Rookie WRs could open as starters

Some news and notes from Friday’s Raiders walkthrough at their practice facility in Alameda:

– Coach Tom Cable said following practice it is possible the Raiders could open the season on Sept. 14 against the San Diego Chargers starting two rookie wide receivers.

First-round pick Darrius Heyward-Bey and fourth-round selection Louis Murphy were working with the first team and will start against New Orleans, a game which will most closely resemble what the Raiders do in the regular-season.

“I don’t think that’s an issue quite honestly other than the fact that they are rookies,” Cable said. “They’re doing really, really well, both fo them. They just keep getting better and as they have progressed all the time. That’s enabled us to do it.”

With Chaz Schilens out, that leaves Johnnie Lee Higgins, last year’s leading receiver among Raiders wideouts with 22 receptions for 366 yards and four touchdowns, as the No. 3 receiver.

When Al Davis and Cable determine the final roster, wide receiver will be one of the most difficult areas to choose. Schilens, Heyward-Bey, Murphy and Higgins are carved in stone. Javon Walker is showing signs of regaining at least some of his old form and earns $2.3 million in salary in each of the next two years after renegotiating his contract.

If the Raiders were to go with five, as they have in some seasons, there is no room for anyone else. More likely a sixth receiver will come from Nick Miller, Todd Watkins and Jonathan Holland, with Will Franklin and Shawn Bayes not a factor in terms of the 53-man roster.

– Cable isn’t sure how much time Walker will see against New Orleans.

“We’ll see. He’s ready to go, wants to go, and we want him to go,” Cable said. “We’ll just kind of take that as we go into the game.”

– Game-time decisions will be SLB Slade Norris (calf) and FS Hiram Eugene. Eugene has been out the last couple of practices with what Cable called the stomach flu and Eugene said was a pectoral strain. In addressing it Friday, Cable said, “It started out as an illness and really it will be a game-time decision.”

– Those who won’t play include Schilens (foot), T Khalif Barnes (ankle), Kirk Morrison (elbow), S Mike Mitchell (hamstring), C John Wade (stinger), RB Justin Fargas (hamstring), DE Matt Shaughnessy (foot) and LB Isaiah Ekejiuba (shoulder).

– Shaughnessy was off to the side with a member of the athletic training staff running agility drills around cones, indicating he could return for the preseason finale against Seattle.

– The Saints game will be the lone preseason game the Raiders will have prepared for as if it were a regular season game. Rather than look at film of last year’s 34-3 loss in New Orleans, Cable and his staff are preparing for what they’ve seen from the Saints this preseason.

The Saints are 2-0, with a 17-7 win over Cincinnati and a 38-14 triumph over Houston. Attempting to balance their offense after throwing the ball 636 times and running it 398 in 2008, the Saints through two preseason games have 57 rushes for 259 yards and have thrown 60 passes, completing 38, for 477 yards.

“That’s good for us because we still need to work on the run game defensively,” Cable said.

– Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye, competing to be the third quarterback on the roster, may not get much of a chance against the Saints. JaMarcus Russell will start and could play into the early third quarter before giving way to Jeff Garcia.

Garcia will play considerably more than his brief appearance in the last two minutes of the first half against San Francisco.

“I want to see Jeff play, we need to see Jeff play,” Cable said.

– The Raiders went through a walkthrough that lasted less than 45 minutes in preparation for Saturday’s game against the New Orleans Saints.

Players wore T-shirts and sweats or shorts. A few red zone plays for both offense and defense were run at half-speed, as well as some kickoff coverage drills.

It was light enough that some players, not even needing a shower, were headed to their cars before 11 a.m.

– No sign of Mario Henderson on the injury report, but he could have been listed with a tummy ache. Henderson reported Thursday night through his Twitter page that his stomach hurt because after being on a diet through training camp, he binged at Burger King with a triple whopper meal, two pies, two double cheeseburgers, two fish sandwiches and a milk shake.

Apparently unclear on the concept of a public Internet, Henderson noted in an earlier Twitter post he was going to binge on fast food and said, “I ain’t had fast food in 6 months. I kno coach is gon b mad at me but he wont find out . . . ”

Lol Lifer….. Freakin’ Pears must not be showing anything though ’cause you know Cable knows his O-line play if he knows anything. Cable was probably headbutting a wall when Al picked DHB instead of Monroe or Oher.

    ************************

I was shiiiitttiiinn when Monroe was available thought fasho he would anchor our line for years….but Im behind the DHB pick myself and dont get it twisted I made my living as a line coach for a while but the only thing we love more than running the ball is scoring points Cable likes the DHB pick……

I wont be surprised if Mitchell and Norris get red-shirted this year with a bogus injury.

