Anticipating Raiders’ roster cuts

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009 at 8:01 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Tom Cable said Wednesday eight roster spots were up for grabs, while the day before he estimated between 40 of 42 were spoken for. The truth is, the final say belongs to Al Davis, and he’s not talking.

Here’s how the roster breaks down heading into Thursday night’s game against the Seattle Seahawks:

QUARTERBACKS (4, will keep 3)_JaMarcus Russell, Jeff Garcia. On the bubble: Bruce Gradkowski, Charlie Frye.

Summary: The only question is whether it’s Gradkowski or Frye for No. 3, and it’s too close to call.

RUNNING BACKS (8, will keep 5 or 6)_Darren McFadden, Justin Fargas, Michael Bush, Oren O’Neal (FB). On the bubble: Louis Rankin, Gary Russell (FB-RB), Marcel Reece (FB), Luke Lawton (FB)

Summary: The issue of who will get the ball most often and if Cable will identify a lead back remains clear as mud, but barring a surprise cutdown-day trade involving Fargas, four spots are spoken for. Rankin has had two solid camps, Russell is versatile enough to play both positions, Reece has intriguing receiving skills out of the backfield and Lawton is a conventional block-and-catch fullback.

WIDE RECEIVERS (8, will keep 5 or 6)_Chaz Schilens, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Louis Murphy, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Javon Walker. On the bubble: Nick Miller, Todd Watkins, Jonathan Holland.

Summary: Nick Miller could stick because of Justin Miller’s turf toe to return kickoffs, and might stick anyway. Watkins and Holland are in a difficult situation unless Holland’s kick coverage skills keep him around.

TIGHT ENDS (4, will keep 3)_Zach Miller, Brandon Myers. On the bubble_Tony Stewart, Darrell Strong.

Summary: Stewart has done nothing to merit being cut _ he had an outstanding camp catching the ball _ but sometimes teams just want to go young.

OFFENSIVE LINE (13 will keep between 9 or 10)_LT Mario Henderson, LG Robert Gallery, C Samson Satele, RG Cooper Carlisle, RT Cornell Green, T Khalif Barnes, C-G Chris Morris, T Erik Pears, G-T Paul McQuistan. On the bubble: T-G Mark Wilson, T Seth Wand, T James Marten, C John Wade.

Summary: As shaky as the line has been to the right of Gallery, it appears the five starters are etched in stone with the possible exception of center, where Cable floated the possibility of someone other than Satele being the starter. Based on Wade’s health, Morris would be the most likely option and regardless he’ll stick because he can play all three inside positions. Barnes will be ready by Week 2 or 3, Pears can back up at either tackle, and McQuistan can play guard or tackle. The Raiders seem to like Wilson, but he rarely stays healthy long enough to make a serious run.

DEFENSIVE LINE (11, will keep 8 or 9)_LE Greg Ellis, DT Gerard Warren, DT Tommy Kelly, RE Trevor Scott, E Jay Richardson, DT Desmond Bryant, DE Matt Shaughnessy. On the bubble: DT William Joseph, DT Terdell Sands, DE-DT Ryan Boschetti, DE Greyson Gunheim.

Summary: Cable insists Kelly is playing very well, which makes you wonder if the rest of the line is really that bad or of the coach is propping up last year’s big money re-signing. Ellis has shown flashes of still being a good pass rusher despite his age. Bryant appears to have gone from undrafted free agent to sure thing, while Scott and Richardson also seem secure. Hard to imagine Sands surviving given his inaction over the past two games, and Gunheim and Boschetti have been running often with the third team _ never a good sign.

LINEBACKERS (10, will keep 6 or 7)_WLB Thomas Howard, MLB Kirk Morrison, SLB Jon Alston, MLB-OLB Ricky Brown, MLB-OLB Isaiah Ekejiuba, OLB Slade Norris. On the bubble_OLB David Nixon, OLB Morlon Greenwood, OLB-MLB Sam Williams, MLB Chris O’Neill.

