Pre-practice update

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, September 12th, 2009 at 10:57 am in Oakland Raiders.

Appeared to be a full roster Saturday with the exception of wide receiver/kick return specialist Nick Miller, out with shin splints, and wide receiver Chaz Schilens, who has a broken foot.

It was Miller’s third missed pracitce. Coach Tom Cable said earlier in the week Johnnie Lee Higgins, last year’s kickoff returner before the arrivalof Justin Miller, was the backup. Louis Rankin was taking some reps as the kickoff returner Saturday in a light rain.

Cable will be available following practice, and may or may not discuss the arrival of Richard Seymour, who told the Boston Herald he would come to Oakland and play against San Diego Monday.

More to come later . . .

    Is miller playing?

  2. Braveheartraider Says:

Gotta figure that Cable has had some contact over and above that that he told us. I’m hoping he gave Seymour some idea of what’s expected of him and what role, limited or otherwise, he would have on Monday.

  3. 24 Says:

Thank GOD Seymour will play on Monday. I think we have a chance against the Chargers without him but the worry of having Tomlinson and Sproles running all over us makes it difficult to feel confident. Having Seymour in the game changes things completely in my mind, he just solidifies us.

  4. Braveheartraider Says:

“I didn’t demand anything to go there,” he said. “I’m happy to go there, and I told them that. But me and my family have never been separated. This was a difficult transition.” Seymour, NFL Network.

The negative press this deal got never really mentioned this as a possible explanation for the no-show. Typical.

  5. Florida Pete Says:

Mikey on the previous thread said that Seymour told his cousin’s aunt who told her gardener’s 10 year old who told his wife while he was being shown the ropes… that seymour planned to play one year here and then was going to resign with the Pats…

now, if this was the Pats plan… then tampering would be the issue…

if it’s Seymour’s plan… well, the reality that the Pats didn’t want him anymore will dawn on him…

he’s not going anywhere if the Raiders win this division… especially considering the credit he will be given for the turnaround…

if we win and go to the playoffs… Seymour retires a Raider…

  6. Lynn from Snot Says:

Ellis Warren Kelly Seymour looks a lot better than Burgess Warren Kelly Scott . Also rotating Bryant rather than Sands is a big plus.

    it’s all about the W…

and starting the season off with a W is huger than huge…

The Raiders need to zone blitz or man blitz pressure Rivers and when they do….cover his short hot reads…mainly to RB’s and TE’s. They Raiders also of course need to stay loose yet disciplined on defense and fill the freakin GAPS and wrap up!

On offense…..run the ball…throw screens…use double moves and curls….reverses…wr screens….bootlegs…..MIX IT UP! Keep the the Dischargers defense OFF BALANCE!

    …….

agre3d..,this is exactly what I expect to see from both sides this year too…especially the zone-blitzing from the defense

  19. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

JerryMac, just a hint. Seymour is probably using a private jet so don’t hang out at Jet Blue or Southwest. LOL

  20. 408RAIDER Says:

Will there be a presser. I have 2 admit jerry has been comming thru with the fixs a lil late but hey thats jerry. Thanks again

  21. Dude Says:

Dick Seymour is a good player, was a great player. He isnt worthe the franchise tag anymore however and more than likely will be one and done in Oakland. All you idiots slobbering over Al for making this deal will be crying in your Cheerios come April 2011 when NE is picking in the top 10.

  22. Haters-B-Gone Says:

Like I stated earlier what Big Al wants he gets..He will be there and ready to go.. Were headed in the right direction now..Go Raiders

  24. Dude Says:

That being said, makes the team better now, not in the future. The Raiders are still a 4to6 win team however.

  25. 24 Says:

Dude – Wow…what would you have suggested that we do? We needed some help.

  26. 24 Says:

408 – I think everyone should change their fantasy football team name to their blog nickname. How are we supposed to know who we’re playing against?

  27. GalacticGus Says:

Because of the lack of practice and familiarity with the Oakland defense, I hope Seymour does not become a detriment to the Raiders for the San Diego game.
although in the long run of the season, he will definitely be a great help to the d line.

  28. 24 Says:

The part that bothers me about the Raider Depth chart is it has Fargas as the starter which tells me that as soon as he gets healthy, he’ll be the starter again. Lame.

  29. Dude Says:

    24,

You think this team is close enough to mortgage the future on a solid veteran DE?

  30. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

From the dischargers web site, a preview of the game:

  31. Dude Says:

    24,

If Fargas earned the starting job why is it lame? Because YOU think he shouldnt be? You know more than Cable?

  32. 24 Says:

GalacticGus – I can’t possibly see how difficult its going to be for Seymour to jump into a game and play. I guess the most difficult thing would be his adjustment from being a 3-4 DE to a 4-3 and he hasn’t practiced that adjustment but the guy knows how to get to the passer and how to stop the run. Its like going out and playing street ball.

