DHB says he had `solid’ opener
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, September 16th, 2009 at 2:27 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Rookie first-round draft pick Darrius Heyward-Bey has no receptions, one (official) dropped pass but no shortage of self-assurance.
Heyward-Bey termed his first game as “solid” and disagreed with coach Tom Cable’s assessment that he played like a nervous rookie in his first game.
“Naw man. I felt the same I always did since I’ve been playing in high school,” Heyward-Bey said Wednesday. “I started high school football late and I’ve been feeling the same ever since.”
Heyward-Bey dropped a pass along the sideline that was negated by penalty, and later had a slant pass go thorugh his hands, hit him to the chest and fall to the ground.
“I thought I saw a real nervous, uptight young man, a lot of big eyes,” Cable said Tuesday at his press briefing.
Heyward-Bey is apparently growing tired of hearing about gaining a “chemistry” with JaMarcus Russell in the passing game.
“I really don’t look at it as they have chemistry or anything like that. I think that’s a stupid thing to say,” Heyward-Bey said. “The plays are designed, you’ve got to have the reads and that’s who he throws the ball to. I’m just sittting back doing my job. That’s what I got to do. I play the `X.’
“I’ve got the backside of things. I’m supposed to pull that safety over, I’m supposed to make this side of the field easier for JaMarcus to read. So that’s my job.”
In other words, a multi-million dollar decoy.
“As long as the coaches notice that’s all that matters,” Heyward-Bey said. “I don’t really care what the fans think or what anyobody else thinks. As long as they see I’m doing the job they want me to do, they’re the ones paying me.”
Russell talked Wednesday of wanting to get Heyward-Bey an early reception to improve his confidence.
“You need to, give him some confidence early in the game. Hey, I caught one, I’l catch the next one. We gotta build him up, as much as we do the rest of the guys.,” Russell said.
In a conference call with Bay Area media, Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe spoke about the anxiety of being a rookie without a reception.
“Oh, man, I had jitters until I got my first catch. It took like two quarters. Can you just imagine two quarters of just shaking?,” Bowe said. “If you’re a playmaker, you’re a playmaker. Once you tell yourself that and don’t lose confidence . . . all the great receivers drop balls, mess up here and there, but it’s how you come back that makes you special.”
(For the record, Bowe’s first official catch came on a the second play of the Chiefs first offensive series in 2007 _ a 6-yard catch from Damon Huard. Maybe he forgot. Bowe also said he got hit so hard in the first game he couldn’t remember all of it).
If Heyward-Bey is aching for that first catch, he’s hiding it well.
“I’m not even thinking about the first catch,” Heyward-Bey said. “Just thinking about getting better each and every week, coming out here to practice. It’s a new week and we’ve got the Chiefs on our hands, so prepare for them.
More news, notes and quotes to follow after post-practice press briefing with Cable . . .

BALTIMORE SUN 16 SEPTEMBER 2009:
McAlister to Oakland?
Former Ravens cornerback Chris McAlister was in Baltimore over the weekend, and apparently has told a few people close to him that he will eventually sign with the Oakland Raiders.
McAlister is not believed to be near playing shape, and that could take another week or two.
It makes sense that McAlister could end up with Oakland. Raiders owner Al Davis has taken troubled players in the past and given them second chances. McAlister is definitely looking for another opportunity.
If his knees are healthy, he can still become one of the best defensive backs in the league, possibly as a safety.

I just can’t say DHB had a ‘’solid” game.

Rockstar,
Word from the barbershop, was that this was the best game seen in these parts in 6 years.
“They need to get out of that prevent stuff”
“Russell struggled, but was gutsy.”
September 16th, 2009 at 2:31 pm
He is right, chemistry is not the problem when you over throw him by 15 yards, under throw him by 10 yards and hit him in the chest and he drops its!!!!! COMON!!!!

