Update: Pats confirm Seymour to Raiders

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, September 6th, 2009 at 8:44 am in Oakland Raiders.

Have the Raiders attempted to address their issues with run defense with something other than gaps and discipline?

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, help will arrive in the form of Patriots defensive lineman Richard Seymour for a first-round draft pick in 2011.

The Patriots have confirmed a deal is in place, according to the Boston Globe.

An NFL Network report includes quotes from Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

“From the day he arrived in 2001, Richard Seymour established himself as one of our premier players for nearly a decade,” Belichick said. “His presence has been felt as a force on the field, a respected man off it and a multi-year champion.

“Any transaction we make is with the goal of what is best for our team, and, as difficult as it is to part ways with a player of Richard’s stature, many factors were taken into account when we considered this trade. As an organization, we feel the trade with Oakland brings sufficient value and is in the long-term interest of the club. We are extremely grateful for the huge impact Richard’s elite level of performance had on our success and we wish him the very best during the rest of his career.”

Seymour, 29, is a five-time Pro Bowl player, plays end in a 3-4 defense and it remains to be seen if he’ll play tackle in Oakland or if the Raiders defense will encorporate more 3-4 looks. Early in camp and occasionally in the preseason, defensive end Trevor Scott has been playing without a hand on the ground as a standup linebacker.

Seymour’s last game film against the Raiders mostly showed him being handled by Mario Henderson in a game won by the Patriots 49-26. Al Davis cited that game, as well as subsequent efforts by Henderson against Mario Williams and Gaines Adams, as evidence Henderson had arrived as a left tackle.

Over the last six years, Seymour’s Patriots teams have a 77-19 record, winning 10 or more games each season. Over the last six years, the Raiders are 24-72, losing 11 or more games each season. Seymour was a rookie in 2001 when the Patriots beat the Raiders 16-13 in the “Tuck Rule” game.

The Raiders practice today at 12:30 p.m., with media availability to follow . . .

    wow

  2. Lynn from Snot Says:

    finally

  3. vegas raider Says:

    Great job Al!!!!

Sorry Trevor Scott, but you need to step aside now.

  4. Lynn from Snot Says:

High draft picks we don’t need, players we do

  5. radraider Says:

    now get shaun smith

  6. El Tato Says:

We need him to play DE, he should take over Trevor Scott spot.

Maybe move him inside on passing down along with Kelly, with Scott at DE.

  7. Lynn from Snot Says:

Now if we could get one more proven d line man we might stop somebody

  8. TVs Anson Williams Says:

Well, at least no one will be able to mock us for our first round pick in 2011. They’ll have to wait till the second round. Seriously, though, this is a gamble worth taking, although if the Pats were willing to cut him loose, you kind of have to wonder if something’s wrong. I’m sure the Pats fans are high-fiving each other, thinking to the low draft pick they’re certain (in their minds) to get out of the deal.

  9. vegas raider Says:

It might have been a high price to pay, but the Run D and D-line is so bad, something drastic had to happen if they wanted to be serious about contending for the division this year.

So who gets cut to make room on the roster? Todd Watkins would be my choice.

  10. Raider O Says:

Now sign Pollard, Freeman, and Tony Pashos or Meredith.

  11. thekyletk Says:

First this is my first post been reading the site for awhile, but finally broke down and registered

This should make the DL much better and Seymor can hopefully play DT well (playing DE in a 3-4 is like a DT in a 4-3) I’m hoping the starting DL looks like this
RDE Jay Richardson with Trevor Scott coming in on passing downs
    DT Tommy Kelly
    DT Richard Seymor
    LDE Greg Ellis

Man im crying……is that bad? Man im glad we got a true threat on the dline!!! This guy has to be doubled the whole game and then he still gets it done
    =======================================================
I am choked up right now too. This makes up for skipping certain positions in the draft. This is outstanding! No other way to put it.

A Pro-Bowl D-Lineman in his prime…not at the end of his career….in his prime.

And yes, they will sign him long-term. No way you sign a guy like that without having a contract waiting for him!

  13. Lynn from Snot Says:

Seymour adds a winning mentality to a defense that would fold under pressure.

  14. DirtyBathWater Says:

No we don’t need one more dline man…well we could use another body for depth but I think we should go after a better run stopping LB, then we will have arrived, on paper that is! Lol

  15. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

To give up a top ten pick in the 2011 draft for a guy who is 29 and has been on the decline the last two years and a little dinged up (according to Patriot Fans, and also they say we got took)might be too much.

Ok all of that aside this is a HUGE upgrade over Turd Sands!!

Ground control to David (Sam) Bowie pack your bag and clean your locker out…

Now if he, Greg Ellis and Nnamdi can take control of a this defense and lead as experienced veterans and some of these young guys start to follow….we may have turned the corner.

  16. Terrapin Says:

Tommy KELLY next to Richard SEYMOUR!!! HOLY SHYTE!

Now, please lets get someone to replace TScott (JRich perhaps on run downs). Undersized no more.

