Cable pleased with practice rebound

JaMarcus Russell has met the enemy _ and it wasn’t the New Orleans Saints.

“You know how they say you shoot yourself in the foot?,” Russell said Monday following the Raiders’ practice session. “I think our foot would be off by now.”

Since the Raiders were able to practice without their entire team sidelined by self-inflicted buckshot wounds, we can assume the damage was only to their psyche. Coach Tom Cable was of the opinion he horror of a 45-7 beatdown in front of the home fans was motivation in itself.

“Right now I am excited about the fact that we really show a lot of remorse about, one,our effort, just a lack of attention to detail, all the things that we put out on the field,” Cable said. We talked about being embarrassed about it but we’re taking responsibility for it. I think that’s a big step for us.”

Cable said he didn’t need to remind many people of what happened.

“This was not like in the past, where it was been almost rying to pull it back out of ‘em,” Cable said.

More news, notes and quotes:

– Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but Cable’s reaction when asked about the “chip fracture” sustained by Nnamdi Asomugha makes it sound as if it could be worse than it was portrayed following the game. Asomugha watched practice from the sideline, then was off to see a specialist.

“We don’t have any update. We should have something tomorrow,” Cable said. “(We) just want to make sure the chip is not displaced or anything like that.”

When asked if surgery was a possibility, Cable said, “We don’t know that . . . they’re going this afternoon with a specialist to see exactly what the procedure will be.

Cable caught himself whenhe realized how “procedure” sounded, and added, “When I say procedure, I mean in terms of rehabbing it so we don’t know anything it.”

Asomugha was injured making a tackle on the Saints’ second offensive play.

– Let’s go ahead and assume Samson Satele, signed to be the replacement for Jake Grove, hasn’t worked out as expected.

Not when Cable said Satele is in a three-way race with John Wade and Chris Morris to be the starting center. And Wade took the field for the first time since Aug. 13 after recovering from a stinger.

There are things that I like and there are some things I don’t feel like he’s getting it quick enough,” Cable said of Satele, noting that line calls have been a problem.

Said Satele: I’m comfortable. I’ve got the offense down, but I’m still learning on the way, still have a lot to learn, and I’m more comfortable than I first was.”

Morris said his first task is always to be ready at both guard positions and center, and that he’s entering his fourth season because of that versatility. But he also noted, “Shoot, I’m looking to start. That’s what all three of us are trying to do right now.”

Satele, as well as the right side of the line with Cooper Carlisle and Cornell Green, have been shaky through three games, although Carlisle and Green appear secure as starters.

– Safety Mike Mitchell, with one more good day of rehab on his pulled hamstring, could make it back to practice Wednesday. At least that what he’s hoping.

“I wanted to play this Thursday, but they said the opener is more important, which it is,” Mitchell said. “So, that’s now my focus. I’m for sure going to play in the opener. It’s been almost three weeks now, and I’m almost at 100 percent. I really wanted to try to get some game experience before that game, but it’s what I got to do. And I’ll be ready for it when it comes.”

Although Mitchell hurt his hamstring before his first Pro Day, in minicamp and again at training camp, he said he is not concerned it will happen again.

“I’m not going to be going out there worrying about my hamstring,” Mitchell said. “I’m going to go out there and play. If it happens again, it happens again. But the way I feel right now, I feel strong, moving good, I don’t see it happening again.”

– Exactly how Mitchell will be used, should he return, remains to be seen. He arrived to the Raiders late because his Ohio University class hadn’t graduated, and twice he’s been hurt.

Mitchell conceded he would probably get a lot of special teams work because Tyvon Branch has established himself as the starting strong safety.

Cable said it would be possible to integrate Mitchell into some specialty packages in the secondary before the opener.

– Sounds as if Chris Johnson has pulled away in the competition to start opposite Asomugha (assuming Asomugha is good to go for the opener.

“Chris has had a terrific camp,” Cable said. “Stanford has had a couple of struggles.”

– Cable said he hadn’t yet determined how much starters would play against Seattle Thursday night. He did say defensive end Matt Shaughnessy, who missed both the 49ers and Saints games with a foot sprain, would get significant playing time.

– Linebacker Kirk Morrison put on his uniform and a cumbersome brace to protect dislocated left elbow, but didn’t practice in team sessions. He won’t face Seattle but expects to play in Week 1.