Steve Young said that Cable is only using 80% of the playbook this year?
You really want me to comment on what a 3rd party said? What if Young made that up? Like your other quote alleged to Cable that you ultimately backtracked off of.
Ok, well HY-POTHETIC-LY, if Cable only has 80% of the playbook opened to JRuss at this point then …. he is a B student?
Well since all I need is decent, then I guess he’ll do.
Now is there ANY chance we can get an answer out of you?
How about the last 2 minutes of the game? What’s your take on that?
Oh, and the team you root for again?
September 16th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Sounds like Bey is hiding.
September 16th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
I mean Cable even went 2 bat 4 him and gave an excuse,a kid playing on MNF.Then Bey says Naw.Get a clue ROOKIE

What is Walker doing ? besides taking up a roster spot and collecting a check.
September 16th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
My apologies to EVERYONE for suggesting we overlook stuff and sign TO!
I could not have been more wrong!
OMG, did you hear him throw Edwards under the bus for the loss?
Obviously we didn’t get the ball to myself and Lee like we wanted?
Trent has to do a better job of assessing what he sees and get the ball downfield?
WTF ?!?!?!?
Again, MY BAD!

Looks like Shockey hung on after he fell, but that looked more like an in completion than Murphys.

if DHB is just a decoy, why not see if he can return punts and take advantage of that speed?
worst case scenario: we lose our decoy… LOL

You really want me to comment on what a 3rd party said? What if Young made that up? Like your other quote alleged to Cable that you ultimately backtracked off of.
Richochet: Idiot. Stick to the comment. Quit waffling. Quit wandering all over the place, like little kids do when they get caught.
is that going to be your childish reply for everything when you get shot down? “Oh, I don’t want to believe them”? DID YOU SEE CABLE DENY IT SINCE THEN? Or anyone?
Hey, doesn’t matter..I GUARANTEED YOU WOULD WAFFLE. I guaranteed you wouldn’t step up and comment on it.
Because you’re a sorry little wimp, with no life.
Dude..you’re textbook wannabee. You live vicariously through a sport team. You equate your self worth with how they do, and how they’re viewed. That’s why you get all miffed when comments are against Al, or Russell, or the organization. You SCREAM INSECURE.
Young was dead on.
Hell, Kiffin said the same thing, that he had to keep the plays he gave him to a minimum..AND THAT WAS IN WEEK 13 OR SO.
told ya..russell is a slug..as Bowe pointed out.
——————————————–
Ok, well HY-POTHETIC-LY, if Cable only has 80% of the playbook opened to JRuss at this point then …. he is a B student?
Richochet: Idiot reply. Again, how old are you? You a drop out? Seriously..you are, aren’t you?
See, that weakass reply loses you respect from everyone..even those not wanting to admit it. Means you’re weak. Means you’re desperate to say something/anything. Sometimes less is more. You should learn that.
Like it or not, ALL ROOKIES ARE EXPECTED TO LEARN THE WHOLE PLAY BOOK..not part..not half..not “hoping they’ll call a play I know”..YOU MORON.
think about it.
Last year the Raiders were limited in that all they could call were 40 PERCENT OF THE PLAYS IN THEIR PLAYBOOK.
You think that might have something to do with the Raiders being the worst in yards? completions? 3rd down conversions?
Yet, you, being a flea, say Russell gets a “B”? lol..yeah..B for Bonehead.
—————————
Well since all I need is decent, then I guess he’ll do.
Now is there ANY chance we can get an answer out of you?
How about the last 2 minutes of the game? What’s your take on that?
Richochet: Already said it. I’ll say it again. Russell’s play cost the team. Save that weak “they were ahead”..
Here..let me give you CABLE’S TAKE, fool.
– Asked about Russell’s inability to get the ball to wide receivers (3-for-18 to wideouts, 9-for-12 to running backs and tight ends), Cable said, “I think there’s some inaccuracy there. The poise, I thought, was the most improvement in JaMarcus Russell, I thought his timing was better. He didn’t hold the ball as much. Now I’ve got to dail it in and throw to the proper shoulder and those sorts of things in terms of accuracy.”
You’ll notice that NO WHERE does anyone put this on the defense. They held one of the better defenses to the numbers they did, and YOU WANT TO TAKE THIS OFF OF RUSSELL, AND PUT IT ON THE DEFENSE??
Russell sucked the whole game. You, being a sorryass, reply to badly thrown balls, horrible misses, by saying “oh, but after that he made a completion”..
FOOL..50% COMPLETION IN THE NFL AND YOU’RE OUT OF A JOB..Russell’s was 40%.
Russell HELD THE TEAM BACK, moron.
There are 11 guys on offense. 10 did their best. One sucked. 10 went all out. 1 played like a high school rookie.
And you want to blame the D because Russell completely sucked, costing the Raiders easily 14 plus points?
Yeah..figures…spineless worms, who live vicariously through a team NEVER ADMIT MISTAKES BECAUSE IN THEIR TWISTED WAY, they believe it reflects on them.
Like I said, you’re sad..in so many ways, dude, lol..so many.
JHILL: “I give Russell a B. THAT WORKS FOR ME”
Yes, LMFAO.
———————————-
Oh, and the team you root for again?
Richochet: Told you 6 times already. I LOVE THE RAIDERS.
Your silly diversion replies fool no one, little man
Again, how old are you?

