Raiders off-day notes
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, September 9th, 2009 at 5:12 pm in Oakland Raiders.
If the Raiders and Richard Seymour were moving closer to joining forces Wednesday both sides were doing a good job staying silent about it.
There was no media availability for the Raiders, and in New England coach Bill Belichick dodged any questions that had to do with Seymour.
Ideally, Seymour would be practicing with the team on Thursday, giving him a better chance of having an impact on the opener against Raiders nemesis LaDainian Tomlinson and the San Diego Chargers. The fact that the Raiders practice at night Thursday at the Coliseum gives him a little extra time.
The only on-the-record sources in the story remain Raiders coach Tom Cable, who said he spoke to Seymour and that Seymour wants to join the Raiders after he resolves issues with the Patriots; Belichick, who said the rights to Seymour belong to the Raiders, and NBC analyst Rodney Harrison, who said his friend “wasn’t thrilled” to be traded to Oakland and gave his own opinions on the instability of the Raiders organization.
Neither Seymour, his agent Eugene Parker, nor anyone with the Raiders has been specific about the issues keeping him away or if the deal can be voided if Seymour doesn’t report, take a physical, and complete the transaction.
A few more off-day notes:
– Can Tom Cable win in Oakland? Here’s a link to the story I wrote for today’s Bay Area Newsgroup papers with the thoughts of Jon Gruden, Tom Flores and John Madden on the subject.
– Also running in print today _ Steve Corkran’s 2009 season outlook.
– According to ballots from a 106 member panel rating the top 100 players in the NFL for The Sporting News, the Raiders had two of the top 100 _ cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha at No. 20 and Seymour at No 97.
Among those with ties to the Raiders on the panel included Eric Allen, Rich Gannon, Ted Hendricks, Lincoln Kennedy, Daryle Lamonica, Rod Martin and Keith Millard.
– There has been no official word on Raiders ticket sales for the season opener. The club can request to have the deadline extended to Saturday at 7:15 p.m. if necessary because of the Labor Day holiday.

September 9th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
Who’s starting on Monday night regarding the running backs?
September 9th, 2009 at 5:17 pm
I read this earlier in your tweet Jerry How bout something new.

Who doesn’t hate us
September 9th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
Harrison was Charger. Of course he hates us…
September 9th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
If Seymour is not in Alameda in time for tomorrow evenings practice, cut bait on the deal…..
September 9th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Trade him to Miami so the pats can see him twice a year.
September 9th, 2009 at 5:22 pm
Cable is supposed to name the starting RB on Thursday. I think it will be McFadden to start with a lot of Bush so McFadden can move into the slot…
I bet we see DHB run a reverse. Looked for it in preseason but never saw him run it.
Also hope that the Raiders remember that LT likes roll to his right and throw that little option pass down near the goal line. We have been burned on that play more than once… Howard has to be ready.
September 9th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
I was also waiting to see DHB run some form of an end around in the pre season . Hop[e we see it on Monday.
September 9th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
Is it possible that ne owes him a roster bonus? He technically made the final 53 the day before he was traded. Which means ne would owe him, not Oakland. If that’s the case, by reporting to Oakland and finalizing the deal he would forfeit the bonus. If this is true, the NFL would probably have to step in.
September 9th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
You see that Kell – Basically Flores, Madden, and Gruden (to an extent) agree with me on my prior comments.
It can be done if you know how to do it. And thats the bottom line.
September 9th, 2009 at 5:31 pm
I’ll read it in a moment. Listening to speech
September 9th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
Seymour is really pissing me off..He needs to get over the fact that his beloved team no longer wants him around and get to Oakland already!
September 9th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
You guys don’t even know what is happening with the Seymour situation. For all you know, he is scheduled to be at practice tomorrow and they will announce the deal then.
Give the guy a break and see what happens.
I for one am excited that we finally have a respectable D line.
September 9th, 2009 at 5:36 pm
Did I shave my legs for this?
September 9th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Seymour is still packing up all the video tapes to bring to Oakland.
September 9th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Someone needs to start a rumor that the raiders are trading Nnamdi for a future 1st round draft pick. Just to see what espn will say.
September 9th, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Regardless of how this turns out. The big victory here “hopefully” is the Raiders realization that you can’t underinvest in the lines.
I wish they had this realization earlier….like in April…but better late than never.
Jay Richardson, Matt Shaughnessy and Trevor Scott better keep working and they have to know that the team is not entirely pleased with their play to date.