– The Raiders cut wide receivers Shawn Bayes and Will Franklin, defensive tackle Joe Cohen, center Jonathan Compas and guard Marcus Johnson. Teams have to be at 75 players Tuesday.

– Shane Lechler isn’t practice and won’t kick against Seattle but is expected to be ready for the opener. S Rashad Baker (stinger), LB Slade Norris (calf strain), CB Justin Miller (turf toe), RB Justin Fargas (hamstring), WR Chaz Schilens (broken foot), T Khalif Barnes (ankle) all joined Asomugha and Mitchell on the sidelines.

Hopefully we can follow the dischargers lead and pickup some defensive and offensive players.

The dischargers acquired defensice tackle Travis Johnson, a “first-round-pick” in 2005, who never lived up to expectations, from Houston for an undisclosed draft pick in 2010.

You never really know if a guy is a failure until he’s failed elsewhere, not just with “one-team.” Maybe with different coaching and a different scheme which favors his attributes, a guy can flourish? Since he’s with the dischargers, obviously, I hope he fails…at least when he plays against us!

Well said S&B and a young man coming into that situation and progresing at the pace he is shows some Character Remember Oakland never has had a so called Franchise QB usally Vets so we may have to ride this out and hopefully he will get what he needs to be sucsessful. With this young WR crew and TE and RB think we are headed in right direction

I just can’t figure out what the problem is….I mean…

we have the next madden as HC,

Al Davis is the best owner in sports,

    DHB was a great pick,

Mitchell is the second coming of Tatum,

our passing game is impossible to stop,

our front seven is great, especially the DTs who are always doubled and totally dominate,

    our RT is vastly underrated,

our Center is way better than Grove…

I mean, what is our problem Priesttj? I think it is the fan’s fault right? If we only gave the team positive vibes they would be dominant right?

Chaz Scilens was never on the practice squad. He was buried on the depth chart behind Curry, Lelie, Walker and Higgins.

that would be the same scenario if any of those undrafted scrubs made the 53 man roster … they’d be inactive for 16 weeks (what’s the use?)

you think Cable is going to keep Rankin over Fargas? you think he’ll start Brown over Morrison at MLB?

    fat chance.

Al…listen…get together with Marshall, Washington and the other people that were in the room when Cable assaulted Hanson and have them report the truth to the police…Cable will then be arrested and you can void his contract based on conduct detrimental to the team.

Then step away as GM, let Madden take over as interim GM to hire a good, young GM and then let that GM hire the coach…the sooner the better…it’s not like we are going to the playoffs this year anyhow…

^^^^^^Boy what a stupid move that would be and it would cause this season to be like last season. A complete waste because of more coaching turmoil.

Now a move like that would be embarassing….

  • Chris in NY

Everybody needs to come back off the ledge, just a little. There are definitely some issues to worry about with this team. Stopping the run is of course No. 1. But it’s only the preseason. It was only one game — Other than the Run D, the Raiders were looking good in the other two. So relax. Drew Brees and the Saints are going to average 30+ points this season. They’ll probably score 40+ multiple times. It happens. The offense, hopefully, isn’t going to drop a half-dozen passes per game and fumble it away 3 more times. It was a sh-tty game. It guarantees nothing. Just like beating Dallas 31-10 guarantees nothing.

And seriously, how can you call DHB a bust when he hasn’t played a single reg. season down and is playing a position that is notoriously difficult for rookies to break through at?

And really, calling Mike Mitchell a bust when he hasn’t even played a preseason down yet? WTF? You can worry about his hamstring issue since it’s now a recurring thing. But you have no idea whether he’ll be the next Jack Tatum, a washout or somewhere in-between.

Let’s just get psyched for SD in Week 1 and quit all the moaning and whaling about everyone who has anything to do with this team.

  • Chris in NY

One thing you have to remember about the practice squad is that those players aren’t locked up. Anybody you put on the practice squad is a pseudo free agent who can be signed away by other teams if those teams are willing to put them on their 53-man roster.

Good post. Couldn’t agree more. Countless players have taken time to develop. Some have been called busts and turn out to be gems (one of which QB’ed us to a couple of titles).

Lets not write them off before they play a game, fellas.

    Jeez.
For numbers people, this may serve to brighten your spirits:

    AFC West Preseason

    Team W L T Win %
    Oakland 1 2 0 .333
    San Diego 1 2 0 .333
    Denver 0 3 0 .000
    KC 0 3 0 .000

And we could have beat SF. We went for two in a preseason game and had an overeager rookie FA drop a punt with less than 2 min to go.

