Chris who?

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, September 17th, 2009 at 3:46 pm in Oakland Raiders.

If the Raiders are planning on bringing in former Baltimore Ravens cornerback Chris McAlister, they’re (surprise!) keeping it a secret.

Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reports the Raiders are signing McAlister and that he might even play Sunday against the Chiefs.

“I don’t know anything about it,” coach Tom Cable said.

Said defensive coordinator John Marshall: “Who’s Chris McAlister? Yeah I know who he is. I haven’t heard anything. He’s a great player.”

More to come . . .

ummmm does he have anything left in the tank?? and if this is true then routt should be cleaning his locker out right now should i be excited bout the secondary now??

  • raidertay

Hillarious. Al will simply drop him off at Cable’s office door.

  • LA to TheBay

    Rather have him than Routt.

McAllister would only come here to play safety. His corner days are most likely over, and we seem to have some improved play at safety right now.

I just have to say that some of you guys are simply idiots.

I truly can’t believe the comments I read about DHB some posts before this. Have you forgotten already why the guy was initially drafted? Cable explicitly said He makes everyone else better on the team and opens up the entire offense. Is that not what he is tasked to do? Is that not what he is doing?

He opens up things for Chaz, Miller and Murphy while providing a deep threat for the offense to either punish defenses for cheating or pulling them back to keep them honest. ONE man is making that much of a difference. This guy is being used to manipulate defenses.

All of you so called fans bching because the guy dropped one ball! Are you freakin’ kiddin’ me? Yes (1) BALL! Dude had 4 balls thrown his way all game and only had a chance at 2 of them – 1 of those 2 JR threw too high and hot for the short right side line only a few yards distance that he could barely get his hands up to catch – it went off his fingers.

Yet this guy is running patterns to free up Murphy & Miller. I distinctly remember him picking off 2-3 defenders allowing Murphy to run a route for the 1st down. Yet you lame brains will never give him credit. You think it was a coincidence that ZMiller was getting WIDE OPEN in the middle or with only 1 guy trying to cover him? Chaz explicitly said the defense was so worried about DHB they left him alone one-on-one.

If you don’t like why he was drafted then go back and play Madden or something. Don’t follow this team. Listening to all this hate from a “fan” is sickening. Like you all know soo much better than the coaches. There’s a reason you do what you do for a living and they do what they do for a living and chance are they know more than you.

  • Terrapin

And I’ll repost this this for you lame brains.

OMG, as soon as I post that NFLN shows a sky view of a JR to ZM deep middle throw …and guess what?

DHB was streaking down the sideline, he pulls the safety to him leaving a ENORMOUS VOID IN THE DEFENSE and ZMiller is WIDE OPEN …you could have parked a tractor trailer in that hole.

1st down Raiders. Go munch on that haters. Oopps sorry “fans”

  • BadMoodGuy

I doubt most of the trolls in here know anything more about the game of football than they get on ESPN. Watch some Sports Center and now they are experts.

This smacks of the Ben Troupe signing last season…those great Raider docs might pass mcalister at the physical…doesn’t mean he’ll ever see the field though.

  • Terrapin

But you know what …I don’t expect anyone to comment on FACTS ….just tow the blog line: DHB stinks.

What a bunch of idiots. I’m sorry, but you all are proving you don’t know jack the more you type.

  • raidertay

I think McAllister will be a Nickle/Back up Corner. Routt is garbage.

  • RaiderNation4Life1

i think murphy, miller, mcfadden, bush and maybe DHB is going to have a field day against the chiefs i think dhb will get some catches sunday and i think oakland will take the win because ellis and seymour will blow through the cheifs offense

Routt still has a great 40 time, …so he stays.

    Terp,

You don’t believe that if DHB does nothing but run down the sidelines and rarely, if ever catches a ball that it makes him worthy of the money he makes or his draft position do you?

Last time I checked, decoys don’t make $23 million dollars.

Face it, he’ll have to start catching some balls to even be considered an average WR…

Hopefully that starts in KC this weekend…

  • Norco Bob

Heres something for all you regulars in here,..if Oakland wins sunday,..wont see me here for a week,…in other words, see ya sunday night…but Im a man of my words, will honor my bet.

  • Norco Bob

I dont see why ya all so down on Routt…seems ok to me.

  • RaiderNation4Life1

    mcallister in routt out

Routt is garbage…I hope he gets the axe.

  • Norco Bob

Al Davis would never cut a 4.2,..never.

  • Norco Bob

Please dont compare woodson to mccallister.

  • raidertay

ZM made the same exact plays last year. I guess Ashley Lelie had the safety shakin in their boots.

  • RaiderNation4Life1

dhb will do ALOT better this game agaisnt the cheifs and mcbush is going to have a field day in the first half and let fargas finish it in the 4th and murphy will get atleast 3tds and miller will give us good yards and russel will move the ball down field because the chiefs d is questionable and i cant wait til our d plays because if they play like they played monday then i will say that seymour will have 4 sacks and ellis will have 2 and for the record cassel was good because he had moss to throw 2

    6 (for now)

Good post, well said. I think the guy could catch some balls, but well said.

I think he’s not happy in that role and would prefer to catch the ball, but if it makes the team better, I’m down with it.

His work didn’t show on the stat sheet. This will work for now, but he can’t be a decoy his whole career.

