Thrid quarter: Raiders 10, Chargers 10
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, September 14th, 2009 at 9:56 pm in Oakland Raiders.
No scoring
Notes:
– JaMarcus Russell found his security blanket Zach Miller for a gain to the 41, then Johnnie Lee Higgins took a reverse to the 21-yard line as the quarter ended. Russell was a lead blocker, pushing back safety Eric Weddle.
– Chargers forced to punt again after three-and-out, Greg Ellis sacking Rivers, with Richard Seymour helping to collapse the pocket. Fans loving the defensive effort, growing impatient with offense. With third quarter winding down, Chargers have just 152 yards and have worked for every one of them.
— Chargers melting down, faced third-and-30 after a taunting penalty and false start. Mike Scifres punts. Game just waiting for Raiders to take it over.
– Russell drew some boos for misfiring on a third-and-5 pass to a wide open Darrius Heyward-Bey after Oakland started a possession on its own 48. Three-and-out.
– Chargers are seriously hurting up front with G Louis Vasquez and now C Nick Hardwick out with injuries. Raiders force a three-andout and get possession at the 48 following 19-yard return by Johnnie Lee Higgins of Mike Scifres bomb.
– Raiders opened with their worst series of the game. Three-and-out, two incompletions not near anyone by Russell. Second one under pressure.
– Huge stop by Raiders on opening series. With Rivers heating up, Michael Huff picked off a pass which deflected off the hands of Antonio Gates and returned it 10 yards to the 38. Score would have given Chargers considerable momentum following events that ended the first half.

Where can I get my Cable throwback jersey
September 14th, 2009 at 9:52 pm
DFENCE is lookn ALMOST dominating, but they’ve been on the field…can we maintain if the offence cant score?
JMAC looks TERRIBLE…we’ve had 3 passes that receiver was WIDE open, and jmac overthrows, …overthrow isnt even the WORD…
as much as i didnt like garcia in our system, he WOULD have made those passes!
September 14th, 2009 at 9:53 pm
Everyone on the team is playing hard
Jano saved a TD
JR blocking like a madman
September 14th, 2009 at 9:54 pm
Now we get to kickoff to sproles….
September 14th, 2009 at 9:54 pm

September 14th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
The good news is time of possesion is in the Raiders favor. D should be fresh.
September 14th, 2009 at 9:55 pm
this game is SOOOOOO in our grasp…if we lose bc of ONE player-namely jmac, he needs BENCHED, he has a huge upside, but, LET HIM DEVELOP W PRACTICE ON THE BENCH!!!

Can’t wait for Chaz to get back. If the Offense can put up 17 points a game we can do some damage this year. We need more points. And have you noticed that when we stop the run we don’t have to blitz!
……………
yea bra’, i agree, BUT!!!… we SHOULD have put MORE THAN 17 pts on the board already, not even counting the 7 pts we got ROBBED ON
September 14th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
is this the nfl or nfl blitz? lol
September 14th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
as bad as our O-Line is, they have held up tonight, just gotta get Russell to calm down and focus.
September 14th, 2009 at 9:59 pm
Nice shoelace tackle there.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Well, at least he completed another pass. Helps his confidence. And we took the lead.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:00 pm
Looks like Plunket to christinson.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
#75 missed his block or McFadden is still running.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:01 pm

Two key stats so far. . .
Penalties: Raiders 3-15, Chargers 8-55
Sacked-yds lost: Raiders 0-0, Chargers 3-12
September 14th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
LETS GO DEFENSE!
September 14th, 2009 at 10:04 pm
The effort is thier for the first time in along time lets keep the pressure on them
September 14th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
Wheres Jeff Garcia when you need him? Oh yeah…Philadelphia.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:05 pm
2 terrible calls by Marshall
September 14th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
Come on. Big stop!
September 14th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
63 yards rushing for the discharge
September 14th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
My heart sunk. The Raiders should have many more points. The loss of Chaz for this game is huge. And I said it before, Fargas would have helped in the second half.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:06 pm
How much a factor Seymour has been!!!
September 14th, 2009 at 10:07 pm
time to see if this is the new Raiders Team, time to step it up!
September 14th, 2009 at 10:08 pm
grrrrrrrrrrr…cant lettem off the hook
September 14th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
I really think Chaz and Fargas would have helped. Russell trust Chaz, and Fargas could have ate up clock in the second half.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
GIVING IT UP ON 3RD AND LONG’S ARE KILLING THE DEFENSE.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
we need a turnover… fumble… int
September 14th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
nice run. Keep it up.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
Gotta hold this to a FG attempt.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:10 pm

7 min td drive
September 14th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
D is tired because of those 3 and outs, gotta get more outta our offense and let those guys get a breather.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Well, there should be a surge in haters here shortly.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
we are done! thats always the cue!
September 14th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
oh dear god, either now we will complete passes or else it gets worse, much worse.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Looked like the old “Sticks Defense” on that 3rd down.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
Now it’s gut check time.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:13 pm
If we lose I put the blame squarely on Jamarcus Russell. He has misfired all game long.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:13 pm