I dont mind. Its worked out with Russell and Bush.

  • SilverAndBlackBleeder

Yea, I’m behind it too, just as I was behind the Derrick Gibson pick though I had tons of friends who were Florida State fans who told me that he was was gonna be a bust. Once your a Raider, I’ll ride for ya, and I’m not mad about DHB. Just wish we could have parlayed that pick into another and still snagged DHB, but that’s old news. Can’t wait to see Schilens patrolling the middle when DHB sends those safeties into the quickest backpedal they’ve ever done before.

Maybe we’ll luck up and someone got Cornell Green some skills for his birthday

    @Richochet
You clearly have a sad existence. I am refering to you, not the 9ers, not anything to do with football, just you. I don’t understand why:
    A) You think your opinion impacts any of these Raiders fans, who clearly have there minds made up on this years team, and only results will improve or regress any derived opinion

Richochet: REALLY?? No impact??? None? YOU SURE?
You have ONE POST on this thread..out of hundreds posted here..ONE…to me.
    CLEARLY YOU ARE IMPACTED.
    Next-
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
    B) You think you are intelligent clearly, however the remedial way you banter with everyone proves without a doubt you are far from

Richochet: No, YOU clearly think I’m intelligent. See, I’ve NEVER stated as such..however, YOU just did. Means YOU believe I am, and assume I feel the same way. Considering that you’re only post here is TO ME, I suspect you just might be right on this one.
    Oh..before I forget..THANKS

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

    C) You have enough time in your life to argue with up to five raider fans at once. Get a job or something you cretin

Richochet: Ah..so you equate typing replies to 5 different comments directed AT ME is somehow different if..oh..say..a poster posts a dozen or more at just one poster?

What you mean to say is “he must type fast” You would be right. Thinking fast also helps..but..somehow..I know I’ve already lost you, haven’t I?
Regardless..I have a fan..and it’s just as sweet as it could be..right pumpkin?
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@2

    D) You don’t understand how may people are reading your online tantrums, and wondering what kind of deranged and pasty problem child you were/still are?

Richochet: The most important thing is that not only you’ve proven that YOU do just that, but you think “I’m smart.”
    Gosh..I’m beginning to feel..well…special.
    Thanks…you big lug..
    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
    E) When the last time you got layed was. Judging from the angst of your posts maybe the day is yet to come… or maybe you’re disjointed from an excess of rough SF lovin

Richochet: Ahh..and the coup de’ grace’..the ultimate “I can’t think of anything to say” comment. First off..what’s “layed”?? Oh..you mean “laid”.

Weak..juvenile kiddy 5th grade level weak.

HEY?? Is this your first time posting here? Ever? lol..and you sign on just to cry that Richochet is a big meany, and you just wish I would ’stop it..STOP IT RIGHT NOW”??

Hey, when you get out of school, and get your homework done, I want you to put on your big boy pants, and come back here and just give me a “piece of your mind”.

Oh..and thanks again for the compliments.
And no, you can’t have an autograph..

Just to clear up some Bill Walsh talk for the meatheads…
This is from the article that named Al Davis the most significant sports figure in the Bay Area of the 20th century…
“He was one of the great coaches I have ever observed … a truly great coach,” 49ers president and former Davis employee Bill Walsh says. “Had he chosen to remain in coaching, he would
be considered one of the great coaches of all time.”
In this article, 12-29-00, from the Press Democrat this is what Mike Lombardi said…
“I always wanted to work with Al because of Bill Walsh.”…”When I was with the 49ers,” Lombardi said, “I would drive Bill from place to place, and I’d ask him about football. It’s hard for Bill to share his knowledge. One time he said, ‘The most football I learned was working at the Raiders.’”
    =======================================
    =============================================
Wrong. What he said is he learned more with the Raider than he did with all of his years IN COLLEGE..See..was his first time in the NFL.
Now, you little twaddles seem so intent on wanting to believe this..but..really sorry about this..but time I torch that little bridge you hold so desperately to.

    Book: THE GENIUS-BILL WALSH
    Chapter: “Climbing the ladder”
Pge: 41 Bill Walsh described the philosophy he learned about offense was first developed by the legendary Sid Gillman at the Chargers. This philosophy was handed on to Rauch. Sid Gillman was commonly referred to as “the father of the modern passing game” and Walsh found his first exposure to Gillman’s system “an eye opener as to what was possible offensively. What everybody else was doing was primitive compared to Gillman’s concepts..