  17. vegas raider Says:

    SnB,

As it turns out, Richard Seymour, Gregg Ellis, Desmond Bryant and Matt Shannessey were ultimately added to the D-line. That is quite the commitment to improving the D-line, although it didn’t seem like it on draft day, they have now addressed (about as much as you can in one offseason) the D-line issue.

Now if we can only get some LB’s………..

  18. YoungAmerican Says:

Good move. Something needed to be done, that’s for sure.

Now sign Pollard, Pashos, and Mahan, and we might have something here.

  19. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

The biggest win…is that the Oakland Raiders are entering this season with a clarity of what they have on the roster.

No more projecting middling players into superstars…that’s Cable’s influence. They have a better feel for what and who can do what.

No imaginary illusions of that defensive line. EVen they saw how bad it was and how change had to come.

Outstanding. Now, just make the right decision on the Running Back depth chart and we are all set.

  20. DirtyBathWater Says:

Yes I agree SnB we got a dude in his prime and that is what we need especially facing SD wk 1

  21. Sweep The Leg. Says:

This has the potential to give us 2 or 3 wins more this year. A veteran presence that has seen how it should be done.

The other players MUST follow his example though or this will all become a punchline.

I hope it all works out.

  22. 16yearsold16yearfan Says:

Maybe we are trying to make our base 3-4 warren-seymour-kelly
    Ellis(scott)-brown-morrison-howard
Scott and Howard have the speed to be good olb in a 3-4 but I don’t know if scott still has that speed since he got bigger but if he still does it will be a lot easier for him to rush from an upright position than with his hand on the ground since he’s so small and ellis just came from a 3-4 defense

  23. Raider O Says:

    Sign Pollard!!!
    Sign Pashos!!!
    Sign Freeman!!!

  24. vegas raider Says:

Seymour is going to be an end folks, he won’t be in the middle too often (too thin). He is an exceptional pass rusher who can hold the edge on running plays, EXACTLY what we needed. No since trying to teach him a new position a week before week 1.

  25. raiderzride4free Says:

i like this move alot if he stays healthy

  26. Terrapin Says:

Like I said last night: If this defense actually shows up this team can go places real fast! That 2011 pick could end up being #20 something.

  27. DMunoz 26 Says:

Sounds like the Patriots are going to rip the Raiders off again. You don’t trade a first round pick for a 29 year old defensive lineman. Besides, the Patriots are a lot smarter than Al Davis.

  28. vegas raider Says:

Please stop with the 3-4 talk. You need 4 good LB’s to run that, we have 1 MAYBE 2. You need LB’s who are good at blitzing, and we don’t have a single good blitzing LB (Ricky Brown sadly might be our best).

  29. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

Actually now that I think about it this is a great deal because Al would have wasted that pick on a track star anyway(possibly Usain Bolt)

    So yeah this is good!!

  30. Terrapin Says:

I don’t know Vegas. He could be either DE or DT. I too would prefer him at DE replacing TScott making it Ellis/Kelly/Warren/Seymour.

But he can easily play DT as well. We’ll just have to see what Cable says today. But I’m with ya.

  31. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Who cares about that 2011 1st round pick! We’ve got a big payroll because of all the 1st rounders we’ve signed in the past.

Richard Seymour in 2011 will be better than any rookie D-Lineman in that draft.

Now sign this guy long-term…get him his money…so he will be “motivated” on week 1.

  32. doriangray Says:

da haters gonna say we dumb .. :(

  33. Lynn from Snot Says:

I would rather have proven players than high draft pick with potential.

  34. Terrapin Says:

Sht put Seymour as the base end and Ellis at RDE …I don’t know, I’m just stoked …can’t even think straight right now.

  35. doriangray Says:

yall know we can get dat pick back right ? we got commodities. bruce gradkowski.. fargas .. bush … j.lh. kikk returnin … give some team a 2nd and kaliff barnes for a first maybe?

  36. doriangray Says:

    b) my madden team is gonna be ignant …

  37. Terrapin Says:

And for the record – When we got DHall I was NOT stoked …I had to convince myself it was a good move ..it took a long time …but I knew deep down it was bad.

But I’M STOKED ABOUT THIS MOVE!!!

All I worry about is his transition and where they’re going to use him. But I’m not worried much at all because NE ran a 4-3 3-4 hybrid so he’s used to it.

  38. doriangray Says:

now if only we could get shaun rogers.. and da linebackers. morison is good enuff. his d line just lets him down .. howard is above average, hell just rotate 3 guys every drive for the 3rd linebacker spot /…

  39. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

Maybe seeing our run defense against the Whiners and Aints made AD do it. WOW. I’m in.

  40. stoopidmike Says:

GOOD NEWS: good to get rid of a 1st round pick, preventing us to pay guys like DHB tons of 1st round money for 2nd round players. The way we waste 1st rounders, great trade.Saves us all that cash on another bust (dont get me wrong, not calling DHB a bust, just not gonna get bang for that buck) Decoy like james jett,in theory!

