Joseph returns

The Raiders re-signed defensive tackle William Joseph, protecting themselves against the probability of Richard Seymour not joining the team before the season opener Monday night against the San Diego Chargers.

Will have more from the open locker room session as well as a post-practice update from coach Tom Cable, who isn’t scheduled to meet the media until 9:15 p.m. or later.

    Per PFT….

    Raiders send Seymour letter
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 10, 2009 7:56 PM ET
According to Greg Papa, the voice of the Raiders, Oakland’s position on the muddled Richard Seymour matter is crystal clear: they want him.

To help get him, Papa reports that the Raiders have sent Seymour a letter “saying he had five days upon receipt to report to the Raiders and take a physical.”

It’s unclear when the Raiders sent the letter or what will happen if Seymour continues to fail to show up in Oakland. If the five days elapse, Oakland would have the right to place him on the roster/suspended.

In that scenario, the Raiders would retain his rights in 2010 at his 2009 salary, but he would miss the entire season.

Absolutely no one wants that to happen, so the nuclear option seems unlikely. Then again, there don’t seem to be any “compromise” alternatives. Seymour either has to show up or the Raiders won’t have much choice.

The letter does indicate, though, that Oakland is not interested in trying to get their first-round pick back. They want Seymour, even though the conditions of the trade require Seymour to report.

Perhaps that’s why the Patriots are so confident that the issue “is between [Seymour] and Oakland.”

The clock is ticking. Your move, Richard.

Watching the Steelers and Titans play defense against the run makes me wonder if the Raiders have ever considered that tactic.

Well, that pretty much does it.

AGain, I give Davis credit for trying. As for the run defense…those guys have to get some freekn pride man!

Seymour will not miss a game check…imo.

There’s an old saying about the tail wagging the dog.

If Al sent the 5 day letter, it is to demonstrate that Seymour has no leverage contractually.

If He shows up He gets paid, if not He gets shelved for the season and loses 3.7 mil.

That is a pretty big gun held to one’s head.

The problem in all of this is that, imo, Al still believes that everyone wants to play for the Raiders.

At one time that may have been true, but again, imo no longer.

  • Chris in NY

Good to see Joseph back. Not that he’s done much to get excited about in the past, but he was a beast in the preseason. Granted, it was against 2nd and 3rd stringers, but I’ll take a positive sign about our front 7 when I can get it.

  • CRACKRAIDER

The Oakland Raiders have signed former University of Wisconsin wide receiver Paul Hubbard to the practice squad. The Raiders tried out Hubbard today as well as former Arkansas defensive back Jamar Love. Hubbard was drafted in the sixth round last year by the Cleveland Browns and spent time on their practice squad. He’s a big, physical wideout at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds

Raiders signed WR Paul Hubbard to the practice squad.
A sixth-round pick by the Browns last season, Hubbard is an exceptional athlete but incredibly raw. Al Davis just had to have him.

    Kell

Let’s hope so. The same old jabs are becoming tiresome.

  • Thec07

Wonder if the players will use all this negative press as motivation. Everybody is dumping o them left and right. How they come out on monday will prove how much heart they have individually, and collectively…

  • SnB offense defense specialteams

    KoolKell,

The offense will have to save the day.

I fear that San Diego is going to get its point.

Trevor Scott is too light….and Richardson give limited pass rush…the scheme is the same

The offense has to be the spark. Be nice to score 1st. Even if just a field goal

  • Thec07

first game lst year we were up by 15, dischargers score 25 points in the forth qtr….

O needs to put up more points in the red zone……
    D needs to man up…

Yeah, the defense just has to play with pride. Their weakness is at the center of this Seymour drama.

I really am disappointed about how this Seymour thing is working out.

William Joseph is just another guy. Notice how he was still available

  • http://CableBumaye 909RaiderLifer

    Later, dinner time…

  • Biz Markie

well seymour is available too, just not to the raiders. oh snap.

  • Thec07

    SnB offense defense specialteams,

If they play with pride they will take all of this negative stuff and turn it into more energy to smash the chargers…..

  • Kirk

The Chargers scored in the fourth quarter because we stopped blitzing.

  • Biz Markie

the chargers won that game because the raiders dont play for 4 quarters. oh snap.

  • RaiderLen

Hey Markie, If Seymour doesn’t show up his pay check is gonna be the middle of a doughnut.

It’s His move. Show up, get paid. No show, get shelved, no pay.

    Pretty simple.

  • Chris in NY

All I’m saying is if Seymour isn’t in the fold by Monday Shaughnessy or even Richardson should start over Scott as the base DE. Scott may show some flash as a pass-rush specialist in the short-term and may even develop into a solid 3-down DE in the long-term, but I have no trust in him to help stop the run right now.

  • RaiderLen

    Chris in NY…

Agreed about Scott as a RDE.

Situatioal rusher is all He is for now.

  • Biz Markie

len it is simple, he would rather not get a check then be a raider,..havent you been followin this stuff this week?…its been 5 days since trade,…he doesnt want to be here and I dont blame him …oh snap.

  • RaiderLen

    *situational

  • Thec07

Scott too light in the tail to play RDE

  • RaidingTexas

I know he’s being condemned for this, but I think that Al left the language “upon passing a physical” out of the contract on purpose. Seymour has no options now. He can’t go back to NE. He is Oakland Raider property now.

The guy is apparently greedy. He doesn’t want to miss a full year (or even two full years) of pay out of stubbornness. He’ll never play anywhere again if he sits out 2009 and 2010.

Seymour will accept the reality, and I figure he’ll do it fairly soon. It just doesn’t look like it will happen in time to help the Raiders stop LT.

  • Ryan

    Gage was gone.

  • RaiderLen

Markie, You’re right, He dosen’t want 3.7 mil.

I’m pretty sure Al didn’t mail the LETTER on Sunday.

    So…We’ll see.

  • Biz Markie

len you are one of the diehards that will not believe that players dont want to play here…newsflash oh snap!!!…i hope seymour sits out all year and we lose draft pick!!!…that would be awesome!!! oh snap.

  • Ryan

But it’s official. Seymour is a Raider. And there is still nothing New England can do about it.

Officially, welcome to the Raider Nation, Richard Seymour.

You are now one of my 54 most favorite professional football players.

Mabey a year or 2 from now He can handle it, but as of now, no way.

  • raiderkoolaid

If a team asked the team who holds the rights to a player for permission to talk to that player to see if a deal could be done, and received that permission, then it wouldn’t be tampering.

Someone said there was no room for compromise between Seymour and The Raiders, but I would like to propose a compromise. What if the Raiders did not agree not to franchise Seymour, but they did agree that if they could not come to a contract agreement with him after the season was over then they would agree to trade him, but they would have to get at least a top twenty first round pick for him, or else a 21-32 first round pick with a lower draft pick thrown in. It would be good for Seymour to know that he wouldn’t have to be stuck in Oakland if he wanted to leave after the season, and would also give the Raiders the chance to prove to him that this wouldn’t be such a bad place for him to be, and also give the Raiders some protection on the value of the draft pick the gave up for him. They could also give Seymour permission to seek a deal with the team of his choice after the season if it were to come to that.
