Quick update

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, September 11th, 2009 at 3:05 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Late arrival to Alameda today. Some quick hit notes . . .

– The Boston Herald has reported Richard Seymour has recieved a letter from the Raiders giving him five days to report, citing a friend of Seymour’s who said the notification was hand-delivered.

To be clear, the letter is not a ticking clock. It does allow the Raiders to put Seymour on a reserved/left squad which could start his contract all over next year _ still as property of the Raiders _ but he isn’t automatically put on it after five days.

Starting to remind me of the JaMarcus Russell holdout, where he finally joined the team after the first game of the season.

Coach Tom Cable said he knows nothing about the letter and is focused on the Chargers.

– An 24-hour extension was received for Monday night’s game against San Diego. Hard to believe they won’t sell it out, but apparently it’s no slam dunk.

– Running back Justin Fargas missed practice again with a hamstring injury, making it more likely he would miss the opener with Darren McFadden and Michael Bush getting the work.

– Kickoff return specialist Nick Miller missed practice with shin splints for the second straight day. The backup kickoff returner is Johnnie Lee Higgins.

– Johnnie Holland has moved from wide receiver to cornerback on the practice squad following the addition of Paul Hubbard. Holland played corner in high school and college.

More to come later . . .

I just do not understand this situation. I cannot wait until the facts come out. I just do not see this as being a “because he does not wanna play for the Raiders” scenario

    Better late than never

  3. Terrapin Says:

This Seymour issue needs to be resolved asap. I believe they are working out a deal. Of course the Raiders need him in now and want him in even before a deal in struck.

In all my years following the Raiders I have only known it to be this quiet (club, player, agent) when a deal is being negotiated. I don’t know why but instead of saying that out front the organization prefers absolute silence. Maybe so they can deny something – who knows?

TScott manning the edge on all downs is problematic to say the least.

  4. TVs Anson Williams Says:

Seymour’s playing hardball with the wrong owner. I hope he’s prepared to retire. If he is, more power to him.

  5. Dakota Says:

Don’t most teams ask permission to discuss the possibility of an extension with a player that only has one year left on his contract before they trade for that player to prevent situations like this?

  6. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

    #5 “DING DING” good answer!

  7. Terrapin Says:

This is no Seymour won’t report because he doesn’t want to play for the Raiders issue imho. If it were, he and his agent would’ve been outspoken. Take T.O., Brandon Marshall, Jay Cutler or whomever wanted to be OUT. They sure weren’t silent about it.

  8. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

Jerry is late because the Raiders have already put him on the reserved/left squad.

  9. RaiderRobG Says:

Damn call up Peppers already and see if we can’t make a trade for Grady as well.

BTW, is there an option to trade Seymour to someone else, like Miami, Buffalo or the Jets?

  10. raidertay Says:

I wonder what type of credibility Seymore will have in the locker room with his teammates after this fiasco.

Al has made it clear. Its not a matter of ‘if’ its a matter of ‘when’ he reports.

Thats the issue he must have already told us that he is NOT reporting because hs still has a few days to report.

The fact that he has a couple days and we already put him on the list means there was commubnication between parties and he is NOT coming

put richardson out there, didn’t the coaches see scott can’t stop the run. WHAT THE HELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. Terrapin Says:

Seymour’s credibility will not be a problem – He will be judged by what product he puts on the field. They players still want him here because they no he brings a lot to the table.

I’ll go ahead and try to forget this trade ever happened. i had a feeling something like this was going to happen. cable is saying all the wrong things with seymour wants to be a raider. YEAH SURE.

  31. Terrapin Says:

Mike Lombardi? That uninformed tool? Please.

  32. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

We need one more update Jerry

  33. Terrapin Says:

OK. From the lango on that link …sounds like they can take him off at-will and only did it to get Joseph back in to be prepared for Monday.

Still, there’s been so much misinformation going on that I’ll take that with a grain of salt.

  34. kb81 Says:

Never mind the Lombardi ‘news’ Now NFL Net. says someone else ‘broke’ the story and even though he’s on the ‘left team’ list he has five days to come back. Somebody’s confused – me.

