Gallery has broken left fibula

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, September 20th, 2009 at 2:11 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders’ win in Kansas City came at a heavy cost.

Steve Corkran reports from Arrowhead Stadium that Robert Gallery said he has a broken left fibula. No word as yet if it’s a shorter-term break such as the one sustained by Khalif Barnes or something that could cost him the season.

More to come later . . .

Come on Dmac..how can you say “Past Raider teams wouldn’t have come through”?
This was a really bad KC team who played to their level. You actually think the Raiders stepped it up? That they looked good?
KC gave up two picks, dropped two easy picks, and left 3 pts on the field because the receiver didn’t comprehend “toss ball out of bounds if tackled in bounds” at the half.
    Raiders won be 3.

Ok, let’s put it another way.
Do you think the Raiders improved from last week?
    Look better, or look worse?

THE RAIDERS MANAGED TO MAKE THE KC CHIEFS, WHO HAVE LOST 24 OF THEIR LAST 26, COME ACROSS AS SOMEWHAT DECENT..and they aren’t.
Two bad throws from their qb, who hasn’t practiced all week, and two easy picks their D dropped..and you state “no matter”?

    —————————-

Richochet you do have to take into account the fact that this was a rivalry game where teams are very familiar with eachother, thats why you see teams such as the pats losing to the jets, and houston beating tennese. Last week the raiders looked better and everyone was singing a different tune. You also have to look at the fact that we were on the road. Pats raider teams would have never came through in a game like this. So im optimistic and believe we’ll play better next game. Once jamarcus find himself this team is going places.

  44. 860Todd Christensen Says:

Our O took a dive today, nuff said!

  45. 860Todd Christensen Says:

Vegas, this team folded early, they were not out classed, We gave Cassal too much time, we did not protect our QB, it wouldn’t of mattered who it was, rushed passes often miss the mark, what impressed me was how they came back from this for the final drive. I think there is hope, they are starting to think like a TEAM, this is hopeful!

  46. vegas raider Says:

The whole 2nd half, it was 2 runs and a failed pass on 3rd down. The one time they use play-action, it is 3rd and 5, and apparently they don’t know that play-action doesn’t work on 3rd and 5.

Why wouldn’t they just keep running it all 3 plays? They just kept throwing Jamarcus out there on 3rd and 7’s, paying no attention to what had been going on all game.

But hey, he has two last possession TD drives under his belt, in two games.

  47. priesttj Says:

Russell gets a reprieve basedon the demonstration tht he can get it done when it counts. Two weeks in a row late game come from behind drives to take the lead. It shows he has the ability what’s lacking is any degree consistency as I mentioned last night. He probably wont show that until maybe midseason.

Russell has to come out against the Broncos and show some improvement. I think he will redeem himself he got this stinker out of the way. Hopefully.

  48. vegas raider Says:

The worst passes of the day (there were plenty)

1- The Murphy potential TD, only he lobbed the ball too far and over the wrong shoulder, when the inside was wide open.

2- The bad screen to D-mac in the 1st quarter. Would have been 10 yards easy.

3- The Miller overthrow. Wide open and it was 5 feet over his head.

  49. lefty12 Says:

Bush should be starting, not McFadden. One touch and McFadden goes down.

McFadden is also being used wrong. The are running him up the middle instead of to the outside which is his strength. Run Bush up the middle.

Gradowski is better than Russell. If Rich Ganon had been our quarterback today, the final score would have been 30-10.

  62. Kush Says:

Last week the cliche of the week was that ‘good teams find a way to win and bad teams find a way to lose.’

That was the excuse that everyone gave the Chargers horrible performance last week.

Well this week the Raiders answered back and found a way to win. Does that make us a good team or is Kansas City just that bad?

I think the answer is that the Raiders are a MUCH IMPROVED team this year. The bottom line is Jamarcus Russell.

The play of our QB will literally determine our season.

If Jamarcus can even marginally improve in his touch and accuracy, we will win the division.

  70. Kirk Says:

Russell is not going to cut it.

$32 million dollars down the drain.

  71. Chris in NY Says:

Was JaMarcus terrible until that last drive? Absolutely.

But he did engineer that last drive to put us ahead just like in the first game against San Diego.

A win is a win. I think JaMarcus’ biggest problem right now may just be confidence. Hopefully this win and the final drive give him some confidence to start slinging it like I know he can in the games ahead.

And the 28-yard throw to Watkins is one few QBs can make. A deep crossing pattern with two defenders in the area and JaMarcus sizzles it in there on 3rd and 15 so fast that only Watkins can make the catch before the defenders can make a play. That talent is why he was the No. 1 pick in the draft.

