Seymour a.m. update
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, September 8th, 2009 at 7:46 am in Oakland Raiders.
Your Richard Seymour a.m. update for those who have not seen the following reports:
– The NFL Network reports Richard Seymour wants a long-term deal, repeating Rodney Harrison’s claim he was “less than thrilled” at the trade to Oakland.
– The Boston Herald reports what Cable said Monday is correct and that the issue was between Seymour and the Patriots, although it doesn’t specify what those issues could be in a trade already approved by the league.
Seymour currently counts as one of the Raiders 53-man roster.
– Here’s the Bay Area News Group account by Steve Corkran.
– Missed this column Monday from the Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy, which suggests the Raiders are getting something beyond a talented defensive lineman, assuming Seymour reports.
Will check in from Raiders’ facility this afternoon following walkthrough and practice . . .

Al will get the deal done. It is the one thing he has been able to do in the last few years. At least he won’t be able to waste the first round pick on the guy with the best 40 time. Maybe he finally realizes that the game is won in the trenches!
September 8th, 2009 at 7:57 am
Peter King and your moronic haters can kiss our black and silver a$$!!! Al always get his guy. He will be signed to a long term deal and he will start on Monday. Oh Yeah!!!

—Is this supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing?
September 8th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Can’t wait till the depth chart comes out today…Hoping the Seymour thing clears up. I like a starting line of Ellis Bryant, Kelly and Seymour, I think with those three vets in the mix Bryant’s going to become a thing to behold!
As for the running back situation. I think Bush and Dmac can be the next Jacobs and Ward…thoughts.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:12 am
Hmmmmm… I hope he gets here. Seymour is a incredable addition. He really dosent have a choice, Players are property of their NFL Team. Owners make the final decisions and this is a business. If the boss tell you to go..you go. The NFL is a job, the Players an incredable sum of Money, and they have their part to do. And making business decisions isn’t one of them. “Make it happen”

I can’t believe some clown actually thought trading a 1st Round pick for a 30 year old vet who doesn’t want to be here and may not even report was a good idea.
then to lobby for that every year? insane. (post 141 last blog)

even if Seymour signs the contract today and starts working with the team tomorrow, is Wed-Sun enough time to learn what DC Marshall expects from him against the Chargers?

RR
Good dialogue.
I by no means thought Rob R was a very good DC.
I just felt the talent gap on the line was so low relative to NFL standards that no DC would have been very effective. This preseason alone we were still the worst team against the run in the NFL.
Marshall is generally well respected and at least the team has now acknowledged the Dline issues. Good defense starts with solid Dline play.
Here is hoping Seymour shows up soon.

hey BSJ, you think the Garcia release had anything to do with the fact that the Raiders already have a QB/intern pushing JaWalrus?

He could show up an hour before the SD game, start, and play better than any starter on our team now. I don’t see it being an issue at all. It’s the trenches man, just win your battles and “see” the play.
Pay the man Al! Give him a wopping 4 year deal and make this guy a Raider. He’s our 1st round selection in 2011 anyway, show him the money and show him fast. Get’er done!

I think that had to do with the talent level to paycheck ratio. Gradkowski looked as good as Garcia LOL.

If this guy is still the truth we need to do a contract upgrade pronto. He needs to be here for the game on manday. He is going to get at least tommy kelly money…… We cannot lose to the dischargers, if this guy gives us a legitimate chance to get to philip rivers, and bash his head in sending him to the paramedics, I will chnage my skepticism…..

September 8th, 2009 at 8:31 am
RR,
I serve kool-aid anyway, but the Seymour trade tastes great! Just what we needed! And I was content with waiting till the draft to fix that D-line. Not to say it’s the answer to all of the Raiders problems, but it addresses one, if not the biggest problems. Richard will make every player on that line better, and get the ball in the offenses hands more often. Can’t wait to see the impact.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:31 am
In an ideal world we would have drafted better from 2003-2006 and we would have a respectable Dline. Those were perhaps the worst drafts in team history.
We were desperate for Dline help (see Saints game and preseason Dline performance).
This move does not vault us to the playoffs but it does make our defense respectable.
The 2010 draft needs to be a good one to push us into the playoffs and define this team. It should be heavily line focused.
The 2011 draft should not be as important to this team as 2010. I am not big on picking up aging players but we were desperate. Ellis and Seymour make us much better.