  33. r8dr4lfe21 Says:

    —————————————
In the NFL, the future is now! Any team except the whiners can have a turnaround. If cheapskate Bidwell’s Cards can do it, why not our Raiders.

  37. 408RAIDER Says:

    24. Well some of us are easy 2 spot i suggest you just use the smack talk thing thats what i do

  38. Dude Says:

    24,

Well, in your world it is a good deal then.

  39. Dude Says:

Because the Cardinals have/had alot of talent on both sides of the ball, good coaching and a good QB. The Raiders do not.

  40. Dude Says:

    24,

Even if its only for a year?

  41. 24 Says:

Dude – What difference does it make? I’d rather have Seymour than a DHB or a Huff or a Brayton or a Gallery. We don’t pick the greatest players in the 1st round anyways, I’d rather go with something already proven.

  42. Mistabrown Says:

Harrison spoke the truth. Seymour put a PR spin on it, what else was he supposed to do ?

If he wanted to be here he would have been here 4 or 5 days ago…..period

    The end.

  43. r8dr4lfe21 Says:

This is a great deal win now, and make the Pats draft late. Why anticipate what the draft will look like in 2 years when it’s hard enough to guess while it’s happening.

  44. Dude Says:

I guarantee the Pats will be picking top 10. Would bet my house on it.

Cue the funny “your house is a box” or “your house is a shack” comments…

  45. r8dr4lfe21 Says:

Cable spoke the truth as said by Seymour, not Harrison who is known to have a hatred towards the silver and black. Cable said he wanted to be hear, he just needed time to get his stuff together. He did not say or make it seem like Harrison put it.

  46. No More Infield or Trolls Says:

Who cares about the 31st pick in 2011? I sure don’t. Al want to win now. He may not even be here in 2011. besides isn’t that the year that the Mayans predicted the world would end/ There’s a chance that none of us will be here. Then who has the last laugh?

  54. HairyBush Says:

Hello Nation,I think it is rediculous that this story changed 10 times this week. (for better or worse)Whatever happened to being a journalist with integrity? Being a die hard Raider fan for 20+ years this is one of the more assanine “controversies” ever. This past week made me absolutlely sick to my stomach. Why couldn’t the media explore the possibility (more so then our beloved Jerry)that it was mainly (NOT ALL but majoritly)just issues with his personal life? I’ll tell you why, because that wouldn’t be interesting to read or watch and would make it a lot tougher to bash the Raiders, seeing as there is a reasonable and rational reason why Seymour hasn’t reported yet. Everyone is always so quick to assume, instead of reporting FACTS. I love educating myself on anything and everything that is Raiders, it just gets frustrating when there is multiple reports that contradict each other. All I have to say is I pray the Raiders win Monday. Unfortunetley I think it will set the tone for the season. They say the superbowl isn’t won or lost in one game, but in our case this game is huge. We have lost to those punks 11 times. Enough is enough, We need to get the confidence of beating the Chargers under our belt to help catapult us back into the “mix”. The last 6 years have been depressing for all of us, Seymour putting LT and Rivers on there back will help alleviate some of that pain. With that said- GO RAIDERS!
disclaimer-If Raiders lose Monday, but play with heart and intensity all hope is not lost.

  55. r8dr4lfe21 Says:

The point is we are all just guessing and hoping.
3 people know what was going on Seymour, Davis, and cable. That is why they kept there mouth shut and didnt assume like the rest of the media. They dig and dig to try to get info on our raiders and when we dont snitch they make up there own story. maybe to get into our skin and make us talk tough luck.

    Dude

Back to the old stage name, today I see. Was it yesterday RedRader yesterday and a few weeks back RaiderRon. You sure are the tricky one.

I thought you would be droolin and sweating for your game today USC against Ohio State. You are such a big fan of the USC suckers and their stupid fight song, over and over as they play it. The school is a one note samba.

Your always asking questions, do you ever have any answers or do you comment in here to be silly and stupid.

I would guess you hate the Raiders and just like Farglass. Did you know Farglass is injured and won’t start Monday Night. Your heart must be crushed, I bet you are just so hurt, you feel like crying.

Don’t despair, your medicore RB will be back to get two yards and a cloud of dust again very soon.

It’s tough keeping up with your nicks, but a long as Farglass is mentioned in this blog I will always be able too see, your brain less comments.

Let’s go OHIO STATE crush USC.

  61. Dude Says:

  63. No More Infield or Trolls Says:

Refreshingly quiet in here today. It will be really quiet after we win monday night…

  64. r8dr4lfe21 Says:

The point is it’s a guess and that is all it holds no merit. Not you or the media or the raiders no what will come of that draft pick, but if you can make your team better now, then you do it. You dont put a % on a guess thats why Vegas makes money cause they know in the end the house always wins.