  35. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

It still could be a negotiating technique between his agent and Al Davis.

All of the Cheatriots fans that were blogging about him in PFT said how he was all about the money.

I am trying real hard to find a positive in this but its not working!

This is why its always better to draft your own talent and develop them in your system.

I still applaud Davis for trying though.

Still wish that they drafted Ron Brace seeing how he probably made Seymour expendable…..

If I am Trevor Scott, Jay Richardson and Matt Shaughnessy…I am using this as my wake up call and a hit to my pride. The team needs them to step up their games and play the freekn run.

Otherwise, Monday will be more of the same

Mike Lombardi on NFL Network says he’s “on the list.” Hope he doesn’t need the 3.7 mil he just flushed.
    _________________________

Lombardi doesn’t know jack squat about what is happening with the Raiders.

We probably just got permission from the NFL to put Seymour on the list because we signed Joseph, and if we come to an agreement with Seymour in the next few days, I am sure he will be allowed on the 53 man roster.

Now, if the 5 days pass, and the Raiders then place him on the IR list, then this becomes the Richard Seymour debacle and someone in the Raiders organization should do us all a favor and jump off a cliff.

  40. Terrapin Says:

OK THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT DIFFERENT LIST …

PFT reference the “reserve/left squad” list which prevents the player from playing in 2009

National Football Post is referencing the “exempt/left squad” list which I guess does not ..but allowed them to fill the spot with Joseph.

  41. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

No point in trying to put whipped cream and a cherry on top of this pile of poo.

Al tried and unfortunately Seymour is acting unprofessionally. I really hope this isn’t a contract issue though. Davis should have realized the guy would want a new contract. Just give him the money and move on.

Next year…please use a 1st day pick on the D-Line!

  44. LA to TheBay Says:

If it boils down to Seymour doesn’t want to play for us, Al can effectively ruin his career if he’s gangsta/crazy enough.

It will cost a fortune to pay a player franchise tag money not to play, but it’s not as if Davis never payed anyone big bucks to not play before.

If Seymour sits 09, he’ll be back in 2010 at 31 with the same contract. Al pays 3.7 mil. He sits.

2011, Al tags him, pays him 20 mil, Seymour sits. He’s 32.

2012, Al tags him again, pays him 24 mil, Seymour sits. He’s 33. Career over.

How could it possibly be that he doesn’t want to play for us? Despite what the haters say, we’re not that bad. Actually, with him on the roster, we’re a .500 team, IMO.

The guy would miss out on 3.7 mil AT LEAST. Al would probably strike a deal that would give him 30.

And he has yet to say a word.

I don’t want this joker on my team and I sincerely hope I eat my words and he proves me wrong, ’cause this is a mess.

  45. texas steve Says:

if cable isn’t full of crap and seymour wants to be a raider, they should be workin on a long term deal. his agent prob told him not to report and try to sucker al davis for more cash

  47. RaiderRobG Says:

Okay I’m losing it. I tried to ignore the big white elephant in the room, but that’s not the problem, it’s the whole damn circus. The best thing that could happen at this point is Cable getting suspended and Al bringing Gruden in as the “Interim” head coach.

That’s about the only thing that would make me feel better at this point.

  48. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

“Seymour has to report by Tuesday or he can placed on the reserve/left squad list, which means he could play this season. The Raiders do not have to put him on the list in five days, but they have the option to do so at any point after that.”

  50. Dakota Says:

Thanks Terp, just as I thought….not quite time to go into full on panic mode, but we are getting closer…

  53. Lynn from Snot Says:

  63. dt_raiders Says:

The reason the Raiders did not send the letter to Seymour sooner was probably that they were trying to work with Seymour to sign him to a longer deal. Seymour’s agent, Parker, however probably asked for too much. I wouldn’t be surprised if Parker asks for the biggest deal ever for a DE. They exchanged numbers until the talk broke down. The Raiders retaliated by sending Seymour this letter as a negotiating leverage tool. I wouldn’t be surprised that both sides are still trading numbers but I don’t see any leveraging options for Seymour. He eventually would have to report or retire. Al has been known to spend big, I don’t know why both sides can’t come up with an agreement.

