Cable pleased with practice rebound

JaMarcus Russell has met the enemy _ and it wasn’t the New Orleans Saints.

“You know how they say you shoot yourself in the foot?,” Russell said Monday following the Raiders’ practice session. “I think our foot would be off by now.”

Since the Raiders were able to practice without their entire team sidelined by self-inflicted buckshot wounds, we can assume the damage was only to their psyche. Coach Tom Cable was of the opinion he horror of a 45-7 beatdown in front of the home fans was motivation in itself.

“Right now I am excited about the fact that we really show a lot of remorse about, one,our effort, just a lack of attention to detail, all the things that we put out on the field,” Cable said. We talked about being embarrassed about it but we’re taking responsibility for it. I think that’s a big step for us.”

Cable said he didn’t need to remind many people of what happened.

“This was not like in the past, where it was been almost rying to pull it back out of ’em,” Cable said.

More news, notes and quotes:

— Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but Cable’s reaction when asked about the “chip fracture” sustained by Nnamdi Asomugha makes it sound as if it could be worse than it was portrayed following the game. Asomugha watched practice from the sideline, then was off to see a specialist.

“We don’t have any update. We should have something tomorrow,” Cable said. “(We) just want to make sure the chip is not displaced or anything like that.”

When asked if surgery was a possibility, Cable said, “We don’t know that . . . they’re going this afternoon with a specialist to see exactly what the procedure will be.

Cable caught himself whenhe realized how “procedure” sounded, and added, “When I say procedure, I mean in terms of rehabbing it so we don’t know anything it.”

Asomugha was injured making a tackle on the Saints’ second offensive play.

— Let’s go ahead and assume Samson Satele, signed to be the replacement for Jake Grove, hasn’t worked out as expected.

Not when Cable said Satele is in a three-way race with John Wade and Chris Morris to be the starting center. And Wade took the field for the first time since Aug. 13 after recovering from a stinger.

There are things that I like and there are some things I don’t feel like he’s getting it quick enough,” Cable said of Satele, noting that line calls have been a problem.

Said Satele: I’m comfortable. I’ve got the offense down, but I’m still learning on the way, still have a lot to learn, and I’m more comfortable than I first was.”

Morris said his first task is always to be ready at both guard positions and center, and that he’s entering his fourth season because of that versatility. But he also noted, “Shoot, I’m looking to start. That’s what all three of us are trying to do right now.”

Satele, as well as the right side of the line with Cooper Carlisle and Cornell Green, have been shaky through three games, although Carlisle and Green appear secure as starters.

— Safety Mike Mitchell, with one more good day of rehab on his pulled hamstring, could make it back to practice Wednesday. At least that what he’s hoping.

“I wanted to play this Thursday, but they said the opener is more important, which it is,” Mitchell said. “So, that’s now my focus. I’m for sure going to play in the opener. It’s been almost three weeks now, and I’m almost at 100 percent. I really wanted to try to get some game experience before that game, but it’s what I got to do. And I’ll be ready for it when it comes.”

Although Mitchell hurt his hamstring before his first Pro Day, in minicamp and again at training camp, he said he is not concerned it will happen again.

“I’m not going to be going out there worrying about my hamstring,” Mitchell said. “I’m going to go out there and play. If it happens again, it happens again. But the way I feel right now, I feel strong, moving good, I don’t see it happening again.”

— Exactly how Mitchell will be used, should he return, remains to be seen. He arrived to the Raiders late because his Ohio University class hadn’t graduated, and twice he’s been hurt.

Mitchell conceded he would probably get a lot of special teams work because Tyvon Branch has established himself as the starting strong safety.

Cable said it would be possible to integrate Mitchell into some specialty packages in the secondary before the opener.

— Sounds as if Chris Johnson has pulled away in the competition to start opposite Asomugha (assuming Asomugha is good to go for the opener.

“Chris has had a terrific camp,” Cable said. “Stanford has had a couple of struggles.”

— Cable said he hadn’t yet determined how much starters would play against Seattle Thursday night. He did say defensive end Matt Shaughnessy, who missed both the 49ers and Saints games with a foot sprain, would get significant playing time.

— Linebacker Kirk Morrison put on his uniform and a cumbersome brace to protect dislocated left elbow, but didn’t practice in team sessions. He won’t face Seattle but expects to play in Week 1.

— The Raiders cut wide receivers Shawn Bayes and Will Franklin, defensive tackle Joe Cohen, center Jonathan Compas and guard Marcus Johnson. Teams have to be at 75 players Tuesday.

— Shane Lechler isn’t practice and won’t kick against Seattle but is expected to be ready for the opener. S Rashad Baker (stinger), LB Slade Norris (calf strain), CB Justin Miller (turf toe), RB Justin Fargas (hamstring), WR Chaz Schilens (broken foot), T Khalif Barnes (ankle) all joined Asomugha and Mitchell on the sidelines.