  65. 24 Says:

Dude – Heres my thing. I think the Raiders will go 6-10 until they prove they can actually start winning and even that is optimistic. I think we have a team that can beat the Chiefs and Broncos but I’m not yet sure about the Chargers. To me, Norv Turner is destroying the team each year but we’ll soon find that out. For all we know, Seymour won’t have any affect on how bad the Chargers will beat us. It can still happen. However, despite feeling this way, I’m totally happy to get a player like Seymour and I just can’t understand how you don’t like the idea. I think these kind of trades are awesome. As to how much it makes us better, we’ll soon find out.

  66. No More Infield or Trolls Says:

I can find reasons to be optimistic and I am but I’m going to be logical about this. Whether I yell out that we’re going to win or not won’t make a difference. The team themselves have to believe they can win, not me.

All I can do is hope for the best. The Seymour trade was a step in the direction to getting better.

McFadden hasn’t had a full season yet, Fargas is always injured and Ranking is unproven and you guys want to trade Bush? You guys are crazy. If Cable really wanted to focus on the offensive line, he would have draft Eugene Monroe but guess what, his scheme allows him to find scraps to play the offensive line. Thats how he does his thing, Cable isn’t going to trade Bush for an offensive lineman, hes going to continue to find people that fit our scheme because they don’t need to be the most talented.

If McFadden’s toes start failing again and Fargas gets hurt as usual, you’re going to rely on Rankin and who? I believe we need Bush because he could be better than all of our running backs and hes more of a 25 carry back than McFadden.

I suppose you may be right. DT and DE is more instinctual than lets say, middle linebacker which may be more cerebral and having the duty of calling in the plays on Defense or being the captain of the Defense having plays Radioed in like the Quarterback.
however, there are still plays involved. There are intricacies in defensive plays such as coordinated d line stunts and stuff like that. Am I right? or correct me if I am wrong.

OTTAWA — The Ottawa Senators have sent disgruntled winger Dany Heatley to San Jose in exchange for Milan Michalek, Jonathan Cheechoo and a second-round pick.

    Heatley
The Sharks also got a fifth-round pick in the deal announced on Saturday.

The trade on the opening day of training camp ends a dispute that has overshadowed the Senators in recent months.

The 28-year-old Heatley said he wanted out of Ottawa because he wasn’t being used properly. But he angered fans when he refused to waive a no-trade clause to go to Edmonton.

The Sharks beef up their offense by acquiring a former 50-goal scorer. Heatley had 39 goals and 33 assists last season.

Sheesh, say a guys a good player and you STILL get drilled in here. Wow. Would have loved to hear your opinion on him 2 weeks ago. Something tells me you wouldnt be so kind.

    Jhill,

I am assuming he was a non kool aid drinker. Why do all the reality folk have to be one person? LOL

GalactisGus – You’re right but I think the players will help him with the plays on gameday and who knows…when Seymour was traded to the Raiders, I would think the team sent him the playbook regardless of whether he was here or not. How much he studied or how much he retained is another story but hes been apart of some intricate playbooks under Belichick so I’m sure learning our playbook is probably easier based on what we usually do.

I’m looking forward to see how my Notre Dame team is going to play. Go Irish!

LOL! Again based off what? He was better in 2005 even though his stats alone weren’t as good as last year. In fact he missed more time 4 years ago than last year…So again I ask where has his overall play slipped as you said? Or are you just talking of your anus like Maddenliar does.

Who said the Raiders “mortgaged the future”?.

The Raiders have 4 picks among the top 96 in next year’s draft, we should add a couple of good players there.

Yes, they lost a 1st round pick two years from now…. but trading a 1st round pick for a player who is, at least, an above average starter makes plenty of sense to me, specially when that player fills your biggest need.

I do hate to lose draft picks, but according to Bill Polian’s research of the last 27 drafts roughly 50 percent of first-round selections never live up to expectations.

“It never fails” Colts general manager Bill Polian said.

  112. Dude Says:

Umm… he hasnt played a full season in 2 or 3 years. He hasnt been as dominant as he used to be. Your using nothing but stats which dont always tell the whole story. All your doing is using GOOGLE to get your info. Its a pretty universal opinion that he has slipped a bit. Like I said hes still good, just not as good as he used to be. GOOGLE on bra! LOL

  113. jhill Says:

Because he said he was more than one person. He literally said he posted in here under another name, got banned, and had to do what he had to do to get back in.

Coincidentally, you had not been around in a while. I guess some people tied you two together.

I think at this point your Anti Davis kool aid has got to be losing it flavor. It is just INSANE to paint this trade as anything but a good move by Al. The number one NEED on the team was filled by a top 5 player and all for a future draft pick.

The funniest thing to me about your stance is the bashing of Al’s ability to draft. And imagine what he will do in 2011. To say that it was a bad move to fill the # 1 need on the team with an asset that “probably” would be bungled anyway is laughable. The guy could bring in Boldin, an all pro RT, a MLB, and whoever else and you guys would still be saying 6-10.

You are just NOT making any sense. But whatever.

  114. Dude Says:

Funny how a guy becomes “great” only after the Raiders aquire him. Kind of like how DHB was all the sudden “great” after the draft.