Jerry,
During one of you on line chats I said to you that DHB sounds like he was being an expensive decoy and you shot that idea down! You stated that his play will be designed to take 2 defenders away. Now you state that he’s an expensive decoy like you came up with it! Really??!!
September 16th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
DHB needs a dictionary. He must think ’solid’ means ’sucked’.

“Sorry but local health standards require you to wear pants at all times during your trim.”
“No, you still can’t pay me with Arby’s roast beef melts.”
“I keep telling you, Krappy – the blow dryer is not a computer keyboard and will not let you cannot log onto the blog.”

If JLH can’t go, Eugene will be PR. Yvonne back up PR. Yvonne to get WR snaps at practice. Cable not bringing anyone in for PR.–D. White’s twitter.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Great. Eugene can’t catch, and Yvonne has no burst (according to Cable) Take the needle JLH for the team.
September 16th, 2009 at 3:41 pm
Randy Moss was a multi-million dollar decoy here …(just saying) …DHB will not always be a decoy.
He’ll get it. Its only one game. And stop getting all pissy because the guy says he doesn’t care what you all say.
Quite frankly I wouldn’t either.
September 16th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
Hmm.
Our 4th rounder has a chip on his shoulder because he wasn’t taken in the 1st. Maybe our 1st rounder will have a chip on his shoulder because our 4th rounder’s outshining him.
I think these two will make eachother better eventually. Give the guy at least a couple weeks before you call him a bust.
To me, DHB just sounds frustrated. I’m sure he would have wanted more opportunities, but you have to take advantage of what you get.
Being used as a decoy is probably not what he’s after, but is sticking to the company line by saying he’s doing what the coaches want, etc.
it on the cable to get DHB in the game they have him runing deep all the time. the cornerbacks are ten yards off him all the time.
Are you f’n kiddin me!!! NFLN Playbook is talking about the SDvsRaiders game and they have the audacity to talk about how great Phillip Rivers is!!??????
He was the Raiders personal ping pong almost all damn game!!
The media just needs to get off the SD bandwagon (and the Patriots). Oakland just trashed that whole team …they’ll be lucky to get a win in the next few weeks.
September 16th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Everyones all worked up in here over DHBs comments, but I see nothing wrong with them except that they will be taken the wrong way by the fans. It’s obvious all the negative talk about him is getting to him. And to not come away with some catches in his debut probably makes him sick. Yeah, he should just say that but, he is just a kid.
I told all you guys when we drafted him he’s a project HIGH RISK/HIGH REWARD. He’ll ome around. If we can do like Russell said and get him some easy catches early you’ll all see I speak the truth. I can’t remember being wrong about anything Raiders this year and I don’t plan on it
….well, maybe my shouting about how Walker was gonna be comeback player of the year. You can’t do that from the bench.
9-7!
Coach was supposed to make sure DHB got involved early; a quick-hitch, slant or bubble screen. That would have helped to get the jitters out & build confidence with his teamates. What did The Hoodie do w/Brady’s first throw? Stand in the pocket & go deep to get the fear out!
DHB is right though…if the D has to roll 2 to his side, then he IS doing his job but was only thrown to twice!
Two drops in his first game. What else can you expect from someone who was asking to be red-shirted for his first year. That’s not exactly a “Jerry Rice” work ethic.
Perhaps DHB can be renamed Darrius Heyward-Jett. But at least the Raiders didn’t use draft pick on Jett, let alone the 7th overall.
September 17th, 2009 at 9:47 am
DHB You need to catch at least a ball to be even a docoy.
Chaz are you good to go yet? We need you Murphy and Chaz are a great combo! DHB on the slot.
Huff is not a bust he had the only interseption. We Should move him to corner though he would shine there!
DHB didnt paly well at all. I HOPE he steps up, but it looks like murphy is our #1 WR for this year, and maybe years to come.