Summary: The starters have yet to be sorted out for certain, but Howard, Morrison, Alston, Brown and Ekejiuba are solid unless someone is traded or Ekejuiba’s shoulder is much worse than anyone is letting on. Throw in Norris because he’s a draft pick and healthy enough to play Thursday night. The only remaining question is whether Williams gets another year even though he’s conclusively demonstrated he’s not a starting-caliber linebacker and they already have Ekejiuba as a pure special teamer. O’Neill is already under the impression he’s headed for the practice squad

DEFENSIVE BACKS: (13, will keep 9 or 10)_RCB Nnamdi Asomugha, LCB Chris Johnson, SS Tyvon Branch, FS Hiram Eugene, CB Stanford Routt, S Mike Mitchell. On the bubble_CB Justin Miller, S Michael Huff, S Rashad Baker, CB John Bowie, S-CB Michael Hawkins, CB-S Darrick Brown, S Jerome Boyd.

Summary: Beyond the starters, nickel back Routt and Mitchell, this could sort out a number of ways. Justin Miller’s turf toe is apparently not serious, so he could be secure unless Davis is sold on Nick Miller to return kickoffs. The owner may not yet be ready to cut ties with Huff, who probably will never justify his draft status but may be worthy of the final roster. Cable is a Baker fan and never wanted him to leave, but there was never any effort made to sign him originally. Baker has also sustained concussion and a stinger since returning. Bowie, the last remnant of the Randy Moss trade, has never impressed in practice. Hawkins and Brown are classic Raider athletes in terms of size and speed. Boyd, a converted college linebacker, could probably use a year of practice squad.

SPECIALISTS_PK Sebastian Janikowski, P Shane Lechler and LS Jon Condo are in. P-PK Ricky Schmitt sticks only if one of the kickers is hurt.

Note: Johnnie Lee Higgins will be the return specialist. Justin Miller and Nick Miller are competing to be kickoff return specialist.

Brown has a motor on him. I really think they gave him a quick look at MLB, but really are just trying to push Kirk in a contract year, after what they saw as a sub-par year, despite leading the team in tackles again.

Brown is firely, but not suited to play the position, at least not every down. If Kirk is the leader of the D, ride him. There’s really no other option here.

They could try Ricky at mike and Kirk at sam, but I think it will just be more of the same. Can’t shed blocks, can’t penetrate (with no help from the line), making arm tackles and shoelace tackles 20 yards down field.

  • LA to TheBay

Raiderbeat suggested that the starters asked Cable to be played tonight, whereas Cable was just going to play the backups.

What’s up, Nation? It’s game day.

What’s wrong with the AFC West? And I don’t mean us this time. Well, maybe – but the Broncos and Chiefs look like a long way from putting something together that makes sense.

Both star WRs that they drafted are on 3rd team and in the dog house. KC already fired a coach. Broncos have Kyle Orton. Wow. At least we’re good for four wins.
    ———–
    “I don’t mean us”???

You wonder what’s happening with the AFC West..and you EXCLUDE the Raiders from the chaos?
    Wow.
    Convenient.

    Yes, KC fired an asst.

Props to recognizing a liability, and doing something about it.

Here’s the other side of the coin.

You have a lame duck coach, in this case a HC, who SHOULD be fired..because he EXPECTS to be fired..because some lame owner actually drafted up a resignation for him.
Instead not only does he not get fired, but he’s kept around for 9 more months, let coach 4 games into the season, effectively torching the season, and THEN gets fired.
    Now THAT’S dysfunctional.

As far as star WR’s drafted?

Oh..I get it. You’re saying that SOME TEAMS draft a player, and regardless of how good/bad they are, are automatically inserted as a starter?

Ever consider that other teams are laughing at the Raiders for wasting a #7 on a guy who can’t catch? Or a second round pick on a guy that didn’t even get invited to the combines?