  72. THREE RING CIRCUS Says:

    HUFF IS A BALL HAWK

  73. Silver-n-Black666 Says:

    The guy is slow.

Now I have been one of the biggest Russell Kool-Aid drinker over the past 2 years so don’t say I am a hater.

But this is unacceptable when guys like Flaco and Sanchez are having the kind of success they are so fast. It shows that there are guys that can come out of college and play Qb (Matt Ryan) and not have to wait three or four years to develop.

Russell is not a hard worker. If he had a Rich Gannon work ethic he would rule this league!

  74. lefty12 Says:

i do find it encouraging that we have a def. that will allow us to be in games until, hopefully, our off.(QB) comes around.as i stated the last couple of days, even though we allowed SD to score in the 4th qtr.,our def. kept us in the game even though our QB was having a bad game.it is also entirely possible the def. will just keep getting better and better.

  75. Chris in NY Says:

    ———————-

    I hear you SNB,
But Flacco’s numbers from last year were nearly identical to Russell’s. And Sanchez hasn’t been asked to do a whole lot yet either.

JaMarcus looked absolutely dreadful for 95% of this game, but I like the fact that he stepped up and made plays at the end of the game, just like he did vs. San Diego. If he can harness that mindset that he goes into when the Raiders are down and their back is up against the wall, he may develop into a star QB yet.

Look at what happened with Nnamdi. Took him 3 years to develop. Look at what may be happening with Huff. QB is a much tougher position to learn. He obviously can’t play like he did for most of this game in the future and hope to keep his job, but I think we’ll all just have to be patient and see what happens.

The wins have been rare in Raiderland the last 6 years so I think everyone should quit groaning about this game and just be thankful that we stole one for once while the other team gave it away.

  90. vegas raider Says:

You kind of get the feeling the Raiders are going to play a lot of nail-biters this year.

Next week will probably be another close game, decided in the last few minutes.

  91. JT52 Says:

Jamarcus sucked big time this game but Russell did come up big at the end of the game.

before the big play to Watkins he slung a tight ball into DHB which probably would have been a TD if not for the falst start call.

The man was the comeback king in college. As long as our Defense can keep us in the game I think we may have a decent shot at staying above .500

Russell has looked terrible I agree. I mean terrible! rookie 7th round picks can make the throws he is missing. But he got it done in the 4th quarter with the game on the line in his last 3 games.

Schilens will make a huge impact on the passing game when he returns. Hopefully he can go against the Donkeys next week.

Gosh one more terrible home game with that in-field.

Facts are Raiders have won 3 of their last 4 reg. season NFL games, and if not for the usual NFL screw jobs last week, would be on a 4 game winning streak. Yes, they won ugly today, but a W is a W.

Raider teams of the 70’s and 80’s won a lot of ‘ugly” games as well.

  93. vegas raider Says:

BTW, was that DHB blocking on the outside on D-Mac’s TD run? I think it was (who ever it was did a great job), and I caught him doing a really good job blocking a few other times.

So hey, he is a good decoy and an above-average blocker. At least he has some of the little things down, now just work on what he really gets paid to do.

The way the Raiders played gives a whole new dimension to the term “inept”.

Hey, be thankful you played a team that handed it to you.
    What was Russell’s stats again?

Gore is not facing 8 man fronts. Look at both games the Raiders have played so far and both defense’s stacked the box. with a minimum of 8. Havent seen a RB in the league that can run for positive yardage against that.

  145. priesttj Says:

Every player is different, saying why can’t Russell have the same as another playerto me makes very little sense unless you have th same set of circumstances an so on. I wish he had the same success as Marino, but that is not going to happen. Russell is Russell……..period either he will succeed or he wont.

Flacco’s life experiences and and such are much different than Russell’s. Russell will just take longer to develope that’s all. hy is’t DMC haing the sam success as say AP or CJ in Tenn? Why play that sillly game?

We all know that Russell isn’t playing well for whtevr reason and only he and the coaches know fr sure. I’m sure the coaches are frustrated I know I would be. He has to be more consistent. Do the simple things more consistently well. But he has to go at his own pace. If that is too slow for the Raiders, we’ll know soon enough. Every player is different.

Why couldn’t Huff do what he’s doing now sooner? We all know he had the ability it just didn’t happen now he looks like he’s one of the top safeties in the game all of a sudden. One month ago most in here wanted to cut him. Would you cut him now?

Russell IMO is stuggling with his decision making more than anything because he lacks confidence the same as Huff. Now Huff is just playing and not thinking he’s reacting to what he sees.

Now when Russell just runs the offense and stops playing with so much caution he’ll let it rip as he did in the final drive. That shows me he definitely has what it takes he just needs play with that same confidence throughout the game.