BAD NEWS: Seymour probable has lost a step and got beat out by Brace (we know what happened with oakland/brace) or Burgess is looking like a monster off the end, considering seymour place a hybrid of dt/de

Also means Weird Al don’t have much more time on this earth. He’s going for broke because he’s probably not gonna be around in 2011.Another case of us giving away our players to new england on the cheap, and paying a premium to recieve new england players.I still like Seymour,if he’s got any gas in the tank.I wouldve been ecstatic if this trade was 2-3 years ago

  41. jhill Says:

I’m going to wal back to my bed, get back in it, and wait for the alarm to go off. No way I just woke up to Richard Seymore on the team. Not possible.

    GNite yall!

  42. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    5-Time Pro-Bowler in his prime.

Instantly becomes the best D-Lineman on the team.

Becomes the 2nd best defender on the team.

Now have 2 good corners and at least 2 good D-Lineman.

This coupled with getting rid of Garcia has me feeling much better than I did 24 hours ago!

  50. Charlie Says:

Finally, the realization that our Dline did not have the athletes to compete in the NFL.
All of the gap discipline, technique and improved pad level in the world can not upgrade inferior talent at the NFL level.

Sands is finally gone. Burgess was way overpaid given his injury issues and negative attitude.

I would say that the next poorest value on the roster is a toss up between Warren/Kelly.
Given Kelly is coming off his injury he gets another year to produce. (He will never produce up to his contract).

Warren at $5mil a year is a joke and probably ought to go.

I would much rather have a hungry young player than an overpaid cast off like Warren.

  58. doriangray Says:

fargas and a secon rounder ? umm no.. patriots not dumb. dey got backs. dey got fred taylor and maroney .. maybe dat texans can use fargs ,, cant think of another team…

  59. RaiderCraig Says:

I love the move if Richard Seymour is here past this season. His contract is up at the end of 2009, and going into an uncapped 2010, Seymour may rebuff the Raiders on a contract and wait to see what the big market bears. I’m assuming Al will do his best to pay him a hefty amount of money (hell he paid the Turd and Kelly big bucks, without either one proving themselves). Also, as a lot have been mentioning, Al Davis doesn’t have a great record as far as number 1 picks go anyway, so this way we know we have an All-Pro talent for at least the next 3-4 years… That is if he signs.

  60. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

“For once, the Raiders are taking a gifted player from the Patriots rather than vice versa. The Patriots fleeced Al Davis for receiver Randy Moss and acquired pass-rusher Derrick Burgess this summer.” – ESPN

I love it! A good well-regarded free agent!

    Outstanding!

  61. doriangray Says:

hmm.. the texans do have xavier adibi on the bench bedind demeco ryans and brian cushing.. . ?

  62. Raider O Says:

    Sign Tony Pashos!!!!!

  63. jhill Says:

    It’s real simple …

Kelly and Seymore need to play next to each other.

    LDE Shaugnessy
    DT Kelly
    DT Seymour
    RDE Ellis

Bryant, Scott, Warren, and Joseph off the bench.

    CUT RICHARDSON!

  64. RaiderRobG Says:

BTW, on my remaining wish list is a Fargas trade for Hawk in GB and maybe then we could get Kevin Carter to reconsider his retirement.

    Maybe even Levi Jones too.

  65. doriangray Says:

if pashos comes 4 da cheap then sounds good. he can play guard .. but his agent wants big money .

Naw, they saw the state of the current D-Line and realized they needed an impact player there. All the experiments weren’t working.

So they go and get one of the best. The Pats did the move because of salary cap considerations…not because they wanted to lose the guy.

Pats fans aren’t happy about the trade.

You know this is a good deal…provided they can keep him beyond this year!

Good deal for Oakland and makes the D-Line a good one now. I have no problem with Ellis, Kelly and Seymour….

  67. neilb Says:

    morning craig…..

just thinking out loud Dorian. It’s an instant upgrade to a pi$$ poor Dline but I think the pats came out of the trade better than we did.

Your guy Garcia couldn’t beat out Gratkowski and Frye. That’s ok though. I am sure there are teams beating down the door to get Garcia’s services right now.

Seymour is still a great player. Just finished up with a solid year…8 sacks. They couldn’t sign him and Vince Wilfork and Tom Brady. Not enough money.

This trade is a win for us and the next best alternative for the Pats….a win/win for a change

yeah cornell green .. ? hmm? kendall simmons can play guard , he still out there.. move barnes to right tackle.

  97. jhill Says:

We run the ZBS cut back system, remember? Run to one side, cut back up.

McFadden and Rankin are just fine at that.

And like I said, trade McFadden then if you love Bush. A backup for a starter is not even debateable.

  98. doriangray Says:

OK, so he’s not fresh out of the box… But the guy doesn’t miss games due to injury, he’s definitely an upgrade over Trevor Scott AND he takes some pressure off the LBs… Hey, Scott’s a medium sized DE – make him a situational 4th linebacker or something…
1st round pick? Who cares… look at how well the last 5 went for Big Al…
    Go Raiders!