  • jhill

I think you will end up seeing Ellis, Kelly, Bryant, and Shaugnessy as the starting front. May not happen week 1, but Warren will without question go down with an injury (always happens), and Shaugnessy will move Scott back to 3rd downs.

    Jhill,

Do you think Bryant could play DE? If we don’t replace Scott at RDE we may go 0-16, that’s how bad that turd is. Teams will run right at him all day long…

You wonder what’s happening with the AFC West..and you EXCLUDE the Raiders from the chaos?
    —————————————————–

That’s why I said ‘well maybe’ right after. I’m a realist.

Our #7 pick has yet to play on down in the NFL regular season, so wait until after 9/14 to say he can’t catch. Doesn’t matter what these guys do or don’t do in practice/preseason, it doesn’t count. The guy’s a gamer. This evident at Maryland. We all knew the guy was raw.

Oh no, we took him at 7, instead of someone else taking him 15-25. So what. Argument could be made that pick would be better spent on LB/DL/OL. A good argument, but what’s done is done.

If we didn’t get Mitchell, the Bears, a pretty traditionally solid D with toughness would have. When we beat them to it, they traded out of 2nd rd.

But then again, we could have got Crabtree or Andre Smith, right?

By the way, who’s your favorite team, again?

Priesttj, the $4bn just won’t go far enough – especially split between 32 owners and 1,696 players. The Raiders image sales have kept the Davis boat afloat but, in the current market, that has little or no growth potential. And that image will fade unless he delivers results on the field.

The financial divisions within the NFL are widening and the Raiders are getting left behind – along with the 49ers, Vikings and Jags. Even the Chargers aren’t too healthy because (you guessed it) their stadium needs major investment or replacement. The Cowboys are just out of sight. Jones may be useless at picking WRs but he is one fabulous business man. Davis just isn’t in the same stratosphere.

How are the Raiders going to part-finance a new stadium in the next few years? I have no idea.

Is their a city that can bankrole the development? No.

Are there big corporate sponsors ready to write big checks for naming rights? Not any more.

Are their investors willing to be top dollar for minority shares in the Raiders? Keep looking.

Nope, bottom-line, the Davis family is going to have to contribute hundreds of millions of dollars – even with some support from a host city and sponsors. And do they have the money? No.

That means they are just going to have to sell some more of their only asset. The Raiders.
    ————————–
Raider will NEVER get a new stadium. No one wants to deal with Al, period.

Sponsors? Al has gone from “top of profession” to “laughingstock”..no corporations want to be linked to a punchline.

Davis money? Already shown, as you stated that there is none.

The ONLY chance the Raiders have of getting in new digs is sharing a stadium with the Niners, and that has about a snowballs chance in hell of happening..again..see “Al” as the reason why.

Al will butt in, want things HIS way, won’t listen to anyone, as usual, and will nix the deal.

  • jhill

For all this talk about Mike Mitchell, the one thing he BETTER be able to do is cover. I don’t care about him laying someone out during the game if he can’t cover the TE or play the deep zone. That’s the #1 thing that Al requires his SS to do. Wilson was awful, Branch hasn’t shown he can get it done yet.

But yes sir, let’s all wait on that big hit. Nevermind the 6 he just gave up biting on the PA fake.

Richochet: And you WONDER WHY THE RAIDERS ARE THE LEAST VALUED TEAM IN THE NFL?? Al sacrificed A SEASON..not a game..not a practice..a SEASON..all so he could try and save ONE MILLION? The guy signed out 270 MILLION IN CONTRACTS THE PREVIOUS OFFSEASON, none of which proved to be beneficial, and he keeps around Kiffin with the hopes of him doing something stupid that will SAVE HIM ONE MILLION?? Hall? 50 million contract (80??) Paid him 8 MILLION for 8 games..Walker 50 million, Wilson the same..Hell, Kwame harris a 10 million contract..which was the dumbest signing in the history of the NFL, and yet, still…Al wants to save ONE million?