People keep saying it’s accuracy, I disagree you can’t bethat inaccurate and then all of a sudden become accurate in the final drive. It tells me he lacks confidence in himself and the players around him.

That is my point!! he was outstanding on that final drive. WHY?? because he knew the game was on the line and he had no choice but to trust them and step up himself. He did the same thing Monday night, when head to be great he was. So why does that happen?

In his last three starts he came from behind in the 4th qrtr to put his team on top. That is a fact! So if he’s capable of doing it in crunch time, why not during the course of the game.

Based on th way he was playing in this game we should’ve lost GAURANTEED, but when he had to be great he was…………period

Matt Schaub to Jacoby Jones, the ball comes lose EXACTLY the way MURPHY’S PASS DID LAST WEEK!!!

The play is called a TD with NO REVIEW from the official. Even the announcers comment that what happened to the rule that went against the Raiders???

Bottom line…we should be 2-0 right now. I’m proud of our defense and I’m proud of Louis Murphy. Anytime the Raiders win despite playing against the other team and the refs every single week, I’m doubly proud of our team.

Losing Gallery is going to really hurt our running game. Satelle is not that good as a backup. McQuistan is no bargain either.Maybe we need to try Barnes, assuming he’s ready, at LG temporarily. We still need to fix Green at RT but maybe we leave him there and get JR knocked of the game for awhile and get a real QB in there.

JR is playing terrible. Maybe we afe seeing the real JR. I hope not. But, in any event, Cable needs to put him on a very short leash and not be afraid to yank his sorry ass if he come up with another non-performance like today. This team has to be bigger than that BIG DUMMY.

Since Gallery was a bust at one position and then did well as a LG lets take another really high draft pick and put him at LG. I am thinking Jam Rus. He threw a great block last week and seems better at doing that than passing the ball. He is also built for it. What do you guys think???

Won’t work. He couldn’t get to the second level for blocking because he goes down after his second step. His magic feet aren’t! Witness today’s JR self-sacking himself.

    That won’t work.
LG’s have to get up off of 3 point stance…I don’t think JRuss can do that.
As well, guards have to be able to pull with some sort of speed, and agility, on occasion.
The only thing Russell seems to be able to pull is his shirt over his gut…

    Wait..let me check.

It’s somehow frustrating watching good teams play. We see how it is and then we have to watch players like JR. How did AD let things get this bad for this long?
    ======================
When you’re Al’s age, everyday is Groundhog Day.

As we speak, he’s rehearsing his introduction speech:
“New head coach of the Oakland Raiders..Lance Kiffin”

    And so it goes…

  256. 1960AutumnWind Says:

    JB

I think Al really missed it when he picked Calahan as HC (players influence). If the players make you the head coach they can make you the ex HC. He then lost a lot of credibility when he hired Art Shell and had that retro year. I actually think we are still recovering from 2006. At least we got rid of RR and actually can defend the run now. I think the Browns gave up almost 200 yards rushing this week after over 250 yards the week before. Now we have to either hope JR develops or get a QB next off season and I think the Raiders will return to respectability.

Just remember when we drafted JR BSPN and all the “experts” said this was the right pick. They also said that of Gallery “can’t miss generational LT” but said when we pick Asoughma that Al was off his rocker and “had lost it.” Maybe this portends well for HBey…

Assuming JR remains at his current proficiency level, I wonder how long it will take AD to pull the trigger on JR? AD doesn’t have all that many sunsets left and he definitely want another SB win before he checks out? I don’t think Cable has the stones to bench JR so it will take an AD intervention. Maybe AD will resign Andrew Walter, an AD favorite, or give one of our 2 back-ups a chance. Personally, I think either back-up could currently outplay JR.

  265. JB Says:

JR is not our only problem. I’m not totally sure about DMac. He seems to go down very easily. On the couple of breakaway runs that he’s had, he’s been caught from behind. He also seems to have JR feet every now & then. Maybe he should just play at the WR position. He could be very dangerous there assuming we had someone throwing the ball who could get it to him. He’s most dangerous when in the open. Not all that great, so far, when in & around the Big Uglies.

  266. Plunketthead Says:

    Lefty thats called sarcasm

  267. 1960AutumnWind Says:

Right now with that running game I would give Fry the ball or even Gradosowki. I mean they (other teams) are putting 8-9 in the box daring us to throw. Either one of them would make them pay and play a more honest defense. I would hazard even old shellshocked Walter would outplay JR right now.

Also, Russel’s first pass of the game reaffirmed my thoughts about him. I, without hyperbole, could have made that pass in Jr High, and I don’t even play football. Dmac was 10 ft away with nobody in between and he threw it straight into the ground. I can count count on one hand the number of times I have sen that in the NFL and every time I laughed about what a joke that QB was. We should start shopping for backup QBs, or give Gradkoski the second half at least.