Better would be for our players to play to their contracts.

Better would be for our top draft picks to play to their contracts

BEtter would be for the defense to stop getting pushed around and manhandled and start playing with some intensity and strength.

Al Davis overinvested in speedy guys that get overpowered too much.

These players have to step it up big time. Seymour or not!!!!

  74. jhill Says:

    Anyway …

More important that the Seymour issue HAS to be Cable’s play calling. What a big sigh of relief to know that McFadden will get the bulk of the work over Fargas. But it certainly won’t matter if we see that same I formation running to the right on 1st down, up the middle on 2nd down, and a 3rd down pass to Miller.

Mix in the reliable drive killing penalty by Carlisle, Green, or both, and Seymour becomes an after thought in my mind.

You’re absolutely right. What I suggested is utter nonsense from a jaded follower of the Silver & Black, and obviously a premature knee-jerk response.

And Al should have made sure this was a done deal before it was a done deal.

You have an excellent point regarding Ron Brace or a similar player. Breed them. Select them in the draft.

Seymour is spoiled. Look who he played for.

Somewhere the Patriots are laughing histarically as is the rest of the world. Again.

This can be salvaged, but what a distraction. I don’t want Seymour. Again, I will toss in a disclaimer: if he comes and play like a professional, I will happily eat my words, but he’s shown nothing thus far to indicate that. Quite the opposite.

How ’bout at least a statement?

To me what’s disappointing is that it APPEARS that Davis didn’t do his homework on this.

Hopefully a deal is being worked out as we speak.

But Davis really should have had some of these risks resolved before sending over the pick.

Also, this should serve as a wake up call to Mr. Davis. The team is not well-regarded or respected by the public at large. This is a result of the poor performance and front office chaos of late.

Hopefully this will spur him to change.

I’m talking REAL DIRTY! So it starts out 14-0 and we’ve crippled the offense by half-time. I’m not concerned about being able to scor points. I think our offense CAN score LOTS of points. Problem is, we have to get the damn O on the field. Our defense is only good at keeping the opposing teams offense on the field.

80 yard drives eat up alot of clock. Our D is good at burning the clock up for our O. Cripple their offense any way you can. Even if it’s illegal.

I don’t think what we saw in the preseason is ANYTHING like what our offense will look like in regular season. Last 2 games of last season is what we will be doing. Run run run run, pass pass, run run run, pass pass, run, PA PA PA PA, run run run, PA PA, pass pass pass, run run run run run run run run run run run run WIN.

  93. Larz Says:

    Therory:

Pats have been paying players under the table or in deferred contracts.
They have violated the Cap, and needed a secretive partner to move Seymour.
Enter Al who does not talk to the press.

The fight now is that Seymour wants his money he was promised before he validates the deal.

We know all of those star veterns love to play for the Pats for just for the glory.

Just like Denver in the 90s. cheaters

  94. KoolKell Says:

How could they NOT anticipate this:
    ———————–

Davis is probably sitting by his phone waiting for a call from Seymour, raving about how he can’t wait to don the Silver & Black with Pride & Poise and a Commitment to yadda-yadda.

Had Davis been aware that the Raiders have ceased to be Candyland, surely he would have phoned Seymour before the trade and tried to sweet-talk the big guy into accepting the deal.

Someone – anyone – in the Raiders’ front office should have warned Davis that this trade would not go down well with Seymour. The guess here is that Davis didn’t tell anyone. He probably worked this deal in secret one-on-one talks with Bill Belichick. That would explain why there were no media leaks. Those two don’t leak.

Now it’s a mess. If the trade is rescinded, Seymour is back with a coach who sold him way down the river, and the Raiders’ sagging rep takes a huge hit. If Seymour surrenders to Oakland authorities, imagine the joy on his face as he drives up to the Raiders’ haunted house.

The Raiders, once the Tahiti of NFL dream destinations, are now Alcatraz with goal posts. Will someone please explain this to Davis? If necessary, use an overhead projector.