Shoot I wouldn’t mind seeing him get a couple of receiver screens also. With dhb’s speed there is so much you can do.
September 9th, 2009 at 6:15 pm
I think you’ll see those things as soon as week 1. One thing about Cable he isnt afraid to use some trick plays. Of course the Seabass fake kick was forgettable..

Once again, there is no debate that the health care system in this country is completely broken. Every other prosperous democracy on earth has a socialized system but us. No one seems to have a problem with it, but the ignorant mouth pieces of the insurance and pharmaceutical industries. I wonder why that is?
September 9th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
If Seymour doesn’t report and goes back to NE Goodell should suspend him for X games. I’m sorry but what he is doing is selfish and disrespectful to us fans. Goodell should make a statement and stop a BS trend from starting.

Ronald Curry got cut from the 1st & 2nd worst NFL teams

I appreciate all Jerry’s reporting, but man he’s really been mailing it in of late. Just got home, hoping for something, and nothing but a few links.
This Seymour situation should be a huge story. If he doesn’t show-up Thursday, what do the Raiders do? The unions might start getting involved and it could be a huge mess, and a huge distraction for the team.
Give me your opinion of what’s going happen Jerr-ah!!!
September 9th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
The Raiders better make sure Seymour passes the physical before he signs that new contract. Do the negotiating and agree first but do that physical very shortly after because you don’t want the guy to sign with any injury concerns.

As long as there’s a Constitution and a system of checks and balances this country will always slap the Be’Jesus out of others who try to change the foundation of our government. It’s not perfect, but it’s by far the closest thing to perfect man has ever achieved.
On that note, let us all, not matter for what side of the isle we stand come together Monday night, not as Democrat or Republican, Conservative or Liberal, black or white but silver and black, as one nation, under a groove, getting down, just for the funk of it, one nation, on the move, nothing can stop us now!

Out of all the questionable signings last year. Two really bugged.
(1) The one that bugged me the most was the D. HAll. Shouldnt these coaches who watch mountains of tape on people KNOW that D.HAll was not a coverage corner.
(2) Who is the frickin Doctor that approved Javon Walker’s physical. Plz tell me that that Doc has been dismissed.

An important note about the 2011 draft pick that has not really been discussed. National media seem to be obsessed about the fact that we gave our 1st round pick in a year which could potentially have a hard salary cap for rookies. What no one seems to be thinking about is that if that is true, then every junior worth a damn will go into the draft next year. 2011 will be a comparatively weak draft compared to 2010. It could even lead to juniors who would be drafted high in 2011 to stay another year in college.

Damnit! When I leave, I’m supposed to come back and find out that Seymour has signed and been delivered. This isn’t working out very well.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:41 pm
Its sad that getting a guy like Seymour can end up being so unsatisfying. We’re supposed to be happy and more confident in beating the Chargers but thats not the case and it never feels like we can get that type of feeling. This team dwells in doubt and uncertainty 24/7.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:42 pm
Ricochet is obviously ‘bothered’ by the Raiders and/or their fans or he wouldn’t feel the need to come here everyday and spew insults. That is the sign of someone who is ‘bothered’.
And the fact that you are just a “bad guy”.
A person who spews all that “hate” (and don’t say it’s pity, cuz a person who pities someone or something doesn’t try to make them feel worse), unless of course they are twisted, mean spirited jerk like you.