  100. neilb Says:

    Sorry….. who’s been cut.

No more complaints from me on the defense. Let’s go.

  103. Terrapin Says:

I’m starting to think they’ll put him at DT in our scheme and utilize the 3-4 a tad bit more.

According to Raiderbeat he played DT in NE before they switched to the 3-4 where he kicked out ot DE.

David White makes a solid point – if Seymour won’t sign the Raiders would just franchise him for 2yrs. Still Al, has to sign him long term to make it worth it. His last days must be RAIDER.

  104. jhill Says:

Not sure what you guys are trying to acquire, but I’m looking for another impact player like we got today. You are not going to get that player by giving up Fargas or Rankin. Are you kidding me? You may be able to pull that off with the GMs in your fantasy leagues, but that’s just not going to happen in the real world. 1st round picks, or really good players to get something in return. Again, reference today’s trade.

  105. Charlie Says:

LOL! I think they will keep Warren for the remainder of this year. Any new deal given to Seymour will have those pro-rated bonus games in it. So the salary cap won’t be the big issue. The issue is do they want to keep 5 DTs or not. Or maybe they keep them all and start moving players around based on down and distance….You know, different looks…

Full disclosure, I’m a Pats fan that wanted to get a Raiders’ take on this.

From my view, this could potentially be a boon for the Pats. They gave up one year of Richard Seymour’s services, as they have a handful of potential FA’s to address that would almost certainly have precluded the re-signing of Seymour. The big money extension required to keep Seymour is now the Raiders’ responsibility, as will be the soon to arriving, less productive high dollar years of his extension.

In return the Raiders have given up what is sure to be high first round pick. Their defense is awful and clearly more than one player away from respectability… Jamarcus Russell could very well be a prodigous bust on his way to being among the worst starting QBs in the league… the coaching staff is in utter disarray and may be completely overmatched… and most importantly the team is run by a stubborn old man that the modern game has clearly passed by. From an unbiased point of view, there is little reason to think that the Raiders have much hope of being competitive, much less playoff ready, any time soon. They could in fact be the worst team in the league in two years with no first round pick to show for it.

The absolute best case for the Raiders is that this is a fair trade that works for them short term. In the worst case, they just got fleeced.

    Anyone care to disagree?

  166. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

I agree 100% Let him do what he DOES BEST. The right side of our defense was constantly getting TORCHED for big run plays. Ellis and Seymour at the two end spots is excellent. Let Scott, Richardson and Shaughnessy back them up.

Kelly, Bryant and Joseph in the middle is fine. I would cut Warren and get Shaun Smith as well. Just my opinion.

But new blood on the D-Line is needed. Not comfortable, inconsistent, underachievers like Warren.

    agreed

what I would do in those “situations” is put him in the QBs face more and move him to the left side looking for better matchups against the fatties down the line on passing downs.

and on the 1st & 2nd downs he can use his experience to sniff out a possible PA-pass and even push a LT back into a play to be effective from the blind side facing possibly more one on one situations then in a 3-4

    ======================================================
    Andrew33,

This is an excellent move by Oakland. The defense here has some decent talent in spots but had some big holes. The holes were so big that they consumed the entire defense. Seymour plugs the biggest hole which is a physical D-Lineman that can play the run AND get to the passer. He makes some the decent to good players better. For example, a guy like Tommy Kelly can’t get double teamed as much with Seymour on the D-Line. This gives him the opportunity to be a differnce maker. Kelly getting better gives Ellis more opportunities on the edge…a guy that you were trying to go after yourselves.

As for our linebackers, our delicate to the touch linebackers, now they won’t have as many Guards and Centers charging down on them on every run play. This SHOULD allow them to use their speed and crash the line and make plays.

If we can slow down the run and put some pressue on the QB, that makes our secondary better. And that’s this team’s strength.

As for the future, we are ok provided we sign Seymour long-term. Seymour at 29/30 should have a good 4 to 6 years of elite ball left in him. Given that our defense was indefensible up to this morning, this trade HAD to be made.

Also, hopefully Seymour’s influence can rub off on guys like our rookie DT Bryant, Jay Richardson and Matt Shaughnessy.

THis is a great deal for the Raiders!

Raiders still need a run stuffer next to Kelly if Seymour is to play RDE like all you guys are praying for
    =======================================================
True, but if Seymour goes to RDE, at least the edge won’t get wiped out play after play after play.

Seymour should give Marshall some more options on his playcalling. If Seymour is the RDE he will be forcing runs to the inside, at least that won’t spread out the defense as much

Shawne Merriman busted for battery, false imprisonment
Posted by Mike Florio on September 6, 2009 1:22 PM ET
The days prior to the 2008 regular-season opener were dominated by discussion regarding whether Chargers linebacker Shawne Merriman would be able to play due to a torn PCL.

This year, the question is whether Merriman will be able to play after allegedly assaulting a D-level television celebrity named Tila Tequila.

Merriman allegedly “choked and physically restrained” Tequila as she tried to leave his San Diego residence.

He was taken into custody at 3:45 p.m. local time and charged with battery and false imprisonment. Tequila was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

  203. Chris in NY Says:

    – Rookie Zach Follett would be a good pickup, IMO. Great production at Cal and great measurables. Don’t know why he couldn’t make the cut in Detroit, but worth a flyer.

    – Is Zach Thomas totally cooked at this point, or could be fill in for one season at MLB with Kirk kicking outside. Put Seymour, Thomas and Ellis in that front 7 and I think you get dramatically better effort out of the physically talented Warren and Kelly. Not worried about T-Howard at all. Scott could come in as a situational pass rusher.

    – I’d get Bernard Pollard, cut Bowie and make Huff a full-time corner. I think Huff’s only chance to really succeed in this league is at CB. Put him in at No. 4 and see what he can do at that position. Pollard could challenge Eugene for the starting spot and bring a physical presence to the secondary.

  204. Florida Pete Says:

    okay…

so who is going to stop the run???

    apparently “we” are…

not excited about the price tag…

    Richard Seymour 2009: $3.685 million, 2010: Free Agent…

essentially we traded the “Turd” & a 1st rounder in 2011 for one year of Richard Seymour services…

No way Al doesn’t at least try to sign him to a record-deal, just like the Deangelo sign and trade last year. This one should work out a little better, IMO.

  217. Kush Says:

WE need a space eating, middle clogging, DT. Warren IS NOT the answer next to Kelly. Bryant is a rookie, has promise but is still learning. Joseph is not a starter. He’s a decent back up.

I say Shaun Smith. He just got cut, is looking for a job, was a starter last season, and he is 6-2, 325-330 lbs.

Not too tall, so he can get leverage, but big enough to clog the middle.

I think it’s the best move we could make on the D-Line right now.

Seymour (or Kelly) has to play DE. Most of the times teams run on us it’s because the DE gets wiped out and the linebackers get sucked into the middle or are otherwise out of position to make the tackle.

i would like to know whether Big Al came to some kind of agreement with Seymour on an extension…

just looked at PFT.com and if you omit all the raiderhatespeech (yeah, that’s a word) what they say is right on…

and it did occur to me as well… there will probably be a rookie cap by that year…

which means we threw away a 1st rounder for one year’s worth of service from Seymour…

  231. El Tato Says:

I think either Jay Richardson or Gerard Warren are gone after this.

I would prefer to see Seymour playing DE for us (and keep Scott as a pass rusher), maybe playing inside in obvious passing downs along with Kelly, Scott and Ellis.

  232. Norco Bob Says:

Id merriman was playin a team the league like merriman would be suspended,..not for this opener though.

  233. andrew33 Says:

If the Raiders make the playoffs and it is a low first rounder they have given up, I’ll admit that I was incorrect in my evaluation. That would, however, have to happen to make this a fair trade.

My point was that the Raiders are a team that has all the trapping of continued mediocrity. Could they turn it around? Of couse… in a league where the Cardinals can go to the SB anything can happen. In terms of probability, recent history shows the Raiders to be one of the most poorly run organizations in all of proffesional sports. Hope may spring eternal in Raider land, but the odds are clearly stacked against you.

So much has to go right for this to work out of the Raiders, and there is potential for so much to go wrong.

    Regarding the Seymour deal,

Interesting to read the comments by Pats fans on a Pats site. A couple think it was a good move but the vas majority are stunned. This comment probably sums up the consensus opinion from their end:

“In Bill we trust but this one is hard to digest…”

Sounds like most fans think Seymour — who led the team in sacks with 8 last season — is still a great player. And 8 sacks is a very good total from a 3-4 DE. It’s much tougher for those guys to get sacks than a 4-3 DE.

You can read their thoughts here:

Andrew33 is the typical patriots fan coming to realize that his old superbowl players are either retiring, being traded and pluggin in old raider players from the art shell era! This is completely a steal from the patriots knowing them they could not extend a contract for Seymour’s services considering what tommy kelly got!AL Davis will be ready to cashout on RS if he produces a all-probowler game. Andrew33 can you envision the patriots going to the superbowl with the young talent that have been placed? The Patriots got a good system but it wont work if you have the wrong players, alot of you patriot fans wont admit that your team is in the decline and young players will learn disappointment in an early age! Trust me the raiders have been in every situation possible. Al davis is just living his legacy win or lose, while the patriots are hanging on hoping to pass competition just like what happened in the TUCK GAME!

Gotta give it to ya. I didn’t think that a MEANINGFUL trade or acquisition would happen. No way. thought it would be some plodding middle of the road guy…

  271. Bo Schembechler Jackson Says:

I think Shaughnessy is a better player than Scott. Stronger, bigger frame to grow on, better every down DE and high motor. Scott looks like a young white Kalimba Edwards.

  272. Bob Marley Says:

    Well, that was unexepected.

Here’s the way I see it.

The deal, we give up 2011 1st round pick which means we’ll to “pay the bill” for Seymour 2 years from now, since we didn’t give up any players and we didn’t give up picks in next year’s draft.

It’s been mentioned before, we got a versatile pro bowl DL, who should have 3 good years left, we just shored up our weakest unit….we have no idea what that 1st rounder in 2011 would turn into….we need help now, not 2 years from now.

Because of the Burgess trade, we have the Pats 3rd rounder next year, that gives the Raiders 4 picks in the top 96 in next year’s draft, more young players are on the way next season, it’s not like we mortgaged our future with this deal.

Can’t wait to hear Chris Berman say “Tommy is really hurting today because the Broncos lost yet again.”, as Tom Jackson sulks off to the side.

Screw that! I want to win. And Merriman not playing gives the Raiders a better chance to win.

No Merriman and we added Seymour. That’s what I am talking about!

    Fixing the DLINE specifically.
By far the most overpaid and underperforming unit on the team. Until now.
Cut Warren and I would say most of the problem has been cleaned up to where we can at least be respectable.

Still not in the class of the Giants etc.
    =======================================================
True…but now we should be competitive and that’s all I was asking for.

Seymour is a difference maker. He was traded because of cap room to pay Vince Wilfork and Tom Brady. That’s the ONLY reason the Pats made the move.

I like the Raiders aggressiveness here. A D-Lineman! Not a cornerback or receiver or safety….A D-Lineman!

I bet they first inquired about Wilfork and the Pats said how about Seymour. Sounds good to me!

No Merriman and we add Seymour and the energy he will bring.

I hope Seymour makes the 1st tackle of the game by slamming LT behind the line of scrimmage. Crowd goes wild!

    ==============================================

I would. The Patriots are an OLD TEAM. Brady is 10 years in, Moss is 12 years, Brushci was 14 years, Adalius Thomas is 10 years and Joey Galloway is 15 years. The only Raiders with 10 years in the league are their kickers. And Carlise. New England HAD to make that deal.
As for your statement the coaching staff is in dissaray, this roster has Tom Cable’s hands all over it. If you are talking about how the Raiders looked in the preseason, didn’t your New England Idiots go winless in the preseason two seasons ago??
As for Seymour himself, we probably would have been better off doing the same deal for Ty Warren. Sure, Seymour is a five time pro bowler, but he has not been since 06. That’s the bad news. The good news is he lead the Idiots in sacks last year with 7. Couple that, with the leadership that Greg Ellis is now exhibiting, and maybe FINALLY, some sorely needed respected leadership can emerge on that Raider team.
As for your comments about Russell, it shows you don’t know a lot about football to say the least. And no one in the league would agree with you. Jamarcus is getting more and more recognition as growing into the position of starting NFL Q. There is NO ONE with any knowledge of QB play doubting that.

  299. Bob Marley Says:

Here’s the best part about this deal, we needed help inside and outside, Richard Seymour is one of the few guys who can play DT or DE and make a difference, his versatility will actually shore up 2 positions because he can line up anywhere on the Line.

I’m sure the Patriots had other offers..but the Raiders are no threat. Not a threat now or prob ever as long as Al Davis is ruining this franchise.

But a solid move for the Raiders, who needed help on the D-Line. With this addition of Seymore and the offseason addition of Greg Ellis..I think the Raiders defense has a solid veteran presence. And along with that presence ..comes leadership. And the Raiders are searching for leaders

  320. angelodebo Says:

I also think this shows how the Patriots feel about Ron Brace..the player the Raiders past on to draft Mike “never see the field as a starter” Mitchell. Brace was the key to this deal getting done. No way the Pats would release Seymore unless they were confident with who was going replace him. He was still under contract for this year..So…Brace must be good!

  322. Richard Bentley Says:

You can see where Al is coming from a mile away on this one. He figures Russell will be polished enough in a maximum of two years to take them to the playoffs, and with the run defense up to par, the draft pick won’t be worth nearly as much as Belichick figures it will be. This is a good move, and even better if we can hang on to him after his contract expires without putting a franchise tag on him. Way to go, Al.

Sure, Jarvis Green or Mike Wright can step in, but will they cause the same fear that Seymour has caused for years? Absolutely not. In my opinion, absolutely not.

Seymour, 29, can do say many things for a defense. He is the prototypical 3-4 end, with the height, size, and strength to hold up blockers. Yet, unlike most 3-4 defensive ends, he has great quickness and burst, and is an elite pass rusher who can stay in on passing downs. He can also shift inside, as well as play outside in the 4-3. He was the jack of all trades for defensive lineman, who got consistently double and triple teamed week in and week out.”

Wilfork: Losing Seymour like losing family
    Email|Link|Comments (4) Posted by Christopher L. Gasper, Globe Staff September 6, 2009 01:49 PM
FOXBOROUGH — A sleepy Sunday morning was turned upside down for members of the Patriots defense when they learned that defensive end Richard Seymour had been traded to the Oakland Raiders for a 2011 first-round pick.

