Chief WR Bowe has advice for Russell
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 1:48 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders coach Tom Cable isn’t the only one eager for JaMarcus Russell to assert himself as a leader.
Dwayne Bowe, a former teammate at LSU and the Chiefs’ most productive wide receiver for the past two seasons, told Bay Area reporters he think’s it’s time for Russell to take charge.
“He’s kind of a laid-back guy,” Bowe said. “I told him he’s got to be more (of a leader), not screaming in guys’ faces, but going to the side, tell them what they did wrong or afterwards, stay an extra hour or focus to improve your game and he said he’s going to start that up.”
Upon arrival at LSU, Bowe said Russell was “kind of a quiet, laid-back country boy, but once he got he hang of it, got more focused, he became a more vocal leader. He called extra meetings, watched extra film at his house, stuff like that.”
When asked if he thought Russell would be a star in Oakland, Bowe said, “I know what he can do. It’s just, when can he do it? And I told him, his time is running out in the NFL. I want to see now, and I want to see a year from now, feeling up to it. You have to take into consideration to take the show yourself and he just feels like he’s young and he’s got a lot of older guys in front of him that’s kind of mentoring him.
“But I said, You’re the quarterback on that team; you’re going to be the franchise player. You need to be the franchise. I told him, you need to take over every drill, every meeting, and just see how it goes. If you do it and it don’t work out well, stop. But if you do it and you’re successful, keep going. So I’m just waiting (to see) the headlines taking over Oakland.”
More to come . . .

Given the fact that Routt had an awfull preseason and that our 4th CB is Bowie, maybe signing McAllister is good news.
He is still started last year for the Ravens before going down with injury.

First pick overall in the draft and the
Raiders of course screw it up. Lets get
a soft-spoken country boy to lead our
team out of the abyss. Brilliant.

Thats actually good advice from 1 of his former teammates. If some of Russels throws look off but its actually the wide receivers fault then Russel should be on the side line telling them what they did wrong and him and the wideouts need to practice longer than everyone else and work on timing issues

Rotoworld:
Free agent CB Chris McAlister is reportedly telling people close to him that he’ll “eventually” sign with the Raiders.
The fit’s sensible, if only because Al Davis thinks he can turn just about any former first-round pick’s career around. McAlister is 32 years old, has chronic knee issues, and wouldn’t be a threat to Chris Johnson’s starting job.

Bowe is not only a former teammate, Bowe and Russell are best friends.

The receivers should be tearing a sttrip off of Russell on the sideline for missing them by 10 yards.

Jhill..you’re still confused, little buddy.
Let’s try it again.
You may borrow anyone else’s balls here if it will help you actually formulate a response.
Comments directed at you, from others, and yours truly you seem to keep avoiding.
Cable has stated Russell has only been given 40% of the playbook last year. Guy had two full years to learn the playbook..and was ONLY able to grasp 40%.
Many have stated Russell is ’slow’..you gather your dress, and wave your index finger with the “oh no you don’t” reply, but you never address why is it he, AND ONLY HE has the play book dumbed down?
Every rookie is expected to learn the playbook during training camp, in many cases, yet Russell seems to be..well…for lack of a better term, ‘as smart as a rock’.
That was Cable’s comments, BTW..anything on that? Or do you just accept that Russell is “slow’? ..you know..”the laid back county boy”? lol

From Bowe: “stay an extra hour or focus to improve your game and he said he’s going to start that up.”
Russell is going to “start that up”??
Uh..a player..from ANOTHER TEAM..has suggested to your #1 draft pick, your qb, to stay an extra hour or focus to improve your game” and Russell replies to him “Yeah, I’m going to start doing that”?
DIDN’T KIFFIN SUGGEST THAT TO RUSSELL??
didn’t Cable do the same thing..LAST YEAR..to Russell??
What is wrong with this picture?
I mean, when other players state it’s so obvious he’s not doing what he should be doing, it’s not a good sign.

DKnight007…post #41 from Nick Miller:
“Excellent-insight,” reflected in your post. Yes, we need to do “much” more in those areas. That’s the only way you can utilize DHB speed skills while also getting him into the game in a ;productive manner. Result, confident booster for the kid and more productive yardage for the team in general.
Come on “Offensive-Coordinator,” do your freaking job without having us telling you what your suppose to be doing. Earn your freaking money, DUDE!
September 16th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
ricchochet,
cable was not the head coach all of last year or the year before. the play book is NOT the same as it was under kiffin. so saying he had 2 years to learn the playbook makes no sense.

For most teams, this would be JR’s year to prove his worth. But I’m sure Al will stick with him (regardless of his performance) for one more season. Then you continue to fish or cut it loose.
I think he’ll come around, but it will be a bumpy year. Our much improved D will keep us in virtually EVERY game this season. So, with average numbers (200 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT combined with our running game) we’ll win half those games. If in certain games he exceeds those numbers, the wins will pile up.
Give JR this season.

Word from the barbershop, was that this was the best game seen in these parts in 6 years.
“They need to get out of that prevent stuff”
“Russell struggled, but was gutsy.”
September 16th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Any word on John Madden? did he not attend the Monday night opener? Since he is working with the league and reviewing the games, I would like to hear his voice and his take on the Murphy TD that was reversed.
September 16th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
I think Cable was right in calling out JR earlier this off-season. I think we all saw that JR responded by staying in Oakland in the off season, working harder in film study, workouts, attending OTAs, inviting receivers to Alabama for extra work, etc. I believe that he will assume more leadership roles this year. He’s only 24 y.o. and you can’t command respect until you out work everybody first. I think he’s on the way to getting there.
September 16th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
First, off a best friend wouldn’t call you out in the press like that. Second, Bowe should be much more worried about his own losing franchise than Oakland’s. I hope we shut them out in their house.

It’s funny how people are already comparing him to Ryan Leaf. Ryan Leaf was a hot head, and I never saw him try to improve. He was destined to be a bust. JaMarcus is taking steps at the right direction at the very least.

Russel needs to stop showing up to the post game conference with his “BLINGS” like he’s some superstar! How can you show up after a performance like he has and show off your diamong watch, earings, bracelet, and chains? It’s about time you earn the money the fans pay you. Win some games for us. Better yet, complete a freakin pass.
September 17th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
cable said russell had 40% of the play book last year and yes like always you left out the rest of the story now has 80$ of the play book also heard the same type of things about farve, flacco, ryan last year i wonder how slow couch, carr, and alex smith are
September 17th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
russell can wear whatever he wants “free country” and al pays him not you lol
September 18th, 2009 at 10:43 am
glad you can lol at yourself…As a season ticket holder for 10 years, I’m certain my contributions go to funding this organization.
“In My Opinion” all that flashy stuff shows his maturity level and focus on the game. Look at the results. If he was having 300+ yards or improving is passer rating and winning games for us then might change idk… look at the other young guys that show up in suits. He needs to focus on the playbook and his game! not his bling!