QUESTION:
so which is it?
Ellis-Kelly-Seymour-Richardson
or
Ellis-Kelly-Warren-Seymour
either way, I don’t see Trevor Scott in there except for obvious passing downs as a rush DE or possibly subbing for Ricky Brown on a blitz package
does he have the frame to add another 30 lbs without losing that speed? doubtful.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:41 am
don’t you just love the drama…
September 8th, 2009 at 8:42 am
is anybody else concerned that Kirk Morrison got bested by Ricky Brown this offseason and still starts at MLB on Monday Night against the dolts Tomlinson/Sproles?
He may not even be 100 percent!
September 8th, 2009 at 8:43 am
Seymour is better than any other Dline player we have on the roster. Bringing him in is great, even though our Defensive problems are rooted both on talent level and strategy. Do you really think Al is goin to allow Marshall to blitz? nope. during the preseason we saw Al’s favorite play enough to know the D is going to play Al’s brand of D football….Drop that DT into pass coverage again Al, its friggin genius!
September 8th, 2009 at 8:43 am
Both, and mix in some bryant as well…. No more scott to light in th A$$….
September 8th, 2009 at 8:45 am
So the hookers…I mean the Patriots are holding this up because he wants a long-term deal in place first. I guess we will stop listening to Rodney Harrison and trust Tom Cable. He was not lying. Now all you Raider-haters have egg on your face.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:46 am
Seymour should go to Al and say Mr. Davis I will sign but you have to put in the contract that we will blitz X number of times a game…..
September 8th, 2009 at 8:46 am
I don’t see undrafted rookie Bryant stealing any reps from Ellis, Seymour, Shaughnessy or Richardson at DE
Don’t see him stealing any reps from Kelly, Seymour or Warren at DT either
barring injury (of course) or unless they run the ball and control the clock and our D can’t get off the field – even with Seymour
September 8th, 2009 at 8:47 am
Al. Pay the man. You payed MeAngelos 8 mill for 8 pathetic games. You payed the Turd the 1 million roster bonus. You payed Yvonne. You payed DHB…etc. Pay Seymour.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:48 am
The reason they do not blits is because they have to help a poor run defense…
September 8th, 2009 at 8:48 am
Jerry Mac says Al Davis has all the leverage in this trade for Seymour.
Here’s hoping Al Davis cares more about winning than money for once
pay the man!
September 8th, 2009 at 8:50 am
So he asks for a lot of money. gets it, and then settles in and plays like cr@p until they trade him just like Moss.
If he’s only about the money and hates the Raiders he’s never going to play good.
On the other hand, if he wants to be here, he kicks @ss and teaches the other D lineman “proper technique”.

exactly. I hate it when we stack 8 in the box and the other team still runs the ball at will on us with success
September 8th, 2009 at 8:52 am
There are two things the Raiders don’t do defensively: blitz and stop the run….there are two things the Steelers do defensively: blitz and stop the run…draw your own conclusions.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:52 am
Richard Seymour has a reputation for being a nasty/dirty player. that may be just what our defense needs. some toughness & swagger
of course I said the same thing when we drafted Jake Grove. how’d that turn out ???
September 8th, 2009 at 8:52 am
Seymour is in a tough spot.
He’ll play in 09, there’s no question. He can’t afford not to. The Raiders own his rights, and he won’t be a FA next year if he gets placed on the non-football list.
What leverage does he have? Why does he need any? Al’s gonna (over)pay the guy regardless. Hold out and wait for more money? Not happening.
At 29, about to be 30, he can’t lose a year of football. Plus, who will trade for him in 2010? Or, if in the dog house, who would sign him in 2011? Certainly not for the same money Al will throw at him today.
He’s just drying his tears and having his PR person preparing a statement to the effect of “I’m very excited about joining the Raiders. This team has a long history of success and and a rich tradition of yada yada yada…..I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates and discussing football with Mr. Davis…”
The ONLY way Seymour wins, is if the Raiders trade him to someone else for a player or two picks in 2011 or a #1 in 2010, which I think is quite laughable and won’t happen.
Guy will be in Alameda in the next 48 hours.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:53 am
The only good way to pay him is an incentive-laden contract.
You play good=you get paid.
Otherwise, we’ve been burned before, recently.
Don’t just trust this guy.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:53 am
Ellis- Kelly- Bryant- Seymour
I think that Warren is now the worst value on this team
(production relative to salary at $5 mill per year. Warren makes more than Seymour!!!!!!) and he will be used to fill in by the fourth game of the season.
If Seymour gets a big deal I can see us drafting a DT in round one next year and then cut Warren and renegotiate Kelly’s contact.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:55 am
we´ll draft a DT if he runs a 4.30 40. otherwise its CB baby.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:55 am
You think Seymour goes back to New England after being traded? Not mentioned in trade talks, not rumored to be traded, not on the block – traded.
Nope.
Anyone else willing to give a #1 pick?
Possibly.
Reality? Rich gets his sh:t together and plays for the Silver and Black. There are no other realistic options.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:56 am
I can see us drafting a DT in round one next year
***
I got two words for you: Taylor Mays
September 8th, 2009 at 8:57 am
Gotta be an incentive-based contract.
Win/Win scenario.
If he plays okay, big bucks next year.
Make it so he makes more than any of the other D lineman if he reaches his incentives.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:57 am
I can’t believe Al made this trade without an agreement already in place. The last thing this team needs is another D. Burgess cancer in the locker room, hating the fact he came from a championship caliber team to the “siberia” of the NFL. If he’s not happy, this deal is useless!
September 8th, 2009 at 8:58 am
Think Merryman gets suspended before the opener?
NfL’s been tough on these bad guys.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:58 am
why should we care how much Al pays him. It aint our money. Al will prob pay him the best money in the short term in the range of Nnamdi but no Haynesworth long term contract. It’s a done deal he will be starting on Monday.
September 8th, 2009 at 8:59 am
“I can’t believe Al made this trade without an agreement already in place.”…seriously?