What the greats do is get double teamed and still make great catches, or burn DBs an make space for themselves. Seemed to me he was getting jammed pretty good at the LOS a few times.

  • Terrapin

Dakota, there are just so many holes in what you said I don’t know where to start.

If a decoy makes the ENTIRE OFFENSE FUNCTION then YES he is worth the money. If he is pulling the defense in his direction (allowing the coaches to manipulate the defenses) and opening up everybody else then YES he is worth the money. Is not the goal of the game to move the ball?

We had a famous decoy in Oakland: Randy Moss! Sure he was a threat here but he was also a decoy.

And again, ask yourself how many balls thrown his way he actually had a legit chance to catch? Please research this and get back to me.

FACTS: Randy Moss and T.O. dropped EASY catches this weekend and I mean EASY! (Wes Welker too).

  • LA to TheBay

Bob, Buchannon and Washington (especially) had great 40 times. Sometimes you gotta cut ties. Even Al will give a 4.2 guy the axe.

Lucky for them, they became system fits where they ended up.

  • raidertay

I was willing to be patient with DHB but his “I dont care about the fans, they dont write my check” comment rubbed me the wrong way.

I dont care about him dropping a pass. His team lost and he is like oh well I did my job. Thats just the wrong attitude.

Plz, Moss is a threat because he can take you deep. DHB hasnt proven that he can do that yet.

  • http://www.car.org KoolKell

Decoy is a position? Never heard of it.

Rod Woodson type move? What was the guy’s injury anyhow? Knees?

To be fair, Wes and Randy also caught 12 balls each.

    Terp,

So now DHB make our entire offense function?

    Are you insane?

  • Terrapin

Raidertay – Did you see the sky cam? NO! By your comment that sht is obvious. I know what I saw. You are just talking out of your azs and towing the blog line.

FACT: DHB is running by the corner, ZMiller is running on DHB’s side of the field, the safety just couldn’t risk it and followed DHB leaving a huge gap between him and Miller. ZMiller wide the fux open! Nobody within 10yds of him. JR passes deep to Miller for a 1st down. Thats what I saw and thats a FACT!

  • Raider Headbutt

Miller was my fav player during that game. I think it looks like JR is finding a reliable target, that is a step in the right direction.

  • http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/63/60563-004-52A399D4.jpg Dakota

Yes, Moss was a decoy…a decoy who also made plays. DHB couldn’t wear Moss’ jock for god’s sake.

Why don’t we wait until he first catches a ball, or scores a TD before we start comparing his game to Randy Moss’ game, and sure fire HOF WR.

  • Raider Dell

    Terp

You have largely pinpointed DHB function right now and have told anybody who disagrees with you is “simply a idiot fan”.

You’re not going to win many comments your way with that attitude.

I had commented a few months back on this blog, that DHB primary role will be to keep the safety on his side of the field, or over the top. The seam or middle will be open for Miller, Murphy, Schillens.

I gave the example of Cliff Branch, who was very similar to DHB, fantastic speed, bad hands, and his route running needed work.

Cliff Branch through hard work , with help from Freddie B developed his game over three years, to be a great route runner, have more than capable hands and became a fixture in the Raiders Offense.

When I hear pundits or even fans say the Raiders go “VERTICLE” what that really means is the routes in the passing game get extended and the windows in those routes get wider.

Cliff Branch became a bona fide weapon with hard work.

I hope DHB can be similar to Branch, he has a lot of work to do. I can say prior to the game Monday night the young man was playing catch for a long time before the game. This work ethic will serve him well.

Right now he is a decoy, untill he proves otherwise, if he doesn’t catch the balls thrown to him, the windows will get smaller in the passing game and that safety will ignore his speed.

Crazy how that only worked a couple of times…with the great DHB on the field Miller should be wide open all the time and our offense should have scored more than 20 points!

  • LA to TheBay

You know something I noticed, and it may be nothing, but Louis Murphy didn’t look like he kept either of the two balls he caught in the endzone.

I said he probably kept the first ’cause that was his real first TD in the league, but he didn’t keep it or the second one either.

Now maybe the equipment guy did so, but most every case a rookie, or anyone, scores their first TD, they keep it. Sanchez certainly did.

What I’m getting at, and I’m sure you guys are already aware, Murphy came to play. I am extremely impressed with this kid. He looks very polished and not at all intimidated by the big boys or the big stage.

I understand DHB’s current role (and frankly, think he’ll expand it), but Murphy is going to mean a lot to the team. Brash, unafraid, gutsy.

I certainly like what I’ve seen from him so far. He’s not concerned with sentimental stuff, he’s out to play hard.

DHB has played one game. How do you know he can’t make plays? San Diego sure thought he could make plays, so they doubled him because they didn’t want to find out. Eventually, teams are going to get tired of getting beat by the underneath WR and the TE and stop doubling DHB, then DHB will have to prove he can make a big play. Here’s hoping it’s this weekend.

    A 23 million dollar decoy????

    DHB isa BUST!! IMO~~

  • GalacticGus

I think in close games, no team including San Diego last Monday, does not want to find out and take chances. All you really need is one big play to change the tide of the game and San Diego would rather allow us to March down the field and take their chances there as the clock winds. It seems to have paid off. One INT and a fumble to offset their own turnovers