As I said in the Bills game, a Bad team always finds a way to lose.
Time to find out if Oakland is a bad team.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
Well it’s been a good game. Not the blowout I was expecting. If Russell plays better, we win.
There’s always next week.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
Kush, if it’s Russell’s fault, it’s Kiffin’s fault. Kiffin stunted his growth. He stunted his growth, I tell ya!! Anyone? Anyone?
September 14th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
the guys will only buy into the scheme if you win some.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
Really sad that Nnamdi was on him. That’s our best player.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
Time for Russell to earn his money…period (posting to quickly blah)
September 14th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
The game is not over.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Can’t blame JR for that one. Wow. When it falls apart, it all falls apart.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:17 pm
Alisobviouslynotgod,
We actually used a cover 1 most of the night. Notice all of those replays where we had a safety just covering the middle of the field deep, confusing the heck out of Rivers. On that sproles play, we basically ran a prevent. Dropped everyone. That, unfortunately, is another sign Al is still dropping in. We need to stick to that cover 1. With our speed at the corners, it’s the perfect D for us.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
CAN NOT GIVE IT UP ON 3RD AND LONG,,
September 14th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
We were so close. Damn it.
Honestly I was expecting the worst today and it didn’t happen, but having the lead and giving it up in the fourth AGAIN sucks.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Uh Oh qb controversy
September 14th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
Well, I wish we had Garcia now.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:19 pm
This could be the reason we win.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
All they’ll let Grad do is hand it off.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
Russell: “I look like Tila Tequila to you, mother f***r?”
September 14th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
we are in trouble
September 14th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
I stand corrected.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
Look…an accurate pass.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:20 pm
CUT GREEN RIGHT NOW!
I MEAN RIGHT NOW, NOT LET HIM EVEN FINISH THE GAME
September 14th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
They may be better of with Gradkowski at this point.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:21 pm
Gradkowski is already better…sorry.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:22 pm
Now it’s over
September 14th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

September 14th, 2009 at 10:22 pm

Did I say before that my maiden name is MURPHY?
September 14th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
When the Raiders win in week one, they go to the playoffs. That’s been the case like 28 of the past 30 seasons. You guys still denying the significance of that stat? Didn’t think so.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
D has to make a play
September 14th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
Why rush 3? Al freakin Davis.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:34 pm
turnover
September 14th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
We are playing prevent without Rob Ryan here…What does that tell you people?
September 14th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Now is the time for a blitz…. We need more pressure come get out of this D…..
September 14th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Cover 1 on defense. Run the football on offense. This team has a blueprint to at least being competitive again. Let’s see if we stick to it. I start seeing those forced deep balls or that useless 2 man under in a few weeks…
September 14th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Get out of this D and keep attacking… Stop rushing 4 we need more pressure….
September 14th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Seymour sack coming up
September 14th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
I’m glad we hurried up and kicked the extra point…!…
September 14th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
Rush 7 or 8….. We need a stop
September 14th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
For the love of God Raider’s defense…just hold them for 2 frigging minutes. Please!!!!
September 14th, 2009 at 10:36 pm
We have got to make a stop.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:37 pm
Man, no matter the outcome at this point, it has been an exciting game. Well worth being shown on MNF, which hasn’t happened often for Oakland lately.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
The return of the Al Davis defense…
What happened to that cover 1 we’ve been using all game? You know, the one that had Rivers completely confused?
September 14th, 2009 at 10:38 pm
They are playing scared.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
We let them run the same play over and over.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
Rivers could not do jack against that cover 1, all night. We used that prevent on the play with sproles, they convert. We’re using the prevent now, and SD is marching right down field. Yes, I’m being negative, guys. Al Davis is meddling. This is BS.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
Bad teams find a way to lose.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
September 14th, 2009 at 10:40 pm

September 14th, 2009 at 10:40 pm
the D is spent, not looking good
September 14th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
I don’t care who the Defensive Coordinator is…This prevent crap shows up EVERYTIME!!!
September 14th, 2009 at 10:41 pm
we need a urnover
September 14th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
Chargers look like they will score
September 14th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
is this a singletary and his d fense moment??? wow
September 14th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
Chargers will score and we won’t have any time left on the clock. Typical. We just can’t ever enjoy a win.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
I really wanted to believe. Going to pour that Kool-Aid down the drain now.
Good night, Nation.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:43 pm
Every year people. Nothing has changed. We gave up.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
game should be tied!
September 14th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
I have seen this too much.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
Al Davis’s meddling lost us another game, and probably another season, since the Raiders’ season usually goes the way their first game goes.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:44 pm
It seems like Al Davis sets this up just to see his QB throw a deep ball for the game winning TD at the last second.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Al Davis and his defense makes me hate football.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
Cable is pissed
September 14th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
They may have won, but they go home battered and bruised.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:47 pm
The refs in this game make me hate football
September 14th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
MR is elated
September 14th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
If we just used the same defense we used most of the game, they would not have scored. They would have went 4 and out. Rivers was trying to throw the ball downfield all day and simply couldn’t against that cover 1, with the safety roaming the middle of the field, and man defense everywhere else. And blame the coaches all you will. One problem: We’ve seen this unnecessary switch to the prevent in the past 10 years. Lord Davis ruins another one with his disastrous meddling.
September 14th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
I guess you called it though
September 14th, 2009 at 10:48 pm
PLAY’D JUST WELL ENOUGH 2 LOOSE, TOUGH TO TAKE !!!
September 14th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Russles got a looooong way to go…. but the D… is getting better… the o line is getting better…
September 14th, 2009 at 10:49 pm
Peace out guys atleast we have hope i know i am feeling better about the season then i did before the game wish we could have held on