Your boy is number 2 in N.E. I can see. Good job.

  • Florida Pete

i would be surprised if Mitchell plays this year…

and wouldn’t be surpised if he never plays for us…

  • Copenhagen_Fan

Pete the voice of reason speaks

  • Florida Pete

    1 WR Maryland Darrius Heyward-Bey
2 S Ohio University Michael Mitchell
    3 DE Wisconsin Matt Shaughnessy
    4 WR Florida Louis Murphy
4 LB Oregon State Slade Norris
    6 DE Missouri Stryker Sulak
    6 TE Iowa Brandon Myers

this is what we did this year…

we drafted replacements for JLH and Schillens… better replacements… maybe… but not as much a position of need as say a RT or a DT… oh well…

we drafted a safety… from a small program who had a great agent smart enough to put a highlight film on youtube… he probably won’t play this year… probably won’t play next year either, at least not for us…

we drafted Matt Shaunessy… so what is Matt doing these days???

we drafted Slade Norris… maybe he sticks… maybe not…

we drafted Stryker Sulak… schit with a name like that… i might have drafted him… but we didn’t even sign him…

we drafted Brandon Myers… hey… an acorn said the squirrel!!!

now… what were our positions of need???

let’s see… DT, DE, MLB, RT, OG, C…

i got an idea… how’s about we draft people we need and will use right now…

and another idea is… how’s about we do a little more than look at a youtube video before we think someone is worthy of a second round pick…

  • NoMoreFargas

Could the D be even worse this year and if so will again go with Kelly,Warren,Sands next year and draft a speedy db.

  • Florida Pete

i think we are woefully short in the talent department…

getting Barnes back should go a long way to curing the O-line… where is Wade??? is he hurt??? if not, he needs to play… Satelle does not have it…

here’s the draft picks i had in January…

B.J. Raji, Boston College, DT, 1st Team DT Green Bay
Ron Brace, Boston College, DT, 1st Team DT NE Patriots
Augustus Parrish, Kent State, OT (released by the Saints) (I think I changed this pick before draft day)
Jasper Brinkley, South Carolina, MLB, backs up EJ Harrington
Derek Walker, Illinois, DE (released by Redskins)
Dallas Reynolds, BYU, C/G free agent signed w/Eagles, 3rd team C/G

Reynolds will be available on wednesday…

looking at Derek Walker can’t hurt… he’s good against the run…

    and… looking at Parrish can’t hurt…

  • Florida Pete

hey, did you notice that i picked 2 DT’s…

    a MLB, a DE…

    a center, and an OT…

now… what has everyone been bitching about for the past 3 weeks…

  • Florida Pete

actually, i am very okay with Henderson… his little binge (w/o purge) last week was a mistake… hopefully he won’t do it during the regular season… but i think he’s fine… we have other issues that take precedence…

gallery was the victim of a philosophy that i simply do not agree with… any first rounder… in my opinion… should be plugged into the line-up at their position… i don’t care if it’s quarterback or halfback, left tackle or middle line backer…

if you didn’t need the guy at that position… you should have drafted someone else at a position of need…

and yes, that does mean sink or swim…

personally, i would never draft a player in the top ten of the draft under these conditions… except to refuse to sign him… and by the way, that’s exactly what i would do… i would draft a good prospect of 3rd round talent and simply tell the agent that 3rd round money is all i will be offering… sign, don’t sign… up to the agent and player…

really… why would any reasonable business man pay top-tier wages for an unproven player…

Drew Brees 3/14/2006: Signed a six-year, $60 million contract. The deal contains $20 million guaranteed, including an $8 million signing bonus. 2009-2011: $9.8 million, 2012: Free Agent. Cap charge: $14 million (2009).

    now let’s compare him to:

Jamarcus Russell 9/10/2007: Signed a six-year, $61 million contract. The deal contains $32 million guaranteed, including all six years’ base salaries and a $19.9 million option bonus in the second year. Also available is a onetime performance bonus of $2.8 million. Another $7 million is available through incentives. Russell earned a $3 million escalator for 2010 by taking over 45% of the snaps in 2008. 2009: $460,000, 2010: $550,000 (+ $3 million escalator), 2011: $650,000, 2012: $6.69672 million, 2013: Free Agent

Jruss will need to get good no great quick to make me forget we could traded down and got Adrian Peterson.

    GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Florida Pete

it strikes me that taking a QB in the top ten is the dumbest thing any team can do…

the bust factor is huge… you’re not going to be able to do anything else with that player…

and so your essentially paying for the opportunity to train a player…

and if your successful… you get to re-sign him to a spectacular deal!!!

but if your not successful… you have a clipboard holder…

  • Florida Pete

Derek Walker, by the way, caught on with Seattle…

if released, we might want to look at him… he’s very good against the run… (i think)…

  • Florida Pete

it’ll be interesting to compare my draft list… to the Raiders draft list…

(and by the way, every one of those players were available to us when we drafted at that spot…)

let’s see how many of my guys make their teams and contribute… compared to the Raider list…

and then let’s think about how much better our team would be with a coupla monster DT’s, a hard hitting MLB, a good against the run DE, and a center whose ass doesn’t hit the ground during a play…

  • Florida Pete

    i’m finished…

i now turn you over to your regular programming…

  • 4evaRaider

what if we dont want 2B returned 2 our regular programming???

    Cable pleased with practice rebound

Russell said he can prevent holding penalties by stepping up in the pocket sooner. Those dropped passes? He said he could have put it in their chest better and made better throws.

these guys should write a book. 101 ways to polish a turd

  • NoMoreFargas

My big question is shouldn’t the offense dominate every practice they go against are D who wouldn’t look good.

  • OAKlifer

Hey Oaklifer…morning by the way:If I cant change a players position…who’s goona be my KICK/PUNT RETURNER,because I didnt draft any

you will get the return yards you r defense and special teams has as a unit for exsample if you had Oaklands D starting and higgins returnsa a punt for a TD you get the points yards and TD…if you go to scoring in the league it breaks it down for you

yeah… the only way Russell could have done it better was to fuqqing hand it to ’em…

receivers are supposed to catch the ball…

and 12 out of 18 times they did…

Murphy could have made it 14…

JLH could have made it 15…

    it called doing your job…

  • RaiderRockstar

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) The battered Broncos are running out of time and players alike.

With just a short week left in their preseason, the Broncos are scrambling to fix a turnover-prone, mistake-filled and injury-riddled offense that’s nowhere near ready for the regular season.

“Time is running out,” quarterback Kyle Orton said. “We have got to get some things fixed.”

    And some players healthy.

The list of Denver’s sidelined players include: quarterbacks Orton (finger) and Chris Simms (ankle); wide receivers Jabar Gaffney (thumb) and Brandon Marshall (suspension); running backs Knowshon Moreno (knee) and LaMont Jordan (leg); and right guard Chris Kuper (ankle).

Jordan is the only one of the bunch who might be able to play Thursday night against Arizona, when the Broncos try to avoid their first winless preseason since 1960 with rookie Tom Brandstater or journeyman Ingle Martin under center.

  • Norco Bob

ya well I was told, and still told, that raji was the guy all the way up to the time we were on clock but Al couldnt get past that dhb 40 time,..all in war room were pissed.

  • Norco Bob

and just as predicted, dhb isnt any good, maybe a 3rd round talent guy.

  • Norco Bob

wannaberocker,..unsure why you even bring up denver and their issues, we are in far worse shape.

  • Man, the Seattle game means nothing as to the season, so we will be waiting another couple of weeks to see if this team has any heart.

My expectations have always been low for this team (6-10), but I may have to lower them even further come opening night.

How depressing. That is what you get when you fail to improve the o-line or d-line and have a guy as HC that is woefully inadequate. What a fukin joke.

  • It wouldn’t matter if Lyle Alzado was here in his prime along with Bruce Smith.

This team has no desire they play with no pride!

They are playing for a paycheck.

I am super pissed off about it myself!

  • Chris in NY

Kirk Morrison has definitely retained his MLB spot after watching Brown run with the first unit vs. the Saints. He was terribly late to read run/pass and almost always out of position to make the tackle. When he is in position, he too often misses the tackle.

I’m thinking they should consider Slade Norris to start at SLB and let him grow into the position. He’s shown flashes and has a nose for the ball.

  • RaiderRockstar

    53 man roster predictions:

Scottish, Dell, OAKlifer & BSJ all predicted OL Marcus Johnson would stick …

    RR 1, everyone else 0

  • RaiderRockstar

you guys will probably break even though if we keep Desmond Bryant and cut either Joseph or Boschetti…

    darn it!

  • RaiderRockstar

I haven’t heard any screams to cut Huff lately since Eugene & Branch were abused in the Saints game.

    hmmm…. interesting

  • Norco Bob

Russell should be cut, and his mink.

  • “Rookie safety Mike Mitchell is close to returning after missing three weeks with a re-injured hamstring. He also hopes to play in the opener. …”

I’ll believe it when I see it.

  • Norco Bob

Gacria should play entire hawks game then get start vs sd.

  • Norco Bob

    f*ck mitchell,…a bust like dhb.

  • OAKlifer

Narco you are wrong Russel makes to much money to be cut! he should simply be moved to RT and then Mop handle can take his aggresion to the D-line and wholla we have fixed our problem and with Garcia at the helm Jruss protecting him and ol moppy stoping the run in the A gap we be lookin good!!!!
