits and no pensions. People need to go to DC to serve not to be served millions of dollars from lobbiest and the taxpayers.

Then they need to adopt a down the middle of the road approach with no extremes. Its the best we can hope for.

I’ll be paying close attention to C, RG, and RT today. I think those 3 positions have been coming up short so far this offseason. So much so that Cable had to go back to coaching the Oline this week.

Defensively, Trevor Scott and John Alston HAVE to step their game up.

    Huff at FS.

We need to get younger at RG and RT. Green was brought in to be a backup 3 years ago. He’s 3 years older and needs to be replaced. Already would be had it not been for the Barnes injury.

Carlisle’s penalties irk the shyt out of me more than anything else, especially since he’s a veteran. He’s geeting more penalties b/c his skills are diminishing.

Just saying that those are 2 positions that need to step their level of play up based on the first 2 games. Preseason or not, blocking is blocking and they haven’t been getting the job done.

Sweet, lots of trash-talking should be going on tomorrow night, lol. Feelings may be hurt

  • EMRaiders

    Now for some Raider talk.

I am interested to see how the TEs will be used today. I’m not sure who the better blocker is, Miller or Myers. They both seem to have great hands, but I think Miller is the better route runner. And maybe the better blocker as well, which might give Myers more opportunities at receptions maybe?
Another thing that I want to see, is how the rookie WRs will do. Murphy seems to be a solid #2 or #3. But that would push Higgins out, and then, does that mean that DHB will be #1? What about Chaz? What I really want to see, is Walker. Is he back to his form as he claims to be? I hope he gets some time with the first team today, to get a real sense as to where he is. If we can, we should keep Nick Miller. He reminds me of Welker…I know, it’s been said before, but he really does.
The RBs are solid, so I’m not too worried about that position. However, it’ll be interesting to see how Bush does against the NO startes vs McF against NO second team.
JR should keep improving…at least hopefully. If takes a dive today, then we will know he still has a VERY long road ahead of him, compared to if he does well and improves from last week, we would know that he is getting closer to true #1 pick status.
I have not seen Henderson do anything wrong so far. He’s holding his ground as a legit LT. Who would’ve known… Maybe if JR got a little more tough love he would do the same?…
I personally think we should keep Gradkowski as the #3. He seems to have heart. Not that Frye doesn’t, but for some reason I notice it more on Grad.
Defensively, well, the usual. Somebody needs to stop the run. They should assign one player to the RB on all downs and make him responsible for him. His main duty is to bring the RB down. Maybe we could have a #2 and #3 to back him up. Obviously this would come into effect given the RB gets passed the Dline or runs to the edge. The Dline should be the #1 stopper, but well…. you know.
Our passing D is solid enough, I think. Though it would’ve been nice to see how good Mitchell really is.

    Those are my two cents…

  • jhill

You guys should put some general rules in your drafts like no Donkeys, Bolts, or Chiefs player can be drafted. And everyone must take a Raider by round 2.

  • jhill

As well as Meyers is playing, Stewart is playing just as well. Especially at the primary job of blocking.

Arguably our deepest position. Cable BETTER roll with a lot of 2 TE sets this year. Will really help the run game as well.

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

Stewart made a tough catch last week, is a huge ST contributor, and is our player rep and good presence in the locker room.

With that being said, Myers looks like a stud, and might warrant more playing time than Stewart ultimately.

2 TE sets would be good except that would only allow us to either have only one RB or one WR. Though if we go one WR, that would allow us to put in an extra RB (McF and Bush maybe?) and that would be good. I hope to see that. that would lessen our so called weakness on offense (WR) and increase our strenghts (TE and RB). It will also be great on play action plays.

    4eva,

Can you see my pic on the FFL site?

  • jhill

I agree Vegas, don’t get me wrong.

That is why I think that the 2 TE set should be our base formation. All 3 of those guys would play in a rotation, and it would be a true position of strength.

It would also allow Reece to make the team.

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

From what I know, the two TE set is best used in short-yardage, play-action scenarios right? So for us to really be able to utilize the formation, we need to get good chunks of yardage on first down (i.e. no Fargas up the middle on 1st)

  • jhill

I prefer the single back set with two TEs….

I do see a 2 RB package in short yardage and goaline situations. You could also have a package where Bush and McFadden start off in the backfield and McFadden goes in motion to the WR position. That would create a ridiculous mismatch with a LB or S man up on McFadden.

  • jhill

    Oh no, Vegas.

Many many options present itself with the 2 TE set. Myers and Miller on the field, the opposing team would HAVE to account for that. Spreads the middle of the defense out or forces them into a zone set. If you can see the advantages of running that set in goalline and short yardage, then you obviously see the benefits of it as a run formation.

Speaking of that Zone coverage, think how that helps the WRs and plays out of the backfield to Bush or McFadden.

I could go on and on, and I don’t know shyt compared to the guys getting paid to do it.

  • http://blstb.msn.com/i/55/90A2853B6CFBCC2AFC987BB18B832.jpg vegas raider

    JHill,

That’s why I said “from what I know”, lol. Not a big X and O’s guy, but I know that for a two TE set to be effective passing the ball, the opposing team has to fear the run. Short-yardage situations seem to present that.

  • EMRaiders

We should make a playbook and send it to them. We’ll keep it simple. One formation. About 15 to 20 plays. Half runs, half pass, with a few playactions. lol…