I don’t even think we’re the worst team in the division, much less the NFL.

  • DKnight007

Raiders need to work on their screen plays and perfect them. They can be a valuable weapon offense….and also get DHB and JLH the ball on WR screens and reverses.

    More numbers from our preseason

    Offense

    PTS
    19.3
    (12th)

    YDS
    330.0
    (11th)

    PASS YDS
    231.0
    (8th)

    RUSH YDS
    99.0
    (21st)
    ————————————————-

These are far more sobering, though, just to be fair and balanced.

    Defense

    PTS
    25.3
    (30th)

    YDS
    399.7
    (32nd)

    PASS YDS
    188.3
    (8th)

    RUSH YDS
    211.3
    (32nd)

Our rushing yardage and PPG should improve. Our rushing yardage allowed per game will probably be similar to last year. Our points per game allowed won’t be that bad.

Everything went right for NO and that 45 really ruins any average we have, and that 7 we put up the same for our offensive stats (that was not a pun, but take it as one if you wish).

DMC has an av. YPC over 6 in limited action. Russell’s above 60 % completion and no INTs.

He will lead more TD drives because we will be running more, screen passes, etc., not going deep to the outside every play. Lots of Miller and Myers in the red zone, and DMC will be lined up all over the field.

And what/who made Gruden the exception (and certainly not the only one — just the most recent)? That would be Gruden himself.

ANY coach with the balls to do it, and can win while doing it, will be allowed to run his team his way. If Gruden can do it, why not someone else?

If a coach isn’t strong enough to stand (mostly) on his own, he shouldn’t be our HC anyway. If the guy’s not strong enough to deal with Al Davis’ personality, then he shouldn’t be the coach. But…if he’s not also willing to be loyal to his employer, to a fault, then he should not be our HC.

Richochet: You live in a strange fantasy land.
What made Gruden tenacious and obstinate also got him a one way ticket out of town. While Al lives to be the face of the franchise, he no longer was..GRUDEN WAS..and Al would have nothing to do with it.

Save the “loyal to a fault” nonsense. Being constantly undermined isn’t conducive to being in charge. Having someone stab you behind your back, TO THE MEDIA, isn’t a positive feel good situation. If your employer is a total a-hole, and you can get work elsewhere, by all means announce it to the world.

    %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%5

Tom Cable hasn’t shown a single sign of being a puppet…and he’s been under more scrutiny, from all sides, than just about any HC in the league. If he actually makes a break-through, if he can actually find a way to get these guys to put back-to-back-to-back good efforts, until they become the norm rather than the rare occurence…then Cable can have a huge career. Al’s there, and he’s not going anywhere until he goes, but he’s not in the way of Cable stamping this team as his own.

Richochet: Yep, it’s official. You chase parked cars. Cable has done NOTHING to put his stamp on a single thing, period. Isn’t this the EXACT same thing you and most said when Shell was hired? When Kiffin was there?
Cable was so uninspiring that Al was looking for SOMEONE/ANYONE up until the absolute last day of naming Cable the guy.

    %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%

Oh, yeah…Norv benching Collins for Tui??? What part of that would make any sense at all? Tui couldn’t get off the curb, let alone into the fast lane. Collins is a capable, if not spectacular veteran, who has proven himself before and since…and never in a hundred years should Norv have benched him. Al made a great move stepping in there…Norv needed to go, and few people would argue that even now.

Richochet: geez..you’re such a lemming. WRONG. At the time Collins had lost 7 STRAIGHT..and couldn’t hit water from a boat (BTW..prior to AND after the Raiders he did do well..for some ‘ODD REASON’ while with the Raiders his career tanked..wow..where have I heard that before?) At the time Tui was an unknown and the Raiders had his as #2..YOU BEST KNOW IF YOUR #2 CAN STEP IN.
Yeah, Al overruled Norv, (WHICH EVERY PROSPECTIVE HC APPLICANT SAW) and Collins went back in, AND STUNK UP THE PLACE, and LOST 4 STRAIGHT).
Season was already over. Norv did what should have been done.
    %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
The best thing to happen to the Raiders since Gruden left…is the fact that Al Davis has tightened his grip, not loosened it…while at the same time, paying more attention to his own instincts, and apparently listening to better personnel advice the past couple of years.

Richochet: And the above comment is why you are viewed as being a babbling boob.
Al’s THE OWNER, NOT THE HC.