  270. Richochet Says:

I just can’t see Al benching Russell.
    Don’t see it.

Part of Al’s big to-do with Kiffin was how Kiffin didn’t want Russell all along (way to embarrass Russell by bringing up that insignificant/changes nothing point, Al..you da geezer *thumbsup*) and how Al was always behind Russell.
Benching Russell would give Kiffin the last laugh, while Al has to explain away another bad draft choice.

Hmmm..as I recall the other point of contention with Al/KiffinGate fiasco was Kiffin fired Ryan, which Al promptly over-ruled.

It appears that Kiffin was right on both accounts, doesn’t it?

  271. PassTheCheetos Says:

your wrong about gallery switching from left tackle to right tackle to guard. He was drafted as a LT who started off his career at RT, who then switched to LT. Decent RT but had way to many penalties. Had one year as a left tackle with art shell as the left tackle and was horrible.

  272. raiderkoolaid Says:

I do think Gradkowski is a serviceable QB, as is Fry. Either one could win games with a good team around them. Russel has the upside that he has the freakish arm strength and size to see over the defense and not go down to easily. He played much better the last three games last year so I do believe he is capable of playing better. I hope the confidence he should have gained from that last drive will be the start of a turn around. This division is wide open and next weeks game against the Donkeys will go a long ways toward keeping it that way, so Russel and The Raiders need to be much better at home next week. It is still early, but a win next week means a tie for first place in the AFC worst.

  273. Plunketthead Says:

Grad/fry would dink and dunk and the other teams D would stack the line anyway. Few men can throw the ball like JR. Just gonna have to give him time or maybe you guys can start another keep kiffinfire al boycott.
We should be giving Cable tips to improve JR instead of bashing himn all the time.
Things like throwing the ball through a swinging tire like the good days in 70/80 ball. Whats gonna happen is JR is gonna sling the ball all over the field and WR with world class speed are gonna learn to run and leap and catch the ball at the apex just like the good days of 70/80 ball.
I would be concerned about darren tippytoes McFadden then JR. JR will be fine in Als run at the superbowl.

  274. 24 Says:

As much as I am frustrated with Russell, he has somehow, someway put together game winning drives and the Defense failed in week 1 but stopped KC in week 2. As unimpressive as Russell was all game, he put it together magically when it mattered the most. As much as I’d like to see the consistency throughout the game, its a promising thing to see him march down the field under pressure so you know he has “IT”. The idea is to get him to do that all game long but its there, he just needs to bring it out more often.

Its easy to point the finger at JR and theres good reason for it but his growth is a little stunted with 2 rookies starting at the wideout position and also with the injuries to Schilens and JLH and without Walker being who he should be. I would continue to give the ball to JR because one of these days hopefully, hes just going to do these things consistently and when he does…watch out.

Didn’t seem that way today. He had 1 sack of himself, 2 short unobstructed 10′ passes that were missed badly, 2-3 swing passes that were batted down by linemen and he goes down easier than DMac does. A swift breeze seems to knock him off his pins. What upside? Right now he’s just a big anchor around this teams neck. The team would be better served with him on the bench.

I agree with Lefty. Quite making excuses for JR. It’s not about the WR’s. They are wide open and he still misses them big time. Sometimes a turd is just a turd. It may think it’s something different but it’s just a turd no matter what color you paint it.

  284. priesttj Says:

Lefty12, if he doesn’t get better you’re right but if he does get better then what?

There are no excuses for wht Russell is not doing which is playing competent football. The WR’s are young but he has to at least give the a chance to fail. I’ve seen what I think is the reason for this but it doesn’t excuse it. Just throw it on time and accurately and let them either fail or succeed.

Those 3 and outs put too much pressure on the entire team. You can tell he knows where to go wth the football so he’s making his reads. Now make the damn throws and we’ll have an effective offense. He’s putting a ton of pressure on himself and the team.

  285. dave r Says:

the wrs r young but they r getting open this lies squarely on jruss giving up 409 yards total offense also lies on jruss time of possesion kills defenses 38 minutes on the field will kill any d were lucky there resilent hats off to them im hoping getting chaz back improves russells performance him and justin r his favorite targets if it dont improve put his ass on the bench

  289. raiderkoolaid Says:

Russel was very accurate the last three games last year and also in the second Denver game, so he is capable of throwing much better than he did the last two weeks. I don’t know why his throws have been so far off the last two weeks, but I hope that the last drive will give him the confidence to turn it on and be more like he was at the end of last year, and then improve from there.

  290. toec Says:
