Morrison to start at MLB, Brown at SLB

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, September 7th, 2009 at 3:13 pm in Oakland Raiders.

More news and notes from Tom Cable’s post-practice press briefing:

– Kirk Morrison was limited in practice Tuesday, but is expected to play and will start at middle linebacker, Cable said. He’ll be flanked on the strong side by Ricky Brown, who will start ahead of Jon Alston.

“He’s doing more and more within the practice so I think we’re pretty close actually for full-time,” Cable said.

Asked about the decision to start Brown on the strong side, Cable said the difference was “consistency. Wherever he was at he was pretty consistent.”

– Patriots spokesman Stacy James told the Associated Press he’s not aware of any “issues” holding up the trade of Richard Seymour to the Raiders.

New England announced the deal on its Web site Sunday, complete with quotes from coach Bill Belichick.

The key words in Cable’s statement regarding Seymour is that the Raiders have “attempted to make a deal” meaning that they don’t consider it a done deal.

The Raiders also eventually posted the trade on their Web site transactions, as well as announcing it on their Twitter account.

– Cable continued to play it coy regarding his starting running back, saying Justin Fargas wasn’t necessarily out of the race even though he’s still sidelined with a hamstring strain.

“We’re closer. We’re just not ready to cut it loose yet,” Cable said.

On Sunday, Cable said he expected to name a starter Thursday, so he won’t drag it out to a ridiculous extreme with his quarterbacks before the 2007 season opener.

– Second-round draft pick Mike Mitchell will play on special teams against San Diego, but Cable isn’t sure if he’ll be ready to play in a limited defensive role in some packages.

“I think we’ll see as the week, we’re fortunate to have this long period of time before the first one,” Cable said. “He’s catching it pretty quick but his primary role has to be special teams in the first game.”

– “Tremendously intelligent guy. Whatever limitations he has, he overcomes them with his brain and knowing where to put his body, and knowing how to get there. He just kind of plugs along and just keeps grinding and trying to perfect what he does. He’s smart enough to understand where his limitations are and how to fix them and work on them,” Cable on starting center Chris Morris, an upset winner at the position over Samson Satele.

– Morrison and CB Nnamdi Asomugha (wrist) were limited. Fargas and WR Chaz Schilens (foot) did not practice. T Khalif Barnes continued to work in some drills with the offensive line. LB Isaiah Ekejiuba (shoulder) was practicing.

Cable is pleased with the Raiders health, with Schilens and Barnes potentially being the only scratches because of injury.

“I’m getting excited because we are approaching it,” Cable said. “I was thinking about that this morning. Each day we get a little more and a little more. Come next week, we should be pretty darned close.”

Riccochet, you want to know why I stopped taking guys like RaiderDogg seriously? And same goes for Florida Pete. When I take a few days off from here, and come back to read the comments, I notice these guys are saying the same things I say about Al Davis. Even Brien! I think it’s a thing where they want to be the resident critical bloggers, and don’t want anyone taking their spotlight. As much as they stick up for Al when I’m around, they seem to take on the same view of Al Davis that I have once they’re doing fighting with me. These guys are just threatened by someone else playing in their sandbox. That’s all it is. Of course, now one of them is taking their dramatic fit to an entirely new level.”

Now you are just talking out of your ass. Give me one single example of me ever posting the way you desribed I do here. ONE example. The archives are there, feel free to back up your own words with actual FACTS!

    yeah, what he said…

and that goes double for me…

i want TWO examples!!! The archives are there, feel free to back up your own words with actual FACTS!

    uh…

    first.

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

Hey look at it this way. Regardless of how the Seymour thing pans out…at least they are trying to get better and acknowledge the gap on the D-Line.

    Give them credit for trying.

I still think Seymour is in by Wednesday practice. I bet he wants that long-term deal inked before they start playing

  • HayesDaze37

Seymour @ RDE will allow Scott to play over his shoulder. 3-4 lookin’ better all the time?

  • 24

All I know is…if Seymour doesn’t mind being a Raider and he gets his contract, what a trade. The guy is a 5 Time Pro Bowler. The guy is a defensive lineman. The guy has 3 Superbowl Rings. The guy is very good against the run and the pass. WE NEED A RDE. My biggest issue with our defensive line and I have gone over this many times has been that our defensive ends have been too small to hold the point of attack. Our DT’s have been forced to pickup the slack of for our overmatched and undersized outside lineman and runs to the outside have been frequent and successful for other teams.

We finally have a guy who can bully the offensive line on the outside, who can contain the run from getting outside and who can also put some pressure on the QB. He takes ALOT of stress off Kelly and Warren and keeps them from getting double teamed and that alone is going to help us in getting pressure on the QB. HES ONLY 29 YEARS OLD. I’m excited about this trade. Hes even listed as the 6th best defensive lineman by Scouts Inc. I’ll trade 1st round picks for sure talent any freakin day. Trade next years 1st rounder for Anquan Boldin for all I care.

  • 24

I still don’t think we’re built for the 3-4 and I don’t care to see it unless its coached by someone who actually knows what they’re doing. Marshall is a 4-3 guy.

Also…If Cable still starts Fargas, hes a freakin idiot. McFadden or Bush are clearly the better players. I don’t give a fuk.

  • HayesDaze37

ANY player in the prime of his career…of which, half (or more) of his years have resulted in Pro Bowl invites…who can offer what your team desperately needs (like Boldin and yes, Seymour, et al)…is worth a #1 draft pick every time.

Pro Bowl vet vs rookie draft pick? Proven player vs coin flip? Not even a debate.

I’ve been begging Al to go get Boldin for 2+ years. Since he didn’t find a way to do that…I’m glad to see DHB, and anxious to watch him turn into a star.

I don’t care to ever have a #1 pick again…if it means we keep trading for healthy Pro Bowlers.

  • 24

I’m feeling a little nervous with the idea of Murphy and DHB starting the regular season. I just don’t think they’re polished enough yet. Walker and Higgins should start. Murphy has showed some good signs but he needs to take care of the football better. JLH had the same issues at one point. DHB didn’t do too much in the pre-season which only leads me to believe that hes not getting open. I just think we should start our most experienced and ready guys in Walker/Higgins until Schilens comes back. I just don’t want to see our passing game disappear.

  • 24

Hayes – That only makes sense to me. 1st Round Draft picks for Pro Bowlers. Isn’t that what a team desires to happen anyways? I say go for the sure thing. I think teams just want the credit of finding and turning that player into a special one.

  • http://i380.photobucket.com/albums/oo249/the408RAIDER/749px-I-420svg.png 408RAIDER

yo huff… why do you still have crabtree on your FF team?? hahahahahaha :P

  • HayesDaze37

24 — There isn’t an NFL D-coordinator or HC who doesn’t know how to coach a 3-4. Teams (including your Raiders) play 3-4 during games every week, even when they’re “4-3 teams.”

The best D-coordinators utilize their best players at their best skills. We need to find ways to get Trevor Scott’s speed on the field at the same time as Seymour. Not coincidentally, in a few packages, doing that would move Brown to the Inside along WITH Morrison.

4-3, 3-4…anything else they want to draw up…Seymour fits.

This is why the home delivery newspaper is becoming obsolete. Thanks for the cutting edge updates, Jerry!

  • 24

408 – I was in San Diego this weekend and only glanced at my team (which looks pretty good) but I just haven’t made the adjustments yet. Hey…Crabtree is a catch. I’ll trade him to you for your best player. What a deal!

Hayes – In my opinion, our defense looks confused enough as it is, even when things look simple so that last thing I want is our team making it anymore difficult than it already is for our out of position defense.

LMAO at you getting all sensitive on me calling out your idiot posts regarding madden being here “10 hours straight”.
Like I said, go to previous thread, hit ctrl f, type in madden’s name, and your dumbass will see he wasn’t here all day, like you said.

I know, I know..you saw my previous post before the mod started whacking posts..including your whine to other posters about madden “being on for ten hours straight.”

So..go..child..tell us when Madden’s last post was and when he came back..then state ‘I truly am dumber than cotton”.

  • 24

408 – haha. I was making you sweat hahaha. Don’t hate the player, hate the game my friend. Honestly…I didn’t even touch the rankings. I just thought I’d go with whoever. I’m going to win no matter how I pick the players anyways haha. Just playin.

It is great news to hear that the coach did talk to Seymour. And that he wants to be here, there must be some money that the Pat’s owe him that’s the sticking point.

Now you guy’s know why I have always questioned the media. At any rate we have a really decent Dline now. that will get much better as they play together and the young guy’s develope. If we stay relatively healthy we could eventually be a good vs the run. last year before Rickey brown got hurt at SLB we were a much better run defense after he got hurt we went downhill fast.

Slade Norris gives us a much bigger player at SLB when and if he gets to the point that he can take that job. he can carry 250 on his frame. And he is hands down the best edge rusher and blitzer we have at the LB position. He is very similar to T Scott in that way.

  • neilb

Are there any free agent Middle LB’s that we should be bringing in to have a look at ?

  • SC

Jmac: Patroits have no idea what “issues” Seymour has with them. The trade is a done deal according to the league.

    Drama…..folks….pure Drama!

  • neilb

Maybe he thinks he’s due some kind of loyalty bonus/pay-off because he didn’t ask for a trade.

  • Raider-405

My instinct regarding this is the ONLY reason that Seymore hasnt arrived yet is because the extension isnt worked out yet.

Al Davis is a screwed business man. He wouldnt give up a 1st round pick for a one year player.

  • http://snotmerch.com/ Lynn from Snot

    posting out of order ?

  • Terrapin

There’s definitely something going on though. Who cares what a Patriots spokesperson says. The fact is there are some “issues” if he has yet to report.

Honestly, I wouldn’t want to go to a team that I perceived to be complete trash – and I’m sure he got a lot of that from Andy, Moss, Burgess, Jordan et al. That sht’ll be embarrassing and would take some time to marinate.

  • Terrapin

But money talks and BS walks.

Lets see how this all plays out. Al better have a deal ready or this deal is asinine. Then again he’ll be here for 3 yrs minimum. Still a deal must be consummated.

Nice spin by coach Cable, put all the blame on the Pats. Seymour wants to be here, and the Raiders want him, but those darn Pats are holding it up!!! LOL!!!!

I guess it would have been foolish to expect things to go along super-smooth. Not in Raider-ville these days, it’s got to have some drama involved.