September 8th, 2009 at 9:01 am
It’s great to be the hated.
Even better when we’re winning.
September 8th, 2009 at 9:01 am
How do you base a DTs contract on incentives when he is on such a bad team? In Oakland, he may get triple teamed with offenses letting airflow, friction and gravity handle Warren or Kelly. If I was Seymour, I would laugh in our faces if we offered an incentive laden contract.
Since Al made Kelly the highest paid DT last year, Seymour’s agent should be able to double Kelly’s deal….lol
September 8th, 2009 at 9:05 am
Tom Cable should have had this Sandy Eggo game circled on his calender the first day Al Davis announced him Head Coach at the presser
thats how important it is. everybody loves to talk about the last 2 games on the 2008 season. they mean nothing now and even less if we get blown out on the big stage with everybody watching. we’ll continue to carry the laughing stock label
here’s the headline I want to read: Tom Cable punches San Diego in the mouth. Raiders rush for 200 yards, throw for 300
September 8th, 2009 at 9:06 am
If we can sign Seymour to a long-term deal this was a good move…if he is a one year rental and a pissed off franchised player in 2010, this deal could be a disaster.
Al the gambler…at least this time Seymour seems to fit our scheme (unlike D. Hall and Jeff Garcia).
I have to give Al credit on this one though…totally worth the gamble.

I really hope this deal falls apart.
A 1st round pick for an aging DL who’s best days are behind him,who doesn’t really want to be a part of this team, and who will in all likelihood be gone after one season…just another in a long line of bad moves by Al.
September 8th, 2009 at 9:09 am
man, y’all sound like you’ve been sippin’ on sulfur soup. where’s Oaklifer with a dose of Kool-Aid?
Al’s giving it a shot. Stir it up!
September 8th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Los raiders..I know..isn’t this crazy. Once again, it just shows how out of touch Al Davis is with reality. He thinks Seymore can’t wait to become Raider. And how excited he is to come and play for such a fuctional, winning organization.
A deal better get done..or this could be a nasty situation for the next two years. Seymore will say he is hurt and will play about 3 games.
He’ll talk his way out town and we gave away a first Rd pick for nothing. Don’t get me wrong, I could s#%t about the first round pick..its the point that it was wasted on an Al Davis fantasy football fascination
September 8th, 2009 at 9:11 am
Tommy Kelly got a seven-year, $50.5 million contract with $18.125 million in guarantees
Richard Seymour should get a four-year, $32 million contract with $20 million guaranteed
thats fair.

September 8th, 2009 at 9:12 am
Cut everyone but Seymore and give him everyones money. We’d be a better D if it was just 1 against 11 IMO.
September 8th, 2009 at 9:12 am
Triple teamed?
Yeah, right.
If that actually happens. then I guess we’ve got lineman with nobody on them.
If he’s all that he’ll play through the “double-teams”.