Seymour woke up linemates and friends nose tackle Vince Wilfork and defensive end Ty Warren to let them know he had been traded.

“Big Sey”, as his teammates affectionately called him, was saying see ya.

A melancholy Wilfork said losing Seymour was like losing family, both on and off the field and that he will be missed. Wilfork lamented the breakup of one of the best defensive lines in the NFL, but said he and the team have no choice but to move on.

“We’re all professionals. Change happens all the time. Every year you have change, you have roster change, you have everything changing,” said Wilfork. “This is another change and we’re going to have to deal with it. I don’t care how you feel about it. You got to deal with it and move on. We’re getting ready for the most important game of our season, Monday night against a divisional rival, so we have to put everything aside and work.”

Warren said that Seymour had confided in him that he thought the writing was on the wall regarding his Patriots career and that something like a trade could happen before the season.

“Sey felt like something was going to happen along these lines,” said Warren. “He mentioned that to me months prior to this happening. I didn’t put much thought into it.”

Warren, who said he was in a hotel room at the Renaissance Boston Hotel & Spa at Patriot Place when he got the news, said that he thought Seymour was joking with him at first.

“I just told him, ‘Stop lying. It’s Sunday. Man, you serious? It’s Sunday. Don’t be coming at me like that.’ I took a nap and woke up and there were 10 more text messages. I was like alright let me look into this deal and then it was true,” said Warren.

“He will definitely be missed. I got his phone number. It won’t be hard to talk to him, but as far as a teammate he’ll definitely be missed, but again it’s the nature of the business. He knew that. It came to fruition and that’s what it is.”

On the surface it’s hard to see how the trade makes the Patriots a better team in the short-term, losing a five-time Pro Bowl defensive end. Warren was asked if you have to trust the organization.

“Absolutely, only they know where we are and where we’re going, so you got to trust them to know what they’re going to do,” said Warren.

Warren said he’s not going to change his game to try to compensate for Seymour’s loss opposite him at defensive end.

“I blaze my own trails. What one person does doesn’t determine what I do. What I do is pretty much in stone,” said Warren “They know what they’re going to get out of me. I’m not really a rah-rah guy. I don’t feel like I’m going to need any extra rah-rah. I’m just going to do what Ty Warrens does and that is stick to the plan, work hard. That’s kind of my motto.”

Warren said there are veteran players who can pick up the leadership slack for Seymour. But young players will be asked to do that too, including second-year linebacker and preseason defensive captain Jerod Mayo.

Mayo admitted the business side of the NFL, as compared to college, has been eye-opening

“I’ve only been here two years and I’m surprised every day, especially today and yesterday,” said Mayo.

Mayo said he is not going to change his leadership approach because of Seymour’s absence.

“Not really. I’m just going to come to work every day and keep chipping at the rock, trying to get better and learn my teammates,” said Mayo. “They’re changing every day, and hopefully we can get some consistency here soon and compete [next] Monday night.”

Wilfork, who seemed the most upset by the trade, said the shipping out of Seymour to Oakland is a stark reminder that the business side of the game is never going away.

“It is what it is. Don’t get it twisted, it is a business and you have to move on,” said Wilfork. “We will. As a defensive lineman, as a friend of his, as an organization and a team, we have to move on from it and we will. This is shocking, but at the same time that’s the business side to it. That’s nothing but business and you just move on from it. Forget how you feel about it. You have to deal with it.”

While I like the acquisition of Seymour, Al Davis has once again been taken behind the woodshed by the New England Patriots. Al overpaid for this guy big time. A second should have been sufficient. Seymour was a great player but it is apparent that he is on the downside of his career and has only one year left on his contract. Al gave up what will probably be a top 10 pick to acquire this guy. WTF???? I guess if that pick was going to be used on a player like DHB, Michaael Huff or Patrick Bates then it might lessen the blow. Al, please do us all a favor and take that dirt nap ASAP as we doomed to be bottom dwellers as long as you run this organization.

  341. angelodebo Says:

If Al would’ve drafted Brace..like everyone on this site and every Raider fan thought he should have drafted..we would not have to give up a first round pick for a d-lineman on the decline. We could of had a yound d-lineman on the rise and our first round pick!

Al knows Russell’s going to stink up the joint, and he doesn’t want a 3 time pro bowler on the sideline while he does so, because it will raise questions as to just how bad this owner really want to “win more badly than any owner in the game”. It never stops. Al Davis deserves nothing but agony, and he’s going to get it, on a platter.

Merriman heard that Tila liked chicks and he figured that since his junk has all but disappeared from the roids that he might have a chance.

  367. RaiderNsuede Says:

I am demanding protests. Merriman should be suspended for at least 8 games given his past.

How can a society come down hard on Vick for fighting dogs…yet turn a blind eye to a 250+ pound roid raged linebacker choking out a 5′4 asian woman

  370. angelodebo Says:

Bo..ur probably right about Brace not making 5 pro bowls..but he might..If Belicheck was willing to give a 5 time Pro Bowler for a high paying first round draft choice, then I think he know Seymore’s replacement is pretty damn good.

Belichec is doing any team any favors!! Someone has shown enough in the pre-season and practice to allow this trade to happen. I’m guessing Brace is stud! And good ol Al drafted a safety who will and already is a laughing stock.

  371. Raiderwoj Says:

We traded a 2011 1st round pick for a ProBowler on D, thats a great thing. It upgrades our defense, brings in a WINNER, and a LEADER for 3+ Mil. If he works out for us we tag him next year, cause I doubt long term contract would work out cause it will be his 10th season. We also have 2 years to get back into the 1st round, not like it can’t be done(if there is no lockout). If we can get a full 2 seasons outta him at close to the top of his game, it will have been worth it.

  372. los9091 Says:

Well Thec…………….in John Marshall’s defense he used guys Seymour’s size as run stuffers. Seymour is ultra talented as he has played different techniques throughout his career since he is a 3-4/4-3 Dlineman. I remember his rookie year when he played in the middle at times and he handled quite well

  377. RaiderDogg Says:

Tila said “no” and Merriman choked her out, threw her to the ground and punctuated it with the trademark “Lights Out” dance.

Now the only “Lights Out” Merriman will get is when the guard yells “Lights Out” in cell block 4.

  378. Brien the General Says:

Is Merriroids an idiot? Sadly this society focuses on ethnicity too much but seriously……a 6′5 270 black pro athlete bullying a petite Asian whore? What is this guy’s problem?

  379. chappy23us Says:

Raiderwoj, you dont justify giving up a first round pick by saying “if it works out”. Al Davis has clearly lost it. We gave up top ten pick for a guy with one year left on his contract and on the downside of his career. Dirt Nap for Al!

  380. los9091 Says:

Wouldn’t you guys rather have Raji this year and many years to come…and still have our 1st round pick next year???

Rather than an old DT and a WR that cant catch?

Louis Murphy is going to have better stats than DHB this year anyways.

  381. angelodebo Says:

If we franchinse Seymore..that will ruin this whole deal. So we give a 1st round pick for a player on a 2yr contract? HA! If that happens..then its obvious Al has been diagnosed and will be dying in the next two years…and he has no plans for the future..

if that happens, I will spit on Al’s grave!

    =========================================================

Al’s been dealing with the Pats for years where do you think we got Mike Haynes from? That was a robbery that brought us a Super Bowl! What goes around comes around. 392. RaiderRetribution Says:

$15-20 million guaranteed off the books for 2011 1st round draft choice,

  393. angelodebo Says:

los9091..ur right! Al is terrible in the draft! We could’ve drafted Raji/Brace and kept our 1st round pick in 2011..but Seymore is def an upgrade..

I think we should’ve used that 1st round pick on an o-lineman. We drafted QB, RB, WR in the 1st round the past three years..and yet the o-line is suspect. Does that make sense to anyone? only Al I guess!

  394. Brien the General Says:

Say what you want about Garcia but he is 39 y/o.
Cable has really focused on bringing in high character guys and Mr Davis is supporting him.

Anyone who thinks Garcia would help the Raiders more than JR is out of touch with reality.

Whoever we release to make room for Seymour needs to offeset the salary hit as well.
It is not just one for one in terms of a roster spot.

  398. Brien the General Says:

The only time we were robbed or so called robbed by the Pats was the tuck game. Name the other times please. Moss won a ring? WE were happy to get rid of burgess. Walter?

  399. chappy23us Says:

If they would have given up a second or a third for this guy I would not have had such an issue with this deal. New England probably offered him for a 1st hoping Al would offer a 2nd or 3rd. Even they had to be schocked when Al agreed.

To answer your questions NO. No guarantee that Raji will be a Pro Bowler. The fact that people think your career is over because you turn 30 is stupid even though father time is undefeated but in reality our Dline needed another veteran who commands league wide respect with his play. I just hope he stays healthy and productive for our D.

  428. angelodebo Says:

Thats what I thought Brien..your the jacksass.. get ur head out of Al’s arse and back into reality. The Pats trade for Moss was a terrible deal for Oakland..they should’ve and could’ve got more.

This trade..they could have a gotten Seymore for less. Probably a 2nd and 4th..But they know Al is senile and dumb.. so a they got a first rounder.

I still think this helps the Raiders..but they could’ve gotten help in the draft. Instead they drafted a fast decoy who probably play second fiddle to the 4th round pick and a 2nd round pick who is the biggest laughing stock ever. Probably be cut next year.

I agree that he may eventually turn into a good player, but this idea that not drafting Ron Brace was a horrendous error and Mike Mitchell is a wasted pick is absurd. Mitchell could become the next Jack Tatum and Brace a journeyman DT. You don’t know.

The Raiders have screwed up a lot of stuff, but I just don’t get people pulling their hair out over two players that haven’t even played a down yet. Also, as far as I know, Brace isn’t even going to start in New England, assuming they stick with the 3-4. And Brace and Seymour play completely different positions so I’m not sure what this trade really has to do with him.