    I disagree SnB,

There was no homework to do. The “does he want to play there” issue is a non issue. Just ask Ocho, Boldin, TO, Rogers, and all the other disgruntled players.

Al traded for a player under contract? The player’s permission is not needed.
    =======================================================
True. But a player in the last year of said deal does have leverage. Unless you intend to franchise him at $15 to $17 mil per annum?

I love the boldness of this move and a final acknowledgement that the d-Line is weak.

But something is wrong here. We traded a first round pick to get him in here to play Monday and for the next few years.

Not to play some of the season and probably with a bad attitude.

I just want to see some winnning man. I am sooooo tired of this 6 year skid!!!!!

If the raiders beat the chargers monday and then the chiefs, broncos and houston then there will be alot of people on the wagon for the raiders. For the record since the raiders are a terrible team how come they wasnt the first to go 0-16(Lions) atleast the raiders got wins and 3 superbowls and the best team right now is the STEELERS with 6superbowls

  102. Larz Says:

The NFL is not stepping in because neither party wants to mess up the deal by having someone ask WHY the Raiders needed a roster exemption for a trade that has not been consumated yet.

I really hope the Raiders are competitive Monday night. That’s more important at this point than a win or loss. Beating the Broncos, Chiefs and Texans is what really matters.

Trevor Scott needs to man up and justify his selection to the team and as a starter.

Gerard Warren has to start playing to his $5M+ contract (he makes more than Seymour by the way)

Tommy Kelly needs to emerge as a top 3 DT. That’s what he is being paid to do, especially as veteran.

Greg Ellis has to play to the talent he displayed in Dallas.

Ricky Brown can’t be a liability and Morrison has to play to the level he THINKS he’s at if he wants that contract.

Howard has to be more than another safety!

That’s the bottom line because SNB said so!

  107. RaiderRobG Says:

I felt good about our chances before the Seymour trade even saw the light of day and I feel good now.

It’s time we start focusing on the game and how the player we have are going to win this one.

True, and if Seymour is the truth then franchise him. You might be right. I just hope that IF or WHEN he gets here…he’s not a malcontent and a poison in the lockerroom.

But given the Raiders inability to develop D-Line talent….franchising Seymour a couple of years may be the next best alternative.

They really need that extra piece to that line.

    We will see.

  115. LA to TheBay Says:

Another point is that Al may not have been legally able to speak with Seymour prior to the trade, so how is he to know Seymour would act like a baby?

On the other hand, if it boils down to Al doesn’t want to pay the man, well, that’s on him. Now is not the time to get tight with the checkbook, Al. Pay the good players a lot and the not-as-good players less and the poor ones not at all.

  116. jhill Says:

I don’t think I’ve heard of Seymour being a bad team mate. I don’t think he sells the other 51 guys out by half assing it a la Moss or Brandon Marshall. Plenty of Pats fas “visiting” lately, so maybe they can chime in.

Unfortunately that’s water under the bridge. Would be nice to see Raji in Silver-n-Black #90 jersey.

We recognized the need for run defense way too late. The Raiders (and many fans) thought that John Marshall alone could duct tape this thing. It appears that was a gross miscalculation that has brought us to this sad place right now.

It wasn’t too late SnB. We were trying to get Wilfork ever since the draft, but the Pats were holding out. I mean look at all the business going on between the two this offseason.

By the time we caved and said, OK, a #1 it is, but we want Seymour instead of Wilfork if it’s going to be a number 1. It probably went more like that.

  129. inonewordraider Says:

“I don’t know what’s going on in the situation right now,” defensive end Greg Ellis said. “We obviously would love to have him here, but I respect Richard. He’s married with a wife and kids. People so many times want to say, ‘Well, those athletes want money, money, money.’ But you have to understand we are people. We do have wives, and we do have kids, and he’s a guy who has both a wife and kids. They’re in schoolout on the East Coast, so to jump up in a matter of a week and get out here and be ready to play a whole season. Do you bring your wife and kids or you leave your wife and kids? So it’s a tough situation.”

intersting take, but Seymour get ur rich self to Oakland and let your employer and fans know your happy to be with a team that wants you and is willing to part w/ a #1 for you

  130. itzSteve Says:

Seymour will be here…book it! The list Lombardi is referring to is the non reporting list, in which the NFL allowed the Raiders to resign Joeseph so we have a full 53 on the field for SD. That’s why no other player was released when he signed. Once Seymour does report and pass the physical, the issue will be if Joeseph stays, or they release someone else (Watkins?).