    PAGE 42, SECOND PARAGRAPH:
“Other than the Gillman epiphany, however, Walsh’s Raiders experience was the worst in his ten tears as a coach. “The atmosphere there was not healthy, in terms of how they treated people and how they tried to get loyalty, trust, and respect out of their people. It was very formative in a very negative way. I learned a lot about how not to run a team.”

Sorry ladies, but..what else do you need? THIS IS IN THE BOOK..not from some flake like Lombardi, or cohn, of all people who want to pass on “feel good ” stories.

WALSH QUIT THE RAIDERS AFTER HIS FIRST YEAR..and contemplated getting out of coaching COMPLETELY because his experience was SO BAD.

    I’m sorry..you’re confused.
You think I made this up..so..yes…go to the library, check out “The GENIUS” and go to page 41, and 42..then say to yourself ‘Oh damn…I didn’t know that. He’s right.”

    Yeah, I know.

    Most here are mice.

In reality, most here are uninformed, and read what they know is very likely a solid fact.
Instead of stepping up, they beg off..tail between legs..accepting defeat.

Some, like you, even beg ‘why reply to him..I can’t..I don’t..why don’t others do what I do so I don’t feel inadequate”?

    You’ll have to ask them.

This is the 4th time you’ve state this, Kelly.

Let me state again, it makes no sense.

“IF they can keep teams under 120, I think the offense can COMPENSATE for it”
Compensate for what? Makes no sense? Are you past the age of expecting to make sense?

    Ok..sure..they can “compensate” for it..

You mean “If the offense does their job, and the defense keeps them under 120, we can win’???

Theoretically, IF we had drafted Crabtree he wouldn’t be holding out against us. He’d have gotten 7th overall money. I can’t help but feel he may have held us hostage too though for top 5 moolah.

Wasn’t a fan of him pre draft and glad Oakland did its home work.

Ok, they probably didn’t and just couldn’t take him without a 40 time!~

Either way, glad he’s across the Bay…
    ……………………………………………….

I was just telling a friend that yesterday. He’d be asking for more money no matter where he was drafted. I think the kid thinks/knows he wont be the same player at this level. NO SPREAD OFFENSE ON THE WEST COAST KID! (until Cable installs it in Oakland that is).
    ==================
AND WE HAVE A WINNER..dumb post of the day.

So..you’re saying he’s deliberately holding out? That regardless of money offered, he’ll want more?
You think he thinks/knows he won’t be the same player at this level..so…HE’S TRYING TO AVOID A PAYCHECK??

    huh??

Yeah, fool..the #1 receiver IN AMERICA somehow..now..is afraid of playing..wants to avoid it at all costs..won’t be the “same player”..so he’s making sure he never gets on the field to prove it..

What? What are you saying? lol..

If we go out and beat SD, in week one, I will be here to give props to all of the believers, and admit that I was wrong in being so cynical. I absolutely, positively will be here. I came here after we beat Denver in Denver later in the season last year. I came here after we beat Tampa. Somebody told me we were going to pound it out against Tampa and I told them they were nuts. When we did, and won big, I came back and admitted I was wrong. I always admit when I’m wrong. It just so happens that when it comes to the Raiders, I rarely am. That’s not my fault.

Is it too much to ask that some of you actually take time to figure out the context of a comment?

Comment was Crabtree was now, mysteriously, doing everything he can to actually avoid signing a contract because he wasn’t going to be able to perform.

In college he was the #1 WR IN THE COUNTRY..adding that now, oddly, the #1 receiver in the country was worried about not doing well??

Obviously I was referring to college.

You needed me to say that?
You couldn’t figure out that from what was posted?

    Was pretty clear.

    How’s that Bey guy doing?

Beeecham, don’t you wish all of your anger and venom on this blog made Al Davis make better moves? Don’t you wish it improved his record?

Former Boise State tight end Chris O’Neill plans to re-sign with the Oakland Raiders and play in their preseason game Saturday night in Oakland against the New Orleans Saints, he said Friday.

O’Neill, who moved to linebacker during the summer and then was cut early in training camp, has been in Boise for several weeks. He had a tryout with the Minnesota Vikings, but that didn’t pan out.

He isn’t sure what the Raiders have in mind. He isn’t even sure which position he will play, but he does expect plenty of work on special teams.

The first round of NFL cuts is Tuesday.

“They told me to pack like I’m staying,” O’Neill said. “It’s got to be a practice-squad deal.”

No sign of Mario Henderson on the injury report, but he could have been listed with a tummy ache. Henderson reported Thursday night through his Twitter page that his stomach hurt because after being on a diet through training camp, he binged at Burger King with a triple whopper meal, two pies, two double cheeseburgers, two fish sandwiches and a milk shake.