Honestly?
Who thinks that being a Raider is that big of a deal to any player? I could see if the player was completely a non-fit into a system i.e. Warren Sapp playing 3-4 end. But Seymour can play any spot along the line and we have no intention of putting his 310lb body at OLB.
A quote from Tom Cable: ” We all have good players and we all pay them a lot of money, and we all have good coaches who get paid a lot of money to coach”
It should not matter if we were the 0-16 Raiders in 2008. Seymour should be looking at doing his job period. If he is not happy to be playing professional football and getting paid handsomely to do it then I say call the trade off.
However, Cable has said he spoke to Seymour and the guy wants to be a Raider. Rodney Harrison’s comment is just that of every other analyst who has a makeshift vision of the Raiders. It is a what have you done for me lately league and we have not done sh!t so it is only reasonable for us to be hated on.
My personal opinion: Belicheat is refusing to speak on the matter because Cable said that NE has issues to iron out with Seymour. Well wouldn’t it just be smart of New England to take their sweet time to iron out the issues and have Seymour show up to us late and unprepared to play in the season opener. Yea that does not make the best of sense to me but it is one of many plausible scenarios that could be right now. No one has a clue but I really do not think being a Raider is the issue why Seymour is not here.
Just my 2 cents.
September 9th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Like Al got Rice, Moss, Sapp.. It’s every players life long dream to be a Raider. So don’t worry Nation if Big Al want’s him he will be delivered just like the rest.. He may come in crying but he will be there holding a Black and Silver Jersey proclaiming how happy he is to be there..
September 9th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
Like Al Davis got Dennis Green.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
all right since i got deleted by trying to be funny, i’ll throw out my Richard Seymour theory.
1. Google Richard Seymour wife and see what kinda legal trouble Tanya Seymour is in.
2. If his wife approves of the move there is no way she is letting him come out here alone while she takes care of the kids and sells the house.
3. Seymour will be in Oakland with his wife for a press conference. That’s gonna take a couple of days.
4. It probably didn’t help that G. Ellis called out the younger players for going out before the Saints preseason game. I’m sure thats the environment Ms. Seymour wants for her stable marriage.
there Jerry your subject for Thru. ………. your welcome.

The media wants us to believe that it’s imperative for Seymour to get to Oakland ASAP! But the truth be told he can arrive Monday morning in a 3pc suite wearing gators and he will still play. His job is to attack the person holding the ball.. That’s it and that’s all… Not to mention he has been in camp the entire time, besides what can we possibly teach him?
September 9th, 2009 at 10:26 pm
LMN, don’t be dissing Melanie.
That Danish girl is pretty hot though.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
HatersBGone, my point was that Al doesn’t “always get his man”, obviously. What a delusional outlook. He’s offered some big paychecks to players before with them saying no thanks.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
Trade Seymour & another late 2010 pick for Wilfork!!!
We don’t need Seymour as much as we need Wifork.
Put D Bryant & Ellis at Ends, TK and Wilfork at DTs, and bring Scott in passing Downs instead of Bryant!!!! IMHO
September 9th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
DT42, this whole family excuse…I don’t buy it. Most NFL football players haven’t been “home” since high school. They went away for college, then moved again when getting drafted. Having to up and move is a reality for everyone in professional sports. Just like I never bought that Gruden wanted to leave Oakland to be with his family. He wanted to leave to get away from Al Davis.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
I would like to see LT run at that Dline!!!
September 9th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
And Seymour is avoiding playing for Al Davis ^^^. Some veterans don’t mind coming here for the paycheck and the siesta, but evidently Seymour isn’t one of them.
September 9th, 2009 at 10:55 pm
I worry about that Mon game!! We can’t stop the run, we can’t get Seymour fast enough to start, and they know that! They will try to run it with LT, and use HB screens with Sp!!!

I wonder if Seymour’s wife can’t leave the state?
September 9th, 2009 at 11:33 pm
MaddenRaider
i wouldn’t buy it either but it sounds like his wife is crazy. just saying odds are when he gets here its with a long term contract and family in tow. And i couldn’t find out if her legal issues are resolved. That and throw in Eugene Parker’s negotiating style and it might take a while. If not then we just pull the trade and its the Pats problem. I don’t buy the whole won’t play for this team or won’t play for that team. Players are ego driven. If Seymour was successful in NE then he will be just fine in Oakland. NE went from 5-11 to 11-5 in the 00-01 season. that was about the time that he showed up.

Looking at the Raiders depth chart, we could be potentially hurting Monday night at DT. With Seymour still not reporting, and the team cutting Joseph to make room for Seymour, our only backup is undrafted rookie Desmond Bryant.
September 10th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
Seymour is very damaged goods. Bad knees hurt when he played fullback in a few games.
Belichick didn’t even put him on the 45 man roster at times last year. His co-players stripped him of his defensive captain role.
Enjoy him for 16 games — at most. Thanks for the draft pick. The Raiders are the worst run team in sports. They are the Village Retard of the NFL.
September 10th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
There are no legal issues to be ironed out in NE by the way.