    Makes zero sense.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Rich: “Instead not only does he not get fired, but he’s kept around for 9 more months, let coach 4 games into the season, effectively torching the season, and THEN gets fired.
    Now THAT’S dysfunctional.”

LA-Bay: An you’d be right. So we brought in the guy that finished decently down the stretch, a guy players responded to.

Richochet: Guy lost 75% of his games. Same guy SUGGESTED the Raiders hire Kwame Harris. Same guy stubbornly kept in Kwame (we know that was Al’s call, right?) for 8 MORE GAMES..finally benching him after week 12.
Save the “guys responded to”. Raiders beat two reeling teams who had been fodder for pretty much any team they played that last month. TB couldn’t beat themselves in a scrimmage. Their qb was some oft-fired hack who had a history of choking in big games..(who’s, BTW, now YOUR hack :) ) Honestly, are you telling me you look at Cable as a guy who demands respect??

Are you HONESTLY saying that? That the players now, all of a sudden, see Cable, who looks about as sharp as a watermelon, has the players ‘believing’? “wanting to produce” ..”win one for the gipper” type thang? lol…I seriously doubt it.

Hell..even the players know Al didn’t want Cable. Even the players saw the “There were two coaches in the running up until the end”..which was BS..Al was hoping for applicants from SB teams..Players also saw the assts ALL BEING HIRED while Cable wasn’t even in town..wasn’t even ON THE PAYROLL.

Players know who’s in charge..and it’s NOT Cable.

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$%%%%%%%%%%%%%%5$$$$$$$$$$$$
If KC is releasing guys on staff that could have been a liability this late in the offseason, by your own measure, is a sign of dysfunction.

Richochet: Uh..how do you measure a OC’s ability without actually playing games? You can’t. Very minimal, at best.

I suspect the OC butted heads with the HC. The LAST THING a new HC needs is your OC not buying into what you’re selling, and not on board with the direction you want to go.

He promoted a guy from within, who know each other, and wants to work WITH HIM..now THAT is making a good executive decision.

Bad executive decision? HC firing a horrible DC, where the owner overrules the HC, and chases the HC out of town..where THE OWNER THEN FIRES THE DC A YEAR LATER.

yep, lol…total chaos..or..as Gannon put it “dysfunctional, from the top down”.

Huff is poor in coverage and worse at tackling.

Eugene is very poor in coverage but can certainly tackle.

I think Eugene is the lesser of two evils.

The safety position will probably end up being Mitchell at SS and Branch at FS, with Baker the occasional center field when they go 3 or 4 deep.

I don’t expect this to occur anytime before the bye.

If Huff can turn in more plays like the one vs. Dallas, maybe he sticks or gets limited reps on obvious passing downs. I just don’t see it happening, though.

Again, you abuse the right to be confused.

Raiders TE’s LED THE TEAM LAST YEAR IN RECEPTIONS.

    Guess you forgot that.
You forget a lot, don’t you?

Damn somebody likes their “hateraide” nice and cold

Cable lost 66.67% of his games, as a Raider anyway and has produced upper echelon offenses wherever he goes. Look at how his NCAA teams ranked in offense overall in the nation. Coached on a Falcons team that went over 2,000 yards on the ground.

Davis did want someone else. Ultimately, he went with the only realistic option he had. Besides, Cable grew up a Raider fan, and stuff like that goes a long way with Davis. Never claimed he was the next Paul Brown.

    But he’ll break your coache’s f*ckin jaw.

Wait, who coaches your team again?

And Kwame Harris. Kiffin and Cable wanted him in. He was a project that didn’t work. As far as I know, the current starter was a Davis pick.

LOL that LMN listens to the GZA. You got to get on the RZA, birth of a prince album. Similar style, better beats, more “thinking” lyrics.

Richochet won’t tell what team he likes. Either he is too ashamed or just chickenshyt. I asks him several times last night and he just kept
    trying to change the subject.

Congrat to Al Davis! He has been ranked the 32nd best owner in the NFL. Looking up at the other 31.