  131. jhill Says:

    I don’t know Lefty …

Would’ve loved to be a fly on that wall.

But think about it, why draft Brace? Brace and Wilfork are the same guy. I think they were playing poker holding out for a #1 pick. The holdup was Al not wanting to give up a #1 for Wilfork. Thought he could add DHB AND a VETERAN DT instead of Raji and a vet WR.

Al finally caved on the #1 but wanted a better player than Wilfork.

On Chronical Live last night, they had the radio voice of the Pats on, and he stated that Seymour and his agent were in talks about a contract extension. Obviously those talks broke down and they traded him to the Raiders. The contract extension talks now have to start from scratch with Al, and who knows what it will take for Seymour to sign that extension.

BTW…I loved Greg Papa’s comment of “If Seymour shows up at 6:58p he should start!”…classic!

  140. Chris in NY Says:

    Listen,
Don’t believe the Raider bashers of the world.

The Seymour situation has nothing to do with him not wanting to play in Oakland.

This is all about leverage. Seymour’s agent grabbed some leverage in the negotiation for a contract extension by having Seymour fail to report.

Al must have decided that their demands were too much so gained some leverage back by issuing this letter. After 5 days Seymour risks being put on the “did not report list” for the entire season and missing out on his $3.5 mil (or whatever it is) for this year and then being forced to play for that same contract next year. So if Seymour held out to the point where the Raiders sat him for the season, he’d then go into the 2010 season under the same scenario, be a year older which doesn’t help his value and would have missed out on the $3.5 mil he could’ve pocketed in 2009. And the Raiders could still franchise him after the 2010 season.

I believe Seymour is cool with playing for the Raiders. I don’t think Cable is making that up.

It’s just two sides locked in a negotiation. Al’s trying to do what’s best for his side and his team and Seymour and his agent are trying to do what’s best for Seymour and his family.

Assuming they get a deal done that both sides like, they’ll all be on the same side.

The only possible way that Seymour never shows is if he’s so comfortable where he is and decides he has all the money he needs that he decides to retire rather than uproot his family and move 3,000 miles across the country.

  141. Nnamdi21 Says:

Report: Salisbury fired for cell phone shenanigans

Posted by Mike Florio on September 11, 2009 5:22 PM ET
Former NFL quarterback Sean Salisbury was a journeyman at best during his NFL career. After retiring from football, he became a mini-star at ESPN, despite an annoying tendency to speak in absolutes and hyperbole. (Case in point, he said before Super Bowl XLI that, if Devin Hester of the Bears returns a kick for a touchdown, Chicago will win. Hester did. Chicago didn’t.)

He left ESPN in early 2008, claiming that he wanted to move on to bigger and better things. Some thought that the powers-that-be in Bristol might not have been all that upset about the development.

Since then, Salisbury has generally faded into oblivion.

He’ll be even more oblivious, according to the folks at Deadspin, because he has been fired from Dallas radio station 105.3 the Fan. Per Deadspin, Salisbury “freaked out a station promo girl after sexting her.”

Salisbury reportedly got himself into hot water while in Bristol for showing to co-workers a certain type of self-portrait.

  154. 24 Says:

A late Seymour would be 10x better than a prepared Trevor Scott.

  155. 24 Says:

KoolKell – Well you and I both know why Al has to overpay and its because its hard to get players here knowing all the crap that goes on. People come here for the money and not the passion of the game so we don’t get the best out of those players. The Raiders have become the red headed step child of the league and its embarrassing. People just want to focus on winning instead of the drama. Gibril Wilson wanted to leave for that very reason. That guy came from NY of all places and not even he could hang with the Raider drama. Its overwhelming.

Theres too much focus on negative attention instead of winning games. Its become a popularity contest.