September 8th, 2009 at 9:12 am
Not having a deal in place ahead of time is the best position to be in.
Let him earn a good contact with the Raiders like Nam or Lechler.
What he did for the Pats does not help us. It helps Seymour.
If Seymour tanks this year, he will not get a good deal from ANYONE next year.
Mr Davis will not overpay for non Raider production again.
We only have two remaining on the roster from those mistakes. Kelly and Warren.
September 8th, 2009 at 9:13 am

September 8th, 2009 at 9:14 am
Rockstar…..NE probably didn’t want to make this deal a month ago. I am sure they wanted to see Brace and the other young cats perform on the field before they pulled the trigger.
But yeah, a month ago would have been nice…I certainly would not have been as stressed out and we could have avoided all of Florida Pete’s “but who is going to stop the run” comments!
September 8th, 2009 at 9:14 am
If the deal falls through with Seymour, do we get our first round pick back?
September 8th, 2009 at 9:16 am
Al Davis: Richard, this is Al. Welcome to “Just Win Baby!”
Seymour: That was 6 yrs ago. I’m not coming.
AD: Richard, let me explain the Collective Bargaining Agreement. We own your contract. If you do not report, we can start subtracting $234,375 per game check.
RS: No big deal, I’ll play next year.
AD: Then your contract restarts next year.
RS: Then I’ll report and play out my contract.
AD: Does’t work that way, I’ll franchise you, ask NNamdi.
RS: What time Wednesday do you want me there?
AD: For practice and afterwords we’ll deal with your extention.
RS: WHAT THE F**K!

a dose of positivism.
September 8th, 2009 at 9:22 am
This is a good move if Seymour’s on board, which doesn’t appear so now, but like I said, the guy’s a pro.
He will get a MONSTER contract offer before he boards the plane. Forget incentives. His agent has looked at contracts for Warren and Kelly, Sands probably doesn’t apply anymore or else that would help Seymour’s case more. And Alisgod has a point. It’s all monoploy money. Who cares what Al pays him, its not our money. As long as we get production, which we should and will, doesn’t matter with the right player if he’s a fit in the system.
This deal helps the Raiders a great deal short term. I remember when getting 30 year old Pro Bowlers meant we could put another notch in our belt as reinventing players’ careers in Oakland and giving them a chance to make something out of nothing.
As soon as Seymour starts listening to former Raiders not named Walter, Burgess, or Sapp, he’ll be just fine with his new team.
If the deal takes longer and he can’t make it for the opener, oh well. We were going to be without him anyway. Let’s have him ready for the Chiefs if it means getting this done right.
My guess? He makes it in time for Thursday practice at the Coliseum and plays Monday.
September 8th, 2009 at 9:24 am
Over my head or just too silly to be worth commenting on?
Funny though.
I agree they are kinda smelly.
Better to stay somewhat optimistic for now.
We’ll know soon enough.
Anything would be an improvement over last year’s D line.
September 8th, 2009 at 9:25 am
How much would Seymour make if he earned as much as Kelly, Warren & Sands combined?
thats the type of contract his agent will lobby for…
September 8th, 2009 at 9:27 am
When we picked up Alzado, we had Long and Townsend up front along with Bill Pickel and Reggie Kindlaw. Ted Hendricks, Rod Martin, Matt Millen and Jack Squirek at LB. Hard to compare today’s group in the Richard Seymour trade.
September 8th, 2009 at 9:27 am
Might have been too silly…I tend to do that sometimes…
new post up
September 8th, 2009 at 9:27 am
I am not in favor of a long term extension yet for Seymour. It will be too easy for Big Sey to succomb to Terdell syndrome and sleepwalk through more disappointing seasons.
Al should franchise Seymour for 2009 – which bumps his salary considerably – and tell him his long term contract depends on this year’s production.
September 8th, 2009 at 9:31 am
If the D improves a little and the O improves a lot Raiders win more than last year.
Despite idiotic mistakes, the offense still performed brilliantly, at times last year.
Many 4th quarter leads were blown by the Swiss cheese D.
most games they lost by a little.
Everybody knew last yr all you had to do was stay close and the Raiders D would lay down and let you win.
ryan was a moron.
Acting all cocky with the worst D in the league.
Hated that guy.
Like I said, anything is an improvement.
O will play well.
September 8th, 2009 at 9:32 am
With regards to Merriman, the guy will play Monday. Goodell won’t suspend him unitl he’s pleaded or found guilty, which could take months. Nor should he be.
I know we all dislike the guy, but it’s wrong for anyone to be suspended before conviction or admission of guilt. I believe the Commish’s track record thus far will support this statement.
Oh, and if Seymour doesn’t show up for a physical, deal gets reworked or dumped entirely, in which case, Seymour has to be traded again. We look bad, New England and Seymour look worse.
September 8th, 2009 at 9:33 am
We will not make the over pay mistake again.
We do not have to.
We might be able to work out a longterm deal now but what if we don’t?
We keep our draft pick and Seymore plays for the PATS?
Unlikely.
Seymour retires?
He is much worse off.
He sulks and plays poorly for the Raiders?
That cost Moss alot of money and he still has not won a championship.
The Raiders have said play well for us and you will be paid well. Our incentive is that it cost us a number one pick. His incentive is a long term deal he could not get with the Pats.
Bottom line is we can pay Seymour “Warren like money” next year since we will cut Warren next year.
Kelly will get renegotiated down ala Walker or he will get cut as well.

Charlie,
If he doesn’t get a contract from the Raiders..he might not play at all. He’ll claim he is hurt, while everyone knows its B.S.
He’ll be fresh for 2010 and teams will be falling over themselves to get a deal done.

If Merrymann plays, he’ll be crazy ’cause he pyssed.
And I agree, he seems like he’s full of roids.
How else do you explain his lack of aging?
Coaches should take advantage of his aggressivness with screens and draws.

Of course he isn’t thrilled about being traded. This is a 3 time world champion and is comfortable in NE. He is going to the other side of the US and has to relocate his whole life. Why wouldn’t he want a mega deal? At this point in his career you would think he would make Oakland his last team. If this turns out to be a 1 year and done in Oakland I’m going to be real sick….

Funny how when they put radios in the D captains’ helmet and got rid of signals, Pats aren’t doing so hot.
Not that they were total cheaters or anything.

Angel
At thirty and being out of football for a year, Seymour will not be staring at lucrative offers. His failing to report will make many question his desire to play.
Sitting out a contract year is the worst thing he could do.
Seymour’s best strategy is to come to Oakland and play well.
It is his contract year just like it would have been in NE. Mr Davis knew this which is why we would not try to get a deal done ahead of time.
Mr Davis has always taken care of his players to a fault and he wants his players to be happy. Mr Davis is also sick of poor performance after signing lucrative deals.
The Raiders hold the cards on this one and all we are asking is for good performance in a Raider uniform.
Perhaps we can get a fair deal done ahead of time but I do not see that in the best interest of the Raiders.

Well if Tommy Kelly is worth 50 million then whats Richard Seymour worth? 200?

I would prefer Seymour to play without a new contract this year and see what he does for us (maybe, and just maybe he has the D-Hall, Moss, Sapp, Gibril sindrome and he sucks)
If he plays well we try to extend him and he doesn’t want an extenion, franchise him like we did with Aso and Wooson.

Let’ all take a fall/winter snooze & wake up when the Lakers repeat as NBA champs & we can snooze through all of the Bay area sports teams including collge!!
Thanks

Screw that, no franchise tag would be a bad deal for the Raiders. Seymour has no leverage here.
If he sours this deal its just bad business for everyone involved. He won’t be happy. Patriots won’t be happy. And the Raiders, well the Raiders walk away less competitive.
They’ll probably force the issue. To the Patriots its a done deal.
^^^^^^^Exactly!
Seymour needs to play hard to get the contract extension he wants…..period!
The Raiders then can negotiate with him as the season goes on, and if he doesn’t want to sign with them long term, the Raiders still have the cards….they can Franchise him….or Non Exclusive Tag him, where if someone makes him an offer and the Raiders don’t match, they get two 1st Round Picks I believe.

“He could show up an hour before the SD game, start, and play better than any starter on our team now.”

You got that right!

Obviously……..
Raiders with Joseph and a 2011 1st rounder…
Raiders without Joseph and 2011 1st rounder + Seymour are better.
Don’t even get me started on how much money we save on whatever Seymour signs for compared to what a 1st rounder gets paid (never mind he would only be the DB with the fastest time or a DE or something that would make a great something else) plus we get a player who contributes immediately for 2 years plus development time for the draft pick.
No Brainer!!! Great move Al!! Rot in Hades MR! (dude, richochet, et al)

this server still sucks…Jerry, you can say nothing about Al Davis’s organization until your own does something about this 32nd ranked server!
